▼ In this project, we’re exploring the potential of leveraging existing calendar application to create a web-based digital nudging service that helps its users increase productivity level. At a higher level, we are making use of our users’ free time on the calendar and nudging them to plan calendar events on tasks they’re committed to complete such as working on ”homework assignments” or ”side projects”. Therefore, upon our study participants granting us access to their calendar usage history, we implemented and experimented on a number of different methods that attempt to analyze users’ interests and deliver personalized nudges in terms of the timing to
nudge each individual and the event suggestions that would interest them. To evaluate this approach, we recruited participants with whom, after using our services, the goal is to not only incentivize them to schedule more productivity-related events on their calendars but also nourish the awareness of the productivity values calendar provides and organically increase their calendar usages.

▼ Recent work in behavioral economics has led to startling conclusions about the limits of human rationality. Contrary to the rational maximizer of utility assumed by traditional economics, actual decision makers make choices that are inconsistent with their own ends and are powerfully influenced by the context in which decisions are presented. Recently, some writers have argued that we ought to use the power of decision making context to offset the inconsistent choice phenomenon. Positions of this kind go alternatively under the banners of “Libertarian Paternalism,” “Choice Architecture,” and “Nudging.” The central idea is that people who shape the context of choices (Choice Architects) should opt to frame choices so all choices remain available (Libertarianism), but should ensure that the choosers are more likely (Nudged) to make choices that make them better off (Paternalism).
Despite an explosion in discussion of and use of nudges, philosophers and ethicists have in large part been missing from the conversation. The discussion that has taken place among philosophers has mostly been about whether there is something objectionable about nudges in general. However, as I will argue later in the dissertation, this discussion is of limited use because nudges vary widely in their ethical features.
This dissertation advances in five chapters. In chapter 1, I discuss what precisely a
nudge is and what it is not. In chapter two I outline a three-factor model for analyzing whether a
nudge is morally acceptable. In chapter three I discuss the question of when a
nudge makes a chooser better off. I finally defend a new version of the informed desire account which avoids difficulties with the standard informed desire account in the literature. In chapter four I discuss the question of when a
nudge is the best available choice, comparing it to rational persuasion, libertarianism and paternalism as possible alternatives. Finally in chapter 5 I discuss two real world applications of the nudging and how the ideas developed elsewhere in the dissertation are used to evaluate these nudges.

▼ Nudges are psychologically informed tools designed to promote behaviour change that improve health and wellbeing. As nudges gain global appeal through government administrations, their implementation as a tool within social policy are subject to stricter scrutiny. The need for inspection of the current underpinning theoretical framework of nudges is particularly critical given the diversity of nudge-type interventions and the mixed evidence for their effectiveness. The thesis first conceptualised nudge into Type 1 and Type 2 differed according to the amount of re-evaluation and re-structuring of knowledge representations needed to bring in alignment the evidence base and choice behaviour. Based on this conceptualisation, evidence base in the health domain were critically examined to determine which type of nudges is effective. The literature review showed that Type 2 nudges are more effective at sustaining behaviour change than Type 1 nudges. The thesis then explored the extent to which nudge undermines autonomy. From a welfarist perspective, nudges such as default rules bypass people's reflective thinking and make general presumption about people's choices which may not align with their underlying wishes. Indeed, two online questionnaires revealed that third-party judgements of choices made under pro-self default in pension enrolment and pro-social default in organ donation were less likely to represent the individual's "true" preference compared to when an active choice is made. The welfare consequence of implementing defaults were discussed in these respective contexts. From a transparency perspective, influencing people's behaviour without their awareness can be regarded as manipulation and hence a violation of autonomy. The online survey findings revealed that the public generally find interventions easier to identify, perceive them as more effective and acceptable, and more likely to align with people's values or interest when they are transparent, and have a positive rationale for how they work. In closing, the proposed theoretical framework corroborated the empirical findings which suggest that Type 1 nudges are more likely to bypass people's reflective thinking and infringe upon personal autonomy. Conversely, Type 2 nudges that work in a transparent manner are more likely to promote behavioural change in line with the chooser's higher-order desire. For policy makers, the important practical point is that Type 2 nudges are more likely to preserve autonomy in a way that will trigger sustainable behavioural change at a population level compared to Type 1 nudges.

▼ What distinguishes manipulative interpersonal influence from non-manipulative influence? When is it wrong to manipulate a person and what makes it wrong? I articulate a novel account according to which interpersonal manipulation is a process of influence that deliberately fails to track reasons. To manipulate a reasons-responsive person is to render her detached from an important aspect of reality, namely, her reasons or the considerations that ought to govern her behavior. This is what makes manipulation pro tanto morally impermissible (when it is). My account of manipulation provides a helpful framework for thinking through some of the philosophically neglected ethical issues arising out the application of social scientific research on human decision making in the domains of health care and public policy.

▼ Tutkimuksessa tutkitaan käyttäytymistaloustieteestä kehittynyttä julkista interventiota eli väliintuloa nimeltä tuuppaus (nudge). Tuuppaus saavutti suuren yleisön tietoisuuden vuonna 2008, kun Richard Thaler ja Cass Sunstein julkaisivat aiheesta saman nimisen kirjan. Kirjan oppeja ruvettiin nopeasti soveltamaan mm.
Tuuppaus perustuu mielen oikopolkuihin eli heuristiikkoihin vaikuttamiseen, joiden löytäminen on helpottanut ihmisten päätöksenteon ennustamista. Tuuppaus on yksi keskeisin käyttäytymistieteen soveltamisen muodoista. Suomessa käyttäytymistiedettä hyödyntäviä kokeiluja ollaan toteutettu hyvin vähän osittain yhdenvertaisuusperiaatteen tulkinnan myötä, joka nostaa kynnystä osallistaa kansalaisia kokeellisille asetelmille. Suomessa myös vahva regulaatio korvaa tarpeen tuupata. Kiinnostus käyttäytymistieteen hyödyntämistä kohtaan on kuitenkin kasvamassa.

Picture yourself wanting to eat healthier, but you have experienced adversity to start. All of a sudden while standing in the restaurant, that healthy option that seemed so far away, now seems like the proper decision to make. A reason for the sudden change may be due to a nudge that the restaurant has reinforced in order to influence you subconsciously. The concept of nudging aims to shape the environment to indirectly influence the behavior of an individual to make a certain decision that benefits both the individual and society. Today, nudging is mostly used in politics, however the use of nudging is expanding and is now being applied in other societal functions as well. The current research on how nudging is used in corporations is relatively limited and mainly focuses on health and lifestyle. Therefore, the aim of this study is to get an insight how retail companies use nudging in stores and on e-commerce platforms. In order to examine how swedish retail companies use nudging as a positive reinforcement technique, this study used a quality method where six interviews were conducted with several retail companies. The study concludes that the retail companies’ methods conform nudging, however all criterias included in the concept of nudging were not fulfilled. The study also demonstrates that companies way of working with nudging not always benefits the individual and society, and many of the activities does in the end benefit the companies.

To get individuals to make specific decisions, nudge can be categorized into low and high degree of intrusiveness based on the degree of intrusiveness on the individual's autonomy. Nudge with high degree of intrusiveness has been criticized for endangering the individual’s freedom of choice. Moreover, private actors have been criticized for utilize nudging in a way that is not necessarily beneficial for the consumer. This study examines whether nudge with high (cf. low) degree of intrusiveness affect consumer attitudes and their adoption of nudge when the actor is private (cf. public). Since critics believe that nudging can be perceived as marketing, the study explores whether consumers also perceive nudging as marketing. An experimental design (2x2) was applied in this study and high (cf. low) degree of intrusiveness and private (cf. public) actors was manipulated in order to investigate the effect on consumer attitudes and their adoption of nudge. The results indicate that consumers adopt to nudge with low (cf. high) degree of intrusiveness in a greater extent, which can be explained by their negative attitude towards nudge with high (cf. low) degree of intrusiveness. Therefore, private actors should be careful when implementing nudge with high degree of intrusiveness. Furthermore,…

In this thesis, we propose to mode! individuals' reaction to a nudge, based on the announcement of the socially optimal contribution. We want to compare the efficiency of this incentive, with the efficiency of a tax to improve environmental quality. We test the theoretical predictions we obtained in a laboratory experiment. We show that the reaction to our nudge depends on subjects' environmental sensitivity, contrary to the tax. ln a second experiment, we test the existence of persistent effects of these two instruments in the long term. We also consider a mix tool (tax and nudge), to raise subjects' awareness (with the nudge) that they are taxed because their behaviour is not optimal. ln the last chapter, we extend our analysis considering agents arranged in fixed networks. We analyze how the equilibria are shaped under the implementation of our nudge.

▼ Today, organizations are facing rising costs caused by increased employee sick - leave. A way to motivate employees to choose a healthier lifestyle is for the employer to offer wellness incentives. However, not too many employees are taking advantage of the incentives. According to the Transtheoretical Model of Health Behavior Change (TTM) , people are at different stages in their behavior change process. By knowing their personal obstacles to change, organizations can use nudge management and wellness incentives to help their employees to choose a healthier lifestyle. In order to get some answers, we conducted qualitative interviews at the Swedish Migration Agency. The result of our research showed seven main obstacles, and in this thesis we have explored dif erent nudges organizations can use to promote health and to lower sick - leave.

▼ Phishing is a reoccurring issue, which uses social engineering as an attack strategy. The prevention of these attacks is often content-based filters. These solutions are however not always perfect, and phishing emails can still be able to get through the filters. We suggest a new strategy to combat phishing. The strategy is a technical platform which uses the psychology concept nudge. Nudge is a concept that can be used to change a certain behaviour, in this case to make people more cautious when reading their emails. The objective of this thesis is to suggest a nudge using a technical platform regarding possible desensitization. The nudge aims to change email related behaviours to more healthy ones. To get indications if the nudge has benefits, a qualitative survey was made. When using a psychology-based solution, one must address the possibility of desensitization. To minimize possible desensitization, a quantitative analysis was made where different ways to minimize desensitization were assessed. Data for this analysis was gathered by a simulation modeling, where the simulation aimed to replicate a user performing email related events. The conclusion of the simulation results showed that a whitelist approach was the most appropriate for our nudge. The approach minimized the chance of possible desensitization while having a low risk of not performing a nudge when needed. The conclusion of the survey results was that there was an indication of behavioural change and that there existed a risk of possible desensitization.

▼ The greatest leverage of reducing anthropogenic climate impact lies within curbing the increasing trend of global meat consumption. As such, there is a need for new types of tools within policy and business, as targeting food consumption with standard policy measures has proven difficult. This study examines the role of altering choice architectures in grocery stores in Sweden by implementing three types of so-called nudges with the purpose of making consumers reduce their minced beef consumption by supplementing it with carrots and beans. The effects of the nudges were tested through a natural field experiment involving 26 ICA stores in Stockholm-Mälardalen region. The results show a significant increase of consumption of carrots and beans. To determine if the nudge-intervention has an effect (a reduction) also on the minced beef, more research is needed. The study provides insights of what could work when it comes to applying nudges in food stores and concludes that nudging has the potential of being a valuable tool for policy makers and business leaders to steer consumers towards more sustainable consumption. Moreover, the study contributes to the understudied field of green nudging and natural field experiments in food stores.

▼ The two major smartphone platforms (Android and iOS) have more than two mil- lion mobile applications (apps) available from their respective app stores, and each store has seen more than 50 billion apps downloaded. Although apps provide desired functionality by accessing users’ personal information, they also access personal information for other purposes (e.g., advertising or profiling) that users may or may not desire. Users can exercise control over how apps access their personal information through permission managers. However, a permission manager alone might not be sufficient to help users manage their app privacy because: (1) privacy is typically a secondary task and thus users might not be motivated enough to take advantage of the permission manager’s functionality, and (2) even when using the permission manager, users often make suboptimal privacy decisions due to hurdles in decision making such as incomplete information, bounded rationality, and cognitive and behavioral biases. To address these two challenges, the theoretical framework of this dissertation is the concept of nudges: “soft paternalistic” behavioral interventions that do not restrict choice but account for decision making hurdles. Specifically, I designed app privacy nudges that primarily address the incomplete information hurdle. The nudges aim to help users make better privacy decisions by (1) increasing users’ awareness of privacy risks associated with apps, and (2) temporarily making privacy the primary task to motivate users to review and adjust their app settings. I evaluated app privacy nudges in three user studies. All three studies showed that app privacy nudges are indeed a promising approach to help users manage their privacy. App privacy nudges increased users’ awareness of privacy risks associated with apps on their phones, switched users’ attention to privacy management, and motivated users to review their app privacy settings. Additionally, the second study suggested that not all app privacy nudge contents equally help users manage their privacy. Rather, more effective nudge contents informed users of: (1) contexts in which their personal information has been accessed, (2) purposes for apps’ accessing their personal information, and (3) potential implications of secondary usage of users’ personal information. The third study showed that user engagement with nudges decreases as users receive repeated nudges. Nonetheless, the results of the third experiment also showed that users are more likely to engage with repeated nudges (1) if users have engaged with previous nudges, (2) if repeated nudges contain new in- formation (e.g., additional apps, not shown in earlier nudges, that accessed sensitive resources), or (3) if the nudge contents of repeated nudges resonate with users. The results of this dissertation suggest that mobile operating system providers should enrich their systems with app privacy nudges to assist users in managing their privacy. Additionally, the lessons learned in this dissertation may inform designing privacy…

▼ Obesity has become a major issue in advanced societies having serious impacts on various social as well as economic levels. In addition to the personal costs of obesity leading to serious and chronic diseases, obesity projects additional burdens upon society including lack of productivity, often resulting in increased dependence on governmental benefits, as well as increasing health care costs, most of which are paid for by taxes. This phenomenon has become especially prevalent in the United States and the United Kingdom, with both countries attempting to reduce obesity levels with programs that utilize varying levels of paternalism. As the costs to these societies have become unsustainable, both have begun to experiment with behavioral insights to address the faults in their current programs. The resulting policy tool, known as a nudge, focuses on consumers' choice environments that contribute to poor health decisions and reframes the choice structures to intuitively encourage healthier choices. While both countries continue to study the use of nudges to reduce obesity, there are large differences in how each country has utilized nudges as a policy tool. For this large-scale problem and others like it, having the resources to develop policy solutions is not enough to resolve the problem: a country must be able to properly implement the solutions for them to be effective. This paper examines the development of nudging in each country and determines whether their differences in policy application reflect a broader problem of obesity-related policy intervention.

▼ Nowadays, consumers are being exposed to a large selection of food alternatives with an aim of helping with health matters. For that reason, the consumption of healthy food has been increasing among people, but at the same time, the consumption of unhealthy food has expanded. Due to the advanced technology, there is more information available about health, which makes the consumers’ knowledge about diseases caused by their way of living to grow. Simultaneously, there has been studies proving that consumers’ choices do not often resemble their attitudes. Since consuming healthy food is more popular nowadays, this study had the aim of examining if consumers will choose a grocery store based on different attributes. The study is based on several theories that are the starting point for the study’s research questions which are; Does the selection of healthy food affect consumers’ choice of a grocery store? Does nudging of healthy food affect consumers’ choice of a grocery store? The theories that are used in this study are nudge theory, libertarian paternalism theory, behavioral economics, theory of reasoned action, theory of planned behavior, social marketing theory, choice architecture, cognitive architecture and status quo. The data was collected through a questionnaire, where different questions had the aim to measure what affects consumers when choosing a grocery store. In total, the study gathered a sample of 136 responses whereas 8 of them were removed from the study as outliers. The outcome of this study is based on two independent variables; healthy food and nudging and one dependent variable; choice of grocery store. These variables are composite variables created from a range of other variables. The composite variable healthy food is created from variables checklist, avoidance of unhealthy/unnecessary food, people’s affection, healthy thinking, food habits, attitude of healthy eating, past purchasing behavior, intention and behavior, same groceries and new groceries. The composite variable nudging is created from variables product placement, memory, product placement affection on consumers’ purchasing behavior and visible healthy food. The dependent variable choice of grocery stores was created from the variables; number of healthy food alternatives, price of healthy food, marketing of healthy food and place of grocery store. This study was analyzed in the data program STATA where a multiple linear regression was used to test the hypotheses. According to the result from the regression analysis, there is a significant level between healthy food and consumers' choice of grocery stores. In addition to that, the study shows that there is a significant level between nudging and consumers' choice of grocery stores. Thus, the null hypothesis of this study was rejected.

▼ This study looks at potential polycentric solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emission by engaging and nudging residents to lower their household s electricity consumption. More specifically, it seeks to nudge respondents towards energy conservational behavior using libertarian paternalism ideology and the principles of choice architecture. The study is focused on subjects in Finland, where the electricity bill is not a financial burden and society is environmentally responsible. Based on the limited data provided by an energy company, the analysis provides insights on the patterns of household s electricity consumption and comparison of electricity usage between household s with smart solutions and without. Based on previous research and findings of the study, a prepaid contract is suggested to nudge people to more sustainable behavior in regards to their energy consumption with long-term effects and without the need for any financial incentives.

▼ It is commonly believed that paternalism is at odds with libertarianism. Recent literature has suggested that there are forms of paternalism which are acceptable to libertarians: namely “nudging”, sometimes even referred to as “libertarian paternalism”. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to investigate the taxonomical question of how libertarianism, paternalism and nudging relate to each other. Secondly, to investigate whether, and if so when, paternalism is compatible with libertarianism. I argue that any action which is not coercive is compatible with libertarianism. Thus, any non-coercive paternalist action is compatible with libertarianism. I also argue that there are several paternalist action types, such as nudges, informing and incentivizing, which are not coercive, and thus are compatible with libertarianism.

▼ This dissertation comprises of essays in the field of development economics. Leveraging insights from psychology, mingling them in economic theory, and testing them through experimental (and quasi-experimental) methods, I study three policy questions: Does grading system affect student performance? Does symbolic incentive offered in a competitive game increase student attendance? Does institutional quality affect the provision of public goods and the perception of tax as a burden?
In the first chapter, I study whether level of discretization of reported grades to students affect their academic performance? This is the first experimental study to test how performance reporting using a coarse grading scale: {A,B,C,D,F} (Letter Grading System or LGS - the treatment group) or a very fine grading scale: [0,100] (Numerical Grading System or NGS - the control group) affects student performance. While I find no difference in average student performance between LGS and NGS, this negligible effect, however, masks important gender-differences in student performance with female students responding more positively to NGS and male students responding more positively to LGS. The theoretical model presented in the paper throws light on a possible mechanism (risk-attitudes) causing these gender-differences. This evidence is informative of the role that the chosen grading scale may have played in the widely seen gender-gap in student learning.
In the second chapter, I report the results of a field experiment conducted to study how student attendance changes when transformed into a strategic-decision using a competitive game setting. The game awarded points to students based on their daily attendance. Each student could track the weekly status of his/her game points, along with the game points of every other student in the class, thereby bringing an explicit strategic element to the intervention. The scoring rule had a novel weighting mechanism, designed to lower absenteeism by a greater degree in the weeks when students are more likely to be absent. This experiment was conducted with 217 classrooms, divided into two treatments (Group Game and Classroom Game) and one control group of a not-for-profit educational institution in India. Symbolic rewards were provided to the winners of the game in the treatment classrooms. The results show a significant positive effect on students whose attendance was greater than 75% while not much effect on the rest. This provides evidence of how the use of a simple competitive game with low-cost, symbolic rewards can efficiently and positively impact student attendance.
In the third chapter, coauthor Alberto Chong and I study the role that institutional quality plays in determining government’s effectiveness in delivering public goods and in, therefore, mediating the effects of higher taxation in an economy. This study is inspired from the observation that poorer countries, despite having a much smaller public sector and correspondingly a smaller tax burden than richer countries,…

▼ Since a large portion of our behaviour is automatic, what kind of agency and control do we humans have, and what are its limits? I address the question both from a historical perspective (through Aristotle’s philosophy) and a contemporary approach (engaging with recent empirical research).
I begin with Aristotle’s action theory, which has remarkable resonances with current issues. He claims our goals are determined by non-rational habituation, so the question arises how we can control our life’s ends if they cannot be set rationally. I argue that for Aristotle we control our goals insofar as we carefully shape our habits. Care for habits belongs, not just to the individual (who cannot care for her habituation’s first stages), but primarily to the political community. So individual autonomy depends on social care practices; and reason can establish goals not directly, but by carefully shaping habits.
I go on to argue that empirical evidence justifies a broadly similar account.
Intellectualists hold that all actions must be produced through reflection (i.e. a top-down coordination by reference to a goal); anti-intellectualists argue that some actions can be produced without reflection. Anti-intellectualists receive preliminary empirical support from evidence that there is a kind of normativity proper to automatic (i.e. reflection-independent) processes, which reveals the existence of automatic control. Is automatic control sufficient for the production of intentional actions? Anti-intellectualists have often pointed to skilful bodily action to argue that it is, but I contend that even skilled action requires top-down, reflective control, confirming recent intellectualist proposals.
So anti-intellectualism cannot find support in skilled-action phenomena; but it may find more promising evidence in decision-making studies. Framing effects in decision-making reveal that we control intention-formation processes automatically through background control: intuitive sense- making processes that are nonetheless susceptible to cognitive biases largely incorrigible by reflection. However, smart environmental design is able to protect intuitive control over decision-making. This supports a thesis called indirect intellectualism: like Aristotle, we should conceive of individual control over action as significantly dependent on reflectively shaping our practical environment.

▼ This dissertation comprises three essays that empirically evaluate the effects of policy interventions that have been inspired by insights from behavioral economics. The essays apply experimental or quasi-experimental designs to environmental, health and labor issues, in field and laboratory settings. They analyze if these nudges are effective in market environments, and if they are likely to continue to have the impact as their popularity continues to grow. The first chapter analyzes policy banning pharmaceutical representatives from providing off-site meals to doctors. It examines the effect on the type of medications prescribed, pharmaceutical and overall medical spending, and self-reported health measures, using the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey, and individual level difference-in-differences regressions. The analysis focuses on medications which are still on-patent but are in the same class as a generic medication, and finds that the regulation significantly decreased the likelihood that an individual took one of these medications, implying savings. There is no adverse impact on rates of physical or mental health, or whether they report that health limits daily activities.
The second and third chapter use laboratory experiments to test how awareness impacts nudges. Awareness has been suggested as a way to make defaults more ethical, but could make these nudges less effective. Awareness of the impacts of a
nudge could also occur as subjects gain experience, providing information simulates experience.
The second employs a loss framing
nudge in a real effort task. I replicate the standard empirical finding that loss framing (penalties) increases performance (in comparison to bonuses), but show that this effect disappears when participants are aware of the
nudge. Additionally, I find that the majority of subjects prefer gain framing. Awareness increases the preference for gain framing.
In the third a default
nudge is employed in a carbon offsets purchase decision. All
subject are given the option to buy an offset. One option is randomly selected. Subjects in the Aware condition then see information about the typical impacts of defaults. I find that the default was not effective at increasing purchases, and that information did not make it more likely that subjects change their selection.

▼ This dissertation consists of three essays that evaluate the effectiveness of interventions promoting residential energy conservation. I study three programs that were implemented as natural field experiments by energy utilities in the United States. In the experiments, households were randomly assigned to a control group that was not exposed to the program or to treatment groups that participated in the program(s). The main objective of this research agenda is to generate insights that help design effective energy policy.
In the first chapter, I study a program that provided weekly emails containing information about a customer's natural gas expenditure to more than 150,000 households in California. I find that exposure to the emails caused significant reductions in natural gas use. Additional analyses suggest that households changed their heating behavior in response to the program. Furthermore, reductions in usage persisted over a 20-month treatment period.
The second chapter focuses on the interaction between a voluntary financial rewards program for reductions in energy use and the Home Energy Report (HER), a repeated mailer that compares a recipient's consumption to that of similar households. We test whether the introduction of financial incentives increased energy savings by households that also received the HER. Our findings show that the two programs complemented each other in several important ways and promoted larger energy savings by a broader set of customers than the HER alone.
Finally, the third chapter investigates whether social nudges, such as the HER, are
subject to crowd out effects. Crowd out occurs when the effectiveness of a new social
nudge is negatively affected by previous exposure to an existing social
nudge. We use two distinct social nudges in an experiment in which households are exposed to no
nudge, one
nudge in isolation, or both nudges in combination. To determine the extent of crowd out, we compare the effect of the combined intervention to the summation of the effects of each
nudge in isolation. We do not find evidence of crowd out. In contrast, the combined effect was marginally larger than the sum of the individual effects, although the difference is not statistically significant.

In this work, we use the Nudge approach to solve behavioral problems that business firms may have to face. In the first chapter, we start by exposing some issues that the classical economic approach struggles with, before presenting the Nudge approach and why we believe it is relevant to the problems that businesses still face today. In the second chapter, we change the formulations of the invitations to participate to web surveys, using Nudge principles, in order to improve participation rate. Most Nudges increase the proportion of individuals giving their e-mail address, but only those that acknowledge the respondent's effort increase participation rate. In the third chapter, we use the Nudge approach's teachings to improve the measurement of job satisfaction. We measure the satisfaction of interns every month during their internships with a very short survey, and compare it to a lengthy survey administered at the end of the internship. We find that satisfaction during the first month of the internship is highly correlated with final satisfaction, which makes it possible to detect potential problems very early. In the final chapter, we use Nudges to improve productivity by making a simple task more playful, a process called “gamification”. Nudges generate the same increase in productivity as the monetary incentives, without the added cost of the latter. Moreover, unless monetary incentives are implemented at the same time, Nudges…

▼ This thesis aimed to understand current marketing practices, knowledge, facilitators and barriers of
nudge marketing of fruits and vegetables (FV) by food service (FS) management in post-secondary institutions. Nudging uses subtle marketing techniques to promote purchasing of products or behavior changes without coercing customers or forbidding options. Twelve participants from 10 institutions were recruited from the Canadian College and University Food Service Association for semi-structured phone interviews. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed via thematic and descriptive analyses. All institutions were marketing FV in various ways. Six out of 10 were implementing nudging for FV. Feasibility of nudging depended on the type of
nudge. Nudges perceived as difficult were typically costly and required structural changes and/or communication with external departments. Nudges perceived as easy were least costly and required little coordination. The results provide needed information on the most acceptable and feasible FV
nudge interventions for future testing.

▼ This thesis explores the question: Why do even those with environmental awareness and attitudes often fail to act in an environmental manner? This question begs a second: How can environmental behaviors be engendered? To explore these questions, I first worked to understand the current state of the environment to determine if there is an environmental crisis. The evidence suggests there is an environmental problem, and further, that a majority of humans are aware and opposed to environmental degradation. I then study the environmental value-action gap, or the gap between an individual's environmental attitudes and lack of environmental action. To understand this phenomenon, I studied the individual barriers to action presented in the literature. While compelling, I believe a study of the systemic barriers must also be addressed and discussed the ways in which structural factors work to hinder environmental action. I conclude my thesis with a novel discussion of the use of
nudge theory to remove the gap between environmental values and action. However, I note there must be the development of a Critical
