▼ The present project examines the public discourses of the Danish government from the end of March until the 29th of August, 1943. This period marks the end of the cooperation between the Danish government and the Nazi German occupying force, as the Danish government was unable to quell a domestic resistance movement. The government's statements addressed both the German representatives and the Danish population who were intractably at odds. To uncover how the government attempted to simultaneously appease multiple power differentiated audiences with mutually exclusive aims, the method of persona criticism is used to show the different ideal auditors to whom the government spoke. This thesis finds that rhetorical techniques of strategic ambiguity, minimization of harms, and the hiding the origins of the harms provided the cover the government sought.

▼ Housing is a foundational element in both the American economy and society. The housing bubble and collapse that occurred in the mid to late 2000’s due to reduced credit standards was a substantial shock to the institution of American homeownership. To observe how different segments of the population were impacted as traditional lending standards were reestablished, a review of homeownership by
occupation is examined over a ten-year period beginning just prior to the collapse in 2005. By examining the changes in homeownership probability between the occupations, a comparison can be made on how the different occupations responded to the collapse and the return of traditional lending standards. The results of the analysis revealed that occupations that have higher employment tenure rates and occupations that are connected to the community tended to retain higher probabilities for homeownership even after the collapse. Low wage occupations with high employment mobility displayed the largest decreases in homeownership probability.

▼ Young adulthood is generally a time when an individual
completes a post-secondary education, decides on a career, and
enters the workforce. When individuals are diagnosed with cancer
during this stage in life, they often take time away from school or
work to undergo treatment. The aim of this study was to collect
data to get a richer understanding of the experiences of young
adult cancer survivors who resumed an
occupation of school or work
following cancer treatment. Ten young adult cancer survivors were
interviewed. An interpretative phenomenological approach allowed
for the study of individuals’ lived experiences. An account of
participants’ experiences is presented, organized by 4 master
themes, “making the decision”, “actively adapting to changed
lives”, “receiving support”, and “renewed sense of health and
wellness”. These findings may be informative for cancer patients
and survivors, as well as stakeholders, as they often have access
to limited resources.

▼ Leukemia veren valkosolujen syöpä. Sen neljä yleisintä muotoa ovat akuutti myelooinen leukemia (engl. lyhenne AML), akuutti lymfaattinen leukemia (ALL), krooninen myelooinen leukemia (CML) ja krooninen lymfaattinen leukemia (CLL). Vaikka monilla geneettisillä ja elintapoihin ja –ympäristöön liittyvillä tekijöillä on arvioitu olevan yhteyttä leukemian riskiin, useimmissa tapauksissa näyttö on epäyhtenäistä. Tutkimukseni tavoitteena oli arvioida eräiden ammattialtistusten yhteyttä aikuisten leukemiariskiin. Tutkimus pohjautuu pohjoismaisen ammattisyöpätutkimussarjan (Nordic Occupational Cancer Studies, NOCCA) yhteensä 14,9 miljoonan pohjoismaisen henkilön aineistoon. Näiden henkilöiden ammattitiedot 30-64 vuoden iässä ja tieto syöpään sairastumisesta vuoteen 2003-2005 asti saatiin kansallisista rekistereistä.
Tutkimuksessa I verrattiin 53 ammattiluokan leukemiariskiä yleisen väestön leukemiariskiin (AML-tapaukset (n=18 811), CLL-tapaukset (n=20 462) ja muut leukemiatapaukset (n=15 570)).
Arvioitaessa lentohenkilökunnan altistumista kosmiselle säteilylle altistusarvioissa havaittiin selviä eroja NOCCA-JEM:n ja yksilöllisiin mittaustietoihin perustuvien arvioiden välillä.; Leukemia is a cancer of blood. ▼ Although the term arises in French film criticism, "noir" has long been associated with American cinema and a certain, recognizable type of visual and thematic style. Through a return to the French critics of the late 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s this dissertation defamiliarizes and redefines noir's value to film and French studies by demonstrating its negatively constitutive role in the negotiation of French national identity and the central place of the
Occupation in any discussion of French noir. By locating noir within criticism and performing close readings of the critical archive, which includes figures as diverse as Georges Sadoul and André Bazin, Lucien Rebatet and François Truffaut, I argue that noir critical discourse is defined by a tension between the category's ever-changing value and the efforts of those who deploy it to fix the meaning of the nation before, during, and after the
Occupation through careful omissions of the historical, collective memory. Because noir is central to debates on how the nation should and, more precisely, should not be represented, I also resist conventional, generic approaches to advance that individual films noirs are secondary to noir critical discourse. Particular films, such as those by Julien Duvivier, Jean-Pierre Melville, and also Henri Decoin's lesser-known Non coupable (Not Guilty [1947]) may thus only be viewed as "noir" insofar as they bring into frame aspects of recent French history and sociocultural identity left out of dominant narratives of the national imaginary. Ultimately, through a focus on the critical and filmic archives and the dynamic value of noir during an era marked by the
Occupation, I wrest noir scholarship from the hegemony of Hollywood and the rigidity of conventionally generic readings to restage it as the beginning of a new conversation. Film noir, that is to say, French film noir as I articulate it here brings together questions of not only national cinema, but of the larger obstacles facing any articulation of national identity related to the era that shares noir's name: the
Occupation, the dark years, les années noires.

▼ Through a socio-historical case study of the United State Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK) from 1945 to 1949, this dissertation examines the relationships between race, gender, and U.S. empire. I argue that the military is not just a repressive arm of the state but an ideological arm of the state that actively participates in social formations, blurring the lines between civilian and military realms.
Emphasizing the centrality of raced and gendered power in military occupations and in the maintenance of U.S. empire, I propose a sociology of military occupations that centers three entry points of inquiry: 1) knowledge creation, 2) technologies of rule, and 3) conflicts, contradictions, and controversies. Each chapter of the dissertation tackles one of the three entry points to study the organization and character of power during the
occupation.
The first entry point, knowledge creation, deals with the framing of the
occupation and the boundaries created to legitimate the
occupation and de-legitimate local actions towards self-determination. In chapter two, “Trans-Colonial Racial Formation: Constructing the “Irish of the Orient”,” I reveal how the U.S. pulled racial knowledge gained through previous colonial experiences and from British and Japanese empires to construct the racial script of the “Irish of the Orient.” I find the racial formation of Koreans during the U.S. military
occupation exemplified the relational, non-linear, and trans-colonial process of racial formation. The second entry point, technologies of power and rule, focuses on the organizational aspects of governance. The objective of this entry point is to understand how power is organized and what institutional, structural, and social technologies facilitate both physical and psychological violence. In chapter three, “The Legal Infrastructure of Raced and Gendered Violence,” I examine law as a technology of rule. By looking both at the formal and informal legal systems within the military government, this chapter demonstrates that the pluralistic nature of U.S. military’s legal structures produced an environment that institutionalized raced and gendered violence during the
occupation. The third entry point asks researchers to identify and examine moments of conflict, contradiction, or controversy as a way to reveal how domestic hierarchies of citizenship and social formations are being tested, defied, reified, or modified abroad. This allows us to see how military bases and occupations abroad become testing grounds for how power is organized domestically. Chapter four, “Regulating Marriage and Race: Marital and Martial Masculinities in the Making of American Manhood,” examines a conflict and contradiction that the military government had to address—the marriage of U.S. soldiers to Koreans. By focusing on the problem of managing masculinities through marriage, this chapter demonstrates how martial masculinity defies the civilian-military binary and how the military as an ideological institution actively maintains racialized hierarchies…

▼ This thesis explores occupational fatalities to American males for the years 1998
and 1999. The focus is on predicting the likelihood that the individual will sustain an
occupational injury resulting in death based on an occupational status score.
Demographic variables measuring Southern residence, race, ethnicity, marital status,
education and age were also included in analyses. Research questions include whether or
not individuals in higher status occupations are at a decreased risk of sustaining an
occupational fatality, and how the demographic variables included effect occupational
fatalities. Using data from death certificates allowed me to measure the individual’s
occupational status based on their “usual occupation” and find out whether or not
differences exist. The thesis involves two analyses, one with the sample comprised of
only males between the ages of 25 and 55 and one including only married males between
the ages of 25 and 55. Logistic regression is employed as the method of analysis to model
the odds of the risk of sustaining an occupational fatality that results in death.
The results of the first model found only marital status to be positively and
significantly related to occupational fatalities. Black, Hispanic, South and education were
found to be negatively related to occupational fatalities. The main hypothesis of this
thesis was not supported, however because the regression shows that with each increase on the occupational status index, no significant increase or decrease occurred in
sustaining an occupational injury that resulted in death.
In the second regression that included only married males, many of the
relationships no longer existed. Hispanic and the education variable both lost statistical
significance. The only variables to maintain significance were black and South, which
were both associated with a decreased risk of sustaining an occupational injury that
resulted in death. Problems with the occupational status index as a predictor for the
likelihood of sustaining an occupational fatality and restrictions of the data may be the
main issue that resulted in a lack of findings.

▼ This paper presents the analysis of the determinants of gender wage differential in the
Ethiopian Public Sector using the 2006 Urban Employment and Unemployment Survey. The
Oaxaca (1973) and Neumark (1988) techniques are used in decomposing the gender pay gap
based on two specifications of wage equation. One of the specifications constitutes selectivity
correction terms while the other does not. Results from both specifications show that 52 to 61
percent of the gender wage gap is explained by observable characteristics whereas the
remaining proportion is the unexplained part of the differential. Differences in human capital
endowment and
occupation contribute nearly the same amount to the explained part of the
earnings differential. The result of the analysis fails to support the hypothesis of no gender
wage discrimination in the public sector. Based on this result, the study implied the need for
allocating a substantial amount of resources on girls’ education and the strengthening of the
legal and institutional framework that penalizes wage discrimination against women.

▼ Cross-occupational collaboration is difficult, as work and occupations scholars show, but can be overcome in a variety of ways. To better understand cross-occupational collaboration, I propose that researchers look at the process of collaboration: how actors build, sustain, and effectively use cross-occupational collaborations to affect their environments. Chapter 1 examines how actors build cross-occupational relationships, the stuff of collaboration opportunities. Chapter 2 is about how actors sustain collaborative projects. Chapter 3 is about the conditions in which collaborations might create more effective strategies.

▼ Disruption to the life narrative is a common long-term experience following acquired brain injury. It can lead to barriers in being able to fulfil roles and engage in daily activities and occupations. Disruption occurs not only for the person who sustains the brain injury, but is also an experience for significant others in their lives. This narrative study gathered participants’ personal ‘sense making’ of life events following such disruption. Extended narrative interviews were combined with a photo-elicitation technique for six people with acquired brain injury and six people who had a significant other in their life with an acquired brain injury, all living in a rural area. It involved discussion around the patterning of their daily activities and roles both pre and post injury. Narrative analysis led to individual case studies of barriers and opportunities to lives impacted by brain injury. Issues were highly individualised and whilst the rural context presented an advantageous place to live for some due to tranquillity, it was less advantageous for others. However, synthesis of findings across cases considered the narrative form produced by the twelve accounts. This revealed that individuals drew on attributes of previous roles and careers to construct meaning and manage their lives, even when they could no longer engage with past roles and careers. Approaches to self-management post injury appeared to follow a pattern of drawing on internal schema underpinned by values, skills and meaning of previous roles and careers. This constitutes a form of capital built up from life pre-injury that is being utilised to achieve health and wellbeing, which I have called ‘embodied occupational capital’. An opportunity to work with individuals whose lives are affected by acquired brain injury has been offered, by way of focusing on this ‘embodied occupational capital’ to empower them to make positive change.

▼ In this thesis, I study how routinization-the process of codifying and automating job tasks-influences regional employment change. I examine two questions. First, does routinization drive employment change in US metropolitan areas after controlling for
occupation and industry mix? Second, does overall employment change occur more strongly through occupational change than industry change across US metropolitan areas?
My analysis finds that routinization is a major determinant of both total and relative changes across industry-
occupation employment groups; changes in industry group employment have been more important influences on overall employment change than changes in
occupation group employment; the difference between
occupation group and industry group effects are lessening over time; and joint industry and
occupation effects are decreasingly less important in understanding employment change.
These findings underscore the importance of task – change in determining employment change and in understanding industries versus occupations as categories for analyzing the evolution of regional economies.

▼ Scholarship on Japan’s
Occupation Period (1945-1952) has focused on the ways in which Japan was transformed from an imperial power to a democratic nation. While such work provides valuable information about how the Supreme Commanders for the Allied Powers (SCAP) affected Japan’s political climate following the end of the Asia-Pacific War, they gloss over other ways in which the SCAP government came in contact with the Japanese people. The topic of health is one that has seldom been explored within the context of the Allied
Occupation of Japan, despite the fact that the task of restoring and maintaining health brought SCAP personnel and policies into daily contact with both the Japanese government and people. By focusing on the disease tuberculosis, which boasted the highest mortality rate not only during the
Occupation Period, but also for most of the first-half of the twentieth century, this paper hopes to illuminate the ways in which health brought the Allied Powers and Japanese into constant contact.
The managing of tuberculosis in the
Occupation Period represented a major success for SCAP’s Public Health and Welfare (PH&W) section. The new medical findings, medicines, and management and education systems that the PH&W incorporated into the Japanese health systems played a large role in the PH&W’s success in controlling tuberculosis within Japan. The PH&W’s expertise in dealing with tuberculosis reconnected Japan with the international medical community it had forfeited during the Asia-Pacific War. In doing so the PH&W also helped dispel the social stigma that surrounded tuberculosis and hindered earlier attempts to halt the disease’s spread.
The management of tuberculosis was a major success for the Japanese government as well. While the PH&W section was quick to point out that their introduction of modern science into Japan lead to the defeat of tuberculosis, many of the methods used to combat the disease were familiar to the Japanese government and medical community. While SCAP may have provided new drugs like streptomycin, Japanese medical professionals were already well versed in the production and distribution of vaccines. Japanese citizens had also previously been exposed to many of the practices, such as regular tuberculosis screenings that the PH&W section mandated. The Japanese governments ample supply of manpower was also a crucial, though often overlooked, component of tuberculosis control in the
Occupation period.
Tuberculosis control was achieved during the
Occupation Period through the cooperation of both SCAP and the Japanese government and medical community. After explaining why tuberculosis remained a problem in the early twentieth century, despite Japanese medical communities efforts to dispel the social stigma surrounding tuberculosis and to manage the disease, this paper examines why tuberculosis rates grew at their fastest pace ever following the end of the Asia-Pacific War. The early years of the
Occupation brought both immediate changes instituted by the PH&W section and practices…

▼ The first chapter studies the rate of long-term unemployment, which spiked during the Great Recession. To help explain this, I exploit the systematic and counter-cyclical differences in unemployment duration across occupations. This heterogeneity extends the tail of the unemployment duration distribution, which is necessary to account for the observed level of long-term unemployment and its increase since 2007. This chapter introduces a model in which unemployment duration and occupation are linked; it measures the effects of occupation-specific shocks and skills on unemployment duration. Here, a worker will be paid more for human capital in his old occupation but a bad shock may make those jobs scarce. Still, their human capital partly ``attaches'' them to their prior occupation, even when searching there implies a longer expected duration. Hence, unemployment duration rises and becomes more dispersed across occupations. Redistributive shocks and business cycles, as in the Great Recession, exacerbate this effect.
For quantitative discipline, the model matches data on the wage premium to occupational experience and the co-movement of occupations' productivity. The distribution of duration is then endogenous. For comparison's sake, if a standard model with homogeneous job seekers matches the job finding rate, then it also determines expected duration and understates it. That standard model implies just over half of the long-term unemployment in 1976-2007 and almost no rise in the recent recession. But, with heterogeneity by occupation, this chapter nearly matches long-term unemployment in the period 1976-2007 and 70% of its rise during the Great Recession.
The second chapter studies the link between wage growth and the match of a worker's occupation and skills. The notion here is that if human capital accumulation depends on match quality, poor matches can have long-lasting effects on lifetime earnings. I build a model that incorporates such a mechanism, in which human capital accumulation is affected by imperfect information about one's self. This informational friction leads to matches in which a worker accumulates human capital more slowly and has weaker earnings growth.
To get direct evidence, the chapter pieces together two sets of data on the skills used by an occupation and the skills a worker is particularly good at. Data on occupations describes occupations by the intensity with which they use many dimensions of workers' knowledge, skills and abilities. To pair, we have data on tests taken by respondents in a panel that tracks occupations and earnings. The test designers created a mapping between their tests and the occupational descriptors, which allows us to create two measures. The first measure of match quality is just the dot product between the dimensions of workers' skills and utilization rate of these skills by occupations. The second measure mismatch relative to an optimal matching computed using the Gale-Shapley algorithm for stable pairs. In both, worse matches have significantly slower…

▼ The founding philosophies of occupational therapy and the medical model have been in conflict within the practice of occupational therapy for more than 60 years. This conflict is especially evident in the hand therapy arena due to the prevalence of the medical model. There is extensive literature outside this specialty area indicating that an
occupation-based approach is beneficial for patients with whom it is used yet there is a lack of research on
occupation-based hand therapy. Clearly describing and defining what constitutes
occupation-based hand therapy can help promote
occupation-based practice in keeping with the philosophy of the profession and facilitate efficacy research.
Methods: The qualitative approach of phenomenology as described by Moustakas was used. Ten participants who were: 1) occupational therapists, 2) with more than five years of experience, 3) and who self identified as
occupation-based, were recruited using criterion sampling. Data was collected through audio recorded telephone interviews and electronic mail. Analysis began with individual cases. Data was reduced and distilled into themes and descriptions of the experience of providing
occupation-based hand therapy for each participant. The individual analysis was followed by a cross-case analysis revealing overarching themes and a synthesis description of the experience of providing
occupation-based therapy.
Results: Five themes were uncovered that describe the experience of providing
occupation-based hand therapy. 1) Influences: describes elements that influenced the participants' experience with providing
occupation-based hand therapy. 2)
Occupation and Professional Identity: described how the participants think about being an occupational therapist and how others perceive occupational therapy. 3) The Psychosocial Elements of Practice: addresses the interpersonal and psychological considerations in
occupation-based hand therapy described by the participants. 4) The Procedural Elements of Practice, deals with the tasks associated with providing
occupation-based hand therapy that were described by the participants. 5) Negotiating a Place: addresses the difficulties of
occupation-based practice in a traditional hand therapy setting and the ways the participants have dealt with these difficulties.

▼ There is a persistent gap in the durations of unemployment between races in the U.S. labor market. This paper examines one possible explanation for that gap, differences in job history and human capital acquired on the job. Specific human capital can lead to a mismatch between offers and expectations that can lead to a longer unemployment spell. It is found that the number of jobs reduces the length of unemployment, while the length of the most recent tenure at an
occupation is found to increase it. However, neither of these factors explain much of the differences in unemployment durations between race and ethnic groups.

▼ peer-reviewed
Bodies, Power, Resistance is an examination of how Palestinian women in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) experience different subjectification as a result of continued Israeli occupation, and how they enact resistances to these processes of subjectification. This project starts from the argument that within the field of Critical Security Studies, insufficient attention is paid to how women’s daily lived experiences of subjectification. These daily-lived experiences can indicate how exercises of power aimed at securitising have the effect of creating subjects. Subjectification functions by creating subjects who are secure, (in this case Jewish citizens of Israel) and subjects who are (in)secure, (residents in the occupied Palestinian territories). In turn, subjects made (in)secure by these exercises of power will enact resistance to their subjectification. This project draws its theoretical foundations from Foucault’s model of power and resistance, and his theory of the dispositif, or ‘apparatus’ as well as how Butler, Delueze, and Agamben have expanded Foucault’s theories. In particular, when starting from the daily lived experiences of women, examinations of subjectification and resistance should examine how securitising practices are directed at gendered bodies to control and discipline subjects.
In the case of Palestinian women in the occupied territories, subjectifications result from multiple elements, all of which together make up the broader apparatus of the Israeli occupation. Elements of the occupation such as the separation barrier or curfews function differently upon different Palestinian women, but share the common feature of being directed at the control, regulation and de-legitimising of Palestinians with the result of forming and subjugating Palestinians as de facto subjects of Israeli power. Taking inspiration from Foucault’s view that power and resistance can always be found together, Israeli practices that result in subjectification of Palestinians will necessarily be accompanied by Palestinian resistance. Therefore, when examining Palestinian women’s experiences of subjectification it is also essential to examine Palestinian women’s daily-lived experiences of resistance to that subjectification. Research for this project was conducted in the West Bank of the oPt, wherein I conducted narrative interviews with women. These narrative interviews enhance the project’s understanding of subjectifications and resistances as embedded in daily-lived experience.
One element of the apparatus of Palestinian women’s resistance has been suicide bombing/martyrdom operations, which, I argue, demonstrate the embodied nature of resistance to an occupation aimed at corporeal control and regulation. The instances of suicide bombing/martyrdom operations form only one aspect of women’s resistance however, and should be analysed in tandem with other elements of women’s resistance. Resistances to subjectification, like exercises of power, occur on multiple different levels, through different…

▼ The end of World War Two saw the influx of millions of German-speakers from Central and Eastern Europe into a physically and economically devastated Germany that had lost a quarter of its pre-1938 territory. Yet one region in Germany remained largely closed to the refugees and expellees: the French zone of military
occupation. In 1945, the French occupying authorities refused entry to the refugees, and though they eventually took in some over the course of their
occupation, it was an order of magnitude lower than those absorbed into the American, British and Soviet zones.
This thesis investigates the reasons behind this initial French position of refusal and its evolution from the immediate end of hostilities in 1945 to the creation of the West German state in 1949. In doing so, it places the question of the refugees in the broader context of France’s overall war aims and its policy towards post-war Germany and Europe. The same security, economic and demographic concerns that drove France’s Germany policy also shaped its response to the refugee crisis; the issue of the refugees and expellees usefully illustrates the trajectory French policy took over the
occupation period.

Untitled occupation of the State property generates patrimonial, financial and economic damages. This phenomenon therefore prevents the owner and manager of the State property from effectively benefitting from their domain and hinders any economic development of the State property by slowing or stopping further investment into the State property. Untitled occupation is also a phenomenon that goes beyond the interests of the owner and manager of the domain since it is likely to create a competitive disadvantage between regular and illegal occupants. While it is impossible to fight untitled occupation of state property in the long term due to its protean and recurrent nature, the only solution for the owner and manager of the domain is to effectively manage each situation of untitled occupancy on a case-by-case basis. This thesis aims to present a series of answers that can be adapted to the multiplicity and specificities of cases of untitled occupation with each having the same objective of ending untitled occupation of the State property. To implement the most effective responses, it is first necessary to know the legal status of the untitled occupier and to demonstrate that this phenomenon results from diverse circumstances that may be taken into account in the management of untitled occupation. Depending on the kind of untitled occupation, two types of responses can then be implemented: a contentious response which is the classic response to occupation without title, or a…

This study intends to analyse the nine years of the Portuguese occupation of French Guiana (1809-1817), a topic that in general has not yet been very well addressed by historiography. The invasion and this occupation are approached here having the French political issues of the Revolution, Consulate and Empire as essential starting points for this work. The arrival of the Napoleonic troops in Portugal brought about the transfer of the Portuguese Court to America, and then later also the invasion of Guiana by the troops of the Captaincy of Grão-Pará. This thesis aims to analyse how the Portuguese organised the government structures of this occupied territory regarding the legal, fiscal and commercial spheres. The comparison between the French and the Portuguese administrations is the leading thread of this study, and it allows us to distinguish the adaptations undertaken by the Portuguese administrators in order to preserve and to govern their conquest. Focusing on an atypical colony within the French colonial empire, due to…

This dissertation attempts to further the study of the denunciation of Jews in Paris during the German Occupation by exploring in more detail the various institutional and social contexts of the phenomenon of denunciation to measure their importance in the larger context of occupied Paris. First, it explores institutional mechanisms who contributed to the introduction of a German and a French anti-Semitic legislation, to maintain an environment conductive to the development of denunciation in the context of this regulation, notably through propaganda and repressive operations that targeted the “enemies” of the Vichy regime as well as the German occupant, while providing the authors of denunciation with relays ready to accept and synthesize the accusations against the Jews. Second, because denunciation is at its origin a “popular” phenomenon, that is to say it originates from individuals, this dissertation analyses the various characteristics of the context of the Occupation and their consequences on the French population in an attempt to identify the elements that were put to use by denouncers in their accusations against Jews, as well as the motives that influenced their decision to contact the authorities. This section also analyzes the multitude of rhetorical strategies used by denouncers in their effort to convince the authorities of the merits of their approach. Finally, it proposes a general picture of the “social” characteristics of the victims and authors of denunciation through a quantitative study of…

▼ For two decades, scholars have urged the occupational therapy profession to prioritize placing
occupation at the center of curricular designs and educational activities in order to advance occupational science and therapy (e.g., Yerxa, 1998; Whiteford & Wilcock, 2001).
Subject-centered education has been proposed as one model for occupational therapy education (Hooper, 2006, 2010). However, the elements of the model and their transactions required further empirical development. Elements included the
subject of
occupation, other topics, and a community of knowers (Palmer, 1998). Video data were collected from U.S. occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant programs as part of a larger study by Hooper, Krishnagiri, Price, Bilics, Taff, and Mitcham (in press) and secondarily analyzed. The thematic analysis identified which elements of a
subject-centered model were present and described the interactions between elements. A reconstructed narrative of each program's video helped to illustrate the major findings. All elements of the
subject-centered model seemed to be present, however interactions were more prevalent than individual elements. For instance,
occupation was most often taught in relation to topics and people. Perhaps because of its complexity,
occupation was rarely taught on its own and seemed a challenge to teach. The model of
subject-centered education provided a valuable conceptual framework for identifying how
occupation was taught and learned in the classroom.

I tried to understand how the social relations between the participants of the occupation had been produced and reproduced and in order to describe it in order to interpret it, I had as a guideline what led to the construction of three thousand black tarpaulins shacks, built from the 20th of May 2016. Some of these remained until August 2017. From a socio-anthropological perspective, through a militant observation, carried out between July 2014 and July 2017, I present the results of a work of observation, approximation and later participation with the MTST, coupled with semi-structured interviews and bibliographic discussion. Throughout the research, two hypotheses have emerged. The first one is that the practices of the MTST, like its model of organization and political method, directly affect the daily occupation and the formation of
identities of the occupiers. The second hypothesis refers to the social similarities among those who occupy, represent a portion of those who lives from work, but are unable to obtain the means necessary for having access to decent housing.

▼ Background: Occupational therapy (OT) plays an important role in providing early childhood interventions for children with developmental delay. While paediatric OT has long been guided by developmental principles, occupation-centred interventions have been promoted during the last decades, but no unifying definition exists about the core features. Aims/Objectives: The aim of this paper is to (a) identify and describe how occupation-based and occupation-focused interventions are demonstrated in paediatric occupational therapy for infants and young children with developmental delay, (b) identify which outcomes these interventions address and (c) analyse which outcome measures are used. Material and Methods: Eight databases and 15 OT journals were searched. Included studies were peer-reviewed primary sources published in English since 1999, selected based on the terminology proposed by Fisher (2013). Nineteen papers met inclusion criteria. Results: Eight occupation-based, two occupation-focused and nine occupation-based and occupation-focused interventions were identified. Outcomes related mainly to occupational and play skill acquisition as well as mastery of co-occupations. A limited number of occupation-focused outcome measures was implemented. Conclusions: Several occupation-centred interventions have been researched. Gaps in knowledge exist regarding measures taking into account (co-)occupational performance and young children’s perspective. Significance: OTs might want to expand their scope of practice to include all occupational domains and increase parent-delivered interventions in natural environments. Measures used should be relevant to occupational performance and take into account the parent’s and children’s view. Use of uniform terminology can aid identification of evidence and clear placement of OT among other professionals.

▼ The objective of the dissertation was to prove that after World War II, between May 1945, and the statehood of the Federal Republic of Germany in September 1949 1. The Germans in the three western
occupation zones of the United States, Great Britain, and France could not have survived mass starvation without the food aid provided by the Allied military forces and the United States starting in late 1945. 2. The contributions the western Allies levied from the people of their respective
occupation zones in form of
occupation costs, reparations, restitutions, and confiscations by far surpassed all Allied food aid, as well as the financial aid provided by the United States through the European Recovery Program, better known as the Marshall Plan. 3. The German economy would have survived/restarted without Marshall Plan aid. However, it would have taken much more time to catch up with the other European economies. Looking at the pure
occupation costs levied in the three western
occupation zones, these costs surpassed all Allied aid by far.
Occupation costs of 5,944 billion face Allied aid figures from 2,691 billion to 3,277 billion, a rough ratio of 2:1. Computed with the lowest amount of reparations of 4.44 billion, shifts the ratio of
occupation costs/reparations to Allied aid to 3.5:1, a surprising and not anticipated result of the study.

▼ I would like to investigate what actually took place in terms of freedom of speech in Japan during the American
occupation, 1945-1952. I will ask whether the restrictions on Japanese discursive space during the period under study came only from American censorship and propaganda.
It is also necessary to compare other cases of American
occupation in order to answer this question better, by presenting a contrast. Germany will be the most suitable case to compare the conditions and effects associated with American
occupation, with special reference to the problem of freedom of speech and the effect of
occupation upon it.
Japan and Germany were simultaneously occupied by the Allied Powers after World War II. Both had during the war experienced limitations on freedom of expression; this included the inspection of private letters and state control over the press in wartime. Afterwards, both nations became members of the Western world and militarily allies of the U.S., experiencing high economic growth. Though Japan and (West) Germany have many such similar circumstances, there have been some clear differences with regard to freedom of speech and the press. With this initial comparison in mind, then, I am led to ask what causes lay behind the differences in conditions of freedom of speech in Japan and Germany.

▼ Significance and integrity are key concepts for archaeology, and how they are judged is determined by an archaeologists perceptions of disturbance. This thesis explicitly considers these concepts and how they relate to evolutionary theory and National Register eligibility. A site with known disturbance was chosen to determine whether it could be judged significant assuming that there was no disturbance. Controlled surface collection, magnetometer survey, excavation and landowner interview data were used to determine whether what made the site significant had been lost due to disturbance. The results indicate that the co-mingling of occupations in the plow zone normally would have prevented the site from being determined eligible. However, because of the clusters of Gulf Formational-period diagnostics and intact Early Archaic midden, the site was determined significant. If future work were to be performed,
occupation-based work focusing on the artifact clusters and the Archaic midden is recommended.

▼ This narrative inquiry explores occupational
therapists’ experiences of doing occupation – attempting to work in
ways that are congruent with their professional commitment to using
activities (occupations) as therapy, and focusing on enabling
clients to participate in their valued occupations as the goal for
therapy. The inquiry emerged from my own experiences as an
occupational therapy clinician, manager and educator. Four
occupational therapists with diverse experiences as occupational
therapists shared their experiences of doing occupation during
individual conversations with me and group discussions, over an
eleven-month period in 2010 - 2011. Field texts included
tape-recorded and transcribed conversations of individual and group
discussions, field notes related to these conversations, a digital
story created by one participant, journal entries, research poems
and images, and collages made by two of the participants. Research
texts were composed with each participant, in the form of narrative
accounts that inquire into participants’ experiences, using the
three-dimensional narrative inquiry space with dimensions of
temporality, sociality, and place. Four wonders related to doing
occupation that I marked as I looked across the four narrative
accounts for resonance and for bumping up places are discussed
further: (1) reaching for the real in practice, (2) identities, (3)
complex issues related to the heart, mind and soul of occupational
therapy (Wood, 2004) and, (4) participants’ strategies for
resisting or escaping systemic pressures to practice in ways which
are not compatible with their personal practical knowledge. These
were explored through further inquiry into participants’
experiences and through looking at the occupational
therapy/occupational science literature. The personal, practical
and social implications of this inquiry are discussed – how my
practices as an educator will change, how educators and clinicians
might be able to use this inquiry to reflect on their practice
experiences, and why and how narrative inquiry may provide a
valuable methodological approach for occupational therapy and
occupational sciences researchers.

▼ This dissertation studies three forms of mobility in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first chapter uses newly collected data from Union Army widows' pension files to isolate the causal effect of women's income on their decisions about marriage. Making use of exogenous variation in the processing time of pension applications, I show that receiving a pension caused widows to remarry at a significantly slower rate. This suggests that women's income directly influenced marital outcomes, largely by making women more selective in the marriage market. The second chapter explores the extent to which nineteenth century internal migrants in the United States were motivated by the possibility of upward occupational mobility. Drawing on the literature on contemporary migrant selection and sorting, I argue that workers with greater potential for occupational upgrading should have selected themselves out of counties with low skill premiums and sorted themselves into counties with high skill premiums. Using linked data from the U.S. Census and county-level wage data, I present results consistent with this argument. The third chapter of the dissertation (co-authored with Claudia Olivetti and Daniele Paserman) examines intergenerational income mobility across three generations between 1850 and 1930. Making use of the socioeconomic content of names, pseudo-panels of three generations are created by grouping samples of individuals by first name. Using G1, G2, and G3 to index generations one two and three, respectively, we find a significant correlation between G1 and G3, controlling for G2. We also find differences in this correlation by gender, suggesting that the process by which income was transferred from fathers to daughters was not the same as the process by which it was transferred from fathers to sons.

▼ BACKGROUND
Within the military, soldiers perform physically demanding manual tasks, many of which involve careful or precise object placement. Precision, in terms of limb position or force during isometric single-joint contractions has been found to significantly reduce endurance capacity. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the effects of precision in terms of object placement during functional lifting tasks.
RESEARCH QUESTION
The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the physical effects of precision on three common military task aspects: maximal lift capacity, maximal acceptable weight of lift and submaximal repetitive lifting to task failure. As one of the first studies to investigate precision during functional whole body lifting tasks, the strategies used in this thesis aim to identify or direct future research to further examine the specific mechanisms limiting precise lifting capacity.
METHODS
A series of laboratory-based studies were conducted in two sections. Section One investigated the effect of precision on maximal lift capacity (Chapter 2) and maximal acceptable weight of lift (Chapter 3) at both an absolute and relative lift height, in subject cohort one. Section Two investigated the effect of precision on repetitive lift performance to task failure (Chapter 4) on subject cohort two. Physical differences between the precise and non-precise lifting conditions were assessed by muscle activity, lift duration, stance duration, rating of perceived exertion, heart rate and box control.
MAJOR CONCLUSIONS
Three major outcomes emerged from this investigation:
i) Maximal lift capacity was reduced by 32-40% regardless of lift height when precision was required;
ii) Reductions in mass were also seen for maximal acceptable weight of lift but were observed only at an absolute lift height; and,
iii) Precision decreased repetitive lift duration to volitional task failure by 72%.
These results suggest precise object placement should be considered when analysing manual lifting tasks in the design of physical employment standard assessments within the military and other occupations. If this is not considered, a mismatch between physical capacity and task demands may arise, resulting in an increased risk of injury. Future research is required to specifically identify the mechanisms responsible for the limited capacity observed when precision is required.
