▼ Past research has shown that jurors tend to make more severe culpability judgments when defendants are charged with crimes that are associated with their racial group (e.g., Jones & Kaplan, 2013). Although the Story Model (e.g., Pennington & Hastie, 1988) has received much empirical support and currently is the most prominent model in the juror decision making literature, it has not been applied to cases where racially stereotypical crimes might bias verdict decisions. The present research investigated whether the narrative believability of the stories that are suggested at trial, especially story coherence, would explain the effect of race-crime congruence on verdict decisions. Specifically, I attempted to answer the question of whether race-crime congruence affects biased verdict judgments because it leads to an increase in the coherence of the stories jurors form from the evidence. In addition, my goal was to assess whether motivation to control prejudice and stereotype suppression instructions serve as two potential moderating variables. In Study 1 I developed a scale that fully captures the certainty principles affecting acceptance of and confidence in a story (i.e., interpretation of the evidence leading to trial) in the specific context of juror decision making. Specifically, I examined the factor structure underlying a modified version of Yale's (2013) Narrative Believability Scale-12. Study 2 investigated whether the coherence of the prosecution story (and/or the defense story) mediates the relationship between race-crime congruence and verdict judgments in a diverse online sample. In addition, I planned to assess whether high levels of motivation to control prejudice and the presence of stereotype suppression instructions independently reduce this effect. Moreover, with study 3, I attempted to replicate the results in study 2 with a student sample in the laboratory, using the stories that were actually created by the mock jurors as the mediating mechanisms. Based on the findings of Study 2 and Study 3, an additional study was conducted to investigate whether those null effects that emerged in the other studies were due to order effects. No race-crime congruence effects emerged. Findings and implications were discussed.

▼ Wind farms are one of the main means for sustainable energy supply in the Netherlands. In the period of 2013-2020 provincial governments were tasked with siting a certain number of megawatts of wind energy on their territory. This led to the development of wind farms in many Dutch municipalities, of which the decision-making process has in many cases recently finished. In this process, citizen participation played a large role. This thesis research provides an exploratory study on the influence of this practice, using the following research question: How does the current practice of citizen participation influence the decision-making process of wind farms in the Netherlands? To answer this question, three cases have been selected of wind farms where the decision-making process was recently completed: Weijerswold in Coevorden, Spui in Hoeksche Waard and Nij Hiddum-Houw in Súdwest-Fryslân. These cases are chosen as they are very diverse regarding the type of initiator, the citizens involvement and the role of the municipality. Literature and policy documents are studied, and interviews are held with policy-makers, wind farm developers, citizens and experts. For each case, the main groups of actors that most highly influence the decision-making process are described: provincial and municipal government, initiators of wind energy and participating and activist citizens. The division of citizens into these two groups is somewhat artificial, as in reality these groups are not so strictly distinct. It also is noted that citizens participating and representing other citizens can be difficult, as in every case there are also citizens who fiercely object to the entire participation process. All three cases are analysed and evaluated using the Rounds model of G.R. Teisman (2000). In this model, the activities of the different actors are described in different ‘rounds of decision-making’. It focusses on the interaction between actors, who can make decisions in varying combinations. This thesis includes case-specific graphical representations of the Rounds model. This has not been done before by other authors who applied this model, even though it is very suitable and adds clarity to the description in text: broad outlines are easier to visualise and cross-case analysis is simplified. The cases are also classified on Arnstein’s ladder of citizen participation, the most used academic reference for classification by influence. On this ladder, the current practice of citizen participation can best be described as placation or partnership, depending on the specific case. It is hereby noted that this influence is not the only valid measurement by which to assess a citizen participation process. Furthermore, six factors of influence are determined, which each have their own influence on the decision-making process. Decision-making is an integral part of everyday life for animals of all species. Some decisions are rapid and based on sensory input alone, others rely on factors such as context and internal motivation. The possibilities for the experimental investigation of choice behaviour in mammals, especially in humans, are seemingly endless. However, neuroscience has struggled to define the neural circuitry behind decision-making processes due to the complex structure of the mammalian brain.

For this work we turn to the honeybee for inspiration. With a brain composed of approximately 10 to the power of 6 neurons and sized at a tiny 1mm to the power of 3, it may be assumed that such an insect produces mere `programmed' behaviours, yet, the honeybee exhibits a rich, elaborate behavioural repertoire and a large capacity for learning in a variety of different paradigms. Indeed, the honeybee has been identified as a powerful model for decision-making.

Sequential sampling models, originating in psychology, have been used to explain rapid decision-making behaviours. Such models assume that noisy sensory evidence is integrated over time until a threshold is reached, whereby a decision is made. These models have proven popular because they are able to fit biological data and are furthermore supported by neural evidence. Additionally, they explain the speed-accuracy trade-off, a behavioural phenomenon also demonstrated in bees.

For this work we examine honeybee choice behaviour in different levels of satiation, and show that hungry bees are faster and less accurate than partially satiated bees in a simple choice task. We suggest that differences in choice behaviour may be attributed to a simple mechanism which alters the level of the decision threshold according to how satiated the bee is. We further speculate that the honeybee olfactory system may be a drift-diffusion channel, and develop a simple computational model, based on honeybee neurobiology ,with simulations that match behavioural results.

Optimalen nakup brez sistematične in poglobljene raziskave trga ni več možen. V podjetjih se kaže potreba po poglobljenih odnosih z dobavitelji. Vključevanje v zgodnjo fazo razvoja podjetju prihrani čas in denar. Proces izbire dobavitelja iz vseh teh razlogov postaja strateško pomembna odločitev vsakega podjetja. V magistrskem delu je s pomočjo večparametrskega modela za podporo odločanju zgrajen model, ki pomaga pri izbiri dobavitelja repromaterialov v proizvodnem podjetju. Model je prenosljiv med proizvodnimi podjetji. Zgrajen je na podlagi parametrov, razvrščenih v hierarhično drevo. Izbira dobavitelja je podprta z lupino ekspertnega sistema DEX-i. Sistem omogoča izgradnjo baze znanja, ocenjevanje variant in razlago rezultatov. Pri razlagi rezultatov je v pomoč tudi VREDANA, ki nadomesti nekatere pomanjkljivosti DEX-a in daje boljšo podporo »kaj-če« analizam.

It has become impossible to make an optimum purchase without a systematic and detailed research of the market. Companies are faced with the need for more elaborate relationships with their suppliers. Getting involved in the early phase of developing an intermediate good is both time- and cost-effective for the final product manufacturer. For all those reasons, the supplier selection process, increasingly, is a strategically important decision for each company. The master's thesis employs a multi-attribute decision-support model to establish a model helping a manufacturer in selecting the supplier of an intermediate good. The model is transferable among companies. It is based on attributes arranged in a hierarchical tree. The supplier selection is supported by a DEXi expert system shell. The system enables the compilation of a knowledge base, assessment of variants, and interpretation of results. In interpreting the results, another programme used is VREDANA, making up for certain deficiencies of the DEX as well as providing better support to “what-if” analyses.

Vsak dan v življenju se srečujemo z odločitvami, ki so lahko za nas prijazne, lahko pa so te odločitve težke in neprijetne. V osebnem življenju se lahko odločamo tako, kot nam narekujejo naše misli in naše srce, v delovnem okolju pa takšne odločitve niso zaželene, saj so lahko preveč subjektivne in ni nujno, da bi bile všeč vsem zaposlenim v organizaciji. S takšnimi težavami se srečamo na primer, ko je potrebno zaposliti novega zaposlenega ali pa odpustiti nekoga izmed obstoječega kadra. Prav tako se nam težava lahko pojavi, ko je potrebno oceniti delovno uspešnost zaposlenih. V kolikor organizacija nima postavljenih nikakršnih meril, po katerih bi se zaposlene ocenjevalo, lahko pride do velikega problema, predvsem v primerih, kjer ena oseba ocenjuje vse zaposlene. Subjektivne odločitve lahko mnogokrat pripeljejo do nepotrebnih sporov, zato je potrebno najti način, kako bi se tovrstnim težavam lahko izognili. Na Agenciji za pošto in elektronske komunikacije Republike Slovenije, kjer sem zaposlena, imamo sicer jasno postavljene kriterije, po katerih se zaposlene ocenjuje, saj upoštevamo predpisana pravila za javno upravo, vendar bi vsekakor prišla prav informacijska podpora. V magistrskem delu je s pomočjo informacijske tehnologije izdelan in predstavljen odločitveni model za oceno delovne uspešnosti zaposlenih. Povezan je z rezultati ocene zadovoljstva pri delu v naši organizaciji, ki so bili pridobljeni leta 2006 na pobudo organizacije, ter ponovno leta 2008 za potrebe diplomskega dela z naslovom Organizacijsko vzdušje na Agenciji za pošto in elektronske komunikacije Republike Slovenije, katerega avtor sem. Takšen model ni primeren le za našo organizacijo, pač pa bi bil lahko uporaben tudi za druge organizacije.

Every day we are faced with decisions that can be either pleasant or hard and uncomfortable. While in our personal lives decisions are made by following our minds and our hearts, in a work environment this cannot be, as such decisions can often be too subjective and not necessarily appreciated by all employees of an organisation. We are faced with such difficulties when, for example, hiring a new employee or terminating the employment of one of the existing employees. The same issue can arise also when grading the work performance of employees. Substantial problems may appear when an organisation has in place no rules of grading employees, especially in cases when one person is to grade all employees. As subjective decisions can often lead to unnecessary conflict, a way of avoiding such problems must be identified. While at the Post and Electronic Communications Agency of the Republic of Slovenia where I am employed a set of clear criteria for grading employees is in place pursuant to the rules governing the public administration, information technology support would nevertheless be very helpful. ▼ Complex engineered systems rely heavily on simulation models for design. Designing such systems typically involves a sequential decision process that increases the modeling and engineering analysis detail while simultaneously decreasing the space of alternatives considered. This space of alternatives is called the tradespace, and in a decision theoretic framework, low-fidelity models help decision-makers identify regions of interest in the tradespace and cull others prior to constructing more computationally-expensive higher fidelity models to further discriminate alternatives in support of a model-based systems engineering process. Previous work has shown that multi-fidelity modeling can aid in rapid optimization of the design space when higher fidelity models \emph{are coupled with} lower fidelity models, i.e., it is assumed that both models are available, and the two are used as a computational ``trick'' to speedup optimization routines. This dissertation introduces and motivates the sequential process of design through a formal model. The formal model seeks to answer (1) what structure models of varying fidelities should have relative to one another, (2) a linkage between decisions made from each modeling effort, and (3) a method for selecting a sequence of computational models and analyses when considering design as a \emph{sequential decision process}. The method presented herein demonstrates design as a sequence of finite decision epochs through a tradespace defined by the extent of the set of designs under consideration, modeling characteristics, and the level of analytic fidelity subjected to each design. This work introduces a method for constructing cost-optimal sequences of models of increasing fidelity by reducing the design set size under the guarantee that the optimal solution remains in the consideration set at each epoch. A summary of relevant literature in design sciences, social sciences, and engineering optimization communities is given to scope the research. The formal model is presented with its assumptions, definitions, and applications as well as a method for applying the model to an engineering system. The method is applied to several examples including 1D and 2D finite element analysis and a bi-level optimization problem with a combinatorial kernel based on a 2D bin packing problem. It is demonstrated that by treating design as a sequential decision process, significant savings (e.g., time, money) can be obtained. ▼ With the increase in the number and diversity of attacks, a main concern for organizations is to keep their network and systems secure. Existing frameworks to manage Information Technology (IT) security include empirical evaluations, security risk assessments, cost-benefit analyses, and adversary-based evaluations. These techniques are often not easy to apply and their results are usually difficult to convey. This dissertation presents a model to help reasoning about security and to support communication between IT security experts and managers. The model identifies major components of security: threat, user, organization, asset, and emphasizes the human element. Characteristics for each component are determined and cover the attacker's motivations, the user's risk perception, the IT security team expertise, and the depth of protection of the asset. These characteristics are linked through causal influences that can represent positive or negative relationships and be leveraged to rank alternatives through a set of weights. The described formalism allows IT security officers to brainstorm about IT security issues, to evaluate the impacts of alternative solutions on characteristics of security, and ultimately on the level of security, and to communicate their findings to managers. The contributions of this dissertation are three-fold. First, we introduce an approach to develop and validate a model for IT security decision making, given known issues related to this task: difficulties in sharing security data, lack of accepted security metrics, limitation in available information and use of experts. We propose a development and validation process that relies on two sources of information: experts and data. Second, we provide the results of the model development for academic environments. The resulting model is based on extended discussions with the Director of Security at the University of Maryland (UMD), two interviewed experts, fifteen surveyed experts, and empirical data collected at UMD. Finally, we demonstrate the use of the model to justify IT security decisions and present methodological steps towards measuring various characteristics of the model. Traditionally, in all manufacturing industries, the functions of marketing, distribution, planning, manufacturing, and purchasing operate independently. These functions have their own objectives. Many manufacturing operations are designed to maximize throughput and to minimise costs with a little consideration for the impact on inventory levels and distribution capabilities. Presently, the purchasing contracts are often negotiated with minimum information beyond the historical purchasing patterns of the customer. This research, first takes up the application of Analytic Network Process (ANP) model in the supplier selection process (Saaty 1980). It is generally agreed that taking an unbiased decision is the prime objective which is very hard to reach. In the model, proposed in this research, twelve potential evaluation criteria viz. Quality, Quantity, Delivery time, Demand, Cost, Discount, Sales after service, Communication system, Technical Capability, Production facilities, Geographical location and Professionalism of Sales person are considered to select important criteria. In this model, AHP was applied for four products namely Back plate, Wheel Cylinder, Lining Shoe and Auto Adjuster for back wheel assembly by five automotive ancillary suppliers (Supplier A, Supplier B, Supplier C, Supplier D and Supplier E) to a leading industry which manufactures brake systems for automobiles at India. The best supplier was identified from the overall priority vectors obtained using AHP. The application of the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) is used to check the suitability of the selected supplier which is obtained as the result of AHP. Also results were obtained using MAT LAB. Quality, Quantity, Delivery time, Demand, and Cost were the five criteria which were considered. The result of fuzzy logic shows that the selected supplier as the result of AHP is acceptable. Finally sensitivity analysis was made and based on the priority vectors it was found that the AHP model for selecting the best supplier was stable. newline newline newline

▼ This thesis investigated eye movements (i.e. number of fixations, fixation duration) during learning in uncertain situations, i.e. when interacting with a technical system like a ticket machine and users are not aware of the functioning. It was predicted that eye movements allow insights into the process of developing a mental representation under uncertainty. In order to induce uncertainty, a visual spatial search task with likely and unlikely target locations was developed. Participants were asked to predict the appearance of stimuli at target locations as accurately as possible by learning the underlying probability concept. In quick succession, they were asked to react as quickly as possible on changes of the stimuli. In total, five eye tracking experiments were gradually developed and conducted. In a first experiment, participants performed the newly developed visual spatial search task und learned the underlying probability concept of likely and unlikely target locations accurately. Eye movements became more focused, i.e. number of fixations as well as fixation duration decreased significantly over the time course of the task with increasing learning and reduced uncertainty. The aim of the second experiment was to assess to what extent search difficulty affects the development of the mental representation. Therefore, target objects were presented at an unstructured white-gray patterned background. Results showed an overall higher number of fixations than in the first experiment, however, participants also developed an accurate mental representation of the probability concept. A third experiment was designed as a relearning experiment to study the effect of initial knowledge on the development of mental representations and thus on eye movements. Participants initially learned a probability concept and in a second phase learned a different concept of target-location associations. Thereby, eye movements indicated different phases of relearning. In a fourth experiment the prediction and the reaction task were assessed separately to elucidate which dominated the development of mental representation. Results indicated that the developed mental representation of the visual spatial search task was mainly based on the prediction of the target stimuli and not on the reaction on changes of the target stimuli. In a last experiment, the manipulation of the degree of objective uncertainty by varying the probabilities of the probability concept did not lead to different eye movements. It seemed that the degree of subjective uncertainty was not affected by varying the probabilities. In conclusion, the results of the thesis demonstrated that eye movements actually gave insights into the development of mental representations under uncertainty. Eye movements informed about the learning stage, viz. the accumulation of information, independent of the content as well as the subjective uncertainty of the participants, viz. the usage of decision strategies and strategies to cope with uncertainty. Site selection is a critical factor in the ability to provide safe and healthy environment for refugees. At the outset of an emergency, limited resource and time create large planning uncertainties and current refugee sites’ assessments based on field visit are no longer adequate. The selection of unsuitable locations triggers a number of issues such as environmental degradation, competition for scarce resources and, exploitation of water sources. These can be reduced through a rational refugee allocation decision process. The question that arises is, can the refugee allocation process be supported by a structured decision-making (SDM) approach and more specifically, by a portfolio decision analysis (PDA) model? Focusing on water security criteria, this study presents the initial phases of the SDM-approach intended to ensure a more sustainable allocation of newly-arrived refugees among new and/or existing hosing sites. To this end, a procedural tool for supporting WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) officers in the site assessment is proposed. This was obtained based on 15 semi-structured interviews and questionnaires carried out in a global stakeholder environment, in order to make the SDM framework applicable to other settings. The generic procedural tool was tested in a case-study in south-western Uganda by applying a portfolio decision analysis model. Local and global data were combined with stakeholder preferences to predict the performance of diverse sets of alternatives. The latter were generated according to different combinations of numbers of refugees, hosting locations and percentage of water extracted from surface water, groundwater and rain water. To identify efficient portfolios, we used the Robust Portfolio Modelling - Decisions software. Results showed that overlooked solutions outperforms over the current allocation strategy. In specific, the scatter of newly arrived refugees showed the highest scores on availability of water, socio-economic costs and host communities' advantages. The proposed framework provides also options for the optimal repartition of the future water extraction among available water sources, aiming to avoid their depletion while preserving sustainable costs of the water services.

As schools are considered by some experts to be the best place to develop the skills required for democratic participation it made me question the reality of making such a claim. Overwhelmingly, schools continue to function under endowed, autocratic leadership where there is little opportunity for democratic participation.In undertaking my research I took on the role of co-participant in two primary schools to explore the question: What happens when teachers are given greater opportunities to deliberate and make decisions about the work they do? How and why it happened became the focus of an auto-ethnographic study with co-participants from the two schools over a period of two and a half years (2008-2010). As the researcher, I coached, mentored and guided individual teachers, principals, teams of teachers and leadership teams through a restructuring and reculturing process that began with the introduction of a new governance model, sociocracy, where decisions are made by the socios, people in close social proximity to one another, rather than the demos, the general populace. The complex and emerging nature of this research determined that I use a multi paradigmatic design, as espoused by Guba (1990), in order to respond to the turbulent nature of the research field. My design allowed me to continually shift focus to reveal multiple perspectives, my own and “Other”, as I mined the rich underlay of data that emerged out of my interactions in each school. The quality standards used to measure the worth of this project are aligned to the methodologies chosen; they shift throughout the project as I consciously choose the best way to reveal the knowledge gained from my interactions in the field. I have interwoven theory, practice and multiple voices throughout the text as a way of balancing the reported disconnect that teachers feel between policy and practice.The outcome of this research is a holistic, scalable organisational framework for schools to use as a way of creating resilient learning organisations that adapt and improve in a constant state of be(com)ing.

▼ Ranking can be defined in many ways and has been applied in many areas. Over the past years, many research studies have been conducted on ranking methods for decision-making. The issue is that results pertaining to ranking entities are based only on one method, which can be subjective and prone to biases. As a result, results vary from method to method. To resolve this issue, a combined model approach is proposed, in which multiple methods are taken into account. The goals of the combined model are to rank entities more objectively and obtain more reliable results. The combined model has both qualitative and quantitative elements, where the qualitative element is the ranking and clustering, while the quantitative element is comprised of the scores. Since ranking is based on the scores of the entities, it takes into account the distribution of scores. In some scenarios, closely ranked entities can have similar scores, while in other scenarios, their scores can be relatively different even though they are ranked close to one another. The score distribution leads to clustering analysis, where entities are divided into clusters based on the spread of the scores. Hence, the combined model takes into account not only the ranks but also the scores of the entities. The proposed combined model is applied to three areas for this dissertation research. The first is identifying and ranking road hotspots and predicting the number of traffic crashes in road segments using the Empirical Bayesian (EB) enhanced by the Proportion Discordance Ratio (PDR) metric. The effectiveness of the Enhanced EB method is tested and demonstrated through a case study that is conducted in one of the major highways in Phoenix, Arizona. The second is ranking major US metropolitan areas in traffic congestion using unsupervised learning based on the Normalized Scoring Method (NSM), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and the PDR similarity matrix. In 2015, TomTom ranked Tucson as the 21st most congested metropolitan area in the US, and the unsupervised learning combined model is applied to assess TomTom’s traffic congestion ranking of the metropolitan areas in order to determine if Tucson is highly congested based on the proposed model. The third is ranking and assessing the Hall of Fame (HOF) worthiness of retired Major League Baseball players based on their performance statistics through supervised learning based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Neural Networks (NN). Players are considered for the HOF through a voting procedure, where voters are comprised of members of the media, but there is a possibility of voting bias that can favor or go against certain players. Results from all three scenarios show that the proposed combined models are more reliable and can more objectively rank entities in order to correct biases based on previous methodologies. ▼ Migrants are moving in great numbers towards urban areas as a result of urbanization and drivers such as political-, economical- and climate crises. The influx of new people brings new challenges for cities and municipalities to provide for a suitable environment for new and existing citizens whilst preventing adverse effects to occur. Current literature describes the dynamics of the city using effects such as segregation, gentrification and urban decay. However, the changing character of urban areas is not linked with the decision-making behavior of citizens in current literature. Furthermore, the dynamics of urban areas are rarely observed from a meso-scale perspective. This research aims to describe the relation between migration patterns and changes to the fabric of the city. A conceptual model on the dynamics involved in observing decision-making of citizens and observing changes to the city fabric is made. Using real-world data of the city of The Hague in The Netherlands, a Data-Driven Agent-Based model is made in Netlogo. Data analysis on the outcomes of the model using Python provide a better understanding of the impact of migration on the changes to the city fabric. The model output describes the impact on the city caused by the influx of migrants. More migrants entering the city can drastically increase homelessness or the "pushing out" of citizen groups because of housing shortages. This is most prevalent for the poorest citizens, since social rent housing is first to become scarce when more people enter the city. An increase in income inequality or a decrease in average migrant income results in even more pronounced housing shortages. The model simulates 6 policy interventions for the municipality of The Hague. The model shows that all policies that increase housing options significantly increases well-being of citizens. However, the policies that try to improve safety and health do not show an increase in well-being of citizens. By means of historical validation the model is tested for validity. The model is able to describe much of the decision-making behavior of migrants and citizens. However, for certain ethnicities, the model is currently unable to describe the decision-making process in such a way that it can represent the observed real-world moving patterns. A framework has been presented that can be used to better explain the impact of migration on cities. Furthermore, the conceptual model can be applied to different aspects of city dynamics, for instance the transport or energy sector. The ABM shows that current housing options and expected influx of migrants become problematic within the coming 10 years. An indication of the usefulness of proposed policy interventions is presented. More research and surveys are needed to better understand these mechanics and their relation to changes to the fabric of the city. For instance, when the markets are plunging, investors tend to sell stocks instead of purchasing them with lower prices because people in general are more sensitive to the potential losses than the potential gains, or loss averse, in making financial choices. This also can be seen in laboratory tests. When participants receive higher payoffs for successfully discriminating a visual stimulus as one choice against the other, they begin choosing this higher-rewarded option more often even though the objective evidence indicates the alternative. In my dissertation, I used mathematical models and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to track the development of bias in perceptual and financial decision-making and presented evidence characterizing the experience-sensitive and domain-general decision-making process in the human brains. The first chapter showed that bias could be developed through associating decision contexts and reward feedback from trial to trial in perceptual decision-making. Although the surface task differed, this learning process involved the same prediction error driven mechanisms implemented in the dopaminergic system as in financial decision-making. Furthermore, the frontal cortex increased its strength of connection between visual and value systems that accounted for the growth of perceptual bias. The second chapter extended this feedback-driven acquisition process to examine the influences of experience on loss aversion in financial decision-making. The results showed that people learned to make riskier or more conservative decisions according to the feedback that they had received in different decision contexts. This alternation in loss aversion was achieved through modulation of the value system’s sensitivity toward the potential gains in evaluation. The frontal cortex mediated this change. The third chapter used a mathematical model to identify the changes in financial decision-making that occurred faster than the temporal resolution of fMRI. The results suggested that people might simplify financial information into some rules of thumb for making a choice. These findings not only integrated the knowledge in different domains of decision neuroscience but also shed lights onto how one may refine the decision-making process against experiences. These codes, while extensive, do not encompass all situations. When professionals find themselves in an ambiguous situation, it is called an ethical dilemma. Many of the professional organizations that create ethical codes also recommend the use of ethical decision-making models. Ethical decision-making models provide steps, or instructions, on how to make an ethical decision when presented with an ethical dilemma. Little research has been done on ethical decision-making models, so it cannot be concluded that these models actually help make more ethical decisions. The current study compared ethical decision quality among school psychologists and school psychology graduate students who were given a common ethical dilemma to resolve. The experimental group was provided with a high quality and unfamiliar ethical decision-making model, while the control group was not provided this model. Participants provided their decisions, which were compared to a pre-written list of all possible solutions and a rating for how ethical they were. Evidence was found to support the idea that having an ethical decision-making model available results in higher quality ethical decisions. School psychology graduate students and school psychology practitioners were compared to see if one was helped more by having an ethical decision-making model available. Although not statistically significant, analyses suggest that school psychology practitioners may benefit more from having a model available. Furthermore, those who had prior explicit training on using an ethical decision-making model had higher quality ethical decisions. These results speak to the importance of having an ethical decision-making model available when faced with an ethical dilemma, as well as graduate and continuing education providing explicit instruction on ethical decision-making model use.
