▼ In Nigeria hat sich in den letzten circa 20 Jahren eine Filmindustrie entwickelt, die zu der drittgrößten der Welt gezählt wird. Mit ihren Videofilmproduktionen überschwemmt die Industrie den ganzen subsaharischen Teil Afrikas. Auch auf der globalen Ebene sind die Produktionen Nollywoods, wie die Industrie genannt wird, in allen Ländern erhältlich, in denen eine nigerianische Diaspora vorhanden ist. Diese Diplomarbeit untersucht mehrere Aspekte des Phänomens Nollywood, wobei das Hauptaugenmerk auf das Genre der Horrorfilme in diesem Filmschaffen gelegt wird. Erstens wird im Sinne einer ethnohistorischen Betrachtung die Einbettung des Phänomens in die historischen und ethnischen Gegebenheiten Nigerias untersucht. Auch die Entwicklung des Filmschaffens in Nigeria wird beleuchtet, um die Wurzeln Nollywoods besser zu verstehen. Zweitens werden, unter Anwendung Pierre Bourdieus theoretischen und methodischen Ansätzen der Praxeologie, die Produktionsbedingungen untersucht, unter denen die Videofilme Nollywoods entstehen. Im Rahmen einer Analyse der Konsumption der Videofilme wurde auch eine Feldforschung unter Mitgliedern der nigerianischen Diasporagemeinde in Wien gemacht. Dabei wurden qualitative Interviews geführt. Die Interviewpartner wurden im Rahmen von thematisch fokussierten Interviews zu ihren Sehgewohnheiten, aber auch zur Frage, warum die Produkte Nollywoods, und hier besonders die Horrorfilme, so erfolgreich sind, befragt. Die Einbettung Nollywoods in eine globalisierte Welt wird unter Zuhilfenahme von Arjun Appadurais theoretischem Konzept der „scapes“ untersucht. Mehrere Horrorfilme werden auf Elemente untersucht, die immer wieder vorkommen und daher das Genre auszeichnen. So sind zum Beispiel die Elemente von Geheimgesellschaften und Geldmagie häufig. Da viele Filme zur Zeit der Militärdiktaturen mit eingeschränkter Meinungsfreiheit entstanden sind, werden diese Elemente als Allegorien auf illegal, zum Beispiel durch Korruption, zu Geld und Macht gekommene Personen gedeutet. Dies erklärt auch zum Teil die Beliebtheit der Horrorfilme. Das Publikum versteht die Andeutungen und kann sich mit der Kritik identifizieren. Hexerei, in Nigeria oft Juju genannt, ist ein weiteres zentrales Element der Horrorfilme. Dies führt im innernigerianischen Diskurs zu großen Kontroversen. Sowohl staatliche Stellen, als auch intellektuelle Kreise, werfen den Produkten Nollywoods vor, Nigeria als rückständig und abergläubig darzustellen. Diesem innernigerianischen Diskurs um Nollywood wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit nachgegangen. Zentral an Nollywood ist, dass die Filme Wünsche und Begierden der afrikanischen Bevölkerung widerspiegeln und deshalb sind diese Filme als Quelle für die kultur- und sozialanthropologische Forschung sehr interessant. In ihnen findet ein Diskurs über die momentane Lage in Afrika statt, der sich an ein afrikanisches Publikum richtet. ▼ Since its emergence two decades ago, the Nollywood film industry is fast becoming social, cultural and economic phenomenon among Malawian audiences. Every year, Nollywood actors visit Malawi and some Malawi print media have columns dedicated to Nollywood. According to unofficial statistics carried out by this study, nine out of every ten film enthusiasts in Malawi’s rural areas are Nollywood fanatics, and at least seven out of ten people in the urban areas frequently watch Nollywood films. The films are more popular than both Hollywood and Bollywood films. It could be argued that this popularity is due to the reason that the films are cheaper to buy. Another reason is that the proliferation of free-to-air satellite dishes has made these films easily accessible for the Malawian audience. Notwithstanding these perspectives, this study reveals that unprecedented appeal to Nigerian made films is first and foremost a result of cultural identity. The study, carried out among nine communities across Malawi represented by focus groups, demonstrates that viewers enjoy watching the cultural portrayals manifested in the films by the characters which, they feel, are similar to their own real life and experiences. Taking into account the widespread patronage of Nollywood films, it is safe to assume that these films are making an impact on the local audiences. Based on focus group discussions and analysis of the six case study films by 83 participants in selected areas across Malawi between 2012 and 2013, the study findings indicate that there is a problem of power relations in Malawian society based on gender and iii sex. Men have the upperhand in decision making, access to resources and education opportunities. The study reveals that emergence of the films in Malawi is offering another perspective of gender and social relations: the films’ portrayal of women shows that it is possible for them to have equal opportunities and power relations as their male counterparts. As the case study films were representative of Nollywood films owing to the fact that they represented women/gender and gender relations similary, this study therefore suggests that the films have a potential to bring about social change in Malawian communities. Through the responses of participating audiences that encompassed both men and women, the study reveals that the cinematic portrayals, especially those of female characters, have the potential to change the social perception of women and womanhood. The study uses continentalisation ( as adapted in Omoniyi, 2014b) as a conceptual framework in interpreting and analysing audiences’ responses to female representations in Nollywood films. The study observes that both Nigerian (as depicted by the film characters) and Malawian audiences share common cultural aspects that are predominantly African. ▼ This study interrogates the rise of new hubs and nodes in the global cultural industries through an in-depth examination of the Nigerian movie industry known as Nollywood. Informal and networked in nature, Nollywood is the second largest movie industry in the world in terms of titles produced per year, and the dominant popular movie producer of sub-Saharan Africa and the African diaspora. Through analysis of the rise, shape, governance, content, and global connections of this industry, this study investigates the shape of global cultural industry networks and the specific challenges and opportunities facing cultural industries growing in the global South, outside of the traditional core. The project is the result of extensive fieldwork done globally but mostly in Lagos, Nigeria, and involved 40 interviews with key actors and 22 observations.; The implications of the location of this industry are at the heart of this project: Nollywood is centered in Lagos, a rapidly growing African mega-city, and an exemplar of the non-spatially-bounded Fourth World, which is made up of that which exists in the gaps between connections to the dominant global order. From here, one can examine the ways in which cultural industry growth in the periphery differs substantially from such growth in the global North, where most research on creative industry development has been done. One can also examine implications of the global reach of this industry on debates regarding global flows of culture, as Nollywood movies, a product of the global South, are circulated globally through alternative informal networks.; The findings of this research suggest a view of global cultural industry networks as multi-polar, and rife with multi-directional flows, standing in the face of North-to-South conceptions of flows in global cultural industries. This research also suggests a new understanding of cultural industry growth in the periphery as being necessarily different from cultural industry growth in the global North. The growth of Nollywood, marked by informality and the strength of black and gray market networks, is an exemplar of the different shape of challenges and opportunities that confront creative industry growth in the urban global periphery.; As the globe is increasingly networked, and the Network Society increasingly becomes the organizing principle of people and industries globally, the emergence of networked informal cultural industries in the global periphery will likely increase, and informality, opacity, and unofficial alternative networks will become even more relevant. The future may be in the harnessing of networked creativity from emerging global hubs, and this project suggests the implications of this both in terms of new understandings of cultural industry growth, and in terms of new conceptualizations of the shape of cultural industry networks in the Network Society. ▼ This thesis investigates the politics of film distribution from a transnational perspective. Distribution, the most profitable sector of the film industry, is a rich site for cultural analysis. Distribution networks do more than deliver content to audiences; they shape film culture in their own image by regulating our access to cinema, creating demand for future production, and structuring our habits and tastes. The existing literature on film distribution focuses almost exclusively on multiplex, arthouse, and home video circuits. This thesis aims to broaden the scope of distribution research by taking into account informal, nontheatrical networks in grey and black economies. Providing evidence of the empirical significance of these “invisible” global markets, I offer a new model of media circulation (subcinema) which I develop through three case studies of film industries in Africa, the Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The broad argument is that analysing film from the vantage point of distribution can open up a space for a different kind of transnational film studies, one founded on a materialist model of how audiences access cinema. The first chapter of the thesis critically reviews existing scholarship on film distribution and draws on political economy, anthropology, film history, and media economics to develop a theory of distribution as a cultural technology. The second chapter examines the evolution of the Hollywood distribution model and the strategies used by the major studios to sell their product to domestic and international audiences, highlighting the bottlenecks that are characteristic of the conventional “windowing” system. In chapter three, I set out a broad theoretical framework for the study of informal film distribution, developed in dialogue with the social science literature on informal economies, and I identify the six key characteristics of subcinematic networks—instantaneity, deterritoriality, invisibility, textual instability, distraction, and “cockroach-capitalist” structure. The remaining chapters analyse three informal/semi-formal distribution systems from a comparative perspective. In chapter four, a case study of the straight-to-video release model used for low-budget American and Australian genre films explores the complex transnational economy in which these films are financed and circulated, and the challenge this fast-and-cheap film culture poses to theories of cultural value. In chapter five, the unique system of Nigerian video film distribution is analysed in terms of its efficiency as a circulatory network and as a driver of social and economic change. In chapter six, competing discourses around media piracy are interrogated through an analysis of black-market DVD trade at Tepito market in Mexico City, a case study which foregrounds the importance of pirate literacies. ▼ Clandestine African migration into the global North has been discussed extensively in the social sciences over the past two decades, but the representations of undocumented immigrant characters in literature and film have not yet received significant critical recognition. This dissertation is a response to the scarcity of scholarship on visual representations of contemporary clandestine migration movements out of West Africa. By analyzing cinematically recreated and visualized secret border crossings and clandestine lives in the Global North, I want to contribute to the current discourse on transit cinema to account for the filmic specificities used in recreating a cinema about a contemporary ?subaltern African diaspora.? My discussion includes films by European and African filmmakers, among them Abderrahmane Sissako, Mohammed Soudani, Stephen Frears, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Jean-Marie Te acuteno, Sola Osofisan, and others. This dissertation addresses tropes such as imaginations, waiting, hope, and invisibility that appear consistently in the films. In addition, I define and outline the cinematic subaltern laborscape, based on Arjun Appadurai's definition of global ?-scapes,? through comparing cinematic spaces and conditions in and under which undocumented African workers act and in which they negotiate their relationship with the workplace, fellow clandestine workers, and middlemen who can move between illegal and legal laborscapes. I thereby maintain that The creation of clandestine landscapes within the subaltern labor diaspora remains inextricably linked to the imagination of the migrant and its constant revision. Furthermore, I discuss the cinematic representation, on- and off-screen, of the migrants' countries of origin vis-a grave-vis the representation of the host nation states in the context of undocumented labor. The portrayal of the host nation state often quite obviously reflects on the filmmakers' background as well as the most prevalent national discourse on clandestine immigration in the film's country of production in that the productions reflect on societal anxieties regarding immigration. While many European filmmakers highlight issues of xenophobia and racism in their films, both in the narrative and aesthetically, transnational African filmmakers tend to focus more on the individual?s position within the host culture, especially as s/he relates to other immigrants from her/his home country. ▼ This dissertation analyzes how African immigrants from nations south of the Sahara become affective citizens of a universal Africa through the consumption of Nigerian cinema, known as Nollywood, in digital spaces. Employing a phenomenological approach to examine lived experience, this study explores: 1) how American media aids African pre-migrants in constructing the United States as a paradise rooted in the American Dream; 2) immigrants’ responses when the `imagined paradise’ does not match their American realities; 3) the ways Nigerian films articulate a distinctly African cultural experience that enables immigrants from various nations to identify with the stories reflected on screen; and, 4) how viewing Nollywood films in social media platforms creates a digital sub-diaspora that enables a reconnection with African culture when life in the United States causes intellectual and emotional dissonance. Using voices of members from the African immigrant communities currently living in the United States and analysis of their online media consumption, this study ultimately argues that the Nigerian film industry, a transnational cinema with consumers across the African diaspora, continuously creates a fantastical affective world that offers immigrants tools to connect with their African cultural values. Nollywood films culturally appose traditional values with both the delights and dilemmas of globalization to reveal a recognizable and relatable fictional realm for many Africans dealing with the vestiges of colonial rule. With hyper-dramatic plots that glorify and critique life on the continent, Nollywood becomes a means to an end for African immigrants residing in the often unfamiliar culture of the United States. Surfing YouTube for Nollywood films or logging into subscription based platforms like IrokoTV and Amazon Prime, which carries Nollywood titles thanks to partnerships with IrokoTV, can foil the incongruity between the paradise America is supposed to be, the realities of American life, and the immigrant’s desire to preserve an African cultural identity while striving for the American dream. Nollywood viewing online helps solidify the industry as a transnational movement where immigrants in the United States use technology to watch films, connect with their cultural values, and become a part of a global digital community, or sub-diaspora, consisting of other immigrants around the world and individuals on the African continent.
