▼ This dissertation is a combination of acoustic and electronic musical creation, acoustic instruments and digital instruments, and a combination of all of these areas. Part I is an original composition for orchestra with the new instrument set as soloist. Part II is an examination of the development and influences of creating a new electronic musical instrument. Part I is a composition for AEMI (the Actuated Embedded Musical Instrument) and orchestra, entitled “Meditation on Solids, Liquids, and Gas.” This composition is a dialogue between the orchestra and instrument, set as an exchange of ideas; sometimes ideas lead to conflict, others lead to resolution. This also serves as a way to feature some of the musical capabilities of this new instrument. Part II is an examination of AEMI and its influences. Chapter 1 includes a discussion of existing instruments whose similar features influenced the development of AEMI: the Theremin, Manta, JD-1, Buchla controller, EVI and EWI, and Chameleon Guitar. While AEMI instrument does not have the same performance mechanics as the Theremin, Evi, or Ewi, understanding the physicality issues of an instrument, like the Theremin, provided insights into creating a versatile instrument that can be easily learned yet have virtuosic character. Ultimately, embedding expressivity, such as subtlety and nuance into the instrument, would be one of the most difficult aspects of creating an instrument and would demand the largest amount of work. Chapter 2 describes the aesthetics, technical aspects, difficulties, and musical abilities of the instrument. Attempts to combine acoustic and electronic music are not novel, the incorporation of acoustically driven resonance by electronic embedded instruments is new. The electroacoustic nature of this instrument is different than most electronic instruments. The controller and user interface is electronically driven, and its speakers/acoustic drivers are embedded within the instrument. This discussion may provide insights to musicians, composers, and instrument makers involved in the finding of new avenues of musical expression.

▼ This thesis examines the underlying foundations of my creative practice. It accompanies a folio of sonic art works where visual components such as time-based media, still images and three-dimensional forms are integral to the spectator experience. Practitioners and theorists alike recognise that sonic art works may be interpreted in a variety of ways depending on how people listen and the context in which they listen. I also examine what musicians and visual artists have traditionally done in creating a new work involving both sonic and visual elements and showing how either discipline can potentially affect the direction of its development. In examining work by other artists and commentaries by theorists I have formed a deeper philosophical understanding of my own creative output. My creative output involves new approaches to technical challenges and is examined through the analysis of three recent works. I examine the relationship between musical ideas and ideas derived from other artistic and scientific disciplines, showing how both may be embedded in the creative process and how they might be brought to the surface during an exhibition or performance. The thesis examines the relationship between technological advances and the tools used to produce works of art. I seek to reveal any technological imprint that might be left by such tools on the aesthetic and presentation of a work. I discuss how various screen-based technologies have been appropriated and in the process how new artistic goals for sonic art works have been identified and achieved. I have also acquired a deeper understanding of visual gestures and cues associated with sonic art works by investigating a representative sample of theatrically enhanced musical performance, audio visual composition, musical instrument design, sculpture and installation. This research has informed my own artistic practice. Integral to it is the process of writing original software for embedded DSP devices, software for algorithmic performance and sound design. Occasionally my artistic practice also ventures into hardware development and experimentation with new materials and processes.

▼ The sense of touch plays a fundamental role in musical performance: alongside hearing, it is the primary sensory modality used when interacting with musical instruments. Learning to play a musical instrument is one of the most developed haptic cultural practices, and within acoustic musical practice at large, the importance of touch and its close relationship to virtuosity and expression is well recognised. With digital musical instruments (DMIs) - instruments involving a combination of sensors and a digital sound engine - touch-mediated interaction remains the foremost means of control, but the interfaces of such instruments do not yet engage with the full spectrum of sensorimotor capabilities of a performer. This poses compelling questions for digital instrument design: how does the nuance and richness of physical interaction with an instrument manifest itself in the digital domain? Which design parameters are most important for haptic experience, and how do these parameters affect musical performance? Built around three practical studies which utilise DMIs as technology probes, this thesis addresses these questions from the point of view of design, of empirical musicology, and of tangible computing. In the first study musicians played a DMI with continuous pitch control and vibrotactile feedback in order to understand how dynamic tactile feedback can be implemented and how it influences musician experience and performance. The results suggest that certain vibrotactile feedback conditions can increase musicians' tuning accuracy, but also disrupt temporal performance. The second study examines the influence of asynchronies between audio and haptic feedback. Two groups of musicians, amateurs and professional percussionists, were tasked with performing on a percussive DMI with variable action-sound latency. Differences between the two groups in terms of temporal accuracy and quality judgements illustrate the complex effects of asynchronous multimodal feedback. In the third study guitar-derivative DMIs with variable levels of control richness were observed with non-musicians and guitarists. The results from this study help clarify the relationship between tangible design factors, sensorimotor expertise and instrument behaviour. This thesis introduces a descriptive model of performer-instrument interaction, the projection model, which unites the design investigations from each study and provides a series of reflections and suggestions on the role of touch in DMI design.

▼ The modern clarinet has been in use for nearly 100 years, however, there remains much concerning the physics of the instrument that researchers have yet to understand. One of the more important aspects of the instrument that concerns musicians, is the quality of the instrument. There are many aspects of this study of instrument quality that could be subjective. This dissertation takes a step towards an objective acoustical quality marker of the clarinet by focusing on analytical predictions of playing frequencies given certain variable inputs such as blowing pressure and reed opening at rest. This research offers a study of this acoustical property by means of simplified mathematical formulas, numerical simulations, and experimental methods in order to create tuning maps of the clarinet over a normal range of playing parameters. The dissertation begins by offering an introduction to the concept of impedance as perhaps the most important and applicable concept in musical instrument acoustics. In this work, the resonance frequencies of the instrument provide a basis for all playing frequency predictions and these resonance frequencies are found by analyzing the measured input impedance. The dissertation then describes the analytical methods for predicting playing frequencies by considering changes from the instrument's resonance frequencies due to a number of fairly complicated effects including: reed induced flow, reed dynamics, instrument inharmonicity, and a player introduced temperature gradient. Numerical prediction methods are also described in order to provide a benchmark for the newly defined analytical formulas. Next, experimental validation methods and preliminary data are detailed in which an artificial mouth and instrumented mouthpiece were used to create tuning maps in order to further test the bounds of the analytical formulas. Finally, tuning maps are created using the simplified analytical formulas. These tuning maps can show, for all combinations of possible blowing pressures and reed openings, the resulting clarinet playing frequencies. These tuning maps could eventually give musicians and instrument makers fast, reliable, and perhaps more importantly, objective information about the quality of their clarinets. Si dans son aspect physique l’arc musical est simple, à l’issu de notre étude, nous nous rendons compte qu’il n’est plus indiqué de le qualifier comme tel. Car dans sa forme fondamentale (branche arquée maintenue dans cette position par une lanière), il renferme une complexité qui se dévoile à nous par les liens qui existent entre les différents éléments qui composent l’arc. Sa complexité est également apparente dans la variété des arcs musicaux, dans le jeu propre à chaque arc et dans la divergence des techniques et circonstances de jeu. L’analyse acoustique des sons de cet instrument en révèle d’avantage sa complexité à travers la variété de la nature des sons puis leur fluctuation que nous avons eu le temps de constater. Enfin, dans la signification que les populations donnent à cet instrument, la complexité de l’arc musical se fait plus flagrante car elle laisse se dévoiler un aspect de l’identité sociale des peuples aussi bien ceux qui l’observent dans les musées que ceux chez qui sont collectionnés ces instruments. Car si pour les uns il est instrument de divertissement, pour les autres, il est objet de rituel, instrument parleur et médiateur, objet chargé d’une profonde et riche histoire des peuples d’Afrique. Nous espérons enfin que notre étude permettra une bonne collaboration entre le nord et le sud, pour une connaissance plus juste de l’autre, une connaissance fondée sur des valeurs et non des préjugés.

If the mouthbow appears simple in its physical aspect, the research we have undertaken proves the opposite. In its basic form (a hooked branch held together by a strip), it contains a complex reality which could only be understood by considering the links which exist between the different elements which make up the bow. Its complexity can equally be perceived in the variety of musical bows, the uniqueness of each bow as well as the divergent techniques and circumstances under which they are played. The acoustic analysis of the sounds of this instrument reveals even more its complexity through the variety of the nature of the sounds, as well as their fluctuation that we have been able to observe through our study. Finally, through the meaning that the people give to this instrument, the complexity of the musical bow is even more blatant in the sense that it brings to bare an aspect of the social identity of the people to those who observe this instrument in the museums as well as those who keep them as private objects. If for some it is a simple instrument for entertainment, for others, it is a ritual object, a talking and mediatory instrument which encloses a deep and rich history of the people of Africa. It is our hope that our research will call for a deeper collaboration between the North and the South in such matters, a real desire to know the other based on values and not on prejudices.

Le sanctuaire de Delphes a connu pendant toute la période une vie musicale effervescente, notamment par la tenue périodique des prestigieux concours pythiques Cependant, on ne s’était jamais demandé pourquoi la musique y a connu une telle faveur. Il faut remarquer que bien des aspects des musiques données à Delphes sont communs à d’autres sanctuaires : l’Apollon citharède honoré à Delphes est panhellénique et les offrandes qui lui sont consacrées, instruments comme compositions, se trouvent sur d’autres sites. Mais Delphes a ses spécificités : l’interaction d’un environnement sonore adéquat, de la pratique oraculaire et de la volonté amphictyonique de distinguer les concours de pythiques, dans la mesure de leur liberté, en font un cas unique. C’est ainsi que l’on peut parler de « centre musical », au sens où Delphes est une étape obligée des parcours géographiques et sociaux des musiciens et un terrain d’échanges privilégié tant dans la pratique que la théorie musicales. Au terme de cette étude, il paraît clair que Delphes a occupé une place originale dans l’histoire de la musique antique, éminemment paradoxale : c’est un site incontournable pour les musiciens, alors même qu’il n’y eut jamais d’école de musique locale forte à Delphes. C’est là que se trouve sans doute la réponse à notre question : la prospérité musicale de Delphes peut venir de ce que le sanctuaire est un terrain qui était perçu comme neutre par tous les musiciens du monde grec, où ils se retrouvaient égaux par les règles spécifiques en usage à Delphes et qui n’avantageaient aucun musicien originaire des lieux.

The musical life was particularly brilliant in the sanctuary of Delphi, especially during the prestigious Pythian contests. Indeed, no scholar has ever wondered why music was so pregnant in Delphi. Many aspects of the musical life in Delphi are common in comparison to other Greek sanctuaries: Apollo Kitharoidos is a panhellenic god and votive offerings for him (instruments and scores) can be found elsewhere. However, there are some specific features: due to the interaction between an impressive soundscape, the oracular cult and the decision of the Amphictiony to make a distinction between Pythian contests and other ones, Delphi is unique. That is why Delphi can be considered as a “musical centre”: all Greek musicians travel to Delphi, so as to increase their social status; furthermore, there were lots of musical transferts between musicians; so that they may change their own way of playing or understang music. At the end of our study, it is obvious that Delphi has got a specific place in the history of ancient music, but it is quite paradoxical: it is necessary for musicians to come to Delphi, although there is no local music school at all in Delphi. It could be the answer to our preliminary question: Delphi may have been seen by all of the Greek musicians as a neutral site, where no advantage was given to anybody else. In fact, all musicians were equally treated because of the specific rules used in Delphi.

▼ Integrating state-of-the-art sensory and display technologies with 3D computer graphics, extended reality (XR) affords capabilities to create enhanced human experiences by merging virtual elements with the real world. To better understand how Sound and Music Computing (SMC) can benefit from the capabilities of XR, this thesis presents novel research on the de- sign of musical experiences in extended reality (MusE-XR). Integrating XR with research on computer assisted musical instrument tutoring (CAMIT) as well as New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), I explore the MusE-XR design space to contribute to a better understanding of the capabilities of XR for SMC. The first area of focus in this thesis is the application of XR technologies to CAMIT enabling extended reality enhanced musical instrument learning (XREMIL). A common approach in CAMIT is the automatic assessment of musical performance. Generally, these systems focus on the aural quality of the performance, but emerging XR related sensory technologies afford the development of systems to assess playing technique. Employing these technologies, the first contribution in this thesis is a CAMIT system for the automatic assessment of pianist hand posture using depth data. Hand posture assessment is performed through an applied computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) pipeline to classify a pianist’s hands captured by a depth camera into one of three posture classes. Assessment results from the system are intended to be integrated into a CAMIT interface to deliver feedback to students regarding their hand posture. One method to present the feedback is through real-time visual feedback (RTVF) displayed on a standard 2D computer display, but this method is limited by a need for the student to constantly shift focus between the instrument and the display. XR affords new methods to potentially address this limitation through capabilities to directly augment a musical instrument with RTVF by overlaying 3D virtual objects on the instrument. Due to limited research evaluating effectiveness of this approach, it is unclear how the added cognitive demands of RTVF in virtual environments (VEs) affect the learning process. To fill this gap, the second major contribution of this thesis is the first known user study evaluating the effectiveness of XREMIL. Results of the study show that an XR environment with RTVF improves participant performance during training, but may lead to decreased improvement after the training. On the other hand,interviews with participants indicate that the XR environment increased their confidence leading them to feel more engaged during training. In addition to enhancing CAMIT, the second area of focus in this thesis is the application of XR to NIME enabling virtual environments for musical expression (VEME). Development of VEME requires a workflow that integrates XR development tools with existing sound design tools. This presents numerous technical challenges, especially to novice XR developers. Este trabalho tem como objetivo compreender os processos de aprendizagens musicais extra-classe vivenciados por três estudantes de instrumento musical, que buscam, por iniciativa própria, conhecimentos além daqueles desenvolvidos em suas aulas de música. A pesquisa foi conduzida fundamentando-se nas questões norteadoras que tratam das razões, dos recursos e das formas de aprendizagens dos estudantes. Para responder as questões, escolhi como metodologia o estudo de casos múltiplos (Yin, 2005; Stake, 2006), utilizando para tanto entrevistas semi-estruturadas. A orientação teórica ancorou-se em conceituações de sujeito educacional de Sacristán (2005), inter-relacionadas às categorias de aprendizagens não-formais de Libâneo (2005b) e ao conceito de autonomia de Piaget (1994). A análise dos dados evidenciou aspectos relevantes nos processos de busca dos estudantes como: influência dos pais, mercado de trabalho, vontade de saber mais, prazer de tocar em grupo. As formas de aprendizagem incluem: aprendizagem por observação, experimentação e pesquisa. Os comportamentos verificados foram: autocrítica, senso de organização pessoal, estabelecimento de metas e tarefas, iniciativa própria, entre outras qualidades de autonomia. Diante desses resultados esta pesquisa vem contribuir para reflexões a respeito do aluno contemporâneo e suas relações com o professor/escola.

This research aims at understanding the learning processes conducted by some music students that, despite of their regular instrument lesson, look for other ways and places to complement their knowledge and skills for playing the instrument. The research was conducted based on questions about the reasons and the procedures used in this process. The multiple case study (Yin, 2005; Stake, 2006) was the methodology used to answer the research questions. The theoretical orientation included Sacristans concept of educational person (2005), Libâneos (2005b) non-formal learning categories and Piagets (1994) concept of autonomy. The results showed that the more relevant aspects in the learning processes taken by students beyond their lesson were: parents influence, the will to know more, the needs of the working market, the pleasure to play in groups. The more evident behaviors in the process were: a great sense of self-criticism and of personal organization, the establishment of goals and tasks, self-initiative, among other characteristics. With these results, this research hopes to contribute to the discussions about the contemporary students and their relationship with instrument teachers and schools.

This paper presents the possibility to transfer Musical Instrument Digital Interface messages overBluetooth Low Energy. The main problem was to transmit the messages between two computers inless than 10 milliseconds. Anything above 10 milliseconds could be noticed as a delay by the personplaying or listening to the music. A prototype was written which could transfer Musical InstrumentDigital Interface messages over Bluetooth Low Energy between two Linux-computers together with atesting framework which was used to make measurements. The prototype was written in the languageC++ with the BlueZ library. The time it took for one packet to travel back and forth from the computerswas clocked to get an estimation of the time it took for a packet to travel from one computer to theother. The measured results showed that it was possible to reach the desired time of 10 milliseconds.The results can also be used when considering development of other kind of equipment and/or applicationsthat implements the use of Bluetooth Low Energy.

Denna rapport presenterar möjligheterna att överföra Musical Instrument Digital Interfacemeddelanden över Bluetooth Low Energy. Huvudproblemet var att överföra meddelandena mellantvå datorer under en tid av 10 millisekunder. Allt över 10 milliskunder skulle kunna uppfattas somen fördröjning av den som spelade eller lystnade på musiken. En prototyp skapades som kundeöverföra denna typ meddelanden över Bluetooth Low Energy mellan två Linux-datorer tillsammansmed ett test-ramverk som kunde utföra prestandamätningar. Prototypen skrevs i språket C++tillsammans med biblioteket BlueZ. Den tid det tog för ett paket att färdas fram och tillbaka mellande båda datorerna klockades för att få en uppskattning på hur lång tid det tog för ett paket att färdasfrån en dator till en annan. De uppmätta resultaten visar att det är möjligt att uppnå deneftersträvade tiden på 10 millisekunder. Resultatet kan också användas då det övervägs att utvecklaett annat typ av program eller applikation som ska nyttja Bluetooth Low Energy.

▼ This study focused mainly on examining factors of teachers’ intention to use the Internet for class as one way of practicing constructivist teaching. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) was tested, discussed, and used to identify specific factors that influence teachers’ intention. Multiple regression and structural equation modeling with LISREL were used to analyze data at the .05 alpha of the significant level. The population for the study was secondary teachers in career and technical education in Georgia. According to the 2001 roster list, the population contained 3,788 secondary teachers. Through a stratified systematic sampling method based on content specialty area, instruments were mailed to 830 participants or 22% of the original population. A total of 343 valid responses were returned providing a response rate of 41%. The factors examined were (a) intention, (b) attitude, (c) subjective norm, and (d) perceived behavioral control from the TPB, and (e) perceived teaching value, and (f) habitual excuse as external factors of the TPB. Additional information about Internet use (teaching experience using the Internet for class; definition of the Internet; Internet use and its purpose) as well as background (age, gender, educational level, years of teaching, and teaching area) were also examined. Participants were also asked to provide feedback about their Internet experience and perspectives through an open-ended question. Effect size of R2 was 54% in LISREL analysis. Attitude was the strongest predictor for forming teachers’ intention to use the Internet in class, followed by subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. Teachers introduced specific information about how they have explored the Internet for class research. However, most teachers did not agree with using-email or homework assignments that depend upon the Internet, mostly because low socio-economic group students might not have Internet access at home. Teachers further indicated that e-mail use in class might not be appropriate for high school students because it is too impersonal. Also, they feared that this would increase their workload at home. Nevertheless, some teachers reported that they have successfully used e-mail with parents.
