▼ Coupling the s-CO2 Brayton cycle to the advanced nuclear reactors generally requires an intermediate heat exchanger (IHX). From an economic viewpoint, it is important to reduce the size and cost of IHX, but at the same time, the thermal hydraulic performances should not be deteriorated. Printed-circuit heat exchanger (PCHE), one of advanced compact heat exchangers, has been demonstrated as a competitive candidate. This thesis mainly focuses on designing a PCHE-type advanced IHX with innovative surface geometry with thermal, economic and mechanical consideration.Among the four outstanding surface geometries, zigzag and S-shaped fin channels are selected for a helium-to-s-CO2 IHX. Since the thermal-hydraulic correlations of the zigzag channel with a variety of geometrical parameters are available, a thermal-economic optimization is carried out to optimize the design of zigzag channel. For such multi-objective optimization problem, the annual total cost and heat exchanger thermal effectiveness are selected as two objectives functions. NSGA-II (a fast and elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm), one of the widely used multi-objective genetic algorithms, is used for searching a group of Pareto-optimal designs. It is found that among the Pareto-optimal solutions, the total cost gradually increases with the thermal effectiveness between 88 and 95% while rises rapidly after the heat exchanger effectiveness exceeds around 95%. The sensitivity study shows that for the solutions with thermal effectiveness below around 95% the heat exchanger core physical length is the dominant factor that causes conflict between the total cost and thermal effectiveness. A similar trend can be observed from both the basic and extended design space. The final selection of the optimal designs obtained from the thermal-economic optimization requires a structural evaluation of surface geometry, especially for high-temperature high-pressure applications. S-shaped fin channels are chosen for preliminary structural assessment using numerical simulation due to the geometrical complexity and expected severe stress concentration. It is found that the excessive stress concentrations occur at tips of S-shaped fins when imposed with high-pressure differential loading. A small portion of the fin yields while the rest of the fin body remains low-stress level. The design and service limit prescribed in the ASME BPVC code is used to evaluate local stresses of the S-shaped fin, and according to the criterion, the reference model was allowed for 11.5 years of service with small portion of fin body yielded. ▼ Swarming, or aggregations of organisms in groups, can be found in nature in many organisms ranging from simple bacteria to mammals. Such behavior can result from several different mechanisms. For example, individuals may respond directly to local physical cues such as concentration of nutrients or distribution of some chemicals as seen in some bacteria and social insects, or they may respond directly to other individuals as seen in fish, birds, and herds of mammals. In this dissertation, we consider models for aggregating and social foraging swarms and perform rigorous stability analysis of emerging collective behavior. Moreover, we consider formation control of a general class of multi-agent systems in the framework of nonlinear output regulation problem with application on formation control of mobile robots. First, an individual-based continuous time model for swarm aggregation in an n-dimensional space is identified and its stability properties are analyzed. The motion of each individual is determined by two factors: (i) attraction to the other individuals on long distances and (ii) repulsion from the other individuals on short distances. It is shown that the individuals (autonomous agents or biological creatures) will form a cohesive swarm in a finite time. Moreover, explicit bounds on the swarm size and time of convergence are derived. Then, the results are generalized to a more general class of attraction/repulsion functions and extended to handle formation stabilization and uniform swarm density. After that, we consider social foraging swarms. We assume that the swarm is moving in an environment with an "attractant/repellent" profile (i.e., a profile of nutrients or toxic substances) which also affects the motion of each individual by an attraction to the more favorable or nutrient rich regions (or repulsion from the unfavorable or toxic regions) of the profile. The stability properties of the collective behavior of the swarm for different profiles are studied and conditions for collective convergence to more favorable regions are provided. Then, we use the ideas for modeling and analyzing the behavior of honey bee clusters and in-transit swarms, a phenomena seen during the reproduction of the bees. After that, we consider one-dimensional asynchronous swarms with time delays. We prove that, despite the asynchronism and time delays in the motion of the individuals, the swarm will converge to a comfortable position with comfortable intermember spacing. Finally, we consider formation control of a multi-agent system with general nonlinear dynamics. It is assumed that the formation is required to follow a virtual leader whose dynamics are generated by an autonomous neutrally stable system. We develop a decentralized control strategy based on the nonlinear output regulation (servomechanism) theory. We illustrate the procedure with application to formation control of mobile robots. ▼ Cancer is a disease affecting the global population. Especially, cancer becomes truly deadly and unstoppable when it metastasizes. Various cancer biomarkers are being developed and applied into clinical practices, but there are still many different obstacles and challenges in the field that need to be overcome. In this study, two different technologies are used to detect, characterize, and separate cancer cells and various types of cells and organisms. First one is circulating tumor cell (CTC) technology, which is composed of red blood cell lysis, negative depletion method, and integrated staining of immunocytochemical staining and RNA in situ hybridization. The second technology is single cell magnetophoresis (SCM), which measures and analyzes the magnetophoretic mobility induced by the external magnetic field created by the specially-designed magnet. First technology enables us to assess many different markers at once at protein and nucleic acid levels on a single cell basis, whereas the second technology enables us to utilize the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of the individual cell and use the characteristics in various applications. Applying the CTC technology developed and optimized in our lab, HPV 16 expressions are characterized in HPV-positive squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, and the effects of different PARP-inhibitor dosing levels are investigated in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. Understanding CTCs, the major key players in metastasis, and using those discoveries as a form of biomarker is important because it can help us understand more about metastasis and cancer and also provide guidance in decision-making and evaluation. Applying the SCM technology, intrinsic magnetic susceptibility of algae and cancer cells are quantitatively analyzed to understand iron and glucose metabolism in cancerous cells. Furthermore, based on the differences in iron regulation in stem-like cells and non-stem tumor cells, label-less separation is performed, showing huge potential of iron contents and iron regulation to serve as the biomarker specific for stem-like cancer cells. ▼ The objective of this study is to explore the interactions and interdependence among autonomous and purposeful agents within a complex policy system. From a policy perspective, the focus is on studying systematic patterns that emerge from the interactions among adaptive agents, how these patterns describe actual behavior, and implications of this approach for policy analysis and decision-making. The underlying conceptual question is framed within the context of fraud in the delivery of public services. This conceptualization leads to the following research questions. First, what macro patterns emerge from the interactions among heterogeneous agents in a public service delivery program? Second, what are some of the mechanisms that underlie emergent macro patterns? The conceptual framework is illustrated using data from The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children in Ohio. This dissertation consists of a set of three interconnected essays. The first essay builds upon the criticisms of the linear Newtonian-Cartesian models of the policy process and decisions and argues that recent advances discussed in the literature on complexity hold promise in providing realistic abstractions of policy issues. The second essay argues that the classical store choice model can be an effective tool for modeling the behavior of program participants as they travel to receive services. A product of such modeling is the spatial patterns that would emerge from the program participants following simple decision rules in selecting the service providers. Deviations from these patterns can be construed as being indicative of potentially fraudulent behavior and therefore deserving of greater scrutiny in efforts to reduce fraud. However, such models do not capture the interactions among the service providers, program participants and the rules that govern these interactions. The third essay describes an implementation of the general framework developed in the first essay and addresses some of the limitations of the models described in the second essay. The flexibility of the agent-based models is illustrated by discussing how such models can be used to simulate not only the deterministic models but can also be used to explore adaptive behaviors in an interdependent system of individuals, service providers, and public agencies. ▼ This research advances the state-of-the-art of analytical techniques to study the steady-state nonlinear dynamics of multi-degree-of-freedom, multistable structures subjected to harmonic excitations. A recently formulated analytical methodology, validated by numerical and experimental evidence, has been shown to accurately predict the steady-state dynamics of a discrete, multistable structure. Yet, the analysis is limited to lumped-parameter systems and cannot account for multiphysics phenomena, such as thermomechanical effects. Additionally, the analysis is challenged by an inefficient solution procedure, since the completeness of the dynamic predictions is highly dependent upon the generation of initial conditions. This research develops an enhanced solution procedure and normalization scheme to rectify these limitations, providing a robust and efficient analytical tool in the process. The analytical formulation is then extended to encompass distributed-parameter structures that exhibit global nonlinear coupling among all degrees-of-freedom in a form typical of reduced order models. In the process, assumptions inherent to traditional analyses, such as considering only single-degree-of-freedom systems or systems exhibiting weak nonlinear response, are overcome. Comparisons between the analytical and computational results indicate that the generalized analysis accurately characterizes the nonlinear dynamics of such multistable structures at speeds over two orders of magnitude faster than numerical simulation. Furthermore, the analysis is extended to encompass two-way coupling between thermal and mechanical domains, overcoming limitations of previous thermomechanical analyses. The thermomechanical analysis is capable of predicting the pre- and post-buckled nonlinear dynamics of a distributed-parameter beam model, the efficacy of which is verified with experimental evidence.In the process of developing these advancements to the analytical formulation, the analysis is leveraged to deliver significant, new insight into various aspects of nonlinear structural dynamics. The normalized analytical procedure enables the application of standard modal analysis techniques to structures that exhibit nonlinear deformation. A built-up structure of linearly coupled Duffing oscillators is studied, through which it is revealed that the characteristic displacement response of a single bistable Duffing oscillator is preserved in the higher degree-of-freedom composition by way of the fundamental equivalent nonlinear mode. The thermomechanical analysis is utilized in order to newly characterize the impedance of a distributed parameter structure exhibiting nonlinear dynamics. Furthermore, a measure of thermomechanical impedance that relates the temperature gradient to the velocity response of a structure is proposed and characterized. ▼ Test makers are generally not concerned with how suitable a test item is perceived to be by the testee (face validity). Unlike test takers however, decision makers (DMs) may choose to disregard a decision aid if they believe it is unsuitable for its stated purpose. I present a scale adapted from Nevo (1985) to measure decision aid face validity (DAFV). In three experiments, measures of DAFV obtained from one group of participants are shown to correlate with rates of decision aid reliance in another group of participants. Participants were asked to estimate the rent of an apartment. After making an initial estimate for the apartment, the participant was then presented with one of several possible DAs designed to estimate rent. The methodology of the aid was described along with the DA estimated rent. Participants were given the option to revise their initial rent estimate based on the new information provided by the DA if they desired. The FV of the aid (as measured during a previous pilot study) was correlated with the measure of DA reliance. I also present research that integrates DAFV with decision maker confidence. The previous methodology is repeated except the apartments are located in four cities. Participants have high confidence in their ability to estimate the rent in the local city, but less confidence in their ability to estimate rent in far away cities. As shown in previous research, a negative correlation was observed between confidence and decision aid reliance. In addition, a hypothesized interaction was observed between confidence and DAFV. When participant confidence was high (i.e., local city), DA reliance tended to be low. When confidence was low (i.e. foreign city), DA reliance was high if DAFV was high. When DAFV was low, DA reliance tended to be low even when confidence was low. Finally, how the performance of a DA is communicated was examined. The performance of a hypothetical decision aid was communicated in several different formats: 1) participants saw the mean accuracy of the DA, and the mean accuracy of the DM: “The decision aid was, on average, 70% accurate compared to 60% accuracy of unaided decision makers.” 2) participants were given mean DA accuracy only “The decision aid was, on average, 70% accurate.” 3) Participants were given the proportion of DMs beaten by the DA: “This decision aid performed better than 76% of human resource experts who did not use the aid.” Face validity was assessed for the aid using the various formats. Two experiments replicate the finding that “DA only” had consistently higher FV than “DA & DM” performance. This occurred even though the DA always performed better than the DMs. It seems participants were unimpressed by an aid that only outscored its expert decision maker by 10% or less, and punished the DA when this difference was made salient. ▼ Given the rapid changes our environment experiences, soil resource data on various spatial and temporal scales are critical to monitor and mitigate soil degradation. Realistic and useful soil data can be obtained through digital soil mapping. The prediction models are based on deterministic relationships between soil attributes and one or more landscape variables. This concept argues that the relationship between soil and its environment provides the information necessary to infer what soil might occur at a given point by assessing the environmental conditions there. It is known that environmental processes occur at natural scales, describing the hierarchical organization of the environment. Although the scale for observation should be related to the object or function under investigation, there is no clear method to determine the optimal scale. The appropriate scale is identified by the data and the process being studied. In hierarchical systems, there is often a range of scales over which a process remains stable as scale changes. These ranges are separated by transition points, a scale or range of scales where the importance of explanatory variables on the process changes. By changing the raster cell size of digital terrain models, various scales of data can be created to match the relative scale of the studied process. Statistical analyses such as correlation and model performance can then be used to explore the relationships between environmental variables, processes and scale. Five methods were used to determine the most appropriate spatial resolution for environmental variables: (a) significant differences in cumulative distribution functions, (b) using the RMS slope measure, (c) using the maximum RMS measure, (d) using the peak variable value, and (e) using the peak local variance.Analysis of the CFDs revealed that altitude and aspect do not change significantly with resolution, and a general decrease in slope and an increase in TWI as data resolution becomes coarse. It was also observed that terrain curvature tends to become more extreme as grid cell size increases. RMS analysis suggested that an optimum for catchment area, MRVBF, PRR, TWI, VRM and the curvature variables may occur in the 20-35 m range. This range was also indicated by the maximum RMS and local variance measures for MRVBF, NDVI, PRR, and VRM.Geostatistical models were found to be inferior in predicting soil depth than GAM and MLR models. Soil depth was strongly correlated with elevation and maintained this correlation as grid cell size increased. Altitude and PRR were the most frequently used variables in the best fitting models, along with GEOL, NDVI and Gaussian curvature. The most precise soil depth prediction model was found to be a GAM at 40 m resolution. Although a direct relationship between model accuracy, environmental variables and spatial resolution was not found, models which included predictors at a resolution which maximizes their local variance and RMS values tended to perform well. ▼ New emergent forms of online communication started to change teaching and learning processes. It brought about online learning that has gained more and more attention from educator, learners and researchers. However, although communication is considered an essential element of the learning process, little is known about how online learning environments shape students’ interactions. The current paper sheds light on the structure and properties of social networks formed in an online learning environment. Two instructional approaches were compared – one incorporating traditional lecturing and blogging, and the other including traditional lecturing, blogging, and a Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE) platform called Second Life (SL). 56 students in a large Mid-Wester university enrolled in an undergraduate-level psychology course participated in the study. In the control condition, the students received a lecture and were required to write a blog post every week. In the experimental condition, the students received a lecture, wrote a blog post each week and also participated in SL activities during class time. Students’ interactions on the blog in both conditions were coded and analyzed at two time points: at Post 1 and Post 12. Social network analysis was used to analyze the network density, centralization and to calculate individual node centrality indices. ANCOVA and Quade’s test (non-parametric ANCOVA alternative) were used to analyze network connectedness. The results revealed the following: (1) Students in the experimental condition made more connections with each other than in the control condition, potentially due to the more egalitarian nature of communication channels in SL and more opportunities for synchronous communication; (2) The network in the experimental condition was more distributed and less centralized. Peer network analysis showed that students in the experimental condition took more control over the information flow and dispersion. The instructor played a less significant role in experimental condition network. Second Life allowed for creating an autonomous, distributed learning environment that could form a more distributed interaction network; (3) The instructor’s influence in both class networks decreased over time; however, he remained a facilitator of the information flow in both conditions, although to a much lesser extent in the experimental condition as compared to the control condition. ▼ In a complex foreign policy system, involving myriad bureaucracies, advisors, and political entrepreneurs, who advises? What advice is heeded, and which advisor is followed? While most scholars tacitly acknowledge the importance of advisors in international relations, few attempt to answer the question of how advisors impact the decision making process, and the limits to successful advising. Importantly, the question of ‘who advises?’ is often crucial in explaining war and peace, since advisors often impact leader opinions and dictate the course of foreign policy. My dissertation blends insights from psychology and foreign policy to create a comprehensive framework describing foreign policy advising. In my framework, advisors compete against each other in a ‘marketplace of ideas.’ Successful advisors are those who draw from four bases of power (access, expertise, experience, and rhetoric) to posit salient appeals. However, these appeals are constrained by leader dispositions (such as militant assertiveness and political knowledge) and the strategic situation (the foreign policy problem a decision maker faces). I construct a set of hypotheses that combines bases of power, leader predispositions, strategic situation, and advisory technique to predict when advisors matter. I use experiments and comparative case studies to empirically explore these hypotheses. Experiments engage the psychological dimension of advising by exploring the impact of advice across personality types. Insights from the experiment are combined with the theoretical model, and applied to four cases of Presidential decision-making: the capture of the USS Pueblo, the capture of the USS Mayaguez, the decision to send troops to Lebanon, and the decision to not send troops to Rwanda. I trace the decision-making process using primary and secondary sources, and discover the influence wielded by Presidential advisors. Results suggest important paradoxes; for example, Presidents often ignore the advice of their expert military advisors. My dissertation is the first systematic study of advisory influence in Presidential decision-making, drawing from numerous fields of inquiry to construct a novel framework to examine foreign policy. ▼ Many decision problems are set in changing environments. For example, determining the optimal investment in cyber maintenance depends on whether there is evidence of an unusual vulnerability such as “Heartbleed” that is causing an especially high rate of incidents. This gives rise to the need for timely information to update decision models so that the optimal policies can be generated for each decision period. Social media provides a streaming source of relevant information, but that information needs to be efficiently transformed into numbers to enable the needed updates. This dissertation first explores the use of social media as an observation source for timely decision-making. To efficiently generate the observations for Bayesian updates, the dissertation proposes a novel computational method to fit an existing clustering model, called K-means Latent Dirichlet Allocation (KLDA). The method is illustrated using a cyber security problem related to changing maintenance policies during periods of elevated risk. Also, the dissertation studies four text corpora with 100 replications and show that KLDA is associated with significantly reduced computational times and more consistent model accuracy compared with collapsed Gibbs sampling.Because social media is becoming more popular, researchers have begun applying text analytics models and tools to extract information from these social media platforms. Many of the text analytics models are based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). But these models are often poor estimators of topic proportions for emerging topics. Therefore, the second part of dissertation proposes a visual summarizing technique based on topic models, a point system, and Twitter feeds to support passive summarizing and sensemaking. The associated “importance score” point system is intended to mitigate the weakness of topic models. The proposed method is called TWitter Importance Score Topic (TWIST) summarizing method. TWIST employs the topic proportion outputs of tweets and assigns importance points to present trending topics. TWIST generates a chart showing the important and trending topics that are discussed over a given time period. The dissertation illustrates the methodology using two cyber-security field case study examples.Finally, the dissertation proposes a general framework to teach the engineers and practitioners how to work with text data. As an extension of Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) in quality improvement problems, Exploratory Text Data Analysis (ETDA) implements text as the input data and the goal is to extract useful information from the text inputs for exploration of potential problems and causal effects. This part of the dissertation presents a practical framework for ETDA in the quality improvement projects with four major steps of ETDA: pre-processing text data, text data processing and display, salient feature identification, and salient feature interpretation. ▼ Research on jury decision making is interesting because there is an expectation by the justice system that if jurors take their duty seriously and put effortful cognition into their task, they should be uninfluenced by irrelevant information and reach a fair decision. However, research has shown that although jurors think thoroughly and try to reach a fair decision, they are susceptible to a variety of irrelevant factors. There have been multiple models of jury decision making that have been proposed to account for how jurors reach their decisions, but none seem to be able to fully explain the wide range of irrelevant factors that influence jurors. However, this dissertation argues that cognitive-experiential self-theory (CEST) is a model of human decision making that also should be applied to juries. This dissertation sets out to give support to CEST as a model of jury decision making. CEST is a decision making theory that posits that humans have two systems of information processing. The first system is a rational system that engages in effortful cognition. The second system is the experiential system that is more based on emotion. This dissertation will support CEST as a model of jury decision making by showing the types of information that are considered based on how jurors process information, how these considerations will influence decisions, which jurors have the ability to update decisions based on new information, and that this model can make accurate predictions regarding these three areas at the state and trait-level. A pretest and study 2 both support CEST’s assertion that people can be engaged two different types of processing at the same time. That is, information processing is not simply a tradeoff between effortful cognition and quick, heuristic based cognition. Because of this, people who are engaged in rational thought can still be influenced by irrelevant factors via the experiential system. Both studies show that jurors will consider different types of information when making their decisions based on the levels of rational and experiential processing they are engaged in. Both studies then attempt to show that based on which factors jurors consider, their decisions may be influenced by irrelevant factors. Study 1 supports this prediction showing that a narrative case presentation is much more persuasive to jurors engaged in high experiential processing than a case presentation that only uses facts and arguments. Additionally, both studies considered together show that jurors engaged in high rational processing are more able to update their decisions after hearing new evidence. In contrast, jurors engaged in high experiential processing have more difficulty updating their decisions after hearing new evidence. The studies presented in this dissertation provide reasonable support for CEST as a model of jury decision making, particularly in comparison to other, more popular models of jury decision making. ▼ Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in people over age 65 in industrialized nations. The exudative AMD accounts for only 10% to 20% of AMD cases, but causes 80 to 90% of cases with severe vision loss related to AMD. The current intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) therapies using Avastin or Lucentis has several unmet clinical needs, such as to minimize the frequency of injection, to decrease the systemic side effects, and to evaluate the effect of therapies. We propose to develop a drug delivery system that could perform sustained release of anti-VEGF drug by multifunctional drug-loaded microparticles (MPs). A modified double emulsion technique has firstly been used to fabricate biodegradable poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) MPs. The MPs could provide fluorescence, ultrasound, and OCT contrast simultaneously. Meanwhile, linear correlations has been observed between fluorescence intensity and MPs concentration, same as ultrasound intensity and MPs concentration. One of the anti-VEGF drugs (Avastin) has been conjugated to MPs to increase binding efficiency for target delivery. However, the modified double emulsion process is not suitable for encapsulating fragile protein drugs, such as Lucentis. The electrospray process has been introduced to overcome the limitations of the double emulsion process. Both monolayer MPs and double-layer MPs with core-shell structure are fabricated by single-axial and co-axial electrospray, respectively. To optimize the fabrication process, the effects of the applied voltage and the flow rate on the resulting and co-axial jet and the MPs size has been investigated. The results indicate that both the average size of MPs and the diameter of the co-axial jet increased as the flow rate increasing and decreased as the applied voltage increasing. A theoretical model using instability analysis has been developed to understand the process physics and predict the process outcome. Meanwhile, the biodegradation time of PLGA MPs as well as the bioavailability of Lucentis under single-axial electrospray is tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Elisa). After the MPs fabrication and characterization, the inflammation experiment on intravitreal injection of MPs has been investigated by immunocytochemical analysis on in vivo chick model. CD45, Islet1, and Draq5 are used to label microglia, horizontal cells, and the nuclear DNA, respectively. TUNEL and CC3 are selected as cell death model to further investigate the cell apoptosis after injection. The results show that MP injection at a dose of 20¿¿g and below does not cause inflammation under our experimental condition. However, significant microglia reactive as well as cell death (labeled by TUNEL) provided the evidence that MPs at a dose of 200¿¿g and above induces significant retinal inflammation and cell death. The modern multiple-core computer architectures that include general-purpose multi-core architectures (from Intel, AMD, IBM, and Sun), and specialized parallel architectures such as the Cell Broadband Engine and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) have very high computation power per chip. A significant challenge to be addressed in these systems is the effective load-balanced utilization of the processor cores. Memory subsystem has always been a performance bottleneck in computer systems and it is more so, with the emergence of processor subsystem with multiple on-chip processor cores. Effectively managing the on-chip and off-chip memories and enhancing data reuse to maximize memory performance is another significant challenge in modern multiple-core architectures. Our work addresses these challenges in multi-core and many-core systems, through various compile-time and run-time optimization techniques. We provide effective automatic compiler support for managing on-chip and off-chip memory accesses, with the compiler making effective decisions on what elements to move in and move out of on-chip memory, when and how to move them, and how to efficiently access the elements brought into on-chip memory. We develop an effective tiling approach for mapping computation in regular programs on to many-core systems like GPUs. We develop an automatic approach for compiler-assisted dynamic scheduling of computation to enhance load balancing for parallel tiled execution on multi-core systems. There are various issues that are specific to the target architecture which need attention to maximize application performance on the architecture. First, the levels of parallelism available and the appropriate granularity of parallelism needed for the target architecture have to be considered while mapping the computation. Second, the memory access model may be inherent to the architecture and optimizations have to be developed for the specific memory access model. We develop compile-time transformation approaches to address performance factors related to parallelism and data locality that are GPU architecture-specific, and develop an end-to-end compiler framework for GPUs. ▼ Due to the increased attention in electronic power conversion for high-power applications, the development of new converter topologies with new semiconductor technology has been increased. In fact, multi-level converters have been under research and development for more than three decades and have successfully made their way into many industries. They are commercialized in standard or customized products within a wide range of applications including energy and power systems such as High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems, industry such as conveyors and compressors, transportation such as ship propulsion and high-speed train traction, and renewable energy such as wind energy conversion. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are one of the promising topologies in recent years for medium or high voltage applications. They are considered as the next generation AC/DC, DC/AC converters for medium/high voltage (MV/HV) motor drive applications due to their transform-less structures, high efficiency, and modularity. In addition, MMCs provide better quality of output voltages and eliminate additional capacitors on the dc link, as the storage is distributed among the capacitors in the submodules of the converters.Reliability is one of the most important challenges in MMCs, since a large number of power switching devices are used and each of these devices can be considered as a potential failure point. These switching devices are the most vulnerable components in power converters. Therefore, it is significant to detect and locate the fault correctly in a short time after the fault occurrence. Failures of switching devices can be classified into short-circuit faults and open-circuit faults. Since the short-circuit fault is normally protected in device level, only single-submodule open-circuit faults are considered and investigated in this paper.This paper studies and investigates the behaviors of both failure and healthy submodules, and uses artificial neural network (ANN) classification algorithms for single-submodule open-circuit fault diagnosis. In addition, the fault tolerance and reconfiguration control of the MMC is also investigated. Individual submodule capacitor voltages of the MMC are used as diagnostic signals to detect faults and their locations (which device of which submodule). An ANN classification is applied to the fault diagnosis of the MMC drive system. Multilayer structure networks are applied to identify the fault type and location based on the characteristics of the capacitor voltage waveforms. Simulation and experimental results of the proposed fault diagnosis for a single-module open-circuit fault are presented in this paper. The ANN algorithm is implemented in field programmable gate array (FPGA) and the ANN parameters and weights training is completed offline in Matlab by using the experimental data.
