▼ Positron emission tomography (
PET) is a medical imaging modality offering a powerful tool for brain research by mapping of in vivo neuropharmacological functions such as metabolism, enzyme activity, and neuroreceptor binding site density and occupancy.
Quantification in brain-
PET can be classified into: 1) accurate quantification of radiotracer distribution such that image values are proportional to the radiotracer concentration in tissue, and 2) accurate quantification of the pharmacological state of the system-of-interest. This thesis addresses both these aspects for functional neuroreceptor imaging studies of the living brain.
Traditional brain
PET studies have at least two primary limitations. First, they measure only a single neuropharmacological aspect in isolation, which is often insufficient for characterizing a neurological condition. Second, data acquisition is accompanied by the invasive arterial blood sampling for measuring the input function to the system-of-interest. The motivation for this thesis was to address both these limitations, which led to the development of quantitative methods for multiple neuropharmacological
PET studies performed without blood sampling. One such experimental design investigated was a dual-measurement intervention study where the system-of-interest is perturbed with the intent of changing the subject’s pharmacological status and system parameters are estimated both pre- and post-intervention. Second was a dual-tracer study where two radiotracers targeting two different neuropharmacological systems were injected closely in time in the same study.
A major challenge in analyzing multiple pharmacological
PET studies is the statistical noise-induced bias and variance in the parameter estimates. Methods developed in this thesis reduced almost all the bias (>90%) in the intervention studies with a corresponding improvement in precision. Parameter estimates for dual-tracer studies were obtained with inter-
subject regions-of-interest means within ±10% of those obtained from single-tracer scans without appreciable increase in variance.
The thesis also addresses inter-scanner
PET image variability, a major confound in multi-center studies used to investigate disease progression. Since various
PET centers have scanners with different hardware and software, systematic differences exist in multi-center data. This thesis develops a framework to reduce the inter-scanner
PET image variability before pooling multi-center data for analysis. The methods developed reduced variability in phantom scans from different sites by approximately 50%.

Pahvi sekajätteen joukossa on epäedullista, sillä oikein kierrätettynä pahvista saa hyvitteen. Sekajätteen tyhjentämisestä on omat kustannukset.
The purpose of the thesis was to clarify the amount of the plastic waste which is created from the grocery shops, the qualities of the plastic materials, recyclability of the plastics and to optimize the recycling of plastics from the shops to the recycling company. The recycling process was directed to a big, middle size and small grocery shops in the Pirkanmaa region in Finland.
In practical studies it was noticed that about 20 % of the total weight of the mixed waste in the Tarastenjärvi landfill site in Tampere was recyclable plastic material. In reality the share of plastics in the mixed waste is bigger because there is also much cardboard among mixed waste. The cardboard among mixed waste is disadvantageous because the company can get compensation from the cardboard recycled right. There are own costs from the emptying of mixed waste. Plastic materials were traditional mass consumption plastics (PE-LD, PE-HD, PP, PS, PS-E and PET). Polyethylene terephthalate is the material of soft drink bottles and it is nowadays considered as mass consumption plastic.
The annual savings can be calculated from the obtained results to the chain of stores when the mixed waste is converted to energy waste. The annual savings would be tens of thousands of euros. I suggest that the colored plastic will be collected to the refuse sacks like clear plastic and the sacks baled. This way the storage and transport of colored plastics can be made efficient.

▼ Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), stenting, and related techniques, are commonly used in the treatment of coronary artery disease. The main goal of these interventions is to restore blood flow in the coronary vasculature, yet the lack of quantitative real-time feedback presents real problems as the final procedure outcomes cannot be accurately determined during the intervention. Real-time quantitative blood flow
measurements during balloon PTCA stent deployment would significantly improve the quality of these procedures and potentially reduce the high costs of these types of interventions. Doppler techniques are commonly used to measure flow with most ultrasound transducers. However, with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) catheters, the flow direction inside a vessel is orthogonal to the transducer's image plane, making Doppler methods impractical. A slow-time filter-bank processing method was implemented in real-time
using an intravascular ultrasound transducer array to obtain flow velocity
measurements orthogonal to the image plane. The slow-time spectrum is estimated from the filtered energy under a series of narrow band pass filters centered at increasing frequencies applied to the slow-time signals. The normalized second moment of slow-time spectra is monotonically related to scatteter velocity. However, in the presence of in-plane flow this relationship changes. Slow-time spectra shift and spread with the in-plane and out-of-plane components, respectively. These two effects cause the normalized spectral second moment to increase, resulting in flow overestimates. Applying appropriate tilts to slow-time signals causes the slow-time spectrum to shift back to DC and the orthogonal estimation method can be used. Independent simulations show absolute flow rate estimation error smaller than 3.2% for plug flows of 30cm/sec and flow angles from 0° to 15°, making this method suitable for real-time validation of intravascular interventions.

▼ Positron Emission Tomography (
PET) is a diagnostic imaging tool that provides images of radioactive substances injected into the body to trace biological functions. The radioactive substance emits a positron which annihilates with an electron to produce two 511 keV photons traveling in approximately opposite directions to be coincidentally detected by two detectors. Many photons are absorbed or scattered, reducing the number of detected emission events. Attenuation correction is crucial for quantitatively accurate
PET reconstructions.
PET transmission scans are performed to estimate attenuation parameters which are in turn used to correct the emission scans for attenuation effects. The noise in estimating the attenuation parameters propagates to the emission images affecting their quality and quantitative correctness. Thus, attenuation image reconstruction is extremely important in
PET. Conventional methods of attenuation correction are suboptimal and ignore the Poisson nature of the data. We propose to use penalized likelihood Image reconstruction techniques for transmission scans. Current algorithms for transmission tomography have two important problems: (1) they are not guaranteed to converge, (2) if they converge, the convergence is slow. We develop new fast and monotonic optimization algorithms for penalized likelihood image reconstruction based on a novel paraboloidal surrogates principle. We present results showing the speed of the new optimization algorithms as compared to previous ones. We apply the algorithms to
PET data obtained from an anthropomorphic thorax phantom and real patient data. A transmission scan performed after the patient is injected is called a post-injection transmission scan. Post-injection transmission scans are desirable since the patient throughput is increased and motion artifacts are reduced as compared to pre-injection scans. However, there are emission counts contaminating the
measurements. We include emission contamination in the post-injection transmission measurement statistical model and obtain better images as compared to conventional subtraction based approaches. We also present a joint estimation technique to estimate attenuation and emission images simultaneously from transmission and emission scans. We analyze noise propagation from transmission scans to emission images for some sequential image reconstruction methods. The results show that transmission noise affects emission image quality heavily, especially when short transmission scans are utilized.

▼ In this thesis, a two-dimensional pixel-wise deconvolution method for partial volume correction (PVC) for combined Positron Emission Tomography and Computer Tomography (PET/CT) imaging has been developed. The method is based on Van Cittert's deconvolution algorithm and includes a noise reduction method based on adaptive smoothing and median filters. Furthermore, a technique to take into account the position dependent PET point spread function (PSF) and to reduce ringing artifacts is also described. The quantitative and qualitative performance of the proposed PVC algorithm was evaluated using phantom experiments with varying object size, background and noise level. PVC results in an increased activity recovery as well as image contrast enhancement. However, the quantitative performance of the algorithm is impaired by the presence of background activity and image noise. When applying the correction on clinical PET images, the result was an increase in standardized uptake values, up to 98% for small tumors in the lung. These results suggest that the PVC described in this work significantly improves activity recovery without producing excessive amount of ringing artifacts and noise amplification. The main limitations of the algorithm are the restriction to two dimensions and the lack of regularization constraints based on anatomical information from the co-registered CT images.

▼ Currently there exists a desire to pursue novel measurement, numerical, and analytical techniques for characterization of bistatic response of point and distributed targets. This thesis strives to incorporate aspects from each of these electromagnetic (EM) strategies and to apply these techniques to further the understanding of remote sensing of point and distributed targets through bistatic
measurements and theoretical scattering models. A planar near-field scanning system is proposed, built, and tested that performs bistatic scattering
measurements from both point and distributed targets with a high degree of accuracy. Also, numerical techniques are pursued for advancing the knowledge of EM scattering from rough surfaces
using computational electromagnetics by looking at the two major limiting factors of such analysis-time and memory requirements. Through the use of wavelet basis functions, it is found that the moment matrix of the Method of Moments can be made significantly sparse (up to 99% sparse) when a threshold is applied. Efficient sparse matrix solvers now can be used without sacrificing accuracy of the scattering pattern.
Using an Iterative Physical Optics approach allows significant time reduction in analysis for 1-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional random rough Perfectly Electrically Conducting (PEC) or impedance boundary surfaces with physical characteristics that have a root mean square (rms) slope less than 0.5. Finally, the performance of a parasitic GPS multi-static radar system is investigated. A feasibility study is conducted with the desire of applying such a system to the remote sensing of the earth without launching high cost satellites, but rather
using existing satellites already in orbit. The results of this feasibility study concluded that current GPS satellites do not transmit enough power to accurately measure incoherent bistatic scattering from the earth, but the next generation GPS satellites may be more applicable to this endeavor.

▼ Medical Imaging systems such as positron emission tomography (
PET) and electronically collimated single positron emission tomography (SPECT) record particle emission events based on timing coincidences. These systems record accidental coincidence (AC) events simultaneously with the true coincidence events. Similarly in low light-level imaging, thermoelectrons generated by photodetector are indistinguishable from photoelectrons generated by photo-conversion, and their effect is similar to the AC events. During
PET emission scans, accidental coincidence (AC) events occur when photons that originate from separate positron-electron annihilations are mistakenly recorded as having arisen from the same annihilation. In
PET, generally a significant portion of the collected data consists of AC events that are a primary source of background noise. Also, during
PET transmission scans, photons that originate from different transmission sources cause AC events. In
PET, the
measurements are usually precorrected for AC events by real-time subtraction of the delayed window coincidences. Randoms subtraction compensates in mean for accidental coincidences, but destroys the Poisson statistics. We develop statistical image reconstruction methods for randoms pre-corrected
PET measurements using penalized maximum likelihood (ML) estimation. We introduce two new approximations to the complicated exact log-likelihood of the precorrected
measurements: one based on a shifted Poisson model, and the other based on saddle-point approximations to the measurement probability mass function (pmf). We compare estimators based on the new models to the conventional data-weighted least squares (WLS) and conventional maximum likelihood (based on the ordinary Poisson (OP) model)
using experiments, simulations and analytic approximations. For transmission scans, we demonstrate that the proposed methods avoid the systematic bias of the WLS method, and lead to significantly lower variance than the conventional OP method. We also investigate the propagation of noise from the reconstructed attenuation maps into the emission images. Interestingly, the noise improvements in the emission images with the new methods are even greater than the improvements in the attenuation maps themselves. To corroborate the empirical studies, we develop analytical approximations to the reconstructed image covariance and we also develop analytical approximations for the propagation of noise from attenuation maps into the reconstructed emission images. The results of the analytic approximations are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental results supporting the improvements with the new methods. Similarly, for the emission reconstructions, we demonstrate that the proposed methods lead to significantly lower variance than the conventional OP method and also avoid systematic positive bias of the OP method. Although the SP model is shown to be slightly biased for emission scans with very low count rates, the…

▼ Aerodynamic
measurements were taken over models of the Boeing 777 high fidelity isolated landing gear in the 6- by 6-foot Virginia Tech Stability Wind Tunnel (VT-SWT) at a free-stream Mach number of 0.16. Noise control devices (NCD) were developed at Virginia Tech [9] to reduce noise by shielding gear components, reducing wake interactions and by streamlining the flow around certain landing gear components. Aerodynamic
measurements were performed to understand the flow over the landing gear and also changes in the flow between "Baseline" and "NCD" configurations (without and with Noise Control Devices respectively). Hot-film, Pitot-static
measurements and flow visualization
using tufts were performed over an isolated 26% scale-model high fidelity landing gear for the "Baseline" and "NCD" configurations. Contours of turbulence intensity, normalized wake velocity and normalized total pressure loss for both configurations are compared. The "Baseline" configuration was also compared with the NASA Ames study conducted by Horne et al [7]. Hot-film
measurements are also compared to Microphone Phased Array results which were acquired at Virginia Tech by Ravetta [8]. A novel technique for processing hot-film
measurements by breaking turbulence into octave bands as acoustic
measurements is presented.
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
measurements were taken at six different locations over the 13% scale-model landing gear with no door and at a truck angle of zero degrees. Results are compared to PIV
measurements taken over the wheels of a four-wheel landing gear by Lazos [10-12]. PIV results such as average velocity contours and vectors, streamlines and instantaneous velocity contours and vectors are presented. Results presented from PIV and flow visualization are in good agreement with results from Lazos [10-12].

▼ Dust in the atmosphere has a significant effect on earth’s climate by scattering or absorption of incoming solar radiation, acting as cloud condensation nuclei, or providing critical nutrients to oceans and terrestrial biospheres. Changes in the locations of dust source areas and pathways can provide insight into understanding the relationship between mineral dust, global climate, and biogeochemical cycles. To gain a better understanding of the impact of the dust cycle on global and regional climate, the dust records within ice-cores from three locations are utilized to reconstruct changes in atmospheric circulation and dust provenance
using radiogenic isotope data, trace and rare earth element composition, anion concentration, dust concentration, and size distribution. In this dissertation thesis, we applied this methodology to investigate three case studies. Ice-core samples from the Upper Fremont Glacier (UFG) in Wyoming, Taylor Dome, an East Antarctic ice-dome, and Taylor Glacier, the outlet glacier for Taylor Dome, are investigated here. In the UFG, we found that samples reveal anthropogenic influences. Variability in dust sources and pathways indicates a transition from far to near-range transport due to land-use changes associated with agricultural activity and livestock grazing expansion during 1700 – 1975 A.D. Samples from Taylor Dome and Taylor Glacier, spanning the time period 1,800 – 55,000 years before present, indicate a shift from long-range transported dust to a more variable local input during the transition out of the last glacial period when global temperatures rose 4-7 degrees C. Dust sources and transport pathway changes reveal atmospheric circulation restructuring following the last climatic transition and subsequent retreat of the Ross Ice Shelf.

▼ Polyethylene terephthalate (
PET) polymer has been the material of choice for packaging industry as a result of its excellent mechanical and physical properties. These properties are highly dependent on the microstructure, chemistry, and processing conditions of this material.
PET is often oriented in the machine direction (MD), the transverse direction (TD) or both MD and TD, depending upon the resultant properties required. The orientation process causes polymer chain alignment and hence changes the original crystallinity, thermal properties, and lattice structure. In this work, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were utilized to gain microstructure knowledge about the orientation of
PET.
PET is often copolymerized with different diacids or diols to produce desired film properties such as thermoforming, heat sealing, heat shrinking, solvent seaming, etc. In this work,
PET copolymerized with neopentyl glycol (NPG) was investigated. These films can shrink about 75% in TD on appropriate heat treatment. Their ability to solvent seam with tetrahydofuran (THF) solvent make them an excellent material for shrink-sleeve bottle-label applications. The solvent induced crystallization of these copolymer films was also studied at different exposure times varying from 0 min to 40 min. Tensile tests of seals made from solvent exposed film samples indicated that increased crystallinity in the film significantly decreases the solvent seaming ability. Hence, the hypothesis was proposed that amorphous material provides better surface for solvent adsorption, which results into stronger solvent seams and better printability.

▼ Automatic fire sprinkler systems greatly reduce fire losses and deaths. While sprinklers provide an estimated 75% reduction in death rate within residential structures, they are installed in less than 2% of new U.S. homes. A major impediment is sprinkler system cost, which can be reduced by optimization of the water flux distribution to the burning surfaces. If sprinkler drop size and velocity distributions are known, water flux distributions can be predicted. Existing measurement techniques, however, are incapable of large scale simultaneous measurement of droplet size and velocity, and cannot operate in fire environments. The Particle Tracking Velocimetry and Imaging (PTVI) technique was developed to provide large-scale, simultaneous, non-intrusive measurement of droplet size and velocity in two phase flows. The apparatus illuminates a 0.5 m by 0.5 m region of the spray field with two consecutive laser sheet pulses of different wavelengths. Dyes in the water fluoresce in two different colors, resulting in two differentiable color images for each drop, which are recorded by a camera. Drop velocity is determined from the distance traveled in the time between the pulses, and size from the areas of the droplet images. Droplet sizes from 200 mum to 3000 mum, and velocities from 1 m/s to 30 m/s have been measured with low uncertainty. While not studied here, the PTVI technique is general enough to measure many types of two-phase flows, such as those that occur in fire environments, engines, and manufacturing processes. Droplet sizes and velocities from axis-symmetrical sprinkler sprays were measured
using the PTVI technique. Water flux distributions on the floor under the sprinkler were calculated
using droplet trajectories, and agreed with measured water fluxes when entrainment could be neglected. Agreement also occurred when the droplets were assumed to start at the sprinkler and at the speed of the water exiting the sprinkler, suggesting that the sheet breakup region and mechanism can be ignored. Scaling parameters are suggested for droplet trajectory analysis. These developments simplify the prediction of water flux distribution and allow for the changing of sprinkler parameters to produce desired water distributions.

▼ Technological advances are exploiting the Earth's ionosphere for the purpose of communication and navigation spurring a need to understand the ionospheric irregularities which can have adverse effects on these signals. This dissertation studies equatorial spread F (ESF) irregularities
using two different measurement techniques, namely, space-based simultaneous, multi-point
measurements and ground-based Fabry-Perot Interferometric (FPI) and scintillation
measurements. The TSS-1R mission (1996) provided a novel technique for probing the ionosphere
using multiple space tethered sensors to simultaneously sample the ionosphere in the horizontal and vertical scales. Studies
using data from this mission indicate that ESF irregularities can have very complex structures with sharp gradients and structuring over vertical scale lengths of the order of 10 km, at 300 km altitude. Large eastward tilt of 55° over this altitudinal scale was observed. Thus, the study has not only provided the first ever simultaneous, in situ, multi-point
measurements of ESF morphology, but has also demonstrated the feasibility and potential of
using space tethered sensors, flying in formation, to explore irregularities in a two dimensional space scale. Low-latitude, coordinated studies
using FPI neutral wind data and ionospheric scintillation
measurements from Chile between July – October, 1997, examined the extent of plasma-neutral coupling in the nighttime ionosphere. A correlation between zonal wind characteristics and the occurrence/intensity of spread F was observed. A modest dependence was seen between the meridional winds and spread F. A very high degree of coupling existed between the monthly-averaged zonal winds and irregularity drifts, especially after 2100 LT, suggesting that the F region polarization electric fields are well developed. This provided experimental confirmation of the role of the F region dynamo as the primary driver of the nighttime electrodynamics. Comparison of this study with data from two near-magnetic equatorial sites in Peru showed the existence of latitudinal coherence in plasma-neutral coupling. Thus, the localized winds can exert a strong control over the field-aligned irregularity drifts over at least 7°. The wind and scintillation drift velocities were seen to be higher in Peru, as expected. Simple modeling studies for the Chilean site have been performed for comparison with the experimental results.

▼ The oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in Photosystem II (PSII) is a metalcontaining group of proteins that catalyzes the oxidation of water to oxygen, a function that is indispensable to life itself. <display-math> <fd> 2H2O+4phot ons→O2+4H++4 e- </fd> </display-math> At the heart of the OEC is a cluster of four manganese atoms which, together with Ca
2+ and Cl
- cofactors, have been found to be the inorganic components essential for oxygen production. The objective of the work described in this thesis has been to characterize the structure of the inorganic cofactors responsible for oxygen evolution. The first part of the thesis describes research on elucidation of the functional role of the cofactor Cl
- in the process of water oxidation. Both XAS and EPR characterizations were performed to examine the effects of F
- inhibition on the OEC. In contrast with other reports in the literature, fluoride was found to cause a significant, but reversible, change in the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). This is interpreted as evidence for a change in the oxidation states of the Mn ions when fluoride was added. In agreement with previous reports, fluoride was found to inhibit oxygen evolution. However, careful examination of the kinetics of oxygen evolution showed that fluoride inhibition is turnover-dependent, with significantly greater inhibition after several turnovers. The fluoride concentration that gives half-maximal inhibition (10 mM) is the same as the fluoride concentration that gives half-maximal conversion between the multiline and the g = 4.1 forms of the S
2 EPR signal. The fluoride-induced XANES shift shows similar concentration dependence. Identical spectroscopic changes were observed in the presence or absence of the 17 and 23 kDa extrinsic polypeptides. However, the turnover dependence of fluoride inhibition was only observed in the presence of the extrinsic polypeptides. Variable-period x-ray standing wave (XSW) spectroscopy was used to investigate the relative placement of the inorganic cofactors within the PSII membrane. Oriented monolayer samples were prepared on Au coated mirrors
using a mild-etching protocol.
Using relatively short incubation times (<10 h), it was possible to obtain an average protein thickness of one monolayer, as determined by ellipsometry
measurements. A Peltier-cooled sample stage was designed and constructed to permit XSW
measurements at < 0°C.
Using this stage, radiation induced sample decomposition could be prevented, as determined by monolayer XANES
measurements. Preliminary XSW results indicate that the Mn cluster is located at approximately 27A from the lumenal side of the polypeptide complex.

The master’s thesis present the rewiew of
design manufacture method. Mechanical part design plays an
important role whether company will succeed in market or will fail.
From my point of view there are three main measures of the DFM
(Design For Manufacture) process: cost, quality and time, which are
pivotal in design process. Regardless of the product being designed
– whether it is an entire system or some small subpart of a larger
product - the customer and management always want it cheaper,
better and faster. In this project has described a systematic
approach for calling designers attention to those features of
injection molding that tend to increase the tooling cost to
manufacture parts – and for estimating the relative costs of
tooling. The system employs a six – digit coding system for
determining total relative tooling cost, which groups parts
according to their similarity in tool construction difficulty. The
system highlight those features that significantly increase cost so
that designers can minimize difficult – to – produce
features.

▼ Abstract Recent, high-profile outbreaks of Salmonellosis infections and recalls associated with pet food and treats are indicative of an industry facing daunting challenges. Consumer demands are driving the pet food industry to formulate pet food products aimed at health and wellness that may sacrifice pet food safety, while the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements are putting increasing pressure on pet food manufacturers to employ comprehensive preventive measures to protect consumer and pet health. Thus, it is important to identify the next steps needed to improve collaboration among industry and regulators and the overall safety of the pet food supply chain. This study sought to identify the factors that contributed to the increase in pet food recalls between 2007-2019, providing a complete picture of the current challenges facing the pet food industry. This analysis should promote mutual understanding among the pet food industry, provide guidance for pet food manufacturers and regulatory oversight, and present data driven pet food safety information to consumers. The objectives of this study were as follows: 1) analyze trends, patterns, and the level of supply chain complexity in published pet food product recalls from 2007-2019, 2) identify the impact that regulatory oversight and zero tolerance guideline for Salmonella spp. has on pet food recalls, 3) provide recommendations and implications to industry and regulators for reducing pet food recalls while still protecting human and pet health. Pet food recall data were obtained from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “Recalls, Market Withdrawals, and Safety Alerts,” FDA “Enforcement Reports, and the FDA press releases. A thorough search of FDA recall data identified the occurrence of health hazards in different types of pet food, quantity of pet food product recalled, product description, and notification entity involved in each pet food recall. A methodology was created in order to take into account the multiple different scenarios that were observed in the recall process. Results show that supply chain complexity, level of regulatory oversight, magnitude of each recall based on the quantity of product recalled and market sales, and the interrelationships among notification entity, health hazard, and type of pet food are driving forces behind the overall increase in pet food recalls. Recommendations include developing and standardizing testing methods and procedures, requiring transparency into ingredient sourcing and quality to minimize large pet food recalls, utilizing advanced technologies to make the pet food supply chain safer, and having a robust environmental sanitation program. These findings allow the pet food industry and regulators to work together to make the pet food supply chain safer and reduce the total number of pet food recalls across all pet food sectors.

▼ In Chapter 1, I explore some of the central theories in the field of animal ethics, those by: Peter Singer, Tom Regan, Martha Nussbaum, and Clare Palmer. I also examine the views of Stephen Budiansky and Gary Francione in conversation with one another to consider the wrongfulness of domestication. In Chapter 2, I provide a brief historical account of
pet-keeping. I then look at our current practices of keeping pets and in what ways these practices are or can be harmful. Finally, I argue that there are more subtle ways that we indirectly harm our pets, that is, through 'othering attitudes' (of polarization, homogenization, backgrounding, assimilation, and instrumentalism). These attitudes can invite harm to our pets, particularly in light of their social needs. In Chapter 3, I consider seven animal-computer interactions (ACI) and see in what ways our pets can benefit from or be harmed by them. I argue that these technologies reinforce, rather than eliminate, attitudes of othering and can, in this way, be harmful. Still, with moderation, a loving eye, and a spirit of "critical anthropomorphism," we can use ACI responsibly.

▼ The
pet food industry has been fast-growing over the
past decades, which makes the
pet food market very competitive.
Understanding
pet food consumers plays an important role in this
competition to investigate purchase decisions. There are two
aspects of
pet food consumers, which includes pets that consume
products, and
pet owners who buy products. This research focused on
two factors, palatability and emotion, that may affect purchase
decisions from the perspectives of
pet and
pet owner. The objective
of the first study was to investigate dog preference for various
meats
using the preference ranking test. Twelve beagle dogs
performed the preference ranking procedure to rank five different
meats: beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and turkey. Dog preference for
cooked and raw meats were both tested during the study. In
addition, a descriptive analysis of cooked meat aroma
characteristics was conducted with four highly trained panelists to
profile the meats. The results showed that dog preference for
cooked and raw meats was similar, in which beef was preferred over
chicken and pork. Specific cooked meat aroma characteristics such
as meaty overall and brown/roasted might be intrinsic drivers of
liking in dogs. The goals of the second study were to generate
emotion terminology from both pets and
pet owners and to
investigate body languages and signs perceived by
pet owners
related to
pet emotion. Four focus group sessions were conducted to
gather insights from
pet owners according to emotions they and
their pets experienced. Lists of 38 and 55 emotion terms were
generated for dogs and cats, respectively. In addition, lists of 33
and 62 emotion terms were created for dog owners and cat owners,
respectively. Examples of emotion terms generated for pets and
pet
owners included excited, happy, anxious, and fearful. The
validation of these emotion terms was conducted in the third study.
The objective of the third study was to understand consumer (dog
and dog owner) acceptance of granola-bar-like dog treats made with
various sources of crisp and binder. Fifteen different kinds of
treats were baked with three sources of crisp (rice crisp, white
sorghum crisp, and red sorghum crisp) and five sources of binder
(corn syrup, spray dried plasma, gelatin, albumin, and egg white).
A home-use-test was conducted with 39 dog owners and their pets to
evaluate the treats for overall liking, dog’s liking, appearance,
aroma, and texture. In addition, emotion terms were probed during
the test. The results showed that there was no significant
difference for the owner’s overall liking and the dog’s liking
among the treats. Positive emotions such as content/satisfied and
happy were experienced frequently by the owners when dogs consumed
the treats. Conversely, dogs were reported excited, happy, and
eager when eating the treats. These studies demonstrated that a
combination of palatability test and sensory analysis provided
insights from both and
pet and
pet owners, which may be helpful for
the
pet food industry to understand the
pet food consumers…

▼ Effective and reliable communication plays a critical role in helping organization engaged in the area of
crisis and emergency reporting and responding. Addis Ababa Police Commission is an organization
working in the area of responding to crisis and emergency related incidents in Addis Ababa. When faced
with crises and emergency situations, for the purpose of reporting different type of incident, the general
public is limited to
using phone calls. Being limited to
using phone calls, the Police Commission is facing
different difficulties mainly in the credibility of the report, since phone calls are mostly anonymous false
and unreliable reports are being received. This affects the action taken to the incident in managing
available resource effectively. Therefore there is a need to enhance the communication medium by
using
an additional means of reporting crises and emergency incidents.
The use of mobile technologies are so broadening that people are depending on this technology in their
day to day activities to effectively communicate and collaborate with each other whether handling their
personal or business activities. One of the features of mobile technologies that have come to be broadly
used is SMS (Short messaging Service) which enables the user to send and receive text messages
using
mobile phones. Different SMS based applications are currently being developed globally by different
organizations for different purposes in the business world, health, monitoring, supply chain management
etc.
After conducting a survey on the current condition of crises and emergency reporting and responding at
Addis Ababa Police Commission, and identifying the available current technologies, we have developed a
system called MobiRep that can alleviate the problems that is more efficient and economical.
MobiRep is a system engaged in accepting reports from any mobile phones
using the SMS. In addition to
accepting reports, the system can also send SMS or broadcast bulk SMS to a group or multiple devices
that can accept text messages. After accepting a report, the police can also use the broadcasting feature
of the system to take necessary action to an incident by dispatching resources. Additionally, the system
will also be able to send SMS alerts in warning subscribed users about a major incident or criminal
activities that occurred or may occur near their neighborhood. Generally the system to be developed will
play a good role in being an additional means of accepting real-time reports and also help by filling the
communication gap in reporting and responding to a crisis, crime or an emergency.

In this research work the effects of the process and geometrical parameters on the characteristics of the internal two-phase flow inside eight Y-Jet atomizers were studied using an apparatus working with air and water. The results show that the flow rates are very dependent on the air supply pressure and the diameter ratio of the mixing duct and the air port. It was also verified that, in many operational conditions, these atomizers worked in the critical condition at the exit of the air port. Due to the strong irreversibilities present in the flow, the expansion from the air port to the mixing duct is closer to an isoenthalpic process than to an isoentropic process. For water mass flux greater than 6000 kg/m2.s, the pressure distribution…

▼ In this study, the optical properties of the human cornea was investigated. Two major developments were made because current measurement techniques need improvement First, the VU topographer, which uses a color coded pattern, was validated with real eye data showing better performance compare to commercial ring topographers particularly in reconstructing the non-rotation symmetric features of the anterior corneal surface. For example, ring topographers underestimate astigmatism of the anterior corneal surface by 4%. This underestimation increases with complexity of the surface. The astigmatism underestimation was found to be 13% for a post radially-keratotomized cornea. Second, the aberration contribution of the posterior surface was revealed using Scheimpflug photography. Results show that the contribution of the posterior surface to corneal coma aberration is negligible. On the other hand, on average the posterior surface decreases corneal astigmatism by 31%. Also the contribution of the posterior surface to the spherical aberration of the cornea increase with age reaching up to 15% at age 65. Thus, measurement of the posterior surface is necessary to specify corneal astigmatism and spherical aberration accurately. The methods introduced in this study are useful for applications in laser refractive surgery, contact lens fitting and studies on wave aberration of the eye because it reveals the optical properties of the cornea more accurately.

▼ Facing the challenge of improving adaptive interaction in educational technologies scientists and educators have turned their focal point in diverse areas ranging from educational, teaching and behavioural psychology to cognitive, affective and perceptual neuroscience. The introduction of digital technologies and interactive media tools in education has shown improved learning efficiency, much higher memory activation and assimilation than verbal teaching, notably due to enhancing motivation achieved by employing approaches attracting student’s attention. Excelling aspects of audio visual presentation proved highly valuable particularly in classes with multi ethnic groups of students, as for example consistency between definitions and objects which were verbally and visually defined, eliminating possible misconceptions caused by mishearing or misinterpretation by the learner. Taking it all one step further as to how an educational system could be even more efficient, a new element would be needed revealing a credible judgment of learning scores and effectiveness of the learning process instantaneously as for example inner levels of activation and satisfaction. In fact, this could be made possible using existing technologies if subconscious neurophysiological responses of a learner could be ascertained and inferred to psycho-somatic conditions as they occur. A system including bio-sensing, data analysis and processing in real time able to provide quantified markers of psychosomatic states of a learner would help enormously in next generations of educational practice. Incorporating data of student engagement and active involvement could help to deduce the interest of a learner, which is known to improve sensitisation in implicit, incidental and also in classical learning. Experimental settings used in previous studies attempting to incorporate physiological responses and interpretations into responsive educational settings have faced major obstacles. Operational issues caused by the requirements of the devices used for the acquisition of physiological signals such as electrodes and movement restrictions have reduced the progress of such settings to laboratory environments. In such settings as described above, the effects of wiring harnesses and sensory components produced an additional psychological burden on the participants. Consequently, the need to approach the physiological data acquisition from a new angle with seamless and unnoticeable operation is apparent. The challenge to design, develop and validate a system that being minimally obstructive and literally unnoticed by the user would uncover combined subconscious expressions of a learner was the primary objective of this research. Physiological data of Heart Rate and Skin Trans-Conductance (Electro-dermal Response) elected as vitally important and highly appropriate to produce the input of data required to evaluate a behavioural concept model. The behavioural assessment model entailed vector classifiers producing directional interpretations of measurements.…

▼ In the present dissertation, PET/CT (hybrid Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography) systems were modeled using appropriate software. These models are then used to optimize their operation. The optimization of the operation was not only focused on the determination of the technical parameters of the detector and the geometry of the PET system, but also extended to the clinical context, this being the ultimate goal of the thesis. These optimizations are aimed at improving the quantitative results of the functional imaging of radiopharmaceutical uptaking tumors or assuring their repeatability. The anatomy chosen is the thorax and the type of lesion is the Solitary Pulmonary Nodule (SPN). The selection was based on various features and properties such as its small size, as well as the fact that its relative position in the thorax may be related to its prognosis. This practically means that the PET camera is required to operate in such a way, so that the quantitative or semi-quantitative results it produces are reproducible. The first part of the thesis focuses on building the simulation model and listing the corresponding results with emphasis on possible optimization schemes. Our results show that properly tuned Monte Carlo simulations predict accurately the count rates of the detectors, representing all the respective phenomena starting from the initial gamma emission to the allocation of the counts on the respective Lines of Response (LOR) in the sinogrammed raw data. A maximum deviation of 2% when comparing simulations and experiments validates the model accuracy for further use in the clinical context. On this basis, in the second part of the dissertation we use experimentally validated simulations, and the performance of the measurements of four different scanner models of a model of true clinical patient data with detected SPN is represented using the parameter of NECR (Noise Equivalent Count Rate). The response of this parameter is investigated with regards to its activity, its relative location in the thorax and the degree of obesity of patients. Significant fluctuation of the quantitative results is observed when the same patient is scanned in different detector configurations of scanner models, or even in the case of the same detectors where however the scans are taken at different time points and the patient characteristics (weight) have changed in-between. Non-optimal patient positioning eccentric to the isocenter is observed frequently and can potentially contribute further to result variability. Our results provide evidence of the ability for properly tuned simulations to be incorporated into daily clinical practice and provide additional information on the variability of response of PET camera measurements, especially in types of lesions where often borderline decisions are made regarding their characterization. Future work is the exploration of the possibility to use the method prescribed here in an extended clinical trial (e.g. on a country level).

▼ Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disease of unknown cause. It can affect all organs although the lungs, eyes and skin are most frequently involved. The presence of active disease is currently based on several parameters such as symptoms, clinical findings, the serum markers angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R), chest radiography, pulmonary function tests (PFT) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). However, a gold standard for the assessment of active disease is unavailable. Therefore, the use of ¹⁸F-fluorodeoxyglucose (¹⁸F-FDG)
PET in the assessment of sarcoidosis activity was evaluated and compared with the aforementioned markers for active disease. The following conclusions may be drawn from the studies described in this thesis: Compared to 67Ga scintigraphy, ¹⁸F-FDG
PET is more sensitive in assessing sarcoidosis activity and demonstrates a higher inter observer agreement ¹⁸F-FDG
PET appears more sensitive than genotype corrected ACE and sIL-2R in determining the presence of active disease The degree of metabolic activity in the pulmonary tract imaged by ¹⁸F-FDG
PET and expressed as maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), correlates with the CD4+/CD8+ ratio and neutrophils in BAL In untreated patients, the absence of parenchymal activity imaged by ¹⁸F-FDG
PET correlates with stable pulmonary function tests after one year, while diffuse parenchymal activity predicts a decrease in diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) In patients with diffuse parenchymal activity imaged by ¹⁸F-FDG
PET, pulmonary function tests improve by
using immunosuppressive therapy, suggesting that ¹⁸F-FDG
PET presents the possible improvement that can be achieved In chronic sarcoidosis patients treated with infliximab, changes in ¹⁸F-FDG
PET correlate with the clinically observed response In chronic sarcoidosis patients, the change in SUVmax of the lung parenchyma correlates with the change in vital capacity (VC) attained by infliximab therapy An ¹⁸F-FDG
PET based classification system of sarcoidosis incorporating four major phenotypic presentations is reproducible.
