▼ Open Educational Resources (OER) have created opportunities for learners around the world. Previous research investigated different OER development models for higher educational institutions and other educational communities. However, maintaining sustainability remains the main challenge of OER projects, as there is a high demand on raising awareness of the value of OER in higher education, as well as the need for expanding a participation base in the OER development process and improving the quality of OER. As a response to these challenges, the research documented in this thesis presents a new OER development model that establishes communities of practices around OER in higher educational institutions, where the knowledge production that takes place inside classrooms provides sustainable resources for the OER development process. OER literature also shows initiatives on engaging students in the OER development process, however, there is a lack of rigor research that shows the principles of engaging students in this process. Hence, this study is focused on identifying the design principles of the sustainable OER development model that engages students in generating OER. The model was designed to establish communities of practice of students and teachers to work collaboratively in generating learning resources. In the context of computing and information technology studies for undergraduate learning environments, students generate a surplus of projects in different study units with some projects repurposed, however, a surplus of projects that are generated on every academic semester are rarely tapped into. This abundance of knowledge production is described as ‘cognitive surplus’ and tapping into it can maximise the value of these projects. Therefore, the proposed OER development model taps into the cognitive surplus of student-generated content, where instead of generating summaries and portfolios, students create learning resources based on the unit topics using content authoring software tools. In this model, teachers work as facilitators and co-creators, providing evaluation of learning resources in order to be published as OER. To engage students in generating learning resources for OER, the learning assessment approach was taken from assessing student projects on reproducing information to a new level where students engaged in structuring, designing, collecting and evaluating content for generating learning resources which was then shared online as OER. These activities maximised students’ responsibilities, because sharing work online motivated them to improve the quality of the learning content. To be able to design a new OER development model, there was a need to understand the characteristics of the learning environment, including students, teachers and the learning material. ▼ Introduction: A wide variety of treatment modalities have been employed over the years to treat anterior open bite (AOB) in adults, but there is little reliable evidence to support the primacy of any particular method. Additionally, we know very little about how patient factors affect clinical decision making for adult AOB. The purpose of this study is to explore how practitioner, patient, and dentofacial characteristics are associated with treatment decisions in adult AOB treatment across the United States. Methods: Study participants were recruited from the practices of National Dental Practice-based Research Network dentists. Participants consisted of practitioners and their adult patients in active treatment for AOB that met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Practitioners completed questionnaires including questions about demographics, preferred techniques for treating open-bites, and study patient dentofacial characteristics. Patients were given a questionnaire that asked about chief complaints, treatment goals and expectations, and reasons for selecting a treatment plan. Initial pre-treatment cephalograms were collected for each patient and were traced to obtain patient dentofacial characteristics. The association of each of the dentofacial, patient, and practitioner characteristics with different treatment recommendations were ascertained using Chi-square tests for categorical variables. For patient cephalometric variables (including OB, SN-MP, ANB), ANOVA was performed. For the dentofacial domain, logistic regression analyzed the dichotomous outcome of surgery most recommended treatment plan vs. no surgery. Results: A total of 68 practitioners and 199 adult patients participated in the investigation. A statistically significant mean difference was detected among practitioners prescribing TADs based on where they attended dental school (36% foreign trained recommend TADs often vs. 5% US trained, p=0.002) and based on their race (5% Caucasian providers “often prescribe” TADs, while 24% of Asian practitioners “often prescribe”; p=0.03). Patient acceptance was not associated with age or education level but was influenced by insurance coverage. When a patient did not have medical insurance that covered surgical costs, the acceptance rate for a surgical plan was much lower (47.7%) than when they did have coverage for the procedure (78.6%, p=0.009). Mandibular plane angle, initial overbite, and molar classification were all independently associated with a surgical recommendation. Conclusions: This study found several interesting associations between practitioner, patient, and dentofacial characteristics and treatment recommendations. Open plan classrooms, where several class bases share the same space, have recently reemerged in Australian primary schools. This is due to a more child-centred teaching philosophy which focuses on group work, sharing resources, and the social development of the child. They also promote team-teaching and joint collaboration which is thought to facilitate a more cooperative and supportive teaching and learning atmosphere. However, because of the large number of children engaging in different activities and the lack of barriers between classes, these spaces are subject to high noise levels. Therefore, it is timely to conduct research in these classrooms to assess their appropriateness for 5-6-year-old Kindergarten children.

This thesis by publication is comprised of five studies that aim to comprehensively compare the listening environments of four different types of classrooms: an enclosed classroom with 25 children, a double classroom with 44 children, an untreated linear fully open plan triple classroom with 91 children, and a purpose-built semi-open plan Kindergarten-to-Year-6 classroom with 205 children. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the studies. Chapter 2 describes the first objective study which calculated and compared the noise levels, signal-to-noise ratios, speech transmission index scores, and reverberation times across classrooms. Chapter 3 describes the development of a new classroom speech perception task that can be conducted live and efficiently in real classroom listening environments. This speech perception task was used in the third study (Chapter 4) to objectively assess how the acoustics of the classrooms measured in the first study affect children’s speech perception accuracy and speed. Chapters 5 and 6 describe the subjective studies of this thesis which examined the children’s and teachers’ perceptions of their classroom listening environment via a questionnaire. ▼ Employees within open-plan offices are at greater risk of experiencing anxiety in comparison to employees within cell offices. Organizational Behavior studies overlook why some employees within open-plan offices are more vulnerable of experiencing anxiety than others. This thesis addresses calls for richer recounts of the variation of employees’ experiences of anxiety within open-plan offices. Specifically, this thesis investigates two research questions: what are the different ways employees understand their experiences of anxiety within open-plan offices? and how are employees’ understandings of experiencing anxiety related to the ways they experience anxiety within open-plan offices? From an interpretative paradigm, this study adopted a phenomenography approach to identify a variation of employees’ understandings of their experiences of anxiety within open-plan offices. This study drew on the Personal Construct Theory (PCT) to explain how individuals can vary in their understandings of experiencing anxiety. Data was derived from 19 semi-structured interviews and observations of employees’ experiences across three open-plan offices. Data was analyzed using Sandberg (2000)’s phenomenography approach. Five understandings of experiencing anxiety within open-plan offices were identified. Employees who experience anxiety as helplessness feel stuck when experiencing anxiety. Employees who experience anxiety as hurt feel discomfort. Employees who experience anxiety as a vulnerability perceive anxiety is a weakness. Employees who experience anxiety as a problem to be solved express confidence in their ability to resolve anxiety. Employees who experience anxiety as stimulating self-development perceive anxiety as an opportunity for personal growth. Major findings postulate that employees who experience anxiety as helplessness, hurt and a vulnerability are prone to maladaptive experiences of anxiety. Maladaptive experiences occur when anxiety interferes with one’s life in a negative manner. Employees who experience anxiety as a problem to be solved and stimulating self-development are prone to adaptive experiences of anxiety. Adaptive experiences occur when people are motivated to overcome anxiety. These understandings may underpin employees’ ways of experiencing anxiety within the open-plan offices. Employees’ understandings of experiencing anxiety promoted and inhibited specific ways of experiencing anxiety. Employees who experience anxiety as helplessness, hurt and a vulnerability promoted ways that emphasized negative aspects of anxiety. These understandings inhibited ways of experiencing anxiety that led to adaptive experiences of anxiety. Whereas, employees who experience anxiety as a problem to be solved and stimulating self-development promoted ways that emphasized positive aspects of anxiety. These understandings inhibited ways of experiencing anxiety that led to maladaptive experiences of anxiety. ▼ In the past few years, many companies have made the transition from an office with closed working spaces, towards open offices. The Dutch office of IKEA CBF made the transition to an open office in 2016, to support an activity-based way of working. This new way of working has to lead to an increase in complaints, about noise and distractions within the office. Co-workers commonly related this experience nuisance to auditory stimulation, however, visual or temporal stimuli could contribute to this as well. The experience of the office was researched from a co-worker centered perspective, through interviews and contextmapping session. This revealed that co-workers mainly experience nuisance, when they are being distracted during individual focused work activities. Co-workers identified that they experience nuisance caused by six main sources, both relating to the behavior of co-workers and office facilities. Where most co-workers experienced nuisance from co-workers conversation and movement/foot traffic. The amount of nuisance a co-workers experiences is mainly dependent on their role and the amount of individual work activities they perform. nuisance, than other co-workers. Next to this the individual experiences of co-workers are influenced by factors that influence the presence of specific sources and co-workers general ability to deal with nuisance. Co-workers here most frequently identified that individual needs and a low awareness about their own effect on their surroundings, to affect their general experience of nuisance. Finally co-workers all had an equal access to tools to protect themselves from nuisance. Consequently, co-workers’ general experience of nuisance could most effectively be decreased through a design intervention that improves co-workers’ ability to protect themselves from nuisance during individual work. Next to this Co-creation activities with the Com&In teamshowed that a physical design intervention, that could be applied as an individual solution to protect co-workers from nuisance, would most likely lead to valuable insights for the Com&In team. Following I developed Fridfold, a stimulation barrier aimed at decreasing the amount of nuisance that co-workers experience from auditory and visual stimulation, while working at their desks. This design aimed to make working at an individual deskspace feel ‘fridfull’ or serene, by having a calming effect on co-workers. To achieve this Fridfold was developed to both decrease the amount of stimulation and co-workers perception of stimulation. To achieve this, Fridfold aims to decrease co-workers perception of stimulation by increasing co-workers sense of control, through the interactivity of the design, and the perceived sound damping of materials, through the application of a three-dimensional textured screen. The evaluation of the design with students and co-workers showed that the Fridfold influenced the amount of visual stimulation and improved co-workers sense of control, through the interactivity of the design. ▼ The ambient conditions such as air quality, noise, music, temperature, lighting and colour, in open-plan offices and their impact on employees are important for managements to recognize because open-plan offices are becoming more and more common in Swedish companies' office design today (Aronsson, 2005). For students, who will soon be entering the work force, it is important to understand how the characteristics of the ambient conditions can influence employee behaviour/satisfaction. To have a working knowledge of what kinds of effects the ambient conditions can have is likely to increase one's chances of becoming a satisfied employee. An employee that is aware of the importance of creating a servicescape (the attributes of the physical surrounding) that meets its needs and desires is likely to enhance its satisfaction in the ambient conditions. A great number of managements may not be aware of the risks of working in an open-plan office where the ambient conditions are not satisfying the employees; ergonomic issues as well as heart diseases are the most serious results (Evans and Johnson, 2000, pp. 780-782). This leads to the problem formulation of this thesis: "How can management improve employee satisfaction in an open-plan office through the characteristics of a servicescape's ambient conditions?”. Four main theories are included in the Theoretical Framework to provide a deep understanding for the reader about the complexity of problems that comes with working in an open-plan office. The Bitner theory and the research compiled by Sundstrom discuss ambient conditions and their impacts on employees' behaviour/satisfaction. Evans and Johnson’s theory discusses how stress is related to low-intensity noise. The final main theory, Person-Environment Fit, upholds the importance of a servicescape that fits employees’ needs and desires. The ambient conditions influence employee behaviours in numerous ways (Davis, 1984, pp. 271) and at Sogeti’s open-plan office several ambient conditions are studied through an observation conducted during April 17th 2007 and a questionnaire with 15 closed questions. The outcomes of the observation and the questionnaire are analysed and concrete proposals are created for the Sogeti management to act upon in order to improve the characteristics of their open-plan office’s ambient conditions and thereby improve employee satisfaction. One of the concrete proposals to how Sogeti may improve the ambient conditions in their open-plan office is to introduce a survey that should be handed out to the employees three or four times a year. The purpose of the survey is to define employees’ perceptions of the different ambient conditions. Based on the outcomes from the survey, employees’ needs and desires of the servicescape, the ambient conditions’ characteristics, can be improved. The position, height, and orientation of partitions affect the amount and distribution of daylight entering a building as well as all forms of thermal transfer through windows. However, these potential impacts cannot be determined if not adequately addressed in guidelines and standards, and could mislead decision-making during design stages and hamper the refinement of office furniture manufacturing. This study outlines the daylight performance of workstation partition alternatives in a large open plan office on the 11th floor of a high-rise building located in downtown Raleigh, NC. For this purpose, 60 alternate combinations of workstation partitions including partition materials, layouts, heights, and orientations in four daylight zones (north, south, east, and west) were conducted using Radiance engine V.4.2.0. These combinations were analyzed based on two recently recommended annual climate-based daylighting metrics and performance criteria proposed by Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) 2012, spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) and Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE), to evaluate the feasibility and potential effectiveness of workstation partition design. Findings indicate that partition material, height, orientation, and layout have robust impacts on daylight sufficiency and the risk of daylight excessiveness. Annual daylighting simulation results report that sDA values in this study space range between 46.6% and 84%, and ASE differs by 10.6% to 15.2%. It is also revealed that the highest annual daylight sufficiency values and the lowest daylight excessiveness belong to those partitions oriented perpendicular to windows based on spine layout. Exploring these alternatives in detail helps draw attention to the possible partition layouts that are both effective and economical to overcome glare and visually uncomfortable conditions in open plan offices. More widespread application of daylight-based partition design in open plan offices could result in a better understanding of their performances, as well as improvements in their overall efficiency.
