▼ Two bodies of literature have addressed the question
of how attentional focus relates to learning and
performance of a
motor task. The literature on direction of attention has found that
focusing on the effects of one’s movement, an external focus,
rather than on one’s bodily movements, an internal focus, leads to
more effective and efficient movements and subsequently better
performance on a variety of sport-related
motor skills. The
literature on the relevance of attention has determined that
novices perform well when focused on aspects of the skill execution
itself, but experience
performance decrements when asked to focus
on something extraneous. Experts show the opposite tendency in that
they perform more poorly when focused on the skill execution than
on a distractor. Both of these areas of research are
well-established in their own right, but they are not purely
independent because these different styles of focus overlap. A
novice golfer who focuses on the swing of his arms while putting is
predicted to do more poorly due to an internal focus, but the other
body of literature predicts success due to a skill-relevant focus.
Few have attempted to research the effects of both dimensions of
focus simultaneously. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to
identify whether the interaction of external and skill-focused
attention could be more beneficial to skill acquisition and
retention than either one separately. Participants learned to throw
darts while receiving one type of attentional focus instruction:
(1) internal, skill-relevant; (2) external, skill-relevant; (3)
internal, extraneous; (4) external, extraneous. They returned 48
hours later to perform retention trials without any attentional
instructions. Workload was assessed via a self-report survey for
participants in each condition to assess whether any differences in
subjective difficulty exist between the groups. Although all
participants improved their throwing accuracy throughout the
acquisition period, there were no
performance differences seen
between the conditions at acquisition or retention. There were also
no differences in perceived workload between the conditions. These
results are expected if workload does, in fact, mediate the effect
of focus of attention on
motor skill
performance. With workload
demands similar, there exist no differences in
performance between
groups following different focus instructions. Further, the only
reliable predictor of
performance on the task was the participant’s
self-rating of expertise reported prior to participation. Future
between-subjects research designs in
motor learning should aim to
balance participants across groups using self-ratings of skill
level. Finally, the NASA-TLX should be used to measure workload in
the typical methodology used in direction of attention literature
and skill-relevance of focus literature, where
performance
differences have been observed, in order to determine whether
differences in workload demands could be partially responsible for
those
performance differences.; Attention,…

▼ Participants with Down syndrome (DS) as well as
typically developing peers matched for mental and chronological age
completed a 3-step movement sequence in response to visual
(lights), verbal (spoken word), meaningful auditory (music), and
non-meaningful auditory (tones) instructions. Results indicate that
participants with DS demonstrated slower reaction time in the
visual condition but were more consistent in their movement time
and made fewer errors suggesting they adopted a strategy in which
they traded speed for accuracy. Further, they were slowest, most
variable, and made the most errors in the non-meaningful auditory
condition indicating that the amount of meaning associated with the
method of instruction is an important determinant of motor
performance. These results support the assertion that motor
performance for persons with DS is determined in part by the unique
pattern of cerebral lateralization for this population while at the
same time demonstrating the importance of task and stimulus
familiarity.

▼ Background: Long-term training of specific motor tasks is associated with automatic execution of movements. Functional adaptation induced by training results in performance improvement. It is not yet fully understood whether functional adaptation is reflected by plasticity changes in brain structure. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the presence and degree of structural brain plasticity induced by long-term bimanual motor activity executed by professional typists. Subjects/Methods: We studied 17 right-handed professional typists. Using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), we correlated duration of practice and gray matter volume. Local regions of interest (ROI) -VBM was applied using predefined 116 previously segmented brain sites (from the anatomical automatic labeling library) and MARSBAR package. Results: We found a significant positive regression between GMV and duration of practice in six regions: left medial inferior cerebellar hemisphere, right medial inferior cerebellar hemisphere, right medial orbital region, right paracentral lobule and the right temporal pole. Discussion: Our study suggests that long-term typewriting practice may yield macroscopic changes in brain structures of healthy adults. Non-mirror sequential bimanual finger activity coordination creates a demand in cortical regions related to the programming of motor task, including the supplementary motor area, prefrontal cortices and cerebellum. Conclusion: Neural plasticity occurs in adult brain. Long-term bimanual training may increase GMV in specific brain areas of cerebral cortex and cerebellum. These regions are related to bimanual motor coordination and planning, which are important for typing

▼ Lumbar radiculopathy is defined as compression of a lumbar nerve root, resulting in
motor, sensory and, or reflex changes, correlating with the effected segment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigations remain the gold standard for diagnosis of this condition. However, research studies provide evidence for the limitations of imaging to define the functional impact of various spinal conditions. The present study considered the impact of lumbar nerve compression on
motor performance during a Fitts’ lower limb reaching task. Participants were stratified into three groups based on lumbar imaging and clinical presentation. Group 1 included subjects with imaging indicating lumbar nerve root compression, who presented with neurological deficit. Group 2 subjects demonstrated imaging evidence of nerve compression, without
motor, sensory or reflex change. Group 3 were neurologically intact, and possessed degenerative changes on lumbar imaging films.
Movement time (MT), reaction time (RT), peak acceleration (PA), peak velocity (PV), time to peak acceleration (ttPA), time to peak velocity (ttPV), constant error (CE), absolute error (AE) and variable error (VE) were analyzed using 3 Group (1,2,3) by 4 ID (3,4a,4b,5) ANOVA models. The sole main effect for group was AE, where subjects in group 1 tended to land further from the target, compared to those in group 3.
A 2 Group (effected, non-effected limb) by 4 ID (3,4a,4b,5) ANOVA model revealed longer MTs and lower PVs for the effected limb in group 2. Between limb comparisons determined lower PAs and longer ttPAs for the non-dominant limb in group 3. There were no main effects for group, or group by ID interactions found between limbs for group 1. However, a tendency to undershoot the target at larger amplitudes of movement was a characteristic shared by group 1 and 2 participants.
Sub-analysis of between limb differences, using limb dominance to stratify subjects yielded main effects for PA and PV for group 2, when the dominant leg was the effected leg. The effected, dominant limb exhibited lower values for PA and PV, compared to the non-dominant, non-effected limb. Alterations in accuracy were noted for groups 1 and 2 when the non-dominant limb was impacted. The results align with the serial hybrid control theory regarding lateralization.
Pearson’s Correlation analysis revealed many significant correlations for groups 2 and 3 between self-report measures and
motor performance variables. There was a lack of association between subjective and objective measures in group 1, which suggests that the presence of neurological deficit may impede evaluation of functional capability.
Overall, imaging did not predict most aspects of functional
performance, when legs were collapsed for analysis. However, the Fitts’ task was able to differentiate groups, by way of accuracy evaluation and within group, between limb comparisons.

▼ Background: Preschool age children born very preterm, <30 weeks’ gestation, that do not have a major neurological condition such as cerebral palsy may present with motor impairments and reduced postural control compared with children born at term. Preschool age is an important time in child development, where there is greater complexity in children’s motor skill in which postural control is fundamental in contributing to stability and execution of movement. Persisting or emerging motor delay may become evident at preschool age and may affect the child’s performance which can have an impact on successful transitioning to school. There is little known on motor performance and postural control in very preterm children compared with term children at preschool age.
Objectives: This thesis explored the motor performance and postural control of very children born <30 weeks’ gestational age at 4-5 years. The aims were as follows:
• To review the literature on motor performance and postural control in preterm preschool age children, including a review of assessment tools relating to motor outcome and postural control.
• To compare motor performance and postural control in very preterm and term children aged 4-5 years.
• To determine the relationship between children’s level of motor performance and their postural control at age 4-5 years.
Methods: A cohort of 105 very preterm preschool age children and a control group of 40 term-born children at 4-5 years of age were assessed on two motor outcome assessments and an assessment of postural control, the Wii Balance Board that has not been previously used in the paediatric population.
Results: Overall very preterm children showed poorer motor performance compared with term children. A greater proportion of VPT children compared with term children had motor impairment when assessed with the NSMDA and the MABC-2. Very preterm children had reduced postural control compared with their term peers. They demonstrated greater postural sway in balance tasks that had various sensory conditions, dual tasking as well as static balance tasks. Reduced functional performance was also observed in VPT children in dynamic balance tasks compared with term children.
There was a negative relationship between motor impairment and postural control in all preschool age children. This indicated that children with a motor impairment demonstrated reduced postural control. Overall lower motor performance scores on the NSMDA and MABC-2 were correlated with increased postural sway and reduced functional performance in balance tasks. ▼ We explored the potential mediating influence of physical fitness on the relationship between academic performance and motor proficiency in children.
1864 students (F:926, M:938, age 11.91 (SD:0.34). Academic achievement was derived from an average of standardized tests of reading, writing, and math. The Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Performance (short-form) determined motor proficiency. Fitness (peak oxygen uptake) was established with the Léger 20-m Shuttle Run Test.
OLS regression identified several significant predictors of academic performance. After controlling for age (p=0.0135), gender (p<0.0001), and parental education (p<0.0001), motor proficiency (p<0.0001), was significant. After adding physical fitness (p=0.0030) to the model the effect of motor proficiency remained significant however the point estimate was reduced from 0.0034 (p<0.0001) to 0.0026 (p<0.0001).
These results suggest that physical fitness plays a mediating role on the relationship between academic performance and motor proficiency although both aerobic fitness and motor proficiency have independent roles.

▼ An economy of effort is a core characteristic of highly skilled
motor performance often described as being effortless or automatic. Electroencephalographic (EEG) evaluation of cortical activity in elite performers has consistently revealed a reduction in extraneous associative cortical activity and an enhancement of task-relevant cortical processes. However, this has only been demonstrated under what are essentially practice-like conditions. Recently it has been shown that cerebral cortical activity becomes less efficient when
performance occurs in a stressful, complex social environment. This dissertation examines the impact of
motor skill training or practice on the EEG cortical dynamics that underlie
performance in a stressful, complex social environment. Sixteen ROTC cadets participated in head-to-head pistol shooting competitions before and after completing nine sessions of skill training over three weeks. Spectral power increased in the theta frequency band and decreased in the low alpha frequency band after skill training. EEG Coherence increased in the left frontal region and decreased in the left temporal region after the practice intervention. These suggest a refinement of cerebral cortical dynamics with a reduction of task extraneous processing in the left frontal region and an enhancement of task related processing in the left temporal region consistent with the skill level reached by participants. Partitioning
performance into ‘best’ and ‘worst’ based on shot score revealed that deliberate practice appears to optimize cerebral cortical activity of ‘best’ performances which are accompanied by a reduction in task-specific processes reflected by increased high-alpha power, while ‘worst’ performances are characterized by an inappropriate reduction in task-specific processing resulting in a loss of focus reflected by higher high-alpha power after training when compared to ‘best’ performances. Together, these studies demonstrate the power of experience afforded by practice, as a controllable factor, to promote resilience of cerebral cortical efficiency in complex environments.

▼ Previous studies have shown that verbalization, in the form of self-guided instruction, is an effective cognitive strategy used to enhance motor skill acquisition and motor performance. However, past research has not explicitly examined which aspects of motor output are affected (whether beneficially or deleteriously) by verbalization. In the current study, we conducted two separate experiments in which a total of 80 healthy participants, ages 18-27, completed a novel motor sequence learning task. Half of the participants in each Experiment were pretrained in the sequence using verbalization, while the other half was either trained motorically, or not trained at all. Rote memorization of verbal labels facilitated motor learning, motor control, performance speed, and set maintenance, but not motor planning. Potential underlying mechanisms as well as clinical implications are discussed.

▼ Utilization of an external focus of attention has been proved to be beneficial in the
motor learning literature. When people focus on the effects of the movement (i.e., external focus of attention), the
motor skill is enhanced compared to directing attention to the body movements (i.e., internal focus of attention). Previous studies that have examined the effect of focus of attention on learning a
motor skill often used visible or imagined objects to elicit an external focus of attention. However, the effects of these different types of external focus instruction have not been investigated thoroughly. It was unclear prior to this thesis how the focus of attention effect is influenced by the use of imagery. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the difference between directing attention to a visible object and an imagined object when performing and learning the standing long jump. It was hypothesized the group of participants who practiced with an imagery instruction would perform similarly in the post-test with or without an object that was used to elicit an external focus of attention. It was also hypothesized the group of participants who practiced with a visible object would perform similarly during the post-test with the same visible object; but the
performance would decline in the post-test with no object. The results indicated there was no difference in the effect of the two different types of instructions. That is,
performance during the practice and post-test were similar for the participants who imagined an object during the practice phase compared to the participants who practiced with an object. The post-test with and without an object were also similar within the same group as well as between the two groups. The results of the study provided additional evidence vision does not influence the focus of attention effect. Participants that practiced the standing long jump with a visible cone did not change the
performance on the transfer test when the cone was removed. Also, participants that were instructed to direct their attention toward an imaginary cone performed just as well as participants that focused their attention on a visible cone on both the retention and transfer test. Therefore, the primary finding of the present experiment is that the focus of attention effect can be induced through the use of imagery.

▼ Musicians as performers are particularly susceptible to the negative effects of Music Performance Anxiety (MPA). The effects of MPA on attention and motor skills can be profound yet are under-researched. This thesis explores musical performance from a motor-learning perspective, examines the effects of MPA on motor control and attention, and analyzes coping strategies of elite professional classical brass players. A learning framework based in theories of embodied cognition is subsequently proposed for insulating musical performance against the deleterious effects of MPA.

The presence of individual differences in motor performance of children and teenagers of the same age group is a reported aspect for much of the literature. This study chose the model of perceptual-motor abilities to explore these differences and focused on issue of different central nervous system development levels (CNS). Since most of the studies investigate perceptual-motor abilities in adults and it is not known how the CNS level affects the association between ability and motor performance. This study aimed to investigate the association between perceptual-motor abilities and performance of motor tasks in individuals of 7 and 13 years old. The sample refers to subjects who participated in the study of mixed longitudinal motor growth and development in the city of Muzambinho - Minas Gerais/Brazil. It was selected 110 individuals, balanced in terms of gender and age. The perceptual-motor abilities analysed were the multilimb coordination (MC), coincident timing (CT),…

▼ The objective of this study was to investigate
motor performance, academic
performance, and the sense of self-efficiency among elementary school students in a public school in São José, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The sample consisted of 406 children enrolled in the 2nd to 4th grades, aged 7 to 10 years (8.75 years; 1.00), with 231 girls (8.74 years; 1.02) and 175 boys (8.77 years; 0.99). Data was collected through three measurement instruments: Movement Assessment Batery for Children (MABC; HENDERSON &SUGDEN, 1992); Teste de Desempenho Escolar (TDE; STEIN, 1994) and Roteiro para Avaliação do Senso de Auto-eficácia (RASAE; MEDEIROS &LOUREIRO, 1999). The participants were characterized through consultation of their Scholastic Registry Files, made available by the school. For data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Based on normality tests, only non-parametric statistics were used: Mann-Witneys U, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-Squared (X2), Cramers V, Gamma (_), and Spearmans p. In all analyses, a 5% (p<0.05) significance was adopted. We verified that the most frequent learning difficulties among participants were in writing (n=178, 43.8%), followed by arithmetic (n=146; 36%); and reading (n=101; 24.9%). The indicative incidence for general learning difficulty was 31.3% (n=127). No statistically significant associations between sexes were found concerning writing, arithmetic, and/or reading. However, in the general
performance, girls obtained better results. The total values of the TDE point out a greater prevalence of difficulties among males; however, this was not shown statistically. Upon comparing
motor abilities in both genders, we verified that girls showed better performances in the tasks which required balance, while the boys did better in activities involving a ball. The results were also verified in age groups. The 7-8 year old girls presented better balance, similar to the total sample results, as well as demonstrated better manual dexterities. On the other hand, boys in both age groups did better in ball abilities, when compared to the opposite sex. In what concerns
motor performance classification, while the majority of the children had presented normal
motor abilities, we verified that a percentage of the
motor problems defined surpasses the levels pointed out in literature (4-6% incidence). There was co-occurrence of learning difficulties and
motor problems, with statistically significant associations found in arithmetic, reading, and general learning. Concerning self-efficiency, one can attest that in this study, the greater the
motor and academic
performance demonstrated, the greater the self-efficiency. Based upon the high number of schools identified as having academic and
motor difficulties, as well as the influence of self-efficiency in these factors, we suggest further study be undertaken, albeit with a probabilistic focus, seeking to present official estimates of the number of children in Brazilian schools affected with such problems, as well as means for subsequent…

▼ Vehicle suspension optimisation is a complex and difficult task, as there are a variety of factors influencing the dynamic performance of a vehicle. During suspension development, the optimisation of a selected few of these factors is often to the detriment of others, as they are all inter-related. In addition, expertise in vehicle setup and suspension tuning is scarce, and is limited to experienced racing teams and large automotive manufacturers with extensive research and development capabilities. The motivation for this research was therefore to provide objective and user-friendly methodologies for vehicle suspension optimisation, in order to support student projects like Formula Student, while having relevance to the needs of the South African automotive industry and racing community. With the onset of digital data acquisition, it has become feasible to take real-time measurements of tyre temperatures, to provide information on how a tyre is performing at a specific point on the track. Measuring the tyre surface temperature can provide a useful indication on whether the tyre is loaded equally or not, and what suspension adjustments should be made to improve tyre load distribution.

▼ Motor resonance is
motor activation that occurs in the body when one observes or thinks about movement.
Motor resonance is thought to assist in automatic imitation, the development of language (i.e., watching others speak helps a person learn to move their mouth to form the words), the development of empathy (i.e., watching others get hurt makes a person automatically flinch), and the development of
motor ability (i.e., watching someone ride a bike should help a person ride it later), all of which have been reported to be impaired in persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Thus, the phenomenon of
motor resonance may relate in important ways to the social, language, affective, and
motor atypicalities commonly observed in persons with ASD. The present study used social stimuli (e.g., videos of hand movements), nonsocial stimuli (e.g., videos of a tire spinning), and language stimuli (e.g., sentences about movement) to examine the presence of
motor resonance in individuals with ASD. Tweny-six individuals with ASD and 26 age-and-IQ-matched individuals with typical development (between the ages of 16 and 30) completed a
motor resonance computer game in which each video or sentence portrayed a clockwise or counter-clockwise movement. Participants were instructed to respond to the stimuli by rotating a joystick either clockwise or counter-clockwise in response to a colored square presented on the screen. Because
motor resonance facilitates responses in the same direction as the observed movement (congruent condition) and inhibits responses in the opposite direction of the observed movement (incongruent condition), quicker congruent responses compared to incongruent responses indicate the presence of
motor resonance. The results indicated that individuals with ASD demonstrated a similar pattern of
motor resonance compared to individuals with typical development. However, the degree of
motor resonance was negatively correlated with current social symptom severity of the ASD group, suggesting that those with more severe social ASD symptoms demonstrated less
motor resonance. Contrary to hypotheses,
motor resonance was not related to empathy in either group. However, postural sway in persons with ASD was related to both empathy and autism symptom severity. (Published By University of Alabama Libraries)

▼ In the human motor development process, it is seen components such as motor abilities and those related to the motor performance; they are represented by physical skills. At the age of two, a child already possesses the necessary base to explore the environment in varied and independently forms. It is at this moment that the learning of the basic motor skills is initiated (GALLAHUE and OZMUN, 2005; PAYNE AND ISSACS, 2007; ECKERT, 1993). Around the age of five, the child begins the combination of these motor skills to their extending motor repertoire. From this stage on, the experience and the changes due to the growth and maturation will propitiate, in an impacting way, the development of some physical skills and the improvement in the motor performance. The aim was at evaluating the physical education program (PROEFI) in the motor performance of children from five to seven years old in public schools of Plano Piloto, Distrito Federal. The results of explosive muscular strength of lower limbs and agility of pre and post tests were compared between 200 children of four kindergarten schools: three experimental groups and one control group. The tests were, respectively, the standing long jump and the shuttle run test. The statistics was, initially, a descriptive one, followed by the analysis of the variance of repeated measures (level of significance adopted of p≤0,05 and posthoc of Tukey) and the analysis of covariance for those variables in which groups have initiated the tests with different values. The results showed no clear tendency between the experimental and the control groups before or after the intervention. In the standing long lump, two schools have impacting improved their performance, while the other two, including the control group, have not reached the same result. Besides that, one of the schools of the experimental group has greatly improved its performance results in relation to the control group school. In the shuttle run test, one school has shown great improvement in its results, while the other three, including the control group, have shown the same results. This same school showed a tendency to significance when compared to the control group school. When genders and grades are compared, boys and older children had better results than girls and younger children. Although having presented huge differences in comparison to individual evaluation, these two groups have demonstrated receiving equivalent influence when submitted to the evaluated motor program.

▼ Although the significant increases in cancer cure indices, the term cancer still causes impact in our lives. Many studies and the practice observation of the chilhood cancer problematic allow us to affirm that neoplasics illnesses and the leukemia, in particular, can affect negatively the general course of development of the affected children. Considering that the ideal development of the psycomotor, cognitive, affective and social aspects take to a good life quality, the present study had as main objective to investigate motor performance and life quality of leukemia children in treatment. The study is exploratory, characterized as co relational descriptive, with transversal cut and quanti-qualitative result analysis. Twenty children between seven and ten years of age participated of the study; They were with leukemia diagnosis and were treating at the Oncohematology Service, in Child Hospital Joana de Gusmão, reference in chilhood cancer treament in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. To collect information about the motor performance and the life quality, the ABC test of child movement (Movement ABC) and the children and teenage life quality questionnaire (AUQEI) were used; beyond consults to the hospital child handbook, searching clinical information. As results of the study, were evidenced satisfactory results in both tests and it was observed a positive correlation between the motor performance and the life quality presented by children.
(more)
▼ Research on the focus of attention (FOA) has been ongoing since initial experiments over 15 years ago (see Wulf, 2007a; 2007b). Since that time, research on the FOA has evolved considerably and experimental data has revealed physiological changes underlying behavioral effects of attention. These experimental developments integrate the FOA with other robust findings in
motor learning and control (e.g., choking under pressure and implicit learning). This dissertation investigates how an external FOA (e.g., on the goal of a movement) leads to better
performance than an internal FOA (e.g., on the body's own movement). Previous research has measured movement outcomes (e.g., accuracy) but not the quality of movement itself (e.g., neuromuscular efficiency, movement variability, movement kinematics). Thus, the current experiments use biomechanical analysis and surface electromyography to explore the role of attention in coordinating movement at the neuromuscular level up to the level of the movement outcome. Data from five experimental studies in this dissertation suggest that attention changes the control structure of the
motor system: an external focus of attention reduces variation in the nominal, goal-dimension of the task, whereas an internal focus of attention reduces variation in the pattern of the movement itself (at the expense of task
performance; Chapter 4). Underlying the effects of an internal focus of attention are increases in cocontraction of the muscles around a given joint (Chapters 2 and 3). Increasing mechanical impedance in the limb by increasing cocontraction is useful for reducing variability in the movement pattern, but has ancillary consequences of reducing movement efficiency and, often, effectiveness. Furthermore, the FOA appears to affect the
performance of learned
motor skills rather than the rate of learning itself (Chapter 5). These findings suggest significant expansion of current theories on the focus of attention in order to predict these physiological changes that mediate the attention-
performance relationship. A neurophysiological framework for the role of attention in
motor control is present in Chapter 6, based on these findings. This framework posits that an internal focus of attention invokes
motor control structures that were active early in the learning process (e.g., dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) impairing coordination, efficiency, and effectiveness.

▼ Sport has become a very competitive business and
focus has been placed on reaching ones full potential. Visual
involvement in a sport varies according to environmental demands
associated with that sport. These environmental demands are matched
by a task specific
motor response. The primary aim of this study
was to determine if visual skills training programmes could produce
beneficial
performance results for cricket and soccer players. In
order to measure the athletic ability of a cricket and soccer
player it is important not only to measure the hardware visual
skills of the player, but also the player’s hand-eye co-ordination
ability and software visual skills. Thus, aspects of the nervous
system such as perceptual
motor co-ordination, reaction time and
anticipation ability should also be measured to get an indication
of the player’s
performance ability. In this study highly skilled
cricket players and highly skilled soccer academy players, who were
actively participating at a provincial level of competition, served
as subjects. Due to professional reasons, the soccer academy
players had to withdraw from this study. The provincial cricket
players continued for the duration of the programme. Thus, due to
the abovementioned the aim of this study was two fold, to determine
whether statistically significant differences exist between the pre
and post-training measurements of cricket players on several visual
skills tests and secondly to determine whether statistically
significant differences exist between the pre-training measurements
of cricket and soccer players on the various visual skills
measurements. The data of the variables tested were coded in
computer format and statistically evaluated. Since the sample is
relatively small non-parametric statistics were used to analyse the
data. Two different Non-parametric t-tests were used: the Wilcoxon
test is the distribution-free analogue of the t-test for related
samples and the Mann-Whitney test is the distribution-free
alternative to the independent samples t-test and was used for
testing the differences between the means of the cricket players
and the soccer players. After the initial testing the cricket
players participated in an eight-week visual skill and
performance
skills programme for 60 minutes a day, once a week. The programme
included sports vision activities, speed and agility activities and
ball skills activities. Hereafter a retest was done. The
pre-training and post-training values of the cricket players were
recorded and significance of difference was determined by using the
Wilcoxon signed-ranks test. The experimental research revealed that
the visual skills programme did have a significant influence on
most of the tested variables (ball handling skills, co-ordination,
visual awareness, eye tracking skills, accuracy, peripheral
awareness, pro-action – reaction skills and visual concentration).
For some variables that were tested on the experimental group (the

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of knowledge about the camcorders presence on motor performance assessed by the Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2; Ulrich, 2000). Participants were 31 male scholars, ranging from 7 to 9 years of age, who responded the STAI trait-state anxiety questionnaire, before and during the motor test. The 12 motor skills of the TGMD-2 were performed in two conditions: visible and hidden cam. Each participant was tested on both conditions, with a three-month time interval. A procedure of counterbalancing the sample in each condition were used for both moments. T tests for paired samples indicated significant differences between conditions, the performances having been better when the cam was visible in the subtest object control and in the general gross motor quotient. No significant correlations were detected among anxiety and motor performance. Moreover, on both conditions, the chi-square test showed that the level very poor on gross co-ordination were more frequent than the other levels (poor and below average). The findings were discussed through motivation theories about performance (self-determination, flow, and arousal)

Studies have shown the interaction among elements from task, person and environemnt may be influenced by each other. The aim of this study was to describe relations between opportunities afforded by toys and materials encountered into familiar and scholar contexts and the development of children between 36 and 42 months of age. Fifty-one children from public day care center have participated of this study. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children Second Edition (MABC-2) was applied to analyze the motor performance; the Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development (AHEMD) was used to verify the quality and quantity of opportunities of motor stimulation in the familiar context, and, an inventory named Opportunities of Motor Stimulation in the Scholar Context was used to control opportunities of motor stimulation on scholar context. Results concerning motor performance and opportunities in the familiar context was analyzed considering its protocols. The results indicate that there is no statistical significant relations between opportunities of motor stimulation in the familiar context for both overall and in different subscales (outside space, inside space, variety of stimulation, fine motor toys and gross motor toys) and the motor…
