In a society that is becoming increasingly reliant on information, it is necessary for information to be stored efficiently and safely. Database technology is used to store large chunks of information efficiently, while database security is concerned with storing information securely. More complex computer applications (CAD/CAM, multimedia and Groupware) led to then development of object-oriented programming, with object-oriented databases following shortly after. Object-oriented databases store the data of object-oriented systems efficiently and permanently. They provide a rich set of semantic structures that allows them to be used in applications where other database models are simply inadequate. In federations consisting of several interconnected databases, security plays a vital role in the proper management of information. This work describes a Secure Distributed Object Environment (SDOE) infrastructure. It is designed to be implementation-oriented, on which strict theoretic prototypes such as SPOP (Selfprotecting Object Prototype) can be built. SPOP is a prototype of a secure object-oriented database and is based on the SPO database model of Olivier. To describe federated database architectures (used by SDOE and SPOP), it is necessary to understand the architecture of federated database systems. Reference architectures for federated database systems are discussed first and a comparison is drawn between two prominent reference architectures. We proposed a generalised reference architecture based on these two architectures. created in order to make the use of object-oriented programming in a distributed environment as problem free as possible. A marshal buffer structure will be discussed thirdly. The latter structure is used to contain procedure parameters during an RPC (Remote Procedure Call). Fourthly, the communications infrastructure necessary to support higher-level services is discussed. The infrastructure is implemented in Linux (a UNIX variant), and this approach has provided several interesting challenges. The fifth discussion will deal with the requirements for a name service. A name service is necessary if objects were to be used transparently (without reference to their current locations in the federation).

This dissertation seeks to improve on the state of the art for creating systems integrating modules written in both a logic and a statically-typed object-oriented language. Logic languages are well suited for declaratively solving computational problems that require knowledge representation and reasoning. Modern object- oriented programming languages benefit from mature software ecosystems featuring rich libraries and developer tools. The existence of several integration approaches testifies the interest of both communities in techniques for facilitating the creation of hybrid systems. In this way, systems developed in an object-oriented language can integrate modules written in a logic language that are more convenient for solving declarative problems. On the logic side, non-trivial declarative applications can take advantage of the existence of large software ecosystems such as those surrounding contemporary object-oriented languages. The combination of both paradigms allows a programmer to use the best language available for a given task. Existing integration approaches provide different levels of abstractions for dealing with the integration concern (i.e., the required interoperability in order for logic routines to access the object-oriented world, and vice versa). Some of them still require significant amounts of boilerplate code which hinders their adoption and steepens their learning curve. Others provide a high degree of integration transparency and automation which simplifies their usage. However, many of those approaches often impose strong assumptions about the architecture of a system (e.g., a logic program must run embedded in an object-oriented one) thus suffering from portability issues. Furthermore, most approaches provide limited support for custom context-dependent reification of objects in the logic world and custom mappings of arbitrary logic terms to objects in the object-oriented world. To address these problems, we introduce our portable and customisable approach for bidirectional integration between a logic and a statically-typed object-oriented language. This approach enables a transparent and (semi-) automatic communication between routines in these two worlds. In addition, it provides a customisable context- dependent mechanism for defining how artefacts in one language should be reified in the other language. A concrete implementation is provided as a portable Java–Prolog interoperability framework. To ensure portability, our framework has been made compatible with three open source Prolog engines (SWI, YAP and XSB) by means of drivers. We validated our approach through case studies requiring a seamless integration of declarative programs in Prolog with object-oriented programs in Java.

▼ The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive methodology for implementing a digital map generalisation system under the object-oriented paradigm. The study is based on the consideration of the theory of map generalisation and the methodology of object-orientation. Object-oriented programming has been recognised as a better programming method for constructing complicated software systems in the sense of less expenditure and greater efficiency. It increases the potentiality to extend software systems and re-uses the resources, though it does not increase computation power. So the object-oriented paradigm is selected for modelling the map generalisation system. The research includes four parts, describing the concept of map, the requirements of a map generalisation system, the object-oriented design method, and the map generalisation system design. Three contributions of the research are: 1. A new cartographical communication model based on digital processes is given. This model is the conceptual fundament to define a static structure of the object-oriented map generalisation system. Based on this model, the map structure in the object-oriented world is defined. In this structure, the map concept is divided into three parts - logical map, graphical map, and dynamic relationships of the map. 2. A conceptual framework for map generalisation with the feature's neighbouring objects is proposed. Recently, the digital map processing is based on the single features. No neighbouring object is considered in every operation. Thus, overlays, congestions, coalescence, and other conflicts appear unexpectedly when the generalisation functions are called. To increase the efficiency in the automated map generalisation, the developed conceptual framework classifies the generalisation operations by the neighbouring relationships. A special example for the line-point relationship is discussed. 3. An object-oriented design method that puts emphasis on dynamic relationships is proposed, according to which, the generalisation tool boxes are designed. 4. Following the above, the model for designing a map generalisation system is fully described, and an example is developed which shows that the proposed method is feasible, and demonstrates the efficiency of the object-oriented paradigm.

▼ The popularity of object-oriented programming languages, such as Java and C++, for large application development has stirred an interest in improved technologies for high-performance, reliable, and scalable object storage. Such storage systems are typically referred to as Persistent Object Stores. This thesis describes the design and implementation of Sphere, a new persistent object store developed at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. The requirements for Sphere included high performance, support for transactional multi-threaded loads, scalability, extensibility, portability, reliability, referential integrity via the use of disk garbage collection, provision for flexible schema evolution, and minimised interaction with the mutator. The Sphere architecture is split into two parts: the core and the application-specific customisations. The core was designed to be modular, in order to encourage research and experimentation, and to be as light-weight as possible, in an attempt to achieve high performance through simplicity. The customisation part includes the code that deals with and is optimised for the specific load of the application that Sphere has to support: object formats, free-space management, etc. Even though specialising this part of the store is not trivial, it has the benefit that the interaction between the mutator and Sphere is direct and more efficient, as translation layers are not necessary. Major design decisions for Sphere included (i) splitting the store into partitions, to facilitate incremental disk garbage collection and schema evolution, (ii) using a flexible two-level free-space management, (Hi) introducing a three-dimensional method-dispatch matrix to invoke store operations, which contributes to Sphere's ease-of-extensibility, (iv) adopting a logical addressing scheme, to allow straightforward object and partition relocation, (v) requiring that Sphere can identify reference fields inside objects, so that it does not have to interact with the mutator in order to do so, and (vi) adopting the well-known ARIES recovery algorithm to ensure fault-tolerance. The thesis contains a detailed overview of Sphere and the context in which it was developed. Then, it concentrates on two areas that were explored using Sphere as the implementation platform. First, bulk object-loading issues are discussed and the Ghosted Allocation promotion algorithm is described. This algorithm was designed to allocate large numbers of objects to a store efficiently and with minimal log traffic and was evaluated using large-scale experiments. Over the recent years, the Dutch Continental Shelf has seen the erection of various wind farms in an effort to counter climate change by replacing fossil-based power plants. Since the majority of these sites use scour protections which have a substantial impact on the surroundings, the Dutch government increasingly stimulates and requires ecological enhancement of such structures in order to restore the natural habitat and maintain the marine ecosystem of the North Sea. Oyster enhancement has been one of the methods used for the ecological enhancement of offshore wind farm scour protections. However, studies report that a successful structure for the harbouring of an oyster population is yet to be developed. Existing structures were found to be unstable or unable to provide a suitable habitat for the oysters (Bouma, Belze, et al., 2013; Stokes et al., 2012). The study at hand aims to develop a successful design for oyster broodstock structures for nature enhancement in offshore wind farms. It was conducted for Van Oord as part of project Ecoscour. To establish design criteria for the oyster broodstock structures, oyster habitats and the Borssele V site were analysed and a brainstorm session with partners from project Ecoscour was set up. The final criteria concerned: ecology; structural integrity; commissioning & construction; and monitoring. The design criteria were used to develop several viable structure designs. In order to rapidly assess the strength and stability of potential designs, a Python-based open source tool was built named Econstruct. With this tool, geometries can easily be evaluated under various influences, accounting for the effect of marine fouling. This could be used for quick investigations of loads, stability and structural integrity. The Econstruct tool was validated and analysed for sensitivity for the input parameters, of which the input radius and current velocity had the highest influence on stability. Using the environmental input parameters that hold for the Borssele V wind farm, a terraced design was proposed. After consultation with the manufacturer of the structure, D & M engineers, this proposal was altered to account for manufacturing limitations. The definitive design was evaluated using the Econstruct tool and found to be stable. It was then manufactured, and ultimately placed in Borssele V in October 2020. Several recommendations are made for future research and the design of ecological enhancement structures for offshore wind farms. Most importantly, the Econstruct open source tool can be used in the future for the design of structures for other ecological enhancement projects such as coral reef restorations.

Software systems are permanently changed in order to meet new requirements and to adapt them to permanently changing technology. Design modularity decouples design concerns that probably can be changed and in this way facilitates further system changes. Unfortunately, some design concerns, called crosscutting concerns, cannot be modularized using traditional modularization methods and techniques. Modularization of crosscutting concerns is the research subject of the new emerging software engineering paradigm, aspect-oriented analysis and design. However, this paradigm is still not enough mature. It is still unknown, which design patterns developed in the object-oriented paradigm can be adapted for aspect-oriented paradigm and how to transform them from one paradigm to another in a systematic way. Despite the fact that some attempts have been done to solve this problem, the proposed solutions only eliminate crosscutting concerns in object-oriented design patterns, but do not generate pure aspect-oriented patterns. The thesis defines the class of object-oriented design patterns which can be transformed into pure aspect-oriented ones, proposes a systematic procedure for such transformation and investigates properties of resulting patterns from the viewpoint of their applicability in the design of aspect-oriented domain frameworks. ▼ The design of correct software remains difficult, especially when dealing with concurrency. The primary goal of the research presented here is to devise a pragmatic software development method which  aids the software designer in producing reliable software,  is scalable,  is understandable,  follows a unified approach towards software development (is applicable to different implementation architectures),  promotes reuse,  has seamless transitions between the software development phases,  guarantees general availability and minimises developmental resources. The two main characteristics of the proposed new development method are captured in its name, viz. Single Location Object-Oriented Programming (SLOOP) . It is an object-oriented method, but its computational model is that of a set of statements that execute infinitely often and in any order. A program with such a computational model is called a Single Location Program (SLP). A UNITY program can also be classified as a Single Location Program. In the UNITY theory of programming it was demonstrated how this computational model could simplify correctness reasoning, particularly for concurrent systems. It is this simplification, together with the structuring and reuse features of object-orientation, that is leveraged in the SLOOP method to produce a mechanism whereby ordinary software practitioners can take advantage of the benefits of a more rigorous approach towards software development without requiring an in-depth understanding of the underlying mathematics. The following features of the SLOOP method contribute towards achieving the above goals:  its computational model (it simplifies correctness reasoning, thereby promoting understandability and scalability, and also facilitates designs that are independent of the target implementation architectures),  its object-oriented nature (apart from promoting reuse of frameworks, design patterns and classes, the SLOOP method provides the necessary mechanisms to facilitate reuse of correctness properties, correctness arguments as well as mappings to implementation architectures),  its emphasis on correctness reasoning throughout the software development life cycle (its "constructive approach" aids reliability and seamlessness),  the unique way in which the correctness properties can be specified, reused and reasoned about (this contributes towards understandability and scalability),  the checklist of useful correctness properties that is provided (this promotes reliability),  the incorporation of existing notations into the SLOOP syntax (this guarantees general availability, minimises developmental resources and aids understandability). The main contribution of this thesis is that it presents a unique way of incorporating the SLP computational model into an object-oriented method with the specific aim of simplifying informal correctness reasoning and promoting reuse. ▼ Constraint Handling Object-oriented Rules with Disjunctions (CHORD), é uma extensão orientada a objetos (OO) de CHRv, uma linguagem relacional baseada em regras que foi inicialmente desenhada para a especificação em caixa branca de resolvedores de restrições mas veio a mostrar-se uma linguagem bastante flexível. Flexibilidade esta que vêm sendo demonstrada nos últimos anos pelo grande número de serviços de raciocínio e algoritmos que foram descritos concisamente por meio desta linguagem. Para definir a sintaxe de nossa extensão, nós nos baseamos na abordagem seguida na extensão de Prolog realizada por Frame Logic que é similar à nossa, na qual, a sintaxe de frames foi introduzida para representar construtores OO em cima dos relacionais originais. Além disso, em vez de forçar o usuário (programador) a se adequar à uma semântica pré-definida para esses novos construtores, nós escolhemos uma estratégia inovadora: desacoplar a sintaxe da semântica da linguagem permitindo que o conjunto de hipóteses semânticas seja totalmente configurável. Estes avanços claramente contribuem para o domínio do Raciocínio Automático e da Representação do Conhecimento (AR/KR), dentro do qual CHRv é a linguagem de representa ção do conhecimento mais versátil. Este trabalho também permite a integração dos serviços de raciocínio já providos por CHRv ao estado da arte em linguagens orientadas a objetos reduzindo a quebra de paradigma entre elas. Há também contribuições a outros domínios: em programação declarativa, ao disponibilizar a primeira linguagem a integrar as formas mais poderosas de programação orientada a objetos, baseada em regras e baseada em restrições. No domínio da Web Semântica, nós mostramos que nossa linguagem generaliza a semântica de três dos mais importantes padrões de linguagem de representação do conhecimento, provendo uma solução para o problema recorrente de integração nesta área. No domínio da engenharia guiado por modelos (MDE), este trabalho provê o primeiro mapeamento semântico para modelos UML/OCL, MOF/OCL e transformações de modelo explícitamente configurável e com fundamentação axiomática declarativa e operacional em CFOL. Neste trabalho nós apresentamos as sintaxes abstrata e contreta de CHORD, suas semânticas operacional e declarativa em CFOL, e uma ontologia de hipóteses semânticas para herança. Para validá-lo, nós apresentamos três estudos de caso mostrando que CHORD generaliza UML/OCL, Frame Logic e OWL Advisors/Committee Members: ROBIN, Jacques Pierre Louis (advisor).
