▼ ‘A da’wah movement in
Mauritius: A study of the Jamaat-Ul-Muslimeen’ is based on qualitative research and its objective is to examine the socio-cultural factors that may hinder the processes of da’wah in
Mauritius. The study is placed in the context of a well-known national Islamic organisation, the Jamaat-Ul-Muslimeen whose founder is Mr. Muhammad Cehl Fakeemeeah, a Member of the National Parliament. The movement is also associated with a political party, the FSM (Front Solidarité Mauricien) or the Mauritian Solidarity Front.
The Jamaat-Ul-Muslimeen seeks to propose an alternative da’wah program in order to promote understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims and to accelerate the progression of conversion in
Mauritius. The movement is involved in politics and mass media in order to reach the maximum number of people in the island. Emphasis is put on the urgent need for each individual to understand the concept of God as well as reading the Qur’an in order to avoid falling into the traps of traditional da’wah which has prevailed in
Mauritius for decades. The present thesis analyses data provided in face to face interviews with a number of Mauritian converts as well as observation and discussions with other born Muslim members, all adherents of the said organisation.
The Mauritian society is well-known for its multi-religious and multi-cultural background, influenced mainly by the majority, the Hindu community which consists of more than 50 % of the whole population. According to Soonita Kistamah 1, the percentage of Muslims is only 17, 3 % of the whole Mauritian population and this demonstrates a large gap concerning the work of da’wah in the island. Therefore the thesis will investigate factors that hinder da’wah by focusing on one particular movement – the Jamaat Ul Muslimeen.
After having scanned the available literature, no specific study on da’wah in
Mauritius was found. There is therefore a gap in the knowledge of da’wah especially issues such as socio-cultural factors that may affect da’wah progression within the Mauritian context. This thesis is a contribution to filling this gap.
Since the thesis wishes to understand the socio-cultural factors which hinder the progress of da‘wah in
Mauritius a qualitative approach was deemed most appropriate to explore this issue.
The thesis begins providing my motivation for writing on the topic of da‘wah, a statement of the problem, research objectives, significance of the study, and the theory and methodology applied. Chapter II provides an overview of
Mauritius and its history. Emphasis is given to the events of the 12th March 1968, that is, the civil war which occurred between Christians and Muslims which led to ethnic tensions. Another communal crisis which occurred in February1999 between Black Creole and the Hindu community is also examined. Chapter III will provide a biography of Cehl Meeah, the founder of Jamaat-Ul-Muslimeen, his broader religious and political outlook and the history and da‘wah methodology of his organization. Chapter IV examines this…

▼ Coastal erosion is of increasing concern to rural Alaskan communities, yet direct measurements remain absent over much of the
coast. In southwestern Alaska, the village of Goodnews Bay has been repeatedly devastated by storms and flooding, events that forced the village to relocate to higher ground in the 1920s. Storm surge continues to damage property and infrastructure that is essential to their subsistence culture. This work assesses shoreline change rates at the new village site based on a 59-year time series of aerial and satellite imagery. Long-term and contemporary shoreline retreat rates were analyzed along nearly 500 meters of the village coastline. The majority of the bluff fronting the village experienced a complex history of erosion and mitigation, exhibiting a maximum erosion rate of -0.14 m/y (R2 = 0.82). Bluff erosion has been mitigated via depositing gravel and large rocks after significant storms. The unmitigated bluff just north of the village eroded at -0.10 m/y rate consistently across its length (R2 = 0.92), suggesting that measureable erosion would have also occurred at the village bluff in the absence of mitigation efforts. Projected future bluff top edge positions indicate that the main road system will be significantly eroded in the coming decades, but no buildings are projected to be directly impacted by 2050. Storm surge is the primary driver of erosion in Goodnews Bay, thus the reliability of local storm surge modeling is significant to the community. Historical storm surge and marine total water level estimates were quantified using a combination of GPS data, formal reports, anecdotal accounts, and post-storm imagery. These estimates were compared to the modeled height for the 11/11/2011 storm surge in order to assess accuracy of modeling in this area. Storms that caused significant damage had total water levels between 4.3 and 5.3 m above mean sea level. The upper limit of this estimate came from the large 2011 Bering Sea storm. Evidence for the total water level of previous storms was very limited. It is likely that the 1979 storm, which flooded four homes, reached a similar height. Damage from large storms is expected to become more prevalent with shorter land-fast sea ice seasons in Alaska. A significant portion of this research incorporated community outreach. This included educating youth about coastal science, discussing village history with elders, and installing community-based erosion monitoring sites. Through these efforts, we hope to preserve the traditional knowledge and increase local capacity to adapt to a changing climate.

▼ The study examined the factors that influence Ghanaians level of materialism. The study adopted the quantitative research design relying questionnaire as the main instruments for data collection. The target respondents were students from the University of Cape Coast. The simple random sampling technique was adopted to sample 383 respondents out of which 300 participated by responding to the questionnaires. The sample size of 383 was determined using the Cochran’s formula which is considered especially appropriate in situations with large populations. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis as well as regression analysis. The variables that were identified in literature to influence materialism include power prestige dimension, retention time dimension, distrust dimension and anxiety dimension.
Among these four variables the descriptive analyses showed that retention time dimension had the highest grand mean score of 5.20 which was followed by distrust dimension with a mean score of 3.92. the variable with the least mean score was power prestige dimension which had a mean score of 2.80.
The correlation analysis showed that there was positive relationship between all the four independent variables and materialism in Ghana. However, the relationship between distrust dimension and materialism and anxiety dimension and materialism were the two that were statistically significant at 1% significance level. The other two variable power prestige dimension and retention time dimension were statistically insignificant. The regression analysis showed that only anxiety dimension and distrust dimension were significant determinants of materialism in Ghana. Power prestige and retention time dimension were statistically insignificant.

▼ This thesis establishes the earliest appearance of ground slate points at 50 locations throughout the Northwest
Coast of North America. Ground slate points are a tool common among maritime hunter-gatherers, but rare among hunter-gatherers who utilize terrestrial subsistence strategies; ground slate points are considered one of the archaeological hallmarks of mid-to-late Holocene Northwest
Coast peoples. The appearance of ground slate points in the archaeological record is frequently marked by a concurrent decline in the prevalence of flaked stone points, a phenomenon often referred to as "the ground slate transition." Until now, the specific timing of the appearance of these tools has been ill-defined, and a number of competing theories have arisen to explain the apparent preference for ground slate points over flaked points by prehistoric peoples. By drawing upon a sample of 94 artifact assemblages from 50 sites in Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington, I have constructed a database of artifacts counts, provenience information, and radiocarbon dates which allows for inter-site comparisons of the earliest appearance of the technology. My research has identified a general north to south trend in the appearance of slate points; which begin to appear in the archaeological record around 6,300 cal BP in southeast Alaska, to 2,900 cal BP in Puget Sound. There are notable exceptions to this pattern, however. Given that these data are drawn from both cultural resource management reports and academic literature, I have qualified these findings by addressing some of the common problems of making inter-site comparisons, such as the comparability of radiometric dates, which I address by undertaking a radiocarbon hygiene program. The chronology constructed here provides an important tool for evaluating theories about the ground slate transition, and thereby aiding in untangling the link between aquatic subsistence strategies and technological decision making.

At the world scale, coastal areas can be divided in several categories: rocky, sandy, muddy and mixed coasts. However, these sedimentary coasts are regularly found mixed. Temporary or permanent mud inputs are observed on the sandy beaches. These atypical mixed environments, coupling erosional, transports and deposits processes associated to cohesive and non-cohesive sediments have been poorly studied. So, understanding theirs morphological and sedimentary dynamics and the identification of regional and local forcings driving them are essential. Four sandy-muddy or fully sandy Low-Tide-Terrace beaches from the bay and estuary of Vilaine (South-Brittany) have been monthly monitored over two years to characterize their morphodynamics beahaviors. Specific monitoring of coupled hydrodynamics and morpho- sedimentary surveys and photogrammetry experiments have been conducted on mixed sandy- muddy or full sandy beaches. At a regional scale, this work highlights the role of the initial morphology and regional geology inheritance on the morphological response of the littoral zones…

▼ This thesis examines young people’s constructions of nationhood in Mauritius. In 2008, the Mauritian government instituted a Truth and Justice Commission (TJC), set up to investigate the consequences of slavery and indentured labour. Through the Truth and Justice Commission, the Mauritian government indicated its desire to achieve social justice and national unity. Drawing on developments in studies of national identification practices in the 21st Century, this thesis addresses the question of young Mauritian’s locally and globally informed identification practices and asks how their unofficial narratives of nationhood challenge, or divert, or relate to official state narratives of nationhood. The basis of the study emerges from data collected from 132 participants during fieldwork in multiple fieldsites from May to September 2010 as well as research on Mauritian youth on-line from 2011-2014. The advent of the TJC offers an ideal moment to evaluate the dynamics of post-colonial nation-building and nationhood in a selfstyled multi-cultural state. Nationhood, does not exist apriori to the constructions of narratives of the nation, thus the stories told about the nation, imagine the nation into being. By situating the Truth and Justice Commission and other official state narratives alongside young people’s narratives, I argue that contemporary narratives of nationhood in Mauritius represent an intergenerational struggle to define the meaning of the past in the present and consequently outline the future. Reflecting on the ideas and socio-economic and political processes that induce national consciousness, I argue that young people’s narratives of everyday lived experiences are vital for an interpretation of how nationhood is produced in everyday life. The cultural projects of young people – often rendered as liminal or marginal – offer a critical vantage point from where to read constructions of nationhood. Far from being growing pains or childish games, young people’s identity making practices are what Sherry B. Ortner has called “serious games.” This research suggests that official state government narratives of multicultural nationhood in Mauritius narrowly define national identification along communal loyalties, overlooking the dynamism of interculturality and transnationalism in daily practice on the island. Although communalism and rigid colonial interpretations of ethnicity attempt to police and limit the possibilities of alternative modes of being in Mauritius, young people’s identification practices question, challenge, and threaten to disrupt official discourses of ethnic identification in Mauritius Scholarly investigations of young peoples’ lived experiences of nationhood extend theoretical and methodological frames for the study of nationalized subjects and deepen the understanding of the construction of national consciousness. The construction of nationhood always involves narratives of some sort – scholarship on this area has usually focused on official state narratives from social theorists, state…

▼ Introduction: The right to life is very fundamental, yet every year a lot of workers are deprived of that right by occupational accidents and work related diseases. This is perhaps just the tip of the iceberg, as data for estimating nonfatal illness and injury are not available in most developing countries. Therefore, this study examined Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) among practitioners in public University Hospitals, using University of Cape Coast and University of Ghana Hospitals. The study sought to specifically identify regulatory frameworks governing OHS in Public Universities and establish their adequacy and conformity with national and international OHS legislations, Identify OHS concerns in Public Universities of Ghana and determine their effects on productivity and also ascertain the commitment of management of public Universities of Ghana to OHS issues.
Methods: This was a cross sectional survey involving practitioners at the University of Ghana Hospital and University of Cape Coast Hospital. Data was collected at a particular point from the respondents using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was in four parts. The first part of the questionnaire addressed the demographics of the respondents and the respondents’ understanding of health and safety. Thus, the first were items that required background check on the respondents. The second part of the questionnaire was made up of hazards that employees face at the hospital. The third part of the questionnaire covered items that measured thus, health and safety policies at the hospitals and whether management provides a safety environment at the hospitals. The last part contained adherence to health and safety at the hospitals. Data was entered into SPSS and analysed.
Results: Participants used in the study were aged 20 years and above with majority of them between the ages of 26 to 30 years. In terms of gender, majority of the participants at both hospitals were females. For type of profession, Allied health workers recorded the most percentage of the two hospitals followed by nurses. Leadership safety behaviour received high percentage of positive response from practitioners at the two University Hospitals (64.4% and 77.9%) A combine percentage of participants who comply and participate (often plus very often) in safety activities, showed that there was almost a similar behaviour at UG hospital and UCC hospital (59.4% and 59.0%, respectively).
Conclusion: The current study has shown that level of adherence to policy on health and safety at University of Ghana Hospital and the University of Cape Coast Hospital is high, with UCC hospital recording the highest in most areas. Also, it was observed that Occupational health and safety among practitioners was more likely to be because of Leadership Safety Behavior of the hospitals. Moreover, it can be concluded the number of practitioners that are involved in behaviors that are not likely to promote the personal safety directly but contribute to improving safety in workplace as well as are…

▼ On most tropical volcanic islands the risk for soil erosion is enhanced due to a complex topography, high intensity rainfall and the exploitation of land for agriculture.
Mauritius is a typical maritime tropical volcanic island with a distinct elevated interior. Rainfall is dominated by tropical weather systems and trade winds and the island is under intensive cultivation. Rainfall depth, duration, intensity, kinetic energy and erosivity were analysed for 385 erosive rainfall events at five locations over a five year period (2004 to 2008) on the island of
Mauritius. Two stations located on the west
coast and three stations sited on the Central Plateau above 550 m a.s.l. are used to provide detailed rainfall data at six minute intervals. Erosive storm events, defined here as a total rainfall exceeding 12.5 mm and a maximum 6-minute intensity exceeding 25 mm/hour, are found to differ markedly between the coastal lowlands and the elevated interior with regards to the frequency, the total rainfall generated, the duration, total kinetic energy and total erosivity of individual events. However, mean kinetic energy, mean and maximum rainfall erosivity (EI30) and maximum intensities (I30) from individual erosive events do not show this distinct differentiation. Erosivity measured during summer exceeds that recorded in winter, but the data indicate that large percentages of winter rainfall on
Mauritius are defined as erosive and non-tropical cyclone rainfall can pose a substantial erosion risk. In this maritime tropical environment with its elevated interior, soil erosion risk occurs from storm scale to synoptic scale rainfall events and extreme events generate the bulk of the erosivity. Findings show that using rainfall records at an event scale within soil erosion risk assessments on tropical islands with a complex topography will increase the effectiveness of erosivity estimates

▼ The introduction of legislation aimed at decreasing gender imbalances in
Mauritius has not led to an increase in women's access to parliament. While
Mauritius is not unique in this, it is an interesting case to examine because
Mauritius prides itself on being a leader in Africa as a democratic and strong middle-income country that has achieved success in many socio-economic areas. But
Mauritius is faced with a paradox: despite its abundance of gender-related legislation, it is lagging behind in gender equality at the national level, as manifest by the few women in parliament. Regarding this issue, little research has been done to examine the challenges of translating legislative gains into actual change. Albie Sachs, former judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa (2002), summarizes the Mauritian case by stating:
Mauritius can justly be proud of the admiration which its democratic life enjoys internationally. It cannot, however, hold up its head in terms of participation of women in political life. When half the population ends up with only a one-twentieth share of representation, it manifests a grave democratic deficit (as cited in Athal, 2012, p. 17).

▼ Rainfall can be the most erosive agent with respect
to rainfall induced erosion, particularly within the context of a
tropical maritime environment.
Mauritius provides an example of
such an environment, which, due to its location and elevated
topography, is
subject to frequent erosive rainfall events as well
as occasional cyclones which potentially threaten loss of soil and
may accelerate land degradation. Such intense rainfall forms a key
part of the “R-factor” in the USLE and RUSLE soil loss equations,
which are commonly used worldwide in deriving the soil loss of an
area. This project focuses on various attributes of rainfall
erosivity on the central and western parts of
Mauritius over a six
year assessment period. A steep rainfall gradient exists; 600mm in
the western plains and 4000mm per year in the higher central
region. Rainfall and erosivity attributes are investigated in these
two regions on the island to assess the role that topographic
elevation has on rainfall erosivity. Using the EI30 method to find
the “R-factor”, erosivity is calculated for the period of 2003 –
2008. Varying time intervals were used in calculating EI30 to
determine the value that high resolution data has in erosivity
calculations and is compared to the use of the Modified Fournier
Index. This project also speculates on the potential impacts of
changing rainfall intensity and erosivity associated with climate
change in the future. A difference was found in the erosivity
experienced in the elevated central interior and the rain-shadowed
western lava plains. Stations on the western plains recorded 25% of
the erosivity experienced by stations in the interior and large
differences were found in the number of erosive events, rainfall,
erosive rainfall totals, seasonality, and annual erosivity totals
of erosivity. The central interior showed greater variability in
R-factor values; however these remained similar in extent despite
the large difference in total annual rainfall and the number of
events that each station recorded. High resolution data did account
for erosivity that lower resolution does not, but the extent of
erosivity for all stations within the respective regions were
markedly similar. Use of the Modified Fournier Index caused
erosivity to be overestimated on the island when compared to the
EI30 method. Changes in erosivity are speculated to occur with
changes in rainfall intensities but the central interior of the
island will notice fluctuations in climate (with respect to
rainfall erosivity) more than the western plains.

▼ This thesis examines how holding a formal TVET qualification can construct a career path and
engage in the career success achievement process. The TVET reality in
Mauritius continues to
face stigmas and stereotyping: society at large considers that TVET is solely being reserved for
less academically brilliant people, catering for dropouts and failures of the academic stream.
This kind of poor reception towards TVET by the community has had a marked impact on
making TVET appear unattractive. The TVET stream constitutes an area in which employment
opportunities are extremely high. Career-minded people have not studied empirically the
attributions associated with TVET qualification holders who wish to achieve success in their
career journeys.
Career success is an important but often overlooked outcome of TVET qualification holders’
career experience. The fact is that finding the key determinant to career success of TVET
qualification holders as employees continues to be critically important to employees, being
concomitantly significant for employers. Understanding the intrinsic and extrinsic career
success predictors of this specific category of workers will help future employees to navigate
both their professional and personal lives. The ultimate objective of this study is to critically
investigate the extent of the journey of some TVET qualification holders before they reach
their career success destination. Whether they faced any particular hindrances or opportunities
en route is the
subject of the study.
The study used a qualitative research approach from an interpretive paradigm. The method
adopted for the present study is a narrative enquiry. The narratives of four former TVET
students holding formal TVET qualifications were collected, and an analysis from their stories
iii
was made. The study draws on social, human capital theories. It also partly uses the capability
approach element of functioning, from Amartya Sen.
Findings suggest that there were some influential factors that had pushed students into the
TVET stream. A discussion thereon would digress from the main objectives of the study. The
experiences of these TVET students suggest that they were adequately engaged during their
studies. The study suggests that these participants had linear career paths. The predictors of
their career success consisted of both objective and subjective career success elements. TVET
was the key player in achieving career success.
Suggestions for future research, and implications for policymakers, practitioners, researchers,
and TVET providers, are provided.

▼ In the past two decades, occurrences of summertime upwelling-driven low dissolved oxygen (DO) events, or hypoxia, have increased along the northeast Pacific
coast. If hypoxic events are severe enough to cause marine species mortality, the areas affected are often called "dead zones." In 2002 and again in 2006, the events were lethal, resulting in mass invertebrate and fish kills. Many organisms are impacted by these events, but less mobile juvenile fishes and crabs are potentially more vulnerable to the long-term effects of these stressful conditions than adults. Little is known about how low DO impacts coastal fishes and invertebrates, especially during the juvenile phase. Nursery habitats in the nearshore open-
coast and enclosed estuaries may be differentially affected by hypoxia by prevailing summertime oceanographic conditions. Both ecosystems are critical for the early development of many ecologically and commercially important species. While one habitat may be compromised by stressful environmental conditions, the other may provide refuge.
In upwelling driven areas, low dissolved oxygen is typically coupled with colder water, while in estuarine or semi-enclosed systems, dissolved oxygen diminishes with increasing temperatures. Temperature and dissolved oxygen are known to have interactive effects on fish behavior and physiology, which underscores the importance of studying hypoxia within different systems and in relation to other co-occurring environmental variables. In order to isolate the effects of these parameters on growth, I conducted three experiments over the course of two years on juvenile Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) and English sole (Parophrys vetulus). During each experiment, I held English sole in the lab in fixed oxygen and temperature conditions for at least thirty days, and Dungeness crab for approximately fifty. I tested a total of 15 oxygen and temperature treatment combinations, with at least two replicates of each treatment. These treatments simulated summertime oceanographic conditions that are typically found in two nursery habitats used by these species: the Yaquina Bay estuary and Moolack Beach, Oregon USA.
English sole specific growth (g d⁻¹) increased with higher temperatures (13 and 15°C) and oxygen concentrations (2.0 and 6.0 mL L⁻¹) and was up to four times lower in all low temperature and oxygen treatments (5 and 7°C; < 1.4 mL L⁻¹). Dungeness crab intermolt period decreased with temperature from 48 days at 5°C to 12 days at 15°C. Crab specific growth (mm d⁻¹) increased with temperature, with crabs in the highest temperatures growing nearly five times as much as crabs in the coldest temperatures.
Finally, if people have heard of hypoxia, it is commonly in relation to the condition found in the Gulf of Mexico, which is nutrient driven and can be traced to anthropogenic input. Instead, Oregon hypoxia is more difficult to trace directly to human-related activity, making West
Coast hypoxia a relatively lesser understood occurrence. In order to share the results of my…

Abstract
After the establishment of air and sea transportation links between Taiwan and
China, Penghu, which is geographically situated in the center of the cross-strait links
shall make good use of its transfer function, by taking advantage of its tax incentives
(duty-free) stipulated in "Offshore Island Development Act" and "Cross-strait Mini
Three Link Policy" to develop new industries that can satisfy the requirements of
"import consumption" and "export promotion." Penghu may foster closer economic
and trade ties between Taiwan and Fujian Province, promote cross-strait tourism,
expand cultural exchange, and develop sustainable industries that are necessary for
continuing the economic prosperity.
This study was conducted by a team of three students using the interactive
management approach to tackle the main theme of regional cooperative strategies
between Penghu and the Mainland special economic zones on the west
coast of
Taiwan Straits. The researchers looked into the sub-title issues from the economical,
social, and governmental aspects respectively. The theoretical framework of this study
was based on the public affairs management and research method – Interactive
Management (IM). To make the research results more comprehensive, the interactive
management approach was combined with two methods often used in framework
analysis: nominal group technology (NGT) and interpretative structure model (ISM).
Together with literature review, expert interviews and data collection methods, the
researchers gathered all relevant information about Penghu so as to provide a more
objective basis for exploring the strategic economic cooperation between Penghu and
the Mainland special economic zone on the west
coast of Taiwan Straits. To ensure
good progress in the panel discussion and anticipate fruitful results from discussions
of various sub-titles to turn into specific strategies, the interactive discussion seminar
invited local representatives in order to incorporate the views of the people in Penghu.
This information can provide reliable reference for the central government planning
units in their policy formulation process.
Using this approach can solve the problem of suspending issues whenever the
interactive management (IM) is used. The seminar was joined by 27 representatives
from all walks of life. The NGT process started from exposing the issues, clarifying
the issues, voting for the issues, to making paired comparisons, supplemented by ISM
software, and finally resulted in enhanced structural clearness and visually
understandable connectivity. After panel discussions over the structural charts,
appropriate revisions, and confirmation of a final version, 12 economic strategies
were produced from discussions of regional cooperation between Penghu and the
Mainland special economic zone on the west
coast of the Taiwan Straits.These
recommendations are given below: (1) requesting the…

▼ Analysis of the Social Aspect of the Strategy for Cooperation

Western Side of the Taiwan Strait
Abstract
In this study, we (Wen-Chang Hsu, Chen-yu Wu and myself) analyzed possible
strategies for cooperation between Penghu and Chinaâs Economic Zone on the
Western Side of the Taiwan Strait (SWZ) within the aspects of economy, government
and society. The study is based on the public affairs management (PAM) framework.
Applying the interactive management (IM) method used from PAM policy analysis, as
well as the nominal group technique (NGT) method and the interpretive structural
modeling (ISM) method used for project analysis, interactive management seminars
were held with participants from industries, government, academic fields, peopleâs
representatives and media representatives.
The participants were engaged in sessions for idea generation, opinion writing
and recording onto panel papers on the wall. The sessions also included in-sequence
description and discussion to clear up problems, categorization of problems according
to fields, key problem voting, problem sorting by votes and fields, and problem
selection according to scores. The ISM method was then used to build and interpret
problematic structure, overlap problem areas, and generate an enforcement
structural diagram, which was reviewed and revised to come up with the strategic
analysis in the social aspect of âcooperation between Penghu and Chinaâs Economic
Zone on the Western Side of the Taiwan Straitâ. Through clearing up the enforcement
relationship between each item, an enforced structural relationship diagram was
created to identify the priority and enhancement sequence of each policy in its
implementation, as well as the objectives and directions. Twelve strategies have been
identified as follows in our strategic analysis in the social aspect of âcooperation
between Penghu and Chinaâs Economic Zone on the Western Side of the Taiwan
Straitâ. They are: 1.Establishment of communication between the two sides and a
mechanism for handling disputes over civil and commercial matters, as well as fishing
disputes, arising after intensive cross-strait exchanges, in order to achieve the purpose
of rapid processing; a civil communication mechanism and civil or arbitration system
can be relied on to rapidly deal with the issues in a professional manner before a
general-purpose processing mechanism is established; 2.With consensual support of
the majority of county people, effort should be spent in getting the central
governmentâs consent for setting Penghu as the sole gaming district and in
formulating a concrete plan for improving the competitiveness of Penghu; 3.The local
government should extensively accept the views of non-governmental organizations
to develop viable and effective business strategy, and to proactively win the central
governmentâs recognition in placing emphasis upon further development of
infrastructure to enhance the people's livelihood and to improve on the competitive
business environment in…

▼ While researchers have long recognized the disproportionate impact of natural disasters on racial and ethnic communities, research remains incomplete in examining the plight of Gulf Coast Vietnamese residents after Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This study presents a comprehensive, qualitative investigation of three different Vietnamese communities located in New Orleans, Biloxi, and Bayou La Batre and details how residents established and maintained nonprofit community based organizations in a region that previously saw little or no formal mobilization among Vietnamese residents. Existing studies tend to isolate the extent to which variables such as language, culture, social networks, and religious institutions, influence recovery outcomes. In contrast, this study, by drawing upon multiple avenues of data collection, including 54 in-depth interviews, fieldwork, and participant observation, provides an ethnographic analysis of immigrant community building via the unique circumstances of post-crisis community rebuilding. Findings reveal that despite the differences among by the study sites, one overarching theme emerges: new Gulf South Vietnamese organizations struggled to bridge gaps and build relationships as they sought to transition the community of inexperienced, naive, or complacent Vietnamese locals from loose, informal networks to structured organizational forms. This work examines the challenges faced by organizations as they become established and the strategies by which they grow and become sustainable. Suggestions for how ethnic organizations may better serve and perform outreach into Vietnamese enclaves are presented in the form of lessons learned. Ultimately, this study extends the established literature on the Vietnamese experience in the United States and contributes to the overall canon of research regarding Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

▼ Despite the apparent silence of librarians on the issue of conflict, conflict is alive in libraries as in other complex organisations. Peace and agreement among staff of libraries are required in order to provide efficient service to patrons and also guarantee the survival of libraries in Ghana
This study set out to investigate how conflicts are managed among the staff of University of Cape Coast library. The study assessed the common sources of conflict, types of conflict, and the positive and negative effects of conflict on the performance of library staff. The study employed descriptive research design and used questionnaire to collect data from 64 respondents who were drawn from various sections and units of the library. The questionnaires were all retrieved for analysis. Tables, frequencies, and percentages were used to analyze and present the data. Five conflict management approaches were reviewed and discussed.
The main results of the study were that conflict existed among staff, and the management techniques mostly employed were accommodation, compromising and collaboration. The study revealed power struggle, communication barrier, and poor rewarding system as the major causes of conflict, and that conflict have both negative and positive effects on the library.
The study recommended that in order to enhance the management of conflicts among library staff, management should ensure equitable distribution of resources, open up their lines of communication and discourage aggressive competition for positions in the library. Rules and regulations regarding promotions and other rewarding systems should be properly spelt out.

▼ The “advent of Open Source Software has provided low cost opportunities for libraries to transit from traditional to technology-based library services, which also gives room for more efficient service provision. This study investigated the use of Open Source Software in the Sam Jonah library, University of Cape Coast. The study adopted the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The study was based on survey research methodology and questionnaire was used to gather data from 113 respondents.”
The “study revealed that the use of Koha and Dspace, as adopted by the library were considered advantageous due to their flexibility, ease of modification, ease of accessibility and reliability. The study also discovered that the library staff do not really utilize the adopted open software as envisioned by the library management, as staff possessed only average computer literacy skills and knowledge in the use of open source software.
Again, the library’s main source of funding for use of the OSS was Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants. On the flipside, the study found out that some limitations, such as inadequate training, lack of expertise to train for and manage the software, breakdowns which require special expertise, vulnerability to malicious users, and inadequate user-friendliness of the software as compared to proprietary software. Therefore, the management of the library should put measures and policies in place to address the challenges being faced in the use of the Open Source Software, such as constant orientation and training of staff, provision of infrastructural support, provision of technical support and installation of robust antivirus software.

▼ Annual Blessing of the Fleet festivals are held throughout communities all along the Gulf Coast; each year boats parade down local waters to receive the blessing of the priest before the opening of the shrimp season. The shrimping industry has a long history in the area and has become intrinsically tied to local individual and community identities. This thesis investigates three festivals held in Chauvin and Morgan City, Louisiana, and Biloxi, Mississippi to understand how the festival is used by participants as a way of negotiating their shrimping identities in a changing socio-economic environment. The tourism and the oil industries have been encroaching on seafood communities and many individuals have switched into these often more lucrative occupations. As a result, the Blessing of the Fleet has become a tool for constructing, supporting, and representing a shrimping identity. By incorporating tourism and oil into the make-up of the festival the event becomes a reflection of the current socio-economic landscape. Simultaneously, by emphasizing a shrimping heritage in festival displays, participants are actively reinforcing their identities to themselves and the wider festival audience. The Blessing of the Fleet originated as a means of managing the dangers of the shrimping industry, now, as the danger shifts towards a loss of shrimping, the festival has become a means through which individuals are able to negotiate and maintain their shrimping identities.

▼ The main objective of this research study was to find out the various factors affecting the success of projects, with specific reference to the client’s related factors, consultant’s related and main contractor’s related factors. Completion of the construction project within the required cost, time and quality parameters was identified as the motivation for the study. The objectives of the study were achieved by reviewing literature relevant to the topic. The study investigated whether certain assumptions being made were corresponding with already published literature. Data were sourced both from primary and secondary sources. The quantitative part of the research was carried out by analyzing the literature and by envisaging possible scenarios which could be implemented for the completion of projects, within the three parameters (Time, cost and quality). Not being able to complete a project within the required cost, time and quality parameters will ultimately result in time and cost overruns up to the dissatisfaction of the client. As such, the various stages of the construction cycle need to be monitored and controlled as from the inception stage up to the close out stage by the various stakeholders involved on the project in order to obtain a positive project outcome. The research sample was focused mainly on professionals in the built environment, since a better understanding and reliable feedback would be obtained due to their understanding of the relevant topic. The study first introduces project management as a background, and then focuses on the different factors that influence successful project outcome.

▼ The field of ecocriticism has been growing rapidly since its beginnings in the early 1990s. Since then, critics like Elizabeth Deloughrey and Byron Caminero-Santangelo have indicated the importance of considering African works and their postcolonial contexts in these inquiries, as well as the remaining need to engage with francophone parts of the continent. With a growing interest in the field of postcolonial ecocriticism galvanized by the increasing environmental disasters across the African continent and the globe, contemporary women writers Ananda Devi, Tanella Boni and Fatou Diome offer invaluable perspectives on the various forms of environmental waste as they consider some of the myriad connections between material, human and cultural elements of pollution and degradation. Through the study of three novels, Devi’s Eve de ses décombres (2006), Boni’s Les baigneurs du lac Rose (1995), and Fatou Diome’s Le ventre de l’Atlantique (2003), this project articulates the ways in which these African writers go beyond portrayals of exploitation and waste by re-imagining polluted landscapes and gesture instead to the continent’s potential for material and cultural renewal.

The north coast of São Paulo, in the end of the XVIII century, has sugar and sugar cane brandy as the main products exported to the Rio de Janeiro and Santos ports through the coast. Coffee shows up in the region right in the first years of the XIX century, becoming in a period of ten years the biggest agricultural product exported by the north Coast villages. The region has suffered with two commercial restrictions from São Paulo´s government that aimed to develop the agriculture in the province,in the end of XVIII and beggining of XIX century, that will point the decay of sugar and sugar cane brandy production. The region economical power is retaken only some years later with the coffee production, which increases the number of free population, the number of slaves, and also, the average number slave owners. The region economic growth is present until the first half of XIX century, getting into a severe economic decline due to the coffee competition of other close regions, which had more production and distribution power. In the beggining of XIX century the region has also been into other commercial activities, such as the whaling and the cutting and selling of timbers of high commercial value used in ship building. The north coast economic decay has only an end with the tourism and a new national economic planning in the beggining of the second half of the XX century.

▼ M.B.A.
Assessment of the service quality in the banking sector is necessary to obtain general performance result for both bankers and customers. Barclays presence in Mauritius dates back to 1919, and since that time the Bank has played a key role in the expansion of business on the island. Barclays currently holds a sixteen percent market share with the two local banks Mauritius Commercial Bank and State Bank Mauritius dominating their presence with a forty percent and thirty percent market share respectively. Barclays Bank Sub Sahara Africa has recently embarked on a major customer service revolution. This study attempted to examine any significant gaps between actual methods used to measure service quality within Barclays Bank Mauritius and empirically tested models in service quality and suggest how service can be better measured at Barclays by measuring service areas where significant gaps are identified between actual methods and empirically tested models. Models have been developed to find measure and assess the determinants of service quality. The works of Parasuraman et al. (1985, 1988, 1991, and 1994) led to the development of a service quality model (SERVQUAL) which is the result of a comparison of the expectations and perceptions of customers regarding a particular service and this model is used in this study. In view of improving customer service, Barclays Bank has been involved in a number of customer service surveys. For the purpose of this study, the researcher has used the results of existing surveys collected from 250 customers of Barclays in Mauritius. In addition, primary data was randomly collected in Mauritius at the main branch which is located in Port-Louis and a sample total sample size of 120 of which 60 were customers and 60 Barclay’s staff. iv Existing surveys shows that service is on the decline within Barclays Banks Mauritius. An overall gap of -1.2, performance (P) is less than expectation (E), showed that customers are dissatisfied with the overall level of service offered by Barclays Bank in Mauritius. An overall service gap of -1.04, performance (P) is less than expectation (E), showed that staff are dissatisfied with the overall level of service offered by Barclays Bank in Mauritius. Four new service dimensions were extracted from the customer data and six new service dimensions from the employee data which confirms that there is significant difference between customer and staff service dimensions at Barclays Bank Mauritius. Both the exiting surveys done by external researchers and the data in this study have the same overall conclusion, that is, service quality at Barclays Bank Mauritius is on the decline. Hence, no significant difference between theory and practice of customer service satisfaction at Barclays Bank Mauritius. A starting point to get service right within an organization has to start with the service providers themselves, all too often organizations steam ahead with service initiatives and campaigns but do not have the support and buy in of their staff. This study…

Integrated geophysical modelling of the northern Cascadia subduction zone.

▼ The northern Cascadia subduction zone involves convergence of the Explorer Plate and northern part of the Juan de Fuca Plate with the North American Plate along a margin lying west of Vancouver Island, Canada. A wide accretionary complex which underlies the continental slope and shelf has been formed. Two allochthonous terranes, the Crescent Terrane of Eocene oceanic crustal volcanics and the Pacific Rim Terrane of Mesozoic melange sedimentary rocks and volcanics, lie against the Wrangellia Terrane backstop beneath the west coast of Vancouver Island and outcrop on the southern tip of the island. The intrusive Coast Plutonic Complex underlies the westernmost part of the British Columbia mainland east of Vancouver Island and marks the location of the historic and modern volcanic arcs.
An integrated interpretation of geophysical and geological data has been conducted for the northern Cascadia subduction zone. Regionally extensive gravity and magnetic anomaly data have formed the basis of the interpretation, while surface geology, physical properties, and seismic reflection, refraction, heat flow, borehole, magnetotelluric, and seismicity data have provided constraints on structure and composition. Horizontal gradient and vertical derivative maps of the potential field data were calculated to provide additional control on the locations of major faults and lithologic boundaries.
Iterative forward modelling of the gravity and magnetic anomaly data was conducted along three offshore multichannel seismic reflection lines and their onshore extensions. The two-and-a-half-dimensional (2.5-D) models extended from the ocean basin across the accretionary
complex and Vancouver Island to the mainland along lines perpendicular to the major structural trends of the margin and revealed lateral changes in the location of several structural components along the length of the margin. The interpretations were extended
laterally by moving the original models to adjacent parallel positions and perturbing them to satisfy the new anomaly profile data and other constraints. The models thus formed were moved to the next position and the process repeated until a total of eleven models was developed
across the margin. A twelfth line across a gravity anomaly high on southern Vancouver Island was independently modelled to examine the source of this feature.
An average density model for the southern half of the convergent margin was constructed by averaging the models and profiles for seven lines at 10 km spacings. This process removed anomalies due to small source bodies and concentrated on the larger features. Finally, a regional density structural model was developed by linearly interpolating between all eleven cross-margin lines to construct a block model which could then be 'sliced' open to examine the internal structure of the margin at any location.
The final models allow the Pacific Rim and Crescent Terrane positions to be extended along the offshore margin from their mapped locations. The Pacific Rim Terrane appears to be continuous…

▼ Tsunamis are water waves generated by a sudden vertical displacement of the water surface. They are waves generated in the ocean by the disturbance associated with seismic activity, under sea volcanic eruptions, submarine landslides, nuclear explosion or meteorite impacts with the ocean. These waves are generated in the ocean and travel into coastal bays, gulfs, estuaries and rivers. These waves travel as gravity waves with a velocity dependent on water depth. The term tsunami is Japanese and means harbour (tsu) and wave (nami). It has been named so because such waves often develop resonant phenomena in harbours after offshore earthquakes.

▼ Future scenarios of global climate change rely on large-scale climate envelope models that do not account for local climatic conditions to which organisms most closely respond. Shifts in species distributions and phenology driven by climate change are well-documented, yet we lack a strong understanding of how climate change will influence the demographic rates of animal populations, which directly determine the likelihood of species persistence. Land cover change, an agent of global change that is increasing in extent and intensity to meet the needs of a growing human population, can combine with climate change to stress animal populations by altering microclimatic conditions, as well as changing the availability of resources such as food and cover from predators. Thus, identifying the individual and combined effects of climate and land management practices is essential to accurately predict the responses of animal populations to global change.
Intensive forest management results in land cover change by suppressing the growth of competing plant species in favor of commercial species and altering the abundance and composition of forest vegetation. In turn, changes in the abundance and composition of forest vegetation can modify local air temperatures. I hypothesized that herbicide application would alter the thermal environment for early-seral forest organisms (Chapter 2). If this were the case, then air temperature could be expected to increase in magnitude and variability along a gradient of herbicide treatment intensity. To test this hypothesis, I used iButton dataloggers to monitor air temperature at 160 nest boxes on 20 intensively managed early-seral forest stands (10.4 - 18.9) in the northern Oregon
Coast Range, USA representing a gradient in intensive forest management (i.e., no-spray control, light, moderate and intensive herbicide application). I also measured the amount and composition of vegetation cover to test for herbicide effects on vegetation among application intensities. Using linear mixed models, I compared three measures of air temperature (mean daily minimum, mean, and maximum) and their associated coefficients of variation (CVs). Additionally, I used linear mixed models to confirm differences in total vegetation and broadleaved vegetation cover. Although mean total vegetation cover generally decreased, it did not significantly differ among herbicide treatments; in contrast, mean broadleaved vegetation cover was significantly reduced in the moderate and intensive treatments. Herbicide treatment was a significant predictor of maximum and mean temperatures, but minimum temperatures did not differ with herbicide treatment. Although there was an effect of herbicide treatment on air temperature, corrected pairwise comparisons indicated no significant differences among treatments. I note that though my power to detect statistical differences among treatments was limited, these differences were quite small (< 0.5°C) and confidence intervals were
generally relatively narrow (< 1.5°C), suggesting that…
