▼ Open innovation opens up organizational boundaries so that a company can use and combine internal and external knowledge to develop and commercialize its own innovations, and can take its internal knowledge to market through external channels to generate additional value. There are many studies on large companies that use open innovation in order to develop their products, and keep up with rapid economic changes which affect their businesses. However there are not many studies on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in terms of open innovation. SMEs are crucially important in global economy and innovation. They account for a large proportion in the global economy and create a large number of employment opportunities. They are more innovative than larger companies due to their flexibility and ability to quickly and efficiently integrate inventions created by their development activities. Nonetheless they lack of resources and appropriate structures. Accordingly innovation processes and strategies used for product development by large companies may not be appropriate for them. This study examines if SMEs should adopt open innovation activities for their product development and suggests that SMEs should adopt open innovation activities as complementary approaches to their internal R&D for their product development.

▼ The purpose of this study is to explore critical aspects in the establishment of an open innovation arena. This study considers only the perspective of science parks as the establisher and facilitator of the open innovation arenas. By understanding these critical aspects science parks and its participants can benefit from improved innovativeness. Using existing theories, a theoretical framework illustrating critical aspects for the establishment of an open innovation arena was created and subsequently tested through a qualitative research strategy. The research design included case studies into four science parks, three in Sweden and one in the UK, at various stages of establishing and facilitating open innovation arenas. The primary data comprised interviews with top management at each of the science parks, as well as one interview with a committee overseeing science parks in Sweden. The locations for the case study selection were based on Sweden and United Kingdom’s current prominence and success in fostering collaborations. The results of this study indicate that there are a number of critical aspects important during the establishment of open innovation arenas by science parks. Among these critical aspects are the selection of participants, a neutral and passive stance on formalization of contracts and IP, the creation of trust and motivation within the arena, the importance of the physical arena setting and the benefit of an arena topic area prominent amongst the surrounding participants. In addition, this study shows the importance of science parks’ neutral position, as well as the influence of the participants throughout all aspects. Based on these findings, practical and theoretical implications are presented and discussed in the paper. The key implications of this study are that science parks should play an active role to select appropriate projects and participants in order to create trust and motivation within the arena, provide a physical meeting place and access to specialized equipment that fosters communication and encourages collaboration among participants, as well as sourcing projects close to the science park’s geographical proximity. Additionally, they should choose one or more topic area and utilize networks in order to build up expertise, While science parks should play a passive role regarding formalization and IP regulations, it is important that they know how to assists the participants when requested.

▼ This study explores The Role of Knowledge Broker in
Open Innovation Framework.
Open innovation is an increasingly important issue. Since
open innovation concepts have been proposed in 2003, many organizations continue to change its strategy in order to be able to benefit in the
open innovation.
Open innovation allows companies to eliminate organizational boundaries between internal and external, which make
innovation and resources can freely go out and inside.
Open Innovation by its nature, can be divided into inbound
open innovation and outbound
open innovation. Inbound
open innovation is that an organization can make outside ideas into the organization to assist
innovation; Outbound
open innovation refers to the internal organization released patent to the outside world, so that the patent can effectively use and organization can get premium. The knowledge broker is very important when companies conduct
open innovation strategy.
The knowledge broker refers to people who disseminate knowledge to the public. Organizations which implement
open innovation need an occupation who can link the external resources and internal resources. This position needs to be able to effectively link different areas to generate
innovation. Because frequent transfer and exchange of knowledge, many foreign enterprises start to set up the knowledge broker.
Currently in Taiwan, we are not sure if is there existing knowledge broker, and what role is. Therefore, this study use case study to explore this issue. We screened 100 companies and selected six companies to make interview. We concluded that there is no perfect knowledge broker now, but outbound
open innovation knowledge broker and in bound
open innovation knowledge broker exist. And knowledge broker could not only broker knowledge, but also have the knowledge in other field. By this, it can know how and why can he outbound and inbound
innovation.

▼ A better understanding of Open Source Innovation in Physical Product (OSIP) might allow project managers to mitigate risks associated with this innovation model and process, while developing the right strategies to maximise OSIP outputs. In the software industry, firms have been highly successful using Open Source Innovation (OSI) strategies. However, OSI in the physical world has not been studied leading to the research question: What advantages and disadvantages do organisations incur from using OSI in physical products? An exploratory research methodology supported by thirteen semi-structured interviews helped us build a seven-theme framework to categorise advantages and disadvantages elements linked with the use of OSIP. In addition, factors impacting advantage and disadvantage elements for firms using OSIP were identified as: „h Degree of openness in OSIP projects; „h Time of release of OSIP in the public domain; „h Use of Open Source Innovation in Software (OSIS) in conjunction with OSIP; „h Project management elements (Project oversight, scope and modularity); „h Firms. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) values; „h Value of the OSIP project to the community. This thesis makes a contribution to the body of innovation theory by identifying advantages and disadvantages elements of OSIP. Then, from a contingency perspective it identifies factors which enhance or decrease advantages, or mitigate/ or increase disadvantages of OSIP. In the end, the research clarifies the understanding of OSI by clearly setting OSIP apart from OSIS. The main practical contribution of this paper is to provide manager with a framework to better understand OSIP as well as providing a model, which identifies contingency factors increasing advantage and decreasing disadvantage. Overall, the research allows managers to make informed decisions about when they can use OSIP and how they can develop strategies to make OSIP a viable proposition. In addition, this paper demonstrates that advantages identified in OSIS cannot all be transferred to OSIP, thus OSIP decisions should not be based upon OSIS knowledge.

▼ While there is a growing trend towards openness between organisations in terms of their knowledge flows and contractual relationships, the applicability and effectiveness of the
open innovation paradigm has yet to be fully explored. While the advocates of
open innovation point to its considerable benefits, there still remains the need to assess whether firms can, in practice, actually capture these asserted benefits. This overarching research problem, which forms the foundation of this doctoral research project, leads to two research questions. First, is the
open innovation strategy applicable to all types of firms? Second, do the benefits of
open innovation outweigh its potential costs and the threats to competitive positions of firms? These two issues correspond to the two gaps found in the extant literature of
open innovation that are elaborated in this thesis. To explore these research questions, this research seeks to provide extensive empirical evidence from five main aspects, with particular reference to the inbound stage of the
open innovation paradigm. To do this, five interrelated projects are undertaken, each with a unique contribution to informing the research topic. These closely related investigative components jointly provide consolidated answers to the two research questions. In response to the first research question, an investigation of the generalisability of
open innovation is presented, providing a good application of
open innovation strategy in the context of process
innovation activities and within regional clusters. However, the applicability of this emerging paradigm within Chinese SMEs and firms in service industries are not observed. The findings also indicate that some
open innovation approaches (such as R&D outsourcing) and some external knowledge sources (from agencies such as
universities and research institutes) are not shown to facilitate
open innovation effectiveness as strongly as other relational arrangements. Furthermore, over-openness towards external sources might generate some adverse effects on firms. Therefore, it is suggested by this research that the decisions regarding whether and how to adopt an
open innovation strategy should be contingent on specific situational factors within focal firms. In response to the second research question, this research also suggests that the benefits of openness are achievable in many situations, but are not likely to always
outweigh its potential costs and threats. It is found that certain organisational attributes (namely the suitable level of investment in absorptive capacity and an effective role of R&D) within firms, and the appropriate degree of knowledge protection/disclosure by firms, are two essential prerequisites for firms’ ability to seize
open innovation benefits. This doctoral research makes a valuable contribution to the field of
open innovation. From the theoretical perspective, it addresses significant gaps in the existing literature, establishes a comprehensive conceptual framework for this paradigm, extends
knowledge and…

The subject of the thesis was to develop a concept of an entertainment game which teaches the kids within the targetgroup on healthy eating habits and the consequences of the nutrition in a human body. The aim was to create concept illustrations, transcript and material for marketing to take the project to the next level in the near future. In addition, one of the purposes was to maintain and demonstrate cross-field working, imitating the open innovation model between the Product Design department and the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourist Management at the Savonia University of Applied Sciences.
There was a will to take a stand on the global overweight problem of the younger generation, because the habits we learn as kids, will nearly without exception continue to the maturity. If we learn to make sensible decisions as kids, we are able to maintain them as adults, as well.
The developed game concept and its progression was presentated in both text and image formats to give the reader a complete picture about the progress of the game, user interface design and the graphic look.

▼ Opinnäytetyössä tarkastellaan verkkoympäristön mahdollisuuksia tuoda lisäarvoa Savonia- ammattikorkeakoulun opiskelijoiden palvelukokemukseen. Tavoitteena oli suunnitella verkko- ympäristö tukemaan Savonia-ammattikorkeakoulun OIS-ajattelua. OIS lyhennetään sanoista Open Innovation Space ja sen tarkoitus on kuvata Savonia-ammattikorkeakoulun yhteistoi- minnan ideologiaa, jossa opetukseen liitetyn TKI-toiminnan avulla tuotettaisiin monialaisissa ympäristöissä kysyntälähtöisiä tuotteita ja palveluita. Lopputyö etenee palvelumuotoilun pro- sessin kolmivaiheisen mallin mukaan: tutkimus, palvelun kehitys ja palvelun arviointi.
Taustatutkimuksella selvitettiin ammattikorkeakoulujen yleisiä kehittämisen tavoitteita ja niihin liittyviä opiskelijoiden palvelukokemuksien ongelmakohtia. Palvelun kehitys vaiheessa taustaselvityksistä saatujen johtopäätösten avulla tunnistettiin palvelulle tavoiteltavia ominai- suuksia, joista syntyi palvelukonsepti. Viimeisessä, palvelun arviointi vaiheessa, selvitettiin mahdollisen palvelukokemuksen tuoma arvo opiskelijalle ja tuotiin esille suuntaa antavia mit- tareita palvelun asiakastyytyväisyyden arvioimiseen.
Merkittävin opinnäytetyön tuloksista on palvelun kehittämistä varten suunniteltu TOKIO-malli. TOKIO-mallilla pyritään selventämään, miten yhdistettäisiin TKI-toimintaa enemmän osaksi Savonian opetusta.
This thesis examines the opportunities of a social networking service to add value to the ser- vice experiences that students get in Savonia University of Applied Sciences. The goal was to design a social networking service to support Savonia’s OIS perspective. OIS stands for Open Innovation Space and its importance is to describe the cooperative ideology of Savonia, where RDI activities and teaching are connected to the development of a multi-disciplinary environment for demand driven products and services.
This thesis then proceeds according to the three-stage service design process: research, de- velopment and evaluation.
In the research part the general objectives of improvement in the universities of applied sciences, and the problem areas in the related student services, were mapped. In the de- velopment part certain characteristics of service were identified, then the conclusions were made, and thereafter the idea of the final service concept was born. After this the service concept was visualized into a service blueprint, which would be used in the process of producing a service. In the last part, service evaluation, the possible value of these service experiences to the students is being examined and directional indicators to help to evaluate the customer satisfaction are being presented.
TOKIO-model is the most notable single result of this thesis. With the help of the TOKIO- model, this thesis tries to figure out how to integrate the RDI activities more firmly into the services that Savonia provides.

▼ Researchers use
open innovation to address novel outward practices and assess the sophistication of inward processes. This thesis first discusses the notion of
innovation and then reviews the
open innovation literature and reveals that little attention has been paid to the practical aspect of
open innovation practices. The thesis examines the specific case of
open innovation in a collaborative business initiative, ElNet, located within the higher education sector to illustrate the barriers and enablers to
open innovation. The study’s objective is to understand
open innovation practices from a relational perspective, explaining (1) why and how businesses engage in
open innovation and (2) how barriers and enablers interrelate. Data were interpreted through iterative thematic and narrative analysis and theorized using sociomateriality concepts. This lens focused particularly on the material practices that are socially enacted in implementing
open innovation. This analysis explores the way that the interrelations between enablers and barriers to
open innovation are illuminated through sociomaterial practices. This study focuses on the dynamics of these development paths by focusing on four episodes which elaborate how the case study members engaged in an
open innovation project. The application of sociomateriality to show how the material and social realms are entangled and how sociomaterial dynamics are enacted through practices is relevant to an exploration of
open innovation practices. Thus, the sociomateriality focus of this analysis provides an important contribution to the literature and creates opportunities for potential improvements in practice.

▼ In today’s fast paced world, software companies face constant challenges to keep up with their competitors and meet the changing needs of their clients through innovation. While large software companies have significant resources for innovation, small and medium companies lack resources and must innovate more efficiently. These companies are also key to the innovation cycle, often making leading-edge discoveries that large companies cannot achieve. Without the resources to develop ideas internally, these companies must find innovation ideas from any source available. These small and medium software companies must be able to effectively find, internalize and exploit innovations. This is called Absorptive Capacity and defining how small and medium software companies can maximize innovation performance using absorptive capacity is the focus of our study. Absorptive capacity is made up of the following:
1. Finding the right innovation
2. Understanding and absorb the knowledge
3. Exploiting the innovation to drive success
Thus, finding strategies to maximize absorptive capacity is the key to successful innovation for these firms. Our study will focus on finding the most effective absorptive capacity strategies for small and medium sized Canadian software firms.
Based on the available literature, the key elements that define how firms can choose the most optimal strategies for absorptive capacity are:
• Type of Innovation
• Breadth of the Knowledge Search
• Depth of Knowledge Search
• Partnering strategy
• Knowledge intake strategy
• Knowledge sharing strategy
In the study we interviewed 54 small and medium sized Canadian software firms that were engaged in External Open Innovation. The interview covered the areas above.
The results showed key relationships between the variables that resulted in the following outcomes:
• Firms Doing Radical Innovation Use External Solutions
• Firms Doing Incremental Innovation Work in House
• Centralized R&D Organizations Prefer Finding Solutions Not Knowledge
• Custom Development Firms Source Innovations and Integrate
• Product Based Firms Source and Share Ideas and Build in House
These outcomes offer an opportunity to guide firms on how to best absorb knowledge as part of their innovation process. This will help these firms absorb knowledge and build innovations based on them, and successfully enhance their futures and their ability to compete.

▼ IT-enabled
innovation contest platforms are quickly growing in prominence due their provision of a cost effective, yet far reaching method of allowing organisations to connect with a global network of
innovation solvers. Borne of the
open innovation movement, this phenomenon and the research surrounding it have emerged suddenly and proliferated rapidly. Although conceptual support for the relevance of social capital as an antecedent of
innovation seems compelling, there is a distinct lack of research to support this in existing literature. The result is that little is understood by scholars and practitioners in terms of its influence in the overall contest setting. This research study explores the heretofore unexplored influences of social capital toward these contests. Empirical data was gathered through two rounds of data collection, a pilot study of Trend Micro along with case studies of 15 separate IT-enabled
innovation contest platforms. Through this analysis, three theoretical models emerged from the findings, which in turn formed: i. A preliminary theory of social capital for
innovation contest platforms ii A preliminary theory of social capital for competitive markets iii A preliminary theory of social capital for collaborative communities The study contributes to IS theory and practice in several ways. Firstly, it provides the first investigation of social capital theory within the
innovation contest domain. Through the research strategy implemented, social capital theory is revealed to be a valid and appropriate theoretical lens that can be implemented by future researchers. Secondly, this investigation provides a solid foundation for further investigations, and the academic community is encouraged to validate and refine the theorisations presented herein. Thirdly, the findings serve to identify the strategic value of social capital constructs, while also presenting the mechanisms used to facilitate their development. Fourthly, the findings of this study highlight the need for an understanding of appropriate management strategies towards social capital within the
innovation contest platforms.

▼ Through three research papers, this thesis develops a holistic understanding of how intermediaries facilitate organizations engage in open innovation by crowdsourcing from online communities. The first paper provides a systematic bibliometric review of the open innovation literature, to uncover key research gaps and set an agenda, suggesting how theoretical lenses from external fields such as organizational behavior and marketing can be applied to more comprehensively explore the open innovation phenomenon. The remaining two empirical papers follow these recommendations in examining different facets of intermediary-mediated, community-based open innovation. Drawing on the Community of Practice perspective of knowledge, the second paper draws ideas from organizational behavior to examine the role of open innovation intermediaries in facilitating knowledge collaboration between client organizations and online communities. The third paper makes an additional contribution by integrating the Service-Dominant logic of marketing, to investigate what capabilities intermediaries deploy to enable clients to implement open service innovation through community-based crowdsourcing. By drawing on multiple theoretical perspectives that are under-explored within the literature, this thesis connects open innovation with external research domains, laying the foundation to advance the field toward a sturdier theoretical bent. The insights have practical implications for managers of intermediaries hoping to build client capacity in community-based open innovation.

▼ Entrepreneurship,
innovation and internationalization are topics of great interest for the scientific community, companies and for all major governments worldwide.
In literature there are many studies that are interested and look for the relationship between entrepreneurship and performance. Based on the literature on entrepreneurship,
open innovation (OI), green
innovation performance (GIP) and export performance (EP), we extend the model by hypothesizing and studying to what extent the entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is influenced and mediated by a construct that has become a hot topic among the scientific community in the last decade, as is
open innovation; impacting and facilitating the processes of green
innovation and the internationalization of the companies.
All this is done in an empirical study in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), where resources are scarce and strategies linked to green production and export plays a fundamental role for their performance. Taking as a sample Spanish companies in the footwear industry and companies related to science parks, the analyses are carried out to test these relationships through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). It is expected to find a positive relationship in the object of study.

▼ Open innovation (OI) is currently being applied as a new mode for firms to utilise both internal and external resources for R&D and new product developments. Investigating the impact of OI on China's high-tech firms is becoming increasingly important. Under the guidance of China's national innovation policy and the rise of innovation in high-tech industries, OI is regarded as having a positive impact on the competitiveness of Chinese firms and as bringing a significant innovation outcome. By utilising and integrating external knowledge and resources, OI can promote high-tech firms' R&D development in China's current transitional environment. A key objective of this thesis is to examine the overall relationship between locational factors, ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance given absorptive capacity (ACAP). The thesis reviews the current literature regarding OI, ambidexterity in OI, the cluster effect and ACAP and then integrates these lenses to build links for constructing a new model of the research. This includes the relationships between locational factors, ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance. It also examines the moderating effect of ACAP and, more importantly, the mediation effect of ambidexterity in OI on the relationship between locational factors and innovation performance. The findings of the thesis reveal that locational factors positively affect ambidexterity in OI, while ACAP positively moderates the relationship between the two factors. In addition, ambidexterity in OI - an optimal combination of inbound and outbound OI - can significantly influence innovation performance and is crucial to the ambidextrous conduction of firms. ACAP also positively moderates the relationship between ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance. Finally, ambidexterity in OI can mediate the relationship between locational factors and innovation performance, and ACAP moderates the overall relationship between locational factors, ambidexterity in OI and innovation performance. This thesis makes a number of contributions to the existing OI literature. First, building on the cluster perspective, the thesis contributes to the literature on OI by recognising the influence of locational factors on the balance in OI. The examination of ACAP also contributes to the literature by highlighting the contingent value of ACAP on the relationship between locational factors and the balance in OI. Second, the thesis contributes to the OI literature by bringing a greater conceptual clarity to the view of balance. A more balanced portfolio can bring better innovation performance than those that are less balanced. The thesis also enriches the knowledge in the relationship between the balance in OI and innovation performance, which demonstrates the moderating effect of ACAP on this relationship. Third, the study conceptualises the balance in OI that mediates the relationship between locational factors and innovation performance. It is a key contribution to the existing OI literature by advancing our understanding of the…

▼ Large companies invest a vast amount of capital and time on R&D annually. With all this financial investment in R&D, it is important that the companies get value for their invested capital. By creating innovations, such as new products and services, involve high risk and will necessarily not lead to successful commercial ends. Many companies lack the competencies in selecting ideas and transform them into value. Knowledge in innovations is affecting companies, especially those that are investing heavily in R&D. The present study explain how value can be created from innovation around the topics of innovativeness, innovation protection and market efficiency, within a large global manufacturing company in Sweden with global operations. A four dimensional measure from a prior study has been the base for the structural theoretical model that has been tested. The authors have divided innovativeness, innovation protection and market efficiency into absorptive capacity (ACAP), open innovation, patents, secrecy, lead time advantages and complementary assets and studied modern literature to find relationships between these and how it affects firm performance. They have also done a survey and interviews to examine the present status in a large manufacturing company. The empirical findings show support for a relationship between ACAP and firm performance, ACAP and success of strategic alliances as well as a relationship between protection of innovation and success of strategic alliances.
▼ Background: With the Open Innovation paradigm come new hopes for innovating companies. The ability to tap a global network of experts can, at least in theory, have a significant impact on an organization’s competitive strength. Before such a ‘network of experts’ can be used to its full potential however, a number of challenges related to knowledge markets seem to need solutions. About 10 years ago however, we could witness the entry of a new breed of company – calling themselves innovation intermediaries. These companies are built to profit from delivering the usefulness of knowledge networks to client (Seeker) companies. Though the use of such networks and markets have so far been uncommon outside of high-tech fields they are now starting to be seen used by companies in more mature environments.Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the collaboration between SCA (a large Swedish corporation) and the innovation intermediary InnoCentive in order to create a better understanding of what kind of benefits can be derived from the use of an innovation intermediary, and how these benefits are best utilized. We also set out to identify relevant limitations of innomediary use and to seek to better understand how using an innomediary can fit a client company’s higher-order activities such as exploration and exploitation.Completion and Results: Our findings include that SCA are using InnoCentive mainly as a tool to solve highly specific problems and/or problems with a low degree of complexity that they encounter in their everyday activities. The challenges related to knowledge markets, we find, are avoided by keeping problem complexity low and problem modularity high for the problems sent out to the network. In addition, InnoCentive’s business model seems to eliminate costly negotiations between Seekers and Solvers. Using this kind of ‘market solution’ however, we argue, will put bounds on the usefulness of the network and makes it mainly suited as a tool for improving an organization’s exploitation capacity.

▼ The digital sector is often described as rapidly evolving, hence organisations within it need to remain innovative in order to cope with the changes. However, the traditionally closed approach towards innovation has been increasingly criticized. Inbound innovation is an alternative approach described as the purposive pursuit of gaining external knowledge for product enhancement and new product development. This knowledge can be gained by using tools such as innovation contests and creating innovation communities. Through a multiple case study focusing on three companies within the digital sector, this thesis explores a potential connection between how these companies use inbound innovation in regard to the different phases in the organizational life cycle. The data was collected using both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques, and analysed using a cross-case analysis method. This thesis found that the examined organisations, each specified in different phases of the organisational life cycle, uses inbound innovation differently. Furthermore, as the examined organizations progress through the organisational life cycle a shift, from using inbound innovation to optimize execution towards using it to find new growth options, was found.

▼ In nowadays society, organizations are struggling with the practical implementation of ‘distributed innovation’, or the fact that organizations need to reach outside their boundaries to tap into distributed sources of knowledge to enhance their
innovation processes. Within this PhD, we will look at a specific approach, promoted and supported by the European Commission, that tries to facilitate and manage distributed
innovation processes through a Public-Private-People partnership with a central role for the end-user: Living Labs. Following Almirall & Wareham (2011) and Leminen et al. (2014), we define Living Labs as an organized approach (as opposed to an ad hoc approach) to
innovation consisting of real-life experimentation and active user involvement by means of different methods involving multiple stakeholders, as is implied in the Public-Private-People character of Living Labs.
However, there are two main problems associated with these Living Labs. First problem, in terms of Living Lab practice and activity, is that there seem to be too many initiatives, without enough noticeable results or impact. This is linked to the second problem, dealing with Living Labs theory. To this date, there have been a lot of Living Lab publications, but there is no consistency in terms of connection to larger research paradigms and frameworks, and there is a lack of papers with a significant academic impact as well as research clearly illustrating their value.
Therefore, from a theoretical perspective, we have investigated both the
Open and User
Innovation paradigms and demonstrated that Living Labs are an embodiment of both, although there are only few references to these literature streams in the current Living Labs literature. From a practice perspective, we have illustrated that Living Labs are rooted within various European predecessors such as cooperative design, social experiments and ‘digital cities’, but that out of the 345 affiliated members to the European Network of Living Labs, at least 40% is currently inactive.
In order to further evolve Living Labs as a concept and to allow a better conceptualization, we developed a three layered model, consisting of a macro level (the Living Lab constellation), the meso level (consisting of a Living Lab
innovation project) and the micro level (consisting of the different methodological research steps). Moreover, within a multiple case study analysis of 4 Living Lab constellation, 21 Living Lab
innovation projects and 107 methodological research steps, we have been able to demonstrate that the concepts gathered from the
Open Innovation literature could be used to analyze the macro level, whereas the concepts from the User
Innovation literature could be used on the micro level. Through co-creation, both levels merge on the meso level, resulting in useful contributions to the
innovation in development. Therefore, we concluded that Living Labs are able to govern
innovation networks and to structure user participation in concrete
innovation projects.

▼ Chesbrough first coined the term “
open innovation” about 15 years ago. Since then, a growing number of studies have shown that openness to the environment can improve firms’
innovation. However, most of the previous studies have focused on the development of product
innovation through firms’ external search in high-tech organizations in developed countries. Less is known about how firms in emerging economies search for new knowledge from their environment to gain and sustain a competitive position in the market.
In this thesis, by advancing the
open innovation and absorptive capacity literatures, I discuss how firms operating in a traditional sector develop their internal capabilities, performance, and process-related
innovation activities by tapping into outside sources of knowledge. This overall research question entails three related sub-questions, which are examined in three research essays through using a mixed qualitative (16 interviews) and quantitative (171 respondents) methodologies (the essays all use the same data). The essays are self-contained and focus on the same research context (the Iranian automotive industry) and level of analysis (the firm). While these essays use different analytical techniques, drawing from distinct pieces of literature, the common thread of the role of
open innovation links them to the overarching research question.
In the first essay, I argue why some firms are more successful than others in benefitting from external knowledge sources (e.g., suppliers, competitors, and universities). In doing so, I investigate the critical role of potential and realized absorptive capacity in the relationship between firms’ external search and performance. Previous studies on
open innovation have tended to examine absorptive capacity as an unidimensional concept, measuring it using R&D intensity. However, R&D intensity does not capture essential aspects of the complex construct absorptive capacity, and there is value in understanding the organizational mechanisms and routines that influence the process of acquiring knowledge from the environment and, subsequently, the exploitation of this newly-generated knowledge in developing the firm’s performance. The findings indicate that potential and realized absorptive capacity are two distinct capabilities and each having a different impact on a firm’s performance. The findings also suggest that the capability of firms to acquire and assimilate external knowledge (potential absorptive capacity) has a strong relationship with performance.
The second empirical essay explores how firms can develop process
innovation through openness. Despite the importance of process
innovation for firms, to date, there has not been clear evidence for how firms, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), search for new knowledge to develop process
innovation. This essay contributes to the literature by exploring the potential mediating effect of absorptive capacity. More precisely, it aims to investigate the effect that absorptive capacity has on…

While open innovation advantages has been widely emphasized in the literature. Intermediation under its different forms still requires clarity in academic articles and in practice. We therefore reviewed the different forms of intermediation and we attempt to advance the uncovered field of the brokering form. Brokers act as bridge between two sided parties involved, seeker and solver. Involving broker in open innovation processes can be an effective strategy to put in place in order to enhance absorptive capacity by lowering inadequate and time consuming…

▼ Open Source Hardware (OSHW) is a concept where hardware designs are shared for everyone to use, modify and build upon. This have become a widespread phenomenon in the microcontroller industry and created an ecosystem where users and companies produce various “derivatives” or alternative designs based on existing OSHW. This research explores this phenomenon of derivative development between users and producers and how this affects innovation, by exploring three case studies of user developed derivatives and interviews with producers and various people with OSHW background. This thesis found that this ecosystem to be dependent on Open Source and leverages the interest of users motivation to innovate and producer support. Furthermore, eight different factor were discovered that derivative development affecting innovation. (1) <em>Openness & Transparency </em>allows the user to innovate without fearing consequences of IP infringement and establishing trust. The transparency also increases the chances for the users to become innovators, as it facilitates the understanding of products, through the documentations and information sharing. (2) Support from producers facilitates users’ ability to design and innovate and was found crucial for the emergence of derivative designs. (3) Amplified Motivation through personal interest has a high impact in the innovation of open microcontrollers. (4) Market diffusion through low-cost ways of sharing and diffusing designs. (5) Market expansion increasing the number of derivative development can affect the resources used by producers in their development process. (6) Product improvements are affected, because of the vast feedback provided by the community, which can lead to through the discovery of usage in fields, product functionality. This increases the quality of the product and allows OSHW producers to stay competitive. (7) Collaboration can affect innovation by the collaborations with derivative projects and businesses. (8) Brand and Marketing is affecting by the number of users that use producers’ products for user-innovators development of derivative designs.

▼ Since the concept of open innovation was put forward by Chesbrough (2003), many researchers focus on open innovation in large enterprises. There is a research gap in how open innovation is implemented in SMEs, specially in Chinese companies. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the motives and challenges of manufacturing SMEs in China to implement onpen innovation. The study is based on analysis of scientific literature and four case studies of manufacturing SMEs. The empirical data were collected by semi-structure interviews and a survey. Overall, collsboration with external partners was found to be good for improving innovation performances in the studies companies. And also, four motives were found, which were forming innovation networks, cooperating with external innovation sources, importing advanced technologies, and driving and motivating innvation processes. Meanwhile, four main challenges were found lack of trust in collaboration, disability for transforming external knowledge to internal knowledge, low support from government, and barriers to overcom intellectual property disputes. At last, the authors suggest that manufacturing SMEs in China could collaborate with each other more, and improve the knowledge of intellectual property as well.

▼ Open innovation has been widely debated in management literature. However, little attention has been given to how small and medium sized enterprises manage to open up their innovation process. Consequently, various questions remain unanswered. In particular, we want to shed light on the following issue: how small and medium-sized enterprises manage organizational changes in their journey from closed to open innovation. A literature review examines how small and medium-sized enterprises open up their innovation process based on nine perspectives. Then, the reference framework addresses the organizational changes embedded in evolving from closed to open innovation. In this sense, we use acknowledged concepts on organizational change research to carry out an in depth-case study on a small and medium-sized enterprise evolving in the sports equipment industry. The results demonstrate that, in its journey from closed to open innovation, the small and medium-sized enterprise has had to stimulate and to manage changes to four company’s dimensions i.e. corporate culture, networking, organizational structure, and knowledge management systems. The paper concludes by highlighting the diverse organizational changes undertaken by the company on these four dimensions. Based on this paper’s conclusion, managerial implications and discussion for future research are drawn.

▼ City councils produce large amounts of data. As this data becomes available, and as information and communication technology capabilities are in place to manage and exploit huge amount of data, open government data is seen as becoming more and more valuable in several contexts. Information Systems (IS) research on open data has been primarily focused on its contribution to e-government inquiries, government transparency, and open government. Recently, open data has been explored as a catalyst for service innovation as a consequence of claims around the potential of such initiatives in terms of additional value that can be injected into the worldwide economy. Subsequently, there is an active open data services academic conversation among IS researchers. Notwithstanding this, the evidence of impacts of open data adoption is largely scattered and anecdotal. A systematic literature review study highlighted the underexplored users’ perspective within this field. On the other hand, previous research demonstrates that existing IS adoption theories should be extended as currently “a large part of the variance in the use of open data technologies is not yet explained” (Zuiderwijk et al. 2015, p.437). To address these gaps, an interpretive multiple case study was carried out to explore the factors that influence the adoption of open data for commercial service innovation in cities. In particular, factors influencing this process were inductively derived from the in-depth investigation of three organizations that achieved sustained adoption of open data for the delivery of commercial services across different cities and industries.
This research contributes to the IS open data services debate by proposing a model of factors perceived by open data services businesses as the most relevant in explaining adoption of open government data for commercial service innovation in cities. Adopting an inductive reasoning approach through qualitative methods enabled the generation of thick descriptions that were extracted, clustered, defined, and validated for each component of the model. This approach was critical to capture the complexity of the open data ecosystem perceived by those re-using this data.
With respect to IS adoption theories, by positioning the cross-case findings within those theoretical elements defined in the literature as predicting adoption of IS, a new enriched model has been formulated and is proposed as a contribution to this theoretical debate. Furthermore, this research demonstrates the suitability of interpretive multiple case study research to inductively generate knowledge in this field.
I expect that the findings of this study will be leveraged for stimulating and encouraging successful use of open data, therefore increasing the value of this source as a catalyst for service innovation. Recommendations to city councils are also proposed from the findings of this research.

▼ As an extension to the research on “
Open Innovation”, this thesis, based on an empirical study of university spin-offs (USOs), intends to make some contributions to the increasing understanding of “openness”, not only for micro and small size firms, but also in another context other than U.S.. Moreover, instead of analyzing from a traditional firm-level perspective, the study approaches the topic by emphasizing the role of the firm’s external and geographical context in shaping the flows of knowledge that the firm can act on. Therefore, the following research questions are brought to the fore, aiming to shed some light on regional policy making: How does the concept of “
Open Innovation” apply in the background of USOs in terms of their external contexts, to what extent are these firms
open, and what factors will influence their openness? To initiate the study, the most urgent question ahead is to quantify the intangible concept of openness. Thanks to the magic of mathematics, different dimensions of openness are drawn from the literature, including external knowledge breadth, depth, capacity and diversity. External knowledge breadth indicates the number of types of information and knowledge a firm can access, while external knowledge depth is related to the tie strength between the firm and its various partners. External knowledge capacity denotes the “size” of the external knowledge pool, constructed by both breadth and depth. And external knowledge diversity is about the heterogeneity of partners’ social backgrounds in the knowledge pool, while also taking into account the spatial orientation of the firm. These dimensions are framed as “Openness Index”, and virtually constitute an external knowledge pool that firms “reside in”. Furthermore, influencing factors, basically enabling and strategic intention factors are extracted to reveal the power of influence on different characteristics of openness. Results from multiple regression analysis show that: 1) spin-offs in a less urbanized area (Trondheim instead of Delft) tend (or are forced) to be more
open in diversity, so do older and larger firms; 2) although larger size firms receive more local supports, they generally have a smaller external knowledge capacity; 3) a founding team with a deep industrial experience may be reluctant to explore the capacity of external knowledge and receive supports, whereas a broader experience may lead to a higher diversity of the firm; 4) a prospector strategy (a competitive strategy that emphasizes product/service
innovation and protection of that
innovation) may stimulate the firm to become more
open in diversity and receive more helps locally; and 5) a high ambition level of the firm generally benefits its openness both in capacity and diversity consistently. Remarkably, according to the test of hypotheses, probably the importance of “market space” has been underestimated, which may play a significant role in such a turbulent and rapid-changing environment that (high-tech) spin-offs pertain to. To move a step forward, the…

▼ Sulfones are useful bioisosteres in drug discovery, and have an unusual ability to engage in binding with both polar and nonpolar regions of target proteins. Despite this, they have seen limited use in drug-screening campaigns, compared with other functional groups. With the goal of generating a library of bicyclo[3.2.1]sulfone-containing molecules to probe biological function, a tandem 1,2-addition/anionic oxy-Cope/1,2-addition reaction proceeding from 3-sulfolene and discovered by previous members of our group was used to prepare highly substituted scaffolds for diversification. Functional group manipulations on this scaffold were partially successful, but ultimately provided limited scope for exploring three-dimensional space.
Moving to a less-substituted bicyclo[3.2.1]sulfone scaffold that could be accessed using methodology developed by the Chou group, it was found that a greater range of chemical diversification could be achieved. Using both substrate-directed methods and intrinsic functional group reactivity, about 70% of the skeletal framework was functionalized with high levels of regioselectivity and (in some cases) good levels of diastereoselectivity.
Chemoinformatic analysis was performed on our collection of synthesized bicyclo[3.2.1]sulfone-containing molecules, and diverse molecular descriptors were obtained. Collaborations were established with industrial partners and non-profit institutions for the purpose of determining biological properties in medicinally relevant areas. Significantly, each of these partners joined the project with therapeutic expertise in a different field (oncology, neurodegenerative diseases, antimicrobial agents, and skin inflammation), thereby maximizing the chances of finding useful lead compounds for future development. Preliminary biological screening data were obtained, which suggest future potential for sulfone-containing conformationally restricted small molecules to be impactful in therapeutic development.

▼ Recent years have seen a renewed focus on the
importance of the manufacturing sector to the future growth of the
UK economy. Most critically perhaps, governance studies have linked
the UK’s strength in manufacturing to its ability to innovate.
However, these studies also imply that to be more competitive, UK
manufacturers must develop new products and processes across both
emerging and established industries, availing themselves of new
knowledge and solutions. This renewed emphasis on
innovation
requires effective engagement with a variety of actors and firms in
the local, national, and global economy. Adding complexity,
following Brexit, manufacturers will still have to outsource
business activities and rely on existing EU suppliers and customers
to help to drive
innovation. Thus, in this unstable new situation,
to be successful in creating novel products and services will
require organisations to cultivate strong relationships. Therefore,
this thesis examines how and when manufacturing firms can engage
stakeholders more effectively across the
innovation funnel,
uncovering how those relationships affect development and
decision-making and how they define courses of action and creative
output. To this end, an ethnographic study was conducted at a
manufacturing company in the UK that decided to make its
innovation
activities collaborative to develop a novel quality-inspection
technology and new strategic framework. The underlying processes of
engagement are understood under the framework of AT, through which
the study offers a thorough analysis of how engagement evolves in
practice, when this work is effective, and what consequences the
promoted relationships have on stakeholders’ creativity and
performance. As a result, this thesis establishes a stronger link
between stakeholder engagement and
open innovation discipline. It
demonstrates also that for stakeholders to be meaningfully involved
in
innovation processes, they must first disengage from the norms,
places, and situations that hinder their concentration and
creativity. Drawing upon its analysis, this paper proposes for
professionals a framework that can be applied to organise the
engagement process in an
open innovation context. Finally, thesis
suggests that scholars investigate diverse industries and how
organisations can tie stakeholder engagement to
innovation
strategies that, as the results explain, remain on periphery of
manufacturers’ organizational activities.

▼ This study examines the factors that influence the creation, purchase, and selection of free instructional technology. Specifically, this study uses the RIPPLES Model to examine the perceptions and reflections of instructional technology directors and staff members with regard to the Resources, Infrastructure, People, Policies, Learning, Evaluation, and Support available to instructional technology creation, purchasing, selection, and implementation at their institutions. Thirteen participants at seven small, residential liberal arts colleges and universities in the United States were located using peer nomination technique. The higher education instructional technology community was asked to nominate instructional technology staff members at institutions that were exemplars of building home grown instructional technology tools, purchasing instructional technology tools, implementing open source instructional technology tools, or utilizing free web-based instructional technology tools. The findings are based on interviews of approximately one hour with each of the thirteen participants. An interview protocol based on a previous interview protocol developed by Dr. Daniel Surry, the creator of the RIPPLES Model, was utilized. Creswell's three-step data analysis process was utilized to find categories of responses related to decision-making regarding instructional technology from the perspective of instructional technology directors and staff members are discussed. The Resources, People, Policies, and Evaluation dimensions of the RIPPLES Model provided the most salient findings about organizational decision making regarding instructional technology. The findings of the study provide small, residential liberal arts institutions with very useful comparison cases as they are considering the types of instructional technologies to explore and implement. The study also provides valuable information about how instructional technology staff groups are structured and the effects of staffing models on interactions with faculty members.

▼ The research field of
Open Innovation (OI) has grown exponentially since
Chesbrough coined the term in 2003. But after more than a decade of research,
some essential areas of research in the OI literature, such as OI practices and
the context factors relevant to their implementation, are still fragmented and
uncompleted, as noted in the reviews of the OI literature in recent years. In this
thesis, I aim to enrich the literature on OI by analysing two specific issues:
taxonomy of OI practices; and identifying the relevant context factors that
most influence in the implementation of OI practices.
Accordingly, the first objective of this research is to conduct a comprehensive
literature review of OI practices, which is necessary in order to clarify the
concept and propose more precise terminology. This review includes the
identification of the different typologies of OI practices defined in the literature
and the dimensions used by authors to describe these practices. Secondly, we
propose the identification, also based on the literature review methodology, of
the internal and external factors that influence the implementation of these
practices and the analysis of their relation with each OI practice typology. Then,
according to the conclusions of the literature review, we propose a theoretical
framework for establishing relations among different typologies of OI practices
and the internal and external factors (firm-specific and contextual) relevant for
their implementation. The empirical work of this thesis consists of an
experimental contrast of the proposed theoretical framework, particularized for
OI practices in SMEs in the automotive industry. This empirical work includes
two steps, the first is a multiple case study of SMEs in the automotive sector
and the second one is a retrospective case study of an SME from the
automotive sector that has successfully implemented OI practices over a long
period of time.
From the academic point of view, this thesis contributes to the OI literature
with two main results. The first one is a classification of OI practices typologies,
according to their main dimensions, which helps to establish a taxonomy in this
research stream. The second one is a theoretical framework for establishing
relations among different typologies of OI practices and context factors. From the managerial point of view, the empirical research developed in this
thesis, also yields some interesting results. In relation to OI practices typologies,
we have shown that the studied SMEs have implemented the following OI
practices typologies, which are identified in the theoretical framework:
Innovation contest, Inward licensing of IP, Joined development, Joint venture,
Lead user method, Outsourcing R&D, Outwards licensing of IP and Regional
innovation clusters. Moreover, some specific typologies of these practices are
more commonly used by the SMEs from the sample, such as Joined
development. When using the theoretical framework developed in the
theoretical section to look…
