▼ CO2 emissions from road transport have an increasing importance on the discussion about climate change. Today several models exist potentially capable of evaluating the effect of technology and policy on the energy performance of a transportation system, though they either lack the accuracy required, or they require a level of detail on their inputs, which is prohibiting for large-scale simulations and/or integration with other models or software, e.g. traffic simulation models, cost calculation components, etc. In this light, the objective of the present thesis is the combination of standard vehicle emission simulation approaches, used in vehicle simulation models, with limited statistical/empirical relationships provided by measurement data, and advanced data analysis and machine learning technics, to provide a robust and reliable, yet flexible and quick, integrated framework for analyzing and evaluating the influence of technology and policy on passenger cars’ fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The integrated simulation-based framework is used mainly to support and assess the effects of the transition from the, up-to-recently used, NEDC-based type approval process, to the newly-defined WLTP, which has taken effect in September 2017. Moreover, the tool is used to evaluate the effect of the newly introduced amendments in the type-approval legislation concerning hybrids and other low emission vehicle segments, and, lastly, to replicate real driving emissions gathered through a Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) tests campaign.

One of the main issues of diesel passenger car are emissions and in the near future a lot of changes are expected in this area. Due to high costs of developing new systems it makes sense to investigate possibility to reduce emissions only with modifications of engine control unit. The main idea of the thesis is to show improvement of NOx emissions during cold start, where conversion is not sufficient due to low temperature of catalyst. It is shown that with injection delay and injection of hydrocarbons before catalyst it is possible to reduce NOx emission with slightly increased fuel consumption.

▼ Particulate number (PN) standards in current and future emissions legislation pose a challenge for designers and calibrators during the warm-up phases of cold direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines. To achieve catalyst light-off conditions in the shortest time, engine strategies are often employed that inherently use more fuel to attain higher exhaust temperatures. These can lead to the generation of locally fuel-rich regions within the combustion chamber and hence the formation and emission of particulates. To meet these emissions requirements, further understanding of the DISI in-cylinder processes during cold-start are required. This thesis investigates the effect of cooling an optical research engine to temperatures as low as -7°C, one of the legislative test conditions. A high-speed 9 kHz optical investigation of the in-cylinder combustion and fuel spray along with in-cylinder pressure measurements was completed with the engine motored and fired at 1500 rpm during combustion conditions that were essentially homogeneous and stoichiometric. Results showed significant differences between the flame growth structures at various operating temperature conditions with the notable presence of fuel-rich regions, which are understood to be prominent areas of particulate formation. Measured engine performance parameters such as indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and mass fraction burned (MFB) times correlated with the observed differences in combustion characteristics and flame growth speed. It was shown that flash boiling of the fuel spray was present in the fully heated engine case and significantly reduced the penetration of the spray plume and the likelihood of piston crown and cylinder liner impingement. The flow and combustion processes of a transient production cold start-up strategy were analysed using high-speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV). Results highlighted a broad range of flame structures and contrasting flame stoichiometry occurring at different times in the start-up process. Turbulent flow structures were identified that have an effect on the fuel spray development and combustion process as well as providing a path for cold-start emissions reduction. PN and transient hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were measured at cold conditions to further elucidate the effect of operating temperature and correlate emissions data with in-cylinder measurements. A clear link between the quantity and size range of particulate and HC emissions and operating temperature was shown and the precise in-cylinder location of HC emissions, caused by fuel impingement, was inferred from the HC emissions data.

This project is about developing a method for real driving emission (RDE). RDE is a complement to Worldwide Light Duty Test Procedure (WLTP) which will replace the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). These cycles and procedures are used for measuring emissions for light duty vehicles. The main reason why NEDC is being replaced is because the driving cycles does not reflect how vehicles are normally driven. This has resulted in vehicles having higher fuel consumption and emitting more poisonous gases when driven on actual roads compared to the results from the NEDC.The method was developed by referring to the laws of the official WLTP report written by EU. Together with the Vehicle Emissions team at AVL a complete step by step method was established. All the equipment and instruments were provided by AVL and several tests of each step of the method was made to perfect the method as much as possible. The vehicle that was used was a 2005 SAAB 9-5 2.0l petrol. The results displayed that the car and the test did not meet the criteria for RDE and was not passed by the evaluating software. This was partly because the driving criteria for RDE are strict and can be difficult to achieve and partly because no pre and post test was made since it can take several tries before those tests are passed.Overall, WLTP and RDE give buyers a more detailed and better conclusion of how a car performs on the road compared to NEDC.

▼ In the context of this dissertation, the fuel consumption and emissions of many vehicles were measured under various driving conditions and emission and consumption reduction technologies were investigated. The impact of conventional fuel consumption reduction technologies was simulated by modeling a gasoline and diesel vehicle under NEDC, WLTP and CADC driving cycles, using the AVL Cruise platform. The technologies tested include brake energy recuperation, start-stop, vehicle mass reduction, aerodynamic resistance reduction, rolling resistance reduction, gearbox changes and engine efficiency improvements. Each technology has a different impact on each driving cycle, while the overall reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions achieved by combining all technologies was in the range of 12-14%. Concerning pollutant reduction technologies, the possibility of reducing NOx emissions of a Euro 6b diesel vehicle was studied. Initially, the vehicle was tested on the road following the RDE regulation where it emitted 5 times more NOx than the 80 mg/km limit. The vehicle’s engine operation was simulated on a laboratory dyno, where an identical engine was installed. Modifications were made to the exhaust aftertreatment system, including the replacement of the LNT system with an SCR system. The modifications reduced NOx emissions by 90%, achieving compliance with the Euro 6 limits without requiring any additional fuel consumption. The effect of driving conditions on emissions and fuel consumption was then addressed. In particular, three Euro 6 diesel vehicles were tested in the NEDC, WLTP, CADC driving cycles and on the road, on normal RDE-compliant routes and other more dynamic ones. The emissions reduction strategy of the three vehicles seems to be exclusively targeting the NEDC cycle, as at non-NEDC operating conditions the use of anti-pollution systems is minimized. WLTP emissions were closer to the emissions measured under real conditions; however, the engine operating range during the road tests was greater than the range during laboratory tests. In addition, NOx emission levels increase dramatically when driving the vehicle in a more dynamic manner outside the boundaries of the RDE regulation. Finally, on-road emissions measurements were carried out on a fleet of eight vehicles, two diesel, one gasoline, one LPG vehicle, one CNG, one hybrid and two older gasoline vehicles which had been converted to gasoline-LPG dual fuels. No fuel/engine type had low CO2, CO and NOx emissions over the full range of real world driving conditions. However, it is worth mentioning that the older gasoline-LPG vehicles had the worst emission performance, the CNG vehicle had the lowest CO2 emissions and the hybrid had the lowest CO and NOx emissions combined. With regard to conventional vehicle types, diesel vehicles had very high NOx emissions, while gasoline vehicles had extremely high CO emissions under dynamic driving conditions, reaching 35 times the regulatory limits.

▼ [EN] The automotive industry is currently experiencing one of its most rapidly
changing periods in recent decades, driven by a growing interest in reducing the
negative environmental impacts caused by fossil fuels consumption and the resulting
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions generated during the operation of the
internal combustion engine (ICE) which have proven to contribute significantly
to Global Warming.
Given the fact that a total replacement of the current fleet, dependent of fossil
fuels, is unlikely to happen in the immediate future and the urgency to reducing
CO2 emissions from transportation in order to tackle Global Warming, it is possible
to say that optimizing current ICE technologies and conventional vehicles
and engines is a first order priority. Among the technical solutions developed to
improve the efficiency of ICE, low viscosity engine oils (LVEO) have emerged as
an effective and low-cost method that provides reductions in fuel consumption
between 0.5% and 5%.
During the development of this thesis, a test plan focused on determining
fuel consumption reduction when low viscosity oils are used in light duty vehicles
(LDV) and heavy duty vehicles (HDV) were carried out. The test plan has been
divided in three parts; the first part was focused on the study of light-duty vehicles
(LDV) using one diesel engine representative of the European market. During this
part three testing modes were used: comparative motored, fired stationary points
and transient homologation cycle tests. All test were performed in the engine
test bed. The second part of the study consisted of another comparative test,
this time using a different engine oils in a HDV fleet. The study was conducted
using the urban buses fleet of the city of Valencia, including 3 buses models ,
with 2 different powertrain technologies. The third part of the study was focused
on the friction coefficient behavior within the engine tribological pairs making
comparative tests in two specialized tribometers; one of reciprocating action to
simulate the lubrication conditions in the piston ring-cylinder liner contact and
a "ball-on-disk" tribometer to simulate the lubrication in the distribution system.
The various comparative studies have served to analyze how the friction and fuel
consumption responded when LVEO were used both in the ICE and the complete
vehicle contexts. The fuel consumption benefit found during the test was used to
y…
