▼ Reactive and resonant loads have been used from the very beginning of antenna design to improve impedance matching, bandwidth, and current distributions on
antennas, and to create multiband and reconfigurable
antennas.Trap loaded dipoles are one of the simplest resonator-loaded
antennas and are traditionally loaded with either an inductor-capacitor pair or a quarter wavelength stub integrated into a dipole or monopole to create a second operating frequency at the trap resonant frequency. Adding resonant loads to
antennas will only increase in popularity and practicality as filtennas are more often used for their SWaP improvements, better noise performance, and potential for additional degrees of reconfigurability. In this dissertation, I demonstrate that resonant loads can introduce lossy modes, and I significantly revise and expand the theory of the basic trap dipole antenna, which is a valuable aid in designing resonator loaded
antennas with higher degrees of complexity. Based on the new analysis, I demonstrate novel series LC trap dipoles, dual-band inductor loaded trap dipoles, and parallel and series LC trap slots. The newly developed design process also allows for the integration of any kind of resonator or reactive load to be used to create trap style
antennas. A reconfigurable load is also used to demonstrate novel tunable trap
antennas. The design procedure is ultimately adaptable to any resonators that can be practically fabricated and physically incorporated into the antenna structure.

▼ The use of fractal geometries has significantly impacted many areas of science and engineering; one of which is
antennas.
Antennas using some of these geometries for various telecommunications applications are already available commercially. The use of fractal geometries has been shown to improve several antenna features to varying extents. Yet a direct corroboration between antenna characteristics and geometrical properties of underlying fractals has been missing. This research work is intended as a first step to fill this gap.
In terms of antenna performance, fractal shaped geometries are believed to result in multi-band characteristics and reduction of antenna size. Although the utility of different fractal geometries varies in these aspects, nevertheless they are primary motives for fractal antenna design. For example, monopole and dipole
antennas using fractal Sierpinski gaskets have been widely reported and their multiband characteristics have been associated with the self-similarity of the geometry. However this qualitative explanation may not always be realized, especially with other fractal geometries. A quantitative link between multiband characteristics of the antenna and a mathematically expressible feature of the fractal geometry is needed for design optimization. To explore this, a Koch curve is chosen as a candidate geometry, primarily because its similarity dimension can be varied from 1 to 2 by changing a geometrical parameter (indentation angle). Extensive numerical simulations presented here indicate that this variation has a direct impact on the primary resonant frequency of the antenna, its input resistance at this frequency, and the ratio of the first two resonant frequencies. In other words, these antenna features can now be quantitatively linked to the fractal dimension of the geometry. This finding can lead to increased flexibility in designing
antennas using these geometries. These results have been experimentally validated.
The relationship between the fractal dimension and multiband characteristics of fractal shaped
antennas has been verified using other fractal geometries as well. The physical appearance of fractal a binary tree can be varied by either changing the branching angle, or using different scale factors between the lengths of the stem and branches of the tree. While the change in angle does not affect its fractal dimension, the scale factor does. A similar trend is observed in the multiband characteristics of monopole
antennas using these geometries. This confirms similar findings based on Koch curves. It may however be mentioned that this correlation between multiband nature of the antenna and the fractal dimension of the geometry could not yet be linked across different geometries having the same dimension.
Apart from these theoretical findings, this research is also directed towards designing
antennas with unconventional features. The multiband characteristic of the Sierpinski gasket antenna has been experimentally modified, for octave bandwidth using a…

▼ The explosive growth of wireless communications has significantly increased the need for compact antennas, which tend to behave as narrowband, inefficient and low-gain radiators. Reliable techniques for the design, fabrication and measurement of small antennas are highly desirable. The significance of antennas to the proper function of advanced mobile terminals cannot be overemphasized. Rapid advances in mobile and personal communication networks have caused antenna design targeting cellphones, portable computers, PDAs, smartphones and RFIDs to flourish.
Contrary to the above, industrial and academic research has displayed little interest in the antenna system of a special category of portable terminals: nodes comprising Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Wireless sensors are autonomous, tiny devices built around specifications that opt for the longest possible network lifetime. A vital prerequisite to the proper function of wireless microsensors is the availability of miniature, energy-efficient antenna systems covering the application band. The design, development, and characterization of such antennas are the major topics addressed in the Thesis. The antennas were built in printed circuit technology, since PCBs are a realistic and viable solution to the fabrication of wireless sensors.
A study of Euclidean and Fractal printed monopoles during the initial stages of the Thesis showed that their achievable miniaturization limits are constrained by a short-circuiting phenomenon. A new class of antennas that alleviate the problem are Analytical Geometry Antennas. The sinusoidal antenna was initially developed, which is inherently small, wideband and efficient. Particular attention was given to the effect of the ground plane (GNDP) which, contrary to what is generally understood, is an integral part of the overall radiator. A flexible figure-of-merit (FoM) was suggested, to merge the fundamental properties of small antennas into a single quantity. The genre of Analytical Antennas was augmented by the addition of Chebyshev antennas, which combine inductive and capacitive (top-hat) loading and demonstrate that the choice of analytical function can produce gains in antenna response. The study of Analytical Antennas was completed with the equally innovative, multi-band, generalized-sinusoidal Chirp antenna. The Chirp radiator introduces the concept of Analytical Self-Similarity.
In dense arrays, the mutual coupling problem is extremely severe, rendering coupling suppression techniques indispensable. The technique proposed herein works at the RF circuit level, is easily embedded in the analog RF part of the transceiver, and targets robust, energy-efficient communication between wireless sensor nodes. Getting into the specifics, a defect was inserted (etched away) into the ground plane, occupying minimal real estate in the ground region between adjacent elements. The defected ground structure (DGS) technique also recovers the operating bandwidth that is partially lost due to coupling. It is proven that the DGS technique…
