▼ This examination of Nobody, a punning image in words and pictures of an imaginary person without a torso, was initiated by how often he appeared in different guises in the English satirical prints of the eighteenth century. For many years Nobody was seen as a trickster who showed that his head was directly attached to his legs. Whether his face was disguised as that of a well-known personage or whether he or she was dressed fashionably, Nobody dominated the scene as an amusing visual and verbal topic for conversation or speculation. In the process of assembling the pictures of Nobody from various collections, it became apparent that, aside from Gerta Calmann's fine analysis from an art historical standpoint, there was no comprehensive study of Nobody in his parallel role as an elusive entity in English literature. Moreover, Calmann's study of Nobody as a folk image on the Continent offered no substantial argument to support his longevity in England. Because the eighteenth-century playgoer, reader, or print-buyer was exposed to shows in which oddly proportioned characters performed, their attention was caught and held by the fact that Nobody could pop up anywhere; that is, he could be depended upon to be undependable. Calmann's essay began with Nobody's origins in Greek legend as the identity assumed by Odysseus in order to avoid being eaten by the one-eyed giant, Polyphemus. Subsequently, she explored his appearances in the Bible as "Nemo" and his later adaptations into medieval European folklore under the name of "Niemand." Although her study also revealed much about Nobody's iconographic career in England, it did not connect her findings about him in relation to the written language, nor did she note his presence in children's literature, in music or the dance; wherever, in short, there was an opportunity for his exhibition. Readily received into the mainstream of English culture, Nobody's debut was traceable from the Renaissance stage, including his mention by Shakespeare. As Nobody passed blithely into the next century, he was recognized by such luminaries as Samuel Johnson and Horace Walpole, in addition to being singled out as a creature of either sex by two women playwrights of the 1790s, Mary Robinson and Hannah Cowley. Judging from the boastful retort by one of Cowley's foppishly dressed characters: "I have been in a thousand different shapes, and a thousand places since then," I concluded that the attraction of Nobody's intangibility was similar to that of a sprite or a leprechaun to audiences. From this protean aspect of Nobody's being that was his essential trademark, I looked for indications as to how far he could go by reinventing himself over such a long period. In this respect, I found that Nobody's versatility was directly tied to the coded behavior of the day, where he appeared in such customary pursuits as play-acting and card-playing. South Africa is a multiracial and multicultural society, and the diversity of languages reflect a complex and differentiated nation. This investigative study attempts to show how South Africans from different cultural and linguistic groups experience the humour in the Madam & Eve comic strips and whether, to some extent, they share a common sense of humour. The study starts with an investigation into the relationship between culture and language through the Sapir and Whorf hypothesis. Furthermore the study discusses the relationship between culture, language and humour to show that humour is in many instances culture specific. In culture-specific humour, the humour tends to be at the cost of people from a different cultural group; thus “we” can laugh at “them”. The study also defines humour and investigates the working of humour through the superiority theory, the relief theory and the incongruence theory. The discussion shows that participants in humour need to share the right context and knowledge before they can enjoy the humour. The study looks at comic strips as a genre and how humour operates in comic strips. The investigation also discusses the background on and the characters in the Madam & Eve comic strips. The discussion shows the humour in the Madam & Eve comic strips depicts social issues, racial relationships, especially the relationship between the white Madam, her elderly mother and the black Eve, crime in South Africa and politics. An empirical survey serves as the vehicle to investigate how respondents from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds experience the humour in Madam & Eve. The different examples were chosen to see if respondents experienced certain types of humour depicted in the comic strips in a negative way. The study includes analysis of the different racial and linguistic groups’ experience of the humour depicted in the comic strips included in the questionnaire to show differences in different groups’ experiences. Although some of the respondents took a more neutral stance to some of the ethnic humour depicted in Madam & Eve, generally speaking the respondents experienced the humour depicted in the comic strips in a positive way.

During the early nineteenth century, Neoclassical artists depicted scenes of antiquity, both real and imagined, by exemplifying their nobility and idealism. The first artist to break the walls around this infallible representation was the caricaturist Honoré Daumier (1808-79). Daumier explored the myths and legends of antiquity minus the trappings of a classical education. The result was Histoire ancienne, a series of fifty prints published in Le Charivari between December 1841 and January 1843 that ridiculed the same subjects that artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) and Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) exalted. In 1857, critic Charles Baudelaire said of Histoire ancienne, “Daumier came down very brutally on antiquity—false antiquity, that is, for no one has a better feeling than he for the grandeurs of antiquity… It was a very amusing bit of blasphemy, and one that had its usefulness.”1 No one before Daumier had dared represent the deities and heroes of antiquity in such a satirical manner. Bringing an historical subject into the modern age was pivotal to the transition from classicism to modernity in art. In spite of its being one of the most well-known and admired of Daumier’s series, Histoire ancienne has not received the attention that its significance merits. This thesis provides a thorough critical analysis and contextualized reading of this series and the aspects that made it so crucial to nineteenth-century modernity. It analyzes the presence of established works of literature in Daumier’s imagery and his treatment of classical texts; addresses Daumier’s rather perverse portrayals of heroism and wisdom and sardonic treatment of classical love and romance; discusses the individual prints in this series in the context of the works of Daumier’s contemporaries; and explores the importance of the series’s captions and how they contribute to its “blasphemy.” While Histoire ancienne is currently viewed as an important facet of classical French caricature, here its importance in the development of modernity is analyzed through its unorthodox portrayal of a class of subjects that had until this point remained static, a key component of representation in the art of the modern age.

Plusieurs études de la « couverture » médiatique accordée à la vie personnelle, publique et privée, de Théodore Roosevelt montrent qu’il attira plus d’attention journalistique que nombre de ses successeurs. L’on ne saurait sous-estimer la contribution capitale des caricaturistes, même les plus sévères, à l’inaltérable popularité de Roosevelt pendant quelque trente ans. Il y a lieu de penser que nul autre président ne fut pour eux une source d’inspiration aussi constante et aussi réjouissante. Le but de la présente thèse est de replacer l’émergence de l’image caricaturée de Roosevelt dans le contexte d’une prise de conscience globale du pouvoir de la caricature sur l’opinion publique. L’humour devenant un formidable outil d’opposition ou de propagande lorsqu’il est associé à la politique, il convient d’explorer les caractéristiques de l’humour politique à l’époque de Roosevelt, et notamment en quoi il se distingue d’autres formes de critique du pouvoir en place. Est proposé dans un premier temps une rétrospective historique de la caricature politique en Europe et son émergence aux États-Unis, suivie de l’analyse en détail du « moment décisif », avec le très célèbre Thomas Nast, de l’histoire de la caricature américaine. Vient ensuite une évaluation de l’impact des caricatures sur la carrière politique de Théodore Roosevelt au moyen de plusieurs études de cas, identifiés comme les moments clés, dont la finalité est de vérifier s’il existait une véritable corrélation entre les actions du président et son image médiatique : cow-boy légendaire, homme politique au destin national, héros militaire, chef de l’exécutif controversé.

Several studies of the media coverage of Theodore Roosevelt’s personal, public and private life reveal that he attracted more media attention than many of his successors. The importance of the contribution of even the most caustic cartoonists to his enduring popularity for thirty years should not be underestimated. There are reasons to believe that no other president offered a more constant and delightful source of inspiration. The objective of this dissertation is to contextualize several cartooned images of Roosevelt within the growing awareness of the power of cartoons on public opinion. When combined with politics, humor becomes a tremendous tool for the spreading of official propaganda or of the opposition’s creed. We will therefore assess the characteristics of political humor during Roosevelt’s age and how it is distinct from other types of criticism of the establishment. We will first present a brief history of political cartoons in Europe and their rise in the United States, followed by a detailed assessment of the legacy of the famous cartoonist Thomas Nast, which represents a « defining moment » in the history of American political cartoons. This will be followed by an evaluation of their impact on Theodore Roosevelt’s political career by means of several case studies of decisive moments. This present piece of work has as a objective to analyse the linguistic discursive construction found in the cartoons by Angeli. The corpus is composed by four cartoons published by Folha de São Paulo newspaper relating the period from January 2016 to September 2016, regarding Dilma Rousseff´s impeachment. We believe that cartoons provide rewarding experiences with issues related to language and humour as a social phenomenon which expresses an opinion leader character. The theoretical principles are based on humour concepts presented and discussed in the studies of Bergson (1993), Propp (1992), Travaglia(1990), as well as in the Discourse Analyses in media context from Charaudeau`s perspective (2005, 2006, 2009, 2014, 2015). Firstly, we proceed to present the corpus and historical aspects which involve the selected cartoons. We resumed the history, trying to understand how humour was explained by scholars and theoreticians chosen for this study. We managed to identify the linguistic elements of humour in cartoons and the effects of understanding of such cartoons. Finally, after corpus analyses, we realized that humour not only criticizes, but also derides those who distance from social standards

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a construção linguístico-discursiva do humor nas charges de Angeli. O corpus é composto por quatro charges, publicadas no jornal Folha de S. Paulo, referente ao período de janeiro de 2016 a setembro de 2016, a respeito do impeachment de Dilma Rousseff. Acreditamos que os textos humorísticos possibilitam gratificantes experiências com as questões da língua e do humor como um fenômeno social que exprime um caráter formador de opinião. A fundamentação teórica baseia-se em conceitos de humor apresentados e discutidos nos estudos de Bergson (1993), Propp (1992), Travaglia (1990), bem como na Análise do Discurso em contexto midiático sob a perspectiva de Charaudeau (2005, 2006, 2009, 2014, 2015). Primeiramente, procedemos à apresentação do corpus e dos aspectos históricos que abarcam as charges selecionadas. Realizamos uma retomada histórica, procurando conhecer como o humor foi explicado pelos pensadores e teóricos, escolhidos para esta pesquisa. Analisamos os mecanismos linguístico-discursivos do humor nas charges e os efeitos de sentido. Finalmente, após a análise do corpus, percebemos que o humor pode não só criticar, como também pode ridicularizar aqueles que se distanciam das normas sociais

▼ Evolution of life as a scientific theory was introduced officially into the South African life sciences grade twelve curriculum in 2008. This presented an opportunity to investigate how teachers could incorporate teaching strategies, involving the use of narratives and concept cartoons, into their pedagogical content knowledge to encourage the use of higher-order thinking skills and deep learning about evolution, a new topic in the curriculum. Little research has been done on how narratives and concept cartoons contribute to the development of higher-order thinking skills in teachers and their ability to use these teaching strategies to effect a better conceptualization of evolution. A mixed methods research design was adopted to establish generalizations about the teachers’ higher-order thinking skills as well as to explore their individual worldviews about evolution as a scientific theory and their perceptions about the controversy between science and religion. The quantitative and main part of the study involved a (quasi)experimental format based on interventions focusing on workshop presentations using either narratives or concept cartoons. A pre-test and post-test format was used to measure the effect of the treatments. A rubric, based on the Piagetian levels of concept development, was designed to transform qualitative responses into quantitative data. The responses to five open-ended questions of a questionnaire were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test. The smaller and supportive phase of the study involved categorizing and then analyzing qualitative data, derived from different artifacts and responses to the questionnaire, in order to establish how the teachers’ worldviews influenced their perceptions of the evolution of life, the nature of science and religion. An embedded concurrent mixed methods design allowed for the simultaneous generation and collection of quantitative and qualitative data. The findings were integrated and mixed to give a clearer and more global picture not only of the teachers’ ability to use higher-order thinking skills but also to reflect their conceptual ecologies of evolution.

▼ The cartoon is increasingly becoming an educational tool. It is used extensively at School Certificate and University Entrance level in New Zealand secondary schools to not only communicate ideas, but also to analyse how those ideas are translated to the reader. For this study I have concentrated on the use of the editorial cartoon for the fifth form English syllabus and, in particular, the interpretation of the static image in the School Certificate examination. My research design is based on a similar study by Dr LeRoy Carl which he completed at Syracuse University's School of Journalism, and entitled Meanings Evoked in Population Groups by Editorial Cartoons. 1) CARL, LeRoy M. (1968) Editorial Cartoons Fail to Reach Many Readers, Journalism Quarterly 45, pp 533-535 Dr Carl's research concluded that very few readers of the cartoon actually understood the intended message. His study best sums up the problem of people misinterpreting the cartoon and its importance to this area of educational research. Dr Carl's 600 page thesis concludes that many forces are at work within individuals' scrambling of the messages, which may not always be clearly sent by the cartoonists in the first place. The assumption has been made by many that editorial cartoons are easy to understand - easier than the written word. Some of the cartoonists quoted in Carl's study have indicated complete unawareness of the communication barriers between them and their public. The interpretation of the cartoons used in the School Certificate examination and the resulting mark allocation are based on the Chief Examiner's decoding, (he also sets the questions). He and his panel do not contact the cartoonist for his or her intended meaning. Therefore the basis for assessment may be found on false grounds. Considering Dr Carl's study, it seems that misinterpretation of the cartoonist's intentions is a high possibility. It would appear to me to be more appropriate to use the cartoonists' intended message as a basis for assessing the School Certificate paper, rather than the interpretation of non-related people. With this in mind, I have selected four editorial cartoons-each with a different style and context. Four fifth form classes at James Hargest High School in Invercargill were also selected as my sample group, which comprised of two high band groups and two low band groups (based on academic achievement). One high band and one low band group were given a general lesson in cartoon cognition including ways of dissecting the cartoon in order to decode it. I used the bombing of the "Rainbow Warrior" in Auckland Harbour as a focus and then visually demonstrated how a number of New Zealand cartoonists interpreted that 1985 event. A questionnaire was then completed by all four classes on each of the four cartoons and the answers were compared with those supplied by the cartoonists themselves. This dissertation examines the social, political and technological that enabled the creation of a private space for the work of cartoonists in print journalism in the state of Sergipe. More specifically, it is to investigate the social conditions that led agents with distinct origins and socialization to produce cartoons for print media Sergipe, which features are likely to be used to occupy a place in space chargismo this state and which importance of a trajectory marked by previous actions in newspapers to obtain such resources. To account for understanding the factors guide for the entry chargismo journalism, it was necessary to analyze the insertion of cartoonists in various spheres and how they enable the acquisition of resources that can be usable for entry into the world of the press in position cartoonist. The empirical universe that formed the basis for research and analysis performed here corresponds to a set of producers of cartoons that work or have worked in the press of the state of Sergipe. We considered both cartoonists who currently produce cartoons for newspapers but also very cartoonists referenced among journalists, but they are not active anymore. With respect to subdivisions, this dissertation is structured in three stages. First, we analyze the socio-historical conditions that led to the constitution of chargismo newspaper in Brazil. At this point, the focus is on career paths of cartoonists and the constant restructuring of newspaper companies to identify the resources linked to the insertion of the press cartoonists. Secondly, we stop on the analysis of social determinants hallmarks of occupying a place in space chargismo newspaper. In this step, we treat the forms of recruitment of cartoonists, or rather, we examine the game realized by cartoonists from the proceeds of inserts intra and extra-journalistic and recognition for the work as producer of cartoons for newspapers. Finally, at the last moment of our research is an analysis of the skills of newspaper cartoonists, as these skills are developed and the importance of experience within the world of journalism to develop such skills. This work showed that the activity of the newspaper cartoonist is a form of action in which the journalistic skills are blended with artistic design skills and that the criteria for entry into the "profession" are based on the conversion of resources from the inserts itself journalistic universe and experience with the production of artistic designs.

With this research, we intend to demystify the Castelo Branco government (1964-1967) and its relationship with the mainstream media by analyzing the editorials and cartoons in the newspapers O Estado de S. Paulo (OESP) and O Globo (OG) – as well as to try to deconstruct the Memory that these newspapers seek to build today about the Castelo government and their participation in it and in the coup. The analysis of journalistic discourses - following Michel Foucault in which discourse is a culturally constructed representation of reality, inserted in a power dispute system - of this period will allow us to question our sources about the supposed social consensus of these press organs during this time frame. This research will therefore study this period as a whole, questioning its legal basis, and other themes such as torture, corruption, political organization, and etc., by using the discourses and representations of these newspapers as an instrument for the dissection of these themes, as well as the source itself. We will do this by asking questions such as how they dealt with their liberal rhetoric in an authoritarian government; what were the trajectories undertaken by both newspapers in their support and criticism; what are the changes in positions and their motives; and how, being the media an important factor in deciding the political-economic agenda and forming opinions, they sought to influence the actions of government or part of civil society. So these newspaper, two of the most important and influential of the time, though extremely different in many aspects, will be the basis for not only understanding them as a source, but also as participants in the events and as social actors, allowing us to understand the period itself in further study
