The main aim of this paper is to investigate the probabilistic model of extreme weight of snow according to Extreme Value distributions and to find out which Gumbel’s, Weibull’s, GEV’s, and Fréchet’s distribution the best fits for the data. The probabilities of weight of snow, posing a serious environmental hazard are estimated there. The extreme snow thickness data at Dūkštas region (1992-2009) were measured in cooperation with Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service and Dūkštas meteorological station; so the results of the modeling and analysis better suit for current conditions. The choice of this natural disaster was because of the high risk of accidents caused to such essential objects as Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant, Kruonis Pump Storage Power Plant, “Mažeikiai nafta" terminal, “Achema” group of buildings, etc. No matter the importance and significance of this natural phenomenon, much less attention is paid to them than to the other elements.

Pagrindinis šio darbo tikslas yra Dūkšto regione pasitaikančios ekstremalios sniego dangos tikimybinis vertinimas bei neapibrėžtumo ir jautrumo analizė. Vienas iš uždavinių yra ekstremaliems sniego svoriams pritaikyti Gumbelio, Veibulo, Apibenrintojo ekstremalių reikšmių ir Frečeto modelius ir atlikti modelių taikymo tyrimą. Dūkšto regionas pasirinktas dėl duomenų gausos ir analizės aktualumo, kuri yra susijusi su Ignalinos atominės elektrinės (IAE) ir būsimos Visagino atominės elektrinės (VAE) aikštelių rizikos vertinimu. Be IAE Lietuvoje yra nemažai didelio saugumo reikalaujančių statinių: Kauno hidroelektrinė, Kruonio hidroakumuliacinė elektrinė, „Mažeikių naftos“ terminalas, „Achemos“ pastatų grupė ir kt. Dėl to būtina atsižvelgti į gausios sniego dangos atsiradimo tikimybę. Bendradarbiaujant su Lietuvos Hidrometeorologijos Tarnyba (LHMT) ir Dūkšto meteorologijos stotimi (Dūkšto MS) buvo naudojami Dūkšto ekstremalios sniego dangos duomenys (1992-2009 m.), todėl modeliavimo ir analizės rezultatai kur kas geriau atitinka dabartines sąlygas.

▼ Uncertainties widely exist in physical, finance, and many other areas. Some uncertainties are determined by the nature of the research subject, such as random variable and stochastic process. However, in many problems uncertainty is a result of lack of knowledge and may not be modeled as random variables/processes because of the lack of probability information. This is often referred to as epistemic uncertainty, and the traditional probabilistic approaches cannot be readily employed. First two parts of this work study epistemic uncertainties in the forward problems. A method to compute upper and lower bounds for the quantity of interest of problems whose uncertain inputs are of epistemic type is presented. Relative entropy is an important measure to study the distance between multiple probabilities. Its properties have motivated many important existing inequalities for quantifying epistemic uncertainties. Based on these works, we extend the inequalities to a large family of functions, the integrable functions, which play an important role in engineering and research. To be more specific, we provide upper and lower bounds for the statistics such as statistical moments of the quantities of our interest under the existence of epistemic uncertainty. We present the theoretical derivation of the bounds, along with numerical examples to illustrate their computations. Based on derived analytical lower and upper bounds, a procedure to compute numerical bounds of when the underlying system is subject to epistemic uncertainty is discussed. In particular, we consider the case where the uncertain inputs to the system take the form of parameters, physical and/or hyperparameters, and with unknown probability distributions. Our goal is to compute the lower and upper bounds of the statistical moments of quantity-of-interest of the system response. We discuss exclusively the numerical algorithms for computing such bounds. More importantly, we established the properties of such numerical bounds and analyzed their accuracy compared to the analytical bounds. Neapibrėžtumo analizė techninių sistemų modeliavimo rezultatams yra ypač aktuali, kai modeliuojamas pavojingų sistemų darbas, saugą užtikrinančių sistemų funkcionavimas, nagrinėjami avarijų scenarijai ar kiti, su rizika susiję klausimai. Tokiais atvejais, ypatingai reaktorių saugos analizės srityje, yra labai svarbu, kad gauti modeliavimo rezultatais būtų robastiški. Šiame darbe yra atliekama Ignalinos AE tikimybinio saugos vertinimo modelio neapibrėžtumo ir jautrumo analizė. Neapibrėžtumo ir jautrumo analizė atlikta naudojantis skirtingais statistinio vertinimo metodais, taikant programų paketą SUSA. Gauti rezultatai palyginti su tikimybinio modeliavimo sistemos Risk Spectrum PSA tyrimo rezultatais. Palyginimas parodė, jog skirtingais metodais ir programiniais paketais parametrų reikšmingumas įvertintas vienodai. Statistinė neapibrėžtumo ir jautrumo analizė, taikant Monte Karlo modeliavimo metodą, leido nustatyti parametrus turėjusius didžiausią įtaką modelio rezultatui.

The uncertainty estimation is the part of full analysis for modelling of safety system functioning in case of the accident, for risk estimation and for making the risk-based decision. In this paper the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of Ignalina NPP probabilistic safety assessment model was performed using SUSA software package. The results were compared with the results, performed using software package Risk Spectrumm PSA. Statistical analysis of uncertainty and sensitivity allows to estimate the influence of parameters on the calculation results and find those modelling parameters that have the largest impact on the result. Conclusions about for importance of a parameters and sensitivity of the result are obtained using a linear approximation of the model under analysis.

▼ Nonlinear dispersive equations model nonlinear waves in a wide range of physical and mathematics contexts. They reinforce or dissipate effects of linear dispersion and nonlinear interactions, and thus, may be of a focusing or defocusing nature. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation or NLS is an example of such equations. It appears as a model in hydrodynamics, nonlinear optics, quantum condensates, heat pulses in solids and various other nonlinear instability phenomena. In mathematics, one of the interests is to look at the wave interaction: waves propagation with different speeds and/or different directions produces either small perturbations comparable with linear behavior, or creates solitary waves, or even leads to singular solutions. This dissertation studies the global behavior of finite energy solutions to the d-dimensional focusing NLS equation, i partial _t u+Delta u+ |u|^p-1u=0, with initial data u_0in H¹,; x in Rn; the nonlinearity power p and the dimension d are chosen so that the scaling index s=frac{d}{2}-frac{2}{p-1} is between 0 and 1, thus, the NLS is mass-supercritical (s>0) and energy-subcritical (s<1). For solutions with ME[u₀]<1 (ME[u₀] stands for an invariant and conserved quantity in terms of the mass and energy of u₀), a sharp threshold for scattering and blowup is given. Namely, if the renormalized gradient g_u of a solution u to NLS is initially less than 1, i.e., g_u(0)<1, then the solution exists globally in time and scatters in H¹ (approaches some linear Schr"odinger evolution as ttopminfty); if the renormalized gradient g_u(0)>1, then the solution exhibits a blowup behavior, that is, either a finite time blowup occurs, or there is a divergence of H¹ norm in infinite time. This work generalizes the results for the 3d cubic NLS obtained in a series of papers by Holmer-Roudenko and Duyckaerts-Holmer-Roudenko with the key ingredients, the concentration compactness and localized variance, developed in the context of the energy-critical NLS and Nonlinear Wave equations by Kenig and Merle. One of the difficulties is fractional powers of nonlinearities which are overcome by considering Besov-Strichartz estimates and various fractional differentiation rules.

▼ In recent years, the need for pattern recognition and data analysis has grown exponentially in various fields of scientific research. My research is centered around graph Laplacian based techniques for image processing and machine learning. Three papers pertaining to this theme will be presented in this thesis.The first work is an application of graph Laplacian regularization to the problem of convolutional sparse coding. The additional regularization improves the robustness of the sparse representation with respect to noise, and has empirically shown to improve the performance of denoising on several well-known images. Efficient algorithms for computing the eigen-decomposition of the graph Laplacian were also incorporated to the solver for fast implementations of the method.The second piece of work studies the convergence of the graph Allen-Cahn scheme. A technique inspired by the maximum principle for the heat equation is used to show stability of the convex-splitting numeric scheme. This coupled with techniques from convex optimization allows for a proof of convergence under an a-posteriori condition. The analysis is then generalized to handle spectral trunction, a common method to save computational cost, and also to the case of multi-class classification. In particular, the results for spectral trunction are drastically different from that of the original scheme in the worst case, but does not present itself in practical applications.The third piece of work combines two fields of research, uncertainty quantification, andsemi-supervised learning on graphs. The work presents a unified Bayesian framework thatincorporates most previous methods for graph-based semi-supervised learning. A Bayesianframework allows for the computation of uncertainty for certain quantities under the pos-terior distribution. We show via solid numerical evidence that for a few carefully designedquantities, the expectations computed under the posterior yields meaningful notions of un-certainty for the classification problem. Efficient numerical methods were also devised tomake possible the evaluation of these quantities for large scale graphs.

▼ Belief specification, as well as the identification of sources and statistical properties of uncertainty, is a crucial stage in stochastic model development. In much of the classical literature, one would begin by pinpointing a future event whose outcome would effectively determine the conclusion of some scenario. Next, one would hypothesize a particular distribution for the event's outcome. Answering theoretical and practical questions would then be a matter of careful argument and computation. In this thesis, we are concerned with the following two questions, especially in cases when they can be motivated by financial applications: What if one is unable to select a single distribution which most appropriately characterizes the likelihoods of future outcomes? What if one has made a choice, even the best conceivably available choice, but it is simply wrong? The financial mathematics community has investigated our first question since the seminal works of Avellaneda et al. and Lyons. Volatility is a key parameter when pricing certain instruments, and these papers examine what unfolds, if the volatility is not precisely known. In support of this line of research, others have investigated the transference of statistical properties from classical objects to their counterparts under this new scheme. Chapters 2 - 3 fall into the latter category. Intuitively, they primarily focus on features of large aggregations of future events where the corresponding distributions are uncertain. To the best of our knowledge, our second question has attracted less scholarly attention in the contexts of index tracking during a reconstitution, parimutuel wagering, and mini-flash crashes. Briefly, index funds aim to replicate a chosen market benchmark. Parimutuel wagering is a popular betting system used in finance, sports, lotteries, and prediction markets. Mini-flash crashes are violent, rapid spikes or crashes in the prices of securities. Chapters 4 - 6 can be viewed as suggesting that it is natural to make mistakes in these situations, whether by picking a seemingly reasonable (but imperfect) objective or relying upon a sophisticated (but faulty) model. These innocuous errors can have surprising and occasionally disastrous consequences. ▼ The graphical calculator is a phenomenon that is beginning to become a favourable mathematical learning and teaching tool in New Zealand secondary schools. Discussions about the use, role and the impact that this technology in secondary schools have, and will continue to be a topical issue for some time to come. Technology use in todays' mathematics classrooms is of particular interest due to current curriculum reforms. The graphical calculator is a fairly recent technological tool that can be added to the array of mathematical tools already at the disposal of both the teacher and the student. This study examines the use of the graphical calculator in classrooms to gauge whether it has the potential to assist in the learning of mathematical concepts and to see if students become more active learners when using graphical calculators. The graphical calculator can be used in the classroom, in as much the same way as an overhead projector or even a piece of chalk. It is a tool for illustrating a concept, opening up avenues for investigation and can enhance the learning that is going on. Secondary school mathematics today is much more than the acquisition of arithmetic and algebraic skills it encourages understanding. The graphical calculator can be considered a powerful, pocket computer and successful users require a higher level of understanding than that which is required for rote or skills based learning. The introduction of the graphical calculator into classrooms confronts existing mathematics' content and methodologies in the imparting of mathematical knowledge from the teacher to the students. With this in mind, teachers in New Zealand need to react and prepare for this impending change. This study looks at the impact the graphical calculator had on eight secondary schools, the mathematics teachers inside these schools, and the way in which the graphical calculator was used in their classrooms. The study also examined the implementation of the calculators and the effects that they had on teaching and the mathematical programme delivered to students in the classroom.

Analizuojant tokias sistemas ypatingai svarbią reikšmę turi laiko faktorius ir su juo susiję determinuoti fiziniai procesai bei stochastiniai įvykiai. Šio tiriamojo darbo tikslas yra sukurti tikimybinės dinamikos modeliavimo metodiką išplėtojant susijusias patikimumo analizės priemones bei jas pritaikyti realios sistemos tyrimui. Sprendžiant užsibrėžtus uždavinius, darbe buvo pritaikyta pažangi stimuliuojamos dinamikos teorija, kol kas neturinti plataus praktinių modelių pagrindimo. Pritaikyta imitacinio modeliavimo metodika suteikė galimybę atlikti visapusišką šilumnešio praradimo avarijos saugos analizę. Reikšmingiausi darbo rezultatai yra susiję su neapibrėžtų įvykių ir dinaminių sistemų saugos analize, siekiant padidinti jų patikimumą. Didžioji atlikto darbo taikymų dalis skirta techninėms dinaminėms sistemoms. Darbe išnagrinėti ir išplėtoti modeliavimo metodai, kurie yra tinkami tirti sistemų patikimumą, susijusį su uždelstais pavojingais įvykiais ar rizikingais operatorių sprendimais.

The current probabilistic safety analysis is not capable of estimating the reliability of the complex dynamic systems where the interactions occur between hardware, software and human actions. In the safety analysis of these systems the time factor is as much important as it joins an evolution of physical variables and stochastic events. In this master thesis the simulation and reliability analysis of the probabilistic dynamics are considered. The new approach of stimulus based probabilistic dynamics is used for the Monte Carlo simulations of the dynamic system. The developed methodology was applied for the safety analysis of the loss of the coolant accident in the nuclear reactor. Besides the assessment of the probability of system failure the scenario analysis was accomplished. The essential events were identified. The uncertainty and sensitivity analysis revealed that the failure probability had a wide range of the distribution due to the uncertainty of twelve simulation parameters. Four main parameters were identified as their uncertainty had the biggest correlation with the uncertainty of the system failure. For the complete reliability analysis the relations between the failure probability and the system characteristics were determined.

▼ This study examined the extent of inquiry and traditional classroom practices and attitudes during mathematics teaching and learning in two year 5 classrooms (8-9 years old). The cultures of the classrooms were examined in the light of recent research into the social, affective and task environments of students learning mathematics. The study was designed as an ethnographic case study, with the intention of providing a rich description of the classroom interactions and environment. Data collection was carried out during the 3rd and 4th terms of 1998, during which classroom observations were triangulated by focus group interviews, teacher interviews and questionnaires. The resulting data was analysed using the theoretical framework of Hiebert, Carpenter, Fennema, Fuson, Wearne, Murray, Olivier, & Human (1997) and related to recent theories of teaching and learning of mathematics. The results of the study indicate that the cultures of the two classrooms were partly conducive to linked, thoughtful and contextual mathematics as envisaged by the Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum document and encouraged by many recent researchers in mathematics education. On the other hand many of the student and teacher practices and attitudes were reminiscent of traditional classrooms. The most important concern of the students was to complete their work and to be seen to get their answers right. The interplay between the different paradigms resulted in a mixture of rote learning and understanding of mathematics. The students showed some ability to move between paradigms depending on the classroom environment established by the teacher, but usually pressed the teacher towards traditional practices. The power environment in the classroom and the way tasks were constructed and used by the teacher were of critical importance to the quality of mathematical outcomes experienced by the students. The study suggests that effective inquiry based teaching and learning is possible in the New Zealand context, especially where the teacher is able to link together a system of classroom practices that offer the students an alternative paradigm to traditional 'mathematics in school'. There needs to be a long-term campaign of information and professional development for both pre-service and in-service teachers, focussing on the potential and effectiveness of such linked systems of classroom practice.

▼ Some researchers have suggested that students in schools find mathematics classes boring, and that this attitude towards learning mathematics gets stronger as students grow older. Using reports of students and teachers, this study investigates how interest is used and developed in intermediate school mathematics classes. Five teachers and 101 Year 7 and 8 students from a single co-educational suburban state intermediate school participated in the study. One teacher and ten student focus group discussions to explore attitudes to and uses of interest in their mathematics classrooms were audio-taped. The results of these discussions were used to develop themes that formed the basis of separate student and staff questionnaires for all participants. Further data was obtained from a mathematics class journal kept by participants, and from individual interviews with all staff and seven randomly chosen students. The study showed that both teachers and students had similar ideas about what students found interesting, and revealed several aspects of classroom practices that heightened and/or developed interest in learning mathematics. The most notable of these were: using hands-on activities; teacher enthusiasm; group work and student progress. Mathematical content was rarely seen as interesting in itself, although probability, symmetry and transformations, geometry and problem solving were regarded as the most interesting sub-strands of the curriculum, while number, measurement and 'all of mathematics' garnered least support. Bookwork using textbooks or worksheets was usually considered boring, and activities such as external mathematics competitions and challenging or easy mathematics polarised student opinion. Interest has a complex and generally positive association with learning. Student reports suggest that two interest factors that have the potential to be used more effectively in mathematics lessons are teacher enthusiasm and group work. The catch phase of situational interest, the aspect of interest most frequently used, was rarely developed further. This study suggests that mathematics learning will benefit from further developing interest in mathematics classes by linking situational interest factors with mathematical content, student experiences and clarity about each student's progress. Teachers need professional development and resource support for this to happen.

The aim of this thesis is to understand how these models have developed with a view to an improved formulation. Nowadays, the structured model can be considered to be of great importance and use. Mathematicians have realised that in real biological and ecological situations, a model should be developed which is at least structured on age especially with higher order animals, for example human and possum populations, so in this thesis we pay much attention to these type of population models. We shall also be discussing the qualitative nature of the solutions to the model: such as the long-term behaviour, steady-age distribution and the stability of the solution in great details. In chapter 1, we begin with the historical background of the unstructured population in which the properties of individuals are ignored and only the total population is considered. The Malthusian and Verhulst model are set as examples. We then proceed in chapter 2 with the simplest McKendrick's age- structured population model. In chapter 3, we shall show how Laplace transform can be used to solved the problem. We have also chosen some arbitrary functions for either one or both the birth and/or death rate, so that we can make deductions from the assumption of these special cases. Chapter 4, discusses the long-term behaviour: steady age distribution (s.a.d.) and the stability of the solution being analysed. We then generalise the linear age- dependent population model in chapter 5 to a non-linear age-dependent model where the limiting effects (overcrowding and limitation of resources) has an effect, on the specific age class only. Chapter 6 discusses the more realistic non-linear model similar to that described in chapter 5 but here the limiting effects have an effect on the whole population. Finally, we realise that since these models need to be tested, we shall, in chapter 7 test our model with possum populations on data collected from the Orongorongo Valley in Wellington. And then make suggestions for future work in Chapter 8.
