▼ Direct Injection (DI) has been known for its improved performance and efficiency in gasoline spark-ignition engines. In order to take all the advantages of the GDI technology, it is important to investigate in detail the interactions of fuel spray and combustion system, such as air-fuel mixing, in-cylinder flow development, surface wetting, and turbulence intensity. The characterizations of the internal nozzle flow of DI injector are first studied using the multidimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation. In the meanwhile the numerical and experimental studies are carried out to observe the external spray and wall impingements in an optical constant volume vessel. The fuel film deposit characteristics were derived using the Refractive Index Matching (RIM) technique. Finally, the interactions of sprays with the charge motion are investigated in an optical accessible engine using CFD simulation and high-speed imaging of sprays inside engines.
The numerical results DI injector nozzle show that the complicated unsteady flow features dominate the near-nozzle breakup mechanisms which are quite unlike those of diesel. The spray impingement, wetted area, fuel film thickness, and the resultant footprint mass were investigated experimentally. The CFD simulation with selected models of spray validated first for its transport in the air is used to compare the impingement models with the experimental measurements. The spray cone, tip penetration and fuel film shapes were in very good agreement. The effects of spray patterns, injection timing and flexible valve-train on the bulk flow motion and fuel-air mixing in an optical accessible engine, in terms of tumble and swirl ratios, turbulence level, and fuel wall film behaviors are discussed. Using integral analyses of the simulation results, the mechanisms in reducing fuel consumption and emissions in a variable valve-actuation engine, fueled by side-mounted multi-hole DI injectors are illustrated. The implications to the engine mixing and the resultant combustion in a metal engine are also demonstrated.

▼ This thesis presents the development of a novel hybrid pneumatic-electric actuator which combines the advantages of both pneumatic and electrical actuator. The hybrid actuator consists of a pneumatic cylinder and a DC motor. They are connected in parallel using gears. The components are sized to provide the torque required to rotate a single-link robot arm vertically upwards. On/off solenoid valves are used rather than servo valves to keep the hardware cost low. A mathematical model of the nonlinear actuator dynamics is derived using a combination of physical laws and empirical curve fitting. The dynamics of the mechanical, electrical and pneumatic elements are included. Then a novel discrete-valued model-predictive control plus integral compensator algorithm is created for controlling the position of the pneumatic cylinder using the on/off valves. The control algorithm for the hybrid actuator is completed by using a conventional PD algorithm to control the electric motor. Experiments shows the hybrid actuator outperform pneumatic actuator in every aspect. Conversely, the DC motor added a faster acting and finer quantized force to the pneumatic cylinder force, which greatly improved the dynamic position control performance of the hybrid actuator. In experiments, the mean root-mean-square error and the maximum absolute error improved by 84% and 77%, respectively.

▼ The decreasing oil supply, more stringent pollutant
legislations and strong focus on decreasing carbon dioxide
emissions drives the research of more efficient and clean
combustion engines. One such combustion engine concept is
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) which potentially
achieves high efficiency and low NOx and soot emissions. One
practical realization of HCCI in SI engines is to use a variable
valve train to trap hot residual gases in order to increase the
temperature of the fresh charge to auto-ignite around top dead
center. The limited operating region of HCCI and lack of immediate
control actuator, which makes feedback control of the combustion
difficult, are two contributing reasons to change focus from HCCI
to gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC). The advantage with
using gasoline is a longer ignition delay which enhances the mixing
of the fuel and air before combustion. But the attainable operating
region is limited at low load with high octane number fuels and the
main part of the thesis is devoted to extending the low load limit
of gasoline PPC. The goal is to extend the operating region of the
engine towards low load using the variable valve train system, the
glow plug and more advanced injection strategies. The thesis is
based on experimental investigations performed in a single cylinder
research engine. During the first part of the thesis, results from
a fundamental experimental study on HCCI combustion in comparison
with SI combustion using different variable valve timing strategies
is presented. Residual gas enhanced HCCI with negative valve
overlap (NVO) or rebreathing has higher efficiency compared to SI
combustion. To extend the operating range of the NVO HCCI engine, a
combustion mode switch from SI combustion to HCCI combustion using
NVO, was investigated. In the first gasoline PPC investigation, a
comparison between diesel and two gasoline fuels with different
octane numbers was performed. It is shown that the low octane
number gasoline (69 RON) can be operated without using a high
fraction of trapped hot residual gas down to 1 bar IMEPn. But the
operating range of the 87 RON gasoline fuel was limited and could
be run down to approximately 2 bar IMEPn using a high fraction of
trapped hot residual gas. The rest of the gasoline PPC work is
devoted to the 87 RON gasoline fuel. Experimental investigations on
the effects of the hot residual gas using NVO and rebreathing, more
advanced fuel injection strategies and effects of the glow plug are
presented. In order to minimize fuel consumption while maintaining
combustion stability, the suggested gasoline PPC low load operating
strategy is to use the NVO valve strategy with a fuel injection
during NVO at low engine load up to approximately 2 bar IMEPn and
then switch to the rebreathing valve strategy using a split main
fuel injection strategy at higher engine load.

▼ This study involves the cold start testing of ULSD and JP8 fuels on the 6 cylinder 7.2 liter turbocharged diesel engine at various ambient temperatures as low as 0oF for JP8 fuel and 10oF for ULSD fuel. Cycle by cycle analysis of the cold start transient data, along with the effects of variation in ambient temperature on the engine cranking speed and in cylinder motoring pressure were analyzed and presented. It was found that the reduction in ambient temperature resulted in prolonged cranking periods along with the longer time taken to reach idling speed as well as increased combustion instability. This phenomenon was observed for both ULSD and JP8 fuels at low ambient temperatures.
The engine ECU fueling strategy was studied at ambient temperatures as low as 0oF and found to be inadequate to result in prompt engine start. Several challenges with the engine controller such as fuel injection cut off, out of phase injection signal between the ECU and the fuel line pressure buildup were also identified

▼ In this dissertation, the concept of hidden genes genetic algorithms is developed. In system architecture optimization problems, the topology of the solution is unknown and hence, the number of design variables is variable. Hidden genes genetic algorithms are genetic algorithm based methods that are developed to handle such problems by hiding some genes in the chromosomes. The genes in the hidden genes genetic algorithms evolve through selection, mutation, and crossover operations. To determine if a gene is hidden or not, binary tags are assigned to them. The value of the tags determine the status of the genes. Different mechanisms are proposed for the evolution of the tags. Some mechanisms utilize stochastic operations while others are based on deterministic operations. All the proposed mechanisms are tested on mathematical and space trajectory optimization problems. Moreover, Markov chain models of the mechanisms are derived and their convergence is investigated analytically. The results show that the proposed concept are capable to search for the optimal solution by autonomously enabling the algorithms to assign the hidden genes.

▼ In order to meet the demanding legislations on diesel engines exhaust emissions, an always more accurate control over the amount of fuel injected in the cylinders is required. A comprehensive understanding of the main factors involved in the injection process, therefore, should be achieved. Such factors are the pressure in the common rail, the injection ontime and the temperature at the injector. The rail pressure, in particular, has been the focus of this project: Its accurate acquisition is crucial for the correct determination of the injection duration and, consequently, for an improved control over the amount of fuel injected. The rail pressure, however, is characterized by significant instabilities affecting the measurement. An experimental campaign has been conducted on a Scania D13 engine in order to characterize and understand the rail pressure signature during engine steady operations: The superposition of injections, pump strokes and water-hammer instabilities forms a complex pattern extensively discussed. An attempt to model the pressure fast transients has been made: While the frequency content of the phenomenon investigated is correctly interpreted, the results obtained in the time domain diverge significantly in amplitude and phase from the experimental data collected. Finally, the measurement strategy adopted today at Scania CV AB to acquire the rail pressure has been investigated and its accuracy assessed. On the basis of the knowledge achieved, a new adaptive measurement technique, capable of changing the estimation process accordingly to the engine operating condition detected, is proposed. The potentiality of an increased accuracy in controlling the amount of fuel injected is proved for engine steady operations. Further investigation regarding the method tolerance to engine transients, however, is required.

▼ The transport industry needs to change. Since the start of industrialism, fossil emissions from vehicles and transport have increased exponentially. Emissions affect both humans, animals and nature. This need to be reduced to stop global warming.This report presents a solution for the transport industry that enables completely environmentally neutral transport and fuel – hydrogen and fuel cells.The project team has examined technical parts of the fuel cell industry to determine how to create such an efficient fuel cell system as possible. The goal of the project is to carry out sustainable integration of fuel cells in a vehicle product that uses batteries as primary energy storage. Today’s consumption and use of lithium-ion batteries will pose future challenges, the group therefore wants to develop a proactive product that results in an extended lifespan and creates benefits by combining two technologies. The report handles the entire development process from idea to finished product with a final part before a market introduction.This result has become a prototype vehicle that is ready for hydrogen operation. An implementation plan has also been developed for how to implement fuel cells and hydrogen in an existing or future electric vehicle. The result is thus a comprehensive solution for how to transition to fully sustainable transport.With a concrete result and sustainable development in focus, the project team has created a product that will show leadership and inspire the transport industry to change and transform towards hydrogen gas energy.

▼ The world of transport solutions is changing. Scania CV AB (Scania) is trying to drive the shift towards a more sustainable future. One implemented strategy has been to work with gas vehicles, trucks and buses Scania sell trucks that is operating on liquified gas. The fuel is liquified at minus 158 degrees Celsius and the density is between 430-478 Kg/m3 [1]. To determine which tank interface that would be preferable to used in Scania vehicles this master of science thesis was initiated. The scope of the project included both a theoretical as well as a practical methodology to incorporate in the product development process. The stakeholders considered are divided into three groups, production, service and users. The improvement is clear when examining each stakeholder needs where the biggest difference is for production.

▼ This thesis involves the process of designing a wagon for the company Majgården AB, a company working with bakery production. The used method follows mostly Fredy Olsson´s (1995) work process using Principle Design as well as Primary Design in order to design a final concept. Initially, in the beginning of the thesis, it was analyzed how the product will be used and in what kind of environment. The analysis allowed a definition of requirements that the product needs to fulfill. Next step included extracting different product sketches that could be used as possible solutions. The solutions were compared against the requirements and a final, optimal concept was chosen to continue the work with. The final sketch was then further improved. The design of the final concept was then fully finalized with help of a 3D program.

▼ IoT- technology, Internet of Things, is a fast-growing business, it means that more and more products, clothes, even people are provided with sensors that can communicate and perceive the surroundings to create a smarter community. For companies to keep up to date, it is essential to continuously provide products with better components and reduced size. To stand out further, companies should provide revolutionary products, with totally new feature. One of these ideas, of a new kind of product with special features, have been investigated and developed in this thesis. The thesis has been conducted with the company CombiQ, located in Jönköping, Sweden. The product that was going to be developed was an industrial sensor, that uses the technology of IIoT, Industrial Internet of Things, that the company develops. At the time when this project took place, CombiQ did not sell any own product, only the technology that was placed inside the products. To develop the industrial sensor for CombiQ, not only the functions of the product had to be investigated, further the brand had to be analyzed to create a design expression reflecting the company. Through implement several tools and methods, from among other things the product development process and design thinking, a concept of an industrial sensor is presented that fulfill the specific requirements and functions. Where the main-feature is that the sensor should be a modular solution to be adjusted for the specific need of the clients. Furthermore, during the project a visual brand language with design guidelines have been developed to reflect the design aspects of the company CombiQ. Design guidelines can be used for further product for the company in the same manners, which also has been displayed by developing design concept of the rest of the industrial sensor that counts to the same product family as the modular sensor.
IoT-teknologi, Internet of Things, är en snabbt växande marknad, det innebär att mer och mer produkter, kläder, även människor förses med sensorer som i sin tur kan förstå omgivningen och kommunicera, detta för att skapa ett smartare samhälle. För att företag ska kunna vidhålla positionen på marknaden är det viktigt att hela tiden erbjuda produkter med bättre komponenter och mindre till storleken. För skapa en starkare position, företaget borde erbjuda revolutionerande produkter med unika egenskaper. Det är en av de här idéerna som har undersökts i det här examensarbetet. Arbetet har skett under ett samarbete med företaget CombiQ, belägen i Jönköping. Produkten som skulle tas fram var en industriell sensor, som skulle använda sig av IIoT-teknologin, Industrial Internet of Things, som företaget utvecklar. ▼ Denna rapport kommer att avhandla det examensarbete som genomförts inom CAD-Teknikerprogrammet på Högskolan i Halmstad. Arbetet har genomförts på Maltes Fuel & Wash AB och startade 24:e mars 2017 med slutpresentation den 23:e maj 2017. Malte Fuel & Wash AB är ett företag baserat i Halmstad och tillverkar bland annat portabla bränslestationer till oljeindustrin samt bilindustrin. Den produkt som detta projekt kretsas runt är deras nyaste version av en minitank som rymmer ca 57m3 bränsle som är en lite större variant av deras nuvarande portabla bränslestationer. Uppdraget från Maltes Fuel & Wash Ab var att optimera stålchassit så de väger så lite som möjligt men ska klara transporten utan några skador samt deformationer i materialet. Då det är en portabel konstruktion så måste man räkna med att den ska kunna lyftas med kran och transporteras på lastbilar då ett problem som kan uppstå är böjningar i balkarna då de är 12m långa och blir belastade ca 18 ton av resten av konstruktionen. För att lösa dessa problem så har uppdraget uppdelats i olika delmoment som ska lösas på olika sätt. Det har tagits fram olika 3D koncept och optimeringsberäkningar samt FEM analyser med hjälp av Catia v5. Dessa koncept har utvärderats så att de uppfyller Maltes Fuel & Wash AB’s krav och önskemål.

▼ Examensarbetet har utförts på uppdrag av Autofric AB i samarbete med Nordic Water som avslutning på högskoleingenjörsprogrammet inom Maskinteknik på Karlstad Universitet under våren 2017. Arbetet behandlar konstruktion av en skruvtransportör som är avsedd att användas i vattenreningsverk. Nordic Water konstruerar och säljer idag skruvtransportörer under serienamnet XC. För att kunna utöka sitt utbud för kunder vill de nu konstruera en skruvtransportör i diameterstorlek 500 mm, XC500. Under konstruktionsarbetet har kraftanalyser utförts för att förstå vilka krafter som angriper drivenheten på skruvtransportören. Vidare har hållfasthetsberäkningar utförts på de kritiska delar hos drivenheten för att kunna dimensionera dessa delar korrekt. Finita elementmetoden har tillämpats på de delar hos drivenheten med komplicerade geometrier och randvillkor. Vid konstruktion av komponenter som finns i olika varianter har familjetabeller använts vid modellering. På så sätt kan Nordic Water snabbt ta fram 3D-modeller i olika dimensioner vid framtida konstruktionsarbete. Ett pneumatisktteleskoputkast har analyserats och modellerats. En viktanalys utfördes tillsammans med statikberäkningar för att kunna bestämma om tänkta lyftkolvar skulle klara dimensionsökningen XC500 transportören medför. Målet att konstruera enklare komponenter samt analysera drivenheten har uppfyllts med gott resultat. Ritningsunderlag har tagits fram för över 50 komponenter och drivenheten har dimensionerats för att klara beräknad belastning. Målet att konstruera benkonstruktionen hann inte uppfyllas på grund av bristande tidsrymd.

▼ Följande examensarbetes rapport handlar om utveckla konstruktion, modellering samt ner skalning av ett projekt, glasögon upphittaren. Arbetet som rapporten bygger på är utfört i samarbete med uppdragsgivaren Birger Klasson. Projektet innefattar utvecklingen av ett gammalt projekt som gjorts på högskolan innan som handlar om glasögon upphittare, deras grupp fokuserade på teknologin som användes för att mota signaler. Skälet bakom utvecklingen är att skala ner den gamla prototypen men även modellera en smidigare design för skalet. Genom några möten mellan uppdragsgivaren och författarna har idén kommit fram om att uppdatera chipet med GPS sändare inbyggt med ljud-enheten. De ska kopplas ihop med en mobil enhet genom Bluetooth-signaler. Flera olika lösningsförslag har utarbetats där det till slut uppenbarats två olika koncept på lösningar. De två lösningarna har vägts upp mot varandra utifrån metoden från principkonstruktionen. Resultatet av dessa bedömningar blev ett förslag där skalet komprimeras till chipets storlek för smidigare grepp runt bågarna, samt att den inte tar lika mycket utrymme. Prototypen visade sig vara lyckad, onstruktionens dimension är hälften jämfört med den ursprungliga prototypen. Produkten har en ny smalare design, fäster sig lättare på glasögon samt uppdaterad teknologi i chip och mottagare. De olika metoderna som följdes under arbetets gång kom från tillverknings-, primär-, och principkonstruktions kurserna.

▼ When single armoured cables are under tension they will start to twist in direction depending on the lay angle of the armour wires on the cable. The cables start to twist due to the induced torque that appear within the cable and this induced torque can in the worst-case cause loops and kinks on the cable. These negative consequences are the subject to exploration by implementing a known analytical solution developed by Lanteigne (1985), into an external function in OrcaFlex which is a finite element software program capable of solving 3D non-linear arbitrarily deflections. It is specifically designed to be used for doing static and dynamic analysis on marine and offshore structures. Different cable installation scenarios cases have been created and some of these are validated through experimental testing at the testing facility at ABB, Karlskrona. The results from the different cases shows a good representation of the real twist and rotation of the cable. However, results also conclude that the induced torque that appear within the cable was not possible to be correctly represented by applying external torque from an external function. These results are important for further research within the area and they help creating a greater understanding of torque related problems with single armoured cable under tension.

▼ Ett examensarbete utfört under tredje året på Sportteknologiprogrammet. Ett undersökande arbete för Mittuniversitetet Östersund som berör additiv tillverkning och bearbetningsmetoder. Syftet var att genom litteraturstudie och undersökningar skapa en fungerande modell av blodkärl, samt att öka förståelsen för additiv tillverkning och medicinteknik. Målet var att presentera en fungerande modell av blodkärl som flödes - och tryckmätningar kan utföras på. Arbetet leddes med agil metod och följde de agila faserna, förstudie, planering, genomförande, överlämning och avslut. Förstudien gav svar på vad och varför projektet skulle genomföras. Planeringsmetoderna besvarade hur projektet skulle genomföras. Under planeringsfasen låg fokus på att planera inför de två studierna som skulle genomföras, samt planering inför den slutgiltiga modellen. Studie – Additiv Tillverkning genomfördes med avseende på geometri, rengöringsmetoder samt placering i 3D-skrivaren. Studie – Gjutning genomfördes med avseende på geometri och materialegenskaper. Genomförandet bestod av att dessa tester och undersökningar utfördes. Studie – Additiv Tillverkning gav tydliga resultat som kunde analyseras, resultatet visade att möjligheten att tillverka blodkärl kommer vara möjligt. Resultatet ifrån Studie - Gjutning gav tydliga resultat som kunde analyseras, resultatet visade att det är möjligt att tillverka ett tillräckligt mjukt gummi till slutmodellen. Slutmodellen tillverkades utifrån de tidigare studierna, gummit som användes var det som var lättast att hantera. Slutsatsen är att undersökningarna gav förväntade resultat och att det är möjligt att skapa ett modulärt blodkärlssystem med de metoder som användes. Syftet och målet uppnåddes då en fungerande modell har tillverkats. Fortsatta studier och förbättringar uppmuntras för att göra en mer geometriskt korrekt modell.

▼ På uppdrag av företaget Krabat AS har ett produktutvecklingsarbete för att ta fram ett tillbehör till deras rullstol Krabat Sheriff utförts. Syftet med projektet har varit att utveckla ett tillbehör för att öka rullstolens mobilitet i terräng. Målet med processen har varit att ta fram ett underlag för vidareutveckling av ett av- och påmonterbart tillbehör som ska passa Krabat Sheriff. Detta har genomförts genom att ta fram lösningar med hjälp av marknadsanalys, intressentanalys och teoristudier samt visa olika konfigurationer av de framtagna lösningarna för att slutligen presentera koncept. Arbetet har följt Krabats egen produktutvecklingsprocess, P-08, som inkluderar faserna idé, marknadsundersökning, kravspecifikation, koncept, produktspecifikation, detaljkonstruktion och granskning. I idéfasen gjordes en marknadsanalys samt en intressentanalys för att skapa en överblick av vad kunden och marknaden ville ha. Kravspecifikationen bestod av primärbrukarens krav och önskemål. Den fungerade som en checklista som alla koncept gick igenom för att se om de var realiserbara. I konceptfasen skissades och utvärderades samtliga koncept med hjälp av en beslutsmatris. Beslutsmatrisen valde ut två koncept som vidare utvecklades. Dessa två koncept kombinerades till ett som sedan gick vidare till produktspecifikationen. I produktspecifikationen beskrevs det slutgiltiga konceptet, Krabat Revolvers lösningar i detalj. I detaljkonstruktionen beskrevs Revolvers materialval och tillverkningssätt. Slutligen gjordes en granskande överblick av projektet med hjälp av en feleffektanalys som kontinuerligt byggts på under projektets gång. Sammanfattningsvis ses projektet som lyckat då både syfte och mål har uppnåtts; underlag för en produkt som löser huvudproblemet har tagits fram. Det finns även ett dokumenterat intresse för produkten vilket skapar ett nyhetsvärde för samtliga intressenter.
On behalf of the company Krabat AS a product development case concerning developing an accessory for making their wheelchair, Krabat Sheriff, more usable in terrain has been done. The purpose has been to produce a material for further developing of a detachable accessory made for the Sheriff. The goal has been to present a proposal of solutions obtained by market analysis, stakeholder analysis and theoretical studies as well as showing the possible solutions, showing their optimal configurations and proposing a final concept. The work has been following Krabat AS product development process, P-08, which included the following phases: idea, market research, specifications of requirement, concept, product specifications, details and review. In the idea phase the problem, cause and goal was formulated. In the market research phase a market analysis as well as a stakeholder analysis was done in order to get an idea of what the customer and the market wanted in the product. ▼ På Sandvik Coromant i Gimo genomförs i dagsläget transformationer, vilket medför att verksamheten förbättras. På avdelningen GHMB pressas hårdmetallpulver samman, vilket är första steget i skärtillverkningen. Här har förbättringsmöjligheter identifieras och en av dessa hade syftet att standardisera vågarna i pressmaskinerna. Målet med lösningen är att öka flexibiliteten på maskinerna, underlätta planeringen av produktion samt minska belastningen på konstruktionsavdelningen. Den nya lösningen måste medföra rotationslåsning av vågplatta och vågskål (vilket dagens lösning inte har), och standardiseringen måste generera minst lika bra pressningsresultat som tidigare konstruktion. Projektets avgränsning är att endast fokusera på att standardisera vågarna och arbetet med och kring dem. För att nå fram till projektets mål genomfördes först en förstudie, vilken gav information om vad som skulle genomföras och vilka personer som var viktigast att kommunicera med. Men det som ledde projektet mot målet var metoderna i genomförandefasen. Dessa metoder gav information om viktiga aktiviteter för att projektet skulle komma framåt samt vilka lösningar som var möjliga att genomföra. Här skapades även koncept via målspecifikation, brainstorming och konceptgenerering. När ett slutgiltigt koncept hade identifierats gällde det att ta fram en prototyp för utvärdering. Utvärderingen visade att den framtagna prototypen hade bättre lösningar än den befintliga konstruktionen, och den genererade även bättre och noggrannare vägningsresultat. Av resultatet drogs slutsasen att den framtagna produkten genererade minst lika bra resultat som den befintliga lösningen, men den hade bättre rotationslåsning. Den minskar belastningen på konstruktionsavdelningen, ökar flexibilitet som då också underlättar arbetet för planeringsavdelningen.
At Sandvik Coromant in Gimo, transformations are up on the topic, these transformations mean that the business will improve. At the GHMB6 department, inserts are made from cemented carbide powder, which is the first step in inserts production. At this department opportunities for improvement have been identified, one of them has the purpose to standardize the weight scales in the machines. The goal of the project was to increase the level of flexibility in the machines, make the work easier for the planning department and reduce the encumbrance at the engineering department. A solution for locking the scale plate and scale pin, needed to be found, and the standardization must work at least as good as before. ▼ In the presented thesis work, meshfree method with distance fields is applied to create a novel computational approach which enables inclusion of the realistic geometric models of the microstructure and liberates Finite Element Analysis(FEA) from the dependance on and limitations of meshing of fine microstructural feature such as splats and porosity. Manufacturing processes of ceramics produce materials with complex porosity microstructure.Geometry of pores, their size and location substantially affect macro scale physical properties of the material. Complex structure and geometry of the pores severely limit application of modern Finite Element Analysis methods because they require construction of spatial grids (meshes) that conform to the geometric shape of the structure. As a result, there are virtually no effective tools available for predicting overall
mechanical and thermal properties of porous materials based on their microstructure. This thesis is a separate handling and controls of geometric and physical computational models that are seamlessly combined at solution run time. Using the proposed approach we will determine the effective thermal conductivity tensor of real porous ceramic materials featuring both isotropic and anisotropic thermal properties. This work involved development and implementation of numerical algorithms, data structure, and software.

▼ Detta är ett examensarbete utfört under den sista läsperioden år tre av Sports Tech programmet i Östersund. I arbetet presenteras en studie av vadarbyxor. Syftet med arbetet är att genom fysiska tester undersöka effekten av den funktionalitet avseende ånggenomsläpp, som en membranvadarbyxa påstås besitta. Vadarbyxor och tyger som testats kommer från tillverkaren Guideline som fungerat som sponsor till projektet. Arbetet har utförts efter de agila projektstegen: förstudie, planering, genomförande, överlämnande och avslut men med inslag från den traditionella projektledningen. Arbetets första del består av en textilstudie vars syfte var att undersöka den tekniska funktionaliteten hos tygerna i de olika vadarbyxorna. Denna studie utfördes i Mittuniversitet Östersunds textillaboratorium och innefattar ett vattenpelartest, nötningstest, ånggenomsläppstest samt ett rivtest. Textilstudien följdes av fysiska studier bestående av en promenadstudie på rullband och en fiskestudie i vattentank. I studierna testades vadarbyxor av modellerna Kaitum, Alta samt en galonvadarbyxa. Under dessa studier registrerades luftfuktighet och temperatur på fyra olika ställen på försökspersonen, framsida och baksida lår samt mage och rygg. Förhoppningen med projektet var att de fysiska studierna skulle bekräfta den i textilstudien uppmätta funktionaliteten avseende ånggenomsläpp hos respektive vadarbyxa. Promenadstudien gjorde detta då det gick att se en skillnad i luftfuktighet mellan de olika vadarbyxorna. Katium med bäst resultat från textilstudien var också den minst fuktiga medan galonvadarbyxan utan andningsförmåga var den absolut fuktigaste. Resultatet från fiskestudien i vattentanken var däremot svårare att tolka då galonvadarbyxan var den med lägst uppmätt fuktighet. Detta medan de båda membranbyxorna uppvisade liknande värden. För att kunna dra några säkra slutsatser av de fysiska studierna behöver fler tester göras samt en undersökning av vad datan från testutrustningen verkligen säger och hur den ska tolkas. Slutsatsen är ändå att syftet och målet har uppfyllts då promenadstudien ger indikationer på att membranvadarbyxor faktiskt bidrar till en mindre fuktig och därmed behagligare användarmiljö.

Målet var att se hur yttertyget i en 3-lagers konstruktion kan påverka egenskaperna i tyget samt om dessa egenskaper märks vid fysisk användning. Projektet leddes med agil metod och följde de agila faserna, förstudie, planering, genomförande, överlämning och avslut. Förstudiens metoder gav svar på vad och varför projektet skulle genomföras. Planeringens metoder svarade på hur projektet skulle genomföras. Under planeringen låg huvudfokus på att planera de två olika typerna av tester och försök som har genomförts. Tester i textillaboratorium utfördes enligt ISO-standarder med avseende på genomsläpp av vattenånga, vattentäthet, vattenavvisning och riv styrka. Fysiska tester genomfördes sedan på plagg för att se om de kunde styrka resultaten från textiltesterna. De fysiska testerna var inte beprövade sedan tidigare utan framtagna under projektet och avsåg genomsläpp av vattenånga. Genomförandet bestod av att dessa tester och försök utfördes. Testerna i textillaboratoriet gav pålitliga resultat som kunde analyseras, resultatet visade att strukturen i tyget är viktig för dess egenskaper. Resultaten från vindtunnelförsöken var svårare att analysera då metoden är ny och inte tillräckligt beprövad för att göra djupare analyser av, men slutsatsen är ändå att försöken gav förväntade resultat. Försöken visade att de tygerna som hade bäst genomsläpp i textillaboratoriet även visade detta under vindtunneltesterna. Syftet och målet med projektet uppnåddes då särskiljande egenskaper identifierats. Fortsatta försök under fysisk aktivitet uppmuntras.
A thesis carried out under the third year in the Sports Technology Program. An investigative work for Houdini Sports that treats fabrics with hydrophilic textile membrane. The aim has been to by tests and experiments compare the fabrics with hydrophilic textile membrane. The object is to gain greater insight into how the hydrophilic membranes work and to point out the distinguishing characteristics. The project was led with agile method and followed the agile phases, feasibility study, planning, execution, handover and implementation. Methods feasibility study provided answers to what and why the project should be done. Planning methods responded in how the project would be implemented. According to the planning the main focus was the planning of the two types of tests and experiments that has been implemented. ▼ I den här rapporten går vi igenom processen som vi har använt oss av för att ta fram en konceptmodell för ett nytt magasin åt InLead då de planerar att expandera sitt sortiment för att nå en bredare kundkrets. För tillfället har InLead ett magasin för kutsar och det magasinet vi har fått i projekt att ta fram är ett stångmagasin. I samarbete med vår handledare på InLead har vi gått igenom vad de vill ha i form av funktioner och utseénde. Under projektet använde vi det arbetssätt som är baserat på Freddy Olssons metod, princip och primärkonstruktion (1995), som vi använt oss av i tidigare kurser. Under projektets gång så var vi även på besök i InLeads lokal där vi fick se deras nuvarande magasin samt roboten som de kommer använda sig av för att få en bättre inblick i vad projektet ska bli i sitt slutliga stadie. Vi har lagt ner mycket tid på att få fram de resultat som gav den enklaste lösningen för montering och programmering av roboten. Vi kommer att sätta upp ett poängsystem som baseras på våra krav och önskemmål, där väger vi våra produktförslag och väljer det som passar bäst, vi kommer även göra en POME-Matris. Produkten är uppritad i catia v5 där vi baserade våra idéer på .STEP filer försedda av företaget. Vi använde oss primärt av Part Design och Assembly design då de arbetsbänkarna som används passade vårt projekt bäst. Vi har även använt oss av Catia Photo Studio, Keyshot för att ta fram renderade bilder och animationer av det slutliga resultatet.

▼ Rototilt Group AB is a company in Vindeln outside Umeå Sweden, which develops tiltrotators. They are world leaders in their segment and strives to develop even better products. It includes solving the problems that the customers occasionally encounter. If the torque is too high, the gear can break the thread on the screw that drives the gearwheel, resulting in a damaged product. The purpose of this work was to develop a concept for measurement of forces on the screw. When the torque reaches a certain limit, the driver must be notified so that the operation can be interrupted before a breakdown occurs. A status analysis was made and a compilation of different sensors that could be part of a solution was identified. This was further investigated which led to a few concepts which were then assessed based on a few important parameters such as agility, tolerance and accuracy. This resulted in one concept, ranked higher than the others and considered to be the most suitable for further development.

▼ The report was a finalization part of the thesis bachelor work in mechanical engineering at Karlstad University. A review of the ViscoNip roll belt stretch was made to Valmet. The background to the project was that the belts became resistant to wear, which meant that it was no longer necessary to adjust the machine direction. Previously the belt was moved in the machine direction to expose a new and fresh surface to even the wear. The increased quality of the belt has led to the possibility of applying a fixed side. The goal with the thesis work was to minimize the cost of the belt tension. The project has gone thru a development process where project planning, product specification, concept generation, concept evaluation and layout design was included. Through a cost analysis and input from the relevant fitters and service staff, it was found that a trapezoidal screw was a highly rated solution for the head adjustment. Due to the requirement for continuous belt tension, the trapezoidal screw and a fixed end could not be combined. As there were several advantages with the trapezoidal screw, a solution was created that was to combine a trapezoidal screw with a spring. These along with a fixed head became the winning concept. Before the thesis work, the cost of the ViscoNip roll belt stretch was 226 321 kr. In that price was installation, hydraulics, trapezoidal screw and displacement components. Upon completion of the thesis, a fixed side was applied to the driving side together with a trapezoidal screw combined with a driver's spring. The estimated cost was instead 155 477 kr, a saving of 70 845 kr.

▼ The aim of the project is to create a concept proposal on a fundamental construction of a test equipment for Volvo Penta, where observations of their seals can be carried out. The current day problem is the difficulty to obtain consistent test results during test experiments in the oceans, due to the test environment never being identical to another. The factors that affect the test environment was initially examined, where a list of those we considered having the biggest impact was created. In addition, discussion upon the requirements to obtain a functional equipment took place. A thorough information gathering process was carried out to establish a work foundation, of the theory necessary to assemble a construction. Material comparisons and mechanical strength simulations using FEA, was examined. The result became a theoretical test equipment that met the requirement specification, function analysis. The test equipment was presented in 3D modeled pictures using CAD.
Projektet syftar till att framställa ett konceptförslag på en principiell konstruktion av en testutrustning åt Volvo Penta, där undersökning av deras tätningar skall kunna utföras. Problemet i dagsläget är att det är svårt att få ut konsistenta provresultat vid tester ute i havet eftersom testmiljön aldrig är identisk varje gång. Inledningsvis granskades faktorer som kan påverka testmiljön, där en lista över de som vi ansåg ha störst effekt skapades. Därutöver diskuterades vad som krävdes för att erhålla en fungerande testutrustning. En utförlig informationsinsamling genomfördes för att grundlägga arbetet med teori som krävdes för att sammanställa en konstruktion. Material jämfördes och hållfasthetssimuleringar i form av FEA, undersöktes. Resultatet blev en teoretisk testrigg som uppfyller kravspecifikationen, funktionsanalysen, och presenterades i 3D modellerade bilder genom CAD.

▼ Valmet is a world leading supplier of tissue machines. In the tissue industry the demand on the machines is high to be able to produce the finest paper for use in products such as toilet paper and napkins. The machine components need to perform to be able to produce a product of consistent quality. Many different properties of the tissue can be evaluated through manipulation of the fibre content. Layers of cellulose are added into the process through a headbox, which acts as nozzle which distributes the fibres and water along the machine width. The tissue machines can be around 6 metres wide which put high demands on structural rigidity of the machine components to be able to maintain a uniform product along the machine width. Crucial parts are calculated prior to manufacturing to make sure they fulfil stress and rigidity criteria. This thesis covers the development of such a computational model of a headbox. The aim was to create a model which will be accurate in terms of deflection but also fast to calculate using ANSYS Workbench software. Many simplifications were made in the model to speed up solving time such as: • Removal of non-structural parts • Mirror symmetry • Material manipulation to replace perforated structurally important itemsAlso contact formulations were showing a large effect on accuracy and solution time in the model.With applied simplifications the solver time was decreased by over 73% compared to the initial model. The computational model was used in the thesis to evaluate the current configuration of the transverse welds in the headbox when exposed to static load. The load was applied by internal pressure. An evaluation was desirable following a material change from austenitic stainless steel SS2343 to the LDX2101 of duplex grade. LDX2101 which have a significantly higher yield stress of near 500 MPa compared to 250 MPa for SS2343.For static evaluation the welds showed low stresses in welds throughout the headbox. This leaves room to possible optimization of weld applications by reduction to least recommended throat measure of 3mm. This reduction result in quicker manufacturing time and thereby lower manufacturing costs. Static calculations show possible reductions of 66% in application time.

Saab has ordered a concept which allows launching of a sonobuoy from a pressurized aircraft cabin, this is a perfect opportunity to test this theory because it is a real system with technical demands to ensure robustness and safety. The process used was decided to be parts from different literature where methods that suited the concept at the current state would be used. This was performed differently depending on the current state of the concept. For example the product requirement process were established in a different way than the concept generation because they are different, one is mostly gathering facts while the other is mainly a creative phase. Regardless of the step in the concept development process the objective was to always use some sort help from the methodology. A combination of lacking experience with the technical area and applying concept development methodology towards a industrial problem slowed down the process. The final concept were not as developed as the plan was from the start. To perform each step required more research than what was intended and some steps became an iterative process which also took time from the actual development. However, the actual process of setting up requirements, generating ideas and evaluating concepts should also be regarded as deliverable for this study. It is material that can be used for future development and this concept where never intended to be a finished design which mean it is useful material for the future. To use concept development methodology for this kind of projects is recommended based on this study. Foremost when the experience of the system is limited, it ensures that the solution space and requirements are examined more than it would have without the process. It also helps with decision making and when discussing a concept within the group which could lead to an agreement which it might not would have without the methods.

▼ In order to meet today’s environmental standards, diesel vehicles must capture the soot and ash emitted from the engine in what is known as a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The continual ash loading of this filter and subsequent exhaust backpressure, increase in fuel consumption, etc. is seen as an unavoidable expense. Replacing the DPF is time consuming and costly, representing significant lost profits to the vehicle owner. However, by reducing the volume of ash in the DPF, the pressure drop and fuel penalty can be curtailed while simultaneously increasing filter life. The thesis paper has presented a study intended to select the ideal method for reducing DPF ash volume in the context of system level integration on a Scania truck. By following an adaptation of the TRIZ method, this work has selected an ideal solution for improving DPF performance. A brief study of two experimental methods for ash volume reduction is presented. From this study, awide-ranging concept generation phase was undertaken to evaluate the ways these methods could be implemented on a vehicle. Through collaboration with industry experts at Scania, a system of criteria was established to select the most promising concept. One concept was chosen for demonstration: water injection into the DPF through a sensor hole in the silencer housing. The proposed injection strategy is such that when the vehicle comes in for scheduled maintenance, this water injection tool can be used to improve vehicle performance and reduce filter changes. In keeping with the criteria and design constraints, this solution eliminates the complication of additional vehicle components, while still effectively reducing ash volume. An initial prototype and subsequent on-vehicle testing is presented which demonstrates that wetting the DPF in this manner is a viable means of reducing ash volume. The result of this test shows that this method can reduce DPF backpressure from ash by 60% after just 3 minutes of water injection. From these results, suggestion for future improvement to the performance and ergonomics of the injection tool is presented.

It’s a conservative industry where it is important to create a product that does not lead to major changes for the user.The aim of the project has been to develop a product which facilitates a bartender's work, both efficiency but also for reducing stress. With the help of different methods, dynamic product development and concept development, a new type of pourer has been developed. The pourer has been created with clear requirements to produce a user-friendly product.With the help of local bars, designers and prototype manufacturers DoubleUP was created. The thesis resulted in a double pourer, hence the name DoubleUP. The product is reminiscent of today's existing pourer consisting of one pipe, with the difference that several customers can now be served at the same time.

▼ Shell Eco Marathon is a competition where the goal is to make a vehicle as energy efficient as possible. One team that compete in the competition is HiGtech, whose vehicle is using a frame of steel pipes. Because of that, their vehicle weight more than most of the competitors who uses carbon fiber monocoques. Therefore, in order to be able to compete with the best teams, a carbon fiber monocoque is required. The purpose with the thesis is to reduce the weight of HiGtech:s car and the goal is to develop a finished model for a monocoque. Included in the goal is also to develop a new steering function and engine bracket and new solutions for the wheels and brakes attachment to the vehicle. After a literature study, it was decided that the carrying details of the monocoque should be built by using a Sandwich construction to reduce the weight and factors that affects the strength was looked in to. Three concepts for the monocoque was developed using brainstorming, which was evaluated with results from Finite Element Analyses when the concepts was evaluated relative each other. After a winning concept was determined, it was further developed and dimensions and strength for the carrying details was set using Ansys ACP module where a safety against collapse could be determined. After the monocoque was developed, concepts for steering and engine bracket could be developed. The concepts was evaluated and a winning concept was chosen to be further developed and dimensioned. Solutions for the wheels and brakes attachment to the vehicle was made and dimensioned. A honeycomb-core with a thickness of 25 mm is needed. Two layers of carbon fiber is needed on the frame around the geometry is needed, one layer on each side. On the bottom plate it is needed two layers on each side. This will give a safety on 2,5 against structural collapse and a mass on 8,7 kg. The engine mount will have a safety clearance of 12. The torque rod will have a saftey on 5. For the front wheelbarrowing the safety will be 4 and for the rear suspension the safety will be 2. Since the modell for the body is not compatible whit Inventor could the strenght of the body not be calculated with. The bottomplate could be optimized further, which should decrease the weight furhter.

▼ I Hudiksvall ligger ett företag som tillverkar och utvecklar hydrauliska gripare för hantering av virke, skrot och byggmateriel. Företagets egentillverkade hydraulcylin-der hade analyserats av Institutet för tillämpad hydraulik i Örnsköldsvik (ITH). Analysen visade att hydraulsystemet innehöll en stor mängd föroreningar. Förore-ningar från tillverkning och montering fanns kvar i griparens hydraulsystem i le-veransklara produkter, vilket indikerade att brister förekom vid hantering och tvätt av komponenter. Därför fanns ett behov av att utreda om den tvättutrustning som användes, klarade av att rengöra komponenter till den nivå, som krävs. Hantering av rengjorda komponenter behövde utredas för att säkerställa att produkterna höll den renlighet som krävdes fram till färdigmontage. Målet med arbetet var att föreslå åt-gärder och rutiner för att minska antalet, och mängden, föroreningar genom bättre tvättmetoder och hanteringsmetoder. En teoretiskreferensram skapades genom litteraturstudie av relevanta vetenskapliga artiklar och publikationer. Med syfte att skapa större förståelse om hur hydrauliken påverkas av föroreningar och hur dessa kunde undvikas vid montering av hydraul-komponenter, även tvättmetoder studerades. Under arbetet har metoder kombinerats för att kunna genomföra en kartläggning av hanteringen i processflödet. Metoderna som har kombinerats, inom en fallstudie på företaget var, nulägesbeskrivning, observationer och processflödesscheman. Resultatet var att den tvättutrustning som användes inte klarade av att leverera den renhet som behövdes. Att företaget, i sitt processflöde, har lång liggtid för färdig-berarbetade komponenter i smutsig miljö. De åtgärder som föreslogs av projekt-gruppen var att byta ut tvättutrustningen och att förvara komponenter dammskyddat. Trots användandet av fallstudie kan arbetet vara vägledande för andra företag i lik-nande situationer, vilket medför en viss generaliserbarhet av arbetet, då företaget som fallstudien utförs på antas vara en typisk produktion av hydraulcylindrar. Slutsatsen av arbetet var att företaget efter byte av tvättutrustning och genom bättre och dammskyddad förvaring kommer att kunna leverera gripare med en högnivå av renlighet.
In Hudiksvall there is a company that manufactures and develops hydraulic grippers for handling wood, scrap and building materials. The company's proprietary hydraulic cylinder was analyzed by the Institute for Applied Hydraulics in Örnsköldsvik (ITH). Their analysis showed that the hydraulic system contained a large amount of impurities. Pollution from manufacturing and assembly remained in the gripper's hydraulic system in deliverable products, indicating that faults occur in handling and cleaning of components.
