Online social networks have been attracted considerable attentions and provided new channels for users to share and disseminate content, products, ideas and etc on the websites. With the advent of Internet, the user activities in online social networks can be easily tracked, which provide us with a extremely large scale of online data to study the individual interaction patterns and interpersonal influence over online social network. In this work, we aim to investigate the characteristics of user rating activity contagion, by which the information can spread through network of users in Epinion online social network. Our study is based on a dataset collected from Epinion online social network, which includes not only the trust network data indicating the social graph formed by its users but also the users’ rating activity data. We analyze the social structure and confirm that the Epinion social network exhibit small-world and scale-free characteristics. We present the analysis of user rating activity data and extract the interactions between users, that indicate the spread dynamics of user activity over Epinion using a percolation process based methodology, and present the user behavior patterns observed in Epinion social network. We propose a social contagion model that is inspired from the Epinion data, which captures the unique characteristic that percolation probability along social links is dependent on the user degree property. We use the model to systematically study the propagation dynamics of user activity through the Epinion social network as well as two generated network models: scalefree network and Erdos-Renyi network on the activity dynamics to investigate the following questions: How quickly and widely does rating activity spread in Epinion social network? How social network topology influences the activity propagation process? Which type of social network can be used to best facilitate the information diffusion ?

▼ This dissertation explores the role of new media for reconfiguring different components of contraceptive discourses and reconnecting different actors in contraceptive processes. Echoing recent literature, high rates of unwanted pregnancies and low adoption of proactive contraceptive use among contemporary Chinese are resulted from a web of sociocultural and geopolitical factors (To et al., 2012; Amaro, 1995). Consciously or not, Chinese people form and adjust their contraceptive strategies against complex backdrops of hegemonic sexual education, privatized medical services, cultural paradoxes, state population management, and gendered sexual norms. Taking a cultured-centered epistemological approach to health communication that redefines what communication and sociocultural context means to health, this study explores network discourses of contraception through three layers—the discursive layer, the social layer, and the technological layer. Results from content analysis, interviews, and discourse analysis, taken together, depicted a unique communicative ecology that is characterized by pluralized issue-discussions, stratified social interactions, and platformatized media engagement. More specifically along the discursive layer, this evolving communicative ecology of contraception features culturally- and socially-contextualized issue-discussion over contraceptive topics, digital storytelling of cultural knowledge, as well as negotiations between globalized health practices and indigenous socio-health traditions. At the social layer, network discourses of contraception reflect and remediate stratified discursive participation and structurally-decided social relations formed around contraceptive experiences. Finally, exploration via the technological layer leads to the identification of a platformized and decentralized new media architecture that fashions and shapes the discursive culture and conceptual norms of contraception. This dissertation investigates how new communication technologies, which afford ubiquitous accessibility to one’s social networks affect his/her psychological well-being. Research on this topic often suggests that these technologies accelerate the fragmentation of an individual’s personal networks, which, in turn, causes serious mental health problems such as depression. Counter to this view, I propose that new communication technologies allow individuals to have extensive awareness of various types of people in their networks, leading to diverse effects on their wellbeing. Given this proposition, my work focuses on the complexities of context, where continuous flows of information about social ties entails both positive and negative effects on an individual’s wellbeing. To generate a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, I conceptualize network awareness as one’s knowledge about other network members’ lives, relate it to use of communication technologies and examine negative psychological outcomes, such as stress and anxiety. The methodological approach of this study is primarily quantitative, but I leverage the strengths of qualitative interviews to add depth and detail. The findings lend greater theoretical foundations for the relationship between newer forms of communication technology and psychological well-being. I found that use of these technologies was not directly associated with negative psychological outcomes. Rather, it was indirectly associated with one’s psychological wellbeing through heightened network awareness. More specifically, use of some technologies, such as mobile messages and Facebook was associated with higher awareness of undesirable life events in the lives of others. This increased awareness then became a source of psychological discomfort in the form of higher stress or less belief in a just world. However, the negative relationship between awareness and psychological wellbeing was not uniform. Instead, it became more or less pronounced depending on the relationship an individual had with the people who experienced the undesirable life events, as well as which life events that individual had personally gone through themselves. Altogether, these findings suggest that the indirect effects of communication technology on psychological wellbeing are limited: users of technology experience different social strains depending on with whom they communicate what information through which technology. This dissertation ultimately corroborates the idea that the use of communication technologies is socially embedded, and its implications are socially determined.

▼ An increasing amount of personal information from different sources is collected and mined by different entities in the age of Internet, however the privacy implications of the availability of personal data on such a large scale are still unclear. This thesis concentrates on studying user privacy in two popular online services that heavily rely on user data: mobile application networks and online social networks (OSNs). We identify, characterize and quantify privacy issues arising in these services, and propose solutions to preserve users privacy.Recent work has shown that an excessive amount of personal data is collected by mobile ad libraries. We first investigate how the information is handled beyond the point of data collection and we reveal how privacy is leaked through mobile analytics services. We demonstrate how an external adversary can easily extract individualâs profile and application usage pattern from analytics services providers. Then, we characterize the usage pattern of a location-based social network (LBSN), a type of mobile OSNs that integrates location data as one of their primary features and we evaluate the risk of user re-identification based on the spatial-temporal patterns. Our results indicate that the pervasive spatial-temporal data can be used to build metrics for user re-identification, not only within the networks but also potentially by other mobile services that collect this information.To understand the privacy implications of cross-linking profiles across multiple OSNs, we then characterize the information revealing patterns of users. Our findings suggest multiple sources data aggregation not only enrich the amount of exposed information but also improve the quality (e.g. granularity) of information. We then address the important goal of quantifying the threats of linking external records to public OSN user profiles, by providing a method to estimate the uniqueness of such profiles and by studying the amount of information carried by public attributes.Finally, we leverage our understanding of the OSNs and mobile networks to design privacy-preserving mechanisms. We study a number of obfuscation schemes that prevent statistical inference attacks in OSNs from user perspective. Our results contribute to better understanding of obfuscation in the OSN setting and suggest how a user-friendly strategy can be derived. To preserve privacy in opportunistic mobile networks, i.e. mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) we also propose an anonymous identity management protocol that provides strong anonymity as well improved performance. This research presents a case study on the interactions between the participants of the forums of four online undergraduate courses from the perspective of social network analysis (SNA). Due to lack of studies on social networks in online learning environments in higher education in Portugal we have choose a qualitative structural analysis to address this phenomenon. The context of this work was given by the new experiences in distance education (DE) that many institutions have been making. Those experiences are a function of the changes in educational paradigms and due to a wider adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) from schools as well as to the competitive market. Among the technologies adopted by universities are the Learning Management Systems (LMSs) that allow recording, storing and using large amounts of relational data about their users and that can be accessed through Webtracking. We have used this information to construct matrices that allowed the SNA. In order to deepen knowledge about the four online courses we were studying we have also collect data with questionnaires and interviews and we did a content analysis to the participations in the forums. The three main sources of data collection led us to three types of analysis: SNA, statistical analysis and content analysis. These types of analysis allowed, in turn, a three-dimensional study on the use of the LMS: 1) the relational dimension through the study of forums networks and patterns of interaction among participants in those networks, 2) the dimension relative to the process of teaching and learning through content analysis of the interviews; 3) and finally the dimension related to the participants' perceptions about the use of LMS for educational purposes and as a platform for creating social networks through the analysis of questionnaires.With the results obtained we carried out a comparative study between the four courses and tried to present a reflection on the Online Project of the University as well as possible causes that led to what was observed. We have finished with a proposal of a framework for studying the relational aspects of online learning networks aimed at possible future research in this area.

▼ The rapid growth of social network sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, has recently received a great deal of attention from both academics and practitioners. Millions of users actively participate on social network sites. Facebook alone has more than 500 million registered users. Marketers have begun to recognise these social network sites as a new avenue to promote their brands online. Top businesses around the world create their brand profiles on popular social network sites. At the same time, research on social network sites is relatively scarce. Particularly, research investigating businesses’ practices of using the new media of virtual social network for their brands is very limited. The present study employs content analysis to investigate how top Global, Australian, Japanese, Swiss, and Taiwanese businesses use brand profile pages on Facebook as their online marketing communication tool. Differences in the use of brand profile pages as an online marketing communication tool across the above mentioned four countries and across industries are also examined. Overall, the results of the present research indicated that businesses with product brands were more likely to have brand profile pages on Facebook than their service counterparts. However, the practices of businesses with product brands and service brands on Facebook were not found to be much different. Similarly, it was found that there is not much difference in the use of brand profiles among brands from different countries and industries. The lack of differences might imply that businesses tend to use only basic features of their brand profile pages and are not likely to develop distinctive content. Moreover, several tools which have the potential to be valuable resources to obtain feedback from consumers, such as polls and discussions, were found to be underutilised. The interesting finding is that there is an association between businesses’ use of brand profile pages and brand value. However, the direction of the relationship could not be established. ▼ This study examines the potential for the Internet, or more specifically the World Wide Web, to enhance local democracy and local governance by providing a networked public sphere. It is located in post-industrial theories of social and political transformation, which see a new, uncertain and complex society emerging which may transform the political significance of the 'local'. Whilst a number of causes are identified as culpable in this process, it is the ICT revolution and the development of the Web in particular, that is seen as possessing a democratising potential that, if realised, may bring greater resilience to geographic localities. The potential of the Web to provide a new networked public sphere is based upon contested views that its topography, its hyperlinked structure, can enable the ordinary citizen's voice to be heard above those that traditionally dominate political discourse. However, there has been no attention paid to this potential being realised at a local governance level within which, this study argues, a favourable environment should exist for a local online networked public sphere to prosper. Accordingly, this prospect is empirically explored here through a case study of the use made of the Web by a variety of local civic, political and institutional actors during a 2008 local (Manchester, UK) referendum on introducing the largest traffic congestion charging scheme in the country. This research applies a distinctive mixed method approach within a conceptually defined internet mediated domain of local governance. Relational Hyperlink Analysis is used to analyse the structural significance of the captured congestion charge. This analysis uses Social Network Analysis (SNA) and an associated statistical technique, Exponential Random Graph Modelling (ERGM) to render the network visible and understandable. To further illuminate how the network was used by local civic and institutional actors involved in the referendum the research draws upon a network ethnography approach which uses SNA to identify subjects for qualitative investigation. The study offers some evidence of the Web providing 'just enough' links in this local context to suggest the structural existence of a networked public sphere. However, further evidence from the narratives and the statistical model paint an alternative picture. This suggests that, in the main, hyperlinking behaviour and use made of the network corresponds to a 'politics as usual' scenario where cliques are more likely to proliferate and powerful economic and media interests dominate online as they do offline. If the ordinary citizen's voice is to be heard in this context then there is a requirement for policy intervention to establish a trusted local networked public sphere or online civic space, independent of vested interests but linked to the local governance decision making process. In addition to this there is a requirement for greater education, particularly aimed at senior local governance policy makers, in the culture of online engagement.

▼ Understanding the complex interplay of topology and dynamics in complex networks is necessary to answer a variety of questions, including who are the important people in a social network, what are the authoritative pages on the world wide web, who to quarantine to minimize the spread of an epidemic, what are the functional modules in a protein-protein network, and even how the world trade network affects the robustness of the global economy. To address these questions, we build predictive network models that take dynamic interactions into account. Our mathematical models are grounded empirically on data from online social networks on sites such as Digg, Twitter and Facebook. ❧ We claim that network structure is the product of both topology and dynamics. We propose a generalized interaction model that describes a range of dynamic processes, or interactions, taking place in complex networks, from random walks to epidemic spread. Traditionally, network analysis methods, including those used to identify central nodes and communities in the network, either ignore or make implicit assumptions about network interactions. We show, however, that different interactions lead to different views of network structure, and empirically verify this insight using real-world data from online social networks. ❧ A wide spectrum of heterogeneous activity spanning from information diffusion to spamming has been observed in online social networks. We have designed a simple, scalable and robust, information theoretic framework to automatically classify different types of activities. Of these, we are especially interested in information spread. We have developed a mathematical framework to quantitatively measure how information spreads on networks, and showed that standard epidemic models fail to describe the spread of information in real-world networks. ❧ Our work is a step towards the ultimate goal of building theoretically justified, empirically grounded network models that improve the prediction of future behavior, aid information discovery and outbreak control, and help in designing network policies for our connected world. A primeira parte do trabalho incide sobre a revisão da literatura referente aos conceitos de redes sociais, recrutamento e selecção, recrutamento através das redes sociais, redes sociais online e recrutamento nas redes sociais online. Na segunda parte é apresentado o estudo empírico baseado em informações obtidas através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas a gestores de recursos humanos responsáveis pelo recrutamento, bem como entrevistas a candidatos a emprego por via das redes sociais on-line. Este estudo permitiu concluir que o recrutamento nas redes sociais online é um fenómeno recente, pelo que nem todas as suas potencialidades estão desenvolvidas. Os gestores de recursos humanos referem esta nova ferramenta como um facilitador e acelerador do processo de recrutamento, sendo que é encarada como um complemento aos outros métodos e não como substituição. Os candidatos a emprego que utilizam as redes sociais online referem as redes sociais como uma ferramenta de marketing pessoal e que os põe em contacto com um número elevado de empresas e ofertas de emprego.

The aim of this work is to understand the recruitment phenomenon in online social networks. The first part of the work is about a review of the literature regarding social network concepts, that is, recruitment and selection, recruitment through social network, online social network and recruitment through online social network. The second part presents the empirical study based on information got from semi-structured interviews to Human Resources managers, who are responsible for the recruitment, and on the other hand to applicants for a job through online social network. From this study, we can conclude that the recruitment through online social network is a recent phenomenon which does not develop all the potentialities. Human Resources managers refer to that new tool as a facilitator and accelerator of the recruitment process, and it is considerated as a complement of other methods and not a replacement. The applicants for a job that use the online social network refer to it as being a personal marketing tool that enables them to be in contact with many enterprises and jobs.

Com o aumento da competitividade no mercado, os consumidores são bombardeados com campanhas de marketing e publicidade, como tentativa das empresas para alcançar um lugar na mente do consumidor. Actualmente, as redes sociais proporcionam inúmeras formas de os públicos se envolverem com as organizações. Por esse motivo, desde que as redes sociais permitiram que as empresas criassem perfis e se tornassem membros activos, as empresas começaram a integrar esse tipo de estratégias nos seus programas de relações públicas. Esta dissertação procurará assim, analisar as estratégias online para a construção e manutenção de relações com os públicos, numa perspectiva multicultural. Recorrendo às listas das maiores empresas em Portugal e no Brasil, serão aleatoriamente selecionadas 100 de cada país, para que as suas páginas do Facebook sejam analisadas segundo critérios específicos, assim como as publicações feitas pelas próprias empresas e pelos seus públicos. Com uma amostra total constituída por 93 páginas oficiais do Facebook, dos dois países, e pelas respectivas publicações, realizar-se-á uma análise no sentido de procurar identificar a presença de indicadores que representem estratégias online de divulgação, disseminação e interactividade. Posteriormente tentar-se-á verificar a existência de um padrão a seguir pela maioria das empresas, bem como analisar as diferenças ou semelhanças existentes entre os dois países na forma como conduzem as relações públicas nas redes sociais, relacionando-as com as diferenças culturais que possam existir entre Portugal e o Brasil.

With the increase of the market competitiveness, consumers are attacked with marketing and advertising campaigns, as companies attempt to achieve a place in the consumer's mind. Nowadays, social network websites provide numerous ways for audiences to engage with organizations. Therefore, since social network websites have allowed companies to create profiles and become active members, companies began to integrate these strategies into their public relations programs. This dissertation will examine online strategies for building and maintaining relationships with the public, in a cross-cultural perspective. Resorting the lists of the largest companies in Portugal and Brazil, will be randomly selected 100 from each country, so that their Facebook pages are analyzed according to specific criteria, as well as publications made by the companies themselves and their audiences. With a total sample consisting of 93 official Facebook pages of the two countries, a deep analysis will be done to identify the presence of indicators that represent online strategies of disclosure, dissemination and interactivity. Lastly, we will try to verify the existence of a pattern to be followed by most companies, as well as to analyze the differences or similarities between the two countries in the way they conduct public relations in social networks, relating them to cultural differences that may exist between Portugal and Brazil.

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the methodological foundation of the studies aiming to assess trust between people who interact through Computer Mediated Communication (CMC), specifically those who create a set of online relationships which is commonly called Online Social Networks. The most popular method that is currently employed by researchers in this area is Trust Game, one form of the social dilemma games. The major studies that assess trust in social networks have established results that are mainly formed into hypotheses for the effects of a number of network parameters on the extent to which individuals would place trust on each other. However, hypotheses for the effects of a few number of network parameters is not deducible since the restrictive game-theoretic assumptions that are imposed into the model do not let any such evidence available. In addition, these assumptions inhibit the analysis of the trust situations in a more realistic environment than one in which actors are instructed by the axioms of the Trust Game. One way to relax the game-theoretic assumptions so that the trust situations take place in a more realistic environment is to introduce noise into the context of information transmission. Assuming that the information is not accurately transmitted between different individuals in an online social network makes it possible to argue that the rate of information that is obtained from different sources would influence the level of trust. Here, I conduct a series of computer simulation of a model of Iterated Heterogeneous Trust Games (IHTG), developed by Buskens (1998), adding the assumptions of incomplete information on 6 network structures sampled from Youtube, to investigate the effects of Indegree and Link-strength as the influential network parameters for the noisy environments. The results of regression analysis provide that both Indegree and Link-strength have positive effects on the level of trust, while in the same situation, the positive effects of Link-Strength on trust are more promising and unyielding than those of Indegree. In addition, I argue that the current model by Buskens (1998) carries a deficiency when it is applied to the noisy environments, since it can be fooled by inactive users (i.e. those who have a very low Outdegree compared to a high Indegree) to consider them as influential on the level of trust.

▼ Abstract The thinking of subverting the Internet world is ubiquitous. In Taiwan, a wave of âHappy Farmâ made FACEBOOK popularity soar. Community management of this site includes dynamic sharing, online chat, Club management, Fan zone, and many other online games. It also lets the application designers enrich the site content in an open way. âThe Facebookâ operated from February 2004 to the present. Now review the Facebook site, and itâs not difficult to find the design term constantly updates connotation philosophy to match up the various types of users. The study of the social networking sites shows that the ages are on the downward trend. For now, from the 13-year-old junior high school students to the general public are included. In Taiwan, ther e are 12,107,600 population using the Facebook.(101.7.5 Ministry of the Interior statistics). Taiwanâs population accounts for about 23,261,747. It means half of Taiwanâs population using the Facebook. The proportion is quite popular, which is an important reference for the study of nation also of information technology in Taiwan. The research focused on the junior high school studentsâhabits of using the Facebook. We also cited the junior high school teachersâ observation and interviewed development applications industry to construct the overall architecture which can be used to observ how the habits influence the studentsâ lives and know the changes brought about by the community website. ▼ Online discussion forums have become widely adopted as a supplement to in-class instruction as well as a primary venue for discourse in purely online learning contexts. Social connections and interactivity in online discussion have been identified as essential elements for successful learning experiences (Lapadat, 2002; Meyer, 2006; Schrage, 1990). In addition, reflection is considered to be a vital aspect of successful learning and helps learners look back on a performance, identify the important aspects of what is being learned, and consider how to improve it in the future (Collins, 2006; Lin et al., 1999; Schön, 1983; Schön, 1987). Accordingly, reflection strategies in online discussion can help students monitor their own thinking process, advance in-depth meaning making, and promote knowledge acquisition and transfer (Guldberg & Pilkington, 2007; McDuffie & Slavit, 2003; Way, 2009). However, connecting notions of self-reflection on performance in the context of online discussion environments has not been clearly established in the literature. In addition, studies on analyzing the quality of discussion contents and the depth of cognitive processing were relatively less explored although in-depth analysis is essential to understand students’ learning progress and status. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of adaptive feedback on academic achievement, students’ participation, and interaction patterns in online learning with group discussion activity. Also, this study proposes an efficient feedback generation method to support learners participating in online group discussion and eventually enhances reflective learning. This field experimental study randomized the assignment of students (n=36) into either the treatment or control group to compare the effect of adaptive feedback. For this field experimental design study, the repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the data analysis which aimed to measure multiple levels of each factor over time. Both quantitative data and qualitative data were collected from three online discussion sessions. The results showed that the use of adaptive feedback was not effective in showing a significant difference between the treatment and the control group on academic achievement. However, the adaptive feedback helped students in treatment group engage in more intermediate and in-depth level of cognitive processing during online group discussion. In addition, the interaction pattern analysis revealed that students in the treatment group consistently participated with greater numbers of interactive messages than the control group during online group discussion. ▼ This thesis presents methods and techniques to analyze content propagation within online social networks (OSNs) using a graph theoretical approach. Important factors and different techniques to analyze and describe content propagation, starting from the smallest entity in a network, representing a user-account, up to complete friendship graphs and traces of content are described. All individuals and their attributes are stating the basic elements for statistical analysis of user behavior and individuals interests. When trying to identify the opinion of the population of a country for example, a random sample or data from everyone within the population is needed, a task which is not trivial because of different activity patterns and the fact that individuals may either do not provide information about themselves or obscure their data by supplying bogus information. This thesis shows that obtaining a random sample of the population of the Netherlands is possible in terms of certain parameters like the location, family and first names of users. Such a sample is likely not to be “random” in terms of the age of inhabitants and the usage of gathered data in order to predict the outcome of elections may be questioned. The representation of an individual's view onto an OSN is called an ego-centric network. It contains all friends and relations between friends of an ego within a sub-graph. Within such graphs, the influence between friends can be estimated improving the usability of recommendation systems which also raises concerns about the privacy of users. This thesis describes possibilities to reconstruct private information of a user if only a few friends of the individual share their data publicly because most friendships are created between persons having similar interests. Therefore the current way of dealing with privacy concerns, by enabling users to protect their data, is not sufficient. The structure of ego-centric networks also unveils the ability of egos to spread and control the spread of information as a person completely embedded in a group has less control over disseminating content than a person connecting multiple groups. A snapshot of a whole network of an OSN includes all user-accounts (nodes) and friendships (links) at a certain point in time. But as OSNs may contain millions of nodes the process of obtaining data by crawling is likely to be skewed depending on the used method and duration. Therefore a new way of traversing the graph called “Mutual Friend Crawling” is proposed in which certain network metrics converge faster to the final value by also detecting communities of users while traversing the graph. When analyzing the diffusion process of content in multiple OSNs, only a limited fraction of the neighbors of a user (i.e. friends) are ”useful” in terms of spreading content to their peers. Commonly used network metrics which reflect the centrality of a node are shown to have no correlation with the ability to repeatedly succeed in passing messages to a high number of users.
