Pontificalis honor: a re-evaluation of priestly Auctoritas and sacro-political violence in the transition from republic to principate.

▼ This thesis examines the transition from the Roman republic to the Principate of Augustus through the lens of the pontifex maximus, the office of the head of the pontifical college. Despite burgeoning interest in this role, current scholarship still regards the elevation of the chief pontiff to a politically significant position as a by-product of Caesar’s ambition and, subsequently, Octavian’s quest for both power and legitimacy. It is my contention that the trajectory of this priesthood’s ascendancy has been incorrectly plotted and that a proper understanding of the pontificate requires an analysis of the events surrounding the politically motivated murder of a tribune by the chief pontiff in 133 and subsequently over the next century.
After a survey of literature and a summary of the key features of the office, the thesis argues that the position of chief pontiff had long since conferred a stable prominence which was unique in the Roman republic. This prominence brought with it a particular kind of power which interacted with the auctoritas of the men who occupied the priesthood: in this way, the holders of an office which was bound up with some of the most revered traditions of the city were empowered to improvise courses of action which further enhanced the standing and influence of the chief pontiffs. It was through this cycle of action and perception that the pontifex maximus became a mechanism of political change – and was itself transformed in the process. In considering this cycle, particular emphasis is placed on the phenomenon of ‘sacro-political’ violence which, as a novelty instigated by one chief pontiff, became a recurrent motif in Roman political life thereafter.
I argue that Scipio Nasica Serapio made deliberate use of his office to sanction an intervention which would have serious consequences for the republic and which radically altered how the Romans saw this priesthood. The thesis then explores how subsequent holders of the office either negotiated or exploited this ‘legacy’ to further their careers, to respond to unprecedented constitutional crises or simply to stay alive.
Although all the pontifices maximi from 141 B.C. to 14 AD are considered, this thesis focuses on the lives and times of Nasica Serapio, Quintus Scaevola, Julius Caesar and Augustus as their tenures are particularly emblematic of the tensions between the mos maiorum and an increasingly extreme political climate. I argue that the new dispensation established by the first princeps, with all the restorationist rhetoric which accompanied it, relied decisively on Augustus’ assumption of the role. Even if Augustus had absorbed virtually all of the available priesthoods, the long wait he had to endure for the office of chief pontiff says a great deal about the nature of the pontificate and its strategic value to the heir of Caesar.
Two case-study Appendices discuss the disputed pontificate of Q. Servilius Caepio and the relationship between Cicero, Clodius and the pontifical college. These studies exemplify the…

▼ This thesis will examine Horace’s two books of Satires and his collection of Epodes and will look at three main aspects of the collections: how the three volumes are connected through a shared dialogue with each other, the issue of genre and the task of literary self- fashioning against a problematic political landscape. In particular, I will look at the influence of Lucilius on Horace and show how Horace’s reworking of Lucilian satire plays a vital role in his presentation of himself and his development as a poet. I will examine the Lucilian allusions and intertextuality found within Horace’s work and will show how Horace’s treatment of iambic poetry is connected to his refashioning of Lucilian satire.
Horace’s first book of Satires, where the poet announces himself with his updated version of Lucilius’ genre, works as a vital reference point for the following two collections. I will show how the three volumes are linked through repeated references to and echoes of each other as Horace employs his previous work for different effects throughout the collections. I will examine how Horace continually uses what has gone before – either his own work or that of his generic predecessor Lucilius – to progress and establish himself as a poet.
I will also consider the political context of Horace’s early work and the effect of this on Horace’s establishment as a poet and his handling of different genres. I will show how Horace adopts and adapts satire and iambic poetry to create literary works appropriate for both the poetic and political tastes of his time.

▼ This work is the first translation into a modern language of book 1 of the Libri Medicinales of Aëtius of Amida, a Byzantine physician who wrote in the middle of the 6th century AD. It comprises a lengthy preface, describing the analysis of pharmacological materials in terms of the science of the time, followed by 418 chapters, listing such materials obtained from plants. Commentary is to be found in the Introduction, as well as a running commentary after each part of the preface and each chapter. As Aëtius’ book 1 is a synopsis of the plants section of Galen’s On the Mixtures and Capacities of Simple Drugs, particular attention is paid to comparison between Aëtius’ work and that of Galen. Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of the ancient drugs in the light of modern scientific knowledge, a relatively neglected area of research, has also been given serious consideration.

▼ This thesis is a critical edition, with introduction, translation and partial commentary, of the Automata, a two-book mechanical treatise written by Hero of Alexandria (first century CE). It provides the first commentary on BOOK ONE, dealing with the construction of a mobile, as opposed to a stationary, automaton.
The preface summarises the significance, aims and limitations of the work. The opening section gives a summary of some of the conventions and abbreviations used in the thesis, and is followed by a list of figures.
The introduction provides a context for an informed reading of the text. It consists of six parts. Part One discusses the ‘Heronian question’, with particular attention to the chronology of the Automata and the Pneumatica. Part Two evaluates previous editions and translations, and summarises the main novelties of this study. Part Three assesses the manuscript tradition, including a stemmatic analysis of a large number of manuscripts. Part Four mainly discusses the various forms of the title of the treatise, which is reconstructed as Περὶ αὐτομάτων (On Automata). Greater uncertainty surrounds the heading of BOOK TWO, Περὶ στατῶν αὐτομάτων (On Stationary Automata), which may have been derived from Hero’s source, Philo of Byzantium (third-century BCE). Part Five focuses on the work itself. It starts with an overview of the structure of the text, with remarks on previous editorial practices. This is followed by a critical description of the contents of the treatise and by a discussion of the historical, literary and cultural background. This, in turn, allows for consideration of the performative context of Hero’s automata. Attention is then paid to the purpose and intended audience of the treatise, followed by an exploration of Hero’s relationship with his sources. A stylistic comparison with the Pneumatica sheds new light on Hero’s degree of originality, removing suspicions of interpolation. Finally, discussion turns to the status of the text. Internal inconsistencies are best explained as the result of incomplete authorial editing. Part Six addresses the principles of the edition.
The text, apparatus criticus and translation form the centre of the thesis. To maximise readability, the layout of the English translation mirrors the layout of the Greek text. The elucidation of the manuscript sigla and abbreviations used in the apparatus criticus precedes the text.
The commentary is mainly philological and text-critical in nature. However, it also addresses stylistic, interpretive and reconstructive issues, without failing to consider the oldest manuscript diagrams.
Following the commentary are six appendixes: (1) a concordance of editions; (2) addenda et corrigenda to Schmidt’s edition; (3) three stemmata codicum; (4) illustrations; (5) a review of Masià (2015); (6) an index of technical terms. Appendix (4) includes manuscript diagrams and reconstruction drawings of the mobile automaton. The thesis closes with a bibliography.

▼ Except for the pseudo-Euripidean Rhesus, fourth-century tragedy has almost entirely been lost to the ravages of time, known only through the quotation of a few isolated lines by later writers or preservation on some sand-worn scraps of papyrus. The poor survival of fourth-century tragedy has inevitably led to suggestions of low quality. Recent scholarship, however, has begun to revise these conclusions, recognising a remarkable inventiveness prevalent in the surviving fragments. This thesis aims to continue the rehabilitation of fourth-century tragedy and takes the form of a commentary on the fragments of Astydamas II, Carcinus II, Chaeremon, and Theodectas, the 'leading lights' of this period whose verses comprise over half of what remains. In the introduction, I focus on fourth-century tragedy in general and all its surviving fragments, even those not treated in the commentary. I begin by exploring the internationalisation of this genre and its spread to the Greek-speaking West and East. I then consider the prevalent themes and stylistic features of the fragments and examine fourth-century reaction to fourth-century tragedy, particularly in comedy, oratory, and philosophy. I also discuss fourth-century satyr drama and some of its best surviving examples, including Python's Agen. In the commentary, I provide a biography for each poet and explore their reception and that of their work. I then discuss each of their plays in turn, reconstructing plots where possible and providing information about other treatments of a myth in fifth- and fourth-century drama. Finally, I analyse each fragment, focusing on any textual issues, their literary, stylistic, and dramaturgical qualities, and on their relationship within the dramatic tradition and Greco-Roman literature. Through analysing the fragments in the form of a commentary, I hope to show that far from representing a 'terminal decline' as Edna Hooker once lamented, they instead display many remarkable qualities which make them worthy of study in their own right.

▼ The Páramo ecosystem is the most diverse high-altitude ecosystem on Earth with more than 4000 species of vascular plants. A naturally fragmented ecosystem, it also houses one of the youngest and fastest evolving biota. In this thesis, molecular data from the South American species of Oreobolus (Cyperaceae) and Páramo representatives within the Melastomeae tribe (Melastomataceae) were used to investigate the impact of Andean orogeny and recent climatic fluctuations on diversification processes. Chapter Two highlights the role of Andean uplift in the diversification of Páramo species of Oreobolus as shown by their faster diversification rates compared to other southern hemisphere species. It is suggested that Oreobolus may have reached South America from Australia during the Pliocene through two independent long-distance dispersal events to the northern and southern Andes. This strong north-south geographic structure is evident in the species phylogeny. Chapter Three is a phylogeographic study of the South American species of Oreobolus that reveals complex relationships between and within species. Levels of haplotype sharing, measures of genetic distinctiveness and recent divergence times point to incomplete lineage sorting confounding species boundaries. Additionally, the role in species diversification of the contraction and expansion of Páramo islands during the climatic fluctuations of the Quaternary is supported by genetic data. Chapter Four showed that colonisation of Páramo within the largely Neotropical Melastomeae tribe occurred repeatedly during the Pliocene. Species-poor Páramo lineages such as Castratella may highlight a possible role for extinction in some taxa. In Chapter Four I also suggested that frost adapted temperate lineages may have had an adaptative advantage that may have contributed towards a greater number of species at higher elevations.

▼ In this thesis, I explore Gregory’s conception and use of paideia in his poetry as understood in four main ways: (1) Gregory’s knowledge of, familiarity with, and utilisation/manipulation of the literary tradition. (2) His use of paideia as a communication code for self-fashioning, as well as for fashioning his friends and enemies. (3) His pedagogy, that is, the didactic methods used to teach biblical knowledge and theological doctrine. (4) The place of classical culture in the Christian (ascetic) life. In other words, Gregory’s conception of (a Christian) paideia. This thesis focuses upon particular (groups of) poems by Gregory that explore how exactly he puts into practice the episcopal identity which he forges for himself as prytanis of both sacred and profane wisdom.

The dissertation contributes to an area of knowledge that to date has received limited attention, namely the Karma Bka’-brgyud tradition of Buddhism. Specifically, it adds new insights into the life and work of one of his founding fathers rge renowned 12th century Buddhist master Dus-gsum-mkhyen-pa (Düsum Khyenpa). The research suggest that his main goal was to embody the bodhisattva ideal in Buddhism, i.e. making progress in capabilities in order to guide sentient beings in general and one’s students in particular. His main biography, the Gser gling – “A Golden World” –, offers a record of his own journey on the bodhisattva path. The biography dates from the early thirteenth century. The Gser gling itself is a unique record of how Düsum Khyenpa manifests the bodhisattva ideal, through ten past lifetimes, his 12th century life, and three future lifetimes. The Gser gling combines bodhisattva path and biography in an unprecedented way, and is based in large on words of the master himself. The dissertation also presents his “autobiographical notes”, Zhus lan 2, “An Exchange between Sgam-po-pa and Düsum Khyenpa”. This Zhus lan 2 describes Düsum Khyenpa’s “Awakening”, which itself is the main goal on the Buddhist path. Furthermore, the dissertation adds knowledge to a specific 15th century untitled group of works, which I call the “Düsum Khyenpa Collection”. The dissertation explores this collection of very diverse scriptures that all, in one way or another, are related to…

▼ Influenza A viruses remain a major public health
concern, as is evident by the
occurrence of annual epidemics and
occasional pandemics. Insight into the
interactions that occur
between influenza and its host will help to uncover targets for
novel therapies. One approach is to better understand the cellular
signaling events that
occur following infection. Our examination
of this revealed that mice deficient in the
MLK3 kinase disrupted
MAPK signaling and resulted in high viral titers present in
the
lung at late time points following infection. This was a
consequence of prolonged
survival of infected cells, which in turn
were able to produce virus for an extended
time. These data
implicate MLK3 as a pro-survival regulator during influenza
infection.
Additionally, it is well established that following
infection with influenza a
dramatic reduction of cellular protein
synthesis ensues, a phenomenon referred to as
shutoff. Although
evidence in the literature has suggested a role for the viral
polymerase complex in this process, how influenza does this remains
unknown.
Therefore, to investigate the contribution of the
polymerase complex to shutoff, we
utilized reporter gene assays to
evaluate the role of polymerase subunits on host
protein
expression. In this study, we found that the PA subunit is a
critical factor in
the initiation of shutoff. Of interest, in the
strains that we characterized, PA of avianorigin,
such as the
pandemic H1N1, were more efficient at inducing shutoff than
human-origin PA, such as WSN. This phenotype was confirmed in
comparison of
protein synthesis following infection with a
recombinant WSN virus containing Cal
PA and wild-type WSN.
Chimeric analysis revealed that the activity of PA
responsible for
shutoff was localized to the amino terminal domain of this
protein,
with the lysine at position 134 being critically involved
in the phenotype. Although
this is the catalytic lysine within the
endonuclease active site, endonuclease activity
was not required
for shutoff. Together, these results implicate PA as a critical
determinant in the inhibition of cellular protein synthesis
following infection. Overall,
these findings uncover novel
influenza-host interactions and protein functions that
should be
considered in the design of future therapeutic
agents.

These studies exemplify the prosopographical…

▼ This study considers anew the central question of Herodotus’ relationship with literary and textual sources. It examines how Herodotus comes to define his own work in a context where many artists (both narrative and visual) are seeking to accumulate, delineate, and ultimately dictate cultural memory. Rather than applying traditional Quellenforschung, my analysis centres on examining significant intertextual and allusive relationships in his work. In each chapter, I address the nature of Herodotus’ engagement with certain textual rivals/genres, namely early prose writers, inscriptions, poets (expecially Homer, Simonides, Aeschylus, Sophocles), and oracles. From this emerges a highly nuanced engagement with myriad texts in the Histories (principally: as authoritative voices; as persuasive evidence; and as voices for disputation). Such engagement furnishes considerable authority for the writer of the Histories, to the extent that he provides a superior view of the past, compared to the more limited, partisan perspectives offered by his textual rivals. My study reinforces the salient point that Herodotus is no historian in any modern sense of the word; his interaction with other literary traditions does not appear in a way that is expected of an academic monograph. Nevertheless the evidence for his engagement with a wide and diverse group of texts—both contemporary and non-contemporary—clearly militates against the consensual view that Herodotus was working with predominantly unfixed, oral traditions. Indeed, through this interplay with other literary works Herodotus most clearly defines for the reader his own unique intellectual achievement: the invention of historiography.

▼ This thesis is entitled ‘Classical Elements in Early Christian Depictions of the Afterlife’. Taking an approach influenced by Reception studies, it explores some key moments where Christians engage in a dialogue with their pagan predecessors. The focus is primarily on Latin literature, although a limited selection of art and Greek literature has been included where particularly revealing. The aim of this work is to use a series of case studies in order to demonstrate the cross-pollination of ideas and to show that in late antiquity, Christian authors in the Latin West were reacting to their pagan antecedents in a variety of different ways. Through close readings of several key texts this thesis will examine moments of cultural interchange and allow us to think about some specific and illuminating examples of a complex and nuanced relationship. In the first few centuries AD Christian ideas about what happens when we die were still fluid, so the afterlife provides a particularly fruitful basis for exploring wider questions about the relationship between paganism and Christianity.

▼ This dissertation approaches Hellenistic astrology as a case study for 'Cultural translation' in the Greco-Roman world. 'Cultural translation' denotes here the transition of ideas and knowledge from one culture to another, making them available in the recipient culture by the ‘translation’ in its broader sense, using recipient’s own already familiar intellectual and cultural concepts. The spread of Greek culture and the adoption of non-Greek elements into it during the Hellenistic times resulted in new hybrid Hellenistic culture based at Alexandria. Around the middle of the 2nd century BC astrology in its Hellenized form appeared there as a fully developed set of doctrines that Classical authors argued to have been the discoveries of the Chaldeans. Astrology, however, was not taken over from Babylonia per se, but was an assimilation and invention at the same time. This has led some scholars to argue that Hellenistic astrology was an invention in its own right and its philosophical rational and doctrine of interpretation are Hellenistic Greek in origin. This dissertation aims to discover what was 'Hellenistic' about Hellenistic astrology, to what extent it was derived from its Babylonian predecessor and through that to determine the role of the 'Oriental wisdom' in the Greco-Roman society.

▼ This thesis examines Demosthenes’ rhetorical use of Athenian ideology in his deliberative speeches from 351-341 BCE. I argue that during this period of crisis, which is usually narrated in terms of conflict with Macedonia, Demosthenes confronts an internal crisis within the Assembly. While Demosthenes’ deliberative speeches have traditionally been defined as ‘Philippic’, this thesis argues that the speeches do not prioritise an ‘Anti- Macedonian’ agenda, but rather focus on confronting the corruption of the deliberative decision-making process. Due to an attitude of apathy and neglect, Demosthenes’ rhetoric suggests that their external problems are a direct product of this internal crisis, both of which are perpetuated by their failure to recognise how self-sabotaging practices undermine the polis from within. As he asserts in On the Chersonese and the Third Philippic, they cannot hope to deal with their external situation before they deal with their internal crisis. To address this, I argue that Demosthenes’ parrhēsia interweaves criticism of the dēmos with the praise of Athens, using social memory and past exempla both to recall and prescribe didactically the attitudes central to Athenian identity. As such, I propose that the deliberative speeches do not confront a ‘Macedonian Question’, but a fundamentally Athenian one.

▼ Before the publication of Professor Richard Hunter’s Cambridge Classics edition in August 2015, the last large-scale commentary on Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica Book 4 was that of Enrico Livrea in Italian in 1973, though mention should be made of the Budé volumes edited by Vian (1974–81). During this period the literary study of the poem has undergone a virtual revolution. The present thesis is an attempt to update and advance the work of the poem’s previous editors. It is intended as a prolegomenon to a commentary on the whole Book. Apollonius’ epic is an outstanding example of Hellenistic poetic practice, embodying all of its allusive qualities. It draws on the entire tradition of previous Greek literature, while maintaining an innovative point-of-view. This commentary tries to elucidate Apollonius’ experiments with respect to all aspects of style and narration, viewing him both as an important literary critic, closely involved in maintaining the inheritance of Classical Greece, and as a creative artist intent on developing an individual voice. The section chosen for commentary exhibits many aspects of Apollonius’ artistry: passages of atmospheric description, action sequences which speed the narrative, speeches, in some of which irony predominates while in others rhetoric prevails, similes which often contain fine images and a macabre climax of chilling power which achieves its effects through a number of striking and original details. There are, therefore, many reasons why the poem as a whole was enormously influential on Latin epic, especially on Virgil’s Aeneid, and why the story and Apollonius’ methods of retelling it enjoyed such an important reception in the European tradition.

▼ This work is the first full-length study of the dissemination of Greek tragedy in the earliest period of the history of drama. In recent years, especially with the growth of reception studies, scholars have become increasingly interested in studying drama outside its fifth century Athenian performance context. As a result, it has become all the more important to establish both when and how tragedy first became popular across the Greek world. This study aims to provide detailed answers to these questions. In doing so, the thesis challenges the prevailing assumption that tragedy was, in its origins, an exclusively Athenian cultural product, and that its ‘export’ outside Attica only occurred at a later period. Instead, I argue that the dissemination of tragedy took place simultaneously with its development and growth at Athens. We will see, through an examination of both the material and literary evidence, that non-Athenian Greeks were aware of the works of Athenian tragedians from at least the first half of the fifth century. In order to explain how this came about, I suggest that tragic playwrights should be seen in the context of the ancient tradition of wandering poets, and that travel was a usual and even necessary part of a poet’s work. I consider the evidence for the travels of Athenian and non-Athenian poets, as well as actors, and examine their motives for travelling and their activities on the road. In doing so, I attempt to reconstruct, as far as possible, the circuit of festivals and patrons, on which both tragedians and other poetic professionals moved. This study thus aims to both chart the process of tragedy’s dissemination and to situate the genre within the context of the broader ‘song culture’ of the Greek wandering poet.

▼ It has been long acknowledged that Lucian employs various forms of allusion to the Iliad and Odyssey across his writings. This thesis builds on previous studies — which have produced taxonomic analyses of allusion, (mis)quotation and parody — to explore more fully the intertextual richness and complexity of Lucian’s writing that such approaches can paradoxically conceal. Works such as Charon, Hercules, Alexander and several of the miniature dialogues are examined in depth, especially those which have received less attention previously and those in which Lucian can be most clearly seen engaging with the Homeric text, whether at the level of whole scenes, through quotation of short passages, by the construction of parodies and centos, or in drawing attention to lexical details. This examination reveals how such techniques are used to signal Lucian’s close familiarity with the author who was the ultimate talisman of sophistic paideia. Lucian is revealed as re-reading and re-presenting Homer in clever, mischievous, even ‘postmodern’ ways to produce striking effects which make his work both accessible and amusing to ancient audiences across a range of levels of education, from those who knew the main features of Homeric stories and language to those who were intimately familiar with allegorical interpretations of Homer and Alexandrian scholarly controversies over textual minutiae. This is complemented by analysis of Lucian’s presentation of material from the biographical traditions about Homer as man and poet, a topic which has been less studied but which leads to consideration of the role played by Homer both in Lucian’s reflections on truth and lying and in the examination, by this Greek-speaking Syrian, of cultural relations between Greeks and non-Greeks in the cosmopolitan Mediterranean world of the second century.

▼ How were Greek plays viewed in the fifth century BCE and by deepening our understanding of their visual dimension might we increase our knowledge of the plays themselves? The aim of this study is to set out the importance of the visual (opsis) when considering ancient Greek drama and provide a basis for constructing a form of “visual dramaturgy” that can be effectively applied to the texts. To that end, this work is divided into five sections, which follow a “top-down” analysis of ancient dramatic visuality. The analysis begins with a survey of the prevailing visual culture and Greek attitudes about sight and the eye. Following this is an examination of the roots of drama in the performance of public collective movement forms (what I have called “symporeia”) and their relationships to the environments they moved through, including the development of the fifth century theatre at the Sanctuary of Dionysos Eleuthereus in Athens. The focus then falls on the dramatic mask and it is proposed here that operating in this environment it was the visual focus of Greek drama and the primary conveyer of the emotional content of the plays. Drawing on new research from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience relating to facial processing and recognition, gaze direction, foveal and peripheral vision and neural responses to masks, movement and performance, it is explained how the fixed dramatic mask was an incredibly effective communicator of dramatic emotion capable of eliciting intensely individual responses from its spectators. This study concludes with a case study based on Aeschylus Oresteia and the raising of Phidias’ colossal bronze statue of Athena on the Acropolis and the impact that this may have had on the original reception of the trilogy.

▼ This thesis presents a new Latin text of the Prolegomena and accompanying prefatory material of the Cologne 1642 edition of the Virgil commentary by the Spanish Jesuit scholar Juan Luis De La Cerda. It provides an original English translation of this material along with explanatory notes which focus upon the social, educational, intellectual and political influences that informed La Cerda's work. The notes also take account of some of the rhetorical and stylistic aspects of La Cerda's work. An introduction situates the work in its cultural and intellectual context and provides a clear overview of the structure and composition of the Prolegomena.

▼ Aristophanes allows Euripides to interrupt constantly. In Athenian comedy of the fifth century they are on stage together, both literally and figuratively. Despite Aristophanes’ comedies having a meaning of their own, Euripides’ lines are so clearly visible underneath them that they can only be described as the verbal equivalent of a palimpsest. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a palimpsest as a manuscript or piece of writing on which later writing has superimposed or effaced earlier writing, or something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. It is clear that a palimpsest is the product of layering that results in something as new, whilst still bearing traces of the original. Dillon describes the palimpsest as " ... an involuted phenomenon where otherwise unrelated texts are involved and entangled, intricately interwoven, interrupting and inhabiting each other". Aristophanes takes texts, particularly those of Euripides, which may otherwise have been unrelated, and weaves them together to form something new. I will show that in a number of cases Aristophanes offers scenes that have already been performed in Euripides’ plays but lays his own plot over the tragedian’s, whilst at the same time drawing the audiences’ attention to the original. The nature of this borrowing overwrites Kristeva’s theory of ‘intertextuality’ and provides a new and more apposite name for the permutation of texts in which the geno-text corresponds to infinite possibilities of palimpsestuous textuality (and the pheno-text to a singular text, which contains echoes of what it could have been). The plurality of Euripides’ texts, whilst engendering those of Aristophanes, constantly interrupts them. Through the consideration of ancient and modern literary theory and by a close analysis of Aristophanes’ and Euripides’ plays, this thesis sets out to offer a new reading of the relationship between these two poets. It shows that they were engaged in a dialogue of reciprocal influence that came to a head at the end of the Peloponnesian War.

While it is difficult to demonstrate an exact mode of operation for power amplifiers at radio frequencies, based on the characteristics of the transistor itself, the argument can be made that our high efficiency performance is due to an approximation to class E operation. The
PA is designed around a CGH40025 transistor manufactured by Cree, Inc, which has developed a very useful nonlinear model of its transistor, which allows use of software load/source pull methods to determine optimum impedances to be presented to the gate and drain (hereafter referred to as source and load) of the transistor at each band of operation. A recent work on dual-band impedance matching is then used to design distributed element networks in order to present conjugate matches of these impedances to the transistor. This is followed by a careful layout, after which the
PA is then fabricated on a low-impedance substrate using a LPKF Protomat S63 rapid prototyping machine. Measurements of gain and drain current provide values for power-added-efficiency. Simulated gains were 21 and 18 dB at 800 MHz and 1.85 GHz, respectively, with PAE around 63% for both bands. Measurements taken from the fabricated
PA showed gains of 20 and 16 dB at each band, but PAE of 80% at 800 MHz and 43% at 1.85 GHz.

▼ Private initiators, freelance religious practitioners who worked for a fee, offered their clients a better fate after death. I survey the evidence for their activities in classical Greece, and try to determine the date they came into being, which I suggest may be the end of the fifth century, their relation to other forms of religion such as the cult of Dionysus and mainstream polis religion, and their views of the afterlife. I argue that they did not belong to anything that could be called a sect, a concept anachronistic for this period, and that they did not have a coherent doctrine of the afterlife, but rather employed a patchwork of different and inconsistent concepts. In particular, there is no evidence that they belonged to a group of Orphics in the sense in which this term is used by modern scholars. There is, however, a basic similarity which can be seen in a number of disparate sources. I look at the Pythagorean Notebooks, the lex sacra of Selinous, the funerary gold leaves and the Derveni Papyrus to find a common underlying pattern, featuring the survival of the soul after death, a division between those with a better and a worse fate after death, enforced by hostile divine powers, and an initiation ritual to neutralise these and secure for its adherents the better outcome.

This PhD work deals with the impact and post-impact behavior of a fully bio-based composite made of flax fibresand Polyamide 11. The first goal was to optimize the hot…

▼ Influenza A viruses cause seasonal epidemics and
occasional pandemics in humans. All 16 hemagglutinin and 9
neuraminidase subtypes have been detected in wild waterfowl, but
only limited strains can infect humans. The emergence of new
influenza strains in humans can lead to pandemics, and this process
may occur through two distinct mechanisms: reassortment of viral
genes, or direct mutation. Viral reassortment of human, avian,
and/or swine genes typically occurs in an intermediate swine host.
The introduction of a new hemagglutinin or neuraminidase subtype to
the human population can lead to the emergence of pandemics as
occurred in the 1957, 1968, and 2009 influenza pandemics. Direct
mutation of avian viruses allowing for human adaptation is an
additional mechanism for the emergence of new viral strains in
humans, as likely occurred in the 1918 pandemic. Direct infection
of humans with highly pathogenic H5N1 avian viruses is possible and
has occurred in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The
mutations required for host adaptation are found in multiple viral
genes, including the hemagglutinin and the heterotrimeric
RNA-dependent RNA polymerase comprised of PA, PB1, and PB2.
Previous studies have revealed a single mutation in PB2, E627K,
significantly enhances polymerase activity and pathogenicity in the
mammalian host. Conversely, avian polymerases that contain PB2 627E
typically result in low activity and pathogenicity in mammalian
cells and hosts. However, some highly pathogenic H5N1 avian
influenza viruses lack PB2 627K, but cause severe disease in
mammals. The mechanism of adaptation of these highly pathogenic PB2
627E viruses is unknown.
We hypothesized that additional,
unidentified changes in the polymerase complex can contribute to
enhanced polymerase activity and pathogenicity of avian influenza
strains in mammalian species.
To identify the components and
mutations responsible for polymerase activity in the mammalian
host, we analyzed the activity of human and avian influenza
polymerase complexes using a minigenome polymerase activity assay.
In avian DF-1 cells, polymerase complexes from the human strain
A/Aichi/2/68 (Aichi, H3N2) and avian strain
A/chicken/Nanchang/3-120/01 (Nan, H3N2) were highly active. In
human 293T cells, however, the Aichi complex was highly active,
while the activity of the avian Nan complex was very low.
Single-gene replacement experiments revealed that the avian Nan
activity defect in mammalian cells was due to the avian PB2 gene,
because replacement with the human Aichi PB2 significantly
increased Nan polymerase activity in mammalian 293T cells.
To
identify amino acids responsible for this phenotype, we compared
human and avian PB2 sequences, and found 10 highly conserved
residues specific to either human or avian influenza strains. We
introduced human conserved residues into the avian Nan PB2, and
analyzed their contribution to polymerase activity. As expected,
the mutation E627K significantly increased Nan polymerase activity
in 293T cells. Additionally, the avian to…

▼ Lampreys are one of the two jawless vertebrate groups in Agnatha. The adult’s life is shorter than the larval stage which is known as “ammocoete”. They are either in parasitic forms or non-parasitic forms. Parasitic adults attach to other species, rely on the blood or flesh of the hosts, and non-parasitic adults die after spawning. There is little historical data on lampreys because ammocoetes are filter feeders who are in the sediment, and captures of adults were all by chance. The objectives I achieved in this study were included: 1) Compiled all existing
PA historical data (prior to 1990s) of lampreys and created database and distribution maps for each species; 2) Sampled historical sites for native lampreys in 2011 by using backpack designed for ammocoetes, documented changes in lamprey communities at the watershed scale; 3) Conducted substrate sampling at sites where ammocoetes were present, analyzed substrate size preferred by ammocoetes; 4) Identified collections to species, compared the current data and historical data to see the presence and absence of native lamprey species and value the changes of distributions.
In Pennsylvania, 7 species were found historically. They are Lampetra aepyptera, Lampetra appendix, Ichthyomyzon bdellium, Ichthyomyzon fossor, Ichthyomyzon greeleyi, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, Petromyzon marinus, among which I. fossor and I. unicuspis are endangered, and other species are in concern. In 2011, 21 streams were inspected, 18 creeks were sampled by using an ammocoete backpack shocker designed in Dr. Stauffer’s lab, and 4 species- Lampetra aepyptera, Lampetra appendix, Ichthyomyzon greeleyi and Petromyzon marinus were found in 14 creeks statewide. Lampreys were extinct at some sites because of flow regulation, channelization, poor water quality, and chemical treatments. In tributaries of Lake Erie, Sea Lamprey treatment might be a major reason to the population declining of other native species. Substrate size and water velocity are the most important factors determine the presence and absence of larval lampreys, so substrate samples were collected at 5 sites where ammocoetes were present. Differences on size of the sediments were found between lamprey spots and non-lamprey spots. Ammocoetes prefer smaller sized substrate with particle diameter less than 0.25mm in shallow, warm waters with dissolved organic matter. This study elaborated the current status of different larval lamprey species and indicated that their distributional range is shrinking and there might be a declining trend of native lamprey species although abundance survey was not implemented.
