▼ Visual information presented in diagrams promotes information processing both in an individual and in collaborative work. Previous literature has identified the role of diagrams in
understanding information processing in a variety of disciplines. In
software engineering, diagrams are a prevalent method involved in process
development: diagrams are used for system comprehension, design of architecture, design and improvement of usability and communication with developers. Free/
Open Source software (FOSS)
development is a highly distributed environment where developers and users share content over multiple sites and
communicate through computer-mediated channels. However, prior research lacks a deep understanding of diagramming practices in OSS. To understand how and why diagramming practices occur in FOSS, we first conducted interviews with nine contributors from a single project, Ubuntu. Next, to generalize our study, we conducted a large-scale survey with contributors from a wide range of FOSS communities as well as follow-up interviews that
provided insights into understanding their diagramming practices. We found that although contributors mostly agree that diagram use has positive effects toward
development, FOSS contributors occasionally are not willing to use them due to a lack of supporting tools outside of the conventions related to FOSS culture. We propose that diagramming practices can support and promote collaboration in FOSS. This thesis is composed of three manuscripts. First, we study diagramming practices in the Ubuntu project. Second, we report diagramming practices, focusing on design-oriented activities in which developers and designers extensively use diagrams in collocated
development. We also investigate whether or not OSS contributors appreciate diagramming practices for design-oriented activities in non-collocated
development. We finally report how and why diagramming practices occur in FOSS communities.

broader perspective Open Source Software is developed in a
collaborative manner and it has created a substantial amount of
software Besides the steep increase in number of volunteers being
actively involved in Open Source Software Development OSSD the
software development procedure is often described as unstructured
and unorganized The Open Source Software concept offers not only
low cost of technology acquisition but also an efficient scheme of
cooperation to exploit such technology The most well known and
successful Open Source Software projects such as Apache Web Server

often found to be better quality than proprietary software it is
still not clear as to what factors contribute either directly or

▼ This thesis investigates the following research questions: (1) What is open source project governance and how can it be conceptualized? (2) What is the relationship between the dimensions of OSS governance and the specific purposes that governance is hypothesized to serve in open source projects? (3) How do the major configurations of governance dimensions affect the performance of open source projects?
Two studies were conducted to answer these questions: an exploratory qualitative study and a survey study. In the qualitative study, we clearly defined, developed, and validated the various dimensions of OSS governance. This allowed for the identification of a limited number of configurations of governance dimensions that most frequently occur in open source projects. We found that a patterning in governance dimensions takes place because dimensions are in fact interdependent. Therefore, only a fraction of the theoretically conceivable configurations of governance dimensions appear to be viable and were observed among a range of open source projects. This provided us with a preliminary understanding of how these dimensions configure to create three distinct configurations of project governance which were labeled as follows: Open Communities, Managed Communities, and Defined Communities.
In the quantitative survey, we first validated these configurations of governance using cluster analysis and then tested the relationships between these configurations (clusters) and the specific purposes that governance is hypothesized to serve in open source projects, namely solve collective action dilemmas, solve coordination problems, and create a climate for project excellence, while assessing their influence on the performance of projects. The results confirmed the presence of three main governance configurations (clusters) and also showed that open source projects that adopt a Defined Community approach to governance were the most successful. In these types of projects, the combination of a tightly managed software development process with a decentralized community management structure was found to create a balance between anarchy and control that allows these projects to benefit from one of the virtues of open source development, the open contribution and participation of a wide variety of talented developers, while avoiding the pitfalls of an uncontrolled and scattered development process.

▼ Open Source software gives users the freedom to copy, modify and redistribute
source code without legal entanglements. The evolution of these
software communities usually depend a lot on how the participating developers and users interact and co-operate with each other. Over the past few years,
open source software have become widely accepted and used, hence making the study of their organization and sustainability a very hot topic. To understand the working philosophy, health, and evolution of any
open source project, one needs to look at a variety of factors like community interaction, strength of connections, recruiting and mortality, support and contribution patterns. Getting, sharing and analyzing
Software Development metrics and information related to
open source projects has thus become important, with many projects and companies looking to do so. The main challenge however is distilling large amounts of data into actionable intelligence. The main idea behind this work is to help communities and others understand contribution patterns in
open source projects through the use of various visualization techniques.

▼ A better understanding of Open Source Innovation in Physical Product (OSIP) might allow project managers to mitigate risks associated with this innovation model and process, while developing the right strategies to maximise OSIP outputs. In the software industry, firms have been highly successful using Open Source Innovation (OSI) strategies. However, OSI in the physical world has not been studied leading to the research question: What advantages and disadvantages do organisations incur from using OSI in physical products? An exploratory research methodology supported by thirteen semi-structured interviews helped us build a seven-theme framework to categorise advantages and disadvantages elements linked with the use of OSIP. In addition, factors impacting advantage and disadvantage elements for firms using OSIP were identified as: „h Degree of openness in OSIP projects; „h Time of release of OSIP in the public domain; „h Use of Open Source Innovation in Software (OSIS) in conjunction with OSIP; „h Project management elements (Project oversight, scope and modularity); „h Firms. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) values; „h Value of the OSIP project to the community. This thesis makes a contribution to the body of innovation theory by identifying advantages and disadvantages elements of OSIP. Then, from a contingency perspective it identifies factors which enhance or decrease advantages, or mitigate/ or increase disadvantages of OSIP. In the end, the research clarifies the understanding of OSI by clearly setting OSIP apart from OSIS. The main practical contribution of this paper is to provide manager with a framework to better understand OSIP as well as providing a model, which identifies contingency factors increasing advantage and decreasing disadvantage. Overall, the research allows managers to make informed decisions about when they can use OSIP and how they can develop strategies to make OSIP a viable proposition. In addition, this paper demonstrates that advantages identified in OSIS cannot all be transferred to OSIP, thus OSIP decisions should not be based upon OSIS knowledge.

U ovoj disertaciji istražena je primena savremenih
metoda softverskog inženjerstva u razvoju softvera otvorenog koda u
oblasti inteligentnih sistema.
aktuelne probleme i specifičnosti razvoja softvera u tim oblastima.
modifikaciju. Predložene metode razvoja odnose se na specifikaciju
zahteva, planiranje razvoja, projektovanje, implementaciju i
dobra praksa. Pored ovog teorijskog i metodološkog doprinosa, kroz
disertaciju su razvijena i konkretna unapređenja izabranog
frejmvorka iz oblasti inteligentnih sistema, koja značajno
unapređuju njegovu praktičnu primenu...

▼ Active participation and collaboration of community members are crucial to the continuation and expansion of
open source software projects. Researchers have recognized the value of community in
open source development and studied various aspects of it including structure of communities, motivations for participation, and collaboration among members. However, the majority of previous work is devoted to active contributors and little is known about newcomers to
open source projects. In an
attempt to bringing more attention to these potential contributors to
open source and
supporting their joining process by enhancing their initial learning experience, we investigated the information needs of those who are considering joining an
open source project as developers and use of
software in fulfilling the needs and providing information that are important to perform
software development/maintenance tasks.
Our controlled experiment has revealed that the tools and resources available from current
open source projects are lacking in providing information that is embedded in
development artifacts such as discussion archives, trackers, and
source code.
Difficulty obtaining such information may have a negative impact on newcomers' motivation on learning and further their engagement in activities. Our investigation of information visualization in support of learning suggests that providing visual
information to newcomers may alleviate the difficulties associated with managing a
large amount of information and enhance their learning experience.

▼ Information Communication Technology has come a long way and is still being adopted
hugely as a way of improving organizations in output as well as improving the quality in
organizations. Open source software (aSS) over time has emerged as an alternative to
commercial and closed-source in many spheres of influence of software usage. ass has
gained and is still gaining substantial attention across the world and more so in the third
world economies. Nevertheless, how and why ass is being adopted and implemented within
organizations in Kenya in particular is not a well understood or a well documented issue. This
research attempts to advance this understanding so that organizations may make better
informed decisions about adoption of information technology and open source software in
future.
A qualitative grounded theory approach is used in order to explore the extent of open source
software adoption by organizations in Kenya as well as the factors facilitating and inhibiting
adoption. Surveys and interviews are used to acquire the extent of usage of open source
software by organizations in Kenya. First, a survey was used to explore and distinguish the
types of open source software products adopted by organizations and the level to which they
have been adopted. Following the survey, semi-structured interviews were conducted with
organizations information communication technology managers in the organizations in order
to attain a deeper understanding of the factors that are assisting or restraining the adoption
and usage of open source software by organizations in the country.
The findings on extend of adoption of open source software showed 60% adoption and 40%
non adoption rate. The results showed that that organizations tend to adopt general purpose
more than domain specific open source software. Results also show that companies prefer
open source software over closed source software due to control over the software and cost as
opposed to benefit factors. Open source and closed source software are at same level of
preference in terms of scalability, reliability, security features, functionality, and integration
of systems. Closed source is preferred over open source software due to quality of support
from vendors, ease of use and fashion trends. A framework describing the adoption of ass in
organizations, based upon these findings is presented to illustrate the factors facilitating and
inhibiting the adoption of ass.

▼ The automotive industry is currently undergoing an incredible amount of change and the challenge of developing advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving systems is not one that can be done by one actor alone. In this context, it is now more relevant than ever for automotive firms to adapt to a more open, collaborative model of software development and the introduction of an open source software (OSS) strategy within the firm will be a critical step in realizing their overall strategic aims.
The aim of the study was to develop a framework or model that explains how automotive firms manage the transition from operational OSS to strategic OSS usage, specifically the development of a contribution framework after establishing a compliance process. While strategic and organizational structure-related decisions are often highly dependent on firm-specific circumstances, the study intends to contribute a framework for firms to engage in strategic open source usage by developing a contribution process which aligns with the firm’s strategic objectives.
Based on a multiple case study on Scania AB and Volvo Cars Corporation, three main factors related to OSS contribution were assessed: design of the contribution process, aspects relevant to software artifact evaluation, and organizational challenges faced while moving to a strategic OS paradigm. The findings of the study suggest that a cross-organizational team consisting of technical, legal and business perspectives be represented in the evaluation of contribution requests and that inner source development methods offer a way for organization to address the challenges in promoting OSS awareness within the company as part of the shift towards a more strategic engagement with OSS.

▼ Context: Open Source Software (OSS) projects are typically the result of collective efforts performed by developers with different backgrounds. Although the quality of developers' contributions should be the only factor influencing the evaluation of the contributions to OSS projects, recent studies have shown that diversity issues affect the acceptance or rejection of their contributions. Objective: This thesis assists this emerging state-of-the-art body on diversity research with the first empirical study that analyzes how perceptible ethnicity relates to the evaluation outcome of the contributions in GitHub. Methodology: We performed a large-scale quantitative analysis of the relationship between developers' perceptible ethnicity and the evaluation of their contributions. We extracted the perceptible ethnicity of developers from their names in GitHub using the tool, Name-Prism, and applied regression modelling of pull request data from GHTorrent and GitHub. Results: We observe that (1) among the developers whose perceptible ethnicity was captured by the tool, only 16.56% of contributors were perceptible as Non-White; (2) contributions from developers perceived as White have the highest acceptance rate; (3) being perceptible as White have a positive, and being perceptible as Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, or Black might \fix{have} a negative influence on the evaluation of the contributions. Conclusion: While we did not observe any conscious bias against any group, our initial analysis leads us to believe that there may exist an unconscious bias against developers with ethnicity perceptible as Non-White. Thus, our findings reinforce the need for further studies on ethnic diversity in software engineering to foster a healthier OSS community.

▼ To increase productivity, application developers are using tools that allow them to create higher quality applications faster. One such set of tools, open-source frameworks, allows application developers to reuse software artifacts and should increase application quality. However, given the vast number of open-source frameworks available, users must be able to differentiate among frameworks and select the one best suited for them. In this study, we expand the taxonomy of open-source frameworks and analyze the impact of the framework's characteristics, technical quality, and social pressure on perceived usefulness and continued framework usage intention. Our findings suggest that understandability and flexibility have a significant impact on perceived ease of use, while perceived usefulness is mainly determined by flexibility and efficiency. Our research can be used to understand what influences developers to continue using frameworks and to improve framework development.

▼ Patch quality may affect software maintenance cost. However, there is a lack of understanding why patches are accepted/rejected. To provide empirical evidence of patch acceptance, we (1) present patch review criteria based on our literature survey and manual patch inspection, (2) show the result of a large scale online survey to understand the opinion of both patch reviewers and submitters, (3) propose patch acceptance prediction features based on the patch review criteria which show reasonable performance.
Software developers submit patches to handle tens or even hundreds of bugs reported daily. However, not all submitted patches can be directly integrated into the codebase, since they might not pass patch review that is adopted in most software projects. As the result of patch review, incoming patches can be rejected or asked for resubmission after improvement. Both scenarios interrupt the workflow of patch writers and reviewers, increase their workload, and potentially delay the general development process. In this paper, we aim to help developers write acceptable patches to avoid patch rejection and resubmission. To this end, we derive a comprehensive list of patch rejection reasons from a manual inspection of 300 rejected Eclipse and Mozilla patches, a large-scale online survey of Eclipse and Mozilla developers, and the literature. We also investigate which patch-rejection reasons are more decisive and which are difficult to judge from the perspective of patch reviewers. Our findings include 1) suboptimal solution and incomplete fix are the most frequent patch-rejection reasons 2) whether a patch introduces new bugs is very important yet very difficult to judge 3) reviewers reject a large patch not solely because of its size, but mainly because of the underlying reasons that induce its large size, such as the involvement of unnecessary changes 4) reviewers consider certain problems to be much more destructive than patch writers expect, such as the inconsistency of documentation in a patch and 5) bad timing of patch submission and a lack of communication with team members can also result in a negative patch review.

▼ peer-reviewed
THERE ARE VARIOUS scenarios for a software development organisation to adopt Open Source Software (OSS). One scenario is the adoption of OSS products in order to integrate them as components into a final
software product. Another scenario is the adoption of OSS development
practices within the confines of an organisation; this is called “Inner
Source”. In both cases, the software product that is developed is used in
component-based software development (CBSD) to build large-scale products. Also, in both cases, such software is developed by a
“community”, or using Raymond’s metaphor, in a “bazaar”. In the first case, the bazaar is external, and in the second case the bazaar is internal to the organisation.
Both scenarios have been reported as providing benefit to organisations. However, little research has been conducted to identify and document the challenges that practitioners may encounter in these two
scenarios. The research in this thesis is divided into two strands, one for
each scenario. The first research strand consists of a systematic identification of
challenges in using OSS in product development. One of the most frequently reported challenges is the evaluation and selection of components. This was followed by an analysis of existing OSS evaluation
methods proposed so far. These methods seem to pay little attention to a product’s software architecture, which has been identified as a critical success factor in CBSD. To gain insight whether or not practitioners are, in fact, interested in architectural knowledge (AK) of an OSS product, an empirical survey was conducted. One of the findings was that practitioners are interested in certain cases in a component’s architectural patterns. Since there exists no guidance to identify architectural patterns (as opposed to design patterns), the thesis proposes a process to guide the task of identifying architectural patterns in an OSS product.
The research continued by investigating the second scenario, which is Inner Source. This strand of research started with an
investigation of challenges at an Inner Source organisation. These challenges were categorised and compared to the challenges identified for the external bazaar. This was followed by a literature-based framework
that an organisation may use to assess its fit with Inner Source. In summary, by identifying and documenting challenges and
needs, and by proposing guidance to practitioners, the contributions of
this thesis support product development with software from the bazaar.

▼ Open source is a concept that encourages access to a producer’s source or raw materials. In
the Information Technology field it means allowing software users to access the
programming code and empowering them alter this code to improve on the performance of
the software. The main benefits that arise from adopting the open source concept in software
development include: cost effectiveness, enhanced system stability, security and flexibility.
In Kenya cyber cafés provide access to internet services to a majority of the population. The
purpose of this study was to evaluate whether cyber café s in Nairobi have adopted open
source software, and the benefits as well as the challenges that have resulted from open
source software. The study incorporated the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)
framework in evaluating the adoption of open source, with perceived ease of use being one of
the variables in the study.
This was a case study covering cyber café s within the Nairobi CBD; with the population data
set comprising of 47 cyber cafés that are listed in Mocality and the Yellow Pages online
directory websites. The data collection was through structured questionnaires administered
using the drop and pick approach. The data was analysed using means and standard deviation
as a measure of variation in responses.
A majority of cyber cafés have adopted open source software especially the browsing
applications and operating systems such as Linux. Price, security and availability were cited
by the respondents as the major benefits resulting from using open source software. The
study recommends that the government develops an open source policy framework to govern
its use, and also advocates for open source to be incorporated in the Information Technology
curriculum especially in public institutions. This will enable users and organizations to fully
exploit the potential of open source software.

▼ Based on collaboration rather than competition, Open Source Software provides a new dynamic in the development and use of software systems. As such it has the potential to make a significant legal, social and economic impact on the industry. While its origins trace back to the start of the software industry, the recent success of the Linux operation system, Apache web server or the Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser provide impetus to the growth of interest in this movement. However, while a number of studies have been conducted on its development, few have provided empirical evidence of its adoption within the South East Asian context. This study aims to investigate factors leading to the adoption of Open Source Software in Singaporean Organisations. The research has found that the adoption of Open Source Software is driven by the perception of a cost advantage. The organisations interviewed have acknowledged cost as being one of their biggest concerns and top priorities. While costs were stated to be of major concern to the organisations, objective measures of cost such as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return on Investment (ROI) were rarely used by the organisations studied. This perception of cost saving is found to be led by industry sources such as publications, conferences and websites. The next significant finding is the need for increased open source software skills in the industry. One of the major drivers of Open Source Software Adoption in the organisations is that they posses pre-existing skills in Open Source Software use. This enables them to better mitigate risk and to lower their training costs. The final principal finding is that Open Source Software appears to be used mainly in systems infrastructure applications. Organisations reported a large degree of satisfaction including increased stability, scalability and cost effectiveness. Issues remain with Open Source Software’s manageability, its quality of support and ease of use.

software open source
Alemanha, a França e a Espanha.
software, desde as vantagens
penetração do
software.
The
open source software has emerged in recent years as a viable alternative to the proprietary
software. In a brief way, the
open source can be said to be every
software which can be used for
any ends, with no restriction of copies or of access to the
source code, it can be used for the
study of its own functioning, for its adaptation according to anyone’s needs, and for the
possibility of disseminating copies of the changes that have been introduced to it. This new
concept has given origin to the appearance of new licenses for
software distribution, which are
more permissive than the proprietary
software licenses.
In the European context, the use of…

Gaussian Conditional
modela nadgledanog učenja (nestrukturnih prediktora) i vezu između
objekata u cilju tačnije predikcije. Glavna pretpostavka ovog
jedan drugom i samim tim vrijednosti njihovih izlaznih varijabli
(nazvan usmjereni GCRF - Directed GCRF).
nestrukturnih prediktora. Rad obuhvata i razvoj softverskog alata

▼ This dissertation survey the application of modern software engineering methods for open source software development in the field of intelligent systems. Main results are a general model of software framework and recommendations for managing open source projects in that field. Framework model and recommendations for the project management were developed and validated in practice through the development of additional features of a selected software framework for neural networks. Selected neural network framework is one of the leading Java open source neural network frameworks. Suggested software development methods are also applicable in other fields of intelligent systems, and they are response to problems and specific requirements in this field. Most problems are due the fact that it is often software for research purposes, that should also be applicable for practical problems, and complexity of the software that also needs to be easy to use and modify. Proposed development methods are related to requirements specification, planning, design, implementation and maintenance. They are given in the form of recommendations that have been proven as a good practice. In addition to these theoretical and methodological contributions, this dissertation also provides practical contribution in the form of new features for one selected framework in the field of intelligent systems, which greatly enhance its practical application.

▼ One of the main challenges that modern software developers face is the coordination of dependent agents such as software projects and other developers. Transparent development environments that make low-level software development activities visible hold much promise for assisting developers in making coordination decisions. However, the wealth of information that transparent environments provide is potentially overwhelming when developers are wading through information from potentially millions of developers and millions of software repositories when making decisions around tasks that require coordination with projects or other developers. Overcoming the risk of overload and better assisting developers in these environments requires a principled understanding of what exactly developers need to know about dependencies to make their decisions. My approach to a principled understanding of how developers use information in transparent environments is to model the process using signaling theory as a theoretical lens. Developers making key coordination decisions often must determine qualities about projects and other developers that are not directly observable. Developers infer these unobservable qualities through interpreting information in their environment as signals and use this judgment about the project or developer to inform their decision. In contrast to current software engineering literature which focuses on technical coordination between modules or within projects such as modularity or task assignment mechanisms, this work aims to understand how developers use signals to information coordination decisions with dependencies such as other projects or developers. Through this understanding of the signaling process, I can create improved signals that more accurately represent desired unobservable qualities. My dissertation work examines the qualities and signals that developers use to inform specific coordination tasks through a series of three empirical studies. The specific key coordination tasks studied are evaluating code contributions, discussing problems around contributions, and evaluating projects. My results suggest that when project managers evaluate code contributions, they prefer social signals over technical signals. When project managers discuss contributions, I found that they attend to political signals regarding influence from stakeholders to prioritize which problems need solutions. I found that developers evaluating projects tend to use signals that are related to how the core team works and the potential utility a project provides. In a fourth study, using signaling theory and findings from the qualities and signals that developers use to evaluate projects, I create and evaluate an improved signal called “supportiveness” for community support in projects. I compare this signal against the current signal that developers use, stars count, and find evidence suggesting that my designed signal is more robust and is a stronger indicator of support. The findings of these studies inform the design of…

▼ In software development it is often crucial that the system implementationfollows the architecture dened through design patterns and a constraint set.In Model-Driven development most artefacts are created using models, butthe architectural design rules is one area where no standard to model therules exists. ArCon, Architecture Conformance Checker, is a tool to checkconformance of architectural design rules on a system model, dened in UML,that implements the system or application. The architectural design rules aredened in a UML model but with a specic meaning, dierent from standardUML, proposed by the authors of ArCon. Within this thesis ArCon wasextended to be able to check models created by the Open-Source modelingtool Papyrus, and integrated as a plugin on the Eclipse platform. The methodused by ArCon, to dene architectural rules, was also given a short evaluationduring the project to get a hint of its potential and future use. The case-studyshowed some problems and potential improvements of the used implementationof ArCon and its supported method.

▼ The promise of reduced costs, increased flexibility, and independence from vendors of proprietary products has convinced organizations worldwide to deploy Open Source Software (OSS) in their production environments and commercial offerings. Therefore, the ability to scale software, seamlessly integrate open source software in products and increase benefits from OSS participation are crucial capabilities. However, the nature of OSS is not entirely compatible with the rigid structures and processes of many large companies and thus successfully managing OSS has proven to be highly difficult. Previous research has shown that many companies have built previous success on ‘closed innovation’ logic and must now move in a highly counterintuitive direction towards an ‘open innovation’ mindset. This creates various strategic and operational challenges which they need to identify and overcome to avoid disruption. Based on the aforementioned, the purpose has been to investigate key patterns in how development and increased use of open source software could affect large IT companies. This is to illustrate the transition between closed innovation to open innovation strategy for software, but also to describe the strategic and operational challenges that come appear thereafter. To create a deeper understanding of this process of change, a single (qualitative) case study by a large Swedish IT company has been carried out. The hope is to be able to contribute to research by presenting general conclusions from the case study where empirical data is linked to contemporary research in the field. In order to be able to generalize based on the empirical data, interviews have been conducted with both doctoral students and professors in the field, but also experts in the business world. Our findings have generated insights concerning the OSS adoption process of Company A. The findings of the study include a 6-step model that describes the adoption process as well as strategic and operational considerations for successful transition towards efficient OSS governance.

▼ Open source software has become a powerful force in the world of computing. While once confined to the domain of technical specialists, people of all types have begun to adopt this
software – from the casual web-surfer who uses Firefox, to the professional web developer who codes in PHP or Python.
People interested in both seeking and receiving information related to an
open source software project are often directed to its mailing lists. Therefore, many newcomers, or “newbies”, will have their first interactions with the project community there. These newbies are a sustaining force for
open source software projects, making it worthwhile to investigate how these interactions play out and affect the newbies’ future participation.
To gain insight into the first experiences newbies have interacting with an
open source software community, we conducted a study of eight mailing lists across four
open source software projects: MediaWiki, GIMP, PostgreSQL, and Subversion. We analyzed the discussion threads initiated by newbies on those lists for information such as poster gender, nationality, politeness, helpfulness, and timeliness of response. Among the most interesting results, we found that newbies were generally treated very well, with nearly 80% receiving replies to their first post. We also found that receiving timely responses, especially within 48 hours of posting, had a positive correlation with that newbie continuing to participate on the mailing list over time. Somewhat surprisingly, we discovered that a newbie’s level of courtesy did not have a significant effect on whether or not that newbie received a reply.

▼ Open Source Software has been all about myths until recently, with many people believing that open source isn't reliable because the open source projects are held by a small group of amateurs in their friend's garage. Such myths have been refuted with the emerging success and increased popularity of open source, but still many considered open source and proprietary software to be enemies, which can never co-exist in the corporate platform. As a result, some firms have decided to stick to their tradition of commercial software development, while new firms, which base their corporate strategy solely on open source, have emerged. The former group of firms has suffered from losing time and money in fixing the errors and bugs in the software, whereas the latter group has found difficulties in finding financial support and market share in competition among the former group.
Neither group has found absolute success in their business, as result a compromise model has emerged in the software industry, which resulted in a third group of firms that work neither with pure open source model nor with pure proprietary models, but instead with “hybrid” business models which allows integration of these so-called two enemies. Such firms have overcome the pitfalls of both approaches, while combining the benefits of them. The growing success of open-source integration attracted further public attention on the potential importance of open-source software (OSS). Indeed, major large commercial IT companies have started to integrate open-source software into their core strategies. Despite the widespread doubts and resistance during the early stages of open source revolution, there has recently been a “change of perception” in the software development industry towards incorporating open source strategies into their business models.
This master thesis investigates the open source software scene in Sweden by examining Swedish firms that develop software products either based on open source components (hybrid model) or just open source products (pure open source model). After analyzing the market based on the business models of these firms, further details of the open source strategies pursued by these firms have been analyzed. Our study then finalizes the investigation with an analysis of the open source development scene in Sweden, which we use to determine the characteristics of the software industry in Sweden.
Our conclusions reveal that open source strategy shares most of its components with innovation strategy (with some components found to be specific to open source strategy only), confirming the link between open source software and innovation. Therefore, firms that work with open source software have to pay attention to innovation and form an appropriate innovation and open source strategy if they want to be successful in the software industry.

▼ This research study looks at digital academic space, which is defined here as web-based digitally mediated artifacts produced by universities and their members. Open source software projects and the Open Access movement play large roles within digital academic space, not only because of their strong historical academic roots, but also because these projects are growing in prevalence in many universities. Framed by theories from the field of higher education and media studies, this research study is an analysis of the dynamics and effects of one open source software project that produces Open Access electronic journals. The software system, called the Open Journal Systems (OJS), originally developed by an education professor from a Canadian university, has been adopted by thousands of universities world- wide to publish electronic peer reviewed academic journals. OJS users distributed at universities throughout the world have contributed software code back to the system, by for example, creating translation modules enabling users to publish journals in a range of languages thus adding an interesting global dimension to the project. Based on interviews with the OJS software developers, administrators, and users, as well as a range of material culled from online, this situational analysis of the OJS sketches out the conditions, dynamics, discourses and professional identities that form the basis of an emerging phenomenon within universities that is named here the digitally mediated open research project (DMORP

▼ This thesis reports on a pilot project which was
developed to meet the needs of specific research groups for a
collaborative workspace. The main components of the project include
a digital library, online discussion forum, adaptive hypermedia
engine and a statement database. Such a system was deemed necessary
because of today's global network of researchers who are divided by
both location and time. The need therefore exists for a system
which allows researchers to work on a project without the need to
be in the same physical location. Such a system is called an online
collaborative workspace. An online collaborative workspace allows
researchers to work together on projects by providing various means
of sharing information and resources. The main research question
addressed in this study is: What are the user requirements and
design specifications of an online collaborative workspace
developed in
open source software? In order to answer this main
question, the following sub-questions need to be addressed: What
are the main design principles and functionalities of such a
collaborative workspace? How can they be integrated in developing
a modular
open source framework? To what extent can such a
framework be customised for implementation in new or existing
collaborative projects? What are the usability requirements of
such an online collaborative workspace and how should one go about
to test the usability of such a framework? Before being able to
accurately determine the user requirements of an online
collaborative workspace, we first need to determine which features
exist in current systems. The main question driving the literature
survey therefore is: What are the main components of current
online collaborative workspaces as reported in the literature?
Chapter 2 of this report is devoted to identifying and researching
the various components that define an online collaborative
workspace. Each of these components are investigated in detail by
means of informal interviews as well as a literature survey. The
components that were identified include a digital library, online
discussion forum and collaborative workspace. In addition to
identifying the various components, this chapter also addresses the
motivation for the use of
open source software and the importance
of usability. With the information obtained in chapter 2, chapter 3
sets out to develop a framework which addresses each of the
components that were identified. The various features and
properties of each component were identified and decisions were
made with regard to the best method of implementation. In addition
to the components that were developed, this chapter also focuses on
various design implications such as modularity and the use of
open
source software. Chapter 4 describes the various projects where the
framework was implemented. For each of the projects the user
requirements, customisations and usability issues are addressed.
This chapter highlights the framework's ability to be customised to
suit the diverse needs of research projects.…
