▼ This dissertation examined how an asynchronous video reflection tool impacted learners’ perception of social presence and their feeling of community in an online learning environment. More than ever before learning in postsecondary education takes place online through computer mediated communication, as almost all colleges and universities offer some of their courses online (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). There are many benefits of online learning (Graham, 2006; Griffiths & Graham, 2009b; Rourke, Anderson, Garrison, & Archer, 2001), but there are problems as well. One of the problems students can have while learning online is the feeling of isolation and the lack social presence with others (Ali & Leeds, 2009; Borup, West, & Graham, 2012; Rovai, 2002). To help mediate this problem, instructors use different online technologies that encourage learners to communicate in a variety of ways, including through video and visual media. There are many video-based tools available and many are newly in development; this study examines one in particular called Flipgrid that can be used by instructors and students to create and share video-based reflections on course content. The purpose of this study is to help online instructors, instructional designers and educational app developers find new ways of enhancing or increasing social presence for their target audience by exploring the following research questions: (1) How does an asynchronous video reflection tool impact students’ perception of social presence in an online class? (2) How does seeing classmates’ video recordings influence students’ feeling of community in an online class? And (3) How does creating video recordings influence students’ feeling of community in an online class? This interpretive case study (Stake, 1995) was informed by the Community of Inquiry framework (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2000) and utilized qualitative methods for data collection and inductive data analysis to understand the phenomenon of social presence and how learners experienced it while using an asynchronous video reflection tool. Data was collected from students from five separate undergraduate courses that took place fully online. Analysis of qualitative surveys, focus group, and individual interviews revealed three themes from the data: familiarization, authenticity, and distractions. Participants expressed that getting to know classmates by seeing and hearing them in an online course was important to them, and authentic videos in which students shared personal stories to support their points of views were highly valued. There were also distracting elements, like privacy concerns and the feeling of being rushed while doing recording, that negatively impacted the experience of recording and watching video reflections. Based on the findings of this study, a refined definition of social presence is proposed.

▼ In a digital age where user generated content is spreading rapidly on the internet and its use and consumption are becoming more and more popular, information control becomes harder to exercise by institutions on social networks where the information circulation is growing rapidly. The influence of power evolves from a unidirectional exercise of power, to a negotiated power in a multidirectional gatekeeping network. Gatekeepers in these networks hold different power positions based on how they each affect the flow of information inside a network. On Twitch.tv, the information is the streams broadcasted on the social platform, and their circulation is reflected by the popularity of these streams and how large of an audience they draw. This study explores how the gatekeepers influence the popularity of the live streams in Twitch. The gatekeepers present in the Twitch gatekeeping network each affect the popularity of the streams differently resulting in a changing power positions in the network. In the gatekeeping network theory model established by Karine Barzilai-Nahon, thirteen gatekeeping bases were identified: Selection, Addition, Withholding, Display, Channeling, Shaping, Manipulation, Repetition, Timing, Localization, Integration, Disregard, and Deletion. These bases are the processes by which the gatekeepers affect the circulation of information in a network. This study identifies the gatekeepers who constitute the Twitch network (namely game publishers, Twitch, streamers, and the audience), then seeks to identify the gatekeeping bases used by each gatekeeper to affect the popularity of the streams on Twitch. This process will help establish the relative power of each gatekeeper in comparison to the others. To answer these questions, mixed methods were used combining a netnography and a questionnaire. To identify which bases are used by the game publishers, Twitch, and the streamers, netnography in the form of participant observation was used. A selection of screenshots and a collection of web articles were collected and analyzed to identify the bases used by these respective gatekeepers. This analysis was conducted using manual qualitative coding based on a large selection of screenshots captured during the netnography. An immersion of the researcher in the platform seeks to establish the processes used by these gatekeepers and how they reflect on the popularity of the streams. To identify which bases are used by the audience, a questionnaire was used to generate insights about how the audience chooses streams to watch and how it contributes to spreading them online and thus helping to popularize them. Finally, a discussion of the results shows how the gatekeeping network of Twitch is a dynamic one where the popularity of the streams is negotiated between the different gatekeepers not only confirming the change in theory from a unilateral model to a multidirectional model, but also hinting to an increasing influence of the active audience over this popularity. ▼ Advances in digital communication technologies greatly affect online education at the college level. One such example is the use of asynchronous video in the online classroom, which when used to create threaded, ongoing conversations between students and instructors, presents a unique communication method and educational tool. Unfortunately, most research on the use of asynchronous video as an educational tool has been on using it to refer students to consume and analyze recorded videos or to create project videos. Little research has been done on the use of asynchronous video as a communication tool, thus creating a lack of research on the use and impact of this communication method. In this dissertation, I address this research gap by exploring the application of the asynchronous online video conversation (AOVC) in the asynchronous online classroom (AOC) to determine its effect on the participant-perceived social presence level in this setting, since social presence can be seen to provide certain benefits in communication. Specifically, I examine the use of the AOVC over two semesters (Fall 2009 and Spring 2010) of General Principles of Multimedia Writing, a junior-level online writing course offered through Arizona State University’s Multimedia Writing and Technical Communication program. The result is an analysis of participant perspectives and a video content analysis to determine how participants feel about their use of this method and what sort of communication actually occurs. In the end, I argue that something significant is altered in the transfer from the F2F classroom to the AOC and that the AOVC can simulate some of the communication exchanges that occur in the F2F classroom, while not providing real-time feedback. Additionally, I contend that the AOVC provides benefits over F2F communication in its ability to be recorded, archived, and retrieved, which could be valuable in educational contexts. ▼ Online education is popular from a consumer perspective, but there are elements of face-to-face instruction and assessment that are difficult to reproduce online (Bassoppo-Moyo 2006). The difficulty of reproducing valued elements of a face-to-face setting leads to concerns regarding the overall quality of the online learning experience. Videoconferencing is one technology that has been used to incorporate elements of a face-to-face environment. However, videoconferencing over the Internet is fraught with technical difficulties and live discussions remove one of the main benefits of distance education: time flexibility. A more recent development has been to use asynchronous video as a communications method in online courses. Griffiths and Graham (2009) described several pilots using asynchronous video in online courses at Brigham Young University. Asynchronous video conveys the verbal and nonverbal signals necessary for immediacy and social presence and retains the time flexibility benefit of distance education. Following the pilot studies, a prototype design theory titled the Asynchronous Video Learning Model (AVLM) was created for the use of asynchronous video in online courses. A study was designed to study a practical implementation of AVLM. The major purpose of the study was to observe and analyze the practical experiences of participants and improve the AVLM model. A class named IPT286 (Using Instructional Technology in Teaching) taught by the department of IP&T at BYU was redesigned to be an online class using AVLM. Data were gathered during the semester and then analyzed according to the methods described in this study. Results showed that many of the principles of the AVLM model were successfully implemented and led to positive experiences. Some elements of the model were not adequately implemented which led to some negative experiences. In addition, experiences led to new elements being added to the model. The study also revealed some interesting principles related to general learning theory. The data consistently revealed the importance of relationships in the learning process. Relationships between students and the instructor were shown to influence the student learning experience, and therefore the personality and style of the instructor impacted overall student learning to some degree.

Digitalisering zorgt ervoor dat media zeer gemakkelijk eigenschappen van elkaar overnemen. Mediaconvergentie is bijvoorbeeld zichtbaar bij televisie en internet. Het lijkt onvermijdelijk dat deze twee media samenkomen in een nieuwe hybride vorm. We gaan toe naar een tijd waarin we voortdurend online zijn. Over tien jaar beschikken gebruikers in huis of op hun werkplek over een mediaserver waarmee allerlei vormen van digitale content te ontvangen zijn. De mogelijkheid tot online aanbod is een ontwikkeling die nieuwe kansen biedt voor het documentairegenre. Documentaire is een nichemarkt en heeft de potentie om gebruik te maken van de voordelen van online aanbod. De vraag die in dit onderzoek centraal staat is welke veranderingen de mogelijkheid tot het online aanbieden van documentaires teweeg brengt in de distributie- en de vertoningspraktijk van de Nederlandse documentairesector. Om deze vraag te beantwoorden wordt vanuit verschillende perspectieven bekeken welke randvoorwaarden er verbonden zijn aan het online aanbieden van documentaire. Uit de bespreking van drie technologieën die van belang zijn voor online aanbod (breedbandinternet, digitale televisie en Video On Demand) blijkt dat de consument een belangrijke rol speelt bij de adaptatie van nieuwe technologie. Er wordt verder ingegaan op de kansen die online aanbod de Nederlandse documentairesector te bieden heeft. Er wordt gekeken in hoeverre er in de Nederlandse documentairesector aandacht is voor digitale technologieën en hoe zij hier beter gebruik van kunnen maken. Distributeurs en vertoners van documentaire komen voor een aantal vraagstukken te staan, die alleen met een adequate functieverdeling en nieuwe afspraken kunnen worden opgelost. Het onderzoek wordt verder doorgetrokken naar de praktijk aan de hand van drie casestudies. Er wordt gekeken in hoeverre er bij het Internationaal Documentaire Festival Amsterdam, het digitale themakanaal Holland Doc en het documentaireplatform DocsOnline aandacht is voor de vraagstukken die het online aanbieden van documentaire met zich meebrengt. Zij gaan alledrie heel verschillend om met de mogelijkheden van online aanbod. Maar er is een gemene deler en dat is de wens om een virtuele ontmoetingsplaats te creëren waar mensen met elkaar in contact kunnen komen en elkaar aanbevelingen kunnen doen of met elkaar kunnen discussiëren. ▼ The rapid transition of shopping and consumption to the Internet makes it important to understand the specifics and implications of these online activities for firms and consumers. The first and second essays are empirical studies explaining the consumption of an online entertainment product. Their novelty is the focus on the process of consumption, as opposed to a purchase decision. The main challenge in studying consumption in academic marketing has been the lack of empirical data, which led to this area being understudied. This dissertation employs unique datasets that track consumer interactions with an online video game. The first essay concentrates on the product characterized by frequent updates and progression of consumer involvement and explains the determinants of success for this product type. The second essay aims at disentangling the product usage drivers: intrinsic preferences, external rewards provided by the firm, and past consumption in the form of habit. The essays contribute to the marketing field by suggesting empirical models of product usage that can be applied to a number of product categories. While both essays use empirical dynamic structural modeling as research methodology, the second one in particular provides extensions to methods of estimating dynamic structural models in continuous time to allow for a consumer state not observable by the researcher. The studies run counterfactual analyses to demonstrate the impact of changes in products on consumer involvement and provide managerial recommendations. The third essay is a theoretical investigation of the implications of information asymmetry that exists between consumers and sellers in the context of online product reviews. This essay demonstrates that the lack of information about consumer heterogeneity prevents an individual from correctly inferring the true product quality from product reviews. Using a structural dynamic model and simulations, the study shows that in the market where information asymmetry is eliminated, the firms are able to earn higher profits. The findings are in line with the empirical evidence that online sellers try to reduce the information asymmetry by disclosing previous ratings by consumer type to their prospective customers.

▼ The availability of digital channels that allow the distribution of copyrighted material has raised several questions over the last few years. With several different media and entertainment companies claiming lost profits due to digital piracy, this master thesis was created to deliberate whether companies have a right to feel damaged by illegal activities related with their content, more specifically TV-shows, the motives leading to this behavior, and if this influences the subscription of online video bundling services such as Netflix for people who access this content illegally via for example Torrent communities. We address these questions by gathering information from various legitimate sources regarding current TV-show business models (Mirrlees 2013) (Masouras 2015), the way pirates’ access and visualize copyrighted content and by inquiring said pirates about their purchase intentions regarding services like Netflix. In order to do this, an online survey was created and shared on social media as well as in popular torrent websites, targeting people that incur or had incurred in illegal downloading of video content. We use a variation of the popular Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to gather the data regarding pirates’ intentions of subscribing an online video bundling service. While some of the chosen variables revealed themselves to be non-significant contrary to what was firstly believed, we were able to identify Perceived Convenience, Price, Perceived Value and Morals and Ethics as the most influential factors that users contemplate when considering adopting an online video bundling service. This master thesis is therefore an addition to the current academic literature that depicts media consumption when users have an illegal free option to choose from. Adding the fact that this research focus specifically in the TV-Show industry ( something that has been majorly overlooked so far), we hope that the studios and related media personnel will understand what is actually valued by these type of consumers so that in the future they can offer higher value in order to capture these potential customers. ▼ This study examined the feasibility of a web-based adaptation of a promising parenting intervention and examined preliminary data on its effectiveness. Filming Interactions to Nurture Development (FIND) is a strength-based program designed to increase developmentally appropriate, supportive, nurturing behaviors among parents of young children. FIND is also theorized to increase parent sense of competence and decrease parenting stress. The present study adapted FIND to a web-based format to explore feasibility and conduct preliminary analyses on parenting outcomes. Oregon parents with children aged 0 through 4 were recruited through online advertisements and in-person community recruitment. Participants completed online pre- and post-intervention surveys and participated in the FIND: Web-Based intervention (including sharing videos of parent-child interactions) using a secure online app on their mobile devices. Participants’ first and last videos were also coded for frequency and consistency of positive responsive parenting behaviors. Results showed that significant changes to both research and intervention protocols must be made prior to further research and implementation of FIND: Web-Based. Despite significant recruitment efforts, the small sample size coupled with high attrition rates demonstrated that overall, FIND: Web-Based and the current research procedures were largely not feasible. In terms of exploration of preliminary outcomes, no statistically significant results were found for group changes in parent sense of competence or positive parenting behaviors using video coding. On the other hand, participants did report a significant decrease in parenting stress at post-intervention (small to medium effect size), specifically in parent-child dysfunctional interactions (medium effect size). The small sample of participants who completed the study reported overall satisfaction with the intervention. Many felt the content of the intervention was useful and relevant, found the videos helpful, and enjoyed the strength-based perspective. Most liked the convenience, flexibility, and/or accessibility of the novel web-based format. On the other hand, participants had challenges filming themselves with their child(ren) and sharing videos using the online app, as well as other technological difficulties. Implications of these findings include the importance of significantly modifying the study design, procedures, and online intervention format in order to increase feasibility of any future research on FIND: Web-Based. ▼ Playing computer games has often been theorised to be linked to the wellbeing of users. However, the variables involved and the relationships and interactions between them have not been established. The purpose of the present study was to investigate, whether there are core aspects of game usage that are related to increased or decreased wellbeing, and the extent to which these depend on players’ real-life situations. The project comprised three studies and used an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design. In the first study, the ways in which players use games were investigated. To identify the key aspects of game usage for distinguishing and describing how players use games, in-depth interviews were conducted with 23 players of different games. This data and two subsequent quantitative tests, the first with 314 participants and the second with 770 participants, were used to develop a game-usage questionnaire and a framework with eight factors. The relationship between game usage and wellbeing was investigated in a longitudinal study conducted over nine months with 531 participants. Personality – as proxy for internal characteristics – and basic psychological needs – as proxy for participants’ situations in life – were taken into account as potential moderators of that relationship. Results showed that the overall correlations between game usage and wellbeing are weak and subsumed by players’ needs and personality. However, there were interactions between game usage and needs: Some game usage factors seem to directly reflect real-life situations and wellbeing; others seem to be common responses to real-life situations with no impact on wellbeing; and others again appear to impact wellbeing depending on the real-life situation. Social game usage seems to be a key factor with relevance for wellbeing. The contribution of this thesis is twofold. It provides a general framework of game usage that can be used in the field of game studies to interpret and compare findings more meaningfully, and it was shown that it is important to consider a person’s game usage in context of their real-life situations. ▼ This dissertation is a study of the historical formation and transformation of the Chinese online audiovisual industry under forces of strategic political calculations, expanding market relations, and growing social participation, and the cultural ramifications of this process, especially the kind of transformations digital technologies have wrought on the state-TV-station-centered mode of cultural production/distribution and regulatory apparatuses. Through this case, the project aims to theorize the changing mode of cultural governance of post-socialist regimes in the context of digital capitalism. Using mixed methods of documentary research, interviews with industry practitioners, participant observations of trade fairs/festivals, and critical discourse analyses of popular cultural texts, the study finds that the traditional broadcasting and the online video sectors are structured along two different political economic mechanisms. While the former is dominated by domestic capital and heavily regulated by state agencies, the latter is supported by transnational capital and less regulated. Digital technologies coupled with transnational capital thus generate new cultural flows, processes, and practices, which produces a heterogeneous and contested cultural sphere in the digital environment that substantially differs from the one created by traditional television. The development of such a sphere in a cultural environment that was historically policed suggests that the Chinese state strategically configures the cultural realm into multiple zones delineated by technological forms. Cultural zoning allows the state to accommodate needs in relation to transnational forces while simultaneously retaining socialist legacies through state media. Zoning technology demonstrates flexibility in cultural governance and thus illuminates the extraordinary resilience of post-socialist regimes amid neoliberal globalization. ▼ Processes of creative adaptation no longer fit traditional, culturally sanctioned forms, like commercial book-to-film adaptation, or vice versa. Meanwhile, internet users are demonstrating how noncommercial, creative text adaptation using video technology has become an everyday art form, a skill set, a form of communication, and a means of cultural commentary. Internet video adapters physically perform in their own videos and they create videos that work performatively online. Negotiating the slippery spaces between copyright, creativity, and cultural commentary, these creators adapt videos in myriad ways, and find spaces to share their adaptations online, despite (for most) a lack of financial return for their creative work. Yet, little scholarship addresses this type of online adaptation. Current studies of internet video memes do not explicitly address how memes work as adaptation or as performance. We are also at a loss for theories about adaptation and performance that serve contemporary, internet-literate publics. In this dissertation, I explore how traditional notions of the processes and products of adaptation are changing. I argue that internet video memes and “sweded” videos are performances of adaptation. Focusing on four case studies, each of which represents types of adaptations that do not fit well into current adaptation theories, I develop a typology for online video-to-video adaptation that could be useful in multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary academic and/or public conversations. Using this typology, I map some of the (mostly uncharted) terrain of online video adaptation performances, elucidate the limits of and expand upon contemporary theories of adaptation, and clarify some major problems and paradoxes of current US copyright law, as it pertains to online video adaptation. Throughout, I show how the adaptations in this study create, sustain, and/or upend contemporary culture, concluding that most (if not all) online video-to-video adaptation trends carry creative potential, along with potential ethical quandaries.

▼ Foreign language courses that are delivered at a distance using synchronous video tend to be more instructor centered than learner centered. Based on literature indicating that foreign language learning occurs when learners are actively engaged, an instructor delivered an online college Spanish course with synchronous video sessions and flipped classroom methods. The same instructor also implemented flipped classroom methods for learners in a face-to-face class environment. A content analysis of weekly reflections by learners and the instructor revealed that both groups experienced qualities of learner-centered classes. The online group experienced more technical problems and the face-to-face group had more time to speak Spanish with classmates and the instructor. Learners also performed spoken Spanish language tasks before and after the treatment period, and face-to-face learners scored significantly higher on post-treatment scores compared to pre-treatment scores for the outcome of content, purpose, and organization. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in gain scores from pre-assessment to post-assessment. Online learners gave higher ratings for the scale of student autonomy on the Distance Education Learning Environments Survey, the only statistically significant difference from the survey results. Overall, the data support the use of flipped classroom methods to engage online learners and an orientation to online learning to reduce learners’ problems with technology. Conducting online foreign language courses in a hybrid format would promote learners’ regular participation in synchronous video sessions. Instructors might improve the quality of classes delivered by synchronous video by reading about best practices for learner-centered teaching, by embracing target values for synchronous video sessions, and by reflecting regularly on how well they fostered those qualities in their teaching.
