▼ The
municipal solid
waste (MSW) management system is
consisted of planning, development, execution of capital works, and
so on. Too many factors in the system make the decision making
process plagued with uncertainties, vagueness and complication.
Interval-parameter Linear Programming (ILP) is widely used to deal
with uncertainties existed in the MSW system and to assist optimal
decision making. However, the existing ILP solution algorithms,
i.e., best-worst case algorithm and 2-step algorithm, are found to
be ineffective through a validity checking process. Moreover, the
results from ILP can not reflect the linkage between decision risks
and the system return. In this study, a fuzzy risk explicit
interval-parameter linear programming (FREILP) model is developed
and applied to the long-term planning of the MSW management system
in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). This method is specifically
designed to deal with extensive uncertainties existed in the MSW
management system and to provide decision supports to HRM planners.
In the model, ILP is used to reflect uncertainties existed in both
objective function and constraints. Based on the basic ILP, a risk
function is defined to assist in finding solutions with minimum
system cost while minimizing the system risk, under certain
aspiration levels. The aspiration level could be conservative,
medium or aggressive, and can thus be presented as a fuzzy set to
reflect the preference of decision makers. Three sets of solutions
are obtained accordingly. Besides, the model was also solved under
the aspiration level from 0 to 1, with a step of 0.1, for providing
a comprehensive decision support. This approach can effectively
reflect dynamic, interactive, uncertain characteristics, as well as
the interactions between overall cost and risk level of the MSW
management system, thus provide valuable information to support the
decision-making process, such as
waste allocation pattern, timing
and expansion capacities of the
municipal solid
waste management
activities. The result can directly reflect the tradeoff between
decision risks and the system return.

▼ In most developing countries, the problem of inefficient
municipal solid
waste management (MSWM) is endemic. The problem is manifested by heaps of uncollected solid
waste found on open areas and by the street sides. This dissertation examines the relationship between land pollution and population density resulting from solid
waste generation in the City of Kwekwe in Zimbabwe. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted to 375 randomly selected households in low, medium and high density residential suburbs. The household survey was triangulated with field observations, key informant interviews and secondary data sources. The average household size in high, medium and low density residential areas was 11, 8 and 5 people respectively. The study revealed that the amount and composition of solid
waste generated varied according to household size, income and education levels of residents. The higher the population density, the more the solid
waste
produced. However,
waste generated was not carried to the dumpsites for disposal. Also the higher the income, the higher the amount of solid
waste produced, although residents with high income were able to ferry their wastes to the dumpsites hence less land pollution. The solid
waste generation rate in high density areas was 0.04 kg/capita day, in medium density areas was 0.35 kg/capita/day and in low density areas were 0.84 kg/capita/day. It was also observed that among high income earners, the educated people produced more
waste than low income earners. However, the low income earners and the less educated people could not take care of their environment to limit roadside and open space littering. However, lack of public awareness coupled with inefficient and ad hoc
waste management system continue make provision of effective solid
waste management services illusive. Based on the research findings, it is suggested sound environmental stewardship amongst residents will limit land
pollution in the city of Kwekwe.

▼ The geotechnical properties of
municipal solid
waste (MSW) such as compressibility, shear strength and stiffness are of prime importance in design and construction of landfills. However, it is not well clear how the stress-strain and strength characteristics vary with time as the biodegradation of
waste continues in the landfill. There is also a need to address the variability of MSW properties and their role in landfill design. The present thesis proposes models for the analyses of stress-strain response of MSW in undrained and drained conditions. The proposed models are based on critical state soil mechanics concept and the modified cam clay model is extended to consider the effects of creep and biodegradation. The models are examined with reference to experimental data and published results of MSW in the form of stress strain response. In addition, the experimental results and the data from published literature are also compared with predictions from hyperbolic model. The proposed models are able to capture the stress strain response of MSW in undrained and drained condition adequately.
The applicability of proposed model is presented in terms of shear strength ratio, stiffness ratio and settlement for typical landfill cases. In order to examine the influence of model parameters on shear strength, stiffness ratio and settlement, multilinear regression equations are developed based on response surface method (RSM) for different coefficients of variation (COVs). The effect of variability associated with model parameters is examined using reliability analysis.
For better understanding, the present thesis is divided into following seven chapters.
Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter, in which the need for use of the constitutive models and its use in engineering response analysis of MSW is presented. Further, the organization of thesis is also presented.
Chapter 2 presents various studies with regard to the engineering properties of MSW available in the literature. Different models and approaches proposed by various researchers for the prediction of stress-strain response, time dependent behavior and settlement analysis of the MSW are presented. The uncertainty associated with engineering properties and available methods for reliability analysis and the use of response surface method are presented. Finally, based on the literature review, the scope of the thesis and summary of chapter are presented at the end.
Chapter 3 presents composition of MSW, detailed description of the sample preparation, methods adopted in the experimental program and test results of one dimensional compression and consolidated undrained tests. Based on the experimental observations, a constitutive model for
municipal solid
waste for undrained condition in the framework of modified cam clay model considering mechanical creep and biodegradation mechanisms is proposed. It also provides detailed description of the selection of the input parameters required for the proposed model. Further, the detailed derivation of proposed model and the…

▼ The author poses a question whether the
current legal regulation of waste is proper. The question is
answered by analyzing five issues: variety of the concepts of waste
(waste can be perceived in distinct manners and the current concept
aggravates the solution of two principal waste problems – danger to
the environment and danger to human health); non-systematic use of
terms (improper terms are used in Lithuanian legal acts); the
jurisprudence of Lithuanian courts in explaining the concept of
waste (the courts do not perceive waste properly); the twofold term
of the municipal/household waste in Lithuanian legal acts
(municipal/household waste is regulated by using the same term,
thus it is not clear for which waste persons are taxed); the
application of the municipal levy for waste management (the current
model does not encourage to preserve the environment). The author
concludes that the variety of the concepts of waste, the
disagreements among the scholars on the question, the difficulties
encoutered by the courts and non-ameliorating status of the
environment show that it should be reasonable to discard the
current legal regulation of waste. The two principal problems posed
by waste and unsuccessfully solved by the current legal regulation
are determined principally by the objects which are not in any
possesion. Then waste should be perceived as an object which is not
in a possesion and the legal regulation should be orientated in
making all the objects to have a possesor.
Disertacijoje keliamas klausimas, ar esamas
atliekų tvarkymo teisinis reguliavimas yra tinkamas. Į šį klausimą
atsakoma analizuojant penkis atliekų tvarkymo teisinio reguliavimo
objektai. Tuomet atliekomis reikėtų laikyti tik tuos objektus,
kurie nėra valdomi, o teisiniu reguliavimu siekti, kad visi
objektai būtų valdomi.

▼ In Peru, since 2000 a group of laws and institutions have been created to regulate, manage and monitor the
municipal solid
waste (MSW) management system. These measures suppose political will to reach an integrated and sustainable (solid)
waste management (ISWM) system. But, increased per capita
waste generation, low recycling rates, basic or inexistent technologies to treat
waste and other materials ending up in landfill sites; prove to be an ineffective implementation of the current legal framework.
By analysing the current context extensively and focusing on interviews with a wide range of principal stakeholders this thesis claims that the slow progress in the application of
waste reduction and recycling policies is a combination of a lack of political disposition, a lack of environmental awareness; and different priorities, behaviours and interests among the stakeholders involve in MSW.
This thesis seeks to monitor the advances in the enactment of
waste reduction and recycling policies by providing reliable information about limitation aspects of the current management of MSW, with a focus on how the different sectors interact and affect MSW structures.

▼ A field-scale commercial compost study was conducted to evaluate the impact of the Bio-Environmental Resource Recovery International (BERRI) Microbial Assisted Regeneration System (MARS) process, specifically its proprietary microbial inocula, on compost production of various agricultural
waste and
municipal solid
waste (MSW) mixtures. Treated and control windrows were constructed to compare the MARS inoculum by quantity and quality of compost produced, organic stabilization time, and individual component sorting (i.e., green
waste, wood, agriculture
waste, food
waste, MSW, C&D debris, and tires). Specific VOC and SVOC compounds, as well as a common pesticide, carbaryl, were added specifically for this study and the compounds were analyzed for degradation rates. The quality of the compost product was assessed using a method developed for classifying
municipal solid
waste compost. The quantity of compost produced was determined by screening the entire volumes of each pile to determine a gross production of compost for each pile. Compost samples were analyzed by headspace gas chromatography mass spectrometry for VOCs, methylene chloride extraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry for SVOCs, and methanol extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry for carbaryl. The quality of compost was found to have a very low nutrient capacity making the compost only useable as a soil conditioner. Treated piles showed a significantly larger amount of compost production and a decreased time for organic stabilization. No significant degradation of plastics or woods components was observed in any of the treatments used in the study.

▼ The state of solid waste management in cities of most developing countries is fast assuming the scale of a major social and environmental challenge. In Sub-Saharan Africa in particular, the combined influence of poverty, population growth and rapid urbanization has tended to worsen the situation. The gravity of this problem is perhaps best reflected in the level of attention given to it in the United Nations (UN) Millennium Declaration. Three of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) outlined in the declaration have waste or resource efficiency implications. In response to the waste challenge many developed countries have embarked upon ambitious environmental reforms, recording remarkable advances in best practises and sustainable management of their Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). However, many developing countries such as Nigeria have fared less well in this regard as a result of several barriers militating against sustainable management of MSW. The principal aim of this research is therefore to carry out a critical analysis of the various barriers as well as success factors that affect the sustainable management of MSW using Abuja, Nigeria, as a case study. The study adopts a largely quantitative methodological approach, employing waste composition analysis of samples from the case study area, questionnaire survey and focus group interviews of stakeholders in MSW management as key methods for generation of data. Results from analysis of data, using the Statistical Programme for the Social Sciences (SPSS), indicate that between 65-70% of MSW samples from Abuja is biodegradable, mostly comprising of high wet weight and high moisture content kitchen wastes. On the other hand between 11%-30% of MSW samples from the City comprises mostly of non-degradable but recyclable materials such as glass, metals and cans, non-ferrous metals and waste electrical and electronic equipment. The implication of the high levels of moisture content in the biodegradable components is that samples are not suitable for incineration but are ideal for composting and other mechanical and biological management options. Data analysis also reveals that the main barriers to sustainable MSW management in the City include low public awareness/education on MSW management, obsolete and insufficient equipment and funding limitations. On the other hand, the most important success factor affecting sustainable MSW management in Abuja was found to be the bourgeoning City population which has a huge potential for uptake of recycled products. In summary, this research concludes that the factors affecting MSW management in Abuja are typical of many tropical urban environments. Fundamental shifts in current practises towards waste prevention; driven by a structured public education programme in MSW management is recommended, so as to bring about a more sustainable management regime. As a result of resource and time limitations, it was not possible to complete several potential lines of investigation related to this study. To fully understand the character…

▼ The ever-increasing population in the metropolis of Accra, Ghana resulting in con-cerns for finding lasting solutions to manage large volumes of waste produced can be tackled through composting for urban agriculture. With insanitary land filling serving as the major disposal option in the metropolis, plans to build the first ever sanitary landfill facility in the metropolis calls for measures to be taken in order to prolong the lifespan of the facility. This therefore necessitates the need to look into an alternative means of diverting organic waste from landfills. The objective of this research is to re-view the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management situations in Accra Metropolitan Assembly upon which an investigation is made into the various process steps involved in aerobic windrow composting and also finding out the possibility for integrating composting with urban agriculture. The study relied mainly on secondary data obtained from books, published articles, governmental documents, internet, and master thesis reports on related topics. By the help of a causal loop diagram, the interdependence of various policy actions and sys-tem elements in the waste management process are linked to illustrate the possibility of a composting programme for urban agriculture. Even though the metropolis for some time back has been operating a centralized composting facility, the facility is confirmed to be closed down due to problems ema-nating from financial inadequacy, power failure and mechanical breakdown. The study delve into the process steps in windrow composting and finally identified potentials for composting in the metropolis but however enumerated constraints ranging from human and environmental health, financial, institutional, policy directives, to public and leadership attitudes as stumbling blocks to the implementation of a centralized composting scheme. It finally concluded that the metropolis has the potentials to embark on composting for urban agriculture however, until measures are taken to overcome these constraints, implementing a centralized composting scheme in the metropolis may not be a sustainable option. It is further recommended that whiles the city authorities continue to tackle the constraints to pave way for the implementation of the program, efforts must be made in promoting small scale composting that rely on manually operated tools to help reduce organic waste loads in the municipal waste stream.

▼ Food waste from grocery stores - An analysis of municipal management inSweden and a detailed study of the situation in Umeå municipality The objective of this thesis was to analyze the municipal management of food waste fromgrocery stores in Sweden in general and in Umeå municipality in particular. Furthermore theobjective was to account for the different waste treatment methods that can be used and toevaluate them from an environmental perspective. In order to analyze the municipalmanagement a survey was sent to all of the municipalities/municipal waste companies inSweden. A general comparison of treatment methods was carried out on the basis of ascientific review and a system analysis was performed in order to compare three differenttreatment alternatives for the food waste generated in grocery stores in Umeå. The surveyshowed that the legal definition of food waste from grocery stores is unclear and variesbetween municipalities. However, a majority of the municipalities that offer any kind ofsource separation include grocery stores in the offer. The packaged food waste is oftenincinerated even if source separation is available due to the difficulties with removingpackaging materials. Concerning treatment methods, the results show that composting is theenvironmentally least advantageous method for large-scale treatment of food waste.Incineration and anaerobic digestion are about equal in their environmental impact, but thelatter was found to be favorable in principle based on the fact that it, in theory, generates bothnutrient recycling and energy recovery. For the food waste generated in grocery stores inUmeå municipality, incineration at the Dåva power and heating plant was found to be thepreferable method rather than anaerobic digestion in Skellefteå and composting in Luleå.

▼ With an increasing demand for electrical energy, it is certain that the production will also increase, especially in rapid developing countries like India. Rapid industrialization is carving for more electrical energy, investment and suitable space for its infrastructure. But this development has to be sustainable keeping in mind the increasing global temperature due to pollution. India is the second largest population in the world and hence produces a lot of waste daily. As of now, most of the waste goes to the landfills and gets burnt there or decomposed, either way releasing greenhouse gases in the process and degrading the environment. The municipal waste management is a challenging process in developing countries because of non-availability of proper infrastructure. There are some methods to manage this waste, such as scientific landfills,Incineration, Biomethanation, Gasification, Pyrolysis and Plasma Arc Gasification.By Gasification the solid waste is converted into synthesis gas which can be used for chemical industries, power generation, transportation and industrial heating etc. This process shrinks the solid waste to slag or ash which can either be used to manufacture eco bricks or can be disposed of on landfill. Thus saving a lot of place from land filling and if used for power generation it does not release any considerable harmful gases into the environment making it a sustainable process and partially renewable source of energy. This project will estimate the capital requirement and procedure to setup a 1 MW gasification plant in Indian state of Telangana. In the study, the generation, composition, treatment and energy potential of solid waste have been studied. The technologies for waste-to-energy conversion have also been studied and the feasibility comparison of two leading technologies has been done.

▼ Global energy requirements are heavily dependent on fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas. With the expectation of fossil fuels being exhausted in the future, novel strategies need to be discovered for alternative energy generation. Biofuels such as acetone, butanol, ethanol, and hydrogen gas are gaining interest as high value energy sources. These fuels can be produced by anaerobic clostridia as metabolic byproducts of fermentation. The capability to produce these biofuels has been widely studied using glucose or other common feedstocks. Biofuels from renewable and industrial
waste feedstocks such as algae and cheese whey may have significant implications on the efficiency of biofuel production, where the price associated with feedstocks is considered a major bottleneck in biotechnology processes. Algae and cheese whey are both rich in organic nutrients and can be utilized by clostridia to produce not only biofuels, but also bioacids, which are considered fuel intermediate compounds. Additionally, understanding microbial communities both in the biosphere and within bioreactors can provide knowledge on microbial relationships and novel microbes, and provide knowledge to optimize engineered systems for biofuels and bioremediation strategies.
In this study, a comprehensive investigation of the Logan City Wastewater Lagoon System at the microbial level was executed. Microalgae were utilized for the production of acetone, butanol, and ethanol using Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum. High-throughput 454 pyrosequencing technology was utilized to understand the biogas-producing microbial consortium within an algal-fed anaerobic digester inoculated with lagoon sludge. This technology platform was also utilized to study the microbial diversity of a
municipal waste remediating community while probing for clostridia capable of producing biofuels. Bioproduct producing clostridia from this system were isolated and employed using cheese whey as feedstock for the production of hydrogen, ethanol, acetic acid, butyric acid, and lactic acid.
Integrating fundamental science with engineering strategies was demonstrated using this lagoon system. To optimize and fully understand and manage anaerobic microbial systems, an understanding of their phylogeny and their capabilities are vital for success at the industrial level for the production of high value bioproducts.

kalbama visame pasaulyje. Europos Sąjunga šiai priemonei skiria
ypatingą dėmesį, ilgalaikis tikslas - tapti atliekas perdirbančia
visuomene, siekiančia vengti atliekų susidarymo ir naudojančia
atliekas kaip išteklius. Šiame darbe analizuojamas Tauragės rajono
atliekų tvarkymas. Atliekų susidarymas ir tvarkymas – viena
svarbiausių aplinkosaugos problemų, atsiradusi vos įsikūrus
pirmosioms gyvenvietėms ir tapusi ypač aktuali šiuo metu. Atliekų
tvarkymas Lietuvoje kelia nemažai aplinkosaugos problemų, kurių
sprendimas reikalauja nemažų finansinių išteklių ir pastangų,
tačiau žiūrint į ateitį geriau investuoti į atliekų tvarkymą dabar,
nei į taršos padarinių likvidavimą vėliau. Vienam Tauragės
apskrities gyventojui vidutiniškai tenka apie 188 kg/metus mišrių
komunalinių atliekų, kaimuose - 90 kg/metus. Vidutinis atliekų
augimas 2004-2014 m. sieks 3%. Prognozuojamas atliekų kiekis 2014
metais – 25 tūkst. t. per metus.
Every year the concern about environment
care and its quality improvement, this is directly concerned with
healthy, clean and harmonic environment creation. The environmental
pollution is influenced by concentrated amount of waste. The theme
how to reduce these amounts of waste is discussed all over the
world. European Union is taking a special care for this problem.
Long-term purpose is to become waste recasting society, which is
eager to avoid of waste formation and instead of that using it as
the resources. This research is about the waste management of
Taurage district. Waste formation and clearing is one of the most
important problems of environment control, which appeared when the
first settlements were established and became very relevant in our
days. The waste disposal in Lithuania creates some problems for
environment protection and the solutions require big amount of
financial investments and efforts. But looking to the future it’s
better to invest into waste disposal now, than into liquidation of
pollution results later. For one inhabitant of Taurage district
average fall around 188 kg/year of mixed communal waste, for
villagers – 90 kg/year. The average increase of waste in period of
2004-2014 will reach 3%. The predictable amount of waste in 2014 –
25 thousand tones per year.

lėmusias skirtingą atliekų susidarymą ir tvarkymą Lietuvos
teritorijoje. Siekiant įgyvendinti minėtus uždavinius, buvo ieškoma
socialinių, ekonominių ar kitokių priežasčių lėmusių atliekų
susidarymo bei tvarkymo skirtumus regionuose. Nustatyta, kad
komunalinių atliekų susidaryme bei antrinių žaliavų surinkime,
didžiausią įtaką turi viešosios komunalinės paslaugos rodikliai.
Esant dideliam minėtos paslaugos procentui, žymiai keičiasi ir
surenkamų atliekų kiekiai. Remiantis Komunalinių atliekų susidarymo
prognozavimo ir atliekų tvarkymo sistemų tvarumo vertinimo vadovu,
komunalinių atliekų susidarymas turi būti prognozuojamas
atsižvelgiant į bendrojo vidaus produkto dydžius regione,
socialinius rodiklius: kūdikių mirtingą, vidutinę gyvenimo trukmę,
gyventojų užimtumo dalį žemės ūkyje, žmonių amžių, namų ūkio dydį.
Gamybinių bei pavojingų atliekų susidaryme lemiantys faktoriai yra
bazinių įmonių išsidėstymas Regionuose. Didžiausius atliekų
kiekinius rodiklius turi regionai, kuriuose dominuoja įmonės su
panašia veklos sritimi ar ženkliai turinčios didesnes apimtis

▼ Swedish power plants have in general an overcapacity which means that they must import waste from abroad. The imported fuel consists of several types of waste, but the majority originates from municipal and commercial waste. EFO is one of the leading fuel supplying and transport companies in Sweden. The company is owned by eight power plants located all around Sweden. The waste is purchased from other countries and then shipped to Sweden. During the unloading of the ship, when the cargo hatches opens, the malodourous gases will escape and be released in to the air. These malodours can travel quite far and are extremely unpleasant to people who live close by. The aim of this thesis was to suggest ways on how to prevent or reduce the emission of malodours during unloading of bales containing municipal waste. The aim of the project was to determine the causes of malodours, to identify the most common odorants in municipal waste, what properties they have, how they can be affected and how to prevent the formation of them. The problem was tackled by theoretical and practical studies. The theoretical study was a literature study and the practical study was observation at Mälarenergi combined heat and power plant. The results are presented as a number of suggestions for how to prevent or reduce the emission of malodours during unloading of bales containing municipal waste. These suggestions were divide in to the three categories Storage, Unloading and At Port. The suggestions varied from using better sorted waste to researching the possibility to use a portable tent covering the cargo ship during unloading. It was recommended that EFO should use both short- and long-term plans and also conduct further research on other ways to reduce emission of malodours. The suggestions were not tested so it cannot with certainty be determined if the suggestions will reduce or prevent emission of malodour. No laboratory tests were done on the waste. Therefore, the contents and concentrations could not be confirmed. However, it is almost certain that even if there were a slight difference it would not lead to a change of the current treatment process of the MSW. Obviously, there should have been multiple observations carried out at Mälarenergi`s power plant on various occasions and at different weather conditions. Several observations should also have been done on EFO´s other power plants to confirm that the core of the malodour emission problem is the same for all power plants. Basing suggestions on results taken from one instance might not give the correct answer to the problem. Common for malodours found in MSW is that they are formed as a product of degrading MSW. Reducing or stopping the degradation process, will prevent the formation of these compounds. This can be done either by lowering the temperature of the waste bales, altering the pH, decreasing the water content and increasing the level of Oxygen.

waste includes both organic and inorganic wastes as it is not often effectively segregated before disposal. The problem is acute in developing countries such as India. Bangalore city, with a population of about 10.18 million and more than 2000 industries, generates about 4,500 TPD of
municipal solid
waste. Of this Presently, various
municipal solid
waste processing units in Bangalore can handle only about 2100 TPD of
waste. Mavallipura landfill developed and operated by M/s. Ramky Environmental Engineers, located 40 km away from Bangalore, is being used for disposing of about 1000 TPD, the installed capacity being only 600 TPD of
waste. There are also a few dumps in around Bangalore due to historical reasons and insufficient capacity of various designated landfills.
To reclaim the old dump sites/closed landfill sites for infrastructural development, it is necessary to know their geotechnical characteristics. Within the Landfill, the characteristics of the
waste may change with depth due to degraded wastes as it has been dumped over a period of time. The physical parameters, chemical properties as well as the geotechnical behaviour of the
waste change with depth. MSW is known to be a heterogeneous material of varying constituent types and dimensions, containing elements that degrade with time. To consider MSW as a geo-material to support the foundation of structures such as buildings and pavement, an analysis of the bearing capacity of the foundation and further long-term settlement of MSW is essential. The MSW samples are retrieved from a Mavallipura landfill site, Bangalore and analysed for important geotechnical properties such as compaction characteristics, shear strength, permeability, compressibility behaviour and dynamic properties of MSW using ultrasonic and cyclic triaxial tests. This research thus aims to provide valuable information about landfill sites for reclamation, closure and infrastructural development after the closure of landfills. Scanty data are available on the geotechnical properties of
waste from landfill sites with varying degrees of degradation. This landfill site is selected as there is a huge environmental concern regarding the soil and groundwater contamination in the area and also can represent a typical landfill scenario in tropical regions.
Quantification, quality assessment, consequent treatment and management of leachate have become a monstrous problem world over. In this context, the present study envisages to study the physicochemical and biological characterization of representative urban
municipal landfill leachate and nearby water bodies and attempts to figure out relationships between the various parameters together with understanding the various processes…

Výsledky zároveň stanovily odhad potenciálu pro třídění komunálního odpadu.; The Bachelor’s thesis concerns analysis of composition and production of
waste in households. It also introduces legal system regarding Czech
municipal waste management and means of
waste processing. Another part of the thesis consists of case study, which explains used methodology and describes collected data of selected
waste types. The collected data on
municipal waste production in Czech households are processed in MS Excel. The results of the statistical methods used for analysis show differences in production of individual
municipal waste components in different types of households. The results also estimate the potential of
municipal waste sorting.

▼ Municipal solid
waste (MSW) production has significantly increased in the rapidly urbanizing developing world and also changed composition with increased decomposable organic fraction in MSW (OFMSW) and plastics content. This has stressed the environment in many ways while city managers and citizens have responded with various technological and management solutions leading to a need for scientific, environmental, technological and sustainability assessments of the emerging problems. This sets the research agenda and framework for this study wherein the MSW generation, composition, processing and treatment methods, open dumping practices, environmental liability, natural degradation, sustainability issues etc. have been studied for the city of Bangalore as a model for such an emerging problem. Results show that MSW generation ranged from 0.1-0.4 kg/person/day and the OFMSW content was >80% emerging predominantly from fruit, vegetable and food wastes. About 10-15% of daily MSW generated appeared to be haphazardly dumped around the city in ~700 small to large dumps ranging from 10-6,500 m2 with potential for large GHG emissions. Their spread and characteristics were assessed for 3 consecutive years using a novel rapid survey method developed at IISc involving motorcycle borne student volunteer teams, GPS enabled locating, physical measurements and satellite image interpretations. Results indicated that dump sites were of three types, ephemeral small sized in the core area (303) functioning as transfer stations, medium sized ones in outer areas that were closed rapidly with construction debris and very soon inhabited with dwellings and the larger and longer duration dumps (2-3 years, 393) in the peripheral regions within 10 km from the city administrative boundary. This method was compared with physical measurement and satellite imaging and gave very high level of accuracy and is hence suggested for other cities as well. A smaller fraction of MSW is also dumped in open drains that lead to choking and flooding of 3 locations and this was studied with some detail. The environmental footprint of such dumps were assessed by theoretical and experimental on-site and off-site approaches and experimental results show low GHG (CH4) emissions and emission factors that was largely attributable to the shallow depth of dumps (~0.7 m) and its low pH.
The decomposition rates were experimentally determined for open dump sites and drivers for decomposition monitored. By providing differential access to macro-fauna, meso-micro organisms and only soil contact in field scale experiments it was determined that the greatest loss in weight occurred primarily due to the rapid drying process that brings down decomposition within 6 days. During the early stages of decomposition, mostly micro with meso organisms are responsible and after 6 days, the moisture content falls below 60% making microbiological decomposition difficult and enabling other foraging organisms to take over. The weight loss (decay) could be patterned both on exponential…

▼ In order to address the growing waste concerns facing South Africa, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) published the National Waste Management Strategy in 2012. The ultimate aim of the strategy is to effect the realisation of the objectives of the National Environmental Management Waste Act (NEMWA). The NEMWA is a sector environmental law based on the waste management hierarchy and its provisions apply to waste management activities in all three government spheres amongst others. The NWMS provides for eight distinct goals with accompanying targets to be met by 2016. Some of these goals and targets speak directly to the solid waste management mandate of local government. Concerns about the capacity of municipalities to see the execution of this mandate however, raise questions about the likelihood of some NWMS goals and targets being met by 2016. The North West Province serves as a case in point where recent reports by the office of the Auditor General have highlighted significant non-compliance in local government with the provisions of the existing waste law and policy framework of South Africa. It appears form these reports that a number of performance gaps and capacity constraints exist as far as it concerns municipal solid waste management. Against this back ground the study questions the governance strategies necessary within the municipalities of the North West Province to: a) address the existing performance gaps and capacity constraints and b) progressively move towards meeting the NWMS goals and targets as far as it concerns solid waste management. The study will explore the objectives, goals and targets of the NWMS against the background of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and NEMWA, with a specific focus on solid waste management. The study will further review the documented performance gaps and capacity constraints as a far as it concerns solid waste management in municipalities in the North West province, specifically.

As the result, this situation challenges the home city of 6 million Vietnamese to reach out to experts and experienced organizations, looking for plausible solutions regarding its pollution issue. At the end of 2012, Hanoi authority approached Amsterdam with an appeal of a cooperation in solid
waste management, in which the transfer of Amsterdam’s technology of
Waste-to-Energy (WtE) is one of suggested options. However, there are various questions regarding the capability of Hanoi to invest in and handle the state-of-art technology, which has inspired the author for this research. The focus of this research is to assess the possibilities of cooperation between Amsterdam and Hanoi in the field of Solid
Waste Management, with the case study of technology transfer in
Waste-to-Energy.

Práce vychází ze statistických údajů o produkci komunálních odpadů, údajů o zastoupení drobného průmyslu v českých obcích a využívá korelační a regresní analýzy.; This thesis describes the current state of
waste management in Czech Republic and assesses the impact of small businesses on the production of
municipal waste in various Czech regions. The main objective of this thesis is to create a model of production of
municipal waste with a focus on so-called commercial
waste or an industrial
waste, which is part of the
waste, produced from
municipal waste management systems. The work is based on statistical data of

▼ Vermicomposting has been proposed as a sustainable technique for managing various types of organic wastes. The aims of this study were to test the feasibility of vermicomposting two of Canterbury’s problematic wastes (organic
municipal waste and the used animal bedding) and to evaluate the vermicompost generated from them for use in horticultural production.
The research first examined how changes in
waste proportions and types affected earthworm growth and reproduction. Vermicompost quality in terms of its nutrient and agronomic values was then considered, through the use of a series of pot experiments with Pak Choi plants. These experiments investigated influencing factors such as the type of medium, source of vermicompost, application rate, application method, processing method and chemical fertiliser addition on plant growth.
The results of the vermicomposting experiments showed that the two
waste streams could be a valuable food source for earthworms, and it found that the ideal combination in terms of earthworm growth and reproduction and final vermicompost quality was a mix of 80% fresh shredded
waste and 20% used animal bedding. The vermicompost produced from this mix generally had good agronomic value, but a low nitrogen content.
Coir had high vermicompost use efficiency, and plants grown in coir with a 10% vermicompost addition grew as well as plants in a standard potting mix. Mixing chemical fertiliser and vermicompost together with coir led to further improvements in plant growth, compared with the use of vermicompost alone. These results demonstrated that it is feasible to recycle the two problematic wastes by vermicomposting, and that the vermicompost produced is beneficial as a plant fertiliser. Coir could be a promising material for use in horticultural production when combined with vermicompost. However, further research is required to investigate ways of using these resources in the most efficient manner.
