▼ Non-profit organizations participating in social activities becomes more and more important, and NPOs compensate for the deviations and inadequate matters that the public sector and private sector are unable to provide. Therefore, whether in education and culture, arts, social welfare or community construction, NPOs will give assistance, and promote the development of civil society. However, some well-known NPOs have been created many scandals. The low operational efficiency and disadvantages of behaviors hit the public trust from the general public. Thus, this study explore whether the donorsâ approval of accountability would affect their donation willingness to NPOs. The study collected paper questionnaires 168 and 164 online questionnaires (a total of 308 valid questionnaires). The purposes of this study are: first, to explore the differences about the donorsâ demographic variables to the donorsâ approval of accountability . Second, to explore the correlation between the donorsâ approval of accountability and donation willingness. Third, to provide specific recommendations about the future direction of sustainable development to NPOs. The empirical results show : First, in the demographic variables, the donorsâ contribution purposes and education to the approval of accountability are significant different. Second, the correlation between the donorsâ approval of accountability and donation willingness is significantly positive. Third, the accountability acts of legal norms, performance evaluation, citizen participation, information disclosure and organizational goals are all significantly correlated to donation willingness. Compared with each dimension, âinformation disclosureâ is the most significantly correlated. Then, the study makes the following recommendations: First, continuingly accountable, in order to maintain the sustainability of NPOs. Second, maintain the transparency of the operation, and promote the self-discipline. Third, put different marketing plan to different donors. Forth, keep the spirit of the NPOsâ principle and provide services that meet the current needs of the community. ▼ This study uses the findings from in-depth semi-structured qualitative interviews with senior specialist managers of large corporations in Australia to discover the factors influencing decisions they make in providing support to nonprofit organisations (NPO’s) in Australia. The literature reveals there has been an increase in the corporate assistance to NPO’s in Australia, and that this corporate giving has changed over time. Corporate support of NPO’s has metamorphosed from philanthropy (giving without expectation of a return), to “strategic philanthropy” (giving where there is a direct link of benefits between the organisation and society), to being subsumed into what is currently termed corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs (having a strategic focus to objectives and activities that fulfil stakeholder expectations). With the increasing professionalism of corporate giving demonstrated by these changes, one key actor is emerging as significant in the giving behaviour of large organisations – the manager primarily responsible for implementing NPO support decisions. This specialist manager is termed the “corporate giving manager” in this study, and the literature demonstrates the influences on the decisions they make remain largely unexplored. This research addresses the question of “What are the influences on the decisions made by the corporate giving manager in their management role of developing and implementing nonprofit support decisions?”, and this is answered through the creation and presentation of a conceptual model of the influences on the decisions of the corporate giving manager. The dominant influences were identified through a thematic content analysis of interviews with twenty six corporate managers, with the sample size being determined on the concept of theoretical saturation. One major contribution of this research is that the analysis of these interviews reveals that the prime influence on the giving managers’ decision making is the stakeholder focus of their company’s CSR programs. This focus typically is predominately either internal, or external or a balanced combination of both. The analysis demonstrates that the corporate giving manager is the nexus in a web of corporate support, and that their role, and their influence on CSR policy is partly determined by the evolution of CSR in their company. Other contributions of this research include providing new insights into the development of NPO support decisions of the giving managers, and therefore their corporations. Corporate giving managers use their perception of corporate motive to determine NPO fit with corporate objectives. This determination, combined with the influence of other factors, termed “micro-influences”, such as the geographic relevance of NPOs, the need for employee volunteering, the staff connectedness with an NPO and managerial values, assist the giving manager in making NPO support decisions. ▼ Currently the sub urban (Satoyama) forests in Japan have become the important areas to restore management activities. Historically these forests derived multiple benefits to the environment and society. Before 1950-60s these forests were managed in a sustainable way to produce wood for fuels, leaf-litter for organic fertilizer etc and after abrupt shift to fossil fuel in 1950-60s these forests remained underused. In the last two decades thousands of volunteer groups have been formed for the conservation and restoration management of sub urban (Satoyama) forests. Recently, Japan government has also taken initiatives to manage the sub urban forests in a sustainable way to combat global warming in the light of low carbon society initiative. Therefore, determining strategy for sustainable management of sub urban forests can play a significant role in achieving the goal of sustainability. In this study our aim was to formulate a strategy for the sustainable management of sub urban forest in Japan and to ascertain the potential contribution of these forests to the environmental sustainability in their vicinages. The semi-natural sub urban (Satoyama) forest of Oaota, in Kashiwa, Chiba Japan was selected for the study with legal permission from non-profit organization (NPO). The sub urban (Satoyama) forest spans over a total area of 42 hectares, of which, only 4 hectares area is under NPO management. Within the NPO managed forest areas we identified Plantation Forest (PF) site and Natural Forest (NF) site and two quadratic plots were set in each site to get the forest inventory data. We measured sectional diameters at 2 m intervals starting from 0.3 m from the ground by diameter tap alongside the total canopy height of trees using the Criterion RD 1000. Lengths and diameters of branches were also measured from photographs by using ArcGIS 10.0. We then used these data to obtain existing biomass stock (in the year 2010) of the forest. Afterwards we cut 16 trees of four dominant species viz., Quercus serrata, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Cryptomeria japonica, and Carpinus tschonoskii and 139 stem discs of 5 cm thick were collected for the growth ring analysis by WinDENDRO Reg2002b software. According to our finding, most of the trees in this forest are 50 years in age (approximately). Based on the early growth pattern of the dominant species, Quercus serrata and Carpinus tschonoskii exhibited higher biomass yields in the Oaota forest followed by Chamaecyparis obtusa and Cryptomeria japonica. As per our biomass calculation using Mitscherlich growth model, the total wood biomass of Oaota forest in 2010 was 4994 m3 which will reach 6654.27 m3 by 2020 adding 1660.27 m3 biomass to the stock; under the assumed 2 % mortality rate. We suggested that 80 % of the yield over this period be felled after keeping aside 20 % for estimation error or future risk, may be one of the options for sustainable forest management. ▼ The raison dâêtre for non-profit organizations (NPO) is to promote its ideas in hoping to change the society. NPOs pursue the goals that benefit the public, and communicate and market its missions through various channels, thus can be considered as a branch of âsocial marketing.â However, as a member of the mundane world, however supreme its ideals may be, from the perspective of symbolic interactionism and Irving Goffmanâs dramaturgy, NPOs inevitably face the same reality like any other organizations â the gap between ideas and practices, the contrast between front-stage and back-stage, and the seemingly irrelevance but virtually two sides of one coin between seriousness and ludicrousness. This study uses two small NPOs as the context for research and the field for participant observation. The research adopts ethnographically-oriented participant observation as its methodology approach. Taking âsocial marketingâ as a contrast, it uses dramaturgy, social representation theory, and symbolic interactionism to sneak into the process of human interaction under the sacred umbrella of NPOsâ missions. The results indicate the following points: 1.During the process of idea practicing, ideals have to compromise with practices, and a balance between the two has to be met; 2.Although the participants of NPOsâ activities appear to be supportive to NPOs, they may actually be attracted by the activities itself (not the âmissionâ), or even worse â they do not really care about what NPOs intend to do; 3.It appears that volunteers come forward to help marketing activities because they identify with the NPOs; however, very often they are being attracted by their own interest and/or âguan-xiâ; 4.Full-time workers are responsible for daily operation of the NPOs, and therefore have more knowledge about the organization. Although they are on behalf of their organizations and thus their ideals, they still need to practically make their livings while also look for opportunities for self-fulfilling. 5.Under the guidance of their missions, NPOs also face challenge to survive, and have to interact and communicate with the public under the framework of daily life. ▼ After the 1990s, Japan has been deeply influenced by international trends as well as its own political and economic development. With the traditional Tenno system, Japan confronted the rapid rise and impact of the civilians' social consciousness. The change can be observed and traced back to the period after the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995, when a volunteering civic engagement started automatically and later spread up the realization and implementation of the Non-Profit Organizations (NPO) Act. Based on my observations regarding legal regulations and institutional changes , this dissertation constructs a society-centered theory to explore and to analyze the relationship between the Japanese government and NPOs during the new period. This dissertation also seeks to explain how civic social ideologies developed and promoted the NPO Act and the establishment of the new JICA. In order to be more precise on the topic, I examine the change and the development by dividing the progress into âtraditional periodâ and ânew periodâ with after the cold war in the 1990s. On reviewing the changes of patterns and features of the development, I study the new interactive modes between state and society. The emphasis of this study is to show how Japan accelerated the NPO and ODA legal regulation and institutional changes. Furthermore, the study discusses how, the unique and new type of intermediate organizations, that support NPOs, developed after the execution of the NPO Act, and how those agencies provided local governments with NPOs cooperative partnership. In addition, this dissertation uses the platform of NPO Center of Chiba Prefecture as a case study, to analyze how to effectively combine members to spread the idea of âNPO Prefecture,â and how to reorganize the system of new JICA in order to adopt outward environment and inward NPO participation. In other words, by demonstrating this new mode of cooperative partnership, the study expects to provide scholars with a reference of relative subjects and hopes to support the development of civil society in the developing countries. インターネットやパソコン技術の進歩により、2000年以降のアーティスト/ミュージシャンの活動モデルは変化している。音楽楽曲はインターネットやP2Pを介して無料でダウンロードされ、違法に取引が盛んにされている。このままではアーティスト/ミュージシャンが生計を立てていた活動モデルが崩れさるだろう。近年では、ap bankやブラストビートといった、音楽に新しい価値を見出だす活動も盛んに行なわれている。本研究ではNPOによるイベントの開催を通して、アーティスト/ミュージシャンが今後、どのように音楽活動モデルを行なえば良いのか、音楽の新しい付加価値を見出だし、活動モデルを見出だしていく。研究活動内容としては、NPO法人TOKYO TOMORROWに参加し小規模・中規模の音楽ライブイベントを行い、アーティストが主体的に取るユーザーとの交流のモデルを検討する。特に注目すべき事はワークショップを基にした音楽ライブとのコラボレーションイベントであり、ワークショップ併催イベントの集客力や、新しい音楽活動モデルとして可能性が存在するか比較検討を行う。

▼ In juni 2014 ging in Nederland het nieuwe online platform NLziet van start. NLziet is een samenwerkingsverband tussen NPO, RTL XL en KIJK, waarmee de drie aanbieders gezamenlijk een vuist willen vormen tegen de buitenlandse concurrentie, zoals Netflix. Opvallend is dat de drie aanbieders, naast hun aandeel in NLziet, ook nog hun eigen platformen hebben. Daarop bieden zij voor het grootste gedeelte dezelfde content aan als die ze zelf aanbieden op NLziet. De drie aanbieders verwachten dat ze via NLziet meer kijkers gaan binden dan via hun afzonderlijke platformen. In deze masterthesis is onderzocht welke strategieën er binnen NLziet worden ingezet om kijkers te binden, waardoor de drie aanbieders de verwachting hebben dat ze de concurrentie met de buitenlandse aanbieders beter aankunnen. Aan de hand van de concepten branding, scripted space en personalization is een platformanalyse uitgevoerd. Uit de analyse is gebleken dat het platform NLziet uit drie losse platformen lijkt te bestaan. De drie aanbieders proberen de abonnee zo lang mogelijk vast te houden op hun eigen pagina’s binnen NLziet door middel van branding, scripted space en personalization. Dit doen ze alle drie op verschillende manieren. Abonnees betalen 7,95 euro per maand en de inkomsten worden over de drie aanbieders verdeeld op basis van gegenereerde kijktijd. Hierdoor is er sprake van concurrentie tussen de drie aanbieders. De abonnee betaalt voor de content van alle drie de aanbieders. In de praktijk wordt hij echter vastgehouden door één aanbieder. NLziet wil graag bekend staan als één platform dat toegang biedt tot alle content van de grote Nederlandse zenders. Uit de analyse blijkt dat het samengaan van drie aanbieders in één de belangrijkste strategie is van NLziet om kijkers te binden. Echter, het idee achter NLziet komt door de concurrentie tussen de drie aanbieders niet goed tot uiting. Hierdoor is die strategie niet sterk en lijkt NLziet weinig meerwaarde te bieden voor de gebruiker in vergelijking met de drie afzonderlijke platformen, die zelfs gratis toegankelijk zijn. ▼ Non-Profit-Organisationen werden meist als wettbewerbsloser Dritter Sektor dargestellt. Tatsächlich gibt es in diesem Bereich keinen Konkurrenzkampf um die Marktanteile. Trotzdem existiert auch im Dritten Sektor eine Konkurrenz um die Ressourcengeber. Jede NPO versucht, Mittelgeber, seien es Privatspender, Sponsoren oder die öffentliche Hand, von der Wichtigkeit ihrer Ziele zu überzeugen, um damit möglichst viele Ressourcen zu erhalten. Die Jahresberichte können dabei als Werbemittel dienen, denn sie können durch die Transparenz in der Mittelverwendung die Öffentlichkeit überzeugen. Mehrere Werke beschäftigen sich mit dem Thema der Finanzanalyse im NPO-Bereich und trotzdem mangelt es an einer einheitlichen Kennzahlen-Klassifikation für die NPO-relevante Finanzanalyse. Entgegen der Ziele von NPOs wird in der Literatur oft keine Differenzierung zu den Profit-Organisationen bei der Kennzahlenanalyse vorgenommen. Dabei bleibt unberücksichtigt, dass die Verwendung von Rentabilitäts-Kennzahlen gerade für den Dritten Sektor keine große Bedeutung hat, abgesehen davon können diese, wegen mangelnder Daten, nur bei wenigen NPOs berechnet werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Frage, wie der aktuelle Stand der Berichterstattung im österreichischen Dritten Sektor ist und inwieweit die österreichischen NPOs den steigenden Anforderungen an die Transparenz bei der Mittelverwendung gerecht werden können. In dieser Arbeit wird eine Finanzanalyse der Jahresberichte aus einer Stichprobe von 80 österreichischen NPOs durchgeführt. Dafür sind NPO-spezifische Kennzahlen gefunden, berechnet und „Branchen“-übergreifend analysiert worden. Des Weiteren wurden die bedeutendsten Finanzierungsquellen ermittelt und deren Aufteilung in der Stichprobe untersucht. Dabei wurde eine gewisse Wandlung in Richtung der Selbstfinanzierung durch Leistungsverträge, vor allem mit der öffentlichen Hand, beobachtet. Im Allgemeinen entsprechen die Jahresberichte der spendengütesiegeltragenden NPOs in Österreich den Transparenzanforderungen der Öffentlichkeit bezüglich der Mittelverwendung. Die meisten Organisationen halten sich an die vorgegebenen Obergrenzen für ihre Fundraising- und Verwaltungskosten.

▼ As social media becomes a more prominent tool for mass communication, nonprofit organizations are using social networking sites as a means to communicate with their target audiences and recruit supporters. This study explores how nonprofits are using Twitter, a microblogging website, to communicate with their audiences during the year-end charitable giving period and investigate which messaging acquires audience engagement. This was determined by investigating nonprofit organizations’ use of Twitter’s multimedia features and the different types of message appeals used when tweeting about their organization’s year-end campaign. Another aim of this study was to identify which message appeals in online charitable giving campaigns are most successful at engaging Twitter users. A content analysis was conducted to determine which multimedia features and message appeals nonprofits are using on Twitter in their year-end tweeting. Tweets were sampled from five nonprofit organizations: United Way, American Red Cross, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Salvation Army and American Heart Association. These organizations were chosen, because of their top-rated efforts in online fundraising. The study investigated which multimedia features and message appeals were used by these nonprofits in year-end tweets and which multimedia features and message appeals stimulate the most user engagement. Interactions between an organization and Twitter users are considered engagement; thus, engagement increases awareness of the nonprofit organization’s mission. This study found that rational appeals were more frequently used among nonprofits organizations and were more likely to increase engagement than emotional appeals. The sample nonprofit organizations appeared to differ in their use of rational and emotional message appeals on Twitter. Results also showed differences in nonprofits’ use of multimedia features. Nonprofit organizations tend to use hashtags and links more frequently than photos and videos; however photos and hashtags seem to be more likely to increase engagement.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Substance abuse is a universal challenge which places strain on the demand for a country’s social welfare resources. In South Africa – one of the countries with the highest number of methamphetamine (MA) users in the world – the demand for substance abuse services has increased rapidly in the past 20 years. Using the framework of ecological systems theory, the study’s main aim was to gain an understanding of the nature, scope and utilisation of social work services that non-profit organisations (NPOs) provide to adult MA users, in order to make informed recommendations in line with current policy directives to NPOs in the Cape metropolitan area. A qualitative case study approach was used together with an exploratory and descriptive case study design. Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 10 service providers and 10 service users The eight-step approach to thematic data analysis by Tesch (in Creswell, 1994) was used in combination with Atlas Ti. Key findings were that social workers, ministers and ex-addicts play significant roles in intervention by providing on-going guidance and support. However, collaboration is urgently required between governmental policymakers, NPOs and private organisations to address the scourge of MA abuse.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dwelmmisbruik is 'n universele uitdaging wat die vraag na 'n land se maatskaplike welsynsbronne benadeel. In Suid-Afrika – een van die lande met die grootste aantal gebruikers van metamfetamien (MA) in die wêreld – het die vraag na dwelmmisbruikdienste die afgelope 20 jaar vinnig toegeneem. Met behulp van die raamwerk van ekologiese sisteem teorie, was die doel van die studie om begrip te verkry van die aard, omvang en benutting van maatskaplike werkdienste wat nie-winsgewende organisasies (NROs) aan volwasse MA-gebruikers bied, om ingeligte aanbevelings in lyn te bring met huidige beleidsriglyne, aan (NROs) in die Kaapse metropolitaanse gebied. 'n Kwalitatiewe gevallestudie-benadering is gebruik tesame met 'n verkennende en beskrywende gevallestudie-ontwerp. Semi-gestruktureerde individuele onderhoude is uitgevoer met 10 diensverskaffers en 10 diensgebruikers. Die agt-stap benadering tot tematiese data-analise is deur Tesch (in Creswell, 1994) aangewend in kombinasie met Atlas Ti. Belangrike bevindings was dat maatskaplike werkers, predikante en oud-verslaafdes ‘n belangrike rol speel met intervensie deur deurlopende leiding en ondersteuning te bied. Daar is egter dringend samewerking tussen regeringspolitici, NROs en private organisasies nodig om die plaag van MA-misbruik aan te spreek.

▼ Workplace violence is a phenomenon which is growing and it has the potential to affect individual performance and organizational productivity. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of employees regarding workplace violence in the National Department of Social Development. The researcher was motivated to choose this subject as a result of her observation working as Employee Health and Wellness Manager in the same Department whereby there were cases reported were related to workplace violence such as poor working relationships, conflict , work related stress and high level of mental health. Furthermore, lack of research and literature studies concerning workplace violence motivated the research. The qualitative approach was utilized and semi-structured interviews were used to gather data about the experiences of employees utilizing interview scheduled, 10 employees who were employees of the National Department of Social Development were interviewed. Purposive sampling method was used to select the suitable participants of the study who met the specific defined criteria. The type of research utilised was applied research to explore the experiences of employees regarding workplace violence and to give meaning to it. A collective case study was used to focus on participants who have experienced workplace violence in order to understand the types of workplace violence that were experienced, the effects it had on individuals as well as factors contributing to workplace violence in the National Department of Social Development. Theoretical overview that was discussed focused on understanding the how the different concepts related to workplace violence is defined in literature as well as looking at the effects of workplace violence on employees and employer as well as highlighting the different types of workplace violence. The research findings indicated that workplace violence is well conceptualised by the employees of Social Development and they understand the meaning of workplace violence. The study has also confirmed that workplace violence exists within the department and most of participants have experienced internal workplace violence. ▼ During the past decade, there has been a growing disgust in Thailand with opposition to eating dogs in Asia and activists have unitedly with organizations encouraged the Thai government to adopt stricter animal rights laws in order to prevent the illegal dog meat trade. One of these organizations is the Thai animal welfare organization Soi Dog Foundation (SDF), that has also contributed with a controlled dog population on the Thai island Phuket and officially made it the first rabies free province in Thailand. Since SDF is solely volunteer and donations based it becomes relevant to examine the reasons behind their success as a non-governmental and nonprofit organization in a third world country. The thesis’s speculations regarding SDF’s historical development aims to help SDF and other NGOs in Asia that share the same goals streamline their marketing. This paper is a bachelor’s thesis including a minor field study in Thailand. It is a qualitative study with empirical observation and participation that analyzes SDF’s social marketing strategies. The study also includes a multimodal analysis of the focus organization’s materials fighting the illegal dog-meat trade and smuggling. The chosen materials are published during the beginning and end of the recent decade and are examined in order to determine which semiotic and multimodal tools they have used throughout this time period to spread awareness of the phenomenon. It is also examined whether SDF composes their texts and structures their materials differently depending on the target group. The research questions are answered with the help of semiotics and analytical tools from the systematic-functional grammar method. It will be briefly analyzed whether SDF attempts to build emotional appeals into their materials with the help of a model called ‘emotional branding’. The thesis’s approach to the analysis of SDF’s communication planning is based on the contingency approach, which implies that it takes variating methods in order to achieve a goal. The Four C’s model will be used in this study when discussing strategies NGOs can use to cooperate or create the desired relationship with their nation’s government. The agenda setting theory is implemented in order to examine SDF’s social marketing strategies. The results of this thesis show that SDF has adapted their materials to the ideal layout structures in modern time throughout the decade and frequently adapts them to their culturally variating target groups. The analysis also displays that the organization uses multiple strategies consisting of multiple minor steps in order to reach a certain goal. Results imply that SDF and other NGOs should focus on social media and their relation to the public, in order to eventually affect the majority public opinion and influence the government laws regarding animal rights.

▼ In South Africa (SA), non-profit organisations (NPOs) are governed by Codes of Good Practice, and the resulting strong governance, supported by effective risk management, is foundational to these organisations’ ability to anticipate and effectively respond to complex challenges. However, although organisations are expected to set higher standards through self-regulation mechanisms and abide by norms of good governance to improve their own transparency and accountabilities, the management of risks in the non-profit sector has not received adequate attention (Social Development, 2012:27). Effective risk assessment can improve the proper functioning of any organisation. This includes having financial stability, good governance, effective risk response strategies, the ability to make informed decisions, improved planning, and performance, and creating a positive organisational structure. The objective of this study is to give insight into the risk assessment of a non-profit organisation in the environmental sector. To achieve this, the study utilised three research questions: “How can a non-profit organisation identify an effective risk assessment process that can minimise risks?”; “Why is risk assessment important to the non-profit organisation?”; and “What are the challenges of risk assessment that are common among non-profit organisations within the environmental sector?” The research was a case study because a case study approach allows “in-depth explorations of complex issues in their real-life settings” (Crowe, Cresswell, Roberston, Huby, Avery & Sheikh, 2011:1). The research was also exploratory because it sought to understand the limited body of knowledge of risk assessment for the NPOs. Given the exploratory nature of the study, a mixed method design was used to collect primary data. A thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data and descriptive analysis to analyse quantitative data. The research was conducted in one of the leading environmental and conservation NPOs in SA. The target population for the study included top management of the organisation. Eighteen participants responded to the semistructured interviews and sixteen responded to the questionnaire. The study used a census technique where all participants who were willing to participate in the study were selected. The findings of this study suggest that a non-profit organisation is complex, thus, making it face unique challenges of growth, people, capacity, and reactiveness when conducting risk assessment. Despite these organisations carrying a non-profit status, results indicate that non-profit management viewed risk assessment as an important exercise to execute and that it must be a selfassessment controlled internally. The establishment of Risk Audit and Compliance SubCommittee (RAC), Risk Register, Internal Controls, and Risk Awareness are strategic processes implemented to effectively respond to risks.
