▼ A modal-based global method for identification, localization and quantification of damage of shear frame structures is presented in this thesis. The method involves identification of modal parameters from the vibration responses of the structure only (output-only) using a combination of Natural Excitation Technique (NExT) and Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), and determination of stiffness values using very few identified modes by employing a least squares solution of the eigenvalue problem. Finally, damage is indicated by comparing the stiffnesses of the (possibly) damaged structure with that of the undamaged structure.
The implementation of NExT-ERA requires a reference channel and an order of the state-space model for modal identification, but several limitations of using a single reference channel and a particular order of the state-space model have been identified from the investigation of this study. To overcome the limitations, a new approach called Multi-Reference Based Mode Selection is proposed in this study. The approach makes use of all the available degree-of-freedoms (DOFs) as reference channels, but one at a time, to identify the best representative modes of the structure. An autonomous modal identification algorithm is also developed for fast online application of the approach.
The stiffness values of a shear frame structure can be determined by employing the least squares solution of the eigenvalue problem. Although the solution can be obtained by using a single natural frequency and the corresponding mode shape, it has been found from this study that the errors in the determination of stiffness values are significant when just one mode is used in the calculation. At least two modes are required to determine the stiffness values with reasonable accuracy. Consequently, two modes were used in the determination of stiffness values using the least squares solution of the eigenvalue problem.
The proposed damage detection methodology was implemented on the analytical Phase I and the experimental Phase II of the IASC-ASCE SHM benchmark problem. The negligible errors in the determination of modal parameters affirm that the methodology is robust in the presence of noise, but the methodology is found to be mildly sensitive to modeling errors, and because of that minor damage locations cannot be identified with certainty. Overall, from the investigation, it can be reported that the proposed methodology has an accuracy of around 90% in damage localization, and the determined severities of damages using it are very close to the actual ones.

▼ This work discusses the architecture of the second generation Chevrolet Volt as well as its components. It presents the development of offline optimal operating point maps for all the operating modes of the vehicle. It discusses the development of a novel term for defining the efficiency of the hybrid modes which was used as the cost function for the optimization. These maps were then used to create the best
mode map for the hybrid modes and compared with the one from General Motors in one of their publications.
It also discusses the development of a real-time control strategy for
mode selection if the predicted velocity for the next few seconds is known to the controller. The algorithm uses the OOP maps for simplifying the model predictive control problem and converting it into the best pathfinding problem. With the new
mode selection algorithm, the results show that fuel consumption reductions are possible in both highway and urban drive cycles.

▼ The implementation of RFID technology has been subject to ever-increasing popularity in relation to the traceability of items as one of the most advance technologies. Implementing such a technology leads to an increase in the visibility management of products. Notwithstanding this, RFID communication performance is potentially greatly affected by interference between the RFID devices. It is also subject to auxiliary costs in investment that should be considered. Hence, seeking a cost-effective design with a desired communication performance for RFID-enabled systems has become a key factor in order to be competitive in today‟s markets. This study introduce a cost and performance-effective design for a proposed RFID-enabled passport tracking system through the development of a multi-objective model that takes in account economic, operation and social criteria. The developed model is aimed at solving the design problem by (i) allocating the optimal numbers of related facilities that should be established and (ii) obtaining trade-offs among three objectives: minimising implementation and operational costs; minimising RFID reader interference; and maximising the social impact measured in the number of created jobs. To come closer to the actual design in terms of considering the uncertain parameters, a fuzzy multi-objective model was developed. To solve the multi-objective optimization problem model, two solution methods were used respectively (epsilon constrain and linear programming) to select the best Pareto solution and a decision-making method was developed to select the final trade-off solution. Moreover, this research aims to provide a user-friendly decision making tool for selecting the best vendor from a group which submitted their tenders for implementing a proposed RFID- based passport tracking system. In addition to that a real case study was applied to examine the applicability of the developed model and the proposed solution methods. The research findings indicate that the developed model is capable of presenting a design for an RFID- enabled passport tracking system. Also, the developed decision-making tool can easily be used to solve similar vendor selection problem. Research findings demonstrate that the proposed RFID-enabled monitoring system for the passport tracking system is economically feasible. The study concludes that the developed mathematical models and optimization approaches can be a useful decision-maker for tackling a number of design and optimization problems for RFID system using artificial intelligence mathematical algorithm based techniques.

▼ A
reference check is a
selection tool that used quite often by employers for identifying their potential employees. It has often been introduced in Human Resource Management textbooks, management articles, or consulting companiesâ training courses. However, when compared with other
selection tools, a
reference check obviously lacks both systematic researches and empirical studies to prove its credibility.
This study is to gain an understanding as to the reason why an employer undertakes a
reference check; how employers undertake a
reference check and the overall procedure; and the influence and beneficial results of
reference check. And I interviewed 12 HR professionals to collect their personal experiences about
reference check.
The results show that a
reference check is one of the guarantee mechanisms for employers for not hiring an unqualified candidate. Employers take references from referees regarding their comments on applicants, who have already passed several
selection processes and
selection tools, in order to filter out the applicants who have some unfound problems in precious
selection processes or tools. With regards to the hired applicants, employers could understand more about their personalities, strengths and weaknesses from the
reference check results.
Normally applicants would not list referees with whom they have had bad relations, so employers might undertake an unofficial
reference check through their own personal network to collect information that will not be biased by good relations between applicant and referees. The results also show that some applicants may overestimate their good relationships with their referees, and list the referees who give their negative evaluations on applicants. In general, the referees who are familiar with the applicant, and who are willing to provide a
reference along with those who undertake the
reference check in a very sensitive manner, are the two key factors that make the
reference check work well.

▼ My thesis consists of three chapters that study relationships between college majors and multi-dimensional skills.
Chapter 2 examines the sources of wage penalties for working outside one's major field of study. Previous papers show that workers in a job which is unrelated to their major field of study tend to earn significantly lower wages than those in a related job. I use the 1993 National Survey of College Graduates and the O*NET to divide the sources of wage penalty into the levels of basic skills required in a job and the mismatch in major-specific knowledge. I find that the average wage penalty is 9% after conditioning on individual characteristics, such as degree type and field of study. Around 45% of the wage penalty stems from differences in the required levels of basic skills between related and unrelated jobs. I also find that the results are heterogeneous across degree types and fields of study. A mismatch in major-specific knowledge has a large effect on wages of workers with an advanced or specialized degree and on those who majored in Computer and Math Sciences or Engineering.
Chapter 3 estimates skill growth during college by major using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97) and the O*NET. To capture both the type and quantity of accumulated skills, I assume that each major increases a general cognitive skill and a major-specific skill. I further allow for individual heterogeneity in skill growth. I take a task-based approach and use occupation choice to estimate skill growth in general cognitive skill. To deal with noisy skill measurements and endogeneity, a dynamic factor model is constructed. The results show a substantial growth of general cognitive skill in all majors, but with large differences across majors. I find different effects of pre-college skill levels on skill growth by major, but the differences are not large. The contribution of major-specific skill growth to wage growth is small compared to that of general cognitive skill growth.
Chapter 4 examines what skills are most closely associated with male college workers becoming managers from the perspective of human capital theory, with a focus on cognitive and social skills. I first construct a social task intensity measure using the American Community Survey 2010-2017 and the O*NET and document that management jobs tend to have high levels of social and cognitive task intensity. I then use the NLSY97 and analyze the transition patterns into management jobs. Most workers start their careers in non-management jobs, but workers who become managers relatively quickly tend to have jobs involving intense social tasks in an early stage of their careers, which may lead to a greater increase in their social skill. Business & Economics majors are more likely to become managers, but the results suggest that this mostly stems from skills other than social skill.

▼ Portfolio selection theory, developed by Markowitz (1952), is one of the best known and widely applied methods for allocating funds among possible investment choices, where investment decision making is a trade-off between the expected return and risk of the portfolio. Many portfolio selection models have been developed on the basis of Markowitz's theory. Most of them assume that complete investment information is available and that it can be accurately extracted from the historical data. However, this complete information never exists in reality. There are many kinds of ambiguity and vagueness which cannot be dealt with in the historical data but still need to be considered in portfolio selection. For example, to address the issue of uncertainty caused by estimation errors, the robust counterpart approach of Ben-Tal and Nemirovski (1998) has been employed frequently in recent years. Robustification, however, often leads to a more conservative solution. As a consequence, one of the most common critiques against the robust counterpart approach is the excessively pessimistic character of the robust asset allocation. This thesis attempts to develop new approaches to improve on the respective performances of the robust counterpart approach by incorporating additional investment information sources, so that the optimal portfolio can be more reliable and, at the same time, achieve a greater return.

▼ We study energy-efficient power allocation among relays for lifetime maximization
in a dual-hop relay network operated by amplify-and-forward relays with battery
limitations. Power allocation algorithms are proposed for three different scenarios.
First, we study the relay cooperation case where all the relays jointly support
transmissions for a targeted data rate. By exploring the correlation of time-varying
relay channels, we develop a prediction-
based relay cooperation method for optimal
power allocation strategy to improve the relay network lifetime over existing methods
that do not predict the future channel state, or assume the current channel state
remains static in the future.
Next, we consider energy-efficient relay
selection for the single source-destination
case. Assuming finite transmission power levels, we propose a stochastic shortest path
approach which gives the optimal relay
selection decision to maximize the network
lifetime. Due to the high computational complexity, a suboptimal prediction-
based
relay
selection algorithm, directly coming from previous problem, is created.
Finally, we extend our study to multiple source-destination case, where relay
selection
needs to be determined for each source-destination pair simultaneously. The
network lifetime in the presence of multiple source-destination pairs is defined as the
longest time when all source-destination pairs can maintain the target transmission
rate. We design relay-to-destination mapping algorithms to prolong the network lifeii
time. They all aim at maximizing the perceived network lifetime at the current time
slot. The optimal max-min
approach and suboptimal user-priority
based approach
are proposed with different levels of computational complexity.

▼ Cloud computing provides on-demand resources and removes the boundaries of resources' physical locations. It allows vendors to save upfront infrastructure costs and focus on features that discriminate their
businesses. Growing number of provided services makes manual selection of the most suitable service time consuming and very hard which requires expertise. The large number of features and properties that the services are characterized by makes automatic service selection challenging.
In this thesis we present QuARAM Service Recommender, a self-adaptive Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) service selection system that recommends a list of suitable services for cloud application deployment based on an application's requirements and the customer's preferences. The process starts with automatic extraction of an application's features, requirements and preferences and ends with a list of potential services for the application deployment. TOSCA provides a standard way of specifying the cloud application. Defined Normative Types in TOSCA do not cover defining all the requirements, features, and customer's preferences. In this thesis we propose an extension to the TOSCA Normative Types, so our system can extract all the information required for service selection automatically from the specification of the application.
We use case-based reasoning to provide a recommendation of suitable services for application deployment. This method can be beneficial for cloud customers in service selection even when lacking complete knowledge about their application or features offered by cloud services. It can efficiently handle heterogeneous attributes that characterize cloud services and the requirements of cloud applications and
is able to integrate the customer's preferences through assigning weights to these attributes. The feedback from both customers and the monitoring system is used to automatically adapt the system behavior and enhance the quality of recommendations. We use MCDM method for cloud service selection when there are not sufficient cases in the system case base and we use clustering to handle the problem of a large search space. We further describe a service consolidation method to improve the resource utilization and reduce the total service price. Our step-by-step case study demonstrates that an automatic IaaS service selection using a combination of all the proposed approaches is practical and achievable.

Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) has become a major tool for the analysis of highly turbulent flows in complex geometries. However, due to the steadily increase of computational resources, the amount of data generated by well-resolved numerical simulations is such that it has become very challenging to manage them with traditional data processing tools. In Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), this emerging problematic leads to the same "Big Data" challenges as in the computer science field.…

▼ Opportunistic
selection algorithms have grown in importance as next generation wireless systems strive towards higher data rates and spectral efficiencies. For example, in orthogonal frequency division multiple access(OFDMA), the system bandwidth is divided into many sub channels. For each sub channel, the user with the highest channel gain is opportunistically assigned to it. .Likewise, in a
multi-source,
multi-destination (MSD) cooperative relay system, a relay node must be assigned for every source-destination (SD) pair. The assignment decisions are
based on local channel knowledge and must be fast so as to maximize the time available for data transmission.
We develop novel multiple access
based splitting-
based selection algorithms for OFDMA and MSD systems. These systems are unique in that the same user and relay can be the most suitable one for multiple sub channels and multiple SD pairs, respectively. For OFDMA systems, we propose an algorithm called Split Select that assigns for every sub channel the user with the highest channel gain over it. For MSD systems, we propose a contention-
based en masse assignment (CBEA) algorithm that assigns to each SD pair a relay that is capable of aiding it. Both Split Select and CBEA are fast and scale well with the number of nodes. For example, Split Select requires just
2.2 slots, on average, to assign a sub channel to its best user even when there are an asymptotically large number of contending users. Likewise, CBEA often takes far less than one slot, on average, to assign a relay to each SD pair.

▼ The efficiency of animals in converting feed to products is one of the main factors influencing the profitability of beef and dairy production. However, inclusion of feed efficiency as a new trait into the breeding objective requires re-estimation of all economic weights for other traits unless it is independent of them. A convenient measure of efficiency is residual feed intake (RFI) which is the difference between actual intake and predicted feed intake and hence is independent of other traits used in the prediction. RFI and other measures of feed efficiency are expensive to measure because they requires precise measurements of individual feed consumption and this has limited direct selection for feed efficiency in cattle. Genomic selection, using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) genotypes to estimate breeding values without measuring feed intake on selection candidates, could overcome this limitation. However, genomic selection requires a reference population that has been measured for RFI and genotyped. The limited size of reference populations, due to the high costs for RFI measures, currently results in modest prediction accuracies. The aim of the research in this thesis is to increase the accuracies of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) for RFI and to find biological processes and genes associated with RFI variation using genomic data (RNA and DNA).
Chapter 1 reviews methods of selecting for RFI and concludes that genomic selection offers the best opportunity. Chapter 2 combines data from multiple breeds to increase the size of the reference population. We show that there is substantial SNP × breed interaction variance but, despite this, the combined reference increases the accuracy of GEBV especially for breeds with a small number of animals in the reference. An alternative analysis used the beef cattle data to identify SNPs with a larger than average effect on RFI and gave these SNPs extra weight in calculating GEBVs for Holstein cattle. This increased the accuracy of GEBV in Holsteins.
The results showed the highly polygenic nature of RFI. However, to get most benefit from a multiple breed reference population, it is necessary to use methods of analysis that concentrate on SNPs near causal variants. Therefore, an effort was made to find genes and SNPs that have an effect on RFI using gene expression measured by RNA sequencing data (RNA-Seq) from Angus bulls (muscle and liver samples) and Holstein cows (liver and blood samples).
Chapter 3 reports many genes whose expression was correlated with RFI. These genes were represented in wide range of biological processes such as energy metabolism and proteolysis. However, correlations do not prove causation and there is no guarantee that SNPs in these genes influence RFI.
SNPs might influence RFI by changing the expression of the genes, so in Chapter 4, RNA-Seq data was analysed to find cis acting expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL). A traditional local eQTL analysis with allele specific expression (ASE) was compared and both…

This dissertation aims to investigate teacher’s competences in the face of various contextual changes in the Vietnamese tertiary education which require new perspectives and approaches in curriculum development. These competences are analyzed in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, 2001) on teachers’ professional competences and competent teachers. Data were collected from distributing survey questionnaires to in-service and pre-service teachers, interviews with university instructors. Data analysis reveals limitations in the current curriculum and helps to identify areas of competences that teachers of French in Vietnam need to develop. The research results consist of a competence framework with detailed descriptions for competence-based teacher training programs to be implemented.

▼ My research is composed of three studies focused on providing decision modeling and analytical tools with the objective of protecting public health. The first study introduces an agent-
based simulation platform that serves as a decision support system for crowd management in public venues. I propose a new implementation of agent-
based simulation with improvement on four aspects: path planning, collision avoidance, emotion modeling and optimization with simulation. The deliverables of this study also include a complete simulation platform for researcher’s use. The second study applies a data-driven informatics and machine learning
approach to quantify the outcome of practice variance of medical care providers. The study investigates the safety and efficacy of a large-dose, needle-
based epidural anesthesia technique for parturient women. Machine learning model is proposed as the classifier to predict the occurrence of hypotension. Further, machine learning
approach is applied to predict the outcome of epidural anesthesia, uncovering the important factors of a successful practice. Quantification of the effect of practice variance and medicine usage is provided. The findings from this investigation facilitate delivery improvement and establish an improved clinical practice guideline for training and for dissemination of safe practice. The third study proposes the application of convolutional neural network (CNN) in the prediction of antigenicity of influenza viruses (A/H3N2) and vaccine recommendation. The study systematically explores the ways of representation of hemagglutinin (HA) besides using binary digit or character as widely applied in other researches. Heuristic optimization is applied to optimize the
selection of AAindex as well as the structure of CNN. Contrasting to other state-of-the-art approaches, the model offers better coverage in vaccine recommendation and has superior performance in accurate prediction of antigenicity.

Overfishing affects the structures and dynamics of many marine ecosystems, as well as the associated ecosystem services. To tackle this issue, many scientists and managers are calling for an ecosystem-based fisheries management, integrating the complexity of harvested ecosystems, and based on ecological and economic sustainability objectives. In that perspective, our aim is to build an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, reconciling biodiversity and resilience preservation with the maintenance of high yields and profits. To this aim, we develop bio-economic models of mixed fisheries, composed of species that are either independent or in trophic interactions. We show that maximizing the aggregate catches or profits of a mixed fishery can threaten the biodiversity and resilience of harvested ecosystems, but that economic instruments can address these issues. In uncertain systems, risk aversion also helps reconciling constrasting management goals. We then apply multi-objective management approaches to identify the best strategies from an ecological and economic point of view. Chosen strategies depend on managers' preferences: favoring production implies to focus harvest on small trophic levels, while favoring biodiversity or resilience implies to focus on higher trophic levels. We therefore suggest that diversified fishing patterns could allow…

Perception is the way by which we know the outside world. Thanks to our perceptions we are able to interact with our environment and to achieve various everyday life actions as locating or moving in an environment, or recognizing objects. Perception is not passive whereas sensations are, it has active components. In particular, perception can be oriented for a specific purpose allowing to filter data and to take care only…

▼ In today’s competitive environment, it is important that decision makers select appropriate suppliers for multiple products in effective supply chain management. Multiple suppliers can reduce cost, decrease production lead time, increase customer satisfaction and strengthen corporate competitiveness. The objective of this thesis is to solve a multiple-objective model of multiple-supplier
selection and inventory optimization. Three objectives are considered which are minimization of total cost which consists of purchasing cost, fixed cost for choosing specific suppliers, and inventory cost, maximization of total product quality, and minimization of total number of late delivery products. In the model of this thesis, each supplier has limited capacity to supply products; purchasing budget and storage capacity of retailers are also considered. The retailer faces deterministic demand and lead time for each product from each supplier. Inventory control is an important part of the object. It is guided by the continuous (r, Q) policy, and shortage is allowed. Inventory cost in this model includes ordering cost, holding cost and shortage cost. Non-preemptive goal programming is used to solve the multiple-objective problem. A numerical example is given to illustrate the use of the developed model.

▼ With the increasing number of mobile devices and the dramatic increase in network traffic, the mobile communication networks are facing spectrum efficiency or spectrum utilization problem. At same time increasing the spectrum is very difficult. Therefore, to enhance the system data flow and reduce the load, between Device to Device (D2D) communications technology in recent years has more attention.
D2D does not transfer through base station and can communication directly. But adding D2D in cellular networks becomes more complex. D2D can reuse cellular UEâs spectrum and enhance spectrum efficiency, but cellular UEs also suffer serious interference from D2D. It is necessary to consider the quality of each UEs in order to avoid interference caused by D2D, and how to coordinate information and signal strength of each device used for D2D communication is very important.
Based on previous studies, it has not been considered whether there is a serious effect to meet demand for resources for each UE, and whether all UE allocation of resources and management by eNB will result in time delay. By taking advantage of distributed architecture using cluster
approach we improved the effectiveness of the cellular network, by dispersing in cluster management and resource allocation through Cluster Head. Because Cluster Head consumes large amounts of energy, in this paper we consider energy issues and increase the number of Cluster Heads with the growing number of UEs.
In this paper we propose the interference suppression mechanism and expand services coverage by introducing Cluster Heads. Regardless of serious interference or at cell edge of the UE our goal is to meet demand for services. To combine the advantages of D2D and eNB reduce time delay and enhance D2D user satisfaction ratio.

▼ Prospective memory (PM) refers to a person’s ability to remember to do something in the future. It is a complex behaviour that is essential for the daily functioning of young and old alike. Despite its importance in everyday life, few studies have sought to examine the role of personality on PM performance using a
multi-trait
multi-method
approach in young adults. The current study aimed to investigate the differential roles of the Big 5 personality traits on event- and time-
based PM performance using multiple measurement methods. In addition, the study aimed to add to the current PM and personality literature by addressing several of the identified methodological limitations of the literature as outlined by Uttl and colleagues (2013). Results demonstrated few strong relationships between PM subtypes (event and time-
based) performance indicators, though performance on the lab-
based event-
based PM task was stronger than on the lab-
based time-
based PM task even after controlling for ongoing task performance. Participants were also found to perform better on lab-
based rather than naturalistic PM tasks. Naturalistic and self-report PM measures were significantly related to each other, but not to lab-
based PM. Regarding personality, the relationship between specific personality traits and PM performance differed depending on the PM subtype and/or measurement method being investigated with conscientiousness, memory aid strategy use, and substance use engagement being found to best predict self-reported PM errors in daily life. The current study demonstrated that each PM measurement method taps into different aspects of behavioural and cognitive functioning. Without the use of all three measurement methods, whilst also considering the individuality of the client, researchers and clinicians may be doing a disservice to individuals with true PM difficulties as they may overlook important factors contributing to their poorer performance.

▼ Cyber-Physical Systems(CPS) are a group of systems that are involved with both physical processes and computational processes. The interaction of physical components and computational components makes it difficult to analyze, design and verify this type of systems. The problem becomes more complex when certain input or decision of these systems must be initiated by human. Cyber-Physical Systems with human operator in the loop are called Embedded Human Systems(EHS). To ensure the safety of EHS such as traffic control systems, space shuttle control systems, nuclear power plant control systems and so on, it is critically important for human operators to fully understand both physical and computational processes. However, humans are usually easily overwhelmed by concurrent information, the situation becomes worse when it comes to complex EHS with timing constraints. This dissertation proposes a domain specific modeling language that takes advantage of hybrid system abstraction to retain important system behaviors and automatically generates self-configured system verification software. The verification software could effectively reduce the computation time with parallel scheduling algorithm, thus the computation process that violates the design protocol can be halted without wasting computation resources. The modeling environment also allows user to conveniently set design constraints to avoid flaws early in prototype phase and reuse the available model for a family of different platforms. Several verification results of different platforms are shown to demonstrate the efficiency and reusability of the modeling environment.

▼ Bandwidth enhancement of low-profile omnidirectional, electrically-small antennas has evolved from the design and construction of AM transmitter towers eighty years ago to current market demand for battery-powered personal communication devices. Electrically-small antenna theory developed with well-known approximations for characterizing radiation properties of antenna structures that are fractions of the radiansphere. Current state-of-the-art wideband small antennas near kaH1 have achieved multiple-octave impedance bandwidths when utilizing volume-efficient designs. Significant advances in both the power and miniaturization of microelectronics have created a second possible
approach to enhance bandwidth. Frequency agility, via switch tuning of reconfigurable structures, offers the possibility of the direct integration of high-speed electronics to the antenna structure. The potential result would provide a means to translate a narrow instantaneous bandwidth across a wider operating bandwidth. One objective of the research was to create a direct comparison of the passive-
multi-resonant and active-reconfigurable approaches to enhance bandwidth. Typically, volume-efficient, wideband antennas are unattractive candidates for low-profile applications and conversely, active electronics integrated directly antenna elements continue to introduce problematic loss mechanisms at the proof-of-concept level. The dissertation presents an analysis method for wide bandwidth self-resonant antennas that exist in the 0.5dkad1.0 range. The combined
approach utilizes the quality factor extracted directly from impedance response data in addition to near-and-far field modal analyses. Examples from several classes of antennas investigated are presented with practical boundary conditions. The resultant radiation properties of these antenna-finite ground plane systems are characterized by an appreciable percentage of radiated power outside the lowest-order
mode. Volume-efficient structures and non-omnidirectional radiation characteristics are generally not viable for portable devices. Several examples of passive structures, representing different antenna classes are investigated. A PIN diode, switch-tuned low-profile antenna prototype was also developed for the comparison which demonstrated excessive loss in the physical prototype. Lastly, a passive, low-profile
multi-resonant antenna element with monopole radiation is introduced. The structure is an extension of the planar inverted-F antenna with the addition of a capacitance-coupled parasitic to enhance reliable operation in unknown environments.

▼ Green roofs are engineered infrastructures that allow to have vegetation above the ground providing social and environmental benefits in the urban landscape. Contrastingly from the northern hemisphere countries, Ecuador’s green roof industry is just emerging. The provision of suitable plant species is critical for creating sustainable, high performance and low maintenance green roofs and enhancing their development. The current study sought to create a plant list for green roofs in Quito, Ecuador using the plant trait and habitat template approaches combined with a bioclimatic approach. The combination of approaches found 26 suitable native species for green roofs. The development of a bioclimatic approach allowed the creation of a refined selection in the absence of information on specific physiological tolerances or plant traits. The suitable species were from a wide diversity of families, plant forms and uses, creating opportunities for designing functional and aesthetic environments. The results provide valuable information for green roof industry to create more sustainable infrastructure, which might reduce maintenance and costs and overcome barriers to green roof uptake. The development of this approach opens new options of identifying the potential tolerances of plants without extensive knowledge of their traits or physiology. Further studies with experimental approaches are now recommended to test and implement these species on green roofs in Quito.

▼ The management of aquatic ecosystems is important to preserve the ecosystem services provided to humanity. The development of environmental assessment has allowed the management and therefore protection of these important resources. Reference Condition Approach (RCA) bioassessments using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators are common tools that provide a means of determining impairment of stream sites by comparing exposed test sites to relatively unexposed reference sites. RCA predictive models are commonly developed at the scale of drainage basin, ecoregion, or political region (i.e. United Kingdom or Australian state), and test site assessment is restricted within the spatial boundaries of the model. If test site assessment can be applied outside the spatial scope of the model, insofar that the environmental characteristics are similar, it would reduce extensive sampling i.e. remote northern locations and time-consuming development of numerous models. The overall goal of my study was to assess whether a predictive model applied across a larger spatial extent, and therefore encompassing a greater area for test sites to be assessed, is as effective as models generally developed within smaller geographic regions such as within a basin or watershed.
Benthic invertebrates and habitat data from three areas in Canada were examined: the Attawapiskat River basin in northern Ontario, the Fraser River basin in British Columbia and the Yukon River basin. The RCA predictive model method was used in this study that determines the relationships between benthic community groups and the environmental descriptors that explain them and the Benthic Assessment of Sediment (BEAST) assessment method to compare test sites with a physical similar group of reference sites. The performance of the bioassessment was assessed using a common set of simulated impact (“simpacted”) sites with known responses
iv
of taxa to disturbance. Models for each basin and a multi-basin model were compared on prediction performance, parsimony, and sensitivity. The multi-basin model had comparable prediction performance (65% correctly classified) to single basin models (56-72%) but lacked the sensitivity that models for single basins possessed. The Attawapiskat was the most parsimonious with only 2 predictors but the Fraser and multi-basin models explained the most variance with more predictors (Wilks’ λ = 0.06 and 0.1 for the Fraser and multi-basin models, respectively). The results of this study showed that sites can be assessed outside the range of their reference data insofar that the test site is within the range of environmental characteristics within the model. A test site assessed as disturbed for the multi-basin model will in fact be disturbed but disturbed sites are less frequently detected compared to single basin models. Therefore as with any bioassessment, users need to be aware of the chance of committing type 1 and 2 errors. Developing models that target a single stressor of concern to increase the pool of available candidate predictors is…

▼ Forest managers need information about the forest state for planning treatments. The information needs to be sufficient for the purpose and preferably obtained at low cost and with regular updates. In the last decade, development and use of airborne laser scanning (ALS) for forest variable estimation has been a revolution for forest management planning. But it has also created opportunities for other three dimensional (3D) technologies which can describe the forest canopy surface, since it provides an accurate model of the ground elevation. One such technique is stereo photogrammetry using aerial images. Using aerial images from national image surveying programs, high resolution 3D data and spectral data can be acquired regularly with a frequency of about 2-4 years over forest land in Sweden. The aim was to produce forest variable raster maps which can be used at stand level but also as information to describe within stand variation and updating stand boarders after clear-cut.
In this thesis aerial images from the National Land Survey’s image acquisition program has been used in all studies, but also high resolution and highly overlapping images have been evaluated. Using field plots, the 3D and spectral data can be linked by models to predict forest variables of interest. In this thesis; tree height, diameter, basal area, stem volume, species-specific stem volume and species proportions have been the variables of interest. Models have been applied and evaluated at Remningstorp in southern Sweden (Lat. 58°N, Long. 13°E), but also scaled up to national level using field plots from the national forest inventory. The included studies show that aerial images can produce forest variable estimates with good accuracy where best results in terms of root mean square error of the mean were 8.8% for tree height, 14.9% for basal area and 13.1% for stem volume, but that species-specific variables did not perform as well.
In conclusion, aerial images with 0.5 m resolution and 60% overlap using stereo photogrammetry produce estimates with an acceptable level of accuracy for use as a data source for forest management planning. However, very sparse forests, deciduous forests and mature forests have larger estimation errors. Nevertheless, from a forest management perspective, forest information can be collected at very low costs and with high spatial and temporal resolution.

▼ The role of mangroves as essential fish habitat has been a focus of extensive research. However, recent evidence has shown that this role should not be evaluated in isolation from surrounding habitats such as seagrass beds and hard-bottom communities. For example, submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) communities provide potential sources of food and shelter for fish species that may reside in the mangroves, but may also undergo ontogenetic migrations and daily home-range movements into neighboring habitats. The connectivity between the mangrove fish community and the surrounding seascape may be influenced by the level of patchiness, fragmentation, and spatial heterogeneity of adjacent SAV habitats (i.e., SAV seascape structure). The spatial patterns and heterogeneity of SAV seascape structures are driven by internal and external regulatory mechanisms operating at different spatial and temporal scales. In addition, it is likely that many fish species inhabiting the mangrove zones have different home ranges, and foraging and migratory patterns; therefore, different mangrove fish species may respond to seascape heterogeneity at different scales. There are few studies that have assessed the influence and connectivity of benthic habitats adjacent to mangroves for estuarine fish populations at multiple scales. The present research used an exploratory seascape approach in Biscayne Bay (Florida, USA) to evaluate patterns in the patch composition and configuration of SAV communities, and to examine relationships between seascape structural metrics and the abundance, diversity, and distribution of fishes that utilize the adjacent mangrove shoreline as nursery and/or adult habitat. This seascape approach consisted of: a) the multi-scale characterization of the SAV distribution across the seascape with metrics developed in Landscape Ecology, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing; b) multivariate analyses to identify groups with significantly distinct SAV seascape structures within the most heterogeneous scale, and identify possible mechanisms driving the observed SAV seascape structures; and c) an assessment of the mangrove fish community responses to SAV seascape structures.
By applying a set of multivariate analyses (e.g., ANOSIM, MDS plots, hierarchical clustering), the buffer within 200 m from shore was identified as the scale with the highest structural heterogeneity. At this scale, two major SAV seascape structures (i.e., areas with similar SAV spatial arrangement and composition) were identified: a fragmented SAV seascape (FSS) structure and a continuous SAV seascape (CSS) structure. Areas with CSS were characterized by large, uniform SAV patches. In contrast, areas with FSS were characterized by a higher density of smaller, more complex SAV patches. Furthermore, the areas with CSS and FSS structures clustered in zones of the bay with distinct salinity properties. The areas with CSS structures were mostly located in zones characterized by high and stable salinity. However, the areas with FSS concentrated in…

This thesis focuses on the definition and the validation of a crowd-simulation modeling method. This method allows transferring principles and measurements established in a source observation context to a target one. From the observation of pedestrian behavior in a social and urban context, our approach infers rules and motivations in order to model and simulate the individual pedestrian behavior in this source context. This allows, in a second step, to evaluate the transferability of the model to a given target context. Our work is based on a real case: the simulation of the passenger’s behavior while boarding and alighting trains (platform-train exchange) in a high-traffic station (dense situation). Starting from the state of the art of theories, models and types of simulation, we choose an approach based on the microscopic simulation of social agent’s motivation. This choice relies mainly on the fact that, compared to a classic crowd simulation, it has, a priori, a better transferability potential. The goal of this type of simulation is to study the architectural evolutions of the stations that could allow to control or shorten train dwell times.
