DFIG-generaattoriratkaisu on tällä hetkellä ylivoimaisesti suosituin tuulivoimaloiden generaattoriratkaisu, joten suuren suosion selvittämiseksi tehtiin teknis-taloudellista vertailua pääosin PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) -tyyppiseen eli kestomagneettitahtigeneraattorilla varustettuun tuulivoimalaan, joka on DFIG-tuulivoimalan lisäksi nykypäivänä suosittu tuulivoimalan generaattoriratkaisu.
The objective of the thesis was to study a variety of wind turbine solutions and in particular those used in generator solutions. The main objective was to find out technically the operation of the wind turbine, which is equipped with a double fed induction generator and report the most essential issues in connection with. A double fed induction generator is nowadays by far the most popular generator solution in wind turbines, so in addition to determine the reasons for high popularity, technical and economic comparison mostly to a permanent magnet synchronous generator was made. A permanent magnet synchronous generator is in also nowadays a popular wind turbine generator solution with a double fed induction generator. The main sources in information retrieval were books, articles and scientific reports. These sources were mainly in English language, due to the lack of domestic sources.
The commonly preoccupying technical operation of the double fed induction generator wind turbine was solved such as the meaning of partial rated converter and also how power and frequency behaves in the generator system. The purpose was to report the clarified…

▼ This thesis begins with providing a basic introduction of electricity requirements for small developing
country communities serviced by small scale generating units (focussing mainly on small
wind turbine, small Photo Voltaic system and Micro-Hydro Power Plants). Scenarios of these
small scale units around the world are presented. Companies manufacturing different size wind
turbines are surveyed in order to propose a design that suits the most abundantly available and
affordable turbines.
Different Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms normally employed for these
small scale generating units are listed along with their working principles. Most of these algorithms
for MPPT do not require any mechanical sensors in order to sense the control parameters
like wind speed and rotor speed (for small wind turbines), temperature and irradiation (for PV
systems), and water flow and water head (for Micro-Hydro). Models for all three of these
systems were developed in order to generate Maximum Power Point (MPP) curves. Similarly,
a model for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs) has been developed in the
d-q reference frame. A boost rectifier which enables active Power Factor Correction (PFC) and
has a DC regulated output voltage is proposed before implementing a MPPT algorithm. The
proposed boost rectifier works on the principle of Direct Power Control Space Vector Modulation
(DPC-SVM) which is based on instantaneous active and reactive power control loops. In this
technique, the switching states are determined according to the errors between commanded and
estimated values of active and reactive powers.
The PMSG and Wind Turbine behaviour are simulated at various wind speeds. Similarly, simulation
of the proposed PFC boost rectifier is performed in matlab/simulink. The output of these
models are observed for the variable wind speeds which identifies PFC and boosted constant DC
output voltage is obtained. A buck converter that employs the MPPT algorithm is proposed
and modeled. The model of a complete system that consists of a variable speed small wind
turbine, PMSG, DPC-SVM boost rectifier, and buck converter implementing MPPT algorithm
is developed. The proposed MPPT algorithm is based upon the principle of adjusting the duty
ratio of the buck converter in order reach the MPP for different wind speeds (for small wind turbines) and different water flow rates (Micro-Hydro).
Finally, a prototype DPC-SVM boost rectifier and buck converter was designed and built for a
turbine with an output power ranging from 50 W-1 kW. Inductors for the boost rectifier and
buck DC-DC converter were designed and built for these output power ranges. A microcontroller
was programmed in order to generate three switching signals for the PFC boost rectifier and one
switching signal for the MPPT buck converter. Three phase voltages and currents were sensed
to determine active and reactive power. The voltage vectors were divided into 12 sectors and a
switching algorithm based on the DPC-SVM boost…

▼ A series of field tests and theoretical analyses were performed on various wind turbine rotor designs at two Penn State residential-scale wind-electric facilities. This work involved the prediction and experimental measurement of the electrical and aerodynamic performance of three wind turbines; a 3 kW rated Whisper 175, 2.4 kW rated Skystream 3.7, and the Penn State designed Carolus wind turbine. Both the Skystream and Whisper 175 wind turbines are OEM blades which were originally installed at the facilities. The Carolus rotor is a carbon-fiber composite 2-bladed machine, designed and assembled at Penn State, with the intent of replacing the Whisper 175 rotor at the off-grid system. Rotor aerodynamic performance is modeled using WT\_Perf, a National Renewable Energy Laboratory developed Blade Element Momentum theory based performance prediction code. Steady-state power curves are predicted by coupling experimentally determined electrical characteristics with the aerodynamic performance of the rotor simulated with WT
Perf. A dynamometer test stand is used to establish the electro-mechanical efficiencies of the wind-electric system generator. Through the coupling of WT
Perf and dynamometer test results, an aero-electro-mechanical analysis procedure is developed and provides accurate predictions of wind system performance. The analysis of three different wind turbines gives a comprehensive assessment of the capability of the field test facilities and the accuracy of aero-electro-mechanical analysis procedures. Results from this study show that the Carolus and Whisper 175 rotors are running at higher tip-speed ratios than are optimum for power production. The aero-electro-mechanical analysis predicted the high operating tip-speed ratios of the rotors and was accurate at predicting output power for the systems. It is shown that the wind turbines operate at high tip-speeds because of a miss-match between the aerodynamic drive torque and the operating torque of the wind-system generator. Through the change of load impedance on the wind generator, the research facility has the ability to modify the rotational speed of the wind turbines, allowing the rotors to perform closer to their optimum tip-speed. Comparisons between field test data and performance predictions show that the aero-electro-mechanical analysis was able to predict differences in power production and rotational speed which result from changes in the system load impedance.

The goal of this dissertation was the analysis, implementation and control of an AC-DC-AC power converter built with a DC/DC step-up converter and a single phase inverter for grid-tied wind turbines based on permanent magnet synchronous generator.
The overall control of the converter AC-DC-AC followed a strategy in which the control of the step-up converter and the single phase inverter was implemented independently. The first is used to maximize the power available in the wind turbine through the implementation of an algorithm for the maximum power point tracking (MPPT), while the second is used to capture all the energy provided by the first and send it to the grid with unit power factor. This is achieved with current control of the inverter in order to ensure that the current generated by the inverter is in phase with the mains voltage.
The development of the monitoring program was carried out with the software Simulink. The PI controllers were designed, implemented, tested and validated step-by-step to minimize the number of parameters to adjust the same time.
A graphical interface was developed using the software ControlDesk to allow suitable…

The objective of this thesis is to study the dimensioning and simulation of a AC-DC-AC converter control, composed by a DC-DC step-up and a single phase voltage inverter for grid connection of wind turbines with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG).
The control strategy of the converter AC-DC-AC is to control independently a step-up converter and an inverter. The first aims at maximization of power extracted from the tur-bine, through the implementation of a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, while the second aims to extract all the energy from the first supplying it to the grid with unity power factor.
The control of the voltage source inverter is based on current control techniques to ensure a sinusoidal waveform in the output current, synchronous with the grid. It was also used a voltage control to ensure a certain DC (Direct Current) voltage value at the input of invert-er to allow the inverter has an output voltage higher than the grid voltage. Applying a filter to the output of the inverter has also been an addressed topic. It is used to reduce the current harmonic content that is injected into the grid.
The control of the step-up is done is based on speed and current control to extract the max-imum energy from the generator and deliver it to the inverter.

▼ When using an intermittent source of energy such as wind power together with a synchronous machine a frequency converter system is needed to decouple the generator from the grid, due to the fluctuations in wind speed resulting in fluctuating electrical frequency. The aim of this master's thesis is to investigate how different types of rectification methods affect permanent magnet synchronous machines of different saliency ratios. A literature study was carried out to review the research within the area and to acquire the necessary knowledge to carry out the work. Two simulation models were created that include a permanent magnet synchronous generator driven by a wind turbine and connected to the grid via a frequency converter, where one model utilizes active rectification and one utilizes passive rectification. The simulation models were verified by carrying out an experiment on a similar setup, which showed that the simulation results coincide well with the results of the experiment. The results of the simulation study were then used to compare the rectification systems as well as investigate the affect that rotor saliency has on the system. It was shown that the active rectification provided a higher efficiency than the passive rectification system, however the saliency of the rotor had little effect on the system.

▼ Direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generators (
PMSG) in wind turbine applications are becoming increasingly popular due to their reliability compared to medium speed generators with a gearbox. A proposed generator-drive scheme with reduced active switching provides a way to reduce the power electronics cost significantly. This requires the per unit reactance (Xpu) of the generator to be low compared to conventional generators. Three
PMSG topologies were designed, optimized and analyzed for their performance for this 10 MW direct drive generator-drive system. Optimization of these generator topologies for their efficiency and weight was performed. Comparisons between them for the efficiency, weight, Xpu, and cost are presented. Once the design is selected, integration of generator-drive system, challenges and results are also discussed and presented.

▼ The penetration of renewable energy technologies (RES), electrical vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS) into power systems is growing very significantly, aiming at obtaining CO2 free, ‘green’ energy. With the advent of modern, high-power solid-state semiconductor valves and bridges, the various power sectors (namely, generation, transmission and distribution) are undergoing rapid transformation, shifting towards hybrid AC-DC power grids. It is expected that such a transformation will enable higher grid stability, flexibility, voltage level independency and much improved power quality. To realise this, the use of voltage source converters-based HVDC (VSC-HVDC) links, particularly those geared towards the harnessing of the renewable energy resource, are receiving much attention.
The thesis focuses on power flow modelling and analysis where permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG) wind turbines are connected to a representative 5-node power system, using VSC-HVDC links. Several types of HVDC links are considered and the two-level VSC-HVDC link model is realized mathematically, in such a way that it is suitable for incorporation into a power flow formulation. Also, different types of wind turbines are studied, and mathematical models are developed to confirm some of the advantages offered by VSC-HVDC equipment to connect wind turbines into the power system. The Newton-Raphson power flow algorithm is adopted to perform the power flow calculations. MATLAB scripting is used to implement the developed mathematical models. Several test cases are studied using this MATLAB software.
The simulation results confirm that VSC-HVDC links do not only provide great flexibility in controlling active power flow but also in regulating voltage magnitude by either absorbing reactive power from the grid or by injecting reactive power into the grid.

▼ A cDNA library was synthesized from lamb pituitary poly(A)+ RNA for oligonucleotide screening and isolation of cDNA sequences encoding the ovine follicle-stimulating hormone β-subunit. Three cDNA clones were isolated and their nucleotide sequences established by dideoxy sequence analysis. The full length oFSH β-subunit cDNA sequence is 1889 base pairs in length and encodes a 129 amino acid prehormone. Comparison of the predicted amino acid sequence with that determined by amino acid sequence analysis has identified a conservative amino acid substitution Ala for Thr at position +49, a non-conservative substitution Arg for Ser at position +88, and a single C-terminal region amino acid exclusion at position +109. Comparison of the full length ovine follicle-stimulating hormone β-subunit cDNA sequence with the bovine follicle-stimulating hormone β-subunit shows an overall homology of 85% and a coding region homology of 95%.
A mammalian cell expression vector incorporating the SV40 enhancer, origin of replication, small t intron and polyadenylation sequences, and the heavy metal ion inducible human metallothionein IIA promoter, was constructed for the high level expression of the individual ovine follicle-stimulating hormone α- and β-subunits, and the assembly and secretion of ovine follicle-stimulating hormone heterodimers in in vitro cell culture. A variety of α- and β-subunit expression constructs incorporating full length or truncated wild-type cDNA sequences, or mutant β-subunit cDNA sequences, were transfected into the SV40 transformed African green monkey kidney cell line COS-1, and the Chinese hamster ovary cell line CHO-K1. Mammalian cell transfections were examined by Northern blot analysis and metabolic labelling of recombinant α- and β-subunit polypeptides. Expression levels for the recombinant heterodimer were monitored using a porcine testis plasma membrane radioreceptor assay. This assay is specific for the heterodimeric form of follicle-stimulating hormone.
The results of the mammalian cell expression experiments demonstrated transcription and translation of the individual ovine follicle-stimulating hormone subunit cDNA sequences, and expression and secretion of an ovine follicle-stimulating hormone heterodimer having receptor binding activity in the porcine testis radioreceptor assay. Truncation of the β-subunit cDNA 3' non-coding region sequence resulted in increased levels of β-subunit mRNA and increased heterodimer expression. CHO cell co-transfections incorporating the wild-type a-subunit and the ovine growth hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone β-subunit hybrid cDNA expression constructs, showed the highest levels of expression at approximately 155 ng/106 cells/day.
Recombinant α- and β-subunit polypeptides were isolated from stably transfected high producing CHO cell lines for N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis and comparison with pituitary-derived…

▼ Rising public awareness for environmental protection and continuously increasing energy consumption, coupled with the shortage of power generation and steady progress in power deregulation and utility restructuring, have created increased interest in renewable energy sources (RESs). Hydroelectric, photovoltaic (PV), and wind have got the most interest. Renewable energies have been growing with a high rate comparable to the fossil energies growing rate such as coal. Advances in solar and wind technology combined with escalating environmental regulations lead a high demand of distributed generation (DG) resources around the globe. A typical power system in countries such as United States has large-scale central power stations located in remote areas, which are connected to transmission system. Recent tendency is, however, toward developing small-scale distributed generating units; thus power generating units will be located near the consumers and large generating units will be replaced by a number of smaller generating units. The prospect of reduced cost, increased reliability, increased energy efficiency, improved power quality, and energy independence are the main motivation for customers to increase their interests to what is called “smart grid”. Renewable energy sources including photovoltaic and wind turbines and fuel cells are categorized as main energy sources of DG in future smart grids with promising sustainability. Among them, wind energy has appeared as the fastest growing energy all over the world. However, the power generated by wind turbine systems is highly dependent on weather conditions. Also it is not easy to store the wind power generation to use in future. To mitigate these issues, wind power sources need to be augmented with some other generation/storage system. Hence the perfect control is essential to keep the DG system operating properly within the power grids. Usually the DG systems are integrated using power electronics interface to enhance the system security. Consequently it is important to design the hybrid energy systems and their control strategies in a way to stabilize the system under any disruptions from the load side, as well as from the renewable energy source.

▼ Wind power as a green and low-carbon renewable energy could effectively mitigate the energy crisis and reduce environmental pollution, including the rapid developing offshore wind power with its rich reserves, wind stability, high wind speed, less interference, noise and other advantages. The trend for development of offshore wind farms is towards a growing size of installed power. This together with higher distances from the shore leads in many cases to HVDC connection as a preferred choice for power export. Thus, the wind turbines are connected through a collection grid to an offshore platform. As the offshore wind farm contains a large number of power electronic devices and submarine cables, it will inevitably lead to the occurrence of harmonic resonance. Offshore wind farm harmonic and resonance will affect the power quality, while poses a huge challenge to the power grid and wind power. In this thesis work, a comprehensive harmonic analysis in offshore wind farm was studied. Firstly, a detail configuration of the wind energy conversion system and harmonic analysis basics are described and interpreted. Next, a suitable model of one offshore wind farm is built and validated in Matlab/Simulink. The equivalent circuit is calculated for the components in the aggregated wind farm based on their harmonic model. And potential resonance problems are analyzed by frequency scan method to calculate the resonance impedance and frequency. Afterwards, based on the self-built system model, potential harmonic issues that arise in the system are investigated in time domain to interpret the THD at PCC between the collection grid and the onshore grid. As well, a few effective strategy for suppressing harmonics are simulated to evaluate the various influence on the harmonic issue. Both the designed C-type filter and active power filter performed a satisfying results on harmonics suppression.

▼ The increasing global participation of wind power in the overall generation ca- pacity makes it one of the most promising renewable resources. Advances in power electronics have enabled this market growth and penetration. Through a literature review, this work explores the challenges and opportunities presented by offshore wind farms, as well as the different solutions proposed concerning power electron- ics converters, collection and transmission schemes, as well as control and protection techniques. A novel power converter solution for the parallel connection of high power offshore wind turbines, suitable for HVDC collection and transmission, is presented. For the parallel operation of energy sources in an HVDC grid, DC link voltage con- trol is required. The proposed system is based on a full-power rated uncontrolled diode bridge rectifier in series with a partially-rated fully-controlled thyristor bridge rectifier. The thyristor bridge acts as a voltage regulator to ensure the flow of the desired current through each branch, where a reactor is placed in series for filtering of the DC current. AC filters are installed on the machine side to mitigate harmonic content. The mathematical modeling of the system is derived and the control design procedure is discussed. Guidelines for equipment and device specifications are pre- sented. Different setups for an experimental framework are suggested and discussed, including a conceptual application for hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulation and testing.

This master thesis presents the development of a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) with Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) operating at variable speed. The energy processing circuit is divided into two stages. In the AC-DC stage, an unidirectional three-phase bridgeless boost topology absorbs the energy supplied by the generator and injects it into the DC link. In this converter, the self-control technique allows the current extraction with low THD and high power factor. Furthermore, a - Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) determines the rotational speed of the generator that will ensure the proper operating point. This mode of operation is maintained while the available power remains lower than the converter rated power. Otherwise, the MPPT algorithm is disabled and a mechanical power control loop ensures the rated power condition. On the DC-AC conversion stage, a three-phase full-bridge inverter, whose control is based on the theory of instantaneous power, provides energy to the grid complying with regulatory requirements. A complete theoretical analysis is presented as well as the simulation results considering the prototype with a rated power of 6 kW equivalent of wind turbine used. Satisfactory experimental results are shown to an output of 3 kW: the…

▼ The future global energy transition favour renewables such as wind power, which is predicted to be one of the predominant sources harvesting abundant amounts of energy onwards. Consequently, causing several conventional synchronous generators to be decommissioned in a near future to achieve an overall reduction in greenhouse gases related to electricity generation. However, this evolution comes with new challenges regarding power system stability that could jeopardize the reliability of the grid as we today know it. Therefore, this thesis will examine how high penetrations of wind power are impacting each fundamental criterion regarding power system stability. For this purpose, are two different scenarios being carried out in Siemens PSS/E, representing a futuristic case as well as a present one. The simulation results themselves are being compared with analogies drawn from previous studies conducted within the field to determine if it can be improved.

▼ During the course of this work, the expression of the heterodimeric hormone (alpha and beta subunits) Pregnant Mare Serum (
PMSG), also called equine Chorionic Gonadotropin (eCG), with each subunit under control of AOX1 promoter in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris, as well as the development of an upstream and downstream process was carried out.
First, the development of a cell-based bioassay as well as the cell culture techniques associated with the cell lines was reported. Sertoli cells (TM4) and granulose cells were rejected as a proper cell lines for the bioassay probably because of their poor stereidogenic activity. By contrast, Leydig cells (MLTC-1) resulted in a proper cell line to develop a feasible and reproducible in vitro bioassay to evaluate the hormone bioactivity.
Second, two expression vectors with Human Serum Albumin (HSA) fused to C-terminal and N-terminal of
PMSG beta subunit, were constructed and subsequently transformed in P. pastoris. Furthermore, both contained a single copy of the
PMSG alpha subunit expressed autonomosly. In both constructs, twelve O-glycosylation points located in the C-terminal peptide (CTP) of beta subunit were eliminated in order to reduce the immunogenic effect caused by the mannose-type glycosylation. With the aim to restore a probably reduction of the half-life caused by the CTP deletion, the HSA was genetically fused to beta subunit. Subsequent studies in shake flask revealed a specific cleavage around the linker zone in the construct with the HSA fused to the N-terminal of beta subunit, rejecting this construct as a candidate. On the other hand, construct with HSA fused in the C-terminal revealed also degradation of product, but still intact recombinant
PMSG (rPMSG) was recovered and its in vitro activity demonstrated.
Thrid, High-cell density cultivation in fed-batch was properly implemented at pH 5.5 and 30ºC. Besides, an adequate two-step purification process was carried out, but a low yield of the entire secreted rPMSG was recovered. Despite this inconvenience, the rPMSG was purified and positively assayed in vitro with MLTC-1 cells. In order to reduce the proteolysis several process approaches were implemented; best working pH to reduce the extracellular degradation of the rPMSG was found at pH 6.5, after 72 hours incubation of purified rPMSG at pH 6,5 almost 66% of the protein remained integral The pH 5.5 and pH 6,5 were compared in batch cultivations at 30ºC, and concluding that intracellularly at pH 6,5 the state of rPMSG improved significantly. Similarly, batch cultivations at 30ºC and 22ºC were performed and clarified that reduced temperature decreased substantially the protease effect intracellularly. Both parameters were applied in fed-batch cultivations with better yields of non-degraded rPMSG as showed in vitro analysis. Unfortunately, cell viability experiments by flow cytometry and cytosolic fraction analysis by western blot pointed out that degradation mainly occurred during the secretion pathway, thus disqualifying any process approach…

▼ In distributed energy systems, permanent magnet synchronous generators (
PMSG) are
often connected to the grid via power converters, such as voltage source converters
(VSC). The price of the converter constitutes a large part of the costs of a variablespeed
turbine (driven either by wind or ocean energy system) and is often required in
order to conform to stringent grid codes imposed by transmission system operators
(TSOs). While the addition of these components assure compliance they have an impact
on the overall reliability and, in an offshore environment, the reliability factor is
paramount. A new approach which can be taken by the industry is to rethink the design
of their offshore energy devices. In a “farm” like configuration, a different approach
can be taken to make the farm compliant rather than involving each individual device.
This approach can also be applied for any offshore renewable energy system using
synchronous generators. Furthermore onshore locations could benefit from this
configuration especially when remote.
The performance of the new approach is analyzed, while general guidelines and
recommendations imposed by the industry are applied in the analysis. By analyzing the
results produced by the simulation model the guidelines for efficient synchronization
and load sharing are presented. The simulation model is used to simulate generator
paralleling, electromagnetic torque analysis and load transients. A scaled down
prototype Wind Farm (WF) was also constructed and its results analyzed and compared
to the simulation model. Practical measurements and observations are highlighted and
analyzed. Wind speed is entered in the model to simulate behavior of the new approach
in different conditions. Fault ride through and ride through capabilities of the model are
also partially studied.

▼ Wind energy is by far the fastest growing renewable energy due to its free availability and environmental benefits. Maximum power extraction is a way to realize high power efficiency for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). This thesis focuses on studying the feasibility of implementing the Incremental Conductance (INC) method that has been used till now for Maximum Power Point Tracking in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Direct Driven Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (
PMSG) which has no gearbox is utilized in the proposed system to reduce the cost and increase the reliability of the wind turbine. A certain power conditioning topology which includes an Intermediate Boost Converter (IBC) is employed to facilitate the use of this control method. INC method is compared with the traditional Hill Climbing Search (HCS) method and the advantages of using the INC method in some operation conditions, is validated. A Matlab Simulink model is built to verify this approach.

▼ This project is part of the project “GenPowerBox”; this is a project of the company Mastervolt, realized by Whisper Power. The objective of this project is to develop a compact and noiseless energy management system for use on board of yachts. The “GenPowerBox” system is composed of a battery and a generator set; consisting of a diesel engine and a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). This MSc project is focused on the Permanent Magnet generator. The generator is integrated in the flywheel of the diesel engine. The main objective of this project is to determinate the most suitable generator for the application on yachts. Another goal is to validate the models of different generators designs. These models represent the induced voltage, different losses and the efficiency of the generator. This is done by performing several tests on different prototypes of both 3kW and 9kW generators. The measurements results are then compared with the simulated results. The distinctions between the designs consist of: - The type of the permanent magnets (ferrite or NdFeB), - The combination of number of poles and slots (2/3 or 8/9), and - The type of the slots (Open or semi-closed slots).

▼ This thesis is a study on an unconventional slow speed direct drive permanent magnet (PM) generator. Unlike a standard permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) which has the copper coils wound around iron teeth, the work in this thesis will present a generator where the copper coils are directly mounted on the stator which eliminates the slots and teeth in the generator. By having a slotless design it is possible to eliminate cogging torque, iron losses in teeth and achieve a lightweight design. These characteristics can prove useful when developing generators for an application such as wind turbines, or more specifically vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) in remote areas where weight and serviceability is of concern. This thesis consists of two main parts where the main focus was on the design and simulation of slotless generators. The second part of the thesis was to investigate an available slotless axial flux machine. For the simulations, three different models were created in 2D using CAD software. Two of the models were double-rotor slotless generators and one was a single rotor variant. The electromagnetic properties of these models were analysed using FEMM and COMSOL. The results showed that the double rotor variant with the smaller magnets were more favourable considering the price of magnets and no iron core losses. The experimental results of the axial flux machine gave insight into the construction of commercially available axial slotless generators which could be used to further analyse these types of machines.

▼ The current state of art for electrical power generated by wind generators are in alternating current (AC). Wind farms distribute this power as 3-phase AC. There are inherent stability issues with AC power distribution. The grid power transfer capacity is limited by the distance and characteristic impedance of the lines. Furthermore, wind generators have to implement complicated, costly, and inefficient back-to-back converters to generate AC. AC distribution does not offer an easy integration of energy storage. To mitigate drawbacks with AC generation and distribution, direct current (DC) generation and high voltage direct current (HVDC) distribution for the wind farms is proposed. DC power distribution is inherently stable. The generators convert AC power to DC without the use of a back-to-back converter. DC grid offers an easy integration of energy storage.
The proposed configuration for the generator is connected to a HVDC bus using a 12 pulse thyristor network, which can apply Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). To properly control the system, several estimators are designed and applied. This includes a firing angle, generator output voltage, and DC current estimators to reduce noise effects. A DSP-based controller is designed and implemented to control the system and provide gate pulses. Performance of the proposed system under faults and drive train torque pulsation are analyzed as well. Additionally, converter paralleling when turbines operate at different electrical power levels are also studied. The proposed new Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) is described in detail and verified using MATLAB®/ Simulink® simulation and experimental test setup. The proposed solution offers higher reliability, lower conversion power loss, and lower cost. The following is proposed as future work:
1) Study different control methods for controlling the SCR's.
2) Investigate reducing torque pulsations of the
PMSG and using the proposed power conversion method for DFIG turbines.
3) Explore options for communication/control between
PMSG, circuit protection and grid-tied inverters.
4) Investigate the best possible configuration for DC storage/connection to the HVDC/MVDC bus.
5) Study the filtering needed to improve the DC bus voltage at the generator.

▼ Small signal oscillation has been always a major concern in the operation of power systems. In a generator, the electromechanical coupling between the rotor and the rest of the system causes it to behave in a manner similar to a spring mass damper system. Following any disturbance, such as sudden change in loads, actuations in the output of turbine and faults etc. it exhibits an oscillatory behaviour around the equilibrium state. The use of fast acting high gain AVRs and evolution of large interconnected power systems with transfer of bulk power across weak transmission links have further aggravated the problem of these low frequency oscillations. Small oscillations in the range of about 0.1Hz to 3.5Hz can persist for long periods, limiting the power transfer capability of the transmission lines. These oscillations can be reduced by incorporating auxiliary controllers on generator excitation system.
Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) were developed to produce additional damping by modulating the generator excitation voltage. Designing effective PSS for all operating conditions especially in large interconnected power systems still remains a difficult and challenging task.
More and more power electronic based controllers have been and will be used in power systems. Many of these controllers such as Static Var Compensators (SVCs), Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOMs) and Unified Power Flow Controllers (UPFCs) etc., are incorporated in power transmission networks to improve its operational capability. In addition, some of the energy storage systems such as Battery Energy Storage systems (BESS), Super conducting Magnetic Energy Storage System (SMES) as well large non-conventional energy sources are also increasingly being integrated with the power grid. With large integration of these devices, there is a significant impact on system stability, more importantly on small signal oscillatory instability of the power system.
This thesis primarily focuses on impact of such devices on small signal oscillatory stability of the power systems. More specifically in this thesis small signal stability analysis of a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system with a grid connected wind powered Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (
PMSG) has been presented. A SMIB system has been purposely chosen so that general conclusions can be obtained on the behaviour of the embedded STATCOM/Energy Source (ES) system on system stability. With a better understanding of the impact of such a system it would be probably possible to analyze more complicated multimachine power system and their impact on system stability. Small signal model of the complete system which comprises the generator, transmission network, inter connecting STATCOM, the wind power generator and all associated controllers has been developed. The performances of the system following a small disturbance at various operating conditions have been analyzed.
To obtain quantitative estimates of the damping and synchronizing torques generated in the system, expressions for damping…

This work deals with an Integrated Optimal Design (IOD) methodology of a full passive wind turbine system offering very good tradeoff in terms of cost, reliability and performance. Without active electronic device (power and MPPT control), efficiency of such architecture can only be obtained if all devices are mutually adapted: this can be achieved through an Integrated Optimal Design (IOD) approach. Wind energy extraction as whole losses are then optimized from a multiobjective genetic algorithm which aims at concurrently optimizing the energy efficiency while reducing the weight of the wind turbine system given a wind cycle. The whole system (turbine, generator, diode reducer, battery DC bus) has been modeled to obtain optimization results and finally to select a particular solution for an experimental validation. On the one hand, the obtained results put forward coherency between models and experience. On the other hand, given a reference wind cycle, it is possible to obtain optimal devices (generator – reducer – DC bus) whose energy efficiency is nearly equivalent to the ones obtained with active and more complex systems with MPPT control. Based on a sensitivity analysis of performance versus parametric uncertainties, one major contribution deals with a design methodology integrating robustness issues inside the optimization process.

Nowadays, the exploitation of renewable energies in order to generate electricity is growing steadily because they are unlimited resources, free and don’t cause waste or polluting emissions. In this context, it is proposed to study one of these types of energy, which is marine currents energy. In particular, we are interested in fault-tolerant control of tidal turbines. The potential for power generation from marine currents is estimated at 100GW in the world. However, tidal turbines are submitted to severe operational and environmental constraints. These constraints inevitably will lead to these systems performance degradation and the acceleration of their aging process, thus leading to the occurrence of mechanical and/or electrical faults. The implementation of fault-tolerant control techniques will improve the tidal turbines reliability, performance, and reduce costs relating to maintenance operations. The aim of this thesis is to study, model, and simulate a tidal turbine system in healthy and faulty conditions (either in the converter (switch open circuit) or in the permanent magnet synchronous generator (magnet failure). Various fault-tolerant control approaches are therefore evaluated and compared under these specific failure It…

▼ This thesis focuses on the development of power management control strategies for a direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based variable speed wind turbine (VSWT). Two modes of operation have been considered: (1) isolated/islanded mode, and (2) grid-connected mode.
In the isolated/islanded mode, the system requires additional energy sources and sinks to counterbalance the intermittent nature of the wind. Thus, battery energy storage and photovoltaic (PV) systems have been integrated with the wind turbine to form a microgrid with hybrid energy sources. For the wind/battery hybrid system, several energy management and control issues have been addressed, such as DC link voltage stability, imbalanced power flow, and constraints of the battery state of charge (SOC). To ensure the integrity of the microgrid, and to increase its flexibility, dump loads and an emergency back-up AC source (can be a diesel generator set) have been used to protect the system against the excessive power production from the wind and PV systems, as well as the intermittent nature of wind source. A coordinated control strategy is proposed for the dump loads and back up AC source.
An alternative control strategy is also proposed for a hybrid wind/battery system by eliminating the dedicated battery converter and the dump loads. To protect the battery against overcharging, an integrated control strategy is proposed. In addition, the dual vector voltage control (DVVC) is also developed to tackle the issues associated with unbalanced AC loads.
To improve the performance of a DC microgrid consisting wind, battery, and PV, a distributed control strategy using DC link voltage (DLV) based control law is developed. This strategy provides simpler structure, less frequent mode transitions, and effective coordination among different sources without relying on real-time communication.
In a grid-connected mode, this DC microgrid is connected to the grid through a single inverter at the point of common coupling (PCC). The generated wind power is only treated as a source at the DC side for the study of both unbalanced and balanced voltage sag issues at a distribution grid network.
The proposed strategy consists of: (i) a vector current control with a feed-forward of the negative-sequence voltage (VCCF) to compensate for the negative sequence currents; and (ii) a power compensation factor (PCF) control for the VCCF to maintain the balanced power flow between the system and the grid. A sliding mode control strategy has also been developed to enhance the overall system performance. Appropriate grid code has been considered in this case.
All the developed control strategies have been validated via extensive computer simulation with realistic system parameters. Furthermore, to valid developed control strategies in a realistic environment in real-time, a microgrid has been constructed using physical components: a wind turbine simulator (WTS), power electronic converters, simulated grid, sensors, real-time controllers and protection devices. All the…

▼ Wind turbine has been popular in the area of renewable
energy source. Wind turbine has shown the biggest growth in the
past 10 years compared to other renewable sources. Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Generator (
PMSG) used as wind turbine generator.
PMSG
is suitable for the application due to its high efficiency, high
torque-to-size ratio, and low maintenance requirement. The
intermittent characteristic of wind requires a wind turbine to have
good control system. This thesis discusses the Field Oriented
Control (FOC) and Hysteresis Current Control (HCC) technique used
to control the generator-side and grid-side respectively. In order
to perform these controls, good understanding of the
PMSG and
electrical grid are required. In addition, reference frame theory
and Space Vector Modulation are explained as supplement theories
used for the Field Oriented Control. A MATLAB/Simulink simulation
has been developed to simulate the control
algorithms.
