▼ Motivated by questions posed to the new media artist, concerning the difficulties with coming up with an innovative artistic style in interactive media performance, this dissertation takes as a departure point a self-created multimedia work for a dancer, 5.1 surround sound, and 3-channel HD interactive projection. The work uses a custom-built wireless gestural interface to translate kinetic energy from the performer, into real-time multichannel synthetic sound and real- time OpenGL graphics. Throughout my preliminary research I became very much aware of the importance of influence on not only creative endeavors in general, but also the influential nature of the ever-evolving technologies available. This paper attempts, firstly, to place the new work in the context of these available technologies, within a sociological context for the contemporary artist, and secondly, to analyze how personal artistic style and voice can be transposed through so many different converging elements, all the while, encompassing design, technological enhancements & spontaneous performance. The over-arching thesis was to observe the journey of self-discovery of creating the piece, to discover how it fits in with the history of interactive media and new media art today. In its entirety, the paper follows a dual purpose. Firstly, it attempts to formalize a perception of the self in this century, via the convergence of mind and body, through its relationship to software and hardware. Any deduced conclusions are then pitted against an analysis of the work itself. In conclusion, it is useful to re-evaluate the juxtaposition of disparate media paradigms, as reconciled by the human body, to create a new way of thinking about the marriage between the moving digital image and digital sound in the context of time - as instigated by the translation of kinetic movement. ▼ he present study assessed the “use of new media Internet as a source of foreign new information” by journalists in Oromia Mass Media Organization and to examined the opportunities and challenges in using the new media (Internet). Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were applied. Questionnaires, focus group and individual in-depth, key informant interviews were the instruments used to collect data from journalists, who were the focus of the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS genres. The result of the study depicted that the majority of the journalists surveyed know how to operate a computer with some basic training skills and on trial and error basis, but almost all the journalists do not have in-depth training on how to browse information from the Internet. Except some of the journalists, majority of them have neither access to computer nor free access to the Internet in their respective media organizations, but they may have access to computer in six to eight groups. The finding showed that the journalists are far behind the information about events that are taking place worldwide as a result of lack of access to the Internet. Language barrier is also found to be another aspect that contributes to the low level of awareness of new media by journalists. But, it cannot be said that the majority of the journalists are not aware of the potential of new media Internet for media development in general. The problem of poor access to Internet is attributed mainly to the poor infrastructure of this media house. The basic reason is lack of financial resource. Lack of giving attention to new media sector is also one challenging factors. Finally, the research showed that there is a strong need to direct priority to the expansion of new media infrastructure in the media organizations and also building the capacity of journalists in order to cope up with globalization and information society. Because the utilization of the Internet potential was found to be scanty in the organization, confirming that the journalists in this study area do not easily access foreign news information source materials. ▼ This thesis explores national and international news reporting of a major controversial news story – the sinking of South Korean corvette, Cheonan in March 2010. The thesis draws upon a comparative analysis of major news coverage pertaining to the incident with a sample of US/UK and South Korean media (AP, CNN, The New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, Yonhap,The Hankyoreh Shinmun, The DongA Ilbo). In addition 18 semi-structured interviews with foreign correspondents and Korean journalists were conducted in order to explore news gathering practices concerning the incident and to investigate factors that influence news production. There has been a growing debate that a paradigm shift in journalism theory is necessary in the post-Cold War era. This study examines how a new paradigm shift might be applicable in the case of North Korea. This study also addresses international news flow and explores the propaganda model by Herman and Chomsky (2002) in light of media influence in foreign policy. Specifically, this study attempts to investigate the applicability of some filters in the propaganda model in the context of the North and South Korea’s conflict coverage, concentrating on the use of news sources and the impact of new media on journalism practices. This is contextualised by addressing journalistic challenges of covering South and North Korean conflicts. Key findings are that the dominant news frames identified were conflict frames in international news media and human interest frame in national news respectively. The primary factor that influenced journalism practices at a national and an international level include a journalist’s ideology - one of the most significant factors in news framing. Moreover, a routinized journalism practice, and inaccessibility to North Korea that entailed limited news sources also influenced the ways in which news relating to the Cheonan incident was reported. Some filters of the propaganda model, which are routinized news sources relying on officials and ideological convergence such as anti-communism were operationalised in the case of the Cheonan. The international news agencies also played a pivotal role as primary definer and seemed to influence national and international mainstream media. Correspondents perceived that the Korean news media’s ideological cleavage hampered Korean social integration. On a global scale, South Korea’s security is under the influence of geopolitical power control with peripheral countries. Given the impact of newsmaking on society and policy making, this study highlights that investigative journalism practices based on gathering ‘facts’ and the personal ethics of journalists themselves are indispensable.

▼ Until two decades ago, pregnant bodies were absent from mainstream media types or presented primarily in a maternal context. Today, the pregnant body is ubiquitous across a broad spectrum of media forms, including Internet websites, print media and screen narratives. This thesis explores the meanings and ramifications of this recently visible ideal, examining how contemporary media treat pregnant embodiment. This project focuses on the themes, tropes and discourses which characterise representations of pregnancy across four traditional media formats (magazines, novels, television and film fiction features); its goal is to elucidate the “story” about the pregnant body that contemporary media presents to the New Zealand woman as a consumer of both local and global culture. To answer this question, I look at the treatment of pregnancy in a set of examples drawn from a range of media genres (or formats) that are available to a New Zealand woman in the first decade of the twenty-first century. These include: thirteen mainstream women’s magazines published in New Zealand (1970-2008) and the Australian lifestyle magazine, Cosmopolitan Pregnancy (2005-2008); three “mummy lit” novels by Sophie Kinsella, Emily Giffin and Adele Parks; the television films Gone Up North for a While (1972) and Piece of My Heart (2009) which both follow the experiences of a young unmarried mother in post-war New Zealand; and the New Zealand television series Outrageous Fortune (2005-2010) and the American film Juno (2007), which each follow the unwanted pregnancy of a teenage girl in the twenty-first century. Current feminist media scholarship suggests the significance of maternity and domesticity to representations of women, but largely (with a few notable exceptions) fails to consider the pregnant body as representative of these ideals. This thesis responds to this oversight by examining how the treatment of pregnancy in contemporary media establishes a set of ideas about the nature of women’s lives. It argues that stories of pregnant embodiment are part of a wider narrative about a woman’s life more generally, what iconic second wave feminist Betty Friedan termed a “life plan.” I conclude that representations of pregnant embodiment mobilise a number of conflicting discourses that variously support and contradict each other. Women’s magazines offer a homogeneous vision of a feminine life plan, while mummy lit novels and screen narratives both acknowledge and contest this ideal; at the same time, each media type posits pregnancy as a significant milestone in the current life plan. Yet, all share a common agenda: encouraging the feminine subject to engage in a narcissistic relationship with her own body/self as a “mark” of her femininity. ▼ My approach to poetics in this dissertation is motivated by Brazilian Concrete poetry and digital writing as models for alternative textualities that reconfigure, through their material dimension, what a poem is and how we read it. These writing models also invite us to think about the ways in which cognitive and physical processes generate meaning. With these insights in mind, this dissertation returns to a broad range of so-called experimental poetry, from Hispanic American vanguardista visual poetry and Brazilian Concrete poetics to present-day Latin American media writing. By emphasizing cross-national and cross-linguistic connections, I explore poetic intersections of verbal and non-verbal modes of signifying, from non-linear poetic texts to poetic images, objects, performances, events, and processes. These different poetic movements and styles are tied together through their foregrounding of materiality, which implies a meaningful engagement with the text's physical characteristics and with the particular medium in which texts are produced, stored, and circulated in both creative and receptive processes. I thus argue that the common ground of Latin American experimental poetry from the avant-gardes to the present is the emergence of a poetics of materiality that places multiplicity, productive tensions, and embodiment at the center of how we conceive of the text itself, the subject, time, and space, and posits meaning as actively generated through the convergence of matter, language, and sensation. The opening chapter examines the visual turn in the Latin American avant-gardes, particularly in the work of vanguardista poets Vicente Huidobro, Juan José Tablada, and Oliverio Girondo in Hispanic America and the Noigandres group of Concrete poets in Brazil. I examine these not as isolated and ultimately dismissible experimental movements, but as the starting point for a prolonged artistic engagement with the senses, the body, and materiality in Latin America. The following chapter explores how poetry migrates not only out of its traditional linear forms into different visual configurations, but off of the printed page altogether, creating the poem-objects of Augusto de Campos, Jorge Eielson, and Cecilia Vicuña, or the poem-processes and poem-events of Raúl Zurita, Octavio Paz, Wlademir Dias-Pino, Clemente Padín and Eduardo Antonio Vigo, thereby exposing and undermining some of the most deep-seated implications of print culture. Chapter three turns to processes of meaning that emphasize embodiment and multiplicity in time and space: the colorful, performance-based poems of Augusto de Campos' Poetamenos and the hand-drawn poems of Cecilia Vicuña and Ana Cristina César all return to the space of the book, but in non-traditional configurations. ▼ This thesis examines the ways digital photo-sharing platforms adopt, use and challenge the discourse of the material family album as a way of demonstrating the uses for new media within the private sphere. It analyses the digital photo-sharing platforms of Picasa and Shutterfly, platforms which often take contrasting approaches to negotiating the relationship between material and digital cultures. By examining these platforms in terms of the way they reference and use the discourse of the material family album, the ways they allow content to be used and accessed, and their relationship to commercial culture, this thesis explores how these platforms use the discourse to transform the way the family and the family album interact with one another, and with geography, time and commercial culture. It argues that the discourse of the material family album is translated by digital photo-sharing platforms in order to ensure the family participates in the digital sphere, drawing more of human communication into the online space where it can be mediatized, observed, and commodified. The thesis begins by defining the discourse of the material family album, drawing on the ways the family album is commonly described in academic literature. It identifies a common discourse in discussions of the family album which suggests a particular way of thinking about the album’s functions and practices. The second chapter explores the ways digital photo-sharing platforms adopt and translate this discourse, and give these social practices a visual, media form. These platforms draw the family into the digital sphere by abstracting these practices from the material world and rendering them visible in their interfaces. As a result of this, however, the practices become subject to an increasing degree of standardisation and control from outside the family. The third chapter addresses the issue of access to family albums in both the material and digital contexts. It argues that the benefits of using digital interfaces lie in how they enable a reinterpretation of the significance of geography and time to both the album and its viewers. The characteristics of new media therefore challenge how access to the album was granted and refused in the material world. The final chapter explores the relationship between the family album and commerce, and argues that the commodification of the family album and the practices involved in creating them are perhaps the strongest driving factor in the desire to connect the family with new media and the internet. When the discourse of the material family album is realised within digital photo-sharing platforms, the relationship between family albums and commodities is changed, meaning digital photo-sharing within the commercially owned platforms of Picasa and Shutterfly involve families and their leisure activities more and more strongly in the world of commerce. ▼ This dissertation is a study of the aims, interests and rationale underlying the endeavors of a distinct group of humanists who sought explicitly to guide the meanings, uses and developing customs and habits of new educational, informational and computing technologies in the 1950s and 1960s. In particular, this study examines and historicizes the emergence of a new cadre of humanists in this period—""socio‐technical humanists"" as I have labeled them, who advocated for a new kind of humanities made socially relevant and publically engaged via this hands‐on intervention with new media technologies. Ultimately, socio‐technical humanists laid the groundwork for humanists' contemporary engagement with digital formats. Yet, because histories of early humanities computing have been fixated on more recent eras—since the rise of personal computing and the Internet—socio‐technical humanists of the 1950s and 1960s have remained invisible to analysts and commentators on the “digital revolution” the “digital humanities,” and the “crisis of the humanities.” This dissertation seeks to recover that lost history. ❧ This study is based on an analysis of published scholarly discourse, conference proceedings, personal and organizational papers and reports from the U.S. Office of Education. It lies at the nexus of three separate scholarly literatures: 1) the history of academic humanities; 2) the history of early humanities computing; and 3) and new media studies. The history of the academic humanities, while a topic of great concern in recent years, has been singularly focused on humanists' efforts to incorporate new subject matter and materials into their research and curricula in the 1950s and 1960s and has thus completely missed the ways in which humanists struggled, in the same exact years, to integrate electronic technologies into the humanities enterprise. While histories of early humanities computing have examined the relationship between the humanities and technology in the post‐WWII era, they have missed altogether the degree to which the arrival of audio‐visual—television and the rapid rise of multimedia instructional systems in the 1960s—sat alongside computation in the minds of humanists as part of the same overall electronic threat to the printed page. Finally, while new media scholars have recently began to study how, in the past, new media have entered into established media ecosystems, they have failed to examine cases in which the custodians of an older media negotiate, openly, the terms by which an older media's associated habits of mind could or should be transplanted to the new media which they sought or were compelled to embrace. ❧ Beyond these much‐needed historiographical interventions, this dissertation offers a number of findings, each critical for a fuller understanding of the contemporary status and standing of the humanities today. ▼ Opinion analysis is an area of research which deals with the computational treatment of opinion statement and subjectivity in textual data. Opinion analysis has emerged over the past couple of decades as an active area of research, as it provides solutions to the issues raised by information overload. The problem of information overload has emerged with the advancements in communication technologies which gave rise to an exponential growth in user generated subjective data available online. Opinion analysis has a rich set of applications which are used to enable opportunities for organisations such as tracking user opinions about products, social issues in communities through to engagement in political participation etc. The opinion analysis area shows hyperactivity in recent years and research at different levels of granularity has, and is being undertaken. However it is observed that there are limitations in the state-of-the-art, especially as dealing with the level of granularities on their own does not solve current research issues. Therefore a novel sentence level opinion analysis approach utilising clause and phrase level analysis is proposed. This approach uses linguistic and syntactic analysis of sentences to understand the interdependence of words within sentences, and further uses rule based analysis for phrase level analysis to calculate the opinion at each hierarchical structure of a sentence. The proposed opinion analysis approach requires lexical and contextual resources for implementation. In the context of this Thesis the approach is further presented as part of an extended unifying framework for opinion analysis resulting in the design and construction of a novel corpus. The above contributions to the field (approach, framework and corpus) are evaluated within the Thesis and are found to make improvements on existing limitations in the field, particularly with regards to opinion analysis automation. Further work is required in integrating a mechanism for greater word sense disambiguation and in lexical resource development.

▼ The existing authorisation systems within the context of Web Services mainly apply two access control approaches – Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC). The RBAC approach links an authenticated Web Service Requester to its specific access control permission through roles, but RBAC is not flexible enough to cater for some cases where extra attribute information is needed in addition to the identity. By contrast, the ABAC approach has more flexibility, as it allows a Web Service Requester to submit necessary credentials containing extra attribute information that can fulfil the policies declared by a Web Service Provider, which aims to protect the sensitive resources/services. RBAC and ABAC can only help to establish a unilateral trust relationship between two Web Services to enable a Web Service Provider to make an access control decision. Unfortunately, the nature of Web Services presents a high probability that two Web Services may not know each other. Therefore, successful authorisation may fail, if the Web Service Requester does not trust the Web Service Provider. Trust Negotiation (TN) is also an access control approach, which can provide a bilateral trust relationship between two unknown entities, so it sometimes can enable authorisation success in situations where success is not possible through RBAC or ABAC approaches. However, interoperability issues will arise between authorisation systems within Web Services, where a bilateral trust-based authorisation solution is applied. In addition, a lack of a unified approach that can address the interoperability issues remains as a research problem. This research aims to explore possible factors causing the lack of interoperability first, and then to explore an approach that can address the interoperability issues. The main contributions of this research are an improved interoperability model illustrating interoperability issues at different layers of abstraction, and a novel interoperability-solution design along with an improved TN protocol as an example of utilising this design to provide interoperability between authorisation systems within Web Services.

▼ From jazz clubs to cheese plates, the term curation has become a signifier of the growing need to organise and prioritise the seemingly endless possibilities of the digital sphere. The issue addressed here is in the associated meanings of the word curation and what it means to be a curator by examining the experience of the curatorial within a discrete context: the Irish curatorial landscape. The word curation comes from the Latin curare, to care for, and has long been associated with the professional duties of those selected as custodians for objects and knowledge deemed to be important to communities, nations, countries or even the world. However, as objects move from being purely physical to the digital, and knowledge changes from being transmitted through similarly physical media to digital formats that can be set free on the Web, what it means to curate has also changed. Curators are no longer necessarily identified as employed within museums or galleries; the word is now also applied to those who engage with and aid in the management and presentation of digital assets online. Curators have emerged in the online space much like their forerunners, bloggers or citizen journalists. We are now seeing the rise of citizen curators on the Web, which has not created these individually motivated curators, but has made their curatorial activities visible. Citizen journalists no longer need to have a printing press or publishing house to communicate with their audience; similarly, citizen curators do not need a private cabinet of curiosities or a job in a museum to allow them to curate or exhibit to an audience. The aims of this research are threefold: to examine the current terminology related to curation by those who identify as curators or engage in curation in Ireland; to define what it means to be a curator or a citizen curator within the Irish context; and to investigate the changing nature of exhibition spaces contained in the Irish context in light of the Web and digital spaces. The study will take the form of an autoethnography, exploiting my unique position within the museum and open knowledge community in Ireland to examine current understandings of curation and the phenomenon of the citizen curator. The focus will be on my work within Wikimedia Community Ireland (WCI), a branch of the Wikimedia Foundation which promotes the use of Wikipedia in Ireland in education, culture, and open knowledge. As an autoethnographer, I can act as an intermediary, part way between those working in cultural organisations and the public involved in knowledge building projects. The study will look at how those engaged in curation articulate the work they do by means of interviews and participant observation. These sources will allow for the development of a spectrum of curatorial practice. ▼ When Antonin Artaud (1896-1948 France) called for a new ‘theatre’ he was asking for a rigorous engagement with the work that would challenge both the artist and the audience. The thesis charters Artaud from birth to death, examining his 'struggle', which ultimately defines his 'theatre'. More specifically what is his theatre in the ritual form and the visceral form? Artaud’s life cannot be separated from the work itself and hence a division also emerges in relation to the intent of an artwork and if it can construct and also deconstruct the problem as apposed to an abstract realisation that moves away from the personal and the internal. The ritual form serves to experience via cognitive responses, signs symbols gesture and metaphor. It is also a space of the unknown the ‘black space’ and the liminal. The internal form, which is visceral, reacts by externalising the problem, forcing to the surface emotions such as grief, anger, despair, laughter, hysteria etc. However the question remains as to what kind of artwork can fulfill Artaud’s demands for his ‘theatre’ and is it realisable? By exploring the life and work of Artaud it became obvious that only certain types of works can echo Artaud’s demands for a theatre. The word ‘theatre’ takes on new meaning as its extended definition moves into eruption, embodiment and transformation. There are a number of threads that run through the thesis, which searches for enlightenment and deliverance on the one hand, retribution and chaos on the other. Alchemical prescriptions are enforced throughout the thesis, via life, death, urine, sputum, faeces and bile. Language and its ability to convey the internal is questioned in relation to Artaud, who devised various systems in order to deconstruct or tear off the veneer of society and art creating the ultimate sparagmos. The ritual space, which is a necessary vehicle for Artaud, gives ground in which to unravel through catharsis and in some cases abreaction. Drawing from his maxims, plague, cruelty and the double, which disrupt through the body, the thesis tests the intersection of Artaud’s unrealised ‘theatre’ and its relationship to New Media Art and the ‘self’.

▼ This thesis explores Victoria University of Wellington’s student newspaper, Salient, in the 1970s and 1980s. Salient covered a wide array of issues, performing its role as a campus newspaper while closely engaging with and informing students of wider political issues during a period of significant student protest. As a publication, it consistently and deliberately set itself apart from the mainstream media, a position which placed it alongside other alternative or radical publications. Furthermore, the thesis demonstrates that the connections between Salient and the Wellington Marxist-Leninist Organisation (MILO) were profound and enduring in the 1970s, with significant implications for the kinds of analysis and issues that Salient presented to its readers. While individual editors did have unique editorial policies, the nature of Salient’s journalism in the 1970s was notably socialist and activist in its outlook. In the 1980s, while Salient maintained a progressive political outlook, the direct association with MILO (by then the Workers’ Communist League) loosened. The paper’s political content still covered a range of contemporary social issues, and its editors took political stances, but its content was more akin to political commentary than an extension of political activism. The exception was Salient’s opposition to user pays tertiary education, which was seriously considered by David Lange’s Labour Government as part of its neoliberal reforms. As the possibility of a user-pays tertiary education system became more likely, Salient dedicated more space to covering, opposing, and organising action against this disruptive policy which had major implications for its student readership. Salient often did not speak for all students, but provided a platform for alternative analysis of social and political issues, pushing the boundaries of the purpose of student media and its place within the print landscape of New Zealand. A temática em causa neste trabalho diz respeito às mutações operadas no campo dos media, em geral, e na teoria do agendamento, em particular. A teoria do agenda-setting in lato sensu insere-se no estudo dos efeitos cumulativos e a longo-prazo, visando analisar o impacto das mensagens difundidas pelos meios de comunicação social no receptor e avaliando o grau de influência no domínio das suas cognições e conhecimentos. A capacidade de influência e de agendamento dos media tradicionais (imprensa, televisão e rádio) encontra-se actualmente condicionada. A agenda mediática tem conhecido ao longo dos últimos anos novos instrumentos de análise, não só no que respeita à emergência do jornalismo on-line, como mais recentemente, a blogosfera, meios que questionam o circuito mediático tradicional. A agenda dos media encontra-se agora também condicionada pela agenda dos novos media, ou melhor, daquilo que é falado nos novos media, dos quais fazem parte uma pequena elite, parca amostra populacional que tem determinado a cobertura de alguns assuntos. Se até há pouco tempo, a blogosfera constituía a caixa de ressonância dos assuntos explorados pelos diversos media, nos tempos mais recentes foi exactamente neste espaço virtual que as prioridades temáticas foram conhecidas e se transpuseram para os meios tradicionais. Constitui actualmente uma importante fonte de informação assim como questiona factos omissos ou subdesenvolvidos pelos media tradicionais.

The chosen theme of this thesis takes aim at studying the changes that took place in the media’s field, in general, and in the agenda-setting theory, in particular. This theory is introduced in the study of cumulative and long-term effects and it aims to scrutinize the impact that media’s messages cause in receivers, evaluating the degree of influence having in mind their cognition and knowledge. The power of traditional media (press, television and radio) in the agenda-setting and its ability to influence is currently conditioned. The mediatic agenda has known for the past years new instruments of analysis, not only in what concerns to the emerge of online journalism but also, more recently, in blogosphere. The media’s agenda is also conditioned by the new media’s agenda, or in other words, it depends of what is spoken in the new media. If not a long time ago, the blogosphere was a resonant box of all subjects explored by the different media, recently it was in this virtual space that the main themes were known and passed over to the traditional media. It is nowadays a very important source of information, as well as, it questions all facts that are omitted or underdeveloped in the traditional media.
