▼ Glyceollin phytoalexins are the pathogen-elicited defense metabolites that belong to the isoflavonoid family of molecules of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr). Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean caused by Phytophthora sojae is a destructive disease throughout the soybean-growing regions worldwide causing devastating economic damages (globally 1-2 billion and over 250 million in the USA) every year. Engineering soybean plants that produce higher levels of glyceollins could confer resistance against this pathogen. Glyceollins also show anticancer and neuroprotective activities in mammals, therefore they are important for agriculture and medical research. Firstly, we were interested in understanding how biotic and chemical elicitors regulate glyceollin biosynthesis differently. We found that combining the biotic elicitor WGE (wall glucan elicitor) extracted for P. sojae and the chemical elicitor silver nitrate had an additive effect on the elicitation of glyceollins I. They elicited glyceollins by separate biosynthetic mechanisms. We treated soybean seedlings with a panel of abiotic stress conditions and found that acidic medium elicited the highest amount of glyceollins in root tissues of 1700µg gt^-1(gram tissue, Fresh Weight). Then we focused on the identification of transcription factors (TFs) that regulate the biosynthesis of glyceollins in response to abiotic and biotic stress. Based on a comparative transcriptomics approach using RNA-seq, we chose to functionally characterize the NAC (NAM/ATAF1/CUC2) family TF GmNAC42-1, a homolog of the camalexin regulator ANAC042 from Arabidopsis and an R2R3-MYB (myeloblastosis)-type TF GmMYB29A2, the homolog of the stilbene regulator VvMYB14 from grapevine. Overexpressing and RNAi silencing of GmNAC42-1 and GmMYB29A2 in WGE-elicited hairy roots resulted in significantly increased and decreased accumulation of glyceollin metabolites and biosynthesis gene transcripts such as glycinol 4-dimethylallyl transferase (G4DT) and isoflavone synthase2 (IFS2). The GmNAC42–1 and GmMYB29A2 proteins directly bound the promoters of glyceollin biosynthesis genes IFS2 and G4DT in the yeast one-hybrid (Y1H) system and localized to the nucleus when expressed with an N-terminal green fluorescent protein (GFP) tag. EMSA (Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay) confirmed that MYB29A2 protein binds glyceollin gene promoters. Overall, our findings indicate that GmNAC42–1 and GmMYB29A2 are essential components of a glyceollin gene regulatory network (GRN) and could be used for the large-scale, economic bioproduction of glyceollins for therapeutic use and to enhance resistance against P. sojae. Membran hasarı, soğuk yanıtında görev alan genlerin ve transkripsiyon faktörlerinin stres toleransına aracılık etmesi için bir sinyal oluşturur. bZIP, MYB, NAC, NF-YB ve WRKY transkripsiyon faktörü aileleri abiyotik ve biyotik stres faktörlerine karşı bitki yanıtlarında önemli roller oynamaktadır. Bu çalışmada, bu transkripsiyon faktör ailesi genlerinin mRNA ifade düzeyleri, ayçiçeğinde soğuk stresine karşı potansiyel işlevlerini araştırmak için ilk kez çalışılmıştır. Ayçiçeği fideleri (15 günlük) çeĢitli zaman aralıklarında (0, 2g, 4g, 6g, 8g, 10g) bitki büyütme kabininde 4 °C‟de inkübe edilerek soğuk stresine maruz bırakılmıştır. Yaprak ve köklerde soğuk stresinin bZIP, MYB, NAC, NF-YB ve WRKY genlerinin ifade profili üzerindeki etkilerini anlamak için kantitatif gerçek zamanlı PZR yapılmıştır. Ayrıca, yapraklarda ve köklerde malondialdehit (MDA) ve toplam çözünebilir protein içerikleri tespit edilmiştir. Yapılan analizler sonucunda çalışmada kullanılan ayçiçeği çeşitleri arasında Tr-3080 çeşidinin daha duyarlı, Tarsan 1018 çeşidinin ise soğuk stres koşullarına karşı diğerlerine göre daha dirençli olduğu belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen tüm moleküler veriler birlikte değerlendirildiğinde bZIP, MYB, NAC, NF-YB ve WRKY genlerinin soğuk ile indüklendiği ve soğuk stresine yanıtta rol alabileceği söylenebilir. Ayrıca bu çalışmadan elde edilen verilerin soğuk stresine dayanıklı ayçiçeği çeşitlerinin elde edilmesine yönelik daha ileriki çalışmalara da katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. Cold stress is one of the most important environmental factors that limits the agricultural productivity of plants. Cold stress can cause serious membrane damage. Membrane damage leads to a signal for cold-responsive genes and transcription factors to mediate stress tolerance. bZIP, MYB, NAC, NF-YB and WRKY transcription factors families play important roles in plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this study, mRNA expression levels of this transcription factor family genes were investigated for the first time, to investigate their potential functions in response to cold stress in sunflower. Plants (15-day-old) were subjected to cold stress by incubating at 4°C in plant growth cabinet for in various time intervals (0, 2d, 4d, 6d, 8d, 10d). To understand the effects of cold stress on expression profile of bZIP, MYB, NAC, NF-YB and WRKY genes in leaves and roots, quantitative real time PCR was performed. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA) and total soluble protein contents in the leaves and the roots were detected. All results showed that among the varieties of sunflower used in the study, Tr-3080 species was more sensitive species, whereas Tarsan 1018 variety was more resistant to cold stress conditions than the others. ▼ Introduction. While opioid medications are commonly prescribed for management of neuropathic pain (NP), long-term use has been associated with increased risk for overdose, drug interactions and addiction. New strategies are necessary to better manage chronic pain, thereby reducing need for opioid medications and their associated adverse consequences. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an over-the-counter supplement, has shown promise in the treatment of psychiatric and addictive disorders. In addition, NAC has shown promise for reducing physiological signs of NP in laboratory rat models, prompting this study. Purpose. The present study was an open-label clinical trial of NAC as an adjuvant to opioid treatment for poorly controlled, chronic NP. It examined whether 1200 mg NAC twice daily for 4 weeks was associated with: lower ratings of patient-reported pain; reductions in PRN opioid medication for breakthrough pain; and improvements in physical and mental health quality of life (QoL). The study also examined whether appraisal of pain impacts response to medication. Method. Participants were N=28 chronic NP patients who consented to study participation. This consisted of 2 baseline assessments, 4 weeks of NAC and 1 post-trial follow-up visit. The majority (N=17) dropped out or were excluded during baseline. Of the remaining participants, N = 11 started the study medication and N=10 completed the study, with daily recordings of pain severity ratings and use of PRN opioid medication. Small sample size limited analyses to qualitative case reviews and effect sizes. Results. Over 90% of participants receiving NAC completed the study. Case review found varied results. While 4 of 10 participants showed decrease in average pain ratings during NAC, estimated effect sizes for the whole sample were small, bordering on negligible (ω² from .003 to .027) as were those for PRN opioids (Partial Eta-Squared=.0003). Effect size for mental health QoL was medium (Cohen's d=.421). Conclusions. With N=10, findings must be interpreted with caution. Nonetheless, the study found some albeit small evidence supporting NAC for improving mental health QoL and pain ratings. Several participants reported improvements in pain and mental health domains while taking NAC. NAC was well tolerated with minimal side effects. ▼ This study is concerned with a neglected aspect of the study of L2 English writing: the processes which teachers engage in when rating essays written by their own students for class practice, not exams, with no imposed rating/assessment scheme. It draws on writing assessment process research literature, although, apart from Huot (1993) and Wolfe et al. (1998), most work has been done on scoring writing in exam conditions using a set scoring rubric, where all raters rate the same essays. Eight research questions were answered from data gathered from six teachers, with a wide range of relevant training, but all teaching university pre-sessional or equivalent classes. Instruments used were general interviews, think aloud reports while rating their own students' essays, and follow up immediate retrospective interviews. Extensive qualitative coding was undertaken using NVivo. It was found that the teachers did not vary much in the core features that they claimed to recognise in general as typical of ‘good writing’, but varied more in what criteria they highlighted in practice when rating essays, though all used a form of analytic rating. Two thirds of the separate criteria coded were used by all the teachers but there were differences in preference for higher versus lower level criteria. Teachers also differed a great deal in the scales they used to sum up their evaluations, ranging from IELTS scores to just evaluative adjectives, and most claimed to use personal criteria, with concern for the consequential pedagogical value of their rating for the students more than achieving a test-like reliable score. A wide range of information sources was used to support and justify the rating decisions made, beyond the essay text, including background information about the writer and classmates, and teacher prior instruction. Teacher comments also evidenced concern with issues arguably not central to rating itself but rather exploring implications for the teacher and writer. Similar to Cumming et al. (2002), three broad stages of the rating process were identified: reading and exploiting information such as the writer’s name and the task prompt as well as perhaps skimming the text; reading and rereading parts of the essay, associated with interpretation and judgment; achievement of a summary judgment. In detail, however, each teacher had their own individual style of reading and of choice and use of criteria.

▼ In a context of precariousness of Modern Foreign Languages and promotion of e-learning at national level, often referred to as “technology-enhanced learning”, the targeted institution, a “new” university in the United Kingdom, offers an Institution-Wide Language Programme where language classes are presented as a blended learning package of face-to-face classes coupled with the use of the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Operating within a hermeneutical phenomenological approach and constructionist epistemological principles, this thesis seeks to investigate the students’ experience of a VLE among beginners and post-beginners of French and in particular whether their level (beginners or post-beginners), status (undergraduates, post-graduates or external students) or the lecturers in charge of the various groups for the face-to-face component of the module, have any significance on their experience. At a time when the students’ feedback and the quality of their learning experience are considered with care by institutions of Higher Education, this thesis contributes to an enhanced knowledge of the students’ experience in connection with a VLE, obtained through a mixed-method approach based on the completion of 96 questionnaires and six follow-up interviews, in association with socio-constructivist principles. This research differentiates itself by being conducted specifically about students’ experience of the institutional VLE in a context of blended learning, with students based primarily on site, and study of languages. Although they may be considered as digitally literate, students’ response regarding their own experiences indicates that digital skills do not appear as readily transferable to formal learning contexts. Therefore, lecturers need to guide students in a structured and progressive manner in order to maximise their engagement with the VLE. In addition, it contributes further to knowledge by highlighting implications for pedagogical practices.

▼ This study investigates in-service teacher education and training (INSET) practices in Qatar, and employs action research (AR) as an investigative methodology. It is an attempt to improve the researcher's practice as a teacher trainer by exploring the local INSET setting and investigating an interventionist training programme. It had its origins in personal observation that local INSET is struggling to provide effective learning opportunities to teachers who generally engage in the minimal required INSET. This study was conducted over a five-year period in three stages, with three different cohorts of in-service teachers of English language teaching (ELT). The three stages were needs analysis, implementation and reflection. The needs analysis stage aimed at gathering context information to inform the INSET design and delivery in the succeeding stages. The implementation stage consisted of three AR cycles. In the first cycle, the three-month INSET delivery involved 12 sessions, comprising 48 hours of face-to-face training. The second cycle involved around 25 INSET events for over one and a half months. In the third cycle, each of the three sessions and a demo lesson was delivered every other two weeks to allow for training input implementation and online collective discussion by trainees. The quantitative and qualitative data were collected by means of multiple methods. Quantitative data were statistically analysed while qualitative data were thematically analysed. The findings of the study provided insights on the teachers' attitudes towards INSET, main challenges, perceived success factors, preferred training themes, engagement, and trainer role. This study contributes to understandings of INSET in the Qatari context. It was conducted at a time of major reforms where INSET is seen as one of the main tools to address policy makers' concerns about the educational system. Albeit, minimal academic research has been conducted on the effectiveness of the teacher training programmes offered to TESOL practitioners in Qatar. The findings provide ways to improve INSET, shed light on how the role of a trainer can contribute to its success, explain why teachers in Qatar may not be motivated to take part in INSET, and propose a framework for INSET design and delivery in the Qatari and other ELT contexts.

▼ Actinobacteria, especially those of genus Streptomyces, are a prominent source of bioactive natural products. The ability to site-specifically incorporate unnatural amino acids (UAAs) into natural product biosynthetic enzymes and ribosomally derived peptides in these organisms would constitute a valuable tool for drug discovery and development. The work described in this dissertation focuses on development and application of an expanded Streptomyces genetic code, including development of UAA incorporation systems based on amber suppression and sense codon reassignment, structural diversification of the model thiopeptide natural product thiostrepton using UAAs, and mapping protein-protein interactions in type II polyketide biosynthetic enzymes using photocrosslinking UAAs. First, we developed an amber suppression-based system of site-specific incorporation of p-iodo-L-phenylalanine (pIPhe) and p-azido-L-phenylalanine (pAzPhe) into superfolder GFP (sfGFP) in the model natural product producer Streptomyces venezuelae ATCC 15439. Next, the rare leucine codon TTA was reassigned to encode pIPhe and p-benzoyl-L-phenylalanine (pBpa) in S. coelicolor J1681 (ΔbldA), in which the unique tRNA^Leu_UAA (bldA) that recognizes the TTA codon was deleted. In the S. venezuelae ΔbldA strain, we achieved 20-fold higher yields of UAA containing protein using the TTA reassignment system compared to the amber suppression-based system; and were able to incorporate up to 10 scattered or 5 tandem UAAs in a single protein using TTA reassignment. Finally, we have carried out preliminary work on two applications. In the first, we constructed and tested functionality of a system designed to incorporate pAzPhe into the actinorhodin ketosynthase β (KSβ) in S. coelicolor J1681 to interrogate protein-protein interactions in actinorhodin biosynthesis. In the second, we have begun developing a system for incorporation of UAAs into thiostrepton in the native producer Streptomyces laurentii ATCC 31255. Preliminary results confirm the functionality of amber suppression system in S. laurentii; and demonstrated development of a TipA-based fluorescent biosensor for detecting thiopeptide antibiotics in S. venezuelae. Work on these two applications has laid the foundation for development of tools to structurally diversify the ribosomally synthesized peptides and to address questions related to natural product biosynthesis and mechanism of action that are relevant to drug discovery and development. ▼ Background: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine on lung ischaemia reperfusion injury. Methods: Nineteen pigs were used. Group I (n = 5) underwent sham operation, group II (n = 7) 90-min left-lung ischaemia followed by 180-min reperfusion. In group III (n = 7) N-acetyl-L-cysteine was given (160 mg/kg) during ischaemia into the pulmonary artery. Lung-functional and haemodynamic parameters were measured; serum and lung tissue samples were obtained and analysed for interleukin-10 and tumour necrosis factor-a. At the end of the reperfusion bronchoalveolar lavage was carried out from the ipsilateral lung and analysis for total protein, phospholipase-A2 and platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase was carried out. Histological specimens were graded (0-3) for alveolar oedema, interstitial thickening and leucocyte infiltration. Statistical analysis was by means of one-way analysis of variance and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: There were no differences in haemodynamic parameters, serum and tissue interleukin-10 and tissue necrosis factor-a. Pulmonary compliance was decreased in groups II and III (P = 0.002 and P = 0.001, respectively) during ischaemia and reperfusion. Pulmonary vascular resistance was increased in group II (P = 0.051) during reperfusion. In group III total protein and platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase were increased (P = 0.004 and P = 0.006, respectively) and phospholipase-A2 was reduced (P = 0.002), indicating an indirect surfactant-protective effect. Interstitial thickening was excessive in group II (P = 0.001); however, alveolar oedema was reduced (P = 0.002) when compared with group III. Conclusion: N-acetyl-L-cysteine when administered directly in the pulmonary artery showed no significant change in haemodynamic and functional lung parameters during ischaemia reperfusion; it does, however, have an indirect surfactant-protective effect. p>Η μεταμόσχευση του πνεύμονα είναι πλέον µια ευρείας αποδοχής μέθοδος αντιμετώπισης ασθενών µε πνευµονική νόσο τελικού σταδίου Η πρώιµη δυσλειτουργία του μοσχεύματος αποτελεί µία από τις κυριότερες αιτίες νοσηρότητας και θνητότητας. H βλάβη εξ επαναιµατώσεως φαίνεται να είναι ο κυριότερος αιτιολογικός µηχανισµός. Η ακριβής παθογένεια του συνδρόµου ισχαιµίας - επαναιµάτωσης στις πνευµονικές µεταµοσχεύσεις δεν είναι πλήρως εξακριβωµένη. Τα ως τώρα εφαρµοζόµενα πειραµατικά πρωτόκολλα φαίνεται ότι δεν µπορούν να αναπαράγουν την πλήρη κλινική εικόνα του συνδρόµου ισχαιµίας επαναιµάτωσης, όπως είναι η υποξία, η σοβαρή βλάβη του ενδοθηλίου των πνευµονικών αγγείων, η αύξηση της τριχοειδικής διαπερατότητας και το εκσεσηµασµένο κυψελιδικό οίδηµα. Η επιτυχημένη µεταµόσχευση πνεύμονα προϋποθέτει βέλτιστη προστασία και διατήρηση του µοσχεύµατος. ▼ IntroduÃÃo e objetivos: Os neutrÃfilos desempenham importante papel na pancreatite aguda grave. InfiltraÃÃo de neutrÃfilos no pÃncreas Ã um processo complexo, coordenado por molÃculas de adesÃo especÃficas, tais como a P-selectina. Fucoidina Ã um polissacarÃdeo sulfatado que bloqueia a funÃÃo da L-e P-selectinas. No presente estudo avaliamos se o tratamento com fucoidina poderia impedir a infiltraÃÃo de neutrÃfilos e, assim, reverter a inflamaÃÃo sistÃmica e dismotilidades gastrintestinais associadas Ã pancreatite aguda grave. MÃtodos: A pancreatite aguda foi induzida em camundongos Swiss pela infusÃo retrÃgrada de Ãcido taurolitocÃlico (3,0%) (TLC-S) no ducto pancreÃtico ou por injeÃÃes intraperitoneais de ceruleÃna (50 Âg/kg/h). Os grupos experimentais receberam fucoidina (25 mg/kg, iv) antes da induÃÃo da pancreatite, e os grupos de controle receberam apenas soluÃÃo salina. ApÃs 24 horas, os nÃveis sÃricos de amilase, lipase, IL-1β, TNF-α, nitrito e de malondialdeÃdo (MDA) pancreÃtico foram medidos. AlÃm disso, a atividade de mieloperoxidase (MPO) (pulmÃo, pÃncreas, estÃmago e jejuno) e avaliaÃÃo histolÃgica (pÃncreas) foram determinadas. O esvaziamento gÃstrico e trÃnsito gastrintestinal foram medidos pelo mÃtodo de centro geomÃtrico. A contratilidade gastrintestinal in vitro foi registrada atravÃs de transdutores de forÃa conectados a sistema computadorizado de aquisiÃÃo de dados. Carbacol (0,01 ÂM - 30 ÂM), KCl 60 mM e estimulaÃÃo elÃctrica (0,5-8,0 Hz; 1ms, 40 V), foram aplicados sobre o fundo gÃstrico e jejuno dos animais 24 horas apÃs a pancreatite induzida por TLC-S. Resultados: Os nÃveis de MDA pancreÃtico, amilase, lipase, nitrito, TNF-α e IL-1β sÃricos, bem como MPO pancreÃtica e pulmonar estavam aumentados tanto no modelo de pancreatite aguda induzida por TLCS quanto no modelo ceruleÃna quando comparado aos grupos controle correspondentes. Fucoidina reduziu significativamente os nÃveis aumentados de amilase, lipase, MPO pancreÃtica e pulmonar, MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β e nitrito em ambos os modelos de pancreatite aguda. As mudanÃas histolÃgicas observadas no pÃncreas em ambos os modelos foram significativamente atenuadas pela fucoidina. O modelo de pancreatite aguda induzida por TLC-S induziu retardo no esvaziamento gÃstrico e trÃnsito gastrointestinal, aumento de MPO no estÃmago e no jejuno, alÃm de hipercontratilidade de jejuno in vitro. Fucoidina reverteu significativamente os distÃrbios gastrintestinais in vivo e in vitro e os nÃveis aumentados de MPO gÃstrica e jejunal induzidos pela injeÃÃo de TLC-S. ▼ We investigate the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function that interpolates the central value of the Rankin-Selberg L-function L(f¿¿,s), where f is a fixed classical modular form and ¿ a Hecke character of an imaginary quadratic field varying in an anticyclotomic family. Such p-adic L-functions were first constructed by Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna using toric integrals. We give an alternative construction using Ichino's triple-product formula, applied to a fixed modular form and a pair of CM forms. Using two CM forms gives us flexibility to obtain precise results in cases that are difficult to analyze from other constructions, such as when the family of Hecke characters leads to residually reducible Galois representations after induction. In particular our results and techniques apply to the family passing through the trivial character, and thus are suited for future arithmetic applications towards elliptic curves. The first step of the computation is to make Ichino's formula completely explicit in a classical context, resulting in an equation relating a classical Petersson inner product to a product of two Rankin-Selberg L-values. To work out the constant exactly, we need to evaluate certain local integrals at finite places that arise from Ichino's formula. To handle these, we collect various results and techniques from the literature and make some computations ourselves. Once we have an explicit equation, we simultaneously vary the two CM forms in Hida families. By combining some Hida theory with the Main Conjecture of Iwasawa Theory for imaginary quadratic fields (a theorem of Rubin) we show that the Petersson inner products on one side of our equation vary p-adically analytically. From this we conclude that the L-values we're interested in vary p-adically, and moreover obtain a formula relating the p-adic family interpolating Petersson inner products to a product of our p-adic L-function and a fixed L-value. Abstract In order to gain better understanding on the impacts of sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent on marine environment, the present study was undertaken to investigate the structure of benthic community and protein expression patterns of 4 benthic species in STP effluent areas in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Six sites were selected, 3 near Jhong Jhou STP, 2 near NSYSU STP and one reference site. Samples were collected in December 2009 (winter) and July 2010 (summer) by bottom trawling. In winter, temperature was 26.8 °C; salinity and pH were 32. 2‰ and 8.1. In summer, environmental data were 33.7 °C, 31.5‰ and 8.0, respectively. In all, 5 phyla, 31 families and 48 different species were captured in two seasons. Proteomic approach by one-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1D SDS-PAGE) was conducted on 3 fishes, Leiognathus splendens, Apogon fasciatus, Engyprosopon multisquama, and one crab Portunus hastatoides. Environment characteristics and structure of benthic community had no significant difference among the 6 sampling sites. Protein expression patterns based on the four examined species also indicated no significant difference among sites. The complexity of pollutants in Kaohsiung Harbor is probably the main reason affecting all sampling sites. In other words, contaminated area in Kaohsiung Harbor may cover a wide range, at least III over the present sampling distance, i.e. 8km which causes no difference in community structure and protein expression pattern among control, Jhong Jhou STP and NSYSU STP sites. ▼ There is no doubt that feedback plays an indispensable role in both the teaching and the learning of writing skills, especially when it comes to a second or foreign language. However, despite substantial research showing the effectiveness of feedback, some teachers do not use the feedback technique to help their students improve on their writing. This study has grown out of interest during teaching practice at university level in Libya. It is common practice in Libya for teachers of English writing not to provide their students with either written or oral feedback on their written work. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of face to face feedback on second language writing in the Libyan higher education context. To fulfil the mentioned intention, a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies was employed. The study assessed face-to-face feedback by assessing whether and the extent to which this feedback technique led to an improvement in writing skills as measured by students’ performance in writing before and after the course in which this technique was employed. In addition, an examination was conducted of both students’ and writing teachers’ attitudes towards face-to-face feedback. This was in order to investigate their attitudes towards the use of face-to-face feedback in learning writing as well as to explore the advantages and disadvantages of this method. The participants of the study consisted of 200 third year undergraduate students who were studying in the English Department in two Libyan universities in the academic year 2012-2013. The students were randomly allocated either to a control or to an experimental group. The experimental group was given the treatment, which is face-to-face feedback (also known as conferencing feedback) whereas; the control group received written feedback. The study found a statistically noteworthy difference in students’ performance between the control and experimental groups. In other words, students who engaged in face-to-face feedback improved their test scores more than those who received only written feedback. This difference in revised writing performance between the treatment group and the control group is attributed to the use of learning strategies for writing and engagement with the learning. These findings suggest that face-to-face feedback allows writing skills to develop faster and more smoothly than does written feedback. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten of the participant students (the treatment group) from only Tripoli University along with their writing teacher to look into their attitudes and perceptions about feedback in general, as well as their opinion on face-to-face feedback in particular. Observation was also carried out on the treatment group in the classroom, with several objectives in mind: to explore how students learn, to see if they engage in face-to-face feedback, and to confirm what they had said in the interviews. ▼ Iwasawa theory is a powerful tool which describes the mysterious relationship between arithmetic objects (motives) and the special values of L-functions. A precise form of this relationship is neatly encoded in the so-called "Iwasawa Main Conjecture". Classically the Main Conjecture (as formulated by Iwasawa himself) involved the behaviour of ideal class groups over cyclotomic Zp-extensions, and related this to the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic zeta-function. During the last two decades, the main conjecture has been greatly generalized to admissible p-adic Lie extensions, and provides a conjectural relationship between L-values of motives and their associated Selmer groups. A key component of the “Non-commutative Iwasawa Main Conjecture” in [CFK+05] predicts the existence of an analytic p-adic L-function L an M inside K1 ( Zp[[G∞]]S∗ ) . To establish the existence of such an object, we need to be able to do two things: (1) describe K1 ( Zp[[G∞]]S∗ ) in terms of the Artin representations factoring through G∞ using p-adic congruences, and then (2) show for each motive that the abelian fragments satisfy these congruences. This thesis provides a complete answer to the first task (1), in the specific situation where the pro-p-group G∞ has dimension ≤ 3 and is torsion-free. We completely describe K1(Zp[[G∞]]) and its localisations by using an infinite family of p-adic congruences, where G∞ is any solvable p-adic Lie group of dimension 3. This builds on earlier work of Kato when dim(G∞) = 2, and of Daniel Delbourgo and Lloyd Peters when G∞ ∼= Z × p ⋉Zd p with a scalar action of Z × p . The method exploits the classification of 3-dimensional p-adic Lie groups due to González-Sánchez and Klopsch, as well as the fundamental ideas of Kakde, Burns, etc. in non-commutative Iwasawa theory. We also undertake a short study of elliptic curves over GL2(Fp)-extensions, and compile some numerical evidence in support of the first layer congruences predicted by Kakde [Kak17] for non-CM curves. However, despite substantial research showing the effectiveness of feedback, some teachers do not use the feedback technique to help their students improve on their writing. This study has grown out of interest during teaching practice at university level in Libya. It is common practice in Libya for teachers of English writing not to provide their students with either written or oral feedback on their written work. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of face to face feedback on second language writing in the Libyan higher education context. To fulfil the mentioned intention, a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies was employed. The study assessed face-to-face feedback by assessing whether and the extent to which this feedback technique led to an improvement in writing skills as measured by students’ performance in writing before and after the course in which this technique was employed. In addition, an examination was conducted of both students’ and writing teachers’ attitudes towards face-to-face feedback. This was in order to investigate their attitudes towards the use of face-to-face feedback in learning writing as well as to explore the advantages and disadvantages of this method. The participants of the study consisted of 200 third year undergraduate students who were studying in the English Department in two Libyan universities in the academic year 2012-2013. The students were randomly allocated either to a control or to an experimental group. The experimental group was given the treatment, which is face-to-face feedback (also known as conferencing feedback) whereas; the control group received written feedback. The study found a statistically noteworthy difference in students’ performance between the control and experimental groups. In other words, students who engaged in face-to-face feedback improved their test scores more than those who received only written feedback. This difference in revised writing performance between the treatment group and the control group is attributed to the use of learning strategies for writing and engagement with the learning. These findings suggest that face-to-face feedback allows writing skills to develop faster and more smoothly than does written feedback. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten of the participant students (the treatment group) from only Tripoli University along with their writing teacher to look into their attitudes and perceptions about feedback in general, as well as their opinion on face-to-face feedback in particular. Observation was also carried out on the treatment group in the classroom, with several objectives in mind: to explore how students learn, to see if they engage in face-to-face feedback, and to confirm what they had said in the interviews.
