▼ This Master of Science thesis report describes the development process which aims to create a concept for a new off-road electric wheelchair for Permobil, with a focus on the vehicle-to-ground interface. It was performed between January and July 2015 as part of the Master Degree program, Industrial Design Engineering at Luleå University of Technology.Everyone does not have the ability to walk or transport themselves by their own means at trails or rough terrain due to injuries or other kinds of disabilities. The project aims to investigate how a solution should be designed in order to suffice the needs of these kinds of users. In order to achieve the goals, a series of research questions was determined, one of which read: How does the vehicle-to-ground interface affect the traction of the vehicle and the comfort of the user? The theoretical framework presents research findings necessary to reach the aim of this project and focuses on topics such as modularity, terrain types, off-road capability, vehicle dynamics and comfort. The overall development process in this project used a method called Pulse Model. The first stage of the project was market research with a primary focus on Permobil’s X850 model, which was put through several tests. The main problems found were that its lack of lateral stability, low ground clearance, and overall harsh and bumpy ride comfort. The idea generation included both the use of LEGO® Technic bricks, the catalogue method and function prototypes, which resulted in a multitude of different suspension systems. A concept with front and rear trailing arms were chosen for further development and a full-scale prototype was fabricated and tested, which provided important feedback for the final concept. The prototype enabled a set of key aspects that should be considered when designing an off-road wheelchair. These were a ground clearance of at least 200 mm, four wheel drive, 50/50 weight distribution, 360 degree rear wheel steering, a front pivot bar suspension system and active lateral stability system in the rear which makes it able to maintain a level seat while traversing side slopes. In this project it was demonstrated that it is possible to design an off-road electric wheelchair which enables people with disabilities to move around more freely and independently in tough terrain. It is also possible achieve this on Permobil’s new modular chassis, which will reduce both manufacturing, stock and production costs for the products overall life cycle.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to, on Volvo Truck’s account, look at a new concept for the construction ingress used on construction vehicles which have a higher ground clearance than ordinary trucks. The high ground clearance makes it hard for the driver to reach the first instep and therefore a construction ingress is assembled below the stationary insteps. It is designed in a way that avoids damage if colliding with objects. The present construction ingress used is too expensive, too complex and a bit unsteady to climb on. There is also a new construction vehicle being developed and the old ingress might not fit the new truck. The concept generation is carried out using systematic concept development. There are many demands and requests for the ingress and these are summarized in a design criterion list. All wished-for properties can not be fulfilled for the simplest ingress designs since they conflict with each other, for example flexibility and stability. The concepts that are generated are evaluated and selected through different matrices until one concept is found to be the most promising. Different designs of this concept are discussed and one is chosen as the most suitable. The chosen concept design is already used by at least two competitors and that confirms its suitability. The detailed design presented is only a suggestion for a new construction ingress. Before manufacturing the design needs to be analysed more accurately and the strength, material and cost need to be optimized. The analyses made in the project only show that the design is realistic and that it is worth further work. The final design is promising since it is stable to use, consists of only a few simple parts and will be cheap to manufacture.

▼ Road transport is responsible for a significant share of the global GHG emissions. In order to address the increasing trend of road vehicle emissions, due to its heavy reliance on oil, Nordic countries have set ambitious goals and policies for the reduction of road transport GHG emissions. Despite the fact that the latest developments in the passenger car segment are leading towards the progressive electrification of the fleet, the decarbonization of heavy-duty vehicle segment presents significant challenges that are yet to be overcome. This study focuses, on the first part, on the regulatory framework of fuel economy standards of road vehicles, highlighting the absence of a European regulation on fuel efficiency for the heavy-duty sector. Energy efficiency technologies can be grouped mainly in vehicle technologies, driveline and powertrain technologies, and alternative fuels. The fuel efficiency of HDVs can be positively improved at different vehicle levels, but the technology benefit and its economic feasibility are heavily dependent on the vehicle type and the operational cycle considered. The electrification pathway has the potential of reducing the carbon emission to a great extent, but the current battery technologies have proven to be not cost efficient for the heavy vehicles, because of the high purchase price and the low range, related to the battery cost and inferior energy density compared to conventional liquid fuels. A scenario development model has been created in order to estimate and quantify the impact of future developments and emission reduction measures in Finland, Sweden and Norway for the timeframe 2016-2050, with a focus on 2030 results. Two scenarios concerning the powertrain developments of heavy-duty vehicles and buses have been created, a conservative scenario and electric scenario, as well as vehicle efficiency improvements and fuel consumption scenarios. Additional sets of parameters have been estimated as input for the model, such as national transport need and load assumptions. The results highlight the challenges of achieving the national GHG emission reduction targets with the current measures in all three countries. The slow fleet renewal rates and the high forecasted increase of transport need limit the benefits of alternative and more efficient powertrains introduced in the fleet by new vehicles. The heavy-duty transport is expected to maintain its heavy reliance on diesel fuel and hinder the improvements of the light-duty segments. A holistic approach is needed to reduce the GHG emissions from road transport, including more efficient powertrains, higher biofuel shares and progressive electrification.

▼ This thesis presents an extension to a communication protocol proposed by Casimiro
and Schiller [1] for manoeuvre negotiation amongst autonomous vehicles.
Local traffic rules establish a priority ordering amongst vehicles sharing a section
of road. The manoeuvre negotiation protocol establishes procedures for how lowpriority
vehicles can seek permission from high-priority vehicles to enter shared areas
of road, in order to avoid collisions even in the presence of some common network
failures. The extensions proposed in this thesis adapt the protocol to be used in
intersections and increase safety in traffic situations where vehicles do not maintain
an ideal speed. This protocol is run alongside a risk estimator that continuously
estimates the likelihood of a collision between vehicles. When a high risk situation is
detected, the risk estimator will trigger an emergency breaking event. The combined
system was tested in simulations where two vehicles approached an intersection
from opposite directions and the intended path of one vehicle turns left across the
intended path of the other vehicle. Variables to model communication loss, noisy
positional data and violations of traffic rules by one vehicle were incorporated into
the simulations in order to evaluate the rigidity of the system.
The combined system resulted in fewer collisions and near collisions than were observed
when running the same simulations using either the manoeuvre negotiation
protocol or risk estimator separately. Furthermore, the combined system was shown
to adhere to the established local traffic rules. The results indicate that a combined
risk estimator and manoeuvre negotiation protocol can create a more robust safety
system than one that relies solely on either component.
A correctness proof is also provided in this thesis to demonstrate analytically that
the protocol increases safety by both reducing the risk collision between vehicles and
preventing violations of the established local traffic rules.

▼ The purpose of this project is to get a fully functional, automatic steering system and a variable breaking system with an emergency breaking function to an off road vehicle. This off road vehicle is supposed to work as an aid in military situations. A team of two, Sebastian Attervall and Nichlas Gustafsson, got an order from Jonas Nyårds and the PreeRunners Project to construct a steering system that could manoeuvre an off road vehicle without any human involvement. To make this possible the vehicle would be guided by onboard sensors, cameras and computers. The team where also assigned to construct an automatic breaking system, there also no human would be involved. The breaking system should as well contain an emergency stop function to prevent any accidents. The team has solved the problems assigned by using theories by David G. Ullman. The system that was eventually chosen was a steering system containing a 48V, 250W DC motor. A planetary gear where chosen to increase the torque from the engine. To translate the torque from the planetary gear to the steering bar a chain with chainwheel where chosen, this because the chain and chainwheel could withstand the immense forces acting on the chain. Between the planetary gear and the chainwheel a skid clutch is placed to prevent destruction on the planetary gear due to overload. The whole steering system is monitored by two rotary encoders, one placed on the engine and one placed on the steering bar. The breaking system eventually chosen where a system build on the existing drum brakes, placed in the front. To make the system independent from any human interference a system containing a linear motor, an electromagnet and a spring where chosen. The system works by letting the spring act on the wire from the existing drum breaks. The spring is always compressed so a force will always act on the wire when the system is at rest. By compressing the spring further the force acting on the wire will decrease and by compressing it enough the breaks will be released. The force compressing the spring will come from the linear motor. And to make the system failsafe in case of an emergency an electromagnet will be placed between the linear motor and the spring. When the power is cut to the electromagnet the compressed spring will be released and the drum breaks will break. The breaking system as well will be supervised by encoders and in this case linear encoders.
(more)
▼ Soil physical disturbances caused by forestry operations can be both intentional, e.g., soil scarification, and unintentional, e.g., soil compaction and rutting as a consequence of off-road traffic. All disturbances may alter the soil, and thus change its water and temperature dynamics, with consequences for both forest production and the surrounding ecosystems.
The overall aim of this thesis was to summarize how forestry operations – here: off-road traffic and soil scarification – affect the soil, its water content and tem-perature at clearcuts, as well as what implications this may have for, e.g., tree seed-ling establishment, field vegetation, and the surrounding ecosystems. The sum-mary is based on four studies, three on off-road traffic at two clearcuts in northern Sweden and one on soil scarification (disc trenching) at a clearcut in central Sweden. The methods used were soil sampling, X-ray tomography, image and soil physical analyses, in situ measurements of soil temperature and water content, vegetation survey, evaluation of abiotic growing conditions, and finally, hydrolog-ical modelling.
The most notable results were that even stony till soils in recharge areas were compacted by off-road traffic, which especially affected hydraulic conductivity, reducing it by 70%. Changes in soil physical properties caused by traffic may lead to longer periods of high water content, increased risk of surface runoff and insufficient root aeration. Five years after the operation, volumetric water content was higher in wheel tracks, and this was corroborated by the species composition of the vegetation. Simulations demonstrated how the changed soil hydrological properties influenced the water dynamics. Restricted aeration was more frequent in wheel tracks and could explain patches of bare soil in the lower parts of the slopes of the experimental plots. Logging mats and residues prevented creation of deep wheel tracks by off-road traffic, despite the additional passes necessary to apply (and remove) them. However, the logging residues were pressed into the soil, with potential soil compaction and element concentration beneath them as a result. To con-clude, care should be taken when planning off-road traffic, even on sandy till soils with high stone content.
After soil scarification, the soil temperature during growing season was higher in the furrows than in the area without disc trenching; the temperature effect lasted for at least six years, but decreased over time. No microsite was wet enough to hamper soil aeration after disc trenching. In conclusion, furrows offered a suitable microclimate for planting at the dry, boreal site.

▼ The ability to control engine valve timing has the potential to alter the engine performance over the entire operating range. The outcome of valve timing technology enables the possibility to increase efficiency, lowering emissions, increase engine torque, etc. One of the simplest ways to obtain a variable valve timing is to use cam phasers. The dynamics of a hydraulic cam phaser has been studied, three concepts with the purpose to control such an element has been developed using simulation driven product development. Focus have been on robustness, simplicity and implementation. A final concept using on/off solenoids to control a torque driven cam phaser has been designed and simulated in GT-SUITE which validated its performance and functionality. A dynamic model was built in Simulink which simulated the behaviour of the cam phaser and provided tools for optimizing the rotor design. By combining the knowledge of mechanical- and control engineering at Scania, the development process of such machine elements was effective. The outcome of this thesis has given a new perspective in understanding these components and their potentials.

▼ Off-highway vehicle, such as excavators and forklifts, are heavy machines that are capable of causing harm to humans or damage property. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to develop interfaces for these kind of vehicles that can aid the operator to maintain a high level of situational awareness. How the interface affects the operators’ situational awareness is consequently an important metric to measure when evaluating the interface. Mixed reality simulators can be used to both develop and evaluate such interfaces in an immersive and safe environment. In this thesis we investigated how to measure situational awareness in a mixed-reality off-highway vehicle simulation scenario, without having to pause the scenario, by cross-referencing logs from the virtual environment and logs from the users' gaze position. Our method for investigating this research question was to perform a literature study and a user test. Each participant in the user test filled out a SART post-simulation questionnaire which we then compared with our measurement system.

▼ The conversion towards a more automated transport system causes new challenges for information sharing, responsibilities and infrastructure requirements. This study examines autonomous vehicles’ need of reliable information and infrastructure, and how it affects the future road transport system, with focus on road signs. The purpose of the study is to investigate how cooperation among different actors can meet the vehicles’ need of information, with the assumption of mixed traffic including vehicles of different automation levels. Interviews were conducted with representatives from the automotive industry, the transport administration, the transport agency and a transport research lab. The results indicate great complexity and diversity among the actors perspectives upon how the automated transport system will be designed in the future. It is clear that autonomous driving will be limited to geofenced areas and restricted under special conditions, at least in the near future. Redundant and secure information obtained e.g. from digital maps, cloud services and vehicle sensors will be important for the future automated vehicle to make accurate strategic-, tactical- and operational decisions. Further, it is important that actors collaborate and share this information with each other.

▼ The recession of the early 1990’s marked the starting point for a transformation of the Swedish transportation industry. Cost oriented production techniques by the industry’s customer increased demand on swiftness, reliability and flexibility in transportation services. This development has continued ever since which in turn has continuously increased the rates of harmful discharges of emissions. The research is performed on the Swedish plastic industry and examines the relationship between environmental sustainability, lead time and cost when selecting road carrier for transportations. The main purpose is to examine to what extent environmental concerns are taken into account when deciding over distribution and furthermore, whether there exist potential and ambitions for improvements. Out of theories concerning transportation modal choice, four points of interest constitutes the basis for the empirical gathering; prioritization of selection determinants, environmental requirements in procurement of transportation services, use of rail freight and acceptable cost levels for implementing environmental sustainability. The study shows that the market of the Swedish plastic industry is driven by price competition and constant pressure from international trade. Naturally, cost is considered to be the foremost selection determinant in terms of transportation modal choice, followed by reliability and lead time. Furthermore, the study shows that environment is of low priority in respect to the other selection determinants. Although the current market condition diminishes the possibilities for changes, there exists a general ambition to become more environmental within the distribution activities. A majority of the respondent firms could potentially accept levels of increased transportation costs which balance with the costs of guaranteeing environmental sustainability in road transportations. In reference to increased environmental ambitions, three conclusions can be drawn. The relationship between environmental sustainability, lead time and cost allow for environmental improvements if lead time can be extended to the maximum conceivable limit of the market. Furthermore, the price competition of the market makes own initiatives impossible in terms of raising price for transportations; environmental sustainability in road transportation must therefore be preceded by demand for such. Finally, it can be concluded that environmental improvements cannot be achieved single handedly; costs must be evenly distributed among the suppliers, customers and haulers.

▼ Current private transportation remains very harmful for the environment, especially the non-electric vehicles. This report proposes five novel type of nanomaterials-based Li-ion batteries to improve substantially the electric vehicle battery properties along with a substantial reduction of the environmental impact of its commercial counterparts. To address the problem, a cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessment has been performed in which the biggest emphasis has been focused on the energy and materials inputs and outputs during the raw materials extraction. We show how the analyzed Ni-doped graphene battery and Fe3O4-based Cu battery are the most environmentally friendly, stable, reliable and improved batteries among the five cases of study. These results can open new horizons for future advances in the implantation of an electromobility transportation.

The wood industry asks for an imposition of 74-ton trucks on the national road system. There are several advantages of increasing the maximum gross weight from 64 to 74 tons. On the other hand, high gross weights are directly connected to structural road damage. The purpose of this study is to serve as foundation for further research by the Swedish transport administration. The ulterior goal is to reach better control on the national road system. The basis of the study is a web-based system - PMSv3, which contain road information and transverse road profiles. The observations in PMSv3 have led to rut-types ascribed due to heavy gross weights. The conclusion is that rut-patterns indications exist. Based on the observations in PMSv3, the rut-types have been formulated as hypothesis for further research.

▼ The increasing number of electric and hybrid vehicles in urban areas has shown to be beneficial in reducing both air and noise pollution. However, the lack of sound when driving at low speed has negatively affected the pedestrian safety since many rely on the vehicle sound for orientation. Regulatory bodies have therefore introduced minimum sound requirements for all silent vehicles, which has resulted in a key challenge for car manufacturers to develop external warning signature sounds. The objective of this project has been to study how these signals should sound in order to fit the image of electric and hybrid vehicles and minimize noise and annoyance. To complete the study, five sound concepts with different characteristics and rhythms were developed using the concept generation process. In order to gain subjective impressions of the sounds, three measurement methods were utilized. The first listening test was performed to eliminate the possibility that the sound samples would be perceived variously loud in the upcoming tests. The second listening test was performed to gain information on how suitable the signals are for electric and hybrid vehicles, and the third listening test was conducted to obtain information on how much annoyance the signals contributed with. A reference signal representing an internal combustion engine was included in the tests as well. The results of the measurement methods showed that the sound samples with long tone sequences were more preferred than those with short tone sequences, and that the artificial approach was more popular than the sound of an internal combustion engine vehicle. It was also established that additional tests need to be performed in order to confirm that these results are valid. It was suggested that field tests should be conducted and that new sound concepts should be developed based on the results of these tests.

▼ Sweden is a geographically large and sparsely populated country, with a need for road transport for individuals as well as for logistics. Domestic road transport largely contributes to air pollutions, where passenger cars account for the largest share. Looking ahead, the present rate of reduction of emissions is not enough to reach the climate targets of a fossil free transport sector. Electric road system (ERS) has emerged to deal with drawbacks of electric vehicles. Several solutions are being evaluated at demonstration projects. Until now, ERS is mainly associated with heavy vehicles and the relation to passenger cars is not as clear, where this study explores the social advantages of ERS and passenger cars. A case study is conducted, where an ERS implementation between Helsingborg and Malmö as part of the European route E6 in Sweden is modelled. The NPV with an economic lifespan of 20 years and an interest rate of 3.5 percent amounts to 350 MSEK, considered as high profitable. The CO2 emissions of the studied system would be reduced by 102 000 tonnes CO2, corresponding to a decrease of about 60 percent. Looking at the studied system, heavy trucks are contributing to the most impact. Nevertheless, there is great potential for passenger cars utilising ERS to decrease their emissions and fuel costs. Several semi-structured interviews have been conducted to highlight the prevailing views of ERS and passenger cars and the impact of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) for decision-making of transport investments. Several diverse views of ERS and passenger cars exist. ERS is a large investment, where the main need is among heavy vehicles. However, the profitability would increase as the amount of vehicles utilising ERS increases. In a future road transport system, it is possible that several technologies such as ERS, fast chargers and autonomous vehicles could be utilised simultaneous, and complete each other rather than being substitutes. It is conceivable that ERS is planned out of the needs of heavy vehicles, where passenger cars might benefit of the system as well. More passenger cars would likely utilise ERS as it is implemented to a greater extent. Further, CBA could provide a perception of the investment. However, it does not ensure that the projects are performed or chosen out of highest NPV, since several aspects besides the profitability are considered. Available information of ERS for CBA is yet limited and more data, such as effect relations is needed to facilitate well-founded decisions. In the future, it is likely that CBA of transport investments would become more complex, where several technologies would be considered. The transport sector will most likely alter, and existing assessment methods will presumably be adjusted in line with this.

▼ Energy utilization in Sweden has been on a rise since the 1980’s and the industrial sector has been its highest consumer. The construction industry plays a central role in building and developing cities for a population which is increasing rapidly year by year. Environmental awareness has given incentives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to make operations more sustainable. The construction industry faces three main challenges in regards to sustainability which are, material usage, vehicle fleets, and machine parks. Vehicles and machines are integral parts within the construction industry, however, how to reduce their environmental impact is a relatively new research area with many challenges. The conclusion that carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced is one that has been reached by the construction industry in Sweden. One way to study this aspect is by collecting and managing data on their fuel consumption since the vehicles and machines operate almost exclusively on fossil fuels. Data collection on fuel consumption by vehicles and machinery will give insight to what factors increase or decrease it. Analyzing these factors will allow for reductions to be made in terms ofcarbon dioxide emissions and costs. The aim of this report is therefore to investigate the aspect of data collection and management on fuel consumption in vehicles and machinery. The report is the result of work conducted in cooperation with the Nordic construction and development company NCC. NCC has set a goal for reducing climate impacts from direct operations by 50% between the years 2015 and 2020. In order for this to be achieved, carbon dioxide emissions resulting from fuel consumption have to be accounted for. As this is a new research area, this report is to serve as a baseline for NCC to get an overview of what challenges and possibilities there are with efficient data collection and management on fuel consumption. The study is initiated by analyzing the three main aspects which are taken into consideration within this study. The first aspect is authoritative requirements which are demands from authorities such as municipalities or the Swedish Transport Administration. The second is the contractors such as NCC which have to meet these requirements. The final aspect is the suppliers who contractors hire for projects. Furthermore, interviews are carried out to gain insight on experiences of persons within the field and the challenges they have faced. A study on Norrtälje Harbor, an old industrial harbor turning into a new city district, is also conducted as there is available data from the vehicles and machines in this project. Finally, a gap-analysis is constructed in order to gain an overview of NCC’s present standings, future goals, andlimitations in terms of data collection and management from vehicles and machinery. The findings of this report conclude that a lack of standard is the biggest challenge which theindustry is facing. Authorities face challenges on how to set standards while the lack of…

▼ The transportation sector is a vital part of today’s society and accounts for 20 % of our global total energy consumption. It is also one of the most greenhouse gas emission intensive sectors as almost 95 % of its energy originates from petroleum-based fuels. Due to the possible harmful nature of greenhouse gases, there is a need for a transition to more sustainable transportation alternatives. A possible alternative to the conventional petroleum-based road transportation is implementation of Electric Road Systems (ERS) in combination with electric vehicles (EVs). ERS are systems that enable dynamic power transfer to the EV's from the roads they are driving on. Consequently, by utilizing ERS in combination with EVs, both the cost and weight of the EV-batteries can be kept to a minimum and the requirement for stops for recharging can also be eliminated. This system further enables heavy vehicles to utilize battery solutions. There are currently in principal three proven ERS technologies, namely, conductive power transfer through overhead lines, conductive power transfer from rails in the road and inductive power transfer through the road. The aim of this report is to evaluate and compare the potential of a full-scale implementation of these ERS technologies on a global and local (Sweden) level from predominantly, an economic and environmental perspective. Furthermore, the thesis also aims to explore how an expansion of ERS might look like until the year 2050 in Sweden using different scenarios. To answer these questions two main models (global and Swedish perspective) with accompanying submodels were produced in Excel. The findings show that not all countries are viable for ERS from an economic standpoint, however, a large number of countries in the world do have good prospects for ERS implementation. Findings further indicated that small and/or developed countries are best suited for ERS implementation. From an economic and environmental perspective the conductive road was found to be the most attractive ERS technology followed by overhead conductive and inductive road ERS technologies. The expansion model developed demonstrates that a fast expansion and implementation of an ERS-based transportation sector is the best approach from an economical perspective where the conductive road technology results in largest cost savings until 2050.

▼ The forests are essential for healthy environment. Trees which are part of the forest help to stabilize the forest soil, improve soil fertility, reduce the velocity of wind, protect watershed and reduce the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere. Many industries use trees as raw materials and in most cases impact the environment, but there are great differences in the impact they make. There is a need therefore to continually evaluate the operational activities of these industries to ensure that the environment is protected. The use of environmental management systems like ISO and EMAS standards has helped in the evaluation of organizations and industries. In this thesis, two sawmills Iretunde and Irepodun in Etsako-West local government area Edo state Nigeria were evaluated with the aim to determine their operational activities and how the environment is being affected by them. Subaims were to determine the most significant environmental aspects of the sawmill and their organizational structure. In actualizing the aim of this thesis, literature review, site investigation as well as oral interview of the staff and management of both sawmills were conducted. In the evaluation of the environmental aspects, the detailed method of environmental impact evaluation by Ammenberg (2004) was used were each environmental aspect that was weighted against nine identified criteria. The result obtained from the environmental aspect evaluation of both sawmills shows that the use of raw materials and emissions to air are the most significant environmental aspects. In conclusion, it was observed that the both sawmills are well structured and carry out their operational activities effectively. Neither of them has registered under any environmental management system but there is a need for them to do so in order to help check their operational activities in order to reduce their environmental impact.

The subject matter of this Bachelor’s thesis is the special permit condition applying to water operations in accordance with chapter 11 section 6 of the Swedish Environmental Code. The article states that water operations may only be undertaken if the benefits, from the point of view of public and private interests, are greater than the costs and damages associated with them. The purpose of the regulation is to prevent water operations that are not socially efficient and to provide an additional protection for the environment, in excess of the general rules of consideration in the Code. The purpose of this study is to look into how this particular article is applied in practice. This is done by analysing the legal usage as practiced by the court as well as by the applicants. The general rule is that the applicant has to show that the operation, for which the permit is being sought, is in compliance with the obligations associated with the activity. The study shows that it is very difficult to find guidance from case law on how an assessment of the social efficiency is to be carried out. Court practice indicates that circumstances such as whether the operation is in compliance with certain environmental objectives can be used to weight different aspects in the social efficiency assessment. However, the assessments carried out by the applicants are in general focused on the economic benefits for the applicant. This practice might entail a risk for environmental values not being…

▼ This diploma work is carried through in Australia on a site in North Strathfield in the Sydney region. The whole work is built up around the idea to do four plan proposals that are optimized from different aspects. These aspects are chosen because we believe they are the most important issues in planning. Our four approaches are transportation, commercial, environmental and social aspects which will be joined into one final plan proposal. For each approach we have chosen what to focus on to delimitate the work. Our site in North Strathfield is triangularly shaped and surrounded by infrastructure; a railway and two motorways. Within our site there are two train stations which take you to Sydney CBD in 20 minutes. North Strathfield’s residential stock consists today of mostly low density housing from the beginning of the 1900s. At some places on the site, especially along the railway, new high density developments have been built. Centrally in the site there are big green areas for recreation and sports. The three biggest plots belong to Energy Australia, Mason Park Electrical Substation and an outlet shopping centre. The theoretical framework chapter concludes the literature we have read which form what our focus will be through the following chapters: • The transportation aspect focuses on street structure and promoting walking, cycling and public transportation. • The commercial aspect focuses on mixed use, location and scale. • The environmental aspect focuses on the suburb morphology, the street structure and spaciousness. • The social aspect focuses on life by activities, street as a place and on the physical structure. Two subjects we found ourselves talking about in each approach were street structure and density. Each analysis result in challenges which are given conceptual answers in the concept chapter, the challenges and the concepts are: • For the transportation aspect: o Enable people to take the shortest route to their destinations outside the site by improving the connections to its surroundings. o Improve the possibilities to take alternative routes within the area by supplying better connections within the site. o Increase the orientation ability within the area by strengthens different characters of the streets. o Increase the number of people travelling with public transportation by providing park and ride facilities, by increasing the density of buildings and people and by making the stations, and the way to them, more visible. o Make more people walk and cycle when doing short trips by prioritize the pedestrians and cyclists in the street environment. • For the commercial aspect: o Have more people on a smaller area by raising the density of housing and people. o Get a lively and long-lived commercial area by using the location of nearby major roads, by establishing centre in the most connected place and by dividing blocks into smaller sizes. • For the environmental aspect: o Get a more walkable suburb by dividing blocks into smaller sizes and by improving the permeability within the…

▼ Practices in winter road maintenance are dependent on the climate and weather impacting roads and the road users’ requirements. As in many other fields of transportation, it is of interest to investigate fuel efficiency potentials in the different aspects of the road maintenance area. The main focus of this thesis was on investigating energy use in winter road maintenance activities in southern Sweden. It is crucial to understand which parameters are of the largest significance in slipperiness, as well as to investigate the weather information that the operations are based on, since the climate is the reason for requiring winter road maintenance in the first place. The original energy use needs to be set, to be able to know whether efficiencies are made. In this thesis, two approaches were taken to understand if existing fuel consumption models for heavy-duty vehicles could be applied within winter road maintenance or whether in-vehicle fuel data such as data from vehicle manufacturers should be used instead. Finally efficiency potentials were explored with the use of a route optimisation programme for winter road maintenance practices.
The climate data analyses showed that frost warnings are the most common type of slipperiness in the southern parts of Sweden. If such warnings were to be under- or overestimated, it could have a large impact on the energy used, since unnecessary slipperiness treatments could be performed. Furthermore, the mobile water depth measurements indicated that it is possible to detect differences in water depth along roads and that exit ramps could be interesting in terms of changed treatments, since the water depths were quite large on those ramps. From the use of the fuel consumption model included in the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute, or VTI, winter model, it was concluded that anti-icing would not be energy efficient in terms of traffic energy use, since drivers tend to drive at higher speeds on salted roads. Snow density and amount would however, impact fuel consumption, which is why the removal of snow could save traffic energy use.
The best method to evaluate energy use during winter road maintenance was the use of in-vehicle data. The existing fuel consumption model used in this thesis, underestimated the fuel use, which implied that the energy use in winter road maintenance practices depends on other aspects than what was stated in the model calculations. Such other aspects seemed to be the weather and way of work that in turn demand significant changes in speed. Changes in speed was also regarded as a potential efficiency measure, as the velocities of the heavy-duty vehicles seemed on average to be below what was estimated as the most fuel-efficient speed for this type of vehicle. Using the route optimisation programme further put a way for evaluating efficiency potentials. It was shown that installing underground heating systems or road surface–installed salt spreaders at strategic locations could save fuel use, as would changing operations from sanding to…

▼ The 85th percentile off-road glances while performing three tasks on an in-vehicle system while driving in a simulator was investigated. The tasks were a radio task, a telephone task and a sound settings task which were performed at three occasions each. The distribution of 85th percentile off-road glance durations for each subject and task showed that durations differed between individuals rather than between tasks. It also turned out that durations longer than 2.00 seconds were not rare and 2 of 16 subjects had durations longer than 2.00 seconds in the radio task. Even though the distribution showed small differences between tasks on an individual level, differences on a group level were found between the tasks. A tendency of a learning effect was found, which implied a decrease in 85th percentile off-road glance durations as the tasks were performed at several occasions. A tendency of a floor effect in 85th percentile off-road glance durations, when the subjects are familiarized with tasks, was also found. Performance on a computerized trail-making test, measuring ability of visual search, motor speed and mental flexibility, was found not to be related with 85th percentile off-road glance durations.

▼ On a national level, the Swedish Transport Administration (STA) constitute the responsibleauthority for national long-term infrastructure planning in Sweden and therefore has animportant role for limit the environmental load from domestic transport. STA Road Ferries isresponsible actor within STA, for national infrastructure planning connected to public marinetransport and has formulated the goal of net zero GHG emissions by year 2045 for the ferryfleet. Today, yearly operation causes around 38,400 tons CO2-equivalents. Emissions fromconstruction, maintenance and deconstruction of road ferries are yet unknown. In order to reachclimate neutrality, identification of emissions from a life cycle perspective is needed. This study analyses environmental performance of a standard road ferry from an LCAperspective to be used as a baseline in future work towards climate neutrality. The LCA wasconducted in SimaPro 8.4.0 and evaluated thorough EPD (2013) methodology according to theEN 15804 standardisation. The report gives initial baseline values for the road ferry Neptunus and identifies daily operationas major hotspot in terms of total environmental impact from analysed impact categories, butalso construction phase is of importance to consider. The study further concludes that based onlong term goal and vision as STA Road Ferries has formulated them to today, a combination ofchange in construction in terms of material choices and design, together with changed fuelalternative is considered necessary in order to reach Vision 45. Future studies are recommended on this subject to reach the long term goal and vision. Forexample, studies that complement the developed model with more project specific process dataand include more components, and comparative LCA’s between different fuel alternatives.
▼ Deep learning for safe autonomous transport is rapidly emerging. Fast and robust perception for autonomous vehicles will be crucial for future navigation in urban areas with high traffic and human interplay. Previous work focuses on extracting full image depth maps, or finding specific road features such as lanes. However, in urban environments lanes are not always present, and sensors such as LiDAR with 3D point clouds provide a quite sparse depth perception of road with demanding algorithmic approaches. In this thesis we derive a novel convolutional neural network that we call AutoNet. It is designed as an encoder-decoder network for pixel-wise depth estimation of an urban drivable free-space road, using only a monocular camera, and handled as a supervised regression problem. AutoNet is also constructed as a classification network to solely classify and segment the drivable free-space in real- time with monocular vision, handled as a supervised classification problem, which shows to be a simpler and more robust solution than the regression approach. We also implement the state of the art neural network ENet for comparison, which is designed for fast real-time semantic segmentation and fast inference speed. The evaluation shows that AutoNet outperforms ENet for every performance metrics, but shows to be slower in terms of frame rate. However, optimization techniques are proposed for future work, on how to advance the frame rate of the network while still maintaining the robustness and performance. All the training and evaluation is done on the Cityscapes dataset. New ground truth labels for road depth perception are created for training with a novel approach of fusing pre-computed depth maps with semantic labels. Data collection with a Scania vehicle is conducted, mounted with a monocular camera to test the final derived models. The proposed AutoNet shows promising state of the art performance in regards to road depth estimation as well as road classification.

▼ The period of ice break-off in spring is a key event for many biogeochemical processes in lakes globallly. The biogeochemical processes occurring at ice break-off have the potential of influencing characteristics of lakes throughout spring and summer, including algal blooms and greenhouse gas emission. This makes it important to study lakes in the period of ice break-off. At ice break-off, soil bacteria from the catchment area usually enter the lake via spring floods and mix with the bacteria already occurring in the lake water. In this study, the effects of mixing soil- and lake microbial communities during ice break-off-like conditions were tested by performing an experiment under controlled conditions in the laboratory. In the experiment, light, microbial community composition and concentration of soil-derived organic matter were manipulated to simulate different conditions associated with ice break-off. The variables investigated were bacterial activity and functionality, measured as cell abundance and enzymatic activity, as well as primary production and concentration of dissolved organic matter. The results showed that a mix of soil and lake microbial communities had enzymatic activity patterns resembling lake communities, and then shifted to being more similar to soil communities. The experiment also showed that degradation of measured dissolved organic matter was not linked to biotic processes, and that the observed decrease was most likely due to photo degradation. Finally, the experiment showed that primary production, here measured as chlorophyll a, was only stimulated by the mixed community with light and added soil dissolved organic matter. The results found in this study are important as they show that microbial communities do alter their function and enzymatic activity based on composition. Furthermore, the result that primary production was only seen in the presence of light, soilderived organic matter and a mixed community of lake and soil bacteria may be seen as an indication that primary producers in lake ecosystems to some extent depend on the inflow of terrestrial microbes and organic matter. It also possible that the coalescence of microbial communities enables the communities to perform tasks they were unable to prior to coalescence (i.e. perform tasks that allows primary production to take place). These results give the basis for further, more detailed studies.

▼ The development of forestry machines is currently heading towards new solutions that reduce their impact on the environment and in particular on the soft forest soil in which the machines operate. The terrain conditions that forestry machines encounter in their regular duties can be very rough, and if the vehicle-ground interaction is not properly controlled cumulative damage can progressively aggravate these conditions and potentially render a route or a zone impracticable, apart from causing a detrimental effect in the forest environment. In addition, new machine solutions must be considerably less damaging, both physically and mentally, to operators. There are certain imposed limits to the whole body vibrations to which industrial workers are exposed daily, which are very hard to fulfil in the context of wood harvesting operations with the current technological state of the machines. Chassis-suspended solutions in the market of forestry vehicles are practically inexistent. Multiple wheeled tracks and/or bogies are current solutions that improve dynamic performance and ground contact area of forestry vehicles, but they do not include suspension elements. Cab and seat suspensions are also used to reduce whole body vibrations, but they are only effective up to a certain degree, due to their relatively short stroke length and directional limitations. The implementation of chassis suspensions in forestry machines is therefore a very interesting open area of research in forestry technology. In this context the XT28, a forwarder prototype with active pendulum arm suspension, is currently being developed by Extractor AB in collaboration with Skogforsk; the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden. The present project focuses in analysis and comparison of the performance that active, semi-active and passive suspension systems with pendulum arm architecture would present, by studying their application in the XT28 machine. These systems have the potential to significantly improve forestry vehicle performance in terms of terrain friendliness and whole body vibrations over an unsuspended system. The task is carried out with the help of Multi-Body Dynamics simulation software along with other simulation and computational tools. Additionally, a general method to optimize and analyse forestry vehicle suspension performance is proposed and applied to the case of the XT28, which provides a fair and standardized way to compare the performance of the different suspensions.

Technological innovations are increasingly associated with modern, developed IT-capabilities in today’s societal evolution. This is seen primarily in the automobile industry where self-driving/automated vehicles has taken a great leap on the global automobile market. Automated vehicles are considered by many to be the technology of the future which mainly involves public transport and transport of goods, but the vision of a completely automated traffic is not left untouched. But because new, foreign technology also can be seen as detrimental to people - what is then required to change this approach? How can it be ensured that technical innovations such as automated vehicles are accepted by the public and used in practice? These are issues that gave rise to the following report with a purpose to present a study that investigates which factors that has an impact on the use of automated vehicles. This has been accomplished through an extensive literature search of previous and current research of the topic, along with interviews and surveys to acquire personal opinions and experiences from existing users of automated technology. The research has eventuated in a knowledge product represented by a table of above…

▼ Cleaning (pre-commercial thinning) is a silvicultural operation, primarily used to improve growing conditions of remaining trees in young stands (ca. 3 - 5 m of height). Cleaning costs are considered high in Sweden and the work is laborious. Selective cleaning with autonomous artificial agents (robots) may rationalise the work, but requires new knowledge. This thesis aims to analyse key issues regarding automation of cleaning; suggesting general solutions and focusing on automatic selection of main-stems. The essential requests put on cleaning robots are to render acceptable results and to be cost competitive. They must be safe and be able to operate independently and unattended for several hours in a dynamic and non-deterministic environment. Machine vision, radar, and laser scanners are promising techniques for obstacle avoidance, tree identification, and tool control. Horizontal laser scannings were made, demonstrating the possibility to find stems and make estimations regarding their height and diameter. Knowledge regarding stem selections was retrieved through qualitative interviews with persons performing cleaning. They consider similar attributes of trees, and these findings and current cleaning manuals were used in combination with a field inventory in the development of a decision support system (DSS). The DSS selects stems by the attributes species, position, diameter, and damage. It was used to run computer-based simulations in a variety of young forests. A general follow-up showed that the DSS produced acceptable results. The DSS was further evaluated by comparing its selections with those made by experienced cleaners, and by a test in which laymen performed cleanings following the system. The DSS seems to be useful and flexible, since it can be adjusted in accordance with the cleaners’ results. The laymen’s results implied that the DSS is robust and that it could be used as a training tool. Using the DSS in automatic, or semi-automatic, cleaning operations should be possible if and when selected attributes can be automatically perceived. A suitable base-machine and thorough research, regarding e.g. safety, obstacle avoidance, and target identification, is needed to develop competitive robots. However, using the DSS as a training-tool for inexperienced cleaners could be an interesting option as of today.
