▼ It is these days very consistent for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to participate in open innovation activities to battle the internal and external difficulties they are confronting, for example, less resources for R&D, constrained financial resources and specialized abilities, fewer production facilities and distribution channels and so on. Studies demonstrate that open innovation encountered a quick increase in recent years. As of late researchers have additionally indicated distinct interest in research on SMEs whereas in past research large companies were the focus. The focus of the thesis is to highlight how SMEs solve their shortage of scare resources by engaging into open innovation activities. Two SMEs from various regions, to be specific Pakistan and the United Kingdom, were chosen as research cases for the thesis. Interviews have been utilized as a primary method for data collection. Despite of certain limitations, the research was successfully concluded with imperative findings with the suggestions and practices of open innovation utilized by SMEs. Finding from the thesis demonstrate that entrepreneurs in view of their individual attributes perceived the value of the opportunity and well-spoken the thought into a successful product. Their most vital entrepreneurial qualities are quick basic leadership, risk taking capacity and innovativeness in discovering answers for issues. Both entrepreneurs were effective in sorting out and managing the open innovation process and overwhelm the liabilities of being small. In both cases, entrepreneurs must have utilized external resources to satisfy the absence of their internal resources such as technology exploration innovation strategy and through building and dealing with their innovation network. The result of the research demonstrates that the achievement of the entrepreneurs of how an entrepreneur deals with the business is not simply based on his aptitudes and abilities, however it additionally relies upon the type of innovation procedure which entrepreneurs incorporates within the organization. While organizing and managing the open innovation process there were many difficulties that both entrepreneurs needed to face to make their SMEs successful. Although few differences emerge when the both CEO’s adopted open innovation activities.

L’open source transforme les façons dont les entreprises créent et s’approprient de la valeur. Les entreprises qui décident d’adopter une stratégie open source acceptent d’ouvrir leur processus d’innovation, d’être en interaction renforcée avec les clients et les utilisateurs, de partager les résultats de l’innovation avec le plus grand nombre, sans discrimination et ce, de manière souvent gratuite. Ces éléments participent à changer la manière dont les entreprises font des affaires. Pour appréhender ces changements, nous adoptons deux perspectives différentes mais complémentaires. Dans un premier temps, nous utilisons le concept de business model pour comprendre comment les porteurs de projets open source parviennent à articuler des degrés différents d’ouverture de l’innovation avec des formes types de valorisation. Nous approchons la création et l’appropriation de valeurs de ces acteurs de façon absolue, avec une réflexion axée sur le niveau du projet. Dans un second temps, nous allons plus en amont de l’open source et observons la manière dont des contributeurs concurrents d’une même communauté de coopération parviennent à créer et à s’approprier de la valeur. Nous mobilisons pour cela le concept de coopétition et adoptons une vision plus relative de la création et de l’appropriation avec une réflexion axée sur le niveau inter-organisationnel. Nous adoptons une méthodologie de recherche mixte avec une première étude quantitative qui nous permet de dégager trois business models de projets open source types. À partir de ces trois catégories, nous sélectionnons les cas de notre étude qualitative qui porte sur la coopétition au sein des communautés open source. Nos résultats permettent de qualifier trois types de business models de projets : les projets d’exploration, d’expertise et d’optimisation. Nous montrons ensuite comment les choix effectués par les porteurs de projets dans le cadre de ces business models agissent sur la situation coopétitive des entreprises qui vont venir contribuer aux communautés de ces mêmes projets. Nous décrivons une situation de coopétition dans laquelle la création de valeur entre coopétiteurs est intermédiée par le porteur de projet. Nous montrons que cette création de valeur est extensive dans la mesure où les coopétiteurs ne peuvent choisir avec quelles entreprises elles vont coopérer. Surtout, nous soulignons que l’ouverture de l’innovation, la non-discrimination et la gratuité n’altèrent en rien les capacités d’appropriation des coopétiteurs. Cette appropriation est simplement détournée sur des objets de valeurs que nous qualifions précisément. Finalement, nos résultats permettent de montrer que l'open source est propice à l’instauration de situations coopétitives et que les entreprises qui s’y engagent peuvent y trouver de nombreux bénéfices.

▼ Pour préserver leur modèle économique, les entreprises ont longtemps protégé leurs processus d’innovation par des brevets. L’« open source hardware » est, au contraire, un processus collaboratif de développement de produits, où les plans de conception et « secrets » de fabrication sont accessibles à tous. La barrière entre concepteurs et consommateurs s’estompe, grâce aux outils de fabrication digitale, comme les imprimantes 3D ou les découpeuses lasers accessibles via des Fab Labs ou des Maker Spaces permettant aux citoyens de créer et de tester des produits beaucoup plus facilement. Partant d’un phénomène isolé, il existe maintenant 1200 Fab Labs dans 100 différents pays organisés en réseau, « the Fab City Network », dont le but est d’aider les villes à produire 50% des ressources qu’elles consomment d’ici quarante ans.Dans ce contexte, construire un drone pour dépolluer les océans, une ruche connectée, ou un filtre à eau en « Open Source Hardware » (OSH) vise à créer des solutions de manière plus rapide, efficace et à moindre coût. De plus, ces innovations sont gardées volontairement libres de droit. Elles constituent un « bien commun digital », une réserve de connaissances disponible sur Internet via des plateformes numériques. Selon Elinor Ostrom, qui a reçu le prix Nobel d’économie en 2009 « le défi de la génération actuelle est de garder les voies d’accès aux connaissances ouvertes ». Sans atteindre le succès des initiatives en Open Source dans le secteur des logiciels informatiques, ces initiatives n’ont cessé de se propager.Or, comment développer un modèle économique durable avec des innovations qui ont été co-construites et sont partageables par tous ? Nos questions de recherche sont les suivantes : 1) comment rentabiliser la création de valeur produite en OSH ? ; 2) comment étendre cette création de valeur à un ensemble de parties prenantes ? 3) dans le contexte de l’OSH quels sont les facteurs d’adhésions autour de ces modèles économiques ?L’OSH ne s'agit pas d'un phénomène propre à un seul secteur, entreprise ou territoire mais une transformation beaucoup plus globale. Pour chercher à comprendre les conditions nécessaires à la survie et à la montée en puissance de ce phénomène, nous avons mené une étude qualitative multiniveaux qui nous permettait d’étudier les niveaux communautaires, d’entreprise, et d’écosystème territorial, à la fois.La collection de données s’est faite en trois étapes successives. Dans un premier temps, des entretiens qualitatifs ont été menés auprès de vingt-trois initiatives issues de « l’Observatoire de l’Open Source Hardware ». Celles-ci devaient, bien entendu, correspondre à nos critères de recherche, à savoir le développement de produits mécatroniques ou textiles complexes et étiquetés ouverts par leur communauté. ▼ The open business model has attracted much attention from academia and industries alike. It implies many new opportunities for product innovatiopn to transend traditional boundaries and leaverage diverse capabilitied and resources by coherently integrating external partners into the design and manufacturing processes. Such trends lead to the decentralization of the product fulfillment process. Particularly, the open business model offers the opportunities for the small and medium enterprises to fulfill various customer needs in an innovative crowdsourcing manner. While open design and manufacturing sounds appealing, research on formal formulation of crowdsourcing product fulfillment has been very limited. The underlying challenge for adoption and reversion of the open business strategy is the difficulty in justify the population dynamics of crowdsourcing. This thesis puts forward collaborative-crowdsourcing product fulfillment (C2PF) for open design and manufacturing. This work proposes a new product fulfillment workflow to accommodate the decentralized yet collaborative product fulfillment process. The research focus is geared towards the instantiation of the open design and manufacturing with a highly individualized dental braces fulfillment process as a case study. The thesis investigates the fundamental issues underpinning open design and manufacturing. A game-theoretic decision framework is proposed to deal with such critical issues as (1) group decision-making in the product fulfillment processes, (2) dynamics analysis of the external partners’ population, and (3) collaboration-negotiation contracting scheme based on an information contents measure. Since the boundaries are opened to the external partners, the product fulfillment decision-making processes must be reengineered to adapt the collaborative-crowdsourcing process. The workflow of C2PF is established. The supply contracting mechanism is identified as the key pillars to support the product fulfillment flow. In addition, to model the population dynamics of the partners, an evolutionary competition-cooperation game theoretic model is established. The relationships among participation fraction of the partners, the balance of inter-domain capacity, and income and distribution have been established. It reveals a competition-cooperation relationship between the external partners and a co-evolutionary characteristic of the entire population. This model provides a guideline for the management of the open enterprise, with considering of the long-time prosperity. Moreover, to achieve the collaborative crowdsourcing, a generalized supply contracting evaluation mechanism has been proposed. This mechanism supports the collaborative-negotiation from the bidding perspective. The evaluation mechanism handles the uncertainty, aggregates multi-criteria evaluation results and ensures the satisfaction of the requirements. Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the emergence of ecosystemic business models. Ecosystemic thinking has surfaced as a concept to explain the complexity and interconnected nature of modern business. It reflects a fundamental change in the way we view innovations in particular. Innovations are no longer considered to rise within organizational boundaries alone. Modern business is characterized by a diversity of innovation stakeholders from private and public backgrounds, from large organizations to users and citizens. To further the understanding on the research phenomenon of ecosystemic business models, this study relies on two streams of research: Open innovation and business model research. These fields of academic literature mirror well the paradigmatic shift on how the dynamism and change of modern, interconnected business context impacts innovations, value creation and capture and subsequent competitive advantage. The empirical part of this study has been conducted as qualitative case studies. Also conceptual frameworks have been based on empirical data. Drawing from ecosystem analogy, this study investigates different types of ecosystemic contexts, namely that of business ecosystems and innovation ecosystems, in order to determine not only how and why business models emerge, but also how they develop and transform in such a context. An ecosystemic view on business models emphasizes that value co-creation and co-capture need to be steered by a common motive based on mutually connected opportunities and collective value proposition. This research finds that in a complex, multileveled configuration of ecosystems, striving for synergy within the ecosystem is a prerequisite for successful building of ecosystemic value and competitive advantage as a whole. The results of the study indicate that business models are valid not only at organizational level but at the ecosystemic level as well, as ecosystem synergy and successful orchestration can be achieved through utilizing the ecosystemic business model.

Tiivistelmä Tässä tutkimuksessa esitellään ekosysteemisten liiketoimintamallien käsite ja tarkastellaan ekosysteemisten liiketoimintamallien syntyä. Liiketoimintakontekstin monimutkaisuutta ja monitahoisuutta selitetään yhä useammin ekosysteemisen ajattelun avulla. Innovaatioiden ei nähdä syntyvän enää vain yritysten rajojen sisällä, vaan moderniin liiketoimintakontekstiin kuuluu monia eri sidosryhmiä yksityisistä julkisiin toimijoihin, suuryrityksistä yksittäisiin kuluttajiin ja kansalaisiin. Lisätäkseen ymmärrystä ekosysteemisistä liiketoimintamalleista, tämä tutkimus nojaa kahteen tutkimusalueeseen; avoimeen innovaatioon ja liiketoimintamalleihin. ▼ This thesis, Utilising Open Educational Resources in support of curriculum transformation at Africa Nazarene University: A participatory action research approach, derives from a multi-year project implemented by OER Africa, and funded by the Hewlett Foundation, to explore the potential of Open Educational Resources (OER) in support of pedagogic transformation in African universities. The project involves four institutions: Africa Nazarene University (ANU) in Kenya, the Open University of Tanzania (OUT), and the Universities of Pretoria and the Free State (UP and UFS) in South Africa. This study centred on ANU only in the period 2013 to 2016, with a focus on the period 2015-2016, and was timed to inform ANU’s new strategic planning process from 2017. The wider project adopted a participatory action research process in its engagement with the four core institutions. Within this over-arching project methodology, this study made use of an analytical autoethnographic approach to capture and analyse data and to make recommendations, to acknowledge the researcher’s dual role as both a co-participant and an institutional project lead. The approach was informed primarily by hermeneutics and systems thinking and involved multiple in-country engagements with ANU and the triangulation of information derived from document review, observation and iterative focus group discussions and individual interviews. An OER Maturity Index and Planning Tool was also developed and used to inform planning and reflection and to provide a barometer of changing attitudes and activities regarding engagement with OER. Initially the engagement focused on developing a supportive policy and capacity-building environment for individuals to integrate OER into specific Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) courses and to publish revised course materials under an open licence. However, as the initiative progressed, it became apparent that there was need to revisit the institution’s overall business model considering increased competition, new regulatory requirements and a growing demand from students for more flexible forms of provision. In fact, the key finding of this study is the suggestion that engagement with OER is unlikely to move from being an individual to an institutional focus unless such engagement is aligned with the overall vision, mission and business model of the university. ▼ Distance education as delivery mode is currently attracting more and more learners globally who want to improve their skills and qualifications. This is necessitated by especially the limited components of existing contact universities, financial expenditure and working learners. The presenting of open distance learning by existing contact universities in South Africa is relatively unknown. Consequently the aim of this study is also to investigate a model for Open Distance Learning used at the NWU, an existing contact university. In order to achieve this aim, several other aims were set as well. The most important findings of these aims are subsequently summarized. Aim one was to determine how distance education, open distance learning and e-learning have been conceptualized in the literature. It emerges clearly from the literature that various barriers and challenges accompany the implementation and delivery of distance and open distance learning program. These barriers particularly concern matters such as academic, cultural and technical aspects like the student’s experience, the position of the lecturer regarding the program, the design of the program, the fact that development in technology is constantly kept in mind and kept up with, as well as problems with financial aspects. The second aim intended to compare open distance learning in developed and developing countries as far as contact classes and e-learning are concerned, in order to establish the best practices for a suitable management model. The open distance learning models of twelve universities were examined separately and compared to one another. From these comparisons the following components of open distance learning were indentified which would be applicable to both developing and developed countries: (i) the use of traditional paper-based study material; (ii) the use of various forms of technology; (iii) the use of e-learning, and (iv) voluntary supporting contact classes. From the literature it has been shown that, despite limited infrastructure, poverty, illiteracy and geographical isolation, e-learning and m-learning are increasingly implemented as delivery modes in open distance learning programmes in developing as well as developed countries. Aim three was to establish, from within the literature, the nature of management models with specific reference to the innovations within managing business models in the context of open distance learning. Firstly variables which play a role in new business models were considered. Secondly the levels according to which the innovation of new models should take place were investigated, and also how these could possibly be implemented within the NWU, as well as the principles applicable to the innovation and implementing of a new model from an existing mother company. Factors which could play a part in the plans to present distance learning programs were also considered, whether these would imply a new distance education unit or the continued presentation of such programs.…

The entrepreneurs behind newly formed companies in Sweden as well as small medium-sized enterprises and start-ups are increasingly getting involved in open innovation or exploring its practices. They do this in order to develop innovative products and services. SMEs and start-ups are collaborating with external stakeholders, such as enterprise service providers, industrial suppliers, research institutions or universities, to either bring their innovative products and solutions to the market faster or to stay ahead of the game of competitions. By engaging in open innovation practices, the different stakeholders involved are able to combine human capital, in addition with a collection of available resources. By reading further into this thesis research, a typical exploration of resources can be noticed spanning from hardware to software and from soft skills to hard skills, thus resulting to innovative outcomes (product and services). This thesis research will investigate the benefits Swedish start-ups and small-medium-sized enterprises can gain from open innovation. There are several studies on large companies that use open innovation to generate additional values. Accordingly, external learning is very important in small and medium-size enterprises for growth. However, there are fewer studies on startups and SMEs, in terms of open innovation; therefore, this research study aims to address this gap. SMEs and open innovation are becoming very important in the local Swedish and global knowledge-based economy. In the past Sweden’s economy, SME played an important role and in the future SMEs are estimated to be more important, due to the rapid technology development and fast-growing services sector. An important contributing fact to the local economy is that 9 out 10 new jobs during the last twenty years were created within the SME sector in Sweden. Accordingly, this study has highlighted the importance of external learning and its contribution towards improving the innovative performance of small and medium-size enterprises. The findings from all interviews and case study revealed different impact about the importance of open innovation. All companies had their respective motivating reasons to explore external resources, while some could attest the resources helped to verify their assumption. Other SME and companies were collaborating with research institutes, academia in order to complement their innovation process, which ended up being a benefit to all parties involved in open innovation.

▼ Open innovation has been rising in popularity as an alternative to traditional model for organizations to enhance innovation in their products or services. In the past, the innovation processes was time-consuming and costly. It has now become significantly efficient and effective, supported by the advancement of today’s IT such as Internet, Cloud Computing and Big Data. Open innovation has changed the aspect of the innovation source; from closed internal R&D to fully utilization of consumers’ collaboration. Decision to shift towards open innovation strategy has been lying on several areas including motivation, financial direction, and preference of the innovation strategies and business models that fitting the organizational core strategy. This research studied the relation of these areas and its effect; it determined the way IT-organization creates and captures value that were done by opening its product platform. This thesis was conducted to analyze the open innovation approach in an open digital navigation platform, featuring two platforms as case study: Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. The investigation emphasized the utilizing of the open innovation strategy to build its platform where crowdsourcing and open source software as objects highlighted in the research. The data was collected from secondary sources. Research findings suggested that crowdsourcing and open source software strategy are the main strategies of open innovation implemented in IT digital mapping platform to create and capture value. While these strategies have been practiced in both platforms, circumstances (motivation, financial direction, and business strategy) that hovering around the internal aspect of organizations affected the application of those strategies. The implementation results are differ according to preferred business model. The result of this research suggested that a non-profit based organization tends to utilize open innovation to improve the value of their product through consumer collaboration, while a profit based organization adopts open innovation to generate additional pool of revenue through customers’ feedback and input data. The open innovation leads to creation of a new business model as the foundation of innovation.

It is changing the way IT departments used to work in order to get competitive advantages and meet the needs of the global economy. Accenture consulting currently has an advantage because they are developing innovation inside and also bringing innovation from outside to its current offer. However, what is of particular interest in this research is the impact of new technology such as Cloud Computing to Accenture’s Business Model as a consequence of the maturation of the Internet as an IT platform. Accenture is opening its Business Model, using an approach of Open Innovation, accessing external knowledge in order to support their R&D processes. The firm is using both external and internal ideas to develop new technologies to take them faster to the market, according to the studies of Henry Chesbrough. The intention of this thesis is to address the following questions; How Accenture focuses on new markets and new businesses (such as Cloud Computing), as well as their current business (such as SAP)? What kind of innovation process is Accenture BM with SAP, according to the description made by Henry Chesbrough? How Accenture by working on Cloud Computing is moving its BM from type 5 to 6 according to the description made by Chesbrough? To answer these questions an exploratory case study approach was taken with the intention to detect patterns and regularities that will help to precise the answers and capture the impact of Cloud Computing to Accenture technology consulting services. Accenture is passing from a Business Model type 5 where integrates its innovation process connected to its Business Model and where is using IP as a financial asset; to a Business Model type 6 where Accenture is able to change, and is changed by the market, in other words, Accenture is creating a Business Model which is adaptive and where its innovation process identify new Business Models, using its IP as an strategic asset. Even though Cloud Computing is at a nascent stage; to be successful organizations should take small, incremental steps toward this new environment so can obtain early benefits for applicable business situations, and learn how to deal with the associated issues and risks. While cloud computing still has a long way to go before proving its full value, Accenture is moving fast to make it a vital part of its value proposition and its Business Model.

▼ Purpose: Currently little research exists regarding the attitudes of managers towards using social media for innovation processes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that influence managerial attitudes and their willingness to use social media as a tool for generating innovations. Design/methodology/approach: Based on existing literature within the technology acceptance field, a research model has been created. A deductive and quantitative research approach has been employed in order to test the hypotheses on 137 managers from international companies who use social media within their innovation processes. Findings: The results of the linear regression show that three out of six hypotheses could be accepted. Perceived usefulness and subjective norms have an impact on the managers' attitude towards social media in innovation processes. Moreover, the findings reveal that the attitude towards using social media in innovation processes influences the managerial behavior intention. Research limitations/theoretical implications: The research model of this study contributes to the already existing literature. It aims at explaining the managerial attitude towards social media integration into innovation processes, being based on the extended technology acceptance model (TAM2). Research limitations concern the model's application in different contexts for other technologies, the lack of balance of female and male respondents and the concentration on specific industries in which user-driven innovation is highly important. Future research is encouraged to take these factors into consideration. Practical implications: Companies should support their employees’ and managers’ confidence in using social media for innovation processes by reinforcing the managerial perception of social media's usefulness. Managers and employees should be encouraged by external parties to use social media for example by attending workshops and advanced training courses or visiting conferences in order to appreciate its acceptability. Originality/value: The study presents a new research model that investigates managerial attitudes towards social media integration into innovation processes based on the extended Technology Acceptance Model. The association of managerial attitudes, social media, innovation and TAM2 is novel within this field of research.

▼ Business modelling (BM) is being used in commercial organizations of different sizes and industries all over the world as a tool to design, structure and analyse business processes and activities. Hence, advantages of BM can be exploited by public sector institutions (PSIs) as well. Adoption of open source software (OSS) is another phenomenon that started to spread from individual and corporate users to public environment. In Europe, it was successfully done in German municipalities and Swedish police. Moreover, guidelines on OSS public procurement were developed by the group of researchers led by R. A. Ghosh on the base of EU directives on software management. The aim of the current study is to combine two mentioned above tools (BM and OSS adoption) in one practical approach that could be used by municipalities. The main reason for doing this is obvious lack of findings in both theoretical and practical aspects though the subject is being broadly discussed and promoted. The overall purpose of the current research is to design an OSS based business model for Kivos municipalities that can be later generalized to other public organizations, probably even in other countries. The specific feature of this business modelling is that it is created upon value and relationships instead of issues related to money which is more common for BM. The current study is an exploratory and inductive qualitative research where case study was chosen as a research strategy. Data collection was conducted using the following techniques: literature review – for secondary data collection, and communication (interview and survey) – for primary data collection. Theoretical framework includes literature (sources providing both general and specific information related to the subject of interest. All gathered information was interpreted and analysed through the instrumentality of enterprise modelling or simply summarised and discussed verbally. On the base of interpreted results of theoretical and empirical studies desired OSS based business relationships model was designed and described for Kivos municipalities. It is based on value which in particular case implies sharing information, knowledge and experience as well as mutual assistance and reliable interaction between participants of relationships existing in OSS environment.
