▼ INTRODUÇÃO: A reinserção do indivíduo na sociedade, após ele ter cometido um ato anti-social, iniciou-se com o Iluminismo. Atualmente várias pesquisas têm sido realizadas para se verificar a eficácia de trabalhos de reinserção social para criminosos. Entretanto na realidade brasileira não existem trabalhos sistematizados para a população prisional. Como decorrência disto, pensou-se em sistematizar uma intervenção terapêutica para prevenção de reincidência penitenciária e verificar sua eficácia. MÉTODOS: A terapia cognitivo-comportamental para prevenção à reincidência penitenciária é composta por 10 sessões estruturadas. O grupo de sujeitos foi formado por sentenciados, que cumpriam pena no regime semi-aberto, presos, no mínimo, pela segunda vez (reincidentes penitenciários); o tempo máximo de pena que teriam que cumprir deveria ser inferior a quinze anos e já deveriam ter cumprido tempo suficiente para requisitar progressão de regime. Os 43 sujeitos que iniciaram a pesquisa foram divididos em dois grupos grupo de trabalho e grupo controle. Foram feitas entrevistas e aplicações de escalas antes e depois da intervenção. RESULTADOS: Como resultado do trabalho não se percebeu diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os sujeitos que estavam no grupo de trabalho e no grupo controle em relação a reincidência penitenciária. Em relação às escalas aplicadas, os sentenciados que terminaram o programa apresentaram um escore maior no Questionário de Pensamentos Automáticos, comparado com aqueles que desistiram. Os que concluíram a pesquisa e estava no grupo de trabalho percebemos que o Programa de Prevenção a Reincidência Penitenciária reduz o medo de avaliação negativa. Os que estavam no grupo controle apresentaram um decréscimo na Escala de Estresse e Fuga Social. Após 12 meses de intervenção, entre os sentenciados que iniciaram a pesquisa, os reincidentes mostraram uma tendência a ter um escore menor no Questionário de auto-estima antes da intervenção. Os reincidentes que estavam no grupo de trabalho apresentaram uma tendência a já terem cumprido mais tempo de suas penas e os do grupo controle, uma tendência a ter um escore menor na Escala de Medo de Avaliação Negativa antes do início do programa e um escore menor na escala de Estresse e Fuga Social depois da intervenção. Entre os sentenciados que terminaram o programa e reincidiram, pôdese perceber que a intervenção causou uma redução nos resultados no escore da Escala de Estresse e Fuga Social e uma tendência em diminuir o escore no Questionário de Pensamentos Automáticos. Dentre os não reincidentes existe uma diminuição no escore da Escala de Medo de Avaliação Negativa depois do programa; os que estavam no grupo de trabalho, apresentaram uma tendência de redução do medo de avaliação negativa e os que estavam no grupo controle apresentaram uma diminuição no escore da escala de estresse e fuga social. ▼ The practice of diversion has grown and spread throughout South Africa. The Child Justice Act (75 of 2008) contributed considerably to the formal practice of diversion and has helped diversion service providers to better implement juvenile diversion. This study aimed at examining the implementation of Khulisa‟s juvenile diversion programmes in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The theories framing this study were: the theory of Differential Association by Edwin Sutherland and the labelling theory. The objectives of this study were to examine the implementation of the Positively Cool and the Silence the Violence programmes, and to determine the challenges faced by Khulisa in implementing these programmes. To achieve these objectives, the study adopted a qualitative research paradigm where purposive sampling was used to locate the files of divertees. Data was collected from the database and 32 case files of Khulisa divertees with the age range of 12-17 years. The sample contained divertees from different race groups including; Black (15), Indian (14), Coloured (2) and White (1). Data was analysed using the qualitative content analysis method. The findings of the study revealed that Khulisa implements their programmes in line with the Child Justice Act. Prevalent issues affecting the implementation of these programmes as identified from the case files were; reasons for juvenile offending which included peer pressure, individual factors, economic circumstances, social circumstances, catalysts for offending behaviour, drugs and alcohol use, circumstantial offending and stress and negative labels. Other factors impacting on the programmes were: family support, group work, diversion as a form of restorative justice and programme compliance with the Child Justice Act. Challenges encountered by Khulisa when implementing diversion programmes included issues of having to deal with the harsh socio-economic circumstances of divertees, lack of parental support, recidivism and challenges in facilitating group work. It is generally accepted that pre-teen sexual offences are becoming a widespread problem in South Africa and social workers are ill-equipped to render a competent service to prevent these youth offenders from re-offending. To date, the social, judicial and legislative systems do not provide any definite guidelines to prevent pre-teen sexual offenders from re-offending. The purpose of this study was to present guidelines which could serve as a framework when designing prevention programmes for pre-teen sex offenders. With the results of the study an attempt will be made to augment the knowledge and skills in this area in the social service delivery system, in order to render a professional and effective service to prevent pre-teen sexual offenders from reoffending. The objectives of the study were: first, to explain policy under the South African criminal justice system regarding crime according to the Sexual Offences Act, no 23 of 1957, and the Child Care Act, no 74 of 1983, as well as government and non-government services available to children under the age of 13 who sexually offend; second, to describe the social and personal circumstances of pre-teen sexual offenders in order to illustrate the nature of the deviant sexual behaviour of these children and to determine the need for prevention programmes; third, to reflect on the nature and function of prevention programmes for pre-teen sexual offenders and to investigate the need for social workers to utilize these programmes in welfare agencies in South Africa; fourth, to determine the nature of social work programmes which social workers in welfare agencies are using to address the needs and/or problems of pre-teen sexual offenders; and finally, to describe the knowledge and practice skills needed by social workers to design prevention programmes for pre-teen sexual offenders. The literature review was focused on research findings relating to issues examined in this study. An exploratory research design for the study was confined to a purposive sample of 79 respondents who were identified from a universe of 130 social workers to assess their need to develop prevention programmes in order to render a competent service to pre-teen sex offenders and their families. The results were analysed mainly quantitatively. The empirical study enabled the researcher to draw certain conclusions. The main finding was that pre-teen sex offences were on the increase, and that social workers therefore required ever greater knowledge and skills to empower them to use existing prevention of re-offending programmes for preteen sexual offenders, or alternatively, needed to develop their own such programmes. A number of recommendations flowed from the findings. ▼ Research indicates that states have implemented juvenile justice reforms to enact harsher punishments, to transfer greater numbers and younger juvenile offenders to adult criminal court, and to restrict discretion of the juvenile court judges. Social science studies have found that harsher punishments, transfers to adult criminal court and other measures do not work, but that comprehensive approaches which address the numerous major factors contributing to juvenile offending have been successful. This study examined the legal status of the juvenile justice system by focusing upon ten diverse sample states and analyzed the social science research on factors contributing to juvenile offending and on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation approaches. The study was accomplished by legal research, qualitative social science research, and analysis of both. Findings indicated: a) state statutes require and allow adult punishment of juvenile offenders, transfer of juvenile offenders to adult criminal court, and direct filing of charges against juveniles in adult criminal court; most states begin these proceedings at age 14, some have no age minimum; b) social science research indicates numerous factors contribute to juvenile offending with most of the factors categorized into the major factors of early antisocial behavior, deviant peers, parents and family, sociomoral reasoning, biological factors, and violence which interact with each other creating a complicated web; and c) prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts should be comprehensive, multidimensional and multimodal addressing the interacting major factors contributing to juvenile offending and the needs of the juvenile, the family, and the home environment. Implications include the need for legislators to access the social science research to craft legislation and programs which are effective. Suggestions for improvement include collaboration within communities and with knowledgeable and committed social science professionals and educators. Areas suggested for further research include education of the public, the media, and stakeholders; long term follow-up on promising programs; design and improvements in approaches based upon the social science research; meeting the needs of the juvenile, the family, and the home environment; and study of how the factors may differ for disabled juveniles. ▼ Vad motiverar en kriminellt belastad person att bryta sin brottsliga bana och söka psykoterapi som en del av den processen? Syftet med föreliggande uppsats är att öka förståelsen för psykoterapins plats i en identitetsförändringsprocess. Frågeställningarna som studien vill undersöka är: tidigare kriminellas motiv till att söka psykoterapi, deras förväntningar på vad psykoterapin ska hjälpa dem med, samt skäl för att ta avstånd ifrån eller återgå till ett kriminellt liv. Studien är en kvalitativ, explorativ undersökning som utgår ifrån intervjuer med fyra personer som själva har sökt psykoterapi efter avtjänade fängelsestraff. Resultatet visar att motiven för att lämna kriminaliteten var primärt de anhöriga, en vilja att inte förlora mer relationer, tid, arbete och boende, en rädsla för att dö samt en ökad personlig mognad. De har valt att gå i psykoterapi för att få hjälp att stoppa sitt kriminella beteende genom kontroll och prevention. Vidare att få bearbeta sina tidigare upplevelser och känslor samt få hjälp med återanpassningen till samhället; bli rehabiliterade. Psykoterapin påverkade och stärkte identitetsförändringsprocessen. Motiven för att tidigare välja kriminalitet var ett behov av att slippa ångest, maktlöshet, frustration, utsatthet och stämpling. Ytterligare skäl var få känna kicken, välbehaget och gemenskapen. Slutsatserna är att för att en förändring ska vara möjlig behöver den kriminella identiteten vara uppluckrad varför behandling under anstaltstiden sällan blir verksam. Det kriminella, mot förändringen konkurrerande, normsystemet behöver vara tillräckligt försvagat. Psykoterapin och psykoterapeutens plats i en identitetsförändringsprocess blir att vara ett stöd i den mest sköra fasen, i det vakum som uppstår när sociala band i övrigt är svaga och den nya identiteten ännu inte är tillräckligt stadigt förankrad. Den känslomässiga kopplingen till de behov och känslor som kämpar emot varandra i förändringsprocessen behöver benämnas och bearbetas.

▼ ABSTRACT Migraine is a common neurological disorder causing huge suffering both for the individuals affected and for society. As migraine is a chronic disorder that cannot be cured, but merely relieved, prevention is of great importance. Exercise is often recommended in migraine prevention, but evidence of efficacy is still lacking. It can be difficult for patients with migraine to perform exercise, since heavy physical activity is a well-known trigger for migraine. It is known that pharmacological prevention is underused, but the patients’ overall views and experiences of migraine prevention have not been sufficiently studied. The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate different aspects of physical activity in relation to headache, especially the possible preventive effects of exercise in migraine. Furthermore, it aimed to elucidate the complexity of migraine prevention from patients’ perspectives. Study I was divided into a prospective and a cross-sectional part aiming to evaluate the relationship between level of physical activity and migraine and non-migraine headache. This was done using data from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Surveys. Study II was an intervention study aiming to evaluate a method of exercise, for untrained patients with migraine, regarding improvement of exercise capacity and migraine status. Study III was a randomized controlled study in which exercise was compared with common pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments with regard to migraine prevention. Study IV was a qualitative study using content analysis to elucidate migraine prevention from a patient perspective. The main findings were that individuals with migraine and other types of headache are less physically active than headache-free individuals. There was also a strong linear trend of higher prevalence of ‘low physical activity’ with increasing headache frequency. It can be difficult for patients with migraine to perform exercise. An exercise programme based on aerobic exercise led by a physiotherapist showed no deterioration in migraine status: to the contrary, migraine status improved, and so did maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and quality of life. The effect of exercise in the randomized controlled study did not significantly differ when the reduction in migraine frequency was compared with common and well-documented pharmacological and non-pharmacological options. Increased VO2max was significantly improved in the exercise group compared with the other two treatments, and side effects were only seen in the pharmacological group. The findings suggest that exercise may be an option for the prophylactic treatment of migraine in patients who do not benefit from, or do not want, daily medication. The patients’ views on prevention are also important to consider in migraine prevention. ▼ ABSTRACTAIM: The overall aim of this longitudinal PhD project was to gain increased knowledge about factors associated with fear of falling (FOF) falls and near falls, as well as to contribute to improved clinical fall prediction for peoplewith mild Parkinson’s disease (PD).METHODS: People diagnosed with PD and receiving care at the university hospital outpatient neurology clinic were assessed during the “on” phase using a broad range of rating scales and clinical tests targeting balance and gait problems as well as motor and non-motor symptoms. The participants then registered all prospective falls and near falls for six months by using a diary.RESULTS: Paper I identified everyday walking difficulties as the strongest factor independently associated with FOF, followed by independence in daily activities, functional balance, and fatigue. Paper II identified FOF to be the strongest factor independently associated with prospective falls and/or near falls, followed by history of near falls, and retropulsion during an unexpected shoulder pull. Paper III showed that the discriminate ability of a recently suggested clinical 3-Step Falls Prediction Model (3-step model) is acceptable and better than that of single predictors. Extended analyses showed that a new model for prediction of falls and/or near falls (including history of near falls, tandem gait and retropulsion) had better discriminant ability than the 3-step model. Paper IV found that different standardizations of the 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT) for measuring gait speed yielded very similar results, including cut-off scores for future falls, suggesting that the clinical conduct of 10MWT can be simplified.CONCLUSIONS: Everyday walking difficulties should be a primary target when attempting to reduce FOF in mild PD, and balance training should focus on self-generated perturbations caused by everyday activities ratherthan external perturbations. Moreover, FOF and asking about prior near falls seem to be important issues for prediction of falls and near falls early in the disease course. The 3-step model can be recommended as a clinicalprediction tool but a new model may be considered a promising alternative. Clinical gait speed measurement by the 10MWT can be simplified by not using acceleration distance or repeated trials in mild PD.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Adolescence is the developmental stage between childhood and adulthood. This indicates a growth process the goal of which is maturity. This growth process is regarded as a turbulent phase as there are various adolescent developmental tasks to be mastered that bring about certain challenges. These challenges have resulted in youths engaging in risk-taking behaviour, such as antisocial behaviour and committing crime. Several factors or social problems in South Africa lead to the vulnerability of youths, which leads to crime. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perspectives of probation officers regarding the contribution of diversion programmes for male juvenile offenders to prevent re-offending. The research was done on the basis of an extensive literature review, which focused on the nature and extent of youth crime, the legal points of departure of the Child Justice Act (75 of 2008) and diversion programmes to prevent re-offending. A combined quantitative and qualitative research approach and an exploratory and descriptive research design was utilized in this study because the researcher wanted to develop a better understanding of the social problem or phenomenon and the perspectives of probation officers with respect to the contribution of diversion programmes for male juvenile offenders, as well as the factors that lead to re-offending in South Africa. The respondents consisted of all probation officers employed by government organizations in the Eden-Karoo Region who have the necessary knowledge and experience regarding the topic. A purposive, non-probability sampling was used. Data were gathered through a semi-structured questionnaire in 20 separate interviews. The composition of the questionnaire was based on the information obtained from the literature review. Based on the results arising from the literature and empirical research, appropriate conclusions and recommendations were made. The results were largely confirmed by the literature review, namely that diversion programmes contribute to the prevention of re-offending if correctly implemented, that significant resources in the intervention should be involved and follow-up care and monitoring after the programmes or interventions must take place.

▼ In this research project the overcrowding problem in South African prisons will be analysed as well as the influence it had on the rehabilitation of offenders. The problem of overcrowding in South Africa's prisons is very clear when the approved accommodation of a prison is compared with the actual number of prisoners incarcerated. Prison sentences are a favoured form of punishment throughout the world. More and more people seek alternatives to incarceration in order to reduce prison overcrowding. The time to finalize criminal cases, releases on bail, the abolishment of minimum sentences and better utilization of community based sentences are some of the issues which can reduce overcrowding. One of the concepts that was implemented to establish rehabilitation within prisons was Unit Management. The number of prisoners incarcerated makes it difficult for Unit Management to be effective. In some cases prisoners are kept under inhumane conditions which is a violation of the Constitution of South Africa. Currently the morale of members of Correctional Services is very low and this has an influence on the way in which they treat prisoners. These members are supposed to be an example to prisoners but instead their bad behaviour has a negative influence on prisoner's discipline. Correctional Services goal is to make every member a rehabilitator but overcrowding will first have to be reduced. Individual attention to prisoners is one of the building blocks of Unit Management but overcrowding of prisons creates a member/prisoner ratio which is far too high to be effective with rehabilitating prisoners. Community based sentences can also be utilized more frequently by the courts. It can better rehabilitation possibilities and through this the objectives of punishment are met. In the past the focus of South African Law was on the criminal. With the Correctional Services Act (Act 111/1998) this focus was shifted to the victim as well. Both these parties can now come together and discuss the offence as well as the influence it had on the victim. ▼ The study explores the beliefs and wishes of respondents in Pretoria concerning crime seriousness and criminal sentencing in South Africa. It is suggested that in a democracy, the legal system must reflect the values of the individual citizen if it is to achieve a legitimacy based upon the concepts of moral consent and universality, and argues that this can only be achieved when all citizens have a voice. The study undertakes and reports on a survey of 400 units, across race divisions in and around the City of Pretoria by initially emulating, and thereafter extending, the British Crime Survey. The thesis offers seven chapters divided into two primary components. The first component, chapters one to four, systematically debate the historical/theoretical foundations of sentencing practice (both globally and in respect of South Africa), and identifies the inherent problems faced by contemporary criminal justice systems. The study utilises sentencing literature to provide an in-depth appraisal of theoretical paradigms and, thereafter, evaluates the successes and failures of various sentencing options. The second component, chapters five to seven, unpack the Pretorian research in relation to various other foreign research surveys, and culminates by offering a South African sentencing guide (severity index) based upon the research findings. The findings identify the people of Pretoria to be punitive. Respondents are shown to regard rape and driving whilst over the legal alcohol level causing the death of an innocent victim as the most serious crimes, followed by deliberate murder, selling illegal drugs and terrorism. Percentage differential between these "most serious" crimes is negligible. Many respondents indicate long prison sentences or the death penalty for these specific offences. Overall, Blacks prefer imprisonment whilst Whites are shown to be more conservative and more amenable to other sentencing options. Gender differences in relation to seriousness and sentence scores are slight, but females and the older age group are noted to be more fearful of being victimised even though this fear is not supported by actual victimisation rates. Tendo em consideração o estado de degradação do parque habitacional nacional é necessário promover a sua regeneração dado o efeito nocivo com que este se repercute na nossa sociedade. É de referir a existência em Portugal de uma cultura reativa, por vezes tardia, de resolução de problemas dos edifícios, devendo-se, de certo modo, à existência de uma legislação generalista e claramente insuficiente, de uma fiscalização inoperante e à inexistência, durante décadas, de políticas de incentivo à manutenção. Torna-se imperativo a necessidade da implementação de medidas preventivas que evitem o aparecimento do mesmo cenário de deterioração. A presente dissertação insere-se no âmbito da reabilitação de edifícios pelo facto de esta atividade ter uma importância fundamental no desempenho do parque edificado, o que reflete a situação socioeconómica do país e no desenvolvimento sustentável das sociedades. Neste contexto, desenvolve-se o objeto de investigação deste trabalho, que se relaciona com manifestações patológicas de edifícios antigos da baixa portuense, procurando o estudo de fenómenos anómalos ao nível das fachadas das edificações. A reabilitação surge como uma medida possível e desejável de correcção das anomalias que se verificam na generalidade dos edifícios, principalmente nos mais antigos. O processo de reabilitação no presente tempo deve ser realizado de forma sustentável, de modo a minimizar desperdícios de recursos, custos e proporcionar o máximo bem-estar aos utilizadores. O estudo destes fenómenos desenvolve-se para a recuperação das fachadas ao seu estado inicial, procurando enquadrar e incentivar para uma posterior estratégia de manutenção condicionada, baseada em inspeções e numa perspetiva preventiva de atuação, ou seja, intervindo na origem dos problemas e evitando o seu desenvolvimento, com o objetivo principal de otimizar a vida útil e os custos diferidos dos respetivos edifícios.

Given the state of degradation of the of the Portuguese buildings and the progressive deleterious effect that it reproduces in the society, it is urgent to promote its regeneration. Apart from the above, it existes in Portugal a reactive culture (sometimes delayed) for the resolution of buildings problems. This situation is, in a sense, associated with the existence of a generalist and clearly insufficient legislation, of na inoperative supervising and the inexistence (for decades) of public politics to encourage maintenance. This requires, therefore, an implementation of precautionary measures to avoid the appearance deterioration thereof . The present thesis is inserted within the rehabilitation of buildings because this activity have a fundamental importance in the performance of the edifications, which reflects the socio-economic situation of the country and the sustainable development of societies . ▼ Adherence to guideline-recommended secondary cardiovascular prevention therapy (statins and cardiac rehabilitation) has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of all-cause mortality (Statins RRR 0.25, 95% CI 0.19-0.30; Cardiac Rehabilitation RRR 0.26, 95% CI 0.14-0.36) and secondary events.1,2 Yet, ≥50% of patients discontinue statin use within 12-month after an initial prescription and completion of cardiac rehabilitation is ≤20% in Ontario.3,4 Low statin adherence and cardiac rehab completion limits patients from realizing the full benefits of therapy. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of adherence to statins for secondary prevention reported that nonadherence to statins was greater in non-white ethnicities compared to white ethnicities (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.04-1.59) with geographical variation in outcomes.5 In respect to cardiac rehabilitation, the literature suggests that non-white ethnicities are less likely to complete cardiac rehabilitation compared to white participants.6,7 However, a gap remains in our knowledge of cardiac rehabilitation completion among immigrants due to lack of outcome reporting across clinical trials. The literature suggests that immigrants have improved health profiles relative to Canadian-born patients. Specifically, immigrants with ≤10 years of Canadian residency have greater medication adherence than immigrants with >10 of Canadian residency when compared to Canadian-born participants.6-9 This thesis was a planned sub-study of the Interventions Supporting Long-Term Adherence and Decreasing Cardiovascular Events (ISLAND) randomized control trial. The ISLAND study was a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of educational reminders on adherence to guideline-recommended therapy post-myocardial infarction. Study participants were allocated in a 1:1:1 ratio to one of three groups: i) usual care, ii) educational reminders sent via post, or iii) combination post and interactive voice response educational reminders. Investigators were blinded to the allocation sequence, participant allocation, and outcome assessment. Medication adherence and completion of cardiac rehabilitation were assessed 12-months from baseline. This sub-study of ISLAND focused on participants who completed a 12-month outcome assessment with a recorded response to the following question, “Were you born a Canadian citizen?”. Immigrants experienced greater odds of statin adherence at 7-days (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.00-1.85) and 30 days (OR 1.36, 95% CI 0.96-1.94) at one-year post-myocardial infarction, after adjusting for age, diabetes, sex, and smoking status. We found no evidence that immigration status was associated with cardiac rehabilitation completion (OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.72-1.14) after adjusting for age, diabetes, sex, smoking status, average neighborhood income quintile, education, and marital status. ▼ Esta tese busca analisar como a questão da sinistralidade laboral é fundamental para a compreensão da história dos trabalhadores, especialmente durante o período da ditadura militar brasileira (1964-1985), por ser reveladora do caráter de classe de seus subsequentes governos, após a deflagração de um golpe articulado pelos setores mais conservadores da sociedade, em oposição à crescente mobilização política das classes trabalhadoras e populares, e avanço das esquerdas. A coalizão empresarial-militar no poder, em busca da concretização do ideal de “desenvolvimento com segurança”, criou mecanismos que intensificaram o processo de exploração do trabalhador e aceleraram a acumulação e concentração de capital, dando origem ao “milagre econômico brasileiro”. No entanto, como resultado da busca pelo desenvolvimento a qualquer custo, o Brasil foi considerado o “campeão mundial” de acidentes de trabalho, de acordo com a OIT, durante os anos do chamado “milagre econômico”. De modo análogo, as respostas dadas pelos governos militares frente à questão dos sinistros – as políticas de prevenção de acidentes e a assistência aos acidentados, a exemplo da reabilitação profissional – também reforçam o aspecto classista do regime. Como será analisado, durante a ditadura militar, o prevencionismo estava voltado prioritariamente para o trabalhador que, ao fim e ao cabo, era considerado ao mesmo tempo vítima e causador dos acidentes. Portanto, era preciso valorizar o trabalhador brasileiro, mas, sobretudo, reformá-lo, ensinando-o a prevenir os acidentes. Por fim, esta tese busca examinar o programa de Reabilitação Profissional, voltado prioritariamente para os segurados da Previdência Social em benefício, acidentados, e incapacitados para o trabalho. Como será discutido, este programa funcionou como um instrumento político de controle e amortecimento das tensões entre capital e trabalho, ao assumir a responsabilidade de recuperar a força de trabalho incapacitada pelo capital, através do aproveitamento de sua capacidade de trabalho residual, com vistas a retorná-la ao mercado. Nesse sentido, foram analisados os prontuários do Centro de Reabilitação Profissional de João Pessoa (CRP-JP), objetivando detalhar as etapas e funcionamento da reabilitação, e dar voz aos trabalhadores dilapidados pelo processo produtivo e em processo de reconstrução de seus corpos, objetivando a sua reciclagem para o capital. Introduktion: Fotboll är en av de mest skadedrabbade idrotterna. 70-90% av skadorna är lokaliserade i nedre extremiteter. Den vanligaste skadan är hamstringsruptur och utgör 37% av skador i nedre extremiteter. Det finns idag mycket forskning gjord på hamstringsrupturer hos manliga fotbollsspelare, men skadefrekvensen för hamstringsrupturen minskar inte. Syfte: Studiens syfte är att bidra med ökad medvetenhet och kunskap om uppkomst, rehabilitering och preventiva åtgärder på hamstringsrupturer för tränare i manliga fotbollslag. Metod: Studien har sammanställt redan befintlig litteratur om de valda område för att besvara studiens syfte. Studiens valda metod är en litteraturstudie. Resultat: (1) Uppkomst: Höghastighetssprint & förlängning. (2) Rehabilitering: Individuell konservativ behandling. (3) Preventiva åtgärder: Excentriska övningar ex: Nordic hamstrings exercise, Asklings glider. Slutsats: Mer kunskap behövs inom området, både för tränare och spelare i idrottsföreningar, och kunskapen måste presenteras på ett användbart sätt.

Introduction: Soccer is one of the most injured sports. 70-90% of the injuries are located in the lower extremities. The most common injury is hamstring strain and accounts for 37% of lower limb damage. There is a lot of research done today on hamstring strains for male soccer players, but the injury rate for hamstring strains is not diminishing. Purpose: This study wants to contribute to increased awareness and knowledge of the origin, rehabilitation and prevention of hamstring strains for coaches in male football teams. Method: The study has complied already existing literature on the chosen areas to answer the purpose of the study. The chosen method on the study is a literature study. Result: (1) Origin: High Speed Sprint & extension. (2) Rehabilitation: Individual conservative treatment. (3) Preventive measures: Eccentric exercises eg: Nordic hamstrings training, Askling Glider. Conclusion: More knowledge is needed in the field, for both athletes and coaches, and the knowledge must be presented in a useful way.

▼ Introduction: The majority of University of the Western Cape coaches believe that in most sport codes, many female and male athletes get injured at least once a season. Consequently, occurrence of injuries signifies many set-backs in any team sports. University of the Western Cape sports injury intervention and rehabilitation strategies are relatively under-developed, and have not been systematically implemented, despite their proven effectiveness. However, due to intensive training, local and national league competitions, the number of injured athletes at University of the Western Cape has increased, and so delays of athletes’ recovery are caused. Thus, it is assumed that University of the Western Cape efforts may have lack of the necessary injury precautions on prevention and rehabilitation such as proactive injury treatment, paying special attention to the therapeutic process, including other necessary mechanisms. The current study has explored facilitating factors and some of the barriers on the implementation of injury prevention strategies, and determined the effectiveness of rehabilitation within University of the Western Cape sport teams in views of athletes, coaches, and medical staff. Methods: This study used a sequential exploratory design which entailed an initial phase of quantitative data collection and analysis, followed by a phase of qualitative data collection and analysis. This study used a close-ended survey and semi-structured interviews to identify the barriers and facilitators associated with the implementation of injury prevention strategies among sports clubs at the University of the Western Cape. Results: Data were collected on the general knowledge of players and team coaches about injury prevention as well as their sources of information regarding injury prevention. Football players were 49.5% while 15.8% were basketball players in this study. Cricket players were 10.9% while rugby players were 9.9%. Sources of players’ knowledge of injury prevention included doctor/physiotherapist, coaches and the media. Sources of coaches’ knowledge of injury prevention included doctor/physiotherapist, media and seminars. Most players and coaches agreed that there is a greater chance of sustaining an injury during a competitive match than during training. Players and coaches also agree that the risk of injury is reduced by wearing preferred protective clothing and thoroughly warming up and stretching prior to training or competition. Barriers to the implementation of an injury prevention strategy include not having enough time, being too tired after training, no advice given on such techniques, the notion that nobody else does it and lack of proper equipment. Facilitators of an injury prevention strategy include availability of medical staff (doctors and physiotherapists), players’ understanding of the coach’s instructions, and injury prevention facilities at University of the Western Cape, services accessibility and quality, injury discovery and follow-up, and injury… Advisors/Committee Members: Pharaoh, Hamilton (advisor).

▼ Fall risk is a concern for a variety of clinical populations, especially in lower-limb amputees. The risk of falling during walking is increased by an individual with pathology’s diminished ability for obstacle negotiation. Virtual obstacle crossing environments offer a rehabilitation technique that is space and material efficient and may enhance obstacle crossing skill acquisition and retention though the use of task specificity, repetition, and feedback; while presenting an engaging and motivating challenge for participants. Current literature has not determined the response of an individual to virtual obstacle crossing in comparison to real environment over-ground obstacle crossing, nor whether aging influences this behavior. In a first step to determine the clinical viability of a virtual reality obstacle crossing environment, this task was tested using healthy able-bodied individuals (20 younger adults and 20 older adults) to determine an individual’s expected crossing behavior during a single session of training. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine the biomechanical obstacle-crossing behavior of an able-bodied individual within a virtual environment, (2) determine if a learning effect exists with virtual obstacle crossing, and (3) determine if the learning effect will transfer to over-ground obstacle crossing and create performance changes. Dependent variables measured were foot placement before and after the obstacles for the both the lead and trail limbs, toe/heel clearance for both limbs in the vertical and radial directions, and the peak toe and heel elevation. The hypotheses were: (1) a training effect would be observed at the end of the virtual obstacle crossing training in the form of the adoption of a safer obstacle crossing strategy in the virtual environment, (2) a safer obstacle crossing strategy in the real environment would be adopted in the post-test relative to the pre-test, and (3) the performance changes in the virtual environment would be correlated with the performance changes in the real environment, suggesting an association between motor learning in a virtual environment and transfer to a real environment task. It was also postulated that each hypothesized finding would be affected by age, with older adults showing less learning and transfer (albeit still significant) compared to the younger adults. Results indicate that participants learned to cross the virtual obstacle more safely and that change in behavior was transfer to the real environment. Further, while both age groups showed transfer to the real environment task, they differed on which limb their transfer effects applied to. The data suggest it is plausible to use virtual reality training as a way to enhance gait characteristics in the context of obstacle avoidance, potentially a leading to a novel way to reduce fall risk.; Motor learning, Obstacle crossing, Virtual reality Advisors/Committee Members: Christopher Rhea (advisor).
