▼ The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the social cost motivations associated with paying for genetic therapies at the beginning of life for monogenic diseases from various perspectives including the social perspective and the perspective of an average member of the US population. The findings were generated by collecting direct medical cost data (in current USD) relevant to nine common monogenic diseases (Cystic Fibrosis, Sickle Cell Disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Hemophilia A, Huntington’s Disease, Polycystic Kidney Disease, Gaucher Disease, Hereditary Angioedema, and Pompe Disease) to conduct a Monte Carlo and Net Present Value analysis to generate robust lifetime cost distributions for each disease. One major finding of this research is that if an individual is known to have one of theses monogenic diseases then the direct social costs - the total cost of treatment when discounted down to a single value at year zero of life - based on direct medical costs using a 5% discount rate for a gene therapy which would bring about the removal of lifetime direct medical costs could be as high as 3,568,077 (SD 599,461) for Hemophilia A or as low as 30,467 (SD 21,164) for Huntington's syndrome. Other discount rates are also included in the models. Another major finding is that the direct social cost at year zero of life from the social perspective using a 5% discount rate for a gene therapy which would remove any risk of developing symptoms of, and therefore remove the direct medical costs for, all the diseases analyzed should be 496. Direct social cost should only increase as an individual's life continues, as explained within the thesis, so these cost figures represent very conservative estimates. It is shown that the direct social cost at the beginning of life for gene therapy, for individuals who are known to have monogenic disease, can be in the millions of dollars. It is also shown that direct social cost at the beginning of life for the removal of risk of monogenic disease in a member of the general US population should only be a few hundred dollars. These conclusions can be interpreted to show that there should be a high direct social benefit for such therapies when applied to the population of individuals who are at high risk of manifesting one of these monogenic diseases, but there should be relatively low direct social benefit for the removal of the risks of manifesting one of these diseases among the general US population. ▼ Making risky investment decisions well is an important part of farm business management. Risky investment decisions are those for which the rate of return on capital is not known when the decision to invest is made. To be complete, analysis of such decisions must include consideration of expected returns, risk and the dynamic element of time. This thesis contains such an analysis, in relation to decisions to invest in pasture improvement on farms in south west Victoria, Australia. The return and risk of these investments were estimated using stochastic simulation of a whole farm economic model. The real options approach was used to value the risk associated with these investments. This analysis revealed that pasture investments generate risk-adjusted returns which compare favourably to those generated by other readily-available investments, such as bank deposits or shares. The estimates of return and risk are static – they do not change over time. As such, this analysis generates no insight into the dynamic aspect of decisions to invest in pasture improvement, and cannot explain some elements of observed pasture investment decisions. To remedy this deficiency, the dynamic aspect was investigated by representing the ability of investors to reduce uncertainty over time in a Bayesian learning model. Learning alters the perceived distribution of values that can be taken by a variable of interest over time. As this occurs, the decision to invest in pasture improvement may also be revised. Performing this analysis revealed that a learning model is a suitable tool for representing the dynamic aspect of decisions to invest in pasture improvement, even when the data required to calibrate the model are relatively scarce. Furthermore, insights were obtained into the quantity and quality of data obtained at different stages throughout the learning process. These estimates indicate that, in this case, more information is obtained from a one-year on-farm trial than is obtained from three years of collecting information from off-farm sources. This study shows how a comprehensive analysis of risky farm investments can be performed, and hence represents a contribution to the discipline of farm management economics. Furthermore, information about the return, risk and dynamic aspects of decisions to invest in pasture improvement can help various groups and organisations make better decisions. In particular, the implications of this study are considered for farmers and their advisors, rural merchandise sellers, research and development organisations and policy-makers.

▼ The average age of American farmers has steadily increased for decades, with 63% over the age of 55 according to USDA-NASS. There has also been a trend of declining young and beginning farmers entering agriculture. Young farmers face increased financial requirements, more competition for land, and changes to lending regulations. Currently, there is limited research focusing on strategies for producers to profitably enter agriculture, specifically cow-calf production. The objective of this research was to analyze the net present value (NPV) associated with two start-up strategies for a small-scale cow-calf producer in Tennessee (one – starting with ten bred heifers and growing to 30 head; two – starting with 30 bred heifers and maintaining the 30 head herd size). Using data from University of Tennessee Cow-Calf Budgets and historical Tennessee cattle prices, the discounted free cash flow (FCF) method was followed to calculate expected NPV and modified internal rate of return (MIRR) for each start-up strategy. Monte Carlo simulations were run to estimate uncertainties around cattle price. Both strategies had NPV less than -118,000 and MIRR lower than -12% in the baseline models. Strategy one had larger negative FCF and smaller annual loan payment and compared to strategy two’s smaller negative FCF but larger annual loan repayment.Both strategies are highly (>95%) likely to have larger than -100,000 NPV. Off farm income needed to break even is very important for both strategies to remain viable throughout the ten year forecasted period. Strategy (to start small and grow the herd over time) has less risk exposure while achieving the least negative NPV and is the preferred start-up strategy determined in this study. These results should help beginning cow-calf producers and agricultural lenders better understand the financial costs and risks involved with starting a small cow-calf operation. Additionally, this study can be used to assist Extension educators to demonstrate the importance of off-farm income for small-scale beef producers in Tennessee. ▼ The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the impact the installation of an automated packaging system would have on the predominately manual bulk packaging work centers at Wixon Inc., a privately held, integrated food and beverage developer, manufacturer, and processor. The objective of this thesis is to determine if converting to an automated system would minimize costs and increase line speeds. The owners desire a 3-year payback on the investment. In addition to the financial and economical aspects of automating the equipment, there are potential food safety and personnel safety improvements that would be brought to the firm by changing equipment. The firm’s owners want to be proactive and minimize any impact a reduction in the labor pool might see cause from the exit of workers from the Baby Boomer generation. Methods used to determine the objectives of this thesis include a comparative time study of bag filling rates, an analysis of incremental cost savings, net present value (NPV) analysis and return on investment (ROI). Data were collected from studies conducted by the engineering consulting firm of Middough Incorporated, from Wixon Inc. accounting records and, interviews of key Wixon employees. The report provided by Middough determined that the new system would be able to replace three work centers in the Bulk Packaging department based on bag fill rates and flexibility in bag sizes. This reduces the employee cost per bag. The incremental costs were analyzed using accounting records for past history. Floor space, labor costs and other integral costs were compared to determine what costsavings there may be. Cost savings were treated as cash flow. The NPV and ROI for the project used this cash flow to determine if an investment in automation is a wise one. The conclusion based on the analysis made was that, based on NPV the investment would be profitable. However, the 3-year payback of $1.5 million would not be possible under current assumptions. The automation would reduce the number of needed employees enough to absorb any reduction in the labor pool while providing increased food and employee safety. Advisors/Committee Members: Allen M. ▼ Nationwide, the craft brew industry has enjoyed massive growth. Hops are an important ingredient in craft brew beer and rapid growth of this industry has created many opportunities to grow hops. Currently, hops production is concentrated in the Pacific Northwest. That is beginning to change with new hops acres being planted every year across the country. The study looks at how economically feasible it is to plant hops in Nebraska. Is there enough local demand? Finally, given that Nebraska’s weather is dramatically different than the Pacific Northwest, can hops flourish there? The research begins by assessing all costs associated with a starting a three acre hops operation. Estimated yield and income is projected for ten years to establish cash flow. Instances of hail, wind and tornados for Clay County Nebraska for the years 2006-2016 were calculated to determine a probability of those weather events occurring. The probability was then used to determine the effect it could have on yield of hops per year. In addition to cost of production, the study also documented the growth of Nebraska’s craft brew industry to establish demand for locally grown hops. The researched concluded that if production stayed constant and our discount rate at 5%, assuming prices remain where they are or higher, then it is economically feasible to grow hops in Nebraska. Wind, hail and tornadoes do pose a threat in the Midwest but their effect on yield is not enough to deter someone from planting hops there. Access to reliable capital to begin and sustain a hops operation appears to have a greater impact. In addition, Nebraska’s craft brew industry continues to expand rapidly suggesting a strong market for locally grown hops. This information is important for anyone who is considering planting a commercial hops yard. Given how expensive the start-up costs are and how labor intensive the crop is, this research can provide guidance to those seeking to add hops production to their new or existing farming operation. This master thesis has been performed in association with Blekinge Institute of Technology and in collaboration with the company Dynapac Compaction Equipment AB. The thesis aims to investigate how Discrete Event Simulation (DES) can be used for value and sustainability design concept assessments in early design stages. The research is made by investigating the example of simulating the lifecycle of a double drum asphalt compactor. The model is created in the computerbased DES software Simio LLC, where the captured data of the compactor´s lifecycle performances are linked to a Net Present Value (NPV) model and a sustainability assessment. The model is then further explored and evaluated in the Decision Arena, located at Blekinge Institute of Technology. The simulated model is created to approach a ‘lifelike’ lifecycle of the machine, containing the compactor´s ordinary usage in road construction. This includes operations in sidewalk, parking lot and pothole repair scenarios. The model contain service, maintenance, transport, workers, resource sharing and more. The model is connected to MS Excel to transfer data. The life cycle performances are captured in the model and used to estimate the cost parameters of energy -, water -, maintenance -, service - and transportation energy cost within the NPV model. The CO2 – emission for fuel consumption and transport, together with the total water consumption in the sustainability assessment. The outcome of the thesis showed that the method gave good results for developing new design configurations in the early phases in product development. The method could support designing towards sustainable and long-term solutions and collaborations over the sectors (i.e. between stakeholders, engineers, designers, non-experts and more). The outcome in the specific case resulted in successfulness of capturing all lifecycle performances of the machine and linking them to the mentioned parameters. The research question is, however, generic and the investigation for the specific case study uses assumptions and up- and down scaled data to protect the company secrecy. For future work, the method together with Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twin or Industry 4.0 could be in high interest to investigate further.

▼ Solar energy is a growing and largely untapped market for residential renewable energy. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems can have the potential to offer homeowners reduced electricity bills and a chance to lower their personal greenhouse gas emissions; however, there are several factors that impede PV adoption by homeowners. Capital costs, installation costs and incentives, local net metering rules, unknown resale value added to the home are some examples but another is aesthetics. Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) have the opportunity to address the aesthetic value by appearing to be a seamless part of a residential roof. However, it is unknown whether or not BIPV is economically competitive with the more conventional building applied photovoltaics (BAPV) or with a traditional shingle roof with grid supplied electricity for that matter. To address these economic questions, research was performed by using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) System Advisor Model (SAM) software to simulate BAPV (applied) and BIPV (integrated) solar roofing to generate two economic indicators, namely net present value (NPV) and levelized cost of energy (LCOE). These economic indicators were compared for the applied (BAPV) and integrated (BIPV) roofing PV systems to a traditional shingle roof. This analysis was done for BAPV and the BIPV system across the seven climate regions in the continental United States represented by seven cities for three system sizes along with three inverter types for BAPV and for one inverter type for BIPV. BAPV systems were economically favorable by both NPV and LCOE over a traditional shingle roof in cities where there was both strong net metering policy and incentives. Cities where both of these conditions were not met had at least one economic indicator that suggested a BAPV system did not make economic sense. Inverter type and system size did not significantly change the result. No BIPV system had competitive NPV or LCOE that is mainly due to the higher cost of BIPV compared to BAPV. Mestrado em Finanças

Nos últimos anos, o turismo em Portugal tem crescido significativamente sendo que o Algarve não é excepção. Mais concretamente, só no último ano, o número de turistas que visitaram o Algarve e a receita turística correspondente aumentaram 3,9% e 10,2% respectivamente. Esta tendência é esperada que continue nos anos vindouros. Além disso, o turismo rural também é um mercado em crescimento e cada vez é maior o número de pessoas que o procuram. Só nos ultimos três anos o número de dormidas aumentou 62,2%. Considerando esta tendência, este trabalho pretende analisar a viabilidade de um investimento num pequeno hotel rural no Algarve, usando a informação disponível neste sector e utilizando as ferramentas financeiras comumente usadas nesta indústria mais concretamente através de uma análise sobre o valor actual líquido. Todos os resultados desta pesquisa apontam para o facto de que este é um projecto que vale a pena investir tendo-se obtido um VAL de €304 474. Acrescentando ainda o facto da conjuntura actual favorável verificada no sector do turismo actual, este projecto tem potencial e deveria ser desenvolvido.

In the past few years, Portugal tourism is increasing significantly and Algarve's tourism is not an exception. More concretely, just in the year of 2015, the number of tourists that visited Algarve and the correspondent touristic revenue grew 3,9% and 10,2% respectively. This tendence is expected to continue in the years to come. Moreover, the rural tourism is also a market that is increasing and the number of people that pursuit it is increasing too. Just only in the past three years the number of sleeps raised 62,2%. Basing on this tendence, this work has the scope of analyzing the viability of an investment in a small rural hotel in Algarve, using the known information in this sector and through financial tools that are commonly used in this industry, more concretely an analysis of the net present value. After analyze all the results in this research we conclude that this is a project worth investing for as we get a NPV of €304 474. Adding also the favorable conjuncture that is verified in tourism rural sector nowadays, this project has potential and should be invested in.

Za podporo odločitvi investirati v novogradnjo hleva za svinje in klavno predelovalni obrat na analizirani kmetiji smo razvili model, ki bo služil kot podpora pri odločitvi za investicijo. Na strani odhodkov model zajema stroške kot so: krma, surovine, elektrika, voda,…, na strani prihodkov pa prodajo mladic in pitancev, ter končnih proizvodov (salame, prekajena rebra, meso iz tunke, zaseka). Rezultati kažejo, da se investicija v novogradnjo hleva za 30 plemenskih svinj, pri 8 % obrestni meri, povrne glede na parametre po dveh letih obratovanja hleva v 10. letu, NSV znaša 4.435 €. Pri 5,50 % obrestni meri se investicija povrne glede na vhodne parametre modela (prav tako po dveh letih obratovanja hleva) v 9. letu, kjer je ocenjena NSV znaša 8.308 €. Rezultati klavno predelovalnega obrata kažejo, da se investicija pri 8 % obrestni meri po štirih letih obratovanja povrne 17. leto, NSV znaša 3.421 €. Pri 5,50 % obrestni mera pa se investicija glede na vhodne parametre modela po treh letih obratovanja klavno predelovalnega obrata prav tako povrne 17. leto. Ocena NSV znaša 3.357 €.

We developed a model to support a decision to invest in building a new barn and slaughter and processing facilities for a pig farm. The model in based on an example of the farm is being analzed and will serve as decision support fort he planned investment. The cost for fodder, raw materials, electricty and water and included in the model, along with expenses in relation to selling off spring, porkes and final products (salami, smoked pork ribs, ''tunka'', and minced lard). The data indicate that investing in new-build barn for 30 breeding pigs at an 8 % interest rate repays in the 10th year, considering the parameters in the 2nd year of operating a barn. The NPV is €4.435. The investment repays in the 9th year, considering the input parameters of the model as a 2nd-year barn operation with a 5.50 % interest rate. The estimated NPV in 9th is €8.308. The results of the slaughter and processing facilities indicate that investment at an 8 % interest rate repays in the 17th year, considering the 4th year of operation. At a 5.50 % interest rate, the investment also repays in the 17th year. The estimated NPV is €3.357.
