▼ Conventionally, the focus during supplier evaluation has been to assess cost, quality and delivery effectiveness due to their impact on profitability. In recent years, there has been increased emphasis on promoting more sustainable business practices that focus on reducing environmental impact and improve societal well-being, in addition to economic benefits. However, most of the existing supplier evaluation methods in literature as well as those used by leading companies fall short of comprehensively assessing suppliers from a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) perspective. TBL defined as holistically looking at the economic, environmental, and societal aspects of an entity. This paper presents a review and selection of metrics for economic, environmental and societal sustainability evaluation. In addition, this work proposes a methodology for combining the scores into a comprehensive score that can be used to compare two entities performance relative to the TBL.

DYNAMIC VITALS MONITORING FOR PATIENT PRIORITIZATION IN THE

▼ With the lack of standard protocols on how to assign
priorities in the Emergency Departments (ED), there are plenty of
opportunities for biases in the health system. Many hospitals in
the US have implemented the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) as the
method to sort their patients at the triage. However, there is a
lot of subjectivity from the nurses and even though the ESI has
been widely accepted, it is not the standard. Moreover, many
hospitals have no written protocol on patient reassessment during
their waiting time after they have been triaged. Therefore, there
is considerable uncertainty with regards to the changes of vital
signs and patient status during their waiting period. Nurses
typically use a First Come First Serve (FCFS) rule for patient
selection when several patients have the same priority (e.g. same
ESI) and are waiting in the ED after triage, disregarding the fact
that a patient status might improve or degrade while waiting. This
research focuses on the development of dynamic decision making
models for patient prioritization in the emergency department. It
involves the use of wireless technology to collect patients’ vital
signs in real time, and the integration of such information in
decision making models for patient selection in the ED. Integration
of wireless technologies and advanced sensing capabilities provides
a potential to establish a data-rich emergency room scheduling
system, which can be exploited to improve productivity and patient
care via dynamic decision making. The monitoring devices serve the
purpose of collecting data, which are used to test a decision model
that utilize multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) in order to aid
the nurse in making the decision on patient prioritization. The
rationale behind the research is that even though patients are
assigned a priority when seen at the triage, their condition might
improve or degrade while waiting at the ED. For this reason, it is
argued that the patient priority should be dynamic, which means it
should be changing as a function of the preferences of the nurse
doing the triage coupled with the patient’s vital signs, the
patient’s descriptive information (age, gender, etc.), and the time
of the patient in the ED waiting room. Multi-attribute utility
theory (MAUT) is employed to model patient prioritization due to
the inherent uncertainty in ED settings. MAUT is based on the
notion of the lottery, referred to as a von Neumann-Morgenstern
lottery. In fact, one of the challenges is on how to present the
nurses with the lottery questions without using excessive numerical
values or abstract representations. As part of the research, the
nurses’ individual preferences were extracted with a series of
questions that were developed to estimate their indifference points
between lottery and certainty. The von Neumann-Morgenstern
lotteries were transformed into simple questions, verbal
discussions, and case-based scenarios. Exponential functions were
created for each attribute and the overall utility was calculated
using the multiplicative form.…

▼ Over time, Emergency Departments (EDs) have changed in
terms of their provided services as newer treatment options and
medical technologies have become available. EDs are a safety net
within the health care system; they serve all patients regardless
their conditions, funds, or characteristics. The demand on EDs is
variable and ever increasing, often leaving them overcrowded. Many
hospitals are utilizing triage algorithm to rapidly sort and
classify patients based on the severity of their injury or illness.
Triage is a pre-hospital patient sorting process in EDs. Decision
making is a crucial aspect of the process due increasing concern
for ED productivity and the need to reduce waiting time for
patients requiring immediate medical intervention. To improve
decision making and the productivity in EDs, researchers have
implemented different tools and models from various fields.
Engineering tools and methods have been used extensively and
successfully in manufacturing systems. Similarities between
manufacturing systems and EDs are identifiable. Therefore, certain
tools and methods can be applied to ED practices to improve
productivity, safety, patient satisfaction, and critical decision
making. Group Technology (GT) is a management philosophy meant to
improve manufacturing efficiency by sorting and classifying parts
into part families. It builds on the concept that a group of
problems sharing common concepts, principles, and tasks can have a
single solution, thus saving time and effort. GT involves the
identification of part families. In manufacturing, a part family is
a group of parts which share similar design and/or manufacturing
characteristics. In healthcare systems, patients are the parts.
Thus, a patient group is a collection of patients sharing similar
demographic and physiological characteristics (patient-related) and
operational characteristics (system-related). This dissertation
provides a framework for the definition, identification, and impact
of patient grouping and prioritization on the ED static complexity
and system performance. The proposed methodology would be able to
identify patients groups and treatment priorities according to
patient characteristics using the newly developed GT triage
algorithm. Then, quantify the information-theoretic static
complexity of the ED system after using the GT. The output of this
process represents a scientific basis for making informed and
logical decisions to support improved ED patient sorting based on
patient and treatment requirements information. By applying the
methodology, patient groups and treatment priorities are identified
and the static complexity assessed for the ED system. Discrete
Event Simulation (DES) is utilized to compare the current ED system
which uses the ESI triage algorithm to two other systems; one ED
system using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process - Multi-Attribute
Utility Theory (FAHP-MAUT) triage algorithm (developed by the
author of the dissertation [1]), and another ED system using the GT
triage algorithm. Comparisons are made in terms of…

▼ This study examines inter-media agenda setting effects between Chinese and Western reporting on the single case of Zhou Yongkang’s imprisonment. Through a comprehensive content
analysis of 323 Chinese-language news articles from Chinese state-run media, mainland Chinese media, Hong Kong media, Taiwanese media, Western media, and immigrant Chinese media, this paper explores how
attribute agendas in different types of media’s news reports are mutually correlated. Results show Chinese state-run media’s agendas dramatically impact
attribute agendas in mainland China and Hong Kong media’s reports on Zhou Yongkang’s issue, while the inter-media agenda setting effects of Chinese state-run media does not reach Taiwanese media, Western media, and immigrant Chinese media. Also, this study content analyzes 652 Chinese-language Tweets on Zhou Yongkang’s issue. Findings suggest
attribute agendas of Chinese-language Tweets most significantly correlate with
attribute agendas in Western media’s reports on Zhou Yongkang’s imprisonment, although immigrant media is most frequently referenced by Chinese-language Tweets.

▼ Collaborative grid and cloud computing applications may be implemented by forming virtual clusters on demand. Formation of such clusters will require diverse resources with specific attributes to execute and support the specific application and its performance requirements. This thesis focuses on formation of such systems by looking up resources over a distributed peer-to-peer system. Discovery of appropriate resources from an enormous distributed pool of resources becomes tedious, but it should be resolved with minimum cost and latency. There can be a number of attributes characterizing each resource, and these attributes may have ranges of values depending upon the characteristics of the resources. Thus, when performing a look-up for appropriate resources with a peer-to-peer approach, the objective moves from a single-dimensional look-up problem to a
multi-dimensional look-up problem. The look-up operation has to be optimized in terms of delay in resolution, hop-count, communication cost, and overhead cost. This thesis develops and evaluates an architecture aimed at resolving this n-dimensional peer-to-peer look-up problem. The optimality of the proposed solution is evaluated in terms of communication overhead, delay, and hop count for look up. The complexity of n-dimensional look-up problem is further reduced in terms of dimensionality by utilizing the correlation between different
attribute characteristics. The proposed architecture uses a structured peer-to-peer network in the form of multiple rings, grouped together on the basis of individual attributes thus forming a Ring of Rings (ROR). Chord protocol is used to maintain the scalability and for having communication cost for lookup within logarithmic time complexity. Communication within the network is done using Bloom filters as a data structure, which represents the resources satisfying different
attribute values. The novelty of the architecture and the communication methodology lies in the fact that architecture facilitates any number of attributes having any range of values. Furthermore, use of Bloom-filters for communication reduces the overhead normally required to carry around long lists of resources to perform the final intersection that resolves the query. Using Bloom-filters greatly reduces the communication overhead and the cost of communication. The ROR architecture coupled with Bloom-filter messages reduces the message sizes considerably, but it introduces a certain amount of false positives. The findings indicate that with the optimum number of hash-functions and the optimum sized Bloom-filter, a ROR peer-to-peer architecture to search for
multi-
attribute queries can be much more efficient than the conventional systems used for the resolution of same type of queries. Queries associated with many systems request attributes which are correlated to each other. The research also addresses the identification of such resources more efficiently based on correlation of the attributes. The ROR architecture can be tuned for resolving these kinds of…

▼ The present thesis aim at developing a policy support framework facilitating the decision making process in the area of maritime transport. The proposed framework is based on a collaborative multi-criteria evaluation methodology, applied in a multi-actors environment and adjusted to the needs and particularities of the Greek maritime transport sector under the consideration of the key objectives and priorities of the European maritime transport policy.Maritime transport consists a very important sector of the Greek and European economies and a crucial link in the global, regional and local supply chains, ensuring the supply of energy, food and commodities. Policy making in the area of maritime transportation is developed and implemented under conditions of multiple objectives (due to the wide spectrum of the involved stakeholders) and constraints in an environment characterized by high complexity. The above creates the requirement of powerful and flexible decision support structures, able to cope with the challenge of the specific environment, the multiple and often non monetised objectives involved and the incorporation of multiple stakeholders in the decision making process, in need of facilitating consensus building.Combining the above requirements, the proposed maritime policy support framework is based on a combined multi-criteria methodology incorporating the operational synergy of two multi-criteria analysis methods (the Analytic Hierarchy Process and PROMETHEE method) and the use of two independent mechanisms (the expert group and the group of stakeholders) ensuring the reliability and the transparency of the policy formulation and evaluation process. The proposed methodology is applied to the Greek Coastal transport sector through a dedicated case study involving the evaluation of four policy proposals by a group of key stakeholders while the basic principles and functions of a collaborative information system facilitating the above research methodology, are also proposed. Finally, the key areas of originality are presented along with the main conclusions of the PhD thesis and a number of suggestions and recommendations for further research and continuation

▼ Problem There is a lack of knowledge about how Swedish SMEs make decisions on IT service selection. There is also lack of information about the attributes of IT service providers that are most important to Swedish SMEs. By discovering these attributes, IT service providers could focus on improving their services in those dimensions and become more attractive for Swedish small and medium enterprises. Purpose The purpose of this research is to investigate the decision making process over selection of IT services for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Sweden. Additionally, this research intends to discover the most important features (attributes) of an IT service provider in its selection. What are the steps involved in decision-making process? What decision-making methods can be used to help explain the process that goes on in the minds of the decision makers? What aspects influence their behaviour when decision makers prefer one service provider to another? IT service comprises of internet-based services such as web hosting, email services, online backup services and cloud apps or locally offered IT services such as IT helpdesk. The candidates who were interviewed were employees or entrepreneurs who work and live in Sweden. Method This research was conducted with an inductive approach using mono method for semi-structured interviews for primary data collection. Secondary data collection was multiple-source through literature reviews in order to learn about different attributes and current knowledge about this subject. The research method was qualitative with exploratory strategy in order to get insights into managers’ decision-making processes. Sampling was non-probability purposive method with sample size as saturation method. The focus was illustrative and method chosen as typical case. Conclusion The conclusions of this thesis illustrates that the important attributes (features) of IT services required by Swedish SMEs are the requirement that the service is being offered from Sweden, due to tax conformity laws and security matters. Moreover, SAT, WADD, FRQ and EBA are decision-making heuristics in use by the companies in selection of suitable IT services.

▼ Most traditional research on intertemporal choice assumes a deterministic, static, and alternative-wise perspective, leading to the widely adopted delay discounting paradigm. Recently, however, Dai and Busemeyer (2014) demonstrated that intertemporal choice is probabilistic, dynamic, and
attribute-wise in nature, and they developed an
attribute-wise diffusion model to account for these properties. This dissertation advances the previous research. Specifically, two new experiments with different types of intertemporal choice questions and an even more extensive comparison of competing static and dynamic models were conducted to further examine the relevant properties and look for a more comprehensive cognitive model of intertemporal choice. The results of the first experiment indicated that the probabilistic, dynamic, and
attribute-wise nature of intertemporal choice was supported under both conditions when the SS options occurred immediately or were delayed options. In addition, the results of the second experiment indicated that most participants showed transitive intertemporal preferences in terms of weak stochastic transitivity. The extensive model comparison led to an overall best model which was a generalization of the diffusion model with direct differences as advocated in Dai and Busemeyer. This model can account for all the effects and phenomena examined in this dissertation, including the delay duration effect, the common difference effect (and its reversal), the magnitude effect, and the potential intransitivity of intertemporal choice, as well as the marginal and conditional relationships between choice proportions and response times observed in individual data as a demonstration of the dynamic nature of intertemporal choice. Furthermore, this model can be conveniently extended to intertemporal choice between losses and account for the relevant gain-loss asymmetry. Consequently, it is recommended as a replacement for the existing models of intertemporal choice which assume a deterministic, static, and alternative-wise perspective on the topic.

▼ This dissertation consists of three essays that analyze the
decision-making and preferences of agricultural producers within the United States in relation to economic incentives, climate, weather and drought conditions. The first essay focuses on exploring Arizona beef producers’ willingness to join an alliance and preferences for vertical integration through alliances. The second essay aims to quantify the percent of cropland acreage in a county planted to cotton as a result of subsidized crop insurance. The last essay proposes to quantify the combined effect of insurance incentives, price change expectations, irrigation, climate, weather and drought conditions leading to the farmer’s
decision to abandon all or part of their planted acres.

▼ Group decision making is one of the most important and frequently encountered processes within companies and organizations, both in the public and private sectors (Turban 1988). The understanding, analysis and support of this process is difficult, due to the ill-structured, dynamic environment and the presence of multiple Decision Makers (DMs); each DM has his or her own perceptions and views on how the problem should be handled and which decision should be made (Jelassi et al. 1990). Thanks to the developments in multicriteria decision making methodologies and the increasing popularity of computerized MCDM methods, scientists and professionals have been provided with a set of tools whose usage can be advantageous in solving problems with multiple criteria. However, it is evident that the effectiveness of such procedures when used by multiple DMs remains to be proven. This necessitates the use of practical aggregation methods to extend the existing MCDM methodologies, as well as the computing methodologies, to support group decision problems (Iz and Krajewski 1992). The use of Group Decision Support Systems (GDSSs) is crucial when multiple persons are involved in the decision making process, since each DM has his or her own perceptions of the context and the decision problem at hand. In environments of this kind, the occurrence of conflicts among the members of the decision-making group is frequent. This conflict is referred to as interpersonal conflict (Bogetoft and Pruzan 1991). Factors that contribute to the occurrence of interpersonal conflicts include different values and objectives, different criteria and preference relations, lack of communication support among the members of the decision-making group etc. Noori (1995) recognizes that, from a practical point of view, conflicting objectives among the members of a group often exist due to interpersonal differences and goal incongruities. In coping with interpersonal conflicts, the aim is to achieve consensus among the DMs; in such problems, Multi-Criteria Decision Aid (MCDA) methods may be a useful tool. As argued by Bui and Jarke (1986), MCDM/MCDA methods provide an elegant framework for three important GDSS tasks: (a) representing multiple viewpoints of a problem, (b) aggregating the preferences of multiple DMs according to various group norms and (c) organizing the decision process. The framework offered by MCDM is simple but structured, while the simplicity of its outputs makes communicating, coordinating and aggregating individual analyses in the group decision making process easier. Jarke (1986) states that MCDM methods can serve as formal tools for preference surfacing and aggregation, as well as negotiation and mediation, in both cooperative and non-cooperative decision situations. Thus, the multiple criteria process of a GDSS is a key aspect of the system, as it provides a structured and integrated framework for the assessment of alternatives and criteria and for solution compromise.

▼ Since businesses are constantly changing, making right decisions is a critical factor in order to achieve good results. In the thesis, two different decision support models are tested and the outcome is compared. This is done in cooperation with a company, Åmotfors Energi, who is facing a decision on how they can make use of their 30 GWh heat which they today do not have a paying customer for. Nine alternatives are used in the models and evaluated with seventeen different criteria. The purpose of this study is to compare and interpret the outcomes of two decision support models: the Analytical Hierarchy Process and Pugh Matrix Analysis. The purpose is also to investigate the main factors that influence the outcome of the models. The main research strategy was to use experimental design where three experts with various technical skills have scored the alternatives in both models. The alternatives have been carefully developed through an idea generation and idea selection phase. The results show that the models give different result when it comes to ranking the alternatives, both between the models and between the different experts. The empirical findings establish that the outcome from the models should be interpreted that the lowest scored alternatives can be eliminated for further research. The alternatives with the highest score should be further investigated before a decision could be made. Furthermore, what mainly affects the result is based on human factors.

▼ This thesis studies the use of a collaborative spatial Multi-Criteria Analysis tool in site evaluation with multiple participants. The approach is situated within the context of three concepts of space, choice and participation, and is informed by fields as diverse as Decision-Making, Participatory Planning, Geographical Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, Voting, and Group Collaboration. A collaborative spatial Multi-Criteria Analysis software tool called MapChoice was designed for this thesis, built upon open source components and featuring easy-to-use decision support functionality in both single-user and collaborative modes. MapChoice was then evaluated in a real-world site selection situation with a case study on the location of much-needed affordable housing in the Town of Collingwood, Ontario. Based on previous discussions and workshops on the project, a workshop was held with a group of community housing advocates to compare a set of possible sites for an affordable housing project according to a set of spatial and aspatial criteria. The study indicates that a collaborative spatial MCA approach can be used in dealing with complex planning problems, and that it has the potential to contribute to improved consensus between participants.

Determining the allocation and the distribution of scarce resources is fundamental in economics. Thus, decision theory is the cornerstone of economic theory. In this thesis, we first provide a state of the art insisting on the fact that information, that is a central element of decision-making, is imperfect. Secondly, using fuzzy set theory, which aims to capture imprecision, we construct a fuzzy number, so-called C-Shape that captures the sensitivity of the decision-maker. Thirdly, we study decision theory through two key concepts of operation research: (1) game theory and (2) multi-criteria decision making. We provide an analogy between the gauge functions of convex sets and the membership functions arising in fuzzy set theory. Coupling a suitable notion of -convexity with the C-Shape function, we introduce a class of games for which the players can be optimistic, pessimistic or neutral. In addition the existence of Nash equilibrium is proved for such a class of games. Finally, concerning multi-criteria decision analysis, we use the C-Shape functions to characterize a new type of criteria called C-Shape pseudo-criterion, which makes possible to consider the alternatives as substitutable. This should be of interest to take into account, for example, the institutional context in which decision-making is taken.

▼ Across the globe, rivers are put into the service of meeting human needs and wants. Societal dependence on rivers and the consumptive benefits they provide has advanced at the unanticipated cost of degrading biodiversity and river ecosystem function. Socio-environmental tradeoff
analysis is key to balance disparate interests for sustainable river management.
Multi-criteria
decision analysis (MCDA) is a sub-discipline of
decision science methods that aid decisions to resource management problems with multiple conflicting criteria and management alternatives. Techniques for MCDA are useful for tradeoff
analysis but they are uncommonly used for river management, especially case studies based on incorporating the principles of river restoration into watershed management. I explore the qualitative and quantitative capabilities of MCDA with four stand-alone chapters that take a
decision science approach towards balancing socio-environmental interests for large scale river management. Together, these chapters make a contribution toward bridging the gap between empirical freshwater science and normative

▼ Transport infrastructure investment decision making is typically based on a range of inputs such as social, environmental and economic factors. The benefit cost ratio (BCR), a measure of economic efficiency (“value for money”) determined through cost benefit analysis (CBA), is dependent on accurate estimates of the various option costs and net social benefits such as reductions in travel time, accidents, and vehicle operating costs. However, most evaluations are deterministic procedures using point estimates for the inputs and producing point estimates for the outputs. Transport planners have primarily focused on the cost risks and treat risk through sensitivity testing. Probabilistic risk analysis techniques are available which could provide more information about the statistical confidence of the economic evaluation outputs.
This research project report investigated how risk and uncertainty are dealt with in the literature and guidelines. The treatment of uncertainty in the Nelson Arterial Traffic Study (ATS) was reviewed and an opportunity to apply risk analysis to develop probabilities of sea level rise impacting on the coastal road options was identified.
A simplified transport model and economic evaluation case study based on the ATS was developed in Excel to enable the application of @RISK Monte Carlo simulation software. The simplifications mean that the results are not comparable with the ATS.
Seven input variables and their likely distributions were defined for simulation based on the literature review. The simulation of seven variables, five worksheets, and 10,000 iterations takes about 30 seconds of computation time. The input variables in rank order of influence on the BCR were capital cost, car mode share, unit vehicle operating cost, basic employment forecast growth rate, and unit value of time cost. The deterministically derived BCR of 0.75 is associated with a 50% chance that the BCR will be less than 0.6, although this probability is partly based on some statistical parameters without an empirical basis. In practice, probability distribution fitting to appropriate datasets should be undertaken to better support probabilistic risk analysis conclusions. Probabilities for different confidence levels can be reported to suit the risk tolerance of the decision makers.
It was determined that the risk analysis approach is feasible and can produce useful outputs, given a clear understanding of the data inputs and their associated distributions.

▼ Proposed in this thesis is a methodology to enable yacht designers to develop innovative structural concepts, even when the loads experienced by the yacht are highly uncertain, and has been implemented in sufficient detail to confirm the feasibility of this new approach. The new approach is required because today's yachts are generally lighter, getting larger and going faster. The question arises as to how far the design envelope can be pushed with the highly uncertain loads experienced by the structure? What are the effects of this uncertainty and what trade-offs in the structural design will best meet the overall design objectives? The new approach provides yacht designers with a means of developing innovative structural solutions that accommodate high levels of uncertainty, but still focus on best meeting design objectives constrained by trade-offs in weight, safety and cost. The designer's preferences have a large, and not always intuitive, influence on the necessary design trade-offs. This in turn invites research into ways to formally integrate
decision algorithms into knowledge-based design systems.A lean and robust design system has been achieved by developing a set of tools which are blanketed by a fuzzy
decision algorithm. The underlying tool set includes costing, material optimisation and safety
analysis. Central to this is the innovative way in which the system allows non-discrete variables to be utilized along with new subjective measures of structural reliability based on load path algorithms and topological (shape) optimisation. The originality in this work is the development of a knowledge-based framework and methodology that uses a fuzzy
decision making tool to navigate through a design space and address trade-offs between high level objectives when faced with limited design detail and uncertainty. In so doing, this work introduces the use of topological optimisation and load path theory to the structural design of yachts as a means of overcoming the historical focus of knowledge-based systems and to ensure that innovative solutions can still evolve. A sensitivity
analysis is also presented which can quantify a design's robustness in a system that focuses on a global approach to the measurement of objectives such as cost, weight and safety. Results from the application of this system show new and innovative structural solutions evolving that take into account the designers preferences regarding cost, weight and safety while accommodating uncertain parameters such as the loading experienced by the hull.

▼ "Choosing the most appropriate project delivery method (PDM) available is acknowledged as a crucial issue in the construction industry. Both the choice and application of an unsuitable PDM can result in project failure. Likewise, the selection of a suitable PDM can increase the chance for project success. A method of selecting from among the seven PDMs recognized by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) was created in an attempt to address this issue. This research was comprised of three objectives. The first objective was to determine the influential factors needed to select the appropriate PDMs available to the US construction industry. The importance of each influential factor was also examined to determine whether or not significant differences exist between the following: both public and private sectors, project contractual parties, and various regions across the US. An empirical survey was conducted to gather this information throughout the US construction industry. The relative performance and suitability of PDMs for the different conditions involved in building constructions were evaluated as part of the second objective. Another empirical survey was conducted in the US construction industry to help with this evaluation. The performance and suitability of each PDM was examined with respect to 36 project criterion. The information was analyzed to create a decision support model for the PDM selection. This research used the early engagement of experts' opinions in the modeling of multi-attribute decision making (MADM). A decision support model was established by linking together the Conjunctive Satisficing Method and the TOPSIS decision making approach, and applying them to the PDM selection. The face validation method, with a subset of the surveyed professionals, was used to validate the model. The results gathered from this research provide both the project owners and the decision makers with a framework that can be used to evaluate a project's priorities and delivery options. A practical tool was also created that utilizes the expertise needed to make critical decisions without the physical existence of an expert panel. Applying the provided MADM model to the selection of a PDM allows the decision maker to choose the best alternative promoting a building construction project's success" – Abstract, page iv.

▼ In the beginning of internet development, the advertising revenue is the most important income of a website. After the burst of internet bubbles, some scholars mentioned that the information content is priced and user-charged. Nowadays, because of the broadband network, users spend less money and more time in connecting to internet. The owners of websites also find out more online business models for earning advertising fee, recharging fee, transacting fee and license fee from customers and providers. This research intends to discuss what difference in website attributes between chargeable websites and free website and what kinds of service and content are attractive to usersâ willing to pay.
Based on previous studies, this research concludes six website attributes: fit to purpose, ease of use, interaction, personalization, customization and trust. The 85 samples are the most popular websites in Taiwan and some experts scored their six website attributes, website awareness and competitive situation. After discriminant
analysis, the result indicates that personalization, interaction and trust are discriminative between different chargeable models. Besides, an online questionnaire survey is used to know usersâ experience and willing to pay. There are three kinds of principle component after factor
analysis: efficiency, design and personalization. The managers of websites can make their pricing strategy by measuring this attributes and factors.

▼ On secure networks, even sophisticated cyber hackers must perform multiple steps to implement attacks on sensitive data and critical servers hidden behind layers of firewalls. Therefore, there is a need to study these attacks at a higher
multi-stage level. Traditional taxonomy of cyber attacks focuses on analyzing the final stage and overall effects of an attack but, not the characteristics of an attack movement or `trajectory' on a network.
This work proposes to investigate trajectory similarities between
multi-stage attacks, allowing for the characterization of both a hacker's behavior and vulnerable attack paths within a network.
Currently, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) report alerts to a network analyst when a malicious activity is suspected to have occurred on a network. Previous work in this field has used IDS alerts as evidence of
multi-stage attacks, and has thus been able to group correlated alerts into cyber attack tracks.
The main contribution of this work is to use a revised Longest Common Subsequence(LCS) algorithm to analyze attack tracks as trajectories. This allows a systematic
analysis to determine which alert attributes within a track are of great value to the characterization of
multi-stage attacks.
The basic LCS algorithm, which looks for the longest common sequence in two strings of data, is extended to support the non-uniformity of alert data using a time windowing system.
In addition, a normalization method will be applied to ensure that the attack track similarity measure is not adversely affected by differences in attack track length. By applying the revised LCS algorithm, attack trajectories defined in terms of various IDS alert attributes are analyzed. The results provide strong indicators of how multidimensional cyber attack trajectories can be used to differentiate attack tracks.

▼ Millet is a small grain that is drought resistant, gluten free and has been found to elicit a lower glycemic response than other grains. However, millet is considerably under-utilized in the Western world. The purpose of this study was: (i) to investigate proso millet based products that are common to North American consumers (biscuits, extruded snacks, couscous and porridge), and (ii) to examine the effect of decortication on the health benefits of these products, glycemic index and sensory properties. A human glycemic index study was conducted to ascertain that a variety of millet based products were in fact low GI foods, as other studies have suggested. Once products were manufactured, refined proso millet resulted in higher protein, lipid, dietary fibre and polyphenol content in comparison to refined corn products. The expected glycemic index of the proso millet based products (50.2- 64.7) was much lower than those of the corn based products (78.5-86.3) (p<0.05). The refined proso millet couscous and porridge were found to have a low eGI. In the human glycemic study, incorporation of proso millet into food items did not result in a significantly different GI as compared to food items produced from refined corn (p=0.05). However, the importance of the interaction between product matrix, and how it can affect the GI was illustrated. Although the nutritional profiles were enhanced, the sensory characteristics of the millet products were not well liked by the consumers. As the amount of refined proso millet was increased, the liking scores decreased. There were many negative attributes (gritty, bitter, bitter aftertaste) associated with the refined proso millet products. However, the use of flavouring agents and other additions should lead to millet products that have acceptable sensory characteristics. Overall, decorticated proso millet needs to be investigated further to examine how it can be optimally used in the North American diet.

▼ Software effort estimation by analogy is a viable alternative method to other estimation techniques, and in many cases, researchers found it outperformed other estimation methods in terms of accuracy and practitioners' acceptance. However, the overall performance of analogy based estimation depends on two major factors: similarity measure and attribute selection & weighting. Current similarity measures such as nearest neighborhood techniques have been criticized that have some inadequacies related to attributes relevancy, noise and uncertainty in addition to the problem of using categorical attributes. This research focuses on improving the efficiency and flexibility of analogy-based estimation to overcome the abovementioned inadequacies. Particularly, this thesis proposes two new approaches to model and handle uncertainty in similarity measurement method and most importantly to reflect the structure of dataset on similarity measurement using Fuzzy modeling based Fuzzy C-means algorithm. The first proposed approach called Fuzzy Grey Relational Analysis method employs combined techniques of Fuzzy set theory and Grey Relational Analysis to improve local and global similarity measure and tolerate imprecision associated with using different data types (Continuous and Categorical). The second proposed approach presents the use of Fuzzy numbers and its concepts to develop a practical yet efficient approach to support analogy-based systems especially at early phase of software development. Specifically, we propose a new similarity measure and adaptation technique based on Fuzzy numbers. We also propose a new attribute subset selection algorithm and attribute weighting technique based on the hypothesis of analogy-based estimation that assumes projects that are similar in terms of attribute value are also similar in terms of effort values, using row-wise Kendall rank correlation between similarity matrix based project effort values and similarity matrix based project attribute values. A literature review of related software engineering studies revealed that the existing attribute selection techniques (such as brute-force, heuristic algorithms) are restricted to the choice of performance indicators such as (Mean of Magnitude Relative Error and Prediction Performance Indicator) and computationally far more intensive. The proposed algorithms provide sound statistical basis and justification for their procedures. The performance figures of the proposed approaches have been evaluated using real industrial datasets. Results and conclusions from a series of comparative studies with conventional estimation by analogy approach using the available datasets are presented. The studies were also carried out to statistically investigate the significant differences between predictions generated by our approaches and those generated by the most popular techniques such as: conventional analogy estimation, neural network and stepwise regression. The results and conclusions indicate that the two proposed approaches have potential to deliver…
