▼ Worldwide higher education institutions have the responsibility to implement Education
for Sustainable Development (ESD) in its multiple ways. The aim of this research is to assess
how ESD was integrated into universities in Portugal through their policies and strategies
within the framework of the goals of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development
2005-2014 (UN DESD 2005-2014). Despite some recent studies, this is an underexplored
research field in Portugal. This research was mainly based on a qualitative approach and a
detailed content analysis method regarding policies, plans and programmes either from
the Government or the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education (MCTES) as
well as universities´ plans and reports through the decade 2005-2014. Semi structured
interviews were conducted to the government bodies and major key actors in the
Portuguese universities, i.e., from Portuguese University Council of Rectors (CRUP), as well
as, with each sustainability relevant role actor at each university. Results showed that ESD
implementation at universities in Portugal is still in its early stages of development and that
there is an insufficiency of national integrated strategies or policies. Public Portuguese
universities have their own strategies or policies on ESD, leading them to progress with
several timely initiatives and practices that resulted from their proactiveness and rhythm
rather than from governmental commission. Except for some actions concerning outreach
and collaboration, research or education, these initiatives seem to have been taken in
isolation from each other and were not holistically integrated, despite some pro-active
sustainability implementation actions and best practices. Nevertheless, universities face
barriers and challenges in implementing SD that need to be expanded, namely in the
promotion of student and staff sustainability awareness, as well as in the development of
transdisciplinary courses for students. This study intends to define a country profile of ESD
implementation in universities and to show how to move forward through the proposal of
the platform Sustainability4U1 where a think tank of initiatives is put forward. Future
investigation will be undertaken as the platform Sustainability4U may be used as a support
to widen transfer of knowledge and sharing of (best) practices not only between
Portuguese universities, but also at European and international levels based on Portugal´s case study. Similar regions or profiles may learn from this experience, gaining from the way
the barriers were overcome.

▼ A Question Answering (QA) system should provide a short and precise answer to a question in natural language, by searching a large knowledge base consisting of natural language text.
The sources of the knowledge base are widely available, for written natural language text is a preferential form of human communication. The information ranges from the more traditional edited texts, for example encyclopaedias or newspaper articles, to text obtained by modern
automatic processes, as automatic speech recognizers.
The work described in the present document focuses on the Portuguese language and open
domain question answering, meaning that neither the questions nor the texts are restricted to a speci c area, and it aims to address both types of written text. Since information retrieval is essential for a QA system, a careful analysis of the current state-of-the-art in information retrieval and question answering components is conducted.
A complete, e cient and robust question answering system is developed in this thesis, consisting of new modules for information retrieval and question answering, that is competitive with current QA systems. The system was evaluated at the Portuguese monolingual task of
[email protected] 2008 and achieved the 3rd place in 6 Portuguese participants and 5th place among the 21 participants of 11 languages.
The system was also tested in Question Answering over Speech Transcripts (QAST), but outside the
o cial evaluation QAST of
[email protected], since Portuguese was not among the available languages for this task. For that reason, an entire test environment consisting of a corpus of transcribed broadcast news and a matching question set was built in the scope of this work, so that experiments could be made. The system proved to be robust in the presence of automatically transcribed data, with results in line with the best reported at QAST.

▼ Mobile learning is presently an emergent area in distance education and elearning that
takes advantage of the ubiquitous and widespread use of mobile devices. Thus, the
understanding of the potential associated with the integration in teaching and learning
processes is crucial and foremost important. This study aims to understand how mobile
learning and the use of mobile devices can improve health education, particularly in the
context of hematology laboratory lessons.
Methodologically, we opted for a case study, implementing surveys and conducting
participant observation. The collected data was analyzed through statistical analysis and
content analysis methods.
The results obtained show that the use of mobile devices enables problem-solving
capacities in hematology. Specifically, the use of apps, such as CellAtlas and Moxtra,
allowed to overcome difficulties regarding the implementation of laboratory techniques.
Our results also evidenced the enhancement of emotional stability in evaluation moments
and the improvement of students’ ratings.
Overall, we consider that the introduction of mobile learning strategies and activities
at the Lisbon School of Health Technology is irreversible, and not limited to the curricular
unit of the Biomedical Laboratory Science course, which was the promoter of this
innovative pedagogical approach.

▼ Nous avons mené une recherche au sujet
de l’intégration sociale des individus d’origine Gitane. D’un point
de vue qui met en valeur la différenciation, notre recherche interroge l’homogénéité essentialiste sur les Gitans.
Les procédés
de l’intégration ne pouvant être dissociés
de l’identité sociale, intégration et identité sociale sont les deux piliers
de notre analyse. Les modes d’intégration des individus sont intimement liés à la socialisation et aux
expériences sociales qui sont à la base
de l’intériorisation
de nouveaux apprentissages.
Dans le cadre
de la compréhension, nous avons menée une recherche qualitative qui a recours à des entretiens avec des individus d’origine sociale Gitane résidant en divers lieux du Portugal. L’analyse porte sur les récits, dans
une optique
de l’individu en tant qu’acteur compétent pour interpréter
de façon réflexive et sa trajectoire et ses sentiments.
Nos résultats donnent à voir une diversité
de trajectoires et
de biographies qui se reflètent sur le processus
de construction identitaire des individus. Les individus circulent en des univers et des espaces sociaux divers et ils interagissent
avec eux tout en construisant une multiplicité
de façons
de s’auto-définir en même temps qu’ils articulent leurs traits d’identité(s) (identités plurielles ou métisses). À son tour, les identités pluriels créent
de nouvelles opportunités
de circulation sociale et produisent des logiques
de l’action qui sont hétérogènes (les
pratiques sociales). Ce processus social d’auto-construction permanent en différents contextes fait émerger les perspectives d’une intégration à la société non-Gitane tout en gardant des ancrages avec l’identité Gitane. Les configurations
de l’intégration individuelle varient selon la différenciation des procédés
de socialisation mais elles ont en commun la capacité d’adhésion flexible à des valeurs qui peuvent « se cumuler ». Ce métissage culturel et
symbolique permet à l’individu
de s’inscrire simultanément en deux cultures.
Être Gitan intégré est une conception dynamique et plurielle qui ouvre la possibilité d’ «être Gitan » et d’« être intégré » c’est-à-dire s’intégrer à la société dominante sans dilution
de l’identification Gitane. Les Gitans (homes et femmes) intégrés que nous avons interviewés affirment leur fierté par leur appartenance Gitane.

▼ This study draws on observation of young groups and aim to contribute to the
understanding of cultural and social significance of the video games pratice and
production.
Through their experience from video games, they look the world, at each other
and themselves. And the variety of gameplay experiences characterizes the social
space of their pratice. The need to understand the complexity of video game
practices involves the consideration of three aspects that mark its instability:
- As a technical device of economic domination and cultural submission, as
cultural icon of globalization.
- As a social experimentation space, as resistance instance to the cultural
normalization and as cultural expression and affirmation of diversity, of the
cultural identity of individuals and local communities.
- As heir of game culture, linked to leisure and recreation.
This PhD thesis covers all these dimensions of game social space, trying to
understand the complexity of its use from the observation and interpretation of the
meaning, the role and the function that the players attribute to the video game
pratice.

▼ This thesis aims to investigate the concept of "Atonement" in poetry and essays by Geoffrey Hill, focusing on some poems taken from Collected Poems and the essay: "Poetry as' Menace 'and Atonement'.
Based on the analysis of the first poem, "Genesis", going through some
problems of historical documents, such as "The Plantagenet Kings" and
poems about the Holocaust, it is concluded with the analysis of the sequence "Lachrimae".
Our readings shows that although the first poem is centered in divine creation and poetic creativity, it sets out what will be the center of interest of Hill, poetry of “flesh and blood”, poetry of suffering that, by its very poignant display is redemptive. This kind of poetry redeems the story, as a witness and as an antidote to the destruction of man; it makes
atonement and reparation for the victims and martyrs; it presents the figure of the crucified Christ as the Redeemer par excellence. In this way, Hill approaches the meditative poets, showing however, a strong
resemblance to the mystics as Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross and, in
modern times, Teresa of Calcuta and Simone Weil.
Through ambiguities and paradoxes in polysemous play of senses and sounds, and in the redemptive struggle with fallen language at the expense of plasticity and etymology of the same, the "Atonement" will be
revealing as aesthetic and ethical Redemption as a luminous cloud
pointing to a theological universe. Our work shows that this is how Hill responds to the veto against poetry after the Holocaust, sentenced by Adorno, or the refusal that art is able to bearing witness to the suffering,
according to Arnold and Yeats.

▼ This dissertation aims to associate Design Thinking with Scrum for the
improvement of software quality. The associated methodologies collaborate to
increase the speed of the backlogs to the user client in the initial phase of a software
development project. The research methodology is the case study through
interviews and a survey with IT professionals, and the practical presentation of a
single case study.
The quali-quantitative data collection was done by submitting a survey to
professionals on LinkedIn and to a group titled "Mulheres
de Produto" by Slack.
The study presents various methods and tools complementary to Design Thinking
and Scrum preventing software problems. It has been revealed that multidisciplinary
teams tend to adapt quickly and creatively because of the combination of Design
Thinking and Scrum always with user participation.
According to the target audience of this research, the value perceived by users is
satisfactory when their needs meet by combining interviews, validating the Minimum
Viable Product (MVP) and completing sprints backlogs.
The direct implications of this study are efficient communication and analytical
capacity of the team, user participation, continuous delivery, and software
development with intrinsic value proposition. The limitation is the fact that the target
audience is exclusively brazilian professionals, and that we present a single case
study.

▼ The present work was developed in order to understand the degree of
implementation of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the
curricula of primary education (PE) in Angola
working with the Cruzeiro do Sul Lubango School Complex in Angola as an
auxiliary tool of the process. This theme is very relevant to the Angolan education
system, since it can contribute to increase the quality of education, raising
teachers' awareness of ESD and thus improving the existing program’s content
and the country's Sustainable Development (SD). The purpose of this research
was to analyze the Syllabus of Primary Education (SPE) in the Cruzeiro do Sul
School Complex in order to understand the degree of EDS implementation and to
evaluate the level of knowledge of the EDS educational community. Based on this
information, together with UNESCO international guide for the treatment of ESD,
and other relevant documents, it was prepared a set of guidelines and suggestions
for the implementation of ESD in the curricula of PE according to the Angolan
reality. These objectives were achieved through documentary analysis,
bibliographic review, and structured interviews with the educational community.
These guidelines can serve as support to the teachers of the Cruzeiro do Sul
School Complex and to other education stakeholders.

▼ People are the most important resource in Organizations that inevitably have to be
able to respond to the market demands, which implies the development of specific
training plans, adapted to identified needs, as well as the use of innovative tools
that present the flexibility required for the requests within the framework of the
business world [1].
According to the study carried out in 2014, "360º Panorama E-Learning
Governance & E-Learning Practices in Portugal", developed between TecMinho -
Interface of the University of Minho, and Quaternaire Portugal, the number of
Organizations that provide training to its employees through the e-learning training
modality is growing, however, resistance to the use of this scheme continues to be
a factor that limits the development of a greater number of e-learning programs in
Portugal. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify measures to combat the disadvantages
of e-learning, determinants for the adoption of e-learning in Organizations.
The identification of these measures, considered as the most relevant in this study,
aims to help all those interested in the area of vocational training in the
implementation of training programs through the e-learning modality, in order to
allow Organizations to leverage their advantages and work in a to minimize its
disadvantages.

▼ The study on the importance of the grandparents in the contemporary family and society aims at understanding the role they play on the family dynamics, either as a resource or the transfer of know-how in an intergeneration perspective.
The study included 50 families, 25 families living in a rural context and another 25 living in a urbane one. People from very different generations were interviewed, i.e, fathers, mothers, grandmothers and granfathers, and from the very same familiy nucleus, in a total os 200 individuals.
The conclusion drawn is that grandparents are indeed an indispensable family, social and economical resource, and are also very important on the transfer of social and cultural values, as well as looking after their grandchildren.
The grandparents’ transfer of know-how, particularly the knowledge transfered from grandmothers as far as infant caretaking is concerned, are an added value for mothers who are initiating their maternal Project.
Today, the health resources avaiable are better; howevwer in terms of local health care resources, these do not always meet the fathers and mothers needs.
The use of the traditional health care procedures has decreased, although some are still being used by grandmothers.
There is na intergeneration decrease regarding the importance and transfer of parents’ religious practices and values on infant protection, althought not opposing to their children attending a church nor practicing a religion.
The research underlines the need to keep the importance of the family nucleus on its elements quality of life, well-being and harmonious growth, as well as the family solidarity existing among grandparents, parents and grandchildren.

▼ The dissertation presented here is based on the equations of Celestial Mechanics.
This work focuses on the orbits of the planets of the Solar System. In a first
approximation, the orbits are ellipses, described by Kepler in their three movement
laws. In his second law, Newton described how the change in the state of movement of
a body is related to the forces applied on it. The law of universal gravitation indicates
that the gravitational force between bodies is proportional to the product of the masses
and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. The relationship
between this two laws can be applied to a n-body system, such as our Solar System. The
orbits of the planets can be described by the equations of motion, that can be written in
function of the temporal derivatives of the position and linear momentum vectors. This
derivatives are related with the system’s Hamiltonian derivatives. The Hamiltonian
represents the total energy of the Solar System, because this is a conservative system,
this is, the energy remains constant over time.
The numerical application to the Solar System problem uses the differential equation
that relates the Hamiltonian with the position and linear momentum. To solve
numericaly this differential equation were used three methods: the explicit Euler
method, the symplectic Euler method and the Störmer-Verlet method. The explicit Euler
method was used as a reference, since it is not appropriate to conservative systems. The
remaining methods are appropriate to conservative systems and exhibit results close to
those of the theoretical ellipse and the data calculated by JPL/NASA. However, these
methods introduce some difficulties, namely, the error calculation begins to deviate
from the convergence order as the data deviate from the initial cinditions, because the
baricenter of the Solar System of these methods is not at the origin of the referential.

▼ The act of decision-making in the management field can be complex. All the several
industries have their own actors and very specific fields of intervention. For that reason,
visual information can be a powerful ally when correctly adapted to its focused point.
Dashboards in particular, gather all the amount of data that’s been generated every day and
translate that into visual information that helps the user to monitor the project in a more
dynamic and with much more control of the processes it is supposed to make decisions on.
Within the construction industry exist many sub-industries that contribute for the thousands
of components that comprises a structure, a building, a final product. The wood construction
is very common in Scandinavian countries and specially in residential buildings, in which it
is necessary to install waterproofing systems for the so called “wet rooms”, in constant
contact with moist or water.
This study aims to develop a visual model that make possible the analysis, creation and the
evaluation of dashboards that will support the decision-making process of the project
manager, focusing on the management side of the product rather than the production. This
is comprised by several stages of development which results in a high-definition prototype.
The user played an important role in this work throughout surveys and direct observation of
testing, so it could evaluate the potential of the system to be used frequently. For the focus
group, 6 participants were part of the testing sessions for the first version of the prototype.
The score average was 74,6 in the System Usability Scale, with the prototype being
considered as Good.

de Coimbra was a scientific and literary academy funded in 1852 and having the last registered meeting minute in 1985.
It was a multidisciplinary academy created to actively seek the development of Knowledge in the various fields of Science and Literature, aligned with the spirit of that time.
The following essay proposes to address the issue of the Archeology in the Instituto
de Coimbra through the postal correspondence received by that institution.
From that perspective we will begin by presenting a small historical and organic review of the Instituto
de Coimbra and its section of archeology.
We will then talk about the Portuguese and Spanish joint congresses for the progress of Science and the role of the Instituto
de Coimbra in the organization of those meetings.
It will also be presented a small biography of each one of the archeologists that sent postal mail to the Instituto
de Coimbra, followed lastly by the analysis of the letters and postal cards in question.

▼ The primary purpose of this project is to extend Prover9 with a scripting language.
This was achieved by adding a Python interpreter, an interactive command line and a special
scripting library to interact with Prover9 and Mace4 files. A user interface in the form of a web
application was also created to help users achieve a more rapid and efficient way of working with
automated theorem proving.
The new scripting library offers utilities that allows a user to run several Prover9 sessions
concurrently and to create strategies for increasing the effectiveness of the proof search or to search
for shorter proofs. Another module allows to interact with the algebra system GAP.
Based on the library, many more functionalities can be easily added, as the main goal is to give users
the ability to extend the functionality of Prover9 the way they see fit.
In conclusion, the aim of this project is to offer to the mathematical community an integrated
environment for working with automated reasoning

▼ This work focuses on the use of the makerspace in school libraries. Its main objective is to identify, through bibliometric analysis, the approach given in relation to the makerspace in school libraries. It is presented, first, a review of the literature on school libraries and the makerspaces, and then a bibliometric analysis. Using Publish or Perish software, 979 articles in English and 108 articles in Portuguese and Spanish were analyzed. It was analyzed information about the main journals, articles, authors, dates, H index, G index and other metrics. An altmetric analysis was done with the 50 most cited articles focusing on social and demographic data. In relation to the main journals, it was observed that 25% of the journals published 48% of the articles, while the other 75% of journals were responsible for 52% of the articles, validating, in this case, the Bradford Law. As for the main authors, the results are consistent with Lotka's Law but could not be confirmed with accuracy. Regarding the main articles, there was a certain preference among readers for documents that have a broader approach, contemplating panoramic analyzes on the theme of the makerspace, with both practical and theoretical views. The theoretical view stands out among the most cited articles. The temporal analysis indicated a growth in the number of documents published since the first article found in the literature, this growth was exponential between 2011 and 2014, when it became linear until the date delimited for the research (2018). In the altmetric analysis it was verified that there is no direct relation between the articles most cited in the scientific literature and the most cited articles in social networks and other web 2.0 tools. It was also verified that in the Portuguese and Spanish languages both in the bibliometric and in the altmetric analysis the number of articles, authors, citations and mentions is much lower than in English, the latter being the most active language on the
subject in scientific circles and in social media. . It is concluded that the makerspace is a potential space for school libraries a place to stimulate creativity and serve as a helper of the teaching-learning process, giving extra-class support to the content transmitted by teachers in the classroom. It was also noted the ability of these spaces to develop specific skills in students and bring the external community, including parents, into the school activities, further stimulating the development not only cognitive but also the social development of students.

O Primo Basílio and Os Maias, relating them also with other fictional
works of the author.
Characters, such as Luísa, Juliana, D. Felicidade, Maria Monforte, Maria Eduarda,
Raquel Cohen, Condessa
de Gouvarinho, Amélia, the sisters Gansosos, D. Maria da
Assunçã
o and D. Josefa Dias, are seen according to the physical and psychological
perspective, the clothes used, the moral profile and social status shown. Therefore, it is
possible to find common characteristics that lead to the identification of stereotypes in
these characters.
Despite the extensive gallery of female characters in the fictional work of the
author, the stereotypes to which they belong are restricted because they are included in
groups, based on specific profiles such as the adulterous, the spinster, the pious and the
foreigner.
Although the stereotypes are part of the fictional work of Eça
de Queirós, it is also
possible to identify some cases of subversion of the stereotypes through opposition or
heterogeneity. Comparing to the other female characters, Leopoldina and Maria Eduarda
are examples of subversion as the first is the opposite of the other women and the second
congregates multiple profiles.

▼ Climacteric is a special stage in the natural cycle of life that integrates the women's menopause. This transitional phase is associated to changes that could influence women’s health and quality of life and should be considered the needs for adaptation at a bio-psy-socio-cultural and spiritual level in this stage of life with characteristics similar to other steps in women’s cycle of life. The repercussions on a couple’s relationship, implies that both have to make adaptations, at all levels, in an effort to maintain or improve the quality of life they enjoyed.
We developed a descriptive study with a mixed approach in two phases, on the first one we intended to identify the social representations through the response to stimuli: menopause, climacteric, conjugal relationship and sexuality. On the second phase, we intended to understand the implications of climacteric on conjugal relationships, using a self-filling questionnaire resorting to EASAVIS, ISS and WOQOOL (Bref) scale in 116 couples.
We headlight some ignorance concerning the climacteric stage and a connotation of menopause with disfunction and healthcare problems. In individual with lower ages and higher level of education correspond to a better quality of life and a bigger conjugal and sexual satisfaction. Men present a better quality of life and a more positive vision about marriage. Marital functioning recommends settings adjustments over time in conjugal relationship. The way each couple commits and lives is own relationship, influences and are influenced by the different climacteric stages. They also consider that don’t have enough preparation to healthily experience this stage of cycle of life.
Investing in professional formation for a individual and culturally appropriated intervention in the transition of menopause and improve the response of health services seems an important challenge in improving the quality of life, well-being and equilibrium of women and couples.

▼ This work assess how the distribution structures are affected by strategic factors and how these have an influence on the performance of insurance companies. The focus lies in checking the influence of distribution structures in performance of insurance companies. Facing into consideration that these same companies distribute products such as life and non-life, considering that products are designed depending on customers' motivations and that insurance companies are
subject to internal and external impact factors, their effect was assumed in the strategic factors. The result from the strategic factors is the choice of their structure of channel, to achieve the performance, measured in return on sales, return on equity, sales growth and productivity.
The sample was made up of 252 insurers operating in the Portuguese and Spanish markets, from the period of 2005 to 2007. The questionnaire was sent to 431 companies, corresponding to the whole universe of the two above mentioned markets.
The work has based on the theory of distribution channels and the theory of resources.
Were used the statistical techniques, the Cronbach alpha, Student’s t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Kolmogorov–Smirnov test with Lilliefors correction and the structural equation modelling. The tools SPSS software and AMOS were used.
It was essencially concluded, that the strategic factors in insurance companies influence the distribution structures, there is influence of distribution structures in the profitability, productivity and growth of insurance companies and the customers' motivations and impact factors (internal and external) affect the strategic factors identifie by the channels used, financial resources, human resources, risk of
underwriting insurance products and product and services innovation.
It was not proven that the types of products affect the strategic factors which were
identified.

Pretende-se investigar o processo de aprendizagem através de algumas aplicações multimédia, nomeadamente, um jogo aplicado em sala de aula, o jogo Sing-Star, e uma App designada Instrumentos Musicais, artefacto digital criado pelo investigador para utilizar com alunos do Ensino Básico em Educação Musical.
Esta investigação pretende averiguar se estes instrumentos multimédia são um bom veículo de transmissão de conhecimentos e se facilitam as aprendizagens funcionando como complemento, comparativamente a uma aula denominada de «tradicional».
O estudo recai sobre a observação dos alunos em aula e da análise de dados resultantes de testes, dados e de um questionário aplicado em sala de aula.
Prevê-se a divulgação ao meio educacional dos resultados da investigação se se verificar que, numa escala mais alargada, os resultados proporcionam uma aprendizagem eficaz na mesma medida que uma aula tradicional o faria.

▼ The current research presents an analysis of the historical evolution and of the situation of human rights in Mozambique, emphasizing the treatment of human rights by the Police (PRM). The selected issue is relevant because there are not, up to date, scientific works which analyse the agency of Mozambican Police regarding the violations which it puts into practice against the human rights of Mozambican citizens. In methodological terms, the research adopted an approach purely qualitative, seeking to understand the reasons of the frequent use of violence by the Police, its relationships with political and legal power, ending for presenting a typology of the cases of its violations of human rights, having, as a main theoretical inspiration, the dichotomy of Galtung “structure”-“actor”. This research had, as its most meaningful result, the consideration of the violation of human rights by Mozambican police as a structural element of the local history and politics, starting from the analysis of the evolution of the constitutional and legislative changes in Mozambique under the light of human rights, the critical analysis of the pivotal phases of the life of PRM and its current organization, the training that the police agents have in relation to the specific issue of human rights. The research shows that the police agents know human rights, and that they generally act in opposition to these principles, due to higher orders or, in general, to “systematic” or “structural” reasons, which activate mechanisms of diffuse impunity, codes of silence and of complicity, which involves the citizens, the same colleagues and the hierarchical superiors of the violators agents and, lastly, the judges. So, the research shows that, with rare exceptions, the outcome of the prosecution is absent; on the contrary, the outcome of the prosecution can be sometimes different only in cases of a purely individual action by the violator police agent, with exemplary sentences.

▼ One fifth of world population (1.4 billion) lacks access to electricity and one third still rely on biomass for cooking (woodfuel, charcoal, agricultural remains and dung). Those are the victims of energy poverty who are located, almost all, in poor countries in Africa and Asia.
This work discusses that issue in the context of an African capital-city (city of Nouakchott, Mauritania) in the western part of the Sahel region. A discussion was carried-out of the situation of the target population under a qualitative prism that goes opposite to mainstream for which the problem of poverty is reduced to indicators and indexes. The issue of traditional energies - the energy of the poorest - often neglected by the decision makers, is discussed and arguments usually used for that attitude being demystified. There are no renewable and financially accessible substitutes for these forms of energy to the poor, so ignoring the problem is not a solution. The well-known negative effects of burning biomass - for health, environment (GHG) and others - are not intrinsic to these sources of energy but they lay in the way these fuels are produced and used (poor carbonization and use of old-fashioned inefficient stoves). There is ample echo in the debate for this issue. The situation of domestic energy in Mauritania and the city of Nouakchott is discussed, from the social, cultural and economic angles, as well as the public policies of the last decades that aimed at an energy transition from charcoal (energy of the poor of the city) to LPG (cooking energy of less poor) and the lessons (not) learned questioned. The thesis advocates a rehabilitation of traditional energies out from their "quasi-illegal" situation and their inclusion in the strategies, policies and programs directed to domestic energy and within the framework of a local and global sustainability paradigm. In particular, and in our (urban) case, special attention is given to charcoal (cooking energy of the fifth of Nouakchott's households. Charcoal is suggested, under certain conditions of production and end-use – as the most suitable fuel to ensure the desired energy transition to more modern, clean and environmentally friendly source of energy. In this context, the work devotes part of the conclusions to practical proposals that could help to achieve this objective.

▼ High unemployment rates are a serious problem in the social and economic context of the western Algarve. In this context, entrepreneurship, especially the creation of its own job, becomes more prominent, becoming a privileged solution. To facilitate this process it becomes evident the need to create support equipment for entrepreneurs who want to create jobs, assisting in the most problematic phase of the first years of the company's life.
Social incubators aim to support job creation by providing a portfolio of services tailored to the needs of entrepreneurs and the sustainable development of projects.
This study focuses on two of these support structures for entrepreneurship and self-employment that, despite the motivation and common objectives, have different forms of action and management: Startup Portimã
o and Cowork Lagos, both located in the western Algarve. This study aims to identify the similarities and differences between the two social incubators and to understand their importance in increasing the survival of incubated companies.

▼ In 1987, the Brundtland Report pointed to the need to promote the
sustainable growth, checking that the population and industrial growth brought
immeasurable environmental challenges. The generation of excess waste and the
level of waste in Brazil is a reflection of a high consumption policy and depletes
non-renewable resources, causing environmental imbalances and problems
associated with inappropriate disposal of urban waste. For this reason, the search for
adequate solutions for the treatment and the final disposal of the waste is the target
of the sectoral policies in Brazil and in the world. In Teresópolis, the Prata’s Landfill
is the final disposal site for municipal solid waste. Due to the precarious conditions
and poor operation, the Prata’s Landfill turns out to be a dump and, consequently,
does not correspond to the National Solid Waste Policy, generating socialenvironmental impacts. The identification of the socio-environmental costs of the
management of Teresópolis landfill and possible solutions to solve or improve the
current sanitary situation has identified throughout the dissertation, through an
exploratory investigation, combining data collected by surveys, forms,
bibliographical / documentary research and field visit.

▼ The current paradigm of a business process model is that it is a representation
of a sequence of tasks that act upon some data input, to produce an output,
aiming the production of a new service or product to be delivered from a producer to a customer. Although this is a valid way of thinking, it neglects to
consider in enough detail the influence of some phenomenon on inputs, e.g.
human behaviour, communication, social interactions, the organisational culture which can have a significant effect on the output delivered by a business
process. As the dynamics of these phenomena are non-linear, they can be
interpreted as a complex system. This holistic way of thinking about business
processes opens the doors to the possibility of combining different simulation
methods to model different aspects that influence a process. A BPMN engine
and an agent-based simulation (ABS) engine are chosen to serve the basis of
our framework. In its conception, we not only consider the technical aspects of
the framework but also delve into exploring its management and organizational
dimensions, with the intent of facilitating its adoption in enterprises, as a tool
to support decision support systems. We analyse how accurate the simulation
results can be when using these two tools as well as what considerations need
to be considered within organizations.

▼ Mensagem is one of the most exciting literary productions of Fernando Pessoa and Western literature, undoubtedly. The question about the national identity and Pessoa's initiative to propose the restoration of Portuguese traditions, from the founding hero myth of Ulysses, convinced us about to elect Mensagem as our object of study for the preparation of this thesis. Besides being a book that reconstructs mythic, symbolic and poetic way the history of Portugal, Mensagem is an emblematic text that allows us to reflect on the Pessoa's conception of the Portuguese society, since the formation of the Portuguese people to the modernist era Pessoa. For the present study, we selected the poem Ulysses, a part of Pessoa's Mensagem to the Portuguese people. The thesis is divided into five parts, the first of which seeks to conceptualize myth, from the ideas of writers Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, Claude Lévi-Strauss and other mythologists. In the second chapter of the first part of the thesis confront the various literary versions of the myth of Ulysses, the civilizing hero who had founded the city of Lisbon. We intend to present Homer's version of Gabriel Pereira
de Castro and the above poem Ulysses of Fernando Pessoa, among others. The debate concerning the ideal platonic republican occupies the third chapter in the first half of the thesis. Next, update the discussions about national identity – in Plato and Fernando Pessoa – from the concept of "Republic", common to both. The third part of the thesis presents an anthropological reading of spiral in Pessoa’s text, using the structures and imaginary fields, mainly investigated by the researcher Gilbert Durand. We ended our thesis, with the presentation of the main conclusions drawn from our research process on the Pessoa text.

▼ The present study focuses on space in the literary works of the Portuguese José Saramago. It being considered an intentionally privileged category by the writer in several of his novels, not only in the physical meaning, but in a multitude of senses emerging from the different topoi shown, an ascending line is recognized, reflecting the evolving form of the spaces presented, either real or alluded, in the interaction of the characters, implying in these a strong inner growth.
Both the human and symbolic dimensions of space is to be explored. To each of these dimensions is respectively associated memory and violence, both considered important lines of strength in Saramago´s work. Memory is revealed as a determinant space in the formation of both individual and collective conscience: the individual memory seeks to recover from the past the essence of what the human being will become; the collective memory rises through the necessity of capturing moments of the historical past that were intentionally eliminated from canonic speech. In turn, violence appears associated to less physical than symbolic spaces, and presents itself as a societal metaphor – a place where the human being is frequently disrespected in its condition or is lead into a state of apathy preventing him from asserting and fulfilling himself as a person.
From five analyzed novels, an attempt is made to support the thesis, in which space, in Saramago, evolves from negativity into a near utopic dimension; negativity being reflected in the way the author introduces the initial spaces, in which the movement of the characters appears conditioned by a negative load. However, from that place, forces ensue that bring realization of the chaos in which the characters find themselves, driving them to seek another space, a utopic one, where it is possible for them to (re)live.

▼ The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the possible influence of a European cur-rent of thought in Dinisian’s literary career. It is considered that this career begins in 1861, when Joaquim Guilherme Gomes Coelho – using, for the first time, the pseudonym of Júlio Dinis – publishes three poems in a «periodical paper of unpublished poems», A Grinalda, and concludes in the first days of September 1871 with the revision of the manuscript of his last Crónica da Aldeia, Os Fidalgos da Casa Mourisca.
The European current of thought mentioned above formed itself as a philosophical para-digm of the modernity, of Hegelian influence, and is usually called Kunstreligion (Art Re-ligion), because of having known its theoretical core in Germany, although after 1850 it has expanded to other European countries, where its reception occurred at first individually by some artists – among them our Júlio Dinis, but also Antero de Quental – who began to exalt art as religion, from which the artist presents himself as a priest, in the way that he assumes ministerial functions. Therefore, the artist has a mission to perform in order to educate and civilize the European people, at a time when Western European societies are undergoing an accelerated process of secularization. In this way, in the second part of the nineteenth century the concept of Kunstreligion radicalise itself and begins to express a relationship of concurrence, in the public place, between art and official religion – in the particular case of Portugal, between art and Catholicism. This concurrence expresses itself, above all, in artists’ attitudes who critically intervene in society with their artistic practice intending to help to (re)build it. In doing so, artistes convey the values which are inherent in the ideology they defend – and Kunstreligion spreads as an aesthetic-philosophical cur-rent.

▼ The research has as main objective to understand if the current concepts and paradigms on interculturality and public space are echoed in the national press and contribute to the formation and structuring of society. The refugee crisis reinforced our identity values and showed the relativity of humanistic concepts. The increase in the influx of Muslim immigrants in Europe, accustomed to exercising their beliefs in another cultural environment, has brought conflict with our environment. The scope of this study lies in the reflection on what could be the basis of a common culture, the precepts of interculturality, that allow us to adopt healthy intercultural relations as ways of being in the world.
We approach the question from the point of view of stereotypes, language, education and the way in which, in general, we come to the knowledge of the other and its culture. All of these are fundamental tools for the development of an intercultural attitude that promotes understanding between peoples. Public space and what it represents in a multiethnic, multireligious and multicultural society reflects our identity and way of life and determines both the present and the future. New public spaces as well as the public space from different points of view are considered, not just that of the media.
In accordance with the theoretical study, we make an appeal to the Portuguese press, between 2013 and 2015 on the refugee crisis, seeking to deconstruct it in order to detect whether the reality of the news and its impact on society and the public space will they approach or move away.
According to our study, it can be concluded that social communication influences society through the validation or contestation of its cultural values, and that society influences interculturality in the intergenerational transmission of these same values, forming a synergy that can be negative or positive but always accountable for.
