▼ The Australian state of NSW has a history of public health action which predates Federation and continues to this day. In this thesis, I explore three current public health problems in NSW, each of which disproportionately affects a vulnerable sub-population. Three discrete studies are described, and the impact of these studies on public health knowledge, policy and practice in NSW is explored thoroughly. Dental caries is a common childhood health problem in NSW. In the first study, I used qualitative methods to evaluate a novel program established to stabilise existing, and prevent new, caries in children. I sought the views and experiences of program staff and participating parents, and found that both providers and recipients considered that the program components are appropriate, complementary, well delivered and mostly effective. The findings have several implications for oral health promotion practice. Workplace violence is common among health professionals. However, this public health problem has received little research attention in some health care settings. In the second study, I used quantitative methods to scope workplace violence among correctional health and forensic mental health professionals in NSW. The findings show that workplace violence is common in these health workers, although physical abuse is uncommon when compared with health workers practicing in community settings. I make several recommendations for practice in NSW and future research more broadly. Despite being a vaccine preventable infection, pertussis outbreaks occur periodically in NSW. In the third study, I used time series analysis to investigate the potential of real-time monitoring of cough-related emergency department visits among children to provide early warning of pertussis outbreaks. In children, pertussis appears to be an important, but not the sole, driver of cough-related emergency department visits. The findings have implications for future research and the implementation of syndromic surveillance in NSW. The studies included in this thesis have improved our understanding of three contemporary public health problems in NSW. Also, importantly, each applied study has had a tangible impact on the public health landscape in NSW, with findings leading to organisational change in several health services and modifications to a key public health surveillance system. ▼ Background and Objectives Obesity and some dietary related diseases are emerging health problems among Chinese immigrants and their children in developed countries. These health problems are closely linked to eating habits, which are established in the early years of life. Young children’s eating habits are likely to persist into later childhood and youth. Family environment and parental feeding practices have a strong effect on young children’s eating habits. Little information is available on the early feeding practices of Chinese mothers in Australia. The aim of this study was to understand the dietary beliefs, feeding attitudes and practices of Chinese mothers with young children who were recent immigrants to Australia. Methods Using a sequential explanatory design, this mixed methods study consisted of two distinct phases. Phase 1 (quantitative): 254 Chinese immigrant mothers of children aged 12 to 59 months completed a cross-sectional survey. The psychometric properties and factor structure of a Chinese version of the Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ, by Birch et al. 2001) were assessed and used to measure specific maternal feeding attitudes and controlling feeding practices. Other questions were developed from the literature and used to explore maternal traditional dietary beliefs and feeding practices related to their beliefs, perceptions of picky eating in children and a range of socioeconomic and acculturation factors. Phase 2 (qualitative): 21 mothers took part in a follow-up telephone interview to assist in explaining and interpreting some significant findings obtained in the first phase. Results Chinese mothers held strong traditional dietary beliefs and fed their children according to these beliefs. However, children’s consumption of non-core foods was high. Both traditional Chinese and Australian style foods were consumed by their children. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the original 7-factor model of the CFQ provided an acceptable fit to the data with minor modification. However, an alternative model with eight constructs in which two items related to using food rewards were separated from the original restriction construct, not only provided an acceptable fit to the data, but also improved the conceptual clarity of the constructs. The latter model included 24 items loading onto the following eight constructs: restriction, pressure to eat, monitoring, use of food rewards, perceived responsibility, perception of own weight, perception of child’s weight, and concern about child becoming overweight. The internal consistency of the constructs was acceptable or desirable (Cronbach’s α = .60 - .93). Mothers reported low levels of concern about their child overeating or becoming overweight, but high levels of controlling feeding practices: restriction, monitoring, pressure to eat and use of food rewards. Magistrsko delo obravnava realen problem iz Skupine Gorenje, natančneje s področja spremljanja in nadzora razvojnih projektov. Skupino Gorenje tvorijo ob podjetju Gorenje d.d. (Velenje, Slovenija) še tri večja mednarodna podjetja Atag (Nizozemska), Mora Moravia (Češka) in Asko (Švedska). Poleg naštetih pa so v Skupino vključene še številne druge manjše družbe. Trenutno v vseh naštetih podjetjih nimajo enotnega enostranskega modela za spremljanje in nadzor razvojnih projektov za vsa podjetja, v nekaterih takšen model sploh ne obstaja. V prihodnosti nameravajo v podjetju vzpostaviti drugačen organizacijski model, po katerem bo odgovorna oseba iz matičnega podjetja imela možnost neposrednega in bolj učinkovitega spremljanja in nadziranja vseh projektov razvoja izdelkov na ravni Skupine Gorenje v vseh fazah projektov. Iz tega izhaja glavni cilj magistrskega dela, ki je bil, da zasnujemo nov model za spremljanje in nadzor razvojnih projektov, ki bo v prihodnje integriran v vsa podjetja Skupine Gorenje. Pred pričetkom snovanja novega modela smo dobro analizirali obstoječe modele, iz katerih je bilo moč dobiti dosti uporabnih podatkov. Na drugi strani pa je pred začetkom snovanja izrazil svoje želje in zahteve tudi naročnik (izvršni direktor za področje razvoja v Gorenje, d.d.). Med ostalimi zahtevami bi na tem mestu izpostavili to, da je moral biti novi model zasnovan v Microsoft Excelu in imeti možnost integracije na portal Gorenja, ki so ga zasnovali v Microsoft SharePoint. Rezultat magistrskega dela je novi model za spremljanje in nadzor razvojnih projektov, ki je v celoti zasnovan v angleškem jeziku, zaradi mednarodnega delovanja Skupine Gorenje. Posledično je tudi ime modela v angleškem jeziku, in sicer se imenuje Gorenje Group Project Status Report (GGPSR).

This master´s thesis deals with an actual problem of Gorenje Group, focusing on the field of monitoring and controlling of development projects. Besides Gorenje Group headquarters Gorenje, d.d., there are three major international companies, namely Atag (Netherlands), Mora Moravia (Czech Republic) and Asko (Sweden). There are also other smaller companies in Gorenje Group. At the moment the companies mentioned above do not have a unified one-sided model for monitoring and controlling of development projects. In some of these companies such model does not even exist. In the future they want to establish a different organizational model in which the responsible person will be from the parent company and the same person will have the possibility for direct and more effective monitoring and controlling of all product development projects at the level of the Group in all phases of these projects. The problem described has inspired the main goal of the master's thesis, namely to design a new model for monitoring and controlling of development projects. Multi functional health monitoring wearable devices are quite prominent these days. Usually these devices are battery-operated and consequently are limited by their battery life (from few hours to a few weeks depending on the application). Of late, it was realized that these devices, which are currently being operated at fixed voltage and frequency, are capable of operating at multiple voltages and frequencies. By switching these voltages and frequencies to lower values based upon power requirements, these devices can achieve tremendous benefits in the form of energy savings. Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) techniques have proven to be handy in this situation for an efficient trade-off between energy and timely behavior. Within imec, wearable devices make use of the indigenously developed MUSEIC v2 (Multi Sensor Integrated circuit version 2.0). This system is optimized for efficient and accurate collection, processing, and transfer of data from multiple (health) sensors. MUSEIC v2 has limited means in controlling the voltage and frequency dynamically. In this thesis we explore how traditional DVFS techniques can be applied to the MUSEIC v2. Experiments were conducted to find out the optimum power modes to efficiently operate and also to scale up-down the supply voltage and frequency. Considering the overhead caused when switching voltage and frequency, transition analysis was also done. Real-time and non real-time benchmarks were implemented based on these techniques and their performance results were obtained and analyzed. In this process, several state of the art scheduling algorithms and scaling techniques were reviewed in identifying a suitable technique. Using our proposed scaling technique implementation, we have achieved 86.95% power reduction in average, in contrast to the conventional way of the MUSEIC v2 chip’s processor operating at a fixed voltage and frequency. Techniques that include light sleep and deep sleep mode were also studied and implemented, which tested the system’s capability in accommodating Dynamic Power Management (DPM) techniques that can achieve greater benefits. A novel approach for implementing the deep sleep mechanism was also proposed and found that it can obtain up to 71.54% power savings, when compared to a traditional way of executing deep sleep mode.
