X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a powerful tool to characterize or localize inner flaws and to verify the geometric conformity of an object. In contrast to medical applications, the scanned object in non-destructive testing (NDT) might be very large and composed of high-attenuation materials and consequently the use of a standard circular trajectory for data acquisition would be impossible due to constraints in space. For this reason, the use of robotic arms is one of the acknowledged new trends in NDT since it allows more flexibility in acquisition trajectories and therefore could be used for 3D reconstruction of hardly accessible regions that might be a major limitation of classical CT systems. A robotic X-ray inspection platform has been installed at CEA LIST. The considered system integrates two robots that move the X-ray generator and detector. Among the new challenges brought by robotic CT, we focus in this thesis more particularly on the limited access…

▼ This Thesis proposes three main objectives: (i) to provide the concept of a new generalized non-standard synthesis model that would provide the framework for incorporating other non-standard synthesis approaches; (ii) to explore dynamic sound modeling through the application of new non-standard synthesis techniques and procedures; and (iii) to experiment with dynamic sound synthesis for the creation of novel sound objects. In order to achieve these objectives, this Thesis introduces a new paradigm for non-standard synthesis that is based in the algorithmic assemblage of minute wave segments to form sound waveforms. This paradigm is called Extended Waveform Segment Synthesis (EWSS) and incorporates a hierarchy of algorithmic models for the generation of microsound structures. The concepts of EWSS are illustrated with the development and presentation of a novel non-standard synthesis system, the Dynamic Waveform Segment Synthesis (DWSS). DWSS features and combines a variety of algorithmic models for direct synthesis generation: list generation and permutation, tendency masks, trigonometric functions, stochastic functions, chaotic functions and grammars. The core mechanism of DWSS is based in an extended application of Cellular Automata. The potential of the synthetic capabilities of DWSS is explored in a series of Case Studies where a number of sound object were generated revealing (i) the capabilities of the system to generate sound morphologies belonging to other non-standard synthesis approaches and, (ii) the capabilities of the system of generating novel sound objects with dynamic morphologies. The introduction of EWSS and DWSS is preceded by an extensive and critical overview on the concepts of microsound synthesis, algorithmic composition, the two cultures of computer music, the heretical approach in composition, non- standard synthesis and sonic emergence along with the thorough examination of algorithmic models and their application in sound synthesis and electroacoustic composition. This Thesis also proposes (i) a new definition for “algorithmic composition”, (ii) the term “totalistic algorithmic composition”, and (iii) four discrete aspects of non-standard synthesis.

▼ The study of entanglement has gained prominence in
recent years due to the advent of fields such as Quantum Optics and
Quantum Information Theory ? advances that have harnessed such
counter-intuitive quantum phenomena into elements of everyday life,
improving it in the process. Ideal quantum systems, ?closed? to the
outside world, remain quantum forever and thus manage to retain
entanglement. Real quantum systems, however, are ?open? to the
environment and are therefore susceptible to the phenomenon of
decoherence. The resultant loss of entanglement is a major
hindrance to the effectiveness of quantum information tasks. In
this thesis we have studied the evolution of entanglement in
various types of open quantum systems (OQS) coupled in various ways
to local baths. We have also studied existing ways and means of
controlling the decay of entanglement and have proposed a new
method of doing so. We have studied the evolution of entanglement
in OQS undergoing Markovian dynamics by using the Lindblad master
equation as well as the method of quantum trajectories. We have
analyzed the onset of the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death
in finite as well as infinite dimensional OQS, connected either
locally to a thermal bath or its squeezed variant, or via a quantum
non-demolition-type (QND-type) interaction to a local thermal bath.
We have found that the QND-type system-bath interaction works best
to conserve entanglement in finite dimensional systems, whereas a
squeezed thermal bath causes entanglement sudden death even at zero
temperature. We have also studied some well-known methods of
controlling decoherence in open systems with respect to their
ability of preserving entanglement. Some of these procedures
include coupling the system to a thermal bath of photonic crystals
where the photonic band gap suppresses decoherence, modulation of
the systembath frequency in an attempt to contain decoherence,
using the method of resonance fluorescence.

▼ As a solitary wave is usually used to characterize the behavior of a tsunami, a hydraulic experiment is set up for a detailed study of the associated celerity and particle trajectory. The size of the water tank of this experiment in this paper is 21m long, 0.5m width and 0.7m deep. Wave maker method used by Goring (1978) for simulating Solitary Waves is applied in the experiment of particle
trajectories and mass transport.
We also extend the particle
trajectories theory to higher order that contains the
non-linear terms.
The method presented in this paper fixes the position of the camera, and the grid-point board is located in the center of the water tank, so that the particle and the two-dimensional grid surface coincide. Then, we analyze the particle
trajectories within the grid with image processing techniques. This method not only save time of coordinate calibration, but also get a more accurate measurement.
The water particle used in this paper has 1mm diameter, because it is difficult to locate the exact position of a large particle. Because of the small size in this experiment, we can get better results and the error is reduced.
To compare with the experiment, the third-order Eulerian solution of Feton(1972) is transferred to the Lagrangian system in the present study to get the particle velocity.
Then an integral with respect to time is used to obtain the trajectory. The accuracy of the theory is good, especially in the regime of small amplitude. For large wave amplitude in terms of the water depth, a higher order solution is suggested for the future study.

The actual system of thought is founded on the use and proliferation of dualist distinctions that are responsible for the weakening of our sentiments of human solidarity thus represents an obstacle to the future social and human development. Confronting this model on its own terms leads to a dead end, for any objection to its metaphysical reign is expected to be formulated in the same terms of the metaphysical vocabulary that the standardized model of philosophy uses therefore we need to change the field of action trough the idea of efficient democracy inside the economy of knowledge that is built as a rigid and centralized system. Establishing a democracy of thought implies establishing a system of thought that doesn’t rely on a metaphysical purpose beyond Man. I rely on the research done by Richard Rorty and Michel Foucault on the relation between various forms of power, knowledge and language. Furthermore I use the theoretical model developed by François Laruelle known as Non-standard philosophy in order to analyze the shortcomings of both Rorty and Foucault. Non-standard philosophy demonstrates how all forms of philosophy are structured around a…

▼ Bilateral tasks requiring asymmetric force production are more complex that symmetric force production tasks because they require error compensatory negative coordination. The purpose of the present research was to investigate a complex bilateral task while manipulating visual angles and task coefficient conditions. The manipulated visual angles were 1o, 10o, 32o and 59 o and the task coefficients involved placing equal coefficients on each hand (i.e., control) and unequal coefficients on each hand (i.e., left greater than right and right greater than left). Fifteen right handed volunteers between the ages of 20 to 35 years participated in the study. The results revealed reduced task error, decreased variability and stronger negative coordination at an increased visual feedback in each task coefficient condition. Even though, the RMSE was reduced at a visual angle of 10o (i.e., visual gain of 80 pixels/N), reduction in bilateral force variability and a strong negative coordination between hands was seen at the visual angle of 32o (i.e., visual gain of 256 pixels/N). In sum, this study achieved an important purpose of identifying visual feedback gains that can be used to improve motor performance during a complex bilateral task. These visual feedback conditions can be used for retraining bilateral tasks in patients with neurological impairments. ( en )

▼ In this thesis, we present a comparative study of conventional particle filtering (PF) algorithms for tracking applications. Through the review from the generic PF to more recent Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based PFs, we will revisit the sample impoverishment problem. For all PF methods using resampling process, maintaining appropriate sample diversity is a big problem. Although Gilks et al. proposed an MCMC based PF to avoid this problem, their method sometimes fails due to small process noise. Therefore, we propose an improved MCMC move PF method which employs an adaptive MCMC move. This adaptive MCMC process elastically manages the MCMC proposal density function to circumvent the sample impoverishment problem efficiently and gives better sample diversity for posterior approximation. ▼ The Minimal Scale Invariant extension of the Standard Model (MSISM) is a model of low-energy particle physics which is identical to the Standard Model except for the inclusion of an additional complex singlet scalar and tree-level scale invariance. Scale invariance is a classical symmetry which is explicitly broken by quantum corrections whose interplay with the quartic couplings can be used to trigger electroweak symmetry breaking. The scale invariant Standard Model suffers from a number of problems, however the inclusion of a complex singlet scalar results in a perturbative and phenomenologically viable theory. We present a thorough and systematic investigation of the MSISM for a number of representative scenarios along two of its three classified types of flat direction. In these scenarios we determine the permitted quartic coupling parameter space, using both theoretical and experimental constraints, and apply these limits to make predictions of the scalar mass spectrum and the energy scale at which scale invariance is broken. We calculate the one-loop effective potential and the one-loop beta functions of the pertinent couplings of the MSISM specifically for this purpose. We also discuss the phenomenological implications of these scenarios, in particular, whether they realise explicit or spontaneous CP violation, contain neutrino masses or provide dark matter candidates. Of particular importance is the discovery of a new minimal scale invariant model which provides maximal spontaneous CP violation, can naturally incorporate neutrino masses, produces a massive stable scalar dark matter candidate and can remain perturbative up to the Planck scale. It can be argued that the last property, along with the classical scale invariance, can potentially solve the gauge hierarchy problem for this model.

▼ When people are listening to others they are not just interpreting the speech in order to understand and participate in a communicative act. While interpreting the linguistic information, listeners are attentive to extralinguistic information about the speaker about which they make assumptions based on the accent and content that they hear. Many researchers have studied language attitude to see how different accents compare to each other for different speakers and listeners. Although this research has been done for many different accents, none have been done comparing standard and non-standard accents of Canadian English, or that account for the native accent of the listener. A number of university students from South-Western Ontario were surveyed to elicit general language attitude scores on a series of 11 measures for 8 different voice clips differing in terms of standardness (Standard vs. Non-Standard), content (Academic vs. Colloquial), and accent (British vs. Canadian). A comparison of the mean scores on the accents revealed a general preference for British and standard accents, and a general dislike of Canadian and non-standard accents. A Principal Component Analysis identified a difference in response pattern between native Canadian English and non-native Canadian English speakers. When combined with general qualitative descriptions of the voice clips offered by participants it appears that language attitude is greatly influenced by perception of prestige and familiarity with the accent. Listeners prefer readily identifiable accents that are held in esteem by the greater speech community, while they dislike accents which are less clearly intelligible and lack prestige. Listeners were also more critical of accents with which they were more familiar. Such findings are important because they can help us to identify potential sources of unequal access to opportunity in society as influenced by how people speak.
Thesis
Master of Science (MSc)
Whenever we listen to other people speak we are not just taking in information and trying to understand what they are saying. People will tend to pass judgement on other speakers for a number of reasons, including what they are saying, and how they are saying it. Many studies have studied this phenomenon, known as language attitude by linguists, to see how different accents compare to each other for different speakers and listeners. Although this research has been done for many different accents, none have been done comparing standard and non-standard accents of Canadian English. This research project involved surveying a number of Canadian university students to find out which Canadian and British accents they liked and disliked, and in what ways. I found that Canadians tend to prefer Standard Academic British English over less-educated sounding Canadian accents. Since there was a difference in preference between Canadian English speakers and non-Canadian English speakers, it appears that familiarity might allow people to be more critical of the accents or dialects…

▼ Novel alternatives to current carbon capture and sequestration technologies are being developed based on the interesting ability of certain amines, such as methylpiperidines (MP), to undergo liquid-liquid phase separation. This thesis reports the thermodynamic properties of (methylpiperidine + H2O) and (methylpiperidine + H2O + CO2) solutions as model systems for phase separating amines. The
standard partial molar volumes and heat capacities for aqueous solutions of N-MP, and N-MP hydrochloride salts were determined by densimetry and calorimetry. A semi-empirical model was fitted to these values which could be used to improve the extrapolation accuracy of the room temperature thermodynamic properties of the amines up to high temperatures. Quantitative 13C NMR was used to determine the speciation and formation constants of aqueous 2-methylpiperidine carbamate, a species not previously reported in literature. Furthermore, the conformation of the carbamate was determined by 2D NMR and supported by density functional theory calculations.

Contemporary communication practices of English are highly diversified as a result of the global expansion of English and its increasing status through processes of colonization and globalization. Apart from conventional usages of English in L1 set-tings, other instances in which English is used for the means of communication are encompassed in the paradigm of World Englishes (WEs). The diversification of Eng-lish speaking practices undoubtedly also challenges teaching practices heavily rely-ing on the learner’s exposure of standard forms produced by native-speakers only. Considering the accelerating use of English in L2…

This thesis is the fruit of a research project which marries translation practice and theory. Separated into two volumes, it explores questions related to the translation of slang in fictional texts. The first volume is a critical commentary composed of three parts, and the second a translation from French into English of the novel Moi non by Patrick Goujon (Gallimard, 2003). Since the plot unfolds in the banlieue of Paris, the critical component investigates the way in which marginalised youth can express themselves through slang, a variety of non-standard language. Often representative of a specific place and identity, slang constitutes one of many forms of expression that contribute to setting marginalised youth apart from dominant groups. Such use of language raises a number of questions, both concrete and abstract in nature, when one decides to transcribe and translate it in a work of fiction. Translators often employ standard language to render this voice in the translated text or otherwise make use of an “equivalent” slang. The proposed translation of Moi non embodies an alternative method inspired by an overall informal style of writing, as well as by the creative devices employed in rap lyrics and in the creation of slang words and expressions. In an effort to avoid suggesting a specific…

Throughout the Civil War (1861-1865), thousands of low ranking soldiers on both sides of the conflict took up their pens to inquire after their families and give news from the front. Usually semiliterate, most of these soldiers were far from mastering written conventions. The 170,000-word corpus, on which this thesis is based, is composed of 366 letters written by 80 privates, corporals and sergeants from Virginia. Their idiosyncratic and ingenuous spellings as well as their use of non-standard morphosyntactic variations offer a great opportunity to gain further insight into the vernacular spoken by white lower-class people in Virginia around the middle of the 19th century.According to Guy Bailey (1997), certain specificities of the Southern American Vernacular English (SAVE) appeared after the Civil War, as a reaction against Northern domination and the humiliation caused by the defeat. The non standard variations found in the Virginia Civil War Corpus tend to question this hypothesis and reveal that most of the features, that are today associated with SAVE, were already present in low ranking soldiers' writings.Despite the phonetic spelling and the use of non-standard grammatical and lexical forms, the letters reveal that the soldiers were fully aware that their vernacular speech was not in line with academic conventions. We thus observe a constant tension between the academic prescriptive norm and non-standard variations. We may wonder if this…

▼ Joining ceramics to metals is difficult because of
residual stresses that can develop during the cooling process.
Scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) is a well-recognized tool to
characterize the elastic properties of materials and can be applied
to materials with elastic discontinuities such as the interface of
a ceramic/metal joint. Acoustic information was obtained by
applying the V(z) curve method, which measured the output signal of
the transducer as a function of the position, z. The velocity of
the surface acoustic waves, Vsaw, of the material was calculated
from the V(z) curve. In this work, a simulation of the V(z) curve
was updated. The pupil-function splitting method was combined with
the angular-spectrum approach of V(z) theory in order to obtain the
V(z) curve for the interface between different materials. The Vsaw
value at the interface was calculated from the simulated V(z)
curve. A series of experiments were performed to measure the Vsaw
values at the interface of a Si3N4/Cu joint using the SAM. By
comparing the measured values with the calculated values, the
reliability of this simulation was verified. The simulation can be
used to test the boundary conditions of bimaterial
samples.

▼ A novel method is described in detail for steering light in many directions without moving mechanical parts. The method involves a combination of liquid crystal cells and polarizing beam splitters. The polarization at each beam splitter is controlled by applying a signal to its corresponding liquid crystal cell. A study of light steering techniques is described for efficient beam placement, in a line and plane. These techniques permit accurate, non-mechanical, beam steering limited by the response time of the liquid crystal cells. A theoretical limit to the number of discrete directions is described and closely approached for a one dimensional system.

In this research, we build non-standard politics from what we call philosophical-politics. Philosophical-politics are built as philosophies, they are philosophies per se, and therefore they are politics. Politics because they are not freed from the Greek horizon of the city or of the plane of transcendence. We are looking for non-standard politics which can investigate all the philosophical field in order to transform it and characterise its movements and operations. This is why the different problematics we address are all considered as “politics” detached from their Greek horizon, the horizon of the city. Non-standard politics is a subject and exists apart from philosophy and World which are identical. It doesn’t destroy philosophy which is a decision about Reality, but it modifies it according to the unilateral dualysis modality which shows this decision in order to reveal its unconscious mechanisms. In this research, we can see that politics seeks transformation of the Reality through thinking and programs human transformation through changing his thought.

▼ Inconsistent and collapse models of arithmetic are
presented in the language and semantics of the simple
paraconsistent logic LP. I present a logic which extends LP by the
addition of a sensible conditional connective and quantifiers. This
logic, called A 3 , is specified as a Hilbert style axiom system
and a Gentzen-style sequent calculus, and these systems are shown
to be equivalent. I show the sequent calculus to be sound and
complete for the A3 semantics and prove the elimination theorem.
Finally, I specify arithmetical axiom systems for the collapse
models and show that these axiom systems capture some salient
properties of their associated models.

▼ This thesis analyses numerical methods used in finding
solutions of diferential equations. Numerical methods are viewed as
discrete dynamical systems that give useful information on
continuous dynamical systems defined by systems of (ordinary)
diferential equations. We analyse
non-
standard finite difference
schemes that have no spurious fixed-points compared to the
dynamical system under consideration, the linear
stability/instability property of the fixed-points being the same
for both the discrete and continuous systems. We obtain a sharper
condition for the elementary stability of the schemes. For more
complex dynamical systems which are dissipative, we design schemes
that replicate this property. Furthermore, we investigate the
impact of the above analysis on the numerical solution of partial
differential equations. We specifically focus on reaction-diffusion
equations that arise in many fields of engineering and applied
sciences. Often their solutions enjoy the follow- ing essential
properties: Stability/instability of the fixed points for the space
independent equation, the conservation of energy for the stationary
equation, and boundedness and positivity. We design new
non-
standard finite diference schemes which replicate these
properties. Our construction make use of three strategies: the
renormalization of the denominator of the discrete derivative,
non-local approximation of the nonlinear terms and simple
functional relation between step sizes. Numerical results that
support the theory are provided. Copyright

▼ This thesis concerns the incompleteness phenomenon of first-order arithmetic: no consistent, r.e. theory T can prove every true arithmetical sentence. The first incompleteness result is due to Gödel; classic generalisations are due to Rosser, Feferman, Mostowski, and Kripke. All these results can be proved using self-referential statements in the form of provable fixed points. Chapter 3 studies sets of fixed points; the main result is that disjoint such sets are creative. Hierarchical generalisations are considered, as well as the algebraic properties of a certain collection of bounded sets of fixed points. Chapter 4 is a systematic study of independent and flexible formulae, and variations thereof, with a focus on gauging the amount of
induction needed to prove their existence. Hierarchical generalisations of classic results are given by adapting a method of Kripke’s. Chapter 5 deals with end-extensions of models of fragments of arithmetic, and their relation to flexible formulae. Chapter 6 gives Orey-Hájek-like characterisations of partial conservativity over different kinds of theories. Of particular note is
a characterisation of partial conservativity over IΣ₁. Chapter 7 investigates the possibility to generalise the notion of flexibility in the spirit of Feferman’s theorem on the ‘interpretability of inconsistency’. Partial results are given by using Solovay functions to extend a recent theorem of Woodin.

▼ The thesis presents three theories of generative grammar, namely the
Standard Theory (ST), Government and Binding theory (GB) and Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) and explains how these handle
non-finite (infinitival) predicates. All of the three theories deal with how sentences are generated in the English language but they have a different approach. Both ST and GB are connected to the name of Noam Chomsky who is considered to be the father of generative syntax. GB is the improved version of ST as the constantly emerging problems resulted in the creation of it. LFG was developed by Joan Bresnan and her followers parallel to GB. It is remarkable as it offers an approach that is absolutely divergent from the two previous ones.

▼ The amount of data in the world and in our lives seems ever-increasing and there is no end in sight. Such a situation is supported by omnipresent computers along with inexpensive disks and online storage. In order to get the best from these data that overwhelm us, computers give us the opportunity to analyse them for decision making. For example, as reported in the literature, dairy farmers in New Zealand have to make a tough business decision every year : which cows to retain in their herd and which to sell off to an abattoir. Each cow's breeding and milk production history, age, health problems, and and many other factors influence this decision. About 700 attributes for each of several million cows have been recorded over the years. This is an example of large data set (large number of individuals : several millions) containing high-dimensional descriptions (large number of variables : 700). Classically, the observed value on each variable for each individual has a scalar data type.
Large multidimensional data sets abound in real applications. Large size and high dimension are two aspects of the complexity inherent in these data sets. In the framework of this thesis, we are not interested in the complexity induced by the dimensionality...
One way to deal with large size data sets is to summarize the data and use adequate methods for mining the summarized data. Summarising data, as we understand it here, does not reduce the dimensionality. It reduces the number of individuals. In the summarized data table, each row can be viewed as the description of a concept, which is a high level individual (for example a given species of birds) containing lower level individuals in its extent (for instance all birds from the given species). The variability of elements in an extent should be revealed by the row describing the concept in the summarized table, hence the use of data structures in the cells of the summarized data table.
Summarising data using data structures leads to descriptors which are no longer scalar type attributes. For instance, knowing that a cow nears the end of its productive life at 8 years, one might group together all cows which are at least 8 years old. For such a group, the observed value on attribute 'AGE' would be an interval like [8,15], if we assume that there is no cow over 15 years old. Likewise, the other attributes used to describe a group of cows would be structure-valued, leading to a
non-
standard data table. In other words, each value of a variable used to describe a group of cows would be a structure. Intervals, multivalued-data, distributions, histograms, functions, time series, graphs, and so on are examples of structures.
To our knowledge, there is currently only one complete software environment that is publicly and freely available for tabular structure-valued data analysis. The Symbolic Objects Data Analysis System (SODAS2) was designed and implemented as a "black-box" and consequently does not provide necessary flexibility and adaptability in order to support research activity…

▼ The present PhD research concerns three
non-
standard phonetic variants, known as specific to the adolescents from Moroccan immigration, and the meso-social meanings linked to these variants. The meso-social level is defined here as the profiles or social personae (Coupland 2001). My hypothesis is that macro-socially homogeneous speakers use
non standard variants according to their belonging to contrasted meso-social profiles.
This problem is tackled through the analysis of authentic data, collected during a one-year ethnographic survey inside of two Brussels schools. These schools had a mostly female and immigrated population. Among the two of them, a peer group constituting a community of practice (Eckert 2000, 2005) was chosen as the focus of the study. This ethnographic gathering of data has a double aim: (i) first, it has to allow to determine what the profiles specific to the investigated peer groups are; (ii) secondly, a long-term survey must allow to collect speech as close as possible of the speakers’ vernacular.
The three
non standard variants are the followings:
(i) The reduced vowels: they are strongly reduced vowels that can completely disappear from the sound signal, in very atypical positions according to
standard French.
(ii) The back /A/: these realisations of /A/ are characterized by the backing of their articulation point, whose consequence is to move their timbre closer to this of /ɔ/ ;
(iii) The marked variants of /r/: this large designation includes trill fricatives and fricatives produced with a large amount of noise.
Analyzing the meso-social meaning of
non standard variants requires a double methodology, both qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative part concerns the analysis of ethnographic data (interviews and fieldwork notes). It leads to the discovery of three contrasted speaker profiles, that is to say the messing-up girls, the provocatives and the modests.
In the second part of the analysis, the existence of a link between the different speaker profiles and the use of each of the marked variants was investigated through statistical independence tests (chi square tests). These tests underline that the reduced vowels and the marked variants of /r/ are more used by the messing-up and the provocative girls, that is to say to speaker profiles which distance the traditional Moroccan and Muslim values.
At the opposite, the back /A/ seem to have a double face, because they are linked with two very different profiles, the provocatives and the modests. This variant is also often mentioned as characteristic of the lower class language (Jamin 2005). It seems thus that the back /A/ have multiple meanings, whose point in common would be pejoration.
If we come back to the initial hypothesis, the use of marked variants thus appears to be linked to the speakers’ belonging to contrasted profiles. However, these profiles are not the only factor to have an influence: the results of the tests show that, jointly to the profiles, the school has also an influence on the use of marked variants. This…

▼ Studies of English spelling have primarily focussed on correspondences between spelling and sound among core,
standard spellings. Segmental-level correspondences have been examined in detail (Venezky 1970, Cummings 1988, Carney 1994, Rollings 2004), while recent work shows that English spellings also encode supra-segmental information (Evertz and Primus 2013, Evertz 2014). An outstanding problem is the degree to which morphemic spelling is applied across the system (c.f. Venezky 1970: 120; Carney 1994: 18). Berg et al. (2014) observe that the spelling of affixes is more stable than the spelling of bases, hence <profane> alternates with <profanity>, not *<profanety> or *<profaneity>. Yet none of these theories address in detail why certain spellings are chosen over others.
This thesis examines how English spellings are formed, particularly where compromises are made in the representation of both morphological and phonological information. The primary focus is on the spelling of inflections, but also derivations, names and
non-
standard spellings. The study also examines how we know if a spelling is a good phonographic match for a word. Five principles of spelling formation are proposed.
1. Any-Spelling principle: All words must have some spelling.
2. Distinctiveness principle (DSTNCT): Different words should have different spellings.
3. Identity Preservation principle (IdP): Related words should have related spellings. Hence complex words take their spelling from the spellings of their subcomponents.
4. Phonographic Matching principle (PhM): A word?s spelling should represent its phonological form.
5. Invariance principle (INVRNC): Established spellings cannot be changed.
The principles are manifested differently according to the category of word being spelt. Compound words adhere strongly to IdP. Regular inflections follow IdP by default, <jump, jumped, jumping>, but may involve PhM amendments, hence <dope, doped, doping> not <dope, *dopeed, *dopeing>. Affixed derivatives show similar patterns, <mode, modal>, regardless of stress-shifting, <origin, original>, while etymological influences complicate the picture, <possible, probable>. DSTNCT sometimes differentiates lexical homophones. <flour>, <flower>, but it is common among certain names, <Webb>, <Blu Tac>, <OutKast>.
Non-
standard spellings violate INVRNC by definition, and the conditions for spelling variation arise in part due to phonological changes. Abbreviations frequently obey IdP, e.g. <a.k.a.>, but clippings may not, <telly>, <fridge>. Etymological spelling is deemed to be an example of IdP, either among unchanged base forms, <macchiato>, or adapted polymorphemic words, <philosophy>. This re-assessment helps to solve the long-standing problem of how to integrate etymological spelling into synchronic theories of spelling. A flexible unit of spelling, the complex pleremic unit, is identified and it accounts for IdP?s various manifestations. Native, monomorphemic base forms are not examined in detail as the priority is how new and complex words are spelt.…
