▼ In June 1941, a Central Press wire story declared, “The latest and strangest recruit in Uncle Sam’s defense line-up is—the museum!” The release quoted the president of the Museum of Modern Art as saying, “Does it seem strange to you to think of a museum as a weapon in national defense?” Far from finding it strange, U.S. museums contributed to the Second World War in numerous ways. Addressing this little studied aspect of museum history, I foreground how exhibitions materialized different configurations of national belonging over the course of the war. From the Good Neighborhood of hemispheric unity, to Home Front as solidarity, to One World at peace, trends from the late 1930s—a reinvigorated sense of the museum as a social instrument, a new emphasis on narrative installations, borrowings from mass communications, and the conceptualization of material rhetoric as capable of producing intellectual, emotional, and embodied forms of knowing—inspired a flourishing of purposive, educational displays on current issues. These multisensory, affective encounters can be understood as generative acts of witnessing that affirmed institutional as well as individual civic belonging. These wartime activities did not resolve the 1930’s debates about the merits and drawbacks for museal practice of efforts to popularize museums. War conditions did, however, encourage wider spread experimentation than might otherwise have been the case. So, while the poles of opposition appeared to remain fixed, by 1946 the terrain in between had shifted with the advance of museum educators into the professional ranks; the continued incorporation of mass media techniques and technologies into exhibitions; and the desire on the part of many museum workers to demonstrate their institutions’ civic value by engaging in current affairs of importance to local, national, and even international communities. The dissertation’s conclusion, which argues that museums’ wartime work matters not only to historians but to contemporary practice as well, sets out the need to examine the war work of museums in our own time and to place current interests in sensory, affective, and narrative effects within the longer arc of museums’ cultural work. ▼ This study examines the gradual development of New Zealand identity, the process during which immigrants in the nineteenth century began to think of themselves as New Zealanders rather than as transplanted Britons or immigrants from other overseas shores, including most particularly the other Australasian colonies. It contends that this process was made manifest earlier than has hitherto been postulated. Events held earlier as breakthroughs in a sense of national identity, such as the federation of Australia in 1901, the Boer War of 1899-1902, the rugby union team’s tour of the United Kingdom and France in 1905-06 and the Gallipoli campaign in 1915, were rather outward affirmations of the identity that had already taken shape. It studies some aspects of mid-nineteenth century New Zealand history that have rarely been remarked upon in the historiography, such as an early opposition to the fledgling country becoming a penal colony and to the introduction of a uniform time for the whole of the country. These are held to have been early markers of an evolving national identity. Others, such as the role of Māori, provided a unique dimension and led to a fused national identity between the indigenous and the recent arrivals. Māori in fact provided the lead in the sport that came to be regarded as “the national game,” rugby union. Landmark legislation, especially the world-first giving the franchise to women on a national basis, is also seen as having significant impact on the evolution of national identity. While some of the legislative change was also adopted elsewhere, it was an aggregation of the changes that made New Zealand distinctive and to be seen as a “social laboratory.” While the concept of national identity may have become passé among historians, and even be seen as being misleading and applying to a few rather than to the many, post-modern thinking cannot change what happened; it can only change interpretations of events of the past. This thesis is about the British and others who migrated to New Zealand from the 1840s, how they came to see themselves as New Zealanders and the various agencies that brought about that change. Whether that was right or wrong, or whether national identity is a devalued concept, is a debate for another time and another place. This is about the making of New Zealanders. ▼ This dissertation investigates Italian national identity through the cultures produced by twentieth-century migrations to English-speaking North America. It addresses questions of human mobility and related identity crises and practices of resistance in texts that belong to and expand the framework of Italian Studies. My project adopts the interdisciplinary model of "moving thresholds," a spatial metaphor of crossing relying on anthropological, geographical, philosophical, and sociological theorizations of space and liminality. This condition of being on the threshold - as embodied by the ambiguous spaces that migrants inhabit - challenges essentialist notions of Italian national identity and encourages a dynamic and transnational approach to borders. I focus on multiple literary manifestations of liminality (geographical, ethnic, racial, generational, cultural) and on the writing space as a site of crossings. Five autobiographical and fictional novels, a memoir, and a film, produced in different geo-cultural contexts, are read as interconnected elements of a transnational network within which they participate in a boundary-breaking operation of migration and identity. Centered on Italy, U.S. and Canada as places of departure and arrival, these texts raise issues of identity relevant to the current status of Italy as a receiving nation. As such, this dissertation considers emigration and immigration, infrequently tied together in the analysis of Italian identity, as connected phenomena. Chapter 1 investigates the poetics of suspension that Italian Jewish author Ebe Cagli Seidenberg elaborated in a series of little-known novels that she wrote after leaving Rome due to the 1938 racial laws. In Chapter 2, through Frank G. Paci's works, I explore generational liminality and the challenge of re-tracing cultural traditions for Italian migrants' children in post-World War II Canada. In Chapter 3, I turn to Kym Ragusa's memoir to examine racial liminality and the author's project of cultural bridging between two Southern diasporas originating in the Mediterranean. I conclude with Amelio's Lamerica to reflect on the shifting role of Italy in current global migrations, and self-reflexively, on the writing space of my dissertation, which, by crossing disciplinary boundaries, suggests new approaches to migration in the humanities. ▼ Structuralism is a twentieth century approach or strategy which altered the conformist view of nature and reality as metaphysics and historicism do. Structuralism can be taken as a way, approach, method or philosophy of critical investigation of relationships among deep and surface levels of being and human culture in general; the modern structural world view emerged as prominent manner of study of universal rules and universality with the coming of Ferdinand de Saussure’s book Course in General Linguistics in 1916. The Prague School that included Roman Jakobson and S. Troubetzkoy are responsible for the enrichment of structural linguistics and structuralism. Noam Chomsky and Levi-Strauss have also played an important role in the further development of the structural approach and able to successfully maintain its promising influence in the Western mode of thought from semiotics to cybernetics and general systems theory. Structuralism, hence, is attributed with the undented manifestation of things in their entirety and shared elemental constitution for an underlying principle is governing their existence and interactions. This unequivocal approach, however, had been mistaken as a study of static forms or refrigerated defunct even by some well-noted thinkers like J. Derrida and M. Foucault due to their deplorable fallacies and dubious insights about the concept; contrarily structuralism is a highly systematic and inclusive of the interconnectedness of things to form an relatively definable holistic entity of small constantly transformative as well as self-regulative structures. Thus, the structural insight situates itself somewhere in the middle, dispelling the inertially formalists and chaos theorists; and philosophizing that things are chaotic forms or formal chaos. Thereof, the painstaking conceptual framework of structuralism has been discussed and analyzed in chapter three, following the introductory chapter and review of related literature respectively. In chapter three the concept of structuralism is discussed in detail fully understood to avoid the popular misconceptions including that of “post-structuralism”. Chapter four lines up next to analyze the three focus materials’ (the Kebra Nagast, Tobbiya and Dertogada) historical, social, political, and literary structural configurations, particularly accompanied with Northrop Frye’s structural theory of recurrent formations. Thus, the analysis part of this research paper— synthesizing literature, philosophy and politics—discusses the selected materials’ structural interconnection and similitude. And finally, the conclusion is rendered in chapter five to elicit the major points that have been constructed in the entire chapters, especially the fourth one. ▼ New Zealand national identity has dominated the art of Nigel Brown, emerging in various guises throughout his career. This thesis examines his work from his school drawings through to his development into a mature, established and significant artist. The introduction reflects the role of New Zealand national identity within the context of Nigel Brown‟s oeuvre, providing an overview of his style and subject matter and concludes with a biographical summary. Chapter One considers Brown‟s origins: his upbringing, school-boy art and art school days, through to his first solo exhibition in 1972. This section of my thesis also includes a discussion of his key educators including Ray Ericson, Fred Graham, Garth Tapper, Pat Hanly, Colin McCahon and Robert Ellis. Chapter Two examines the artist‟s nationalist symbolism and draws attention to the way in which Brown‟s visual language speaks to a predominantly New Zealand audience. This chapter identifies and clarifies key symbols from his oeuvre: the fern, black dog, black-singlet-clad bloke, James K. Baxter as well as a cast of other disparate "characters", spiritual symbolism and McCahon. Chapter Three considers notions of belonging and explores living in Aotearoa, New Zealand, as a feature within Brown‟s art practice. Included is a discussion of his uncomfortable position within the New Zealand art scene where, despite the impediment of occasional cultural snobbery, the artist nevertheless achieved a significant reputation. The chapter also takes into account traditions of the figured landscape, the depiction of rural and suburban New Zealand, as well as this country‟s historical and cultural makeup from Pākehā, Māori and Pacific perspectives. In Chapter Four Brown‟s response to aspects of politics, social change and protest are considered. Brown is an artist with a strong social conscience and this chapter reflects on the diverse range of issues and events he tackled in his artwork such as the Vietnam War, suburban neurosis, The Springbok Tour rugby protests, pacifism, nuclear arms, feminism, human rights and environmentalism. When pulled together, the diverse threads of Brown‟s oeuvre explored in each of the above chapters, display an over-riding sense of New Zealand national identity. ▼ This thesis shows how Russia’s culture can be construed as a hybrid space because it is both central and peripheral, not simply East or West. From a cultural point of view, the center and the periphery were and are a kind of slippery palimpsest throughout the nation's history since it was (and is) both colonizer and colonized. The Russian elite’s obsession with the West and efforts to westernize itself can be interpreted as postcolonial since it was intellectually and culturally colonized on the part of European intellectuals beginning in the early eighteenth century. Educated Russians exhibited many of the features of a postcolonial society such as mimicry that becomes mockery, psychological displacement, sustained preoccupations with cultural authenticity, the search for an alternate national identity, and the adopting of the colonizer's language as its primary modes of discourse. I show that Russia shares these critical postcolonial features with other, similar societies, especially as reflected in both literary and non-literary texts. The discourse I counter is one that claims that Russians were simply aping the West in and unthinking way that reflected some ephemeral fashion of the day. The general denigration and neglect of Russian traditions on the part of Russians was, I claim, a response to the West's orientalizing of the country, the primary mode of its cultural colonization. However, the Russian authors I examine also adopted what were considered positive Oriental features that they pressed into service for the construction of an ideal national identity. The educated members of its society subsequently sought to become members of a “civilized” Western fraternity of nations. This makes Russia unique because it was both center and periphery, colonizer and colonized. ▼ ‘Ecological Touchstones of Our Identity’ explores the ways in which the language of New Zealand’s landscapes have been transformed by colonisation as New Zealand undergoes transition into a post-colonial era. This thesis identifies how three uniquely native New Zealand landscapes, the Beach, the Swamp and the Bush, have become lost to New Zealanders, both physically and conceptually, through the gradual transitions of time and contested histories. Although these landscapes are perceived within New Zealand’s culture as uniquely native to New Zealand, their true nature is somehow lost on many. Such unique landscapes coalesce into one very important landscape - the transect of the lowland forest - which has been all but lost from the fabric of our landscapes. This thesis uses a methodological approach wherein a range of dualities are explored in opposition to each other. The concept of biculturalism between Māori and Pākehā; the orientation between the vertical and horizontal, the gaze versus the object; wetland and bushland versus pastureland; and, most importantly, the perceived duality of nature versus culture. This latter point will be challenged through the theory and design concepts presented in this thesis. The final design outcome deals with the practicalities of generating a strong knowledge base of eco-sourcing and regeneration of national importance by creating a functioning seedbank between the two sites selected: the Museum of New Zealand -Te Papa Tongarewa and Lake Waiwiri (Lake Papaitonga). The vision is to regenerate the lowland forest transect between Lake Waiwiri and the coastal edge back into the functioning ecosystem once present, while structuring this regeneration to act as a cultural tool for strengthening New Zealand's sense of ecological cultural awareness, and thereby, identity. The role that landscape architecture and architecture play within this system of regeneration is critically explored through form and conceptual process, cumulating to a scheme which presents the educational opportunity of integrating these two different sites into one functioning ecosystem of regeneration. ▼ This thesis investigates the negotiated interpretations of “self” amongst 2nd generation Dutch-Moroccan and Dutch-Turkish individuals. It thus enhances our understanding of a national identity that is both cohesive as well as susceptible to the multicultural dimensions the modern nation-state inhabits. As part of a theoretical evaluation of multiculturalism, the focus is on the relationship between nationalism and multiculturalism, and between acknowledging the civic and ethnic dimensions that embody and unite the national “self”. The thesis unpicks how and in which ways these elements influence the accommodation, the respect and inclusion of the ethno-culturally diverse “other”. Multiculturalism theory tends to overlook this important symbiosis which might explain the current, widespread public and political stance that no longer regards multiculturalism as a viable, sustainable approach to diversity. The Netherlands is an interesting case study not least because it was portrayed as the multicultural example and yet illuminates a gradual, yet devastating and definite abandonment of multiculturalism. This was symbolized by the assassination of film maker and Islam critic Theo van Gogh whose murderer, a young, educated, Dutch-Moroccan man, claimed to have killed in the name of Islam. The main analysis involves data from thirteen interviewees conducted with seven Dutch- Moroccans and six Dutch-Turks. Such 2nd generation migrants have seen their “Dutchness” contested and/or questioned despite the fact that their upbringing, education and daily life has largely occurred in the Netherlands. Other forms of data collection include a small scale online survey, a pilot participant observation session, and conducted interviews with experts of relevant organisations. This hybrid mélange of data illuminates methodological issues of researching a target group that is highly “researched”. The thesis commences with a contextual chapter that illuminates changing (inter)national public and political discourse on integration and offers a critical overview of Dutch immigration and integration policies (chapter 4). The Dutch approach of “pillarized multiculturalism” illuminates a key flaw in the practical implementation of multiculturalism where the focus on bonding rather than bridging accentuated a rigidified, “pillarized” segmentation of cultural difference according to social categories rather than individual integrity. As a consequence of these policies, an embedded notion of categorical “differentness” is sustained, and is reflected in Dutch-Moroccan and Dutch-Turkish individuals’ identification processes of “self”. In this regard, the role of culture is highlighted in two distinct ways that acts a) as a tool that serves Dutch-Moroccans and Dutch-Turks to negotiate an individualistic, civic, inclusive “Dutchness” as part of their religious and ethno-cultural affiliations and b) as an essentialist force that embodies a “culturalist” Dutch identity that is ethno-ancestrally exclusive (Chapter 5, 6 and 7). ▼ Over three studies (qualitative, survey, and experimental research) in two industrialised countries with different cultural and historical backgrounds, Korea and Australia, the thesis provides evidence that people’s perceptions of national history play an important role in constructing national identity. The thesis showed that people’s national identification takes on different meanings due to a national difference in history of Korea and Australia, and because of individual differences in perceptions of their nation’s past history, especially the extent to which their national history was seen to have a coherent continuous structure. In order to examine more richly textured psychological meaning of national history, the thesis examined people’s perception of culturally specific contents of their national history, and established that there are multiple narratives by which people understand their national history in both Korea and Australia. Two main historical narratives were national progress (narrating political or economic developments) and cultural contrast (narrating conflicts between the tradition and modernity) narratives. The national progress narrative, however, took a different form in Korea and Australia: economic development was emphasized in Korea, whereas social progress was emphasized in Australia. Moreover, these historical narratives play a role in the construction of national identification. That is, different historical narratives encourage people to pay attention to different aspects of national history, leading them to construct their national identity differently. It was revealed that the evaluation of social and economic changes contributed to national identification positively in the national progress narrative, but negatively in the cultural contrast narrative. Finally, the thesis demonstrated that people’s perception of national history is susceptible to situational cues to some extent, resulting in situational variability in identity construction. People’s historical perceptions could be manipulated with an exposure to different historical narratives, which in turn affected the process of identity construction. These findings shed light on the important and dynamic role of people’s perception of national history in the construction of national identity.

▼ Abstract The main purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between junior high school students' attitudes of political symbols and national identity in Kaohsiung. Principal methods used in this study are literature review, questionnaire survey, correlation method, analysis of variance and regression analysis. Questionnaires of this study were sent to 600 third graders from 25 junior high school in the greater Kaohsiung area. Valid questionnaires were secured from 545 third graders. Six principal study results, which were obtain from data analysis in this study, are stated as follows: 1. The political symbols attitude of junior high school students in the greater Kaohsiung area tended to positive and active. 2. Junior high school students in the greater Kaohsiung area of national identity tended to identify with Taiwan is very strong. 3. There are significant differences in the attitude of political symbols among junior high school students of different backgrounds. 4. There are significant differences in the tendency of national identity among junior high school students of different backgrounds. 5. There are significant positive correlation of in the greater Kaohsiung area among junior high school students' attitudes of political symbols and national identities. 6. Junior high school students' of political symbols attitude in regard to national identity have predictive power. Finally, according to the study results, the following specific recommendations: 1. To select suitable teaching materials, and to make arrangements for appropriate courses. 2. To guide students' positive political attitude, and to encourage students to participate in the democratic political affairs. 3. To encourage students to actively participate in school activities and to be school cadres. 4. To focus on the effectiveness of the formal curriculum, and to help the potential curriculum at the same time. 5.To implement family education, and to establish a good parent-child relationship. 6. We can with the children care about public issues and foster their civic literacy. 7. To revised syllabuses, and to upgrade junior high school students toward national identity. 8. To set out a pragmatic and open-minded review of the principle about politically sensitive issues.
