The dissertation examines the role of Polish Catholic domestic workers employed in middle-class Jewish households during the interwar period and the ways that the relationships that developed in the domestic realm influenced decisions to seek or provide aid during the Holocaust. It argues that the relationships that sometimes formed in the domestic realm caused Polish Catholic domestic workers to see their Jewish employers as belonging to their own community of obligation and to sometimes then aid them during the Nazi persecution. In addition, this work examines how middle-class Polish culture was transmitted to Jewish children by their acculturated parents, sometimes via the family's Polish Catholic maid and the ways this maid also familiarized her charges with Polish Catholic peasant culture. This dissertation asserts that this familiarity with Polish culture and the hybrid identities the children of these households sometimes formed was useful in later allowing them to pass as Catholic Poles on the so-called Aryan side if the opportunity was present during the Nazi Occupation period. The dissertation is comprised of two parts. The first examines the prewar period to explore how Polish Catholic women from the countryside made their niches within urban Jewish households, how Polish middle class culture was transmitted to children in acculturated Jewish homes, and to examine how these children then further developed their hybridic Polish Jewish identities while in the public realm, away from the control of their parents and caregivers. The second part of the dissertation examines the initial responses of the domestic workers and their Jewish employers to the Nazi invasion of Poland and the ghettoization of the Jewish population, how it was decided to place Jewish children and families into hiding outside the ghetto, and case studies of children hidden with their former Polish caregivers.

▼ This study examines Polish-Jewish relations during the pivotal eight months between the declaration of Polish Independence on November 11, 1918 and the formal re-establishment of the Polish state by its recognition by the Allied and Associated Powers at the Paris Peace Conference on June 28, 1919. The thesis explores the background to Polish-Jewish relations in the years immediately preceding the period under investigation in order to place the events in their political and socio-economic context. The key to the present study is a detailed examination of the controversial anti-Jewish outrages that occurred in the disputed Russo-Polish-Ukrainian borderlands, namely in Lwów in November 1918, and at Pińsk in April 1919. It is important not only to scrutinise these events in detail, but furthermore to place them in their full international perspective. The direct result was the imposition of a Minorities Treaty upon Poland, which was largely drafted during the final months of the Peace Conference. Polish anti-Jewish violence was not the only factor that influenced the Allies gathered at Versailles, yet the peacemakers felt compelled to treat Poland as a special case. The Treaty further strained the interdependent links between Poles and Jews, both in Poland and the west, as the dominant group saw it as an unfair limitation on its sovereignty. Polish resentment at the perceived influence of ‘international Jewry’ further heightened tensions between the two, yet the drafting of the Minorities Treaty was emphatically not as a result of the ‘Jewish lobby’ (which was in fact divided) that had gathered in the French capital in an attempt to further Jewish demands in both Eastern Europe and Palestine. The damage done to Polish-Jewish relationships during the crucial period of 1918-1919 not only strained interaction between those groups in the months covered by the thesis, but also exacerbated the Jewish ‘problem’ during the course of the Second Polish Republic and beyond.

▼ Although, with the turn in the discipline since the 1980s, musicologists no longer assume their role to be that of arbiters of “good music”, the instruction of Boethius – “Look to the highest of the heights of heaven” – has continued to motivate musicological inquiry. By contrast, music which is popular but perceived as “bad” has generated surprisingly little interest. This dissertation looks at Polish post-socialist music through the lenses of musical phenomena that came to prominence after socialism collapsed but which are perceived as controversial, undesired, shameful, and even dangerous. They run the gamut from the perceived nadir of popular music to some works of the most renowned contemporary classical composers that are associated with the suffix -polo, an expression that comes from disco polo, the first genre that came to prominence after socialism collapsed and is commonly associated with poor taste and a business-inspired aesthetic compromise. Combining methods used in ethnomusicology and musicology, my study is guided by the questions: How does music become “bad” and why? What does it tell us about ongoing cultural discourses and social cleavages in Polish society after the fall of socialism? The dissertation is structured around three case studies: (i) disco polo, (ii) Polish hip hop and hip-hopolo, and (iii) application of the term sacropolo to music with religious content, with an emphasis on rubikopolo. They are followed by analysis of patterns and schemes of silencing (as defined by Thiesmeyer 2003) experienced by these musical phenomena in confrontation with the dominant discourse in contemporary Poland, exposing the double and disguised nature of such silencing. The study is preceded by analysis of the cultural policy of the socialist state, which has profound implications for the functioning of music in Poland after its fall and provides a platform for addressing ideas about vision and mission of Polish culture, concepts regarding music and cultural hierarchies, assumptions regarding folk and popular music, and the myth of Poland. The music discussed in this dissertation was linked to a specific socio-economic context. With its change, the prominence and relevance of music altered. Moreover, all of these controversial musical phenomena challenged the organizational and conceptual framework of music making in post-socialist Poland (which stems from the previous system and has been influenced by some nineteenth century ideas) and clashed with official discourses. Although reasons behind their silencing were multiple and varied from case to case, they all interfere with the official narration about the post-socialist transformation, which pictured the current transition to capitalism and merging with Western Europe as the best and only option. They bring a different perspective to Poland’s relationship to the West, both actual and desired, and emphasize a set of values alternative to the one promoted by the dominant discourse. ▼ This study deals with the four-composer Polish musical association, Young Polish Composers' Publishing Company, which became commonly known as the group Poland in Music. Young Poland in Music is considered by Polish and non-Polish music historians to be the signal inaugurator of modernism in Polish music. However, despite this most important attribution, the past eighty-odd years have witnessed considerable confusion over the perceptions of: 1) exactly who constituted the publishing company, 2) why it was founded, 3) what the intentions of its members were, and 4) the general reception its members' music received. This paper addresses and resolves this multiple confusion. Chapter I presents an introductory survey of the political, socio/cultural, and musical developments of Poland between 1772 and c1900, the period of the Polish Partitions through the beginnings of the "Young Poland" era. Chapter II presents a discussion of the facts surrounding the founding of the publishing company, as well as a discussion of the eighty-odd years of historical misinterpretations that have developed about the composers' company and its relationship to "Young Poland in Music." Chapter III discusses the interpersonal relationships of the composers and other persons directly involved with them and their company, and the impact that these relationships had on the publishing company. Additionally, the chapter brings into focus the specific relationships between the musicologist, Adolf Chybiński, the company, and its individual members. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the actual publishing activities of the company. Chapter IV examines the three concerts sponsored by the company and their critical receptions in Warsaw and Berlin through the surviving reviews and comments of leading contemporary music critics, the concert participants, the composers' close colleagues, and the composers themselves. Finally, Chapter V contains a brief discussion of the music presented on the three concerts, characterizing the works within the context of their initial critical reception. Youth culture and youth-oriented subcultures have long captured the attention of social scientists, popular media, and concerned parents alike. Yet, even as the majority of punk's 1970's pioneers and the counterculturalists of the 1960's have long left community and defining elements of style behind, we still only know little about how individuals' adult lives might nonetheless be informed by involvements such as these. My dissertation draws upon 44 face-to-face in-depth interviews with individuals who transitioned out of straightedge - a clean-living youth scene that has been associated with punk and hardcore music since the early 1980's based upon a lifetime pledge to abstain from intoxication. Interview data show former straightedge adherents believe their time as straightedge, an affiliation they have all categorically relinquished, has nonetheless laid bases for the ways they currently see themselves within the world and the lives they profess to be leading in their post-straightedge years. Rather than being part of an exploratory period that ends as many scholarly understandings of both youth subculture and adult transition indicate, findings suggest that elective youth identities may instead significantly influence how the transition to adulthood is negotiated and how adulthood is configured in the longer-term, which, arguably marks among the larger changes in the process of aging since the middle 20th Century. Deeper in this vein, where it is generally understood that individuals are exploring greater amounts of identities, consumption phases, and communities in the course of their lives relative to prior generations, there has been surprisingly little inquiry into the potential significance of those that are relinquished. Here, findings indicate that retrospective interpretive inquiry into relinquished identities can shed unique light upon elective cultural affiliation, both as a facet of subjective life history and with regard to what larger identification nodes can potentially mean.

▼ By 1900 domestication was a promising, if somewhat vexed, subject in biology. Volumes had been written about domestication, but little serious scientific inquiry was directed toward the phenomenon. Expertise lay with practical men, primarily breeders and fanciers. The bulk of scientific commentary on domestication came from anthropologists who derived theories about man’s evolutionary past and future prospects based on an analogy with domesticated creatures. To an experimental ethos emerging near the turn of the 20th century, one increasingly dependent upon animals kept and bred in the laboratory, the available knowledge of domestication seemed inadequate, with its practical orientation and use of metaphor, analogy, and speculation. A small number of researchers working at various points along the fluid border between biology and psychology sought to reestablish the scientific understanding of domestication on the basis of experimental results. I examine these latter efforts to determine how these investigators constructed new experimental understandings of domestication from the point of planning the experiments to interpreting the results and how these conceptions coincided with the widespread cultural resonances of domestication. Historians of science frequently correlate the experimental turn in biology and psychology not only with new standards of evidence, but also with new claims about disciplinary identity, expertise, and objectivity. Domestication researchers, however, failed to produce a substantially new, clear, objective, and widely accepted explanation of the phenomenon by midcentury. I argue that these efforts did not achieve the purported goals of experimental research, generally, not for any failure in the design of the experiments themselves, but for the continued cultural relevance of domestication, expressed in analogies, metaphors, and the wisdom of experience with domesticated animals, that corresponded with the values, social preoccupations, and professional circumstances of individual investigators. I argue, further, that the experience of domestication researchers demands a reevaluation of the impact of the experimental turn in biobehavioral research in the early years of the 20th century. This extends a recent historiogaphic tradition that recognizes continuities between pre-experimental and experimental work to include the relations of experimental scientists and nonscientific experts, the value of experience, and the use of analogy within the laboratory and without. ▼ Over the past 60 years, India has undergone immense political, economic, and social changes, which have led to its emergence as a global economic power and regional military power. During this period, the population has surged, growing from 233 million to 1.2 billion people, making India the second most populous nation in the world. In the course of this change, there have been key indicators of medical progress, such as rising life expectancy and a falling infant mortality rate. Another striking indicator, specifically in the area of medical technology, is the fact that India in 2006 was a net exporter of HIV medications to dozens of countries around the globe, earning a reputation as the pharmacist of the developing world. Although many books and papers have been written about the emergence of the country's economy and military, little has been written on how it has been able to achieve its leadership in medical technology. This thesis, 'A History of Medical Technology in Postcolonial India: 1947-1991', is the first major study examining the development of medical technology in India in the period directly following colonial rule. The period covered in this research is crucial because it highlights the evolution and impact of medical technology in postcolonial India, leading up to, but excluding, the free-market reforms enacted by the Indian government in 1991. This thesis will also illustrate the impact diffusion had on the evolution of medical technology. Most importantly, this thesis introduces a new concept appropriate to understanding India's trajectory in this period: the medical technology complex. It will be shown that this complex consists of different groups working toward an aligned objective. It is not the point of this thesis to characterize the medical technology complex in a positive light or a negative one. Its primary concern is to demonstrate through historical evidence that this construct grew throughout the twentieth century and still exists today.

▼ This thesis studies five mainstream British weekly magazines: 'Time and Tide', the 'Nation and Athenaeum', the 'Spectator', the 'Listener', and the 'New Statesman'. It explores how these magazines reviewed, discussed and analysed modernist literature over an eighteen-year span, 1920-37. Over this period, and in these magazines, the concept of modernism developed. Drawing on work by philosopher Ian Hacking, this research traces how the idea of modernism emerged into the public realm. It focuses largely on the book reviews printed in these magazines, texts that played an important and underappreciated role in negotiations between modernist texts and the audience of these magazines. Chapter 1, on 'Time and Tide', covers a period from the magazine's inception in 1920 to 1926, and draws particularly on Catherine Clay's work on this magazine. It discusses the genre of 'weekly review' that this new magazine attempted to join, and the cultural place of modernism in the early 1920s. Chapter 2, on the 'Nation and Athenaeum', covers Leonard Woolf's literary editorship (1923-30), under the ownership of J. M. Keynes, and makes use of Keynes's archive at King's College, Cambridge, and Woolf's at the University of Sussex. Chapter 3, on the 'Spectator', covers Evelyn Wrench's editorship (1925-32), and explores the relationship between this magazine, ideologies of conservatism, and modernism. Chapter 4, on the 'Listener', focuses on the magazine's publication of new poetry, including an extraordinary 1933 supplement that printed W. H. Auden's 'The Witnesses'. This work revolves around Janet Adam Smith, literary editor in these years, and draws on Smith's archive at the National Library of Scotland as well as the BBC archives at Caversham. Chapter 5, on the 'New Statesman' in the 1930s under new editor Kingsley Martin, explores a period when modernism was more widely recognized, and pays particular attention to a short text by James Joyce printed in 1932, 'From a Banned Writer to a Banned Singer'.

▼ This dissertation contends that the politics of ideology within political parties are crucial in determining the substance and early prospects for success of ideological challenges seeking to transform the state system in representative democracies. The focus of this dissertation is the politics of the party; that is to say, the objective of studying the wider conjuncture is to illuminate the often complex effects of intra-party politics on the state system, and vice versa. The politics of ideology within the party help to determine the timing, tactics and content of transitions in the state system. Moreover, the initial intra-party purchase of ideas may preclude transitions, in spite of sociological forces indicating such realignments to be viable. ❧ The dissertation presents a model of intra-party ideological transitions, periodized according to the institutional focus and strategic aims of challengers at three stages—referred to here as the challenge, the consolidation, and the ascendency. At each of these stages, the effects of ideas are ‘coupled’ with those of institutions at three levels—the high political, the grassroots, and among the wider electorate—and the interaction between them can be drawn out in narratives which map our model onto various cases. ❧ Owing to events and institutions outside the party and the huge internal variation between parties, each transition will be substantively unique and its constituent stages will differ in duration. Yet it is proposed that our model’s three stages are transferable analytically across ideological transitions in ‘establishment parties’—especially such parties that are physically large and ideologically diverse, but also smaller, more programmatic, parties, so long as their leaders subscribe to constitutional rules and they are ideationally linked through their core principles to the broader societal ideology. This second attribute separates the ‘establishment party’, which this dissertation concentrates exclusively on, from the merely constitutionalist party, for which certain of the model’s facets may potentially require revision. ❧ Three literatures which overlook the party as the initial site of transition in the process of political and ideological change are examined. Realignment theorists and their critics have traditionally concentrated on electoral churning, rather than on the social forces at work in driving ‘switchers’ into the opposing camp, or, to complicate matters further, the changing electoral ideologies expounded by parties, which may be a cause, an effect, or epiphenomenal to the realignment of voters. Even when political scientists do move beyond the surface and quantifiable symptoms of political change, it is argued that they neglect the vital ways in which the societal tectonics that precede and produce upheavals are mediated by the party-as-institution. ❧ Historical institutionalists, meanwhile, have made significant contributions to our understanding of political development and institutional functionality, but their analyses are limited… Advisors/Committee Members: Sellers, Jefferey M. ▼ This thesis contributes to debates on the changes and continuities affecting women's lives in mid-twentieth century Britain, examining the factors that shaped what was possible for women coming of age in the immediate post-war years. Within the developed historiography on the coalfields, women's histories have been limited to broad overviews of women's social history. This thesis enriches these overviews by offering a close reading of a small cohort of women's composure of their life narratives. It thus promotes an understanding of a fuller 'life history', as affected by changes with the onset of the welfare state and the impact of community on women's well-being. The thesis contributes to the growing body of literature combatting the silencing of women in the male dominated historiography on industrial working-class communities. Specifically, it does so in the context of the interplay and tensions between a community and its individuals, and the impact of that community on women's life trajectories. The south Wales community of the Rhondda is utilised as a case study. Culturally and economically significant, the Rhondda has been the focus of much of the historiography on the coalfields. I conclude that the impact of gender ideology and community structures on Rhondda women's experiences were diverse, complex and contradictory. In composing their life narratives, the cohort negotiated aspects of their lives experienced as poor, unchallenging and unsatisfying. Rhondda's poverty had a detrimental impact on the women's lives. Relationships between community values and individuals emerged as structures enabling and constraining the potential of women in the cohort to live their lives freely and satisfactorily. The pressure for respectability within the community was a major constraining force. Early experiences were influential in how they conducted themselves in adulthood. Yet evidence of happiness is present, particularly around experiences of married life, which presents as an antidote to the frequently pessimistic discourses surrounding the debates on companionate marriage. Utilising their own experiences of struggle and disadvantage, many of the cohort emphasised their support for increased opportunities for subsequent generations of Rhondda women.

▼ This dissertation looks at black girlhood in the nation’s capital in the twentieth century and argues that black girls and women living in Washington, D.C. used organizational and social spaces as a platform to imagine the possibilities of black girlhood. The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, and the ritual of the debutante ball, which have not been compared together in one text, are the social spaces at the core of this study. Sources such as organizational papers, local and school newspapers, published oral histories, social scientific studies, and photographs show that these spaces functioned simultaneously at critical sites of uplift and civil rights work, education, pleasure, and leisure. Black girls and women used their participation in girls’ organizations to assert black girls’ right to a happy and healthy childhood. Viewing black girlhood through the lens of organizations reveals both what black women thought about and desired for black girls, as well how girls used these spaces to for their own joys and pleasures. Rather than treating ideas about and representations of black girls separately from black girls’ lived experiences, as previous histories of black girlhood have done, this dissertation bridges both perspectives. Taking this two-pronged approach shows how girls’ organizations were mutually beneficial to black girls and women. Although there were overlaps in membership and participation between the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital, and the debutante ball, each took a unique approach in catering to black girls’ needs and shaping the narrative of black girlhood. Organizational leaders used offered services and programming such as residences, camps, charm and beauty clinics, and etiquette lessons to develop girls and young women who participated in their program spiritually, morally, emotionally, and physically. At the same time, black girls contended with a desire to build friendships and romantic relationships, navigated the development of their personal values and physical bodies, and asserted themselves as citizens of Washington and the United States more broadly. At times, organizational leaders and young participants had the same vision of girlhood, and at other times did not. But for both parties, the YWCA, the Girl Scouts, and debutante ball served were spaces where they could develop this vision. This project contributes to what we know about black girls with its discussion of friendships, interpersonal relationships, and girls’ relationships with their physical bodies. Whether these relationships brought joy and sense of belonging, or were anxiety-ridden, organizations played an important role in fostering them. “That charm of all girlhood” also expands how we view middle-class black women’s leadership in social organizations. They were not solely concerned about social status, but were committed to cultivating black girls into successful black women. ▼ This study is an analysis of Mazabuka and Kalomo, two small towns in Zambia. The study presents a historical baseline study in order to outline the growth of the towns. These small urban centres have experienced growth from the time they were created and it is the nature and quality of this growth that needs to be understood. The functional aspects of the towns are examined by considering the expansion of the most prominent economic sector which is the retail sector from the time they were established to the time of the study. The role of Mazabuka and Kalomo in terms of rural-urban linkages is also presented in the study with the transport sector and movement of shoppers. The study examines the growth or lack of it in terms of existing policies in the country. A survey was carried out in the two towns and data was collected using interview schedules to obtain information from shoppers, central business district entities, seasonal workers and transporters found in the two towns. Structured interviews were held with council officials and other key informants in both towns. The findings from the study show that the urban growth has been in phases and has inadvertently been affected by government policies. The study findings also show that the rural population still depends on the nearest small town and distance is not a deterrent as there are few alternatives in the rural areas. This indicates that small urban areas are important for rural development. Government policies such as decentralization should focus on small town development in order to develop rural areas. The presence of large private sector activities will increase the rate of growth and the initial investment is needed to drive small town growth. This study found that liberalization of the economy led to an initial downturn in retail activities but this was overturned after a period. As a result Mazabuka and Kalomo have both experienced gradual but increased investments in the retail sector. This investment can be in the agricultural or retail sectors as the study findings revealed in the case of Mazabuka. In Kalomo, where the level of capital investment has historically been low, the growth has been slower. This is an indication that there are differences in functional complexities and capacities which will need to be taken into consideration during the process of decentralization. The increasing importance of small individually owned retail outlets in small towns was also studied and noted as was the importance of the private sector in transportation. On the whole, the study presents unprecedented geographical and historical baseline aspects of urbanization in Zambia. In analysing the evolution of Mazabuka and Kalomo, the study outlines the process of colonial urban development and explains the impact on this historical context on current developments.
