Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Kommunikation auf online Gedenkseiten im deutschsprachigen Raum. Die theoretische Ansiedelung ist hierbei interdisziplinär in den Feldern der Soziologie, Psychologie und Kommunikationswissenschaft. Die Fragestellung bezieht sich auf die Herausarbeitung der Attribute, die zur Erstellung einer Gedenkseite führen. Für wen werden Gedenkseiten im deutschsprachigen Raum erstellt? Welche Inhalte sind auf diesen Profilen zu finden und wie Verhält sich die Kommunikation auf diesen Seiten über die Zeit hinweg? Zu diesem Zweck wurden in dieser Arbeit 500 Profile eines deutschsprachigen Gedenkseitenanbieters untersucht. Insbesondere standen dabei die soziodemographischen Daten der Verstorbenen, sowie die Profilinhalte im Zentrum der Untersuchung. Ausserdem wurde neben der Anzahl der geposteten Nachrichten in Form von Gedenkkerzen, ausserdem dessen zeitlicher Verlauf erhoben. Die mittels Inhaltsanalyse gewonnenen Daten wurden dann anschließend anhand einer Regressionsanalyse ausgewertet. Diese zeigte verschiedene signifikante Ergebnisse bezüglich der Faktoren, welche das Postingverhalten auf diesen Seiten im deutschsprachigen Raum beeinflussen. Des weiteren wurde das Postingsverhalten der Profilbesucher über einen Zeitraum von minimal einem Jahr auf ihre zeitlichen Muster hin untersucht. Ins besondere wurden hier individuell relevante Daten, wie Geburtstag und Sterbetag, in den Fokus der Untersuchung gestellt. Zusätzlich wurde ausserdem das Postingverhalten in Bezug auf das allgemeine Kalenderjahr betrachtet.

The present thesis examines communication on online memorials in the German speaking area. The theoretical background in placed interdisciplinary in the fields of Sociology, Psychology and Communication Science. The question aims to extract the attributes that lead to the creation of a memorial profile. Who are online memorials created for in the German speaking area? What content can be found on these profiles and how are patterns of communication over time? To this purpose 500 profiles on a German memorial website where examined. In particular sociodemographics, as well as the content on these profiles where in the center of investigation. In addition to that the number of posted messages in the form of remembrance candles, as well as their date stamps were collected with the data. Data was collected through content analysis and analysed by a regression analysis. Results indicate significant findings concerning the factors that influence communication activity on profiles in the German speaking area. In addition to that patterns of communication in the form of postings over the minimal time span of one year where examined. Examination regarded dates of individual importance, such as birthday, day of death, as well as the general calendar year.

▼ The digital age has changed the way we live and die. A large variety of social networking services (SNS) have become our everyday context. Profiles on SNS register all important moments of a user’s life. Death, one of the most essential concepts of human existence, is also reflected on SNS in different ways. The digital era offers a wide variety of options for online mourning. The bereaved can create an online memorial, put a candle for the deceased’s soul in a virtual church, or even arrange funerals. Current research is focused on the role of communication in the process of online mourning on SNS: it examines how members of an online community communicate with a dead user and with each other, how this communication differs before and after death, and how offline death culture corresponds with online mourning rituals. Almost all of the studies on online death culture published so far have referred to the Western mourning tradition and analyzed online mourning in an English-speaking environment. This work suggests that the process of online mourning differs in different cultural contexts, depending on local mentality, culture, and traditions and intended to be the first study on death in an online environment conducted on Russian material (social networking service VKontakte). Methodologically this study follows a mixed-methods approach. The results from content analysis conducted on the groups of commemoration on VKontakte have shown to whom these groups are dedicated and how members of commemoration groups communicate with the deceased and with each other. Discourse analysis complement the results of content analysis by showing how communication in online communities differs before and after death. The results of the research were discussed in connection to Russian death culture, the meaning of death and dying in Russian society. The study is relevant on several levels. It is meant as a contribution to a conceptualization of online mourning, which is clearly based on the social and cultural norms and therefore should be examined through the prism of different cultures. It brings together national culture and global digitalization and can be relevant not only for digital death studies but also for understanding contemporary Russian death culture.

▼ This thesis is concerned with online memorialisation in contemporary Vietnam. It argues that the experiences of Vietnamese who participate in the online memorial site Nghĩa Trang Online highlight the continuities as well as tensions which exist between online, offline and other world (the world of the dead) communications. At its starting point, this thesis situates Vietnamese online interactions within the cultural practice of ancestor worship in Vietnam, which is the dominant relationship Vietnamese have with the dead. It demonstrates that online interactions with the dead which may seem new and untraditional are profoundly embedded in ancestor worship, and that the practice of ancestor worship itself is one which has transformed, through political, technological, economic and cultural changes. These examinations also feed into wider socio-political issues in Vietnam, including the online memorialisation of fetuses after an abortion, and the remembering of revolutionary martyrs (liệt sĩ) killed during the American/Vietnam War in contrast to the forgetting of soldiers in the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam/South Vietnamese Army). This thesis also argues that Nghĩa Trang Online engenders a community where Vietnamese can express their emotions relating to loss, continue a relationship with the deceased through comments and online offerings, and give and receive support with fellow members. Such emotional expression is often disenfranchised in Vietnamese society and so online memorialisation becomes a new vehicle for the enfranchisement of grief. This thesis is based on twelve months’ fieldwork between 2012-2013 in Vietnam within the major cities of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang, through online and offline participant observation in the country’s largest online memorial, Nghĩa Trang Online (Cemetery Online). The site is also known as Nhớ Mãi (Remember Forever). Originating in 2008, the website currently has around 60,000 members who use the memorial to create online tombs for the dead, ‘light’ candles and ‘burn’ incense, create online offerings, and remember and communicate with the living and the dead. A number of members also meet in person and participate in death days, cemetery visits, birthdays, weddings, charity events and other social gatherings. The Internet is burgeoning with spaces dedicated to remembering the dead through social networking sites, blogs, museums, archives, cemeteries and memorials. While there is an expanding body of research contributing to this field, the interactions between the online, offline and the other world in contemporary Vietnam have not been anthropologically researched. This work aims to fill this gap, focusing on the extraordinarily diverse intersection of remembrance, continuing relationships, community, emotion and online memorialisation in contemporary Vietnam. ▼ Nowick and co-workers have reported that ethylene-bridged triureas can be synthesised with complete conformational control by judicious use of steric hindrance and hydrogen bonding. The concept of complete but switchable conformational control of these structures has not been investigated and is of interest as it gains access to dynamic peptide mimics with switchable hydrogen-bond directionality. Previous work in the Clayden group has shown that achiral oligourea-derived foldamers can communicate stereochemical information by binding a chiral ligand and inducing a helical excess.2 This served as the first example of reversible hydrogen-bond directionality in a synthetic foldamer. In our design, the global directionality of an ethylene-bridged oligourea foldamer can be controlled by applying an electronic bias at one terminus. When terminated with a hydrogenbond acceptor (HBA), the global directionality of the foldamer is defined and controlled owing to the hydrogen bond between the HBA and the ureido proton of the adjacent urea, and the hydrogen bonding between the ureas in the foldamer. The orientation of the final urea can be inferred from variable-temperature 1H NMR and NOE studies of the ureido protons and a benzylic methylene spectroscopic reporter. The opposite directionality can be accessed by using a terminal hydrogen-bond donor (HBD) instead of an HBA. The directionality of these foldamers can be switched by employing a terminal 2-pyridyl group, which can be switched between an HBD and an HBA by protonation/deprotonation. Upon protonation, the first urea reorients in order to hydrogen bond to the resultant pyridinium. This reorientation is communicated as binary information throughout the rest of the foldamer, resulting in a global directionality switch. Preliminary experiments on effecting the switching process with the light-induced photodissociation/association of a photoacid have been performed. Investigations into directionality-switchable foldamers with binding sites complementary to those of DNA nucleobases have been conducted. Different spectroscopic or chemical outputs at the reporting terminus have also been explored. Ethylene-bridged oligoureas represent a new class of foldamers that can undergo a global directionality switch in response to pH change or exposure to light, and could be amenable to DNA ligand binding. The concept of switching hydrogen-bond directionality in foldamers is a significant simplification of how biological systems store and communicate information and could provide access to interesting and useful chemical and biomimetic functions.

▼ Terrorism and atrocities have scarred the public memory in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Three atrocities, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site in Tasmania, Australia, and the 2002 Bali bombings, had a significant impact on the communities they most affected. How did the differing governments and communities at these sites respond to the sudden loss of life? How were the competing agendas of these groups managed ? Are there shared and distinctive characteristics in the memorialisation of atrocitites across these countries at the turn of the millenium? In responding to these questions, this study analyses cultural differences in memorialisation at contemporary atrocity sites. It examines the differing responses at the case study sites to the planning and the timing of memorials, the engagement of those affected, the memorial designs and the management of the memorials, including tributes. It is an original comparative study of contemporary memorialisation by a heritage professional directly involved in the management of memorials at contemporary atrocity sites. The original research includes the identification of the role the internet in contemporary memorialisation, an in-depth analysis of the memorialisation of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur Historic Site, and the memorialisation in Bali and across Australia of the 2002 Bali bombings. It extends the current scholarship on the memorialisation of the Oklahoma City bombing through identifying the impact of the internet in the memorialisation and in the timeframe of the analysis through to the 15th anniversary in 2010. The comparative analysis of the management of tributes at all the sites identified issues not previously considered in Australian scholarship: that tributes and the response to them is part of the memorialisation and management of contemporary atrocity sites. A combined research method based on an interpretive social science approach was adopted. A range of methodogies were used, including literature reviews, analysis of electronic material, site visits, unstructured in-depth interviews, and participant-observation at memorial services. Studies on history, memory and memorialisation provided the framework for my analysis and led to an original proposal, that all three sites have shared histories of the memorialisation of war and ‘missing’ memorialisation. These shared histories, I argue, strengthened the justification for this comparative study. This comparative study identified differences across the case study countries in the designs of the built memorials, in legislation enacted after the atrocities, the responses to the perpetrators, the marking of anniversaries, and in the management of tributes left at the sites. ▼ The purpose of this study was to provide a phenomenological description of peer interaction and to explore the sense of community experienced by online learners in an accelerated online course delivered asynchronously. Though research indicates the importance of peer interaction and community in online learning, and online learners indicate their desire to feel a sense of community in online courses, there is a gap in literature that qualitatively details the essence of peer interaction and online learners’ perception of community. To address this gap, I interviewed six post-traditional online learners regarding their experiences interacting with peers and the way those experiences contributed to their sense of community in an accelerated online course. Five main themes emerged based on participants’ experiences and perceptions: (1) Routine, (2) Technology, (3) Course Design, (4) Perceptions of Interaction, (5) Sense of Community. The findings represented throughout this research align with the two research questions that guided this study: (1) How do students describe their experiences interacting with peers in an accelerated online course? (2) How do students describe their experiences of interacting with peers as contributing to their sense of community in an accelerated online course? This research contributes to a deeper understanding of factors that shape peer interaction and the sense of community felt in an accelerated online learning context. The findings evidence implications for online pedagogy, learning management systems, and for the implementation of the Community of Inquiry framework. Future research that focuses on the experiences and perceptions of online learners who share similar or different demographic characteristics through various methods would enhance understanding of peer interaction and community in online learning contexts. The need for such research is evident as diverse student populations’ exposure to learning through distance, online, and remote modalities continue to increase. ▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the grief-related communication on Facebook memorial group walls. Three research questions guided the study as I sought to explore general characteristics of messages posted, how people regarded their own participation in the groups, and characteristics of Transcorporeal Communication (TcC), the communication between the living and the deceased. To respond to the research questions, I used grounded theory methods and asynchronous online interviews. I also utilized several of Goffman’s notions of human behavior to provide a more thorough analysis of the communication in the groups. In the pilot study, I used grounded theory methods to examine messages directed to the deceased on 10 memorial group walls. Analysis of a second set of walls challenged and tested the initial themes discerned in the pilot study. This resulted in the identification of 12 message themes. In addition to writing messages to the deceased, people wrote to other group members, utilizing task and relational messages as well as identity statements. People who did not know the deceased, the Emotional Rubberneckers, also wrote on the walls. To explore people’s participation in the groups, I conducted online, asynchronous interviews with five people who wrote regularly on Facebook memorial group walls. Interviewees indicated that their relationship and communication with the deceased remained similar to the relationship and communication that they had with the deceased before he or she died. Wall analysis and interviews revealed that people posted messages to multiple audiences: the self, the deceased, group members and “lurkers.” Due to the numerous audiences, the wall posts served various functions. These overarching objectives included grieving, maintaining relational continuity, giving or receiving social support, and Rubbernecking. Analysis of the walls and interviews also indicated that individuals utilized a unique form of communication, TcC, as they wrote messages to the deceased. This act raised theoretical questions about the nature of the communication. I posited a model of TcC and its components, including continued bonds, the deceased’s presence, and the inner representation of the deceased. ▼ Previous studies indicate that in comparison to face-to-face learning environment, online discussion requires students to engage each other at higher levels of thinking and not restrict themselves to recalling facts (Bell, 2006). A higher level of thinking in the learning process is observed when learners take responsibility of their learning process and exercise self-regulation. Although instructors usually use educational technology, such as online discussion forums, to encourage learners' interaction, at times the technology seems not to be fully integrated in instruction. (Scardamalia, (&) Bereiter, 2008). Scardamalia and Bereiter (2008) stated that educational technologies should not be regarded as mere technological innovations, but as a part of instructional design. Treating online discussion boards, chat rooms or wikis as part of instructional design encourages higher level learning practices (Nussbaum et al., 2002(;) Scardamalia, (&) Bereiter, 2008). This study explored the potential of online discussion board forums to support thoughtful dialogue that contributes to higher levels of thinking. Previous studies have indicated that although online discussion forums have the potential to enhance student engagement in reflective learning, the quality of this reflection is often shallow (Marttunen and Laurinen (2001(;) Nussbaum et al., 2002(;) Scardamalia, (&) Bereiter, 2008). Transformative learning theory enabled this study evaluate participants' perception of their learning experiences and progress in online discussion forums. The finding of this study was that participants of online discussion forum perceive transformative learning as a two-dimensional construct. This is inconsistent to previous studies proposing a four-dimensional construct (Mezirow, 2003). Further analysis of the collected data suggested that within the online discussion forums gender has no significant impact on learners' engagement in reflective learning practices. Neither do class-level play any role on the female and male students learning experience within online discussion forums. Significant contributors to learners' engagement in reflective learning practices include self-efficacy and sophisticated epistemological beliefs including certain knowledge, simple knowledge and innate-abilities. ▼ As part of the promotional mix, advertising plays a significant role in a company’s or organisation’s communication with its consumers and stakeholders. In order to inform consumers about their products or services, marketers apply a variety of advertising strategies. One particular strategy is “contextual advertising”, which refers to the strategic placement of advertisements in an editorial environment whose theme is relevant for the promoted product or service (Belch & Belch, 2009, p. 492). Also in advertising research, contextual advertising received a considerable amount of attention. Scholars have investigated the effectiveness of contextual advertising in online and offline media. Researchers as well as practitioners have particularly focused on content-based relationships between advertisements and the theme of the editorial environment in which the advertisement is placed. With a focus on online media, the present study aimed to investigate this content-based relationship but also to examine what other types of relationships between the different contents on a webpage the user constructs. Advertising has also been investigated in the area of semiotics. Several scholars analysed advertisements in order to reveal their meaning-affordances. A second interest in the present study derives from semiotic studies and theories, which emphasise the individual’s significance in the meaning-making process but also exclude the individual from their analysis. A potential contradiction could be seen here and by investigating how users interpret a particular webpage, this study aimed to examine what insights an analysis can provide that is solely focused on the webpage user. In order to capture users’ interpretations of a webpage’s contents and to investigate what types of relationships between these contents users construct semi-structured interviews with six participants were conducted. The participants were invited to look at a webpage from the website www.healthyfood.co.nz. Following the interviews, the participants’ responses were transcribed, categorised and analysed. Findings from the study revealed that several participants constructed relationships between advertisements and the editorial content based on content-similarity but also on design-similarity as well as their personal knowledge about sponsorship relationships and income-investment relationships. Personal knowledge also appeared to be important for the interpretation of the webpage. The participants’ interpretation of the webpage were also guided by their personal interest in the contents, their individual contexts like socio-cultural background, experiences and beliefs as well as environmental factors such as time and the layout of the interview location. The results of the study support the significant role of the individual in the process of meaning making and further contribute to an extended understanding of contextual advertising. ▼ Argumentation incorporated into class discussions can improve students' problem solving skills and enhance their epistemic and conceptual understanding. Research indicates students sometimes need scaffolding such as goal instructions to improve their argumentation skills. This study examined the effectiveness of different types of goal instructions on participants' argumentation achievement. In particular, the study compared the effects of minimal, moderate, substantial, and no goal instructions in asynchronous online discussions on participants' argumentation achievement, as measured by development, balance, and explanatory discourse scores. The study also tried to understand participants' experiences of the goal instructions by comparing the differences in emergent themes across goal instructions groups. Ninety-seven undergraduate students participated in three debates and posted responses to an open-ended qualitative question over a three-week period. The study found significant differences in the balance scores between minimal, moderate, and substantial goal instructions and no goal instructions, indicating that goal instructions are effective in facilitating responses that consider both sides of an issue. In particular, findings suggested that goal instructions with any level of specificity are more effective in creating balance in argumentation than no goal instructions and that minimal goal instructions are more effective than moderate and substantial goal instructions in encouraging participants to present both sides of an issue. While the study did not find significant differences in explanatory discourse scores, the differences were close enough to significance to suggest that goal instructions did have some positive effect on helping participants consider other people's perspectives in a constructive way and build on each other's ideas. Quantitative analysis of codes across goal instructions groups revealed participants who received limited instructions focused their discussions on the environment itself while participants who received extended instructions focused their discussions on the impact that debates had on them. Therefore, it is likely that more extended instructions made an impact on encouraging participants to think about their views and consider other people's perspectives. The study did not find significant differences in development scores or differences in participants' perceptions across goal instructions groups. However, there are indicators that suggest that participants might have dismissed many aspects of moderate and substantial goal instructions, and additional research is needed to confirm these conclusions. Additional research on goal instructions using different methods for evaluating quality of argumentation is also needed to confirm the results of this study.
