La gestion des incertitudes constitue un sujet particulièrement important pour le processus de développement des systèmes (DS) complexes. Il faut donc améliorer la flexibilité et la prédictibilité des processus de DS en proposant une méthodologie pour appréhender et maîtriser les incertitudes qu’ils comportent, ce qui passe par la modélisation. Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire se concentre sur deux questions indispensables dans ce but : (1) Comment gérer les incertitudes pendant le processus de DS ? (2) Comment représenter les incertitudes dans la modélisation de processus de DS ? Pour répondre à ces questions, la thèse propose une méthodologie incluant l’identification des incertitudes, l’analyse de leurs effets, leur réduction et/ou leur exploitation, et leur surveillance et leur contrôle ; elle définit également une démarche de modélisation des incertitudes avec le langage UML en proposant un méta-modèle des incertitudes et un nouveau profil UML "Uncertainty-of" qui permet de rendre ce méta-modèle opérable avec les outils UML. La validité de la méthodologie et du profil proposés a été testée par l’étude d’un cas industriel. Cette étude a montré que la définition d’une telle méthodologie était utile pour l’organisation de la gestion des incertitudes dans la conception et le développement de systèmes, et que la création d’un nouveau profil UML apportait une solution pertinente dans la représentation des incertitudes.

Uncertainty management is a particularly important issue for complex systems development (SD) processes. The overall objective to be attained in this context is to improve the flexibility and predictability of SD process by proposing a methodology to understand and master the uncertainties. We believe that modeling uncertainties is an indispensable step in this direction. For this purpose, the presented work in this thesis focuses on two critical issues : (1) How should we manage uncertainties in SD processes ? (2) How can we represent uncertainties in modeling such processes ? In order to answer to these questions, this thesis proposes a methodology including identification, analysis of impact, diminution and / or exploitation, and monitoring and control of uncertainties ; and it also defines an approach to modeling uncertainties with UML by proposing a meta-model of uncertainties and a new UML profile named "Uncertaintyof", which allows to make this meta-model operable with UML tools. The validity of our proposals was tested by an industrial case study, which showed that the definition of such a methodology is helpful to manage the uncertainties in systems design and development, and that the creation of a new UML profile provides a valid solution in the representation of uncertainties.

Computação móvel é uma tecnologia que permite que as pessoas obtenham serviços computacionais independente de sua localização física. A fim de facilitar a mobilidade do usuário, os dispositivos utilizados são pequenos, com o intuito de facilitar sua locomoção. Com isso, origina-se uma limitação na interação usuário-máquina, pois as interfaces de entrada e saída dos dispositivos ficam limitadas, devido à redução do tamanho dos mesmos. Assim, a interface gráfica com o usuário também fica limitada, pois as telas são pequenas, o que impede de explorar todos os recursos gráficos disponíveis. Encontram-se na literatura vários estudos referentes à usabilidade em sistemas que envolvem mobilidade. O presente trabalho apresenta o estudo da usabilidade no desenvolvimento de aplicações para dispositivos móveis e, a partir das limitações observadas, foi criado um perfil UML, a fim de facilitar a modelagem dentro da Computação Móvel. Após a criação do perfil, foi feita a aplicação das extensões através da modelagem de uma aplicação real.

Mobile Computing is a technology that that allows people to obtain services independent of their physical location. The devices are small enough to facilitate user mobility, but may cause serious limitations on human-computer interaction. Among the most serious limitations would be input (such as limited keyboard or touch screen, lack of mouse or stylus) and output (small screen, fewer display colors) resources. Therefore, there are plenty of studies about usability in development of mobile systems in the literature. This work presents a study on usability for the development of mobile systems and, because of the limitations observed, a UML profile was created to help the mobile application modeling. After the creation of the UML profile, application of theses extensions was done through modeling of a real application.

Years of research in conceptual modeling of spatial databases led to several models. Nonetheless there is no agreement on what is the best way to model the applications of geographic data, what brings some problems to this field development. The mechanism called Profile allows a structured and precise extension of UML and it is an excellent resource for modeling specific domains. This paper presents the GeoProfile, UML profile that was developed specifically for conceptual modeling of geographic data bases. An implementation of GeoProfile in a CASE tool was also performed. This showed thebenefits of using UML profiles, such as the ability to automatically check the scheme validity, making the model free of basic errors. It is hoped that this work is the first step towards standardization of this conceptual modeling field.

Anos de pesquisa no campo de modelagem conceitual de bancos de dados geográficos tiveram como resultado vários modelos. Entretanto, não existe um consenso sobre qual é a melhor forma de se modelar os dados das aplicações geográficas, o que traz alguns problemas para o desenvolvimento da área. O mecanismo denominado Perfil permite uma extensão estruturada e precisa da UML, sendo uma excelente solução para padronização da modelagem de domínios específicos por aproveitar toda a infra-estrutura que a UML possui. Este trabalho apresenta o GeoProfile, Perfil UML que foi desenvolvido especificamente para modelagem conceitual de bancos de dados geográficos. A implementação completa do GeoProfile em uma ferramenta CASE também foi realizada. Isso permitiu constatar as vantagens da utilização de Perfis UML como, por exemplo, a possibilidade de verificar automaticamente a validade do esquema, tornando a modelagem livre de erros básicos. Espera-se que este trabalho seja o primeiro passo para padronização da modelagem conceitual desse domínio.

Tipinė organizacija yra suskirstyta į padalinius, kuriuose dirba darbuotojai, kuriems priskirta viena ar kita pareigybė ir atlieka įvairius vaidmenis organizacijos projektuose. Analitinė modeliavimo kalbų ir įrankių apžvalga parodė, kad vieningo būdo specifikuoti organizacijos struktūrą nėra. Daugeliu atveju organizacijos struktūra modeliuojama neformaliomis diagramomis, kurias sudėtinga analizuoti ir atnaujinti. Darbe siūlomas nesudėtingas organizacijos struktūros meta modelis bei jo realizacija UML profiliu. Naudojantis MagicDraw UML įrankio funkcinėmis savybėmis – stereotipų adaptavimu, validavimo taisyklėmis bei ataskaitų generavimu – sukurta specializuota organizacijų struktūros modeliavimo aplinka. Praktinė sukurtos aplinkos vertė pademonstruota taikant ją konkrečios organizacijos UAB “Baltijos programinė įranga” struktūros modeliavimui.

The goal of this thesis is to create a specialized modeling environment for defining organization structures. A typical organization defines some organization units, has a number of employees that are assigned to a specific organization unit, play a specific role in an organization and may be involved in projects to play different roles. The research of modeling tools and languages shows that there is no single dominant approach to modeling organization structure, and in most cases it is modeled informally, which makes it difficult to analyze and maintain. This thesis proposes a simple meta-model covering the most important organization structure concepts and their mappings to UML profile. A specialized environment for modeling organization structures is created using MagicDraw UML tool features – stereotype customizations, validation rules, and report generation. For demonstrating the practical value of the created environment, modeling the structure of a real organization Baltijos programine iranga is presented.

▼ Pattern-based design, the use of design pattern during the design process, has become widely used in the object-oriented community because of the reuse benefits that take less cost and effort, but result in high quality in software development and maintenance. However, design pattern defects can be injected in early design without mandatory control of the evolution of a pattern-based design and assessment of pattern-based designs after changes. It is crucial to maintain correct designs during early design maintenance because defects in early design may cause serious damage to software systems in later software development and maintenance. Hence, there is a need of a systematic design method for preventing design pattern defects being injected during pattern-based design maintenance so that the change results of pattern-based designs conform to the corresponding design patterns. Conventional Unified Modeling Language (UML) 2.0 design methods do not provide systematic ways of assessing pattern-based design conformance. Pattern Instance Changes with UML Profiles (PICUP) design method is developed as an improved design method for perfective and corrective UML pattern-based design maintenance and assessment. Design pattern in UML Profiles (DPUP) is developed for formal specification of a design pattern. DPUPs are used for instantiation, maintenance, and assessment of UML pattern-based designs. DPUPs, as the main part of PICUP design method, provide metamodel-level UML design constraints using UML stereotype notations and metamodel-level Object Constraint Language (OCL) design constraints. In this research, assessments of pattern-based designs in UML class diagram with the corresponding DPUPs enforce maintainers to make correct changes of the designs. Pattern-related information is annotated in pattern-based design using stereotype notations. Furthermore, the conformance checking of a given UML pattern-based design can be automated by using the assessment tool. An explanatory two-case study is used to evaluate the effectiveness of PICUP design method with DPUPs, and applied to (1) the Lexi document editor and (2) the ARENA game information system. Questionnaire answers and design pattern defect counts from the two-case study conducted by subject matter experts support the hypothesis that the PICUP method is an improved design method ensuring structural conformance of UML pattern-based designs to the corresponding design patterns during perfective and corrective design maintenance for information systems.

This work presents the first comprehensive user-centred study which examines the software engineering tasks users undertake currently, the issues that 3D addresses and a measure of benefit of the 3D solution compared to traditional approaches. This thesis also presents a mechanism for creating 3D software visualisations, a refined evaluation methodology and visualisation heuristics that together provide a valuable resource for further research into this area. The research results have been structured so they are directly applicable to industry and as such are already undergoing industrial adoption. This has been achieved through the following: Firstly the research augments current and accepted software visualisation approaches by basing the visual notation on the Unified Modelling Language (UML). This has enabled the current visual software engineering tasks to be studied and for representative user tasks to be captured and quantified. The 3D visualisations then complement the current working practices by solving “real world” issues that are experienced using 2D visualisation approaches. These tasks are captured from both software development professionals and students working on software development projects. Secondly the research is based on open standards and open source software. Our implementations are compatible with the X3D (eXtensible 3D) ISO standard and allow visualisations to be created and shared across X3D viewers. Further to this, as a result of user needs uncovered by this study, a specialised 3D UML viewer has been created based on OpenSceneGraph. These visualisation techniques have been defined, created and tested to work on standard desktop computers and integrated with software engineering tools currently utilised by the software engineering tasks. Based on X3D, UML, actual tasks and data, with existing computers and tools, this thesis demonstrates that there is clear and measurable benefit in 3D UML software visualisation for industry. However, rather than explicitly stating simply that “3D for software visualisation is good”, outlined is a repeatable and structured approach to developing and evaluating 3D UML interfaces. The results demonstrate that through correct implementation positive aspects of 3D can be leveraged and negative aspects minimised. The main focus of this study has been in the area of 3D UML state machine diagrams, also known as statecharts. These have been investigated in two main areas. Firstly they have been evaluated as an extension to IBM Rational Rose Technical Developer, also known as RoseRT, and the use of this extension evaluated in industry. ▼ Por resolução do Governo português de Setembro de 2007 foi criado o Plano Tecnológico da Educação integrado na Estratégia de Lisboa e no Programa de Educação e Formação 2010, que definiram para a Europa um conjunto de linhas de orientação com vista à plena integração dos cidadãos europeus na sociedade do conhecimento. Com este estudo pretende-se analisar e avaliar até que ponto os professores portugueses e em particular os da disciplina de Matemática, estão neste momento enquadrados, e a que nível no sentido de serem integrados no referido Plano no âmbito de um “virar de página” histórico/tecnológico nos processos de ensino/aprendizagem, por via da implementação das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC) ou dos Produtos Multimédia (PM), aceitando conscientemente que nos encontramos num processo tecnológico imparável. Mais especificamente, procura-se também identificar o possível grau de integração no Plano Tecnológico da Educação nomeadamente em termos do Perfil de Competências dos professores e do estado tecnológico das escolas a que pertencem os professores participantes desta investigação. Esta investigação assume uma abordagem mista tendo sido utilizados como instrumentos de recolha de dados, um questionário, entrevistas, conversas informais e documentos orientadores de formação em particular de centros de formação. A amostra dos respondentes ao questionário envolveu quarenta e cindo escolas do 2º Ciclo, do 3º Ciclo, e Secundárias do concelho de Gondomar e de outros concelhos circundantes. Os formadores entrevistados que participaram no estudo são todos oriundos de centros de formação do chamado “Grande Porto”. Os resultados sugerem que há uma predisposição geral dos professores para uma adesão às novas tecnologias, desde que a implementação seja gradual, com uma dada sequência e com atenção especial às suas necessidades específicas. Revelam também o insuficiente número de acções de formação em que os professores participaram no âmbito das TIC e de molde a compatibilizá-los tecnicamente com as ambições do Plano Tecnológico, ou com o enquadramento e definições que o Ministério da Educação pretende criar ao definir os graus de competências em TIC que um professor deve possuir. Evidenciam também um número significativo de tomadas de iniciativa pessoais ou de escola no desenvolvimento de actividades ligadas às TIC. ▼ Debugging multi-agent systems, which are concurrent, distributed, and consist of complex components is difficult, yet crucial. The development of these complex systems is supported by agent-oriented software engineering methodologies which utilise agents as the central design metaphor. The systems that are developed are inherently complex since the components of these systems may interact in flexible and sophisticated ways and traditional debugging techniques are not appropriate. Despite this, very little effort has been applied to developing appropriate debugging tools and techniques. Debugging multi-agent systems without good debugging tools is highly impractical and without suitable debugging support developing and maintaining multi-agent systems will be more difficult than it need be. In this thesis we propose that the debugging process can be supported by following an agent-oriented design methodology, and then using the developed design artifacts in the debugging phase. We propose a domain independent debugging framework which comprises the developed processes and components that are necessary in using design artifacts as debugging artifacts. Our approach is to take a non-formal design artifact, such as an AUML protocol design, and encode it in a machine interpretable manner such that the design can be used as a model of correct system behaviour. These models are used by a run-time debugging system to compare observed behaviour against specified behaviour. We provide details for transforming two design artifact types into equivalent debugging artifacts and show how these can be used to detect bugs. During a debugging episode in which a bug has been identified our debugging approach can provide detailed information about the possible reason for the bug occurring. To determine if this information was useful in helping to debug programs we undertook a thorough empirical study and identified that use of the debugging tool translated to an improvement in debugging performance. We conclude that the debugging techniques developed in this thesis provide effective debugging support for multi-agent systems and by having an extensible framework new design artifacts can be explored and as translations are developed they can be added to the debugging system.

The goal of the current work – creation of complete transformation algorithms from object models to relational databases and their implementation in UML CASE tools. OOP has enabled the creation of tools for object oriented software and databases. One of the main aims of such tools is to create the object model of software and also a database for storing information about these objects. Most tools of software engineering enable the creation of object oriented software model and its transformation into RDB model. Afterwards the program code is generated from the OOP model and the SQL script of the database is generated from the RDB model. The analysis of CASE tools indicates that class models are not completely transformed into relational database schemes, i.e. none of existing case tools performs full transformation. One of the solutions is to take complete transformation process from class model into realational database model. The analysis of prototypes of created algorithms revealed that it is possible to perform such a task. The final result is the improved CASE tool with complete transformations from objectmodels to relational database schemas.

▼ The primary objective of the research is to examine the attempt of new urbanism principles to promote a sense of community through its pedestrian-oriented design guidelines of neighborhoods. The following questions will be addressed to examine the subject. First, do residents of a new urbanism neighborhood have a higher level of sense of community than residents of a typical suburban neighborhood? Second, is there an evidential support that pedestrian-oriented design features of new urbanism enhance the sense of community in a neighborhood? Finally, do residents of a pedestrian-oriented design neighborhood have more out-of-door activities in their neighborhood than residents of a typical suburban neighborhood? To examine the relationship between neighborhood design and sense of community, a comparative study was conducted in four subdivision neighborhoods located in the Houston metropolis, Texas. The first two neighborhoods exhibit pedestrian-oriented design principles and features of new urbanism, although each to different degrees. The other two neighborhoods are typical suburban neighborhoods that are not specifically designed to accommodate pedestrians and usually have less public spaces. The methods of collecting data are self-administered questionnaires, systematic observations, and unstructured interviews of residents in the four neighborhoods. The research findings provide evidence that the residents in pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods have a higher level of supportive acts of neighboring (SAON) and neighborhood attachment & weak social ties (NA&WST) than those of typical suburban neighborhoods. The findings also provide partial support for the relationships between the design factor (pedestrian-oriented design) and two dimensions of sense of community investigated-SAON and NA&WST. Additionally, the findings strongly indicate that the social processes, measured through selected demographic and nonenvironmental design variables, have their own unique and vital role on the sense of community in the neighborhoods, and that physical design has no impact on the way the social processes work on the sense of community in the neighborhood. The roles of physical design and social process are independent from each other. Finally, the results partially support the hypothesis that residents of pedestrian-oriented design neighborhoods have a higher level of out-of-door activities than residents of typical suburban neighborhoods. Apžvelgėme populiariausius rinkoje egzistuojančius UML redaktorius ir jų stipriąsias puses. Aptarėme verslo šioje rinkoje galimybes. Antrojoje darbo dalyje apžvelgėme sukurtos sistemos funkcionalumą, architektūrinius sprendimus ir architektūros kokybinius kriterijus. Trečioje dalyje aprašomi kodo ir bibliotekų generavimo iš UML modelių galimybių tyrimai. Pateiktas siūlymas taikyti OCL išraiškas elementų savybių validavimui. Paskutinėje dalyje aprašomas sistemos, skirtos elementų savybių validavimo OCL apribojimų pagalba, realizacijos pagrindimas, pateikia. Taip pat pateikiamas eksperimentas, palyginantis sukompiliuotų ir sugeneruotų dinaminių klasių bibliotekų spartos charakteristikas.

This document describes the work that consists of four main parts. Analysis of UML and related modeling standards was performed in the first – analytical – part. UML editors that are popular in the present market and their advantages were reviewed. The possibilities of making business in this area were discussed. The functionality, architectural solutions and architecture quality criteria of the developed system were reviewed in the second part of the work. Researches of possibilities of code and library generating from UML models are described in the third part of the work. The proposal to apply OCL expressions for element property validation was offered. The substantiation of realization of the system for element property validation by OCL restrictions is described in the last part of the work. The experiment that compares characteristics of the compiled dynamic class libraries speed and the generated dynamic class libraries speed is presented.

The purpose of rainfall-runoff modelling, like all environmental modelling is to generate simulations that accurately mimic those encountered in the system being modelled. Once this is achieved, the model may then be used to study the catchment response under conditions that have not previously been observed, such as the determination of extreme flood levels. The complex behaviour of the processes involved in the generation of streamflow mean that to achieve a usable model, simplifications must be made. This inevitably leads to the introduction of model error into the simulations, as these simplifications cannot reproduce the level of response variation encountered in a natural system. As a consequence, a model that performs well at some times may be inappropriate at other times. The MultiModel approach is an alternative method of rainfall-runoff modelling that uses numerous alternative process descriptions to generate a suite of unique rainfall runoff models. These models are calibrated and applied to allow for simulation responses that incorporate not only parameter variability but model structure variability. It is shown that the application of the MultiModel method to four test catchments produced simulated confidence limits that are much more likely to contain flood peaks that are beyond the range encountered during the calibration process than using a single model. This is due to the wider confidence limits generated as a result of the greater structure variability available to the MultiModel. The wider confidence limits are therefore a better reflection of our true understanding of the system being modelled. The prediction of ungauged basins presents an additional challenge to rainfallrunoff modelling. Most methods involve some form of regionalization of model parameters. These approaches are very limited in that they are restricted by model selection and application range. Two unique methods for the prediction of ungauged basins are presented that overcome these restrictions. The first attempts to condition a rainfall-runoff model using uncertain criteria, normally used as a supplement to more common calibration procedures. These criteria include estimates of flood peaks, baseflow, recession and saturated area. It is shown that combinations of these criteria provide a powerful means of constraining the parameter space and reducing the simulation uncertainty. The second approach to model conditioning for ungauged basins uses an alternative method of regionalization that focuses on the estimation of flow characteristics rather than model parameter values. Strong relationships between flow characteristics (such as runoff coefficients, flow duration curves and coefficient of variation) and catchment conditions (such as area, mean annual rainfall and evaporation) are identified for catchments across Australia. [Truncated abstract] Excessive and uncontrollable worry is a cardinal feature of Generalised Anxiety Disorder. The mechanisms by which non-pathological worry escalates into the pathological worry characteristic of GAD are described by two influential models: the metacognitive model and the intolerance of uncertainty model. The aims of this thesis were to explore the development of GAD and GAD-type symptoms and to examine the degree to which these models provide accurate accounts of the development of GAD. The first two studies investigated the extent to which the variables of each of these models were associated with GAD-type symptoms at a single point in time. Analyses revealed that the central variables of each model (negative beliefs about worry and intolerance of uncertainty) were good predictors of GAD-type symptoms. Limitations concerning the peripheral variables of the models (ie. cognitive avoidance, positive beliefs about worry, and behaviour) were also identified. In the third and fourth studies the central variables of the intolerance of uncertainty model (intolerance of uncertainty) and the metacognitive model (beliefs about the negative consequences of worrying) were experimentally manipulated and their effect on GAD-type symptoms observed. Results were generally as predicted, although were tempered by the difficulties inherent in inducing GAD-type symptoms in an experimental context. In the fifth study, changes in GAD-type symptoms over time were assessed using a longitudinal design. Both negative beliefs about worry and intolerance of uncertainty were significant predictors of change in GAD-type symptoms, but analyses indicated that their contributions were not independent of each other. It was concluded that a common vulnerability factor may underlie both variables, and should be the focus of future research..

A Síndrome de Prader Willi (SPW) é uma doença genética de origem paterna causada pela perda de expressão de genes no cromossomo 15. Alguns sintomas patognomônicos da doença são a hiperfagia e a obesidade que, na maioria dos casos, ocorre antes dos seis anos e compromete severamente a qualidade vida desses pacientes. O presente estudo se concentrou na área comportamental e teve como objetivos: - identificar a freqüência diária de comportamentos alimentares e ingestão calórica de crianças com SPW; - identificar as variáveis de interação familiar que controlam os comportamentos alimentares e; - traçar um perfil comportamental e cognitivo dos sujeitos com SPW. A amostra foi composta por onze crianças com diagnóstico genético de SPW, na faixa etária de 7 a 16 anos e seus pais. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados foram: um questionário para o registro de hábitos alimentares da criança, uma entrevista para identificar variáveis ambientais controladoras dos comportamentos alimentares, a versão brasileira do Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6-18 (CBCL/6-18) de Achenbach e o Teste WISC-III (Escala de Inteligência Wechsler para crianças 3 edição). Os dados passaram por uma avaliação que incluiu um registro topográfico e análise funcional de comportamentos alimentares e de outros tipos de comportamentos desadaptativos das crianças e análise e comparação das distribuições de freqüências desses comportamentos em relação aos perfis cognitivo e comportamental dos sujeitos. O grupo foi caracterizado como obeso de acordo com o cálculo do IMC. Os principais resultados apontaram que 82% do total classificaram-se no teste WISC-III como débil mental, 100% da amostra pontuaram na faixa clínica em, pelo menos uma das escalas das síndromes, competências ou problemas do instrumento CBCL/6-18. Uma das classes comportamentais de alta freqüência foram as negociações para obter alimentos dos pais. Há um quadro comportamental configurado como patológico em termos de respostas de birra, manipulação, agressividade, quebrar regras e oposicionismo. A comorbidade psiquiátrica também foi identificada, inclusive associada a um consumo elevado de psicotrópicos.

Prader Willi syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the absence of the paternally derived PWS region of chromosome 15. Some patognomonics symptoms of this disorder are hyperphagia and obesity, which in most cases happens before the age of six and they severely harm the quality of life of such patients. The present study has focused on the behavioral area and aimed at identifying the daily frequency of eating habits and the caloric intake of children with PWS; identifying the variables of family interaction which control the eating behavior and tracing a cognitive and behavioral profile of the PWS patients.
