▼ This thesis considers the relationship between television foreign correspondents and their locally-hired 'fixers' in order to ascertain the centrality and significance of this relationship in facilitating international news production. The design of this research project, with its emphasis on news production practice, was guided by scholars in the sociology of news tradition, such as Jeremy Tunstall, Michael Schudson, Stephen Reese, Pamela Shoemaker and Simon Cottle. The main research question asks to what extent, and how, is the relationship between the correspondent and the fixer important to newsgathering? Drawing on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu concerning the journalistic field and the acquisition of cultural capital, this research demonstrates how fixers possess vital stores of capital which foreign correspondents borrow in order to be successful in the field. This thesis explores in depth how the players work in tandem to overcome the difficulties posed by multi-skilling, parachuting, instant live reporting, and the 24-hour news cycle. Current newsgathering practice in Iraq is investigated as a case study, which reveals the difficulties of reporting from this dateline and reflects on how the level of danger has changed the nature of the correspondent-fixer relationship. Within this relationship, where a correspondent has the ultimate power to hire and fire, a fixer nonetheless brings significant influence to bear on story generation and story coverage. But does this influence bring into the Western news agenda stories that genuinely reflect localised, indigenous viewpoints? Or, in this globalised world, are fixers simply 'People Like Us' (PLU), who have absorbed Western news values and will reinforce them through the stories that they propose? In other words, are correspondents likely to gain an insight into localised communities and their problems that they might not otherwise have understood, or will they have their own views and presumptions reflected back at them? This thesis examines what the use of fixers reveals about the political economy of news and the changing context of international news production. It asks whether the growing importance of fixers in newsgathering reflects a move by media companies to eventually outsource international newsgathering to local employees. This thesis employs a qualitative methodological approach involving semi-structured interviews with foreign correspondents and fixers to explore their modus operandi and to investigate the building of overseas news teams.

▼ In the first decade of the 21st century Indonesian television underwent drastic transformations as part of the broader socio-political changes following the fall of the New Order regime of President Suharto in 1998. As part of the reforms, Indonesia implemented regional autonomy, devolving powers from the central to sub-provincial governments. The process has turned the country from one of the most centralised states in the world into one of the highly decentralised. In contrast to the authoritarian New Order era when the central state government implemented a uniform top down policy at all levels of government administration, post-New Order Indonesia has seen the rise of the local, characterised by greater regional control over political and economic affairs. This has led to new social, political and cultural dynamics at the sub-national level. As the nation searches for a new post-authoritarian identity by transforming its political systems into a democracy, television is inextricably embedded in the process. The dissertation investigates one important aspect of such transformations, namely the rise of TV lokal (local television). Since the turn of the millennium the Indonesian television landscape has transformed rapidly from a centralised system, consisting of predominately national broadcasters into a more decentralised television structure with hundreds of new stations operating at a local level, broadcasting for a limited service area. The study set out to explore the rise of TV lokal by investigating its first decade of development (2002-2012). It aims to identify local television’s specific role in the construction of locality in post-New Order Indonesia. What are the underlying factors that shape such a role, and in what forms and through which mechanisms does local television contribute to the process? The analysis focuses on institutional developments, emphasising the industrial dimension of television. It is based on fieldwork that was carried out in several locations, including Yogyakarta and Solo in Central Java, Denpasar in Bali and Manado in North Sulawesi. Four sample stations were used as case studies namely Bali TV, Jogja TV, TATV and Pacific TV. By combining both macro and micro analyses the dissertation identifies factors that underpinned local television development (Chapter 1 and 2), scrutinises its characteristics and modes of operations (Chapter 3-5) and investigates its specific roles in the socio-cultural transformations at the local level (Chapter 6 and 7). It employs a critical media industry approach to examine different aspects of local television industry, including both its extrinsic (public discourse in Chapter 1, regulations in Chapter 2) and intrinsic elements (ownership in chapter 3, economic practices in Chapter 4, programming and production practices in Chapter 5-7). ▼ The media play an important role of entertaining, educating and informing society (Herman and Chomsky, 1988:1). The education and information offered by the media consequently helps citizens to make informed decisions. However, a number of factors including media ownership have over time stifled the functions of the media limiting its ability to advance issues of public interest (Mcchesney, 2008:37; Nyarko, 2015: ii). This study therefore sought to investigate how media ownership has influenced news content in Ugandan television stations. The study compared two television stations (WBS and NTV) representing different ownership structures. WBS is an independently owned station while NTV is owned by a regional media conglomerate called Nation Media Group (NMG). A study on television was necessary given that the existing literature on media ownership in Uganda does not adequately address television. Most studies on this subject have focused on newspapers and radio stations. Yet, television is increasingly becoming a major source of information for many Ugandans. Quantitative content analysis and in-depth interviews were the main methods used in this investigation. Content analysis was used to examine news bulletins on the two stations to establish how the differences in ownership structures affected news content. In total, twenty news bulletins were examined. The in-depth interviews were employed to collect respondents‘ views on the influence of media ownership on editorial independence as well as the effect of external factors on news. The data from the interviews was also used to complement the results from quantitative content analysis. The study found out that media ownership influenced news content on the two television stations during the period under study. It however contradicted the view in the political economy of the media that media concentration diminishes the performance of television stations. The findings demonstrated that NTV (which is owned by a media concentration) had more diverse news bulletins than WBS which is independently owned. It was further discovered that NTV journalists exercised more editorial independence than their counterparts at WBS. However, it was observed that news content in all television stations in Uganda, regardless of the structure of ownership, was affected by political interference and advertisement. Esta dissertação investiga o efeito do sistema FTP (File Transfer Protocol ou Protocolo de Transferência de Arquivo) no processo de produção do telejornalismo das emissoras da Rede Amazônica (TV Amazonas, TV Rondônia, TV Acre, TV Roraima e TV Amapá), a partir da Central de Jornalismo sediada na capital do estado no Amazonas e seus efeitos no cotidiano da comunidade do município de Manacapuru, que passou a ser não apenas consumidora de informação, mas também produtora dela. Como referencial teórico embasa a reflexão nas abordagens de Castells (1999, 2001, 2003) com a teoria da sociedade em rede por meio do acesso à informação; Dizard (2000) com a teoria das velhas e novas mídias, analisadas, em uma escala tempo-espaço, ao contexto da região amazônica; e Milanesi (1978) com a reflexão acerca da influência do impacto das velhas e novas mídias em áreas periféricas, em relação à existência de uma área central. A pesquisa, um estudo de caso de caráter exploratório-descritivo, compreende a comunicação como resultado de um processo histórico que para atender as demandas da sociedade em constante transformação, produz em paralelo, por meio da ciência, novas tecnologias. As técnicas de investigação empregadas consistem em pesquisa documental com levantamento de dados quantitativos e qualitativos, pautadas no recurso de questionários, entrevistas semi-estruturadas, observação semi-estruturada e participante. Os dados inéditos levantados e sistematizados neste estudo tiveram por objetivo contribuir com o processo de produção do conhecimento científico acerca da realidade amazônica, na expectativa dos resultados virem a servir como referência para outras áreas e investigações.

This thesis is intended to look into the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) system on the News Broadcasting production from stations belonging to Rede Amazônica (TV Amazonas, TV Rondônia, TV Acre, TV Roraima and TV Amapá), at the Central de Jornalismo (journalism Center) located in the capital of the State of Amazonas and its effects on the routine of the community from the municipality of Manacapuru, which has become not only consumer of information, but also its protector. As a theoretical reference underlying Castells’ (1999, 2001, 2003) approaches, with the theory of network society through access to information; Dizard (2000) with the theory of old and new medias, analyzed on a time-space scale, in the context of the Amazon Region; and Milanesi (1978) with a reflection regarding the impact influence of old and new medias on peripheral areas, in regards to the existence of a central area. The research, an exploratory-descriptive case study, comprises communication as a result of a historical process which, in order to meet the society’s constantly changing demands, produces at the same time, through science, new technologies. ▼ Initially praised as independent voices in a region known for authoritarian control, the pan-Arab satellite news networks have been criticized for airing content that is overtly violent, and sensational. Guided by framing theory and media categorization based in press theory and political economy models, a quantitative content analysis was conducted on news programming from five networks – Al Jazeera, Al Jazeera English, Al Arabiya, Alhurra, and BBC Arabic – to determine if differences exist between the networks, and between 2 dimensions of a network taxonomy – western and liberal commercial – in how news selection, content, and sensational structural features are framed. The data from 6,595 shots and 438 stories reveal both similarities and differences in how the networks visually framed their daily newscasts and Arab Spring coverage. Differences were found in the nominal agenda diversity of stories aired between western networks emphasizing more sports, and liberal commercial networks emphasizing more teases. Alhurra presented more Amerocentric visuals than the other networks. The liberal commercial networks utilized more conflict visuals than western networks. In addition, the conflict visuals on liberal networks were more likely to depict explicit violence. The study also predicted differing applications of sensational production techniques among the networks. Use of sensational presentation features was found to be more likely on liberal networks. Al Arabiya utilized more sensational presentation features than the other networks. Visuals from Arab Spring coverage were also investigated. The western networks presented more non-violent visuals, while the liberal networks presented a more explicitly violent view of the uprisings. Al Jazeera English aired the most visuals containing conflict. Al Jazeera's coverage was the most explicitly violent. No difference was found in the application of the human interest frame between western and liberal networks. However, Alhurra invoked the political frame more than Al Jazeera and BBC Arabic. Finally, use of sensational production techniques in Arab Spring coverage mirrored routine news coverage. The liberal networks relied on more sensational presentation features.
