▼ This thesis describes how I took part in a series of collaborations with dancers Danai Pappa and Katie Hall, musician George Williams and video artist Julie Kuzminska. To realise our collaborations, I built electronic sculptural instruments from junk using bricolage, the act of subversion, skip diving and appropriation. From an auto-ethnographic viewpoint, I explored how collaborations began, how relationships developed and how various levels of expertise across different disciplines were negotiated. I examined how the documentation of the performances related to, and could be realised as, video art in their own right. I investigated the themes of work, labour and effort that are used in the process of producing and documenting these works in order to better understand how to ‘create’. I analysed the gender dynamics that existed between my collaborators and myself, which led to the exploration of issues around interaction and intimacy, democratic roles and live art. The resulting works challenged gender stereotypes, the notion of what a musical instrument can be and how sound is produced through action/interaction. I found that reflective time was imperative; serendipity, constant awareness of one’s environment, community and intimate relationships greatly enhanced the success of the collaborations. Instruments became conduits and instigators with shifting implied genders based on their context or creative use. As well as sound being a product of movement, effort and interaction, I realised it was also an artefact of the instruments.

The present research aimed at investigating perspectives of deliberation in piano practice according to the levels of expertise, since the consulted literature supports this subject in polarized at extreme levels and leaves a gap in the discussion about the practice of intermediate levels among those proposed in the literature of cognitive psychology, namely: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and the expert. Based on the phenomenological principles of E. ▼ This study examined academic achievement
levels of Hispanic high school students. Seven high schools in Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida were selected. The schools were selected based on socio-economic status and demographics to provide a wide range of participation. The following are some of the purposes that guided this study: (a) to determine if there are differences in academic achievement among Hispanic high school students in each school, (b) to determine differences in academic achievement based on gender, (c) to determine differences in academic achievement based on LEP status, and (d) to determine if there is a relationship between grade point average and FCAT Reading scores and FCAT Mathematic scores. The findings of this study were delineated through an examination of data using mean Grade Point Averages, mean Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test Scores (Reading and Mathematics), socio-economics, gender, Limited English Proficiency status, and attendance. This study supported, but are not limited to, the following conclusions: (a) There was a difference in grade point averages among Hispanic high school students, (b) Hispanic students have lower mean grade point averages and lower mean FCAT Reading and Mathematic scores when compared to the school as a whole, (c) there are relationships between attendance and grade point averages and there is a relationship between grade point average and FCAT Reading and Mathematic scores (d) there are differences in grade point averages between male and female Hispanic students, (e) there is a difference in grade point average based on socio-economic level, and (f) there is a difference in grade point averages based on LEP status. Recommendations of the study include but are not limited to (a) further research in the area of academic achievement among Hispanic students but to disaggregate Hispanics to look for distinct differences. (b) research in the area of comparing LEP students and academic achievement., (c) research to determine why there is a disparity in numbers of 9th grade Hispanic students and 12th grade Hispanic students, (d) research of Hispanic students by doing a longitudinal study. The longitudinal study should follow 9th grade students from the high schools in one or more county through four years.

▼ This study examined the impact of different
levels of
task difficulty and
expertise on self-efficacy judgments. In
addition, the study examines how self-efficacy judgments affect the
amount of mental effort investment and task performance under
different
levels of task difficulty and
expertise. Results from
this study are used to build a performance model that helps
illustrate the relationship among these variables.; A quantitative
experimental design was used for the study. A strategic computer
game, WarCraft III, was used to examine the subjects’
levels of
expertise and task performances. Three tasks with different
difficulty
levels - Easy, Moderate, High were selected for the
experiment. A developed program that can randomly present a pop-out
window on the computer screen was used as a secondary task to
interrupt subjects’ engagement of the primary task and to examine
subjects’ amount of mental effort investment. In addition,
questionnaires were used to examine the subjects’ perceived
self-efficacy and self-reported mental effort. Sixty-six subjects
participated in the study.; One-way ANOVA result showed that there
was no significant difference between easy and moderate tasks. As a
result, data from these two tasks were combined as “Normal” task.
Data of “Normal” and “High” tasks were then used to test fourteen
hypotheses.; Results from t-test showed that there was a
significant and positive relationship between perceived
self-efficacy and
expertise. Subjects with high level of
expertise
have high self-efficacy and subjects with low level of
expertise
have low self-efficacy. However,
levels of task difficulty and
perceived self-efficacy were negatively correlated.; The higher the
levels of task difficulty are, the lower the perceived
self-efficacy is found. Results from the correlation and regression
analysis also indicated that the relationship between perceived
self-efficacy and self-reported mental effort was negative.
However, the scatter plot suggested that the relationship between
perceived self-efficacy and dual-task measured mental effort
roughly revealed an inverted-U shape – as efficacy increased,
effort also increased until tasks became challenging and then
effort appeared to decrease. Analysis also supported the conclusion
that there was a positive relationship between perceived
self-efficacy and task performance. The relationship between
levels
of task difficulty and secondary mental effort measures was also
positive and the relationship between
levels of task difficulty and
task performance was negative. Moreover, the results also indicated
that the relationship between
expertise and mental effort was
negative while the relationship between
expertise and task
performance was positive. Based on these results, a performance
model was established and path analysis was used to examine the
model.

▼ Pot podjetnika, ki želi mednarodno poslovati ni lahka.
The path of entrepreneurs into the foray of international business is not easy.

In a business world characterized by increasing complexity of technologies associated with the globalization of markets, technical knowledge and innovation become crucial assets and primary condition for developing competitive advantage. These issues are often associated with a particular figure within organizations: that of the expert. Indeed, these people are usually considered as a source of technological excellence and innovative solutions. It becomes thus crucial, in order to retain these key people, to value their expertise and to propose adequate conditions for the development of their knowledge and their innovation potential. As a response to this challenge, the dual ladder model was developed and has been soon recognized as a primary solution for the management of experts in the technological and industrial companies. This model proposes an alternative career path (technical ladder) to that of traditional managerial path. However, this solution, while a reference model in the management of experts, has not often brought satisfaction neither for those in charge of its…

▼ In this thesis, ties and time-
varying covariates in survival analysis are investigated. There are two types of ties: ties between event times (Type 1 ties) and ties between event times and the time that discrete time-
varying covariates change or "jump"(Type 2 ties). The Cox proportional hazards model is one of the most important regression models for survival analysis. Methods for including Type 1 ties and time-
varying covariates in the Cox proportional hazards model are well established in previous studies, but Type 2 ties have been ignored in the literature. This thesis discusses the effect of Type 2 ties on Cox's partial likelihood, the current default method to treat Type 2 ties in statistical packages SAS and R (called Fail before Jump in this thesis), and proposes alternative methods (Random and Equally Weighted) for Type 2 ties. A simulation study as well as an analysis of data sets from real research both suggest that both Random and Equally Weighted methods perform better than the other two methods. Also the effect of the percentages of Type 1 and Type 2 ties on these methods for handling both types of ties is discussed.

▼ The study has intended to analyze the Europeanization of the institutional structure for regional policy in Bulgaria after the first programming period of the country as a full-fledged member state of the EU. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 as part of the so called ‘Eastern Enlargement’ that was characterized by power asymmetry and strong conditionality. The study employs two research methods – document analysis of key policy documents and legislation, as well as qualitative interviews with key respondents with involvement or experience in the field of regional policy and development in Bulgaria. The analysis is underpinned by the concept of Europeanization and historical institutionalism which complement each other in order to explain the changes and the reasons for them. The main findings show that the EU requirements are only ‘accommodated’ in the already existing institutional structure of Bulgaria and real transformation has not occurred. The established regional level still does not have a significant role in the regional policy of the country because it represents neither self-government, nor administrative unit. The research suggests directions for future reform and refinement of the current institutional system with regard to the better formulation and implementation of regional policy in the country.

▼ This thesis establishes the traditional Jewish interpretative model PaRDeS as the foundation of a new film interpretation method, and suggests a PaRDeS interpretative process that can be used as a guide by other analysts, critics and scholars. PaRDeS is a sophisticated method of analysis that reflects millennia of Judaic explorations of narrative structures, stories, interpretations and commentaries.
PaRDeS interpretation encourages dialogues about cinema, and the meaning of films. The PaRDeS method responds to other film analyses in its own interpretative mission to coordinate and integrate multiple levels of meaning.
Using PaRDeS in this original way to interpret contemporary films is significant to both Jewish Studies and Film Studies. This thesis extends the investigations of contemporary uses of PaRDeS in Jewish Studies and introduces the method to Film Studies, responding to existing issues of film interpretation in doing so. A multi-level framework of different kinds of meaning differentiates PaRDeS from its contemporary counterparts, and from a tradition of film interpretation that narrows the scope of interpretative interest to ideological perspectives.
The originality of the PaRDeS conceptualisation of film meaning, the unique assumptions of the model, and its coordination and synthesis of different interpretative strategies differentiates PaRDeS from contemporary critical perspectives. PaRDeS film interpretation develops important insights about film meaning, and describes specific ways cinema reflects the world that creates and interprets films.
Since this is the first time the PaRDeS method has been used to produce formal interpretations of films, there is as yet no established process for doing so. This thesis develops a PaRDeS model of interpretation (Chapter Two) and uses it to generate new insights during the various investigations of different elements of film in the chapters that follow. PaRDeS has never been adapted for use as a modern tool of cinematic investigation before now, and this thesis is necessarily exploratory in its evolution of a new PaRDeS approach to film interpretation.
The PaRDeS method is developed in various multi-level interpretations of the following films: The Matrix (Larry and Andy Wachowski, 1999), Clueless (Amy Heckerling, 1995), Josie and the Pussycats (Harry Elfont & Deborah Kaplan, 2001), Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976), and Black Swan (Darren Aronofsky, 2010).
The new PaRDeS film interpretation method that this thesis produces is used to explore how film genre and structure (Chapter 3), critical responses (Chapter 4), cinematic expressions of theme (Chapter 5), filmmakers’ cinematic choices (Chapter 6), multi-level scene analysis (Chapter 7), film character and function (Chapter 8), film score…

▼ The aim of this study was to investigate noise levels in the New Zealand health industry. The goal was to investigate the room acoustics and the characteristics of the noise sources along with noise exposure of health care workers, in New Zealand, in dental clinics and orthopaedic cast clinics and assess whether they are at risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).
A literature review was conducted to determine the definition, cause, and ways to prevent NIHL in relation to the dental clinics and orthopaedic cast clinics. Also determined from a review of the literature were ways to assess and monitor the acoustics of these spaces.
Initially room acoustic measurements of background noise levels as well as reverberation times were made and frequency information on the major noise sources was obtained. This was followed by measurement of the daily noise dose exposure of staff working in the participating dental clinics and orthopaedic cast clinics.
It was found that noise dose levels did not exceed the damage risk criterion set by The New Zealand Occupational Safety and Health Service of Leq8h of 85 dBA and therefore staff were considered to not be at risk of NIHL. However, the background noise levels measured may be putting healthcare workers at risk of non-auditory related effects of noise exposure, affecting work performance, cognitive abilities and vital communication between staff and patients. Healthcare workers may also be at risk of non-auditory health effects due to increased noise annoyance leading to raised stress levels, which may ultimately lead to pathophysiological changes in the myocardium. Future research in the area of noise levels in the New Zealand health industry should
be performed to obtain noise data on a larger sample and look further at the non-auditory health effects of exposure to noise in the health industry.

▼ Constant environmental variation forces the adaptation of previously learned behaviors to suit instantaneous performance constraints through the transfer of learning. Researchers remain divided over whether the transfer of learning is facilitated by similarities between learning and transfer (performance) domains, per identical elements theory, or principles abstracted with learning and applied in transfer, per general principle theory. Uncertainty regarding the mechanisms underlying the transfer of learning is most marked with respect to complex perceptual-motor behaviors, owing to the absence of research that examines the transfer of critical perceptual-motor skills, such as visual anticipation, in natural skill settings. Effective visual anticipation is based on the capability to extract visual information from the variable immediate environment to guide anticipation of forthcoming events and constrain motor skills. The importance of anticipation to successful perceptual-motor behavior is accentuated when the time available to perceive a stimulus and execute a movement response is limited, such as in fast paced sports. The purpose of the research in this thesis was to determine whether identical elements theory or general principle theory predicts the transfer of visual anticipation across domains and motor skill tasks in natural skill settings. Three experiments were undertaken in order to establish if the degree of similarity between domains (sports) predicts transfer of visual anticipation, or whether expertise in a time stressed domain (sport) facilitates the transfer of anticipation to similar and dissimilar transfer domains. The first experiment examined small-scale expertise differences in the pick-up of visual information to guide anticipation and motor skills by comparing the capabilities of expert and near-expert karate athletes and novices to block attacks using an in-situ temporal occlusion paradigm. Results revealed small-scale expertise differences in the capability to pick-up visual information to guide anticipation and motor skills, whereby experts but not near-experts or novices were capable of utilizing both static and dynamic cues occurring prior to and throughout an opponent’s attacking motion to guide defensive responses. The finding that both static and dynamic sources can provide meaningful visual information to guide anticipation and motor skills furthers the understanding of expertise in biological motion perception and motor skill performance. The second and third experiments were designed to examine the predictions of identical elements theory, general principle theory and aspects of a novel conceptual model for the transfer of anticipation skill between domains using karate athletes as the transfer groups. Results revealed that non-domain experts and near-experts are as capable of using visual information to anticipate and guide motor skill responses as domain experts and near-experts in similar and dissimilar transfer domains. The findings suggest that transfer of…

▼ Over the past 40 years, researchers have extensively studied memory development in young children. While previous studies provide a sketch of early memory development, we must learn more before a complete picture is revealed. In Study 1, I examined the ability of 2-, 3-, and 4-year-old children to use a verbal reminder to cue retrieval of a non-verbal memory. I found that the ability to exploit verbal reminders to cue retrieval is present by 2 years of age. In Study 2, I tested the widely-held belief that field trips provide educational benefits that exceed those of a classroom lesson. Although 5- and 6-year-old children had richer autobiographical memories following the field trip, children of neither age learned or remembered more educational information following the field trip; in fact, under some conditions, they learned and remembered less. Finally, in Study 3, I examined the conditions under which 3-year-olds exhibit delay of gratification. Taken together, the studies in this thesis explore some of the remarkable developments that are thought to take place between 2 and 6 years of age.

This paper aims at a critical discussion on the relations between philosophy and the media. For this purpose, we make use of Foucault\'s theories about the problematics of governmentality through an analytical procedure inspired by the Archaeology of knowledge. We started from an initial mapping of different kinds of statements who were dedicated to discussing about the unfoldings of the popularization of philosophy, and to spreading allegedly philosophical cultural productions. Having a Brazilian magazine of cultural journalism CULT Revista Brasileira de Cultura as our empirical research platform, we have mapped all articles and interviews by and with philosophers or by authors with some philosophical background within a period of almost 17 years, from 1997, the magazine\'s founding year, until 2013, totaling 186 issues. The analysis has scrutinized the diverse modes of thematical, theoretical and methodological approaches within the magazine articles, by opting to categorize them according to their prominent discursive strategies. We inventoried authorsínstitutional affiliations, the styles of the narratives, the general themes, the theories, the privileged objects and key concepts. Therefore, we have tried…

▼ Crowdsourcing systems promise to leverage the "wisdom of crowds" to help solve many kinds of problems that are difficult to solve using only computers. Although a crowd of people inherently represents a diversity of skill
levels, knowledge, and opinions, crowdsourcing system designers typically view this diversity as noise and effectively cancel it out by aggregating responses. However, we believe that by embracing crowd workers' diverse
expertise levels, system designers can better leverage that knowledge to increase the wisdom of crowds.
In this thesis, we propose solutions to a limitation of current crowdsourcing approaches: not accounting for a range of
expertise levels in the crowd. The current body of work in crowdsourcing does not systematically examine this, suggesting that researchers may not believe the benefits of using mixed
expertise warrants the complexities of supporting it. This thesis presents two systems, Escalier and Kurator, to show that leveraging mixed
expertise is a worthwhile endeavor because it materially benefits system performance, at scale, for various types of problems. We also demonstrate an effective technique, called
expertise layering, to incorporate mixed
expertise into crowdsourcing systems. Finally, we show that leveraging mixed
expertise enables researchers to use crowdsourcing to address new types of problems.

▼ The question that this study addressed was how
Catholic educators from diverse experiential backgrounds negotiate
personally persuasive and authoritative discourses in fashioning
their identities as assistant principals. The inquiry is framed by
poststructuralist perspectives on identity and uses as a
methodology an ethnographic interview approach in an effort to
understand the transition from teacher to assistant principal.
Interviews with three first-year assistant principals in two
Catholic school districts in a Western Canadian province formed
part of the data. To obtain the school district’s perspectives, I
also interviewed district-level personnel who were responsible for
leadership formation. Documents from the Ministry of Education that
included the newly developed provincial standards for principals as
well as documents from the two school districts were also analyzed.
The research findings reveal that beginning assistant principals
negotiate their identities as educational leaders when they assume
a role and that the expectations of the role existed before their
arrival. These expectations are the authoritative discourses that
shape the educational leader within the school district and that
are negotiated with the personally persuasive discourses of the
leader. The tensions that new assistant principals in the study
negotiated were conflicting discourses of leadership and the
dissonance between the challenges and affirmations regarding
participants’ deeply held values and the traditional institutional
demands on administrators and between the role expectations and the
autonomous decision making of leaders. The implications of
emphasizing questions of identity in leadership development shift
the thinking on the assistant principal beyond the organizational
structure of the role. School districts must better attend to the
development of the identity of their educational leaders by
restructuring leadership training programs and ensuring the
effectiveness of mentoring programs. New assistant principals must
themselves address the differences between role and identity and
direct attention to the importance of developing and strengthening
their identities as educational leaders.

▼ As Business Process Management (BPM) is evolving and organisations are becoming more process oriented, the need for Expertise in BPM amongst practitioners has increased. Proactively managing Expertise in BPM is essential to unlock the potential of BPM as a management paradigm and competitive advantage. Whilst great attention is being paid by the BPM community to the technological aspects of BPM, relatively little research or work has been done concerning the expertise aspect of BPM.
There is a substantial body of knowledge on expertise itself, however there is no common framework in existence at the time of writing, describing the fundamental attributes characterising Expertise in the illustrative context of BPM. There are direct implications of the understanding and characterisation of Expertise in the context of BPM as a key strategic component and success factor of BPM itself, as well as for those involved in BPM. Expertise in the context of BPM needs to be characterised to understand it, and be able to proactively manage it. Given the relative infancy of research into Expertise in the context of BPM, an exploration of the relevance and importance of Expertise in the context of BPM was considered essential, to ensure the study itself was of value to the BPM field. The aims of this research are firstly to address the two research questions 'why is expertise important and relevant in the context of BPM?', and 'how can Expertise in the context of BPM be characterised?', and secondly, the development of a comprehensive and validated A-priori model characterising Expertise in the illustrative context of BPM. The study is theory-guided. It has been undertaken via an extensive literature review across relevant literature domains, and a revelatory case study utilising several methods: informal discussions, an open-ended survey, and participant observation. An a-priori model was then developed which comprised of several Constructs and Sub-constructs, and several overall aspects of Expertise in BPM. This was followed by the conduct of interviews in the validation phase of the revelatory case study.
The primary contributions of this study are to the fields of expertise, BPM and research. Contributions to the field of expertise include a comprehensive review of expertise literature in general and synthesised critique on expertise research, characterisation of expertise in an illustrative context as a system, and a comprehensive narrative of the dynamics and interrelationships of the core attributes characterising expertise. Contributions to the field of BPM include firstly, the establishment of the importance of understanding Expertise in the context of BPM, including a comprehensive overview of the role the relevance and importance of Expertise in the context of BPM, through explanation of the effect of Expertise in BPM. Secondly, a model characterising Expertise in the context of BPM, which can be used by BPM practitioners to clearly articulate and illuminate the state of Expertise in BPM in organisations.…

The writings of Edmond Malinvaud (1923-2015), in their breadth and generality, provide an answer to three problems in the history of macroeconomics after the collapse of Keynesianism : Is the search for micro-foundations directly responsible for the transformations of macroeconomics since the 1970s? How to explain the decline of Disequilibrium theory during the 1980s? How to explain the success of the New Classical Macroeconomics in the 1980s? Edmond Malinvaud’s writings show also that the history of macroeconomics is not reducible to a simple history of ideas, as it must also account for the influence of applied macroeconomics and economic expertise.

Parental and teacher knowledge of child development is related to the behavior of parents and teachers and the development of the child. 69 women, 50 with and 19 without a job in childcare, were asked about their knowledge of child development using a questionnaire. Women were compared in their estimations of the age of normative development regarding their experience in working with children, educational level and maternity. The comparisons showed no differences between women in their estimations of cognitive or socio-emotional development. Women without experience with own children, or children in a professional context, and without a high-school diploma estimated the development of some gross-motor and language skills at a later age than women with either experience with children or a high-school diploma. The comparisons between 18 women with and 18 without professional expertise showed that those who possess expertise estimated the normative development more often too early and those who lack expertise more often too late. In the estimations of the fine motor skill development, women showed differences only…

Application of repertory grid technique to explore perceptions of expertise held by those working within the profession of conductive education.

▼ Conductive Education (CE), a psycho-pedagogic approach to working with individuals with neuromotor disorders (Sutton,2002), is practised in Statutory and Third Sector health and education provisions within the UK. This fact alone raises the need to explore the role and professional accountability of the conductor as the professional delivering this programme of education. Whilst there is a Professional Body (Professional Conductors Association) (PCA) and a requirement for validated Continuing Professional Development (CPD), there is no benchmark for expertise, or identification of the characteristics, skills and knowledge associated with it. This thesis as an exploratory study of conductors' perceptions of expertise is the first of its kind to be undertaken with conductors working in the UK. CE, underpinned by both constructivist and constructionist methodologies (Grundtvig, 2012), fits well with Personal Construct Theory (PCT), the chosen methodology for this study. This study is undertaken in two main phases. In the first, Repertory Grid Technique (RGT), as a research method associated with PCT (Hagans, Neimeyer, Goodholm, 2000), is used to interview 20 Conductors working in the UK. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to construct a quantitative analysis of individual grid findings, a process that serves to underpin subsequent thematic analysis. An iterative process of thematic analysis, influenced by Constructivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz, 2006), facilitates synthesis of the conductors' perceptions of expertise. Expertise is perceived by the conductors to be holistic in nature and comprised of belief, personality, knowledge and skill. With reference to the pragmatist underpinnings of Positive Psychology, (Peterson & Seligman, 2004), items generated in phase one are subsequently used to construct a 92-point questionnaire. This questionnaire as a self-reflective measurement tool serves to complete the aims of this study. This exploratory study broadly fulfils its aims and addresses expressed need for greater accountability, academic justification of practice, desire for professional development and pragmatism within CE (Kozma, 1995). Weaknesses are identified, however the findings of this study serve to raise awareness of expertise, impact practice and conductor training.

This dissertation looks into users’ expertise and professionalization in the case of peer-to-peer platforms. These organizations refer to the sum of their users as a “community” and the purpose of this research is to question the implications of this denomination. Drawing on a qualitative methodology through which I have collected interview and netnographic (Kozinets 2002) data, this dissertation puts forward the figure of the “professional amateur”. First, users become entrepreneurs of the self in putting on platforms’ market their belongings and skills (Foucault 2004; Du Gay, Salaman, and Rees 1996). Reciprocal and public evaluations extend these stakes to all users (producers and consumers) that come to think in opportunity costs. Users assetize their belongings and skills, and their self: life is produced in economic terms. Second, drawing on Lacanian studies (Roberts 2005, 1991; Stavrakakis 2008) this research highlights how evaluations are places for self-demonstration. In doing so, platforms instrumentalize users’ narcissism in order to create an efficient control structure where they only have to manage excessively deviant transactions. Third, this dissertation puts forward the professional amateur as an evaluation expert on peer-to-peer platforms, putting in perspective the technical expertise of algorithms (Orlikowski and Scott 2013; Jeacle…

▼ The motivation to this master`s thesis is an increasing demand on evaluation of
expertise report in conformity with requirements of internationally accepted standards as well as with national legal regulations. This master`s thesis is focused on defining of requirements of International Valuation Standards – IVS. The objective of the introductory study of this thesis is an effort to provide overview of the structure, the history and development of International Valuation Standards – IVS. The introductory study points out that the IVS standard is not stationary one, but shows the importance to keep the continuous track and analyze other possible information sources in connection to it. The main objective is to analyze the principal requirements of International Valuation Standards for expert as a person,
expertise activity and required features of
expertise report. The gained information is processed on the base of an
expertise system approach, where the
expertise is interpreted as a structured object with principal features:
expertise object,
expertise problem,
expertise activity,
expertise report and expert. Established findings are then analyzed regarding to such interpreted system approach of
expertise and applied in the determination of type of approach which an expert should follow in the procedure of making out an
expertise report of property valuation. Finally, an example
expertise report for valuation of real estate is compiled. Such
expertise report could be considered in conformity with national legal regulation as well as with requirements of International Valuation Standards – IVS. The
expertise report is a practical example of findings of this master`s thesis.

▼ This project examines the epistemic tools by which psychotherapists in competing orientations understand and treat mental illness. I compare the expert practices of clinicians adopting a psychodynamic (also known as psychoanalytic) approach with those of “evidence-based” therapists (for example, cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral). Data from 18 months of ethnographic observations in a psychiatry residency program, and 60 in-depth interviews, inform my argument that these clinicians embody distinct forms of
expertise that have both professional and social implications. I show that the former adopt an ‘affective-relational’ orientation that values emotions as sources of knowledge, and the therapeutic relationship as a tool for insight and treatment. In contrast, the latter rely on a ‘techno-scientific’ approach that revolves around inscription, quantification, and time-limited interventions. Drawing on scholarship in social studies of science, medical sociology, the sociology of professions, and the sociology of knowledge, I suggest that these health workers’ practices help illuminate questions about jurisdiction and autonomy, credibility, and the making of social knowledge. First, my data indicates that maintaining autonomy can detract from a group’s ability to succeed in contests of jurisdiction. Second, this project shows that whereas practitioners of psychoanalytic therapy emphasize clinical wisdom and self-reflexivity as legitimating tools, their colleagues in cognitive behavioral approaches assert scientific and institutional credibility. Lastly, this research illuminates the value of subjectivity in the process of knowledge-making by establishing the (spatio-temporally specific) epistemic role of emotions.
My research captures the profession of talk therapy in transition, and argues that this has implications beyond the institutional realm. Drawing on the work of Foucault, I suggest that the therapy room is one important locus for the transformation of ‘modern selves.’ I argue that therapists promote distinct versions of what it means to be a ‘well-functioning’ human being as they take either ‘developmental’ (in psychodynamic therapy) or ‘precipitating’ (in cognitive and behavioral interventions) events as their platform of intervention. This project proposes that whether they construct historical narratives linking past and present, or classify, change and measure parts of selves (behaviors, thoughts, emotions), these therapies promote powerful technologies for shaping the ‘normal.’

▼ In the era of information and technology, organizations’ competitive advantage and sustainability increasingly depend on how they effectively create new knowledge. Drawing on relevant theories, this study examined the associations of organizational knowledge creation (OKC) with employee
expertise and the quality of interpersonal relationships. It also investigated the moderating role of transformational leadership in explaining these relationships. Along with multiple preliminary data analyses, hierarchical liner modeling was performed to analyze multilevel data collected from 218 white-collar employees from 44 teams in diverse U.S. organizations.
The study results indicated that employee
expertise and the quality of interpersonal relationships are positively associated with OKC. A positive relationship of OKC with transformational leadership was also supported. Unexpectedly, a negative moderating role of transformational leadership was found in explaining the relationship between OKC and the quality of interpersonal relationships. In other words, when transformational leadership is high, the positive association between OKC and the quality of interpersonal relationships is attenuated. However, there was no significant moderating effect of transformational leadership in explaining the relationship between OKC and employee
expertise. That is, the impact of employee
expertise on OKC is generally positive regardless of the degree to which transformational leadership is exercised.
This study contributes to both the organizational knowledge creation and leadership literature. For the organizational knowledge creation literature, it expands our understanding of how the three essential elements (i.e., ba, knowledge assets, and the SECI process) of organizational knowledge creation influence and interact with each other. The current study has value in providing first empirical evidence of unique combinations of variables influencing organizational knowledge creation process. For the leadership literature, this study sheds light on a contingent or even negative side of transformational leadership. From a practical standpoint, this study contributes to white-collar organizations wanting to increase their capabilities for organizational knowledge creation by informing individual and contextual enablers and understanding the interplay among them. HR practitioners and management should provide their employees with HR interventions that help increase employee
expertise and cultivate positive interpersonal relationships in the workplace. As for leadership development, transformational leadership training is recommended, but with some caveats. Research agendas for future scholars are also suggested along with the study limitations.

▼ The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 resulted in the failure of hundreds of banks in the U.S. alone, significant spikes in unemployment and disastrous consequences for firms and their stakeholders across numerous industries. In this context, with tremendous societal implications, this research draws on institutional theory and the strategic management literature to consider whether environmental shock alters the relationship between strategic conformity and firm performance. In doing so, this research also examines the contingency of board capital, arguing that environmental shock creates an opportunity for the board of directors to exert greater influence on the firm’s strategy-setting and ultimately its performance. These predictions are tested using a sample of 348 banks who were required to report financial information to the Federal Reserve from 2005 to 2013, augmented by information on over 7,000 of these banks’ directors. While the results do not support the assertion that strategic deviation becomes more valuable during crisis, I do find evidence that board composition affects the strategic conformity of the firm. Further, the industry experience of board members is associated with higher firm performance over a multi-year period following a shock. The results also indicate that other related
expertise obtained outside of the industry can also prove useful to the firm during periods of environmental shock. In addition to contributing a greater understanding of when and how board capital can affect firm outcomes, this research also provides a deeper understanding of one of the most disruptive economic events of the modern era.

▼ The impacts and implications of climate change are as diverse as the global community faced with addressing this social-ecological issue. Expert-driven communication strategies that emphasize an abundance of scientific information laden with technical language and positivist values have insufficiently appealed to non-technical audiences. This shortcoming has widened the gap between technical and non-technical publics and fails to acknowledge the legitimacy of different forms of
expertise that include social dimensions of climate change. Different ways of knowing have also been ignored, largely reducing climate change communication to static, one-way presentations of climate science information. Iterative, interactive, and tangible learning processes are underrepresented in climate change communication efforts but can better resonate and engage many non-technical audiences. The power of place-based connections and communication allows for non-technical publics to relate to global climate change through the familiarity and appreciation of local landscapes. National parks and wildlife refuges, places of public value and trust, can seed connections between non-technical visiting publics and climate change. Non-technical audiences can better relate to and understand climate change through the renegotiation of language, relevance, and resonant messages framed in a valued landscape - essentially through the lens of place. These connections, in tandem with hands-on engagement practices, can foster a network of engaged climate change citizens with the capacity to inspire others outside of parks and refuges.

▼ The
subject of this dissertation research is the field of professional organizations in North America that promote and assist democratization movements around the world. These organizations use a form of specialized expert knowledge to help activists, politicians and civil society organizations build democratic institutions. Specifically, this research investigates how historical academic debates shape the everyday practices of professionals in this field, and how these practices in turn shape contemporary debates. The study adopts a mixed methods approach by combining an intellectual history of democracy research and qualitative interview research with professionals working in the field. By examining the everyday practice of
expertise, this dissertation contributes to emerging scholarly debates spanning the intersections of the sociology of knowledge, political sociology and international development studies by asking an ancient question. How can democracy be a collection of popular political ideals, yet also the object of specialized, technical or social scientific knowledge? According to the findings of this research, the contemporary practice of democracy assistance emerged out of debates about this paradox and, more importantly, organizations within this field rely on the insoluble nature of democratic theory and practice to justify expert interventions in countries struggling for democracy.
