▼ Natural systems can be altered, over a wide range of time scales, through changes in environmental conditions. In the Mississippi Delta, which has been shaped by changes in sediment deposition and sea level at the land-ocean interface over the Holocene, changes to environmental conditions lead to state changes that can be observed in both modern ecosystems and the depositional record. Alluvial strata (which comprise the bulk of the world’s sedimentary record) can provide insight into past triggers for ecosystem state changes and can be compared to modern monitoring data to paint a fuller picture of system response to environmental change. Given the large potential impact of anthropogenic climate change on natural systems, this combination of modern and paleo-environmental information may improve our ability to predict future conditions. This dissertation explores coastal and delta plain ecosystem responses to environmental change, particularly relative sea-level rise over annual to millennial timescales (Chapters 2 and 3) and rates of carbon storage by organic and clastic deposits in the Mississippi Delta (Chapter 4). Chapter 2 describes the results of an analysis of how subsidence and relative sea-level rise affect modern wetlands in coastal Louisiana. Using 274 rod surface-elevation table – marker horizon records, GPS measurements, and satellite altimetry data from the Gulf of Mexico, this chapter assesses present-day wetland vulnerability given current environmental conditions. Chapter 3 describes an analysis of how changes in past environmental conditions, specifically variable rates of relative sea-level rise, impacted marshes in the Mississippi Delta throughout the Holocene. Using 355 sediment cores, this chapter identifies relative sea-level rise tipping points that lead to marsh collapse and a state shift from marsh to open water. Using 14C dating, foraminiferal assemblage analysis, and stable isotope geochemistry, this chapter also estimates the time necessary for reestablishment of terrestrial conditions after an initial marsh collapse and conversion to open water at one selected location. Together, these results provide a framework for projecting likely marsh response to future increased rates of relative sea-level rise in coastal Louisiana. The combination of these studies provides a more complete picture of modern and future wetland vulnerability in coastal Louisiana and provides unique insights into the limitations of short-term observational studies of marsh conditions for projecting long-term outcomes in response to environmental change. Chapter 4 describes the results of a comparative analysis of carbon storage rates in organic and clastic deposits within the Holocene sedimentary record near Bayou Lafourche in the Mississippi Delta. Using 14C and OSL dating, elemental analysis, and bulk density measurements collected from three sediment cores, this chapter calculates carbon storage rates to determine the relative carbon storage efficiency of these deposits. ▼ The continuous decline of groundwater levels caused by variations in climatic conditions and crop water demands is an increased concern for the agricultural community. It is necessary to understand the factors that control these changes in groundwater levels so that we can better address declines and develop improved conservation practices that will lead to a more sustainable use of water. In this study, two machine learning techniques namely support vector regression (SVR) and the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) neural network were implemented to predict daily groundwater levels in a well located in the Mississippi Delta Region (MDR). Results of the NARX model indicate that a Bayesian regularization algorithm with two hidden nodes and 100 time delays was the best architecture to forecast groundwater levels. In another study, the SVR and the NARX model were compared for the prediction of groundwater withdrawal and recharge periods separately. Results from this study showed that input data classified by seasons lead to incremental improvements in the model accuracy, and that the SVR was the most efficient machine learning model with a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.00123 m for the withdrawal season. Analysis of input variables such as previous daily groundwater levels (Gw), precipitation (Pr), and evapotranspiration (ET) showed that the combination of Gw+Pr provides the optimal set for groundwater prediction and that ET degraded the modeling performance, especially during recharge seasons. Finally, the CROPGRO-Soybean crop model was used to simulate the impacts of different volumes of irrigation on the crop height and yield, and to generate the daily irrigation requirements for soybean crops in the MDR. Four irrigation threshold scenarios (20%, 40%, 50% and 60%) were obtained from the CROGRO-Soybean model and used as inputs in the SVR to evaluate the predicted response of daily groundwater levels to different irrigation demands. This study demonstrated that conservative irrigation management, by selecting a low irrigation threshold, can provide good yields comparable to what is produced by a high volume irrigation management practice. Thus, lower irrigation volumes can have a big impact on decreasing the amount of groundwater withdrawals, while still maintaining comparable yields. Advisors/Committee Members: Mary Love M. ▼ Long-term groundwater level and stream stage measurements at a USGS coupled groundwater stream-gaging station located on the Sunflower River in Sunflower, MS show an apparent stage-threshold for infiltration to the underlying alluvial aquifer. This site is located near the center of a large regional groundwater cone of depression in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. The USGS well (termed well 3 in this study) was thought to be completed in the regional shallow aquifer, though often recording anomalously high water levels relative to other wells in the region. The purpose of this research was to identify the responsible mechanism for the apparent stage-threshold for surface-groundwater communication. Two possible mechanisms were considered: (1) scour of infiltration-limiting fine-grained bottom sediments during high flow-rate events corresponding to higher stage, (2) and lateral infiltration at high stage into more permeable coarse grained sedimentary layers intersecting the stream channel at higher elevation. A channel bed sediment survey was conducted over 100 km of the river at high stream stage. The stream bottom was composed of cohesive, fine-grained sediments, eliminating the first hypothesis as a viable mechanism. Entrainment of bottom sediments at the higher velocities did not expose coarser-grained, higher-conductivity bottom sediments. Cores were taken throughout the west bank of the river near the USGS well (well 3) along vertical and horizontal transects to measure variations in grain size. A more coarse grained layer (higher sand content) was identified at an elevation of 29.2-31.6 m (msl), consistent with the second hypothesis. Two additional monitoring wells (wells 1 and 2) were installed 1 km upstream, 12 m deeper than well 3. Water levels from these wells were generally 7 m lower than in well 3, were more consistent with regional groundwater levels, and showed no response to short-term changes in stream stage. Well 3 appears to be screened within a perched aquifer which is in connection with the Sunflower River at high stream stage through coarse-grained layers intersecting the stream channel at the higher elevations. The two deeper monitoring wells are screened within the regional aquifer, with river-recharge limited to gradual drainage from the perched aquifer. The results have important implications for groundwater assessment and management for the Delta region of Mississippi, especially concerning the role that streams play as potential sources or sinks for the Mississippi Valley Alluvial Aquifer. ▼ The Delta Regional Authority (Delta Region) is a federal-state partnership aiming to improve socioeconomic conditions in 252 counties and parishes in the eight state Lower Mississippi Delta Region (LMDR). The Delta Region has a higher proportion of black residents, is poorer, and is more rural than the country as a whole. It also has far higher breast cancer mortality rates than the nation. Black women in the Region have higher breast cancer mortality rates than white women in the Delta Region and have higher breast cancer mortality rates than black women in other parts of the country. More aggressive breast cancer subtypes, more advanced stage at diagnosis, and less access to screening mammography may play a role in these high mortality rates. Studies have shown that black women have higher rates of the most aggressive breast cancer subtype – triple-negative – than white women and are often diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Additionally, while poor and rural women tend to have lower incidence rates of breast cancer, they often have a higher odds of late-stage cancer and less access to screening services. This dissertation sought to elucidate the Delta Region’s breast cancer mortality disparity by determining differences between the Delta and non-Delta Regions of the LMDR and by exploring racial differences within the Delta Region among the following areas: breast cancer subtype, breast cancer staging, and spatial access to mammography services. Population-based cancer surveillance data from the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries were analyzed to determine age-adjusted, subtype-specific incidence rates and rate ratios in the Delta and non-Delta Regions of the LMDR. Multilevel negative binomial regression models were constructed to evaluate if identified disparities were attenuated after accounting for race/ethnicity, age, and contextual factors. These analyses were performed for all cases by subtype and separately for early stage and late stage cancers by subtype. Higher rates of triple-negative breast cancer were identified in the Delta Region compared to the non-Delta Region, but this was attenuated in multivariable models. However, triple-negative breast cancer rates were higher in the urban Delta compared to the urban non-Delta, even after accounting for race/ethnicity, age, and contextual factors. Black residents in the Delta Region had higher rates of hormone receptor-negative breast cancers and higher rates of breast cancer overall compared to white women in the Region. Further, there were no particularly notable differences in late-stage breast cancers between the Delta and non-Delta Regions. However, black women in the Delta Region had lower rates of early-stage breast cancer, but higher rates of late-stage breast cancers compared to white, Delta Region women, even after accounting for age and contextual factors. ▼ Having constructed a plantation economy in the Yazoo Mississippi Delta, white Delta planters struggled to retain control of African-American labor after the start of the Civil War. In their effort, the planters manipulated the Freedmen's Bureau; passed the Black Code; sought out foreign labor; and condoned extralegal intimidation. The Civil War disrupted the plantation economy of the Yazoo Delta, prompting the planters to pursue innovative means to preserve the status quo. To achieve this end, they fought with the Confederate government for control of the militia, attempting to stabilize an economy rocked by military incursions, deserters, and outbreaks of lawlessness. Emancipation, the ultimate disruption to the plantation, precipitated a struggle between these former masters and African-Americans seeking to find the meaning of their freedom. The United States government also attempted to restructure the plantation economy of the Delta after the Civil War, but planters often manipulated federal authority to their advantage. Charged with protecting the interests of the freedmen, the Freedmen's Bureau, for example, frequently accommodated the labor needs of Delta planters, even transporting labor to the plantations when necessary. Similarly, Union military commanders frequently supported the planters in their attempt to control black labor. Delta planters, however, wished themselves entirely free of outside governance. Thus, in 1865, they helped formulate the Black Code, seeking to limit the labor options of the freedmen. When Congress negated this code, the planters sought foreign laborers to force African-Americans into economic desperation. Under congressional patronage, moderate Republicans, led by Delta planter James L. Alcorn, attempted to build a party led by white men and supported by African-American votes. When this moderate "Alcorn Republican" system failed in 1873, the planters aligned themselves with the "straight out" Democratic party, rather than support the pro-black Republicans led by Adelbert Ames. Using a system of fraud and brute violence, the white planters ultimately seized power from the Republican party in 1875. This "Mississippi Plan" allowed the planters to remove labor from politics, free the state from authority inimical to their interests, and ensure continuation of the plantation economy. ▼ Mass wasting events are an important geomorphic control on the Mississippi River Delta Front. Short multicores (<50cm) and longer gravity cores (<3m) were collected seaward of the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River Delta and were analyzed to assess the frequency, extent, and potential causes of submarine mass wasting events. Cores were analyzed for radionuclide activity, grain size, and density at 2cm resolution. Short-term sedimentation rates calculated from 7-Be are 2-16cm/y, while longer-term accumulation from 210-Pb are only 1.3-7.3 cm/y. In most cores, 210-Pb activity steadily decreases downcore without displaying a “stairstep” nature. However, seven cores have layers of low 210-Pb activity stratigraphically above layers with higher activity. In a gravity core from a mudflow gully, 210-Pb steadily decreases for the upper 70 cm before stabilizing for the remaining 150 cm. Clay content generally ranges between 25-40% and sand ranges between 5-15% with silt making up the rest of each sample. Sediment accumulation rates derived from 210-Pb in the short cores indicate that proximity to the river mouth has stronger influence than depositional environment (mudflow gully, depositional lobe, prodelta). This finding may be explained by rapid sedimentation rates coupled with a reduced tropical cyclone activity over the delta in the last seven years (2006-2013) which is a known cause of mass wasting events. The regions of decreased 210-Pb activity may be evidence of scavenging effects of plume sedimentation because they do not correspond with decreases in clay fraction. The layer of homogenized activity below 70cm in the gully core corresponds with a layer of decreased density. This layer occurs at a depth equivalent to 9-18 years, indicating mixing on a decadal scale from mudflows. These results may be explained by a lack of recent mass failures corresponding with lulls in tropical cyclone activity over the delta, preceded by a period of more active hurricane-driven mudflow activity.

▼ The stratified flow of the lower Mississippi River due to density gradients is a well documented phenomenon. This stratification of fresh and saline water manifests itself as a heavier wedge of saline water that extends upriver and a buoyant fresh water plume extending into the Gulf of Mexico past the Southwest Pass jetties. The maximum absolute distance of saltwater intrusion observed anywhere in the world occurred on the Mississippi River in 1939 and 1940 when saltwater was observed approximately 225 km upstream from the mouth of Southwest Pass. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers now prevents the wedge from migrating upstream by constructing a subaqueous barrier in the river channel. A curvilinear grid was constructed representative of the modern Mississippi River delta. Boundary conditions were developed for the drought year of 2012 and the grid was tested in order to evaluate the salinity intrusion and sediment transport abilities of the Cartesian Z-coordinate Delft3D code. The Z-model proved to have the ability to propagate the saline density current as observed in the prototype. The effect of salinity on fine sediment transport is evaluated by manipulation of the settling velocity through a cosine function provided in the model code. Manipulation of the fine sediment fall velocity through the cosine function was an effective means to simulate the re-circulation of flocculated sediments in the saline wedge turbidity maxima. In addition, the Z-model capably reproduced the fine sediment concentration profiles in a fully turbulent shear flow environment. With the ability to reproduce the seasonal saline density current and its effect on sedimentation within the turbidity maxima as well as sedimentation characteristics in a fully turbulent shear flow, a model capable of analyzing all of the major processes affecting fine sediment transport within the Mississippi River salt wedge estuary has been developed. ▼ This thesis provides an assessment of the downtown revitalisation process in Clarksdale, Mississippi, having regard for cultural elements and incorporating a review of literature relating to the role of so-called 'champions' and 'creative people' in driving downtown revitalisation in other cities and towns. The thesis describes the journey embarked upon by the Clarksdale community in its quest for downtown recovery, and highlights the many revitalisation initiatives taken to date. Positive results are evident in new businesses and jobs, improved levels of service, refurbishment of derelict buildings, a renewed sense of place, and an increase in community confidence. The special significance of Blues music and Delta culture to downtown revitalisation is also highlighted through cultural tourism, noting that Clarksdale is situated at the fabled 'crossroads' of Highways 49 and 61 and is also the home to national icons in literature, art and other cultural pursuits. These are key elements around which the Downtown revitalisation effort is focused. Reasons for the decline and revitalisation of Clarksdale are evaluated and related to a broader literature, and lessons are identified to assist downtown revitalisation in other small cities and towns. For many years, the downtown in Clarksdale, with a municipal population 17,600 persons and located in the northern part of the Mississippi Delta, had lost its role as the centre providing a wide range of jobs and services to those living in the surrounding region. Downtown decline has been due largely to the advent of big box retailing and the location of new retail and commercial developments along the State Highway on the edge of town, combined with the loss of jobs and population associated with agricultural restructuring and a loss in manufacturing activity. The thesis emphasises the importance of 'champions' and 'creative people', drawing on community support, in achieving revitalisation. The significance of cultural tourism to Downtown revitalisation is highlighted, with particular emphasis on the global appeal of Blues, but with its roots firmly established in Clarksdale and the Delta. Lessons for other small cities and towns are drawn from the assessment of factors contributing to economic revitalization.

▼ Considerations regarding the mechanisms through which cultural commodification may be woven into the fabric of racial inequity are indispensible when conducting research on African American music tourism in the United States, as white consumers and producers may attach invidious racial mythologies to such heritage, while the industries themselves often take root in communities inhabited by multiple racial groups possessing disparate social and economic power. With these bearings in mind, this thesis assesses the impact of blues tourism development on the experiences of, and between, blacks and whites in Clarksdale, Mississippi, an endemically impoverished Delta city populated by a sizable African American majority. Taking the industry's racial configuration as a starting point—wherein whites predominate both as superintendents and tourists—I seek to expose blues tourism "sites" that occasion a translation of the symbolic elements of racism into more concrete manifestations. In an effort to limn the symbolic, I identify and unpack the racial perspectives of many of those helming Clarksdale's blues tourism industry, ferreting out moments in which white producers use African American musical heritage, and its capitalistic formations, to articulate racial ideologies. Where these systems of belief coalesce behind various racial projects, structural forms of racism take shape. The discursive regions anchoring the dual modalities of this process in Clarksdale's blues tourism industry include the diametric rhetorical strategies of color-blind racism and authenticity; racial reconciliation; participation in the industry; beneficiary rights; and differences in black and white conceptual approaches to racial phenomena intersecting with, and generated by, the industry. At length, I show how the racial ideologies of Clarksdale's white blues tourism managers produce and support a number of racial projects emerging from these topical arenas that contribute to the economic and social marginalization of the city's African Americans. ▼ The Holocene Mississippi River Delta is arguably the world’s most thoroughly researched deltaic system. However, much of this research has occurred predominantly within the present-day subaerial delta, whereas comparatively little research has been attempted downdip within the offshore, more difficult-to-reach parts. This study advances our understanding of the Holocene delta by examining deltaic sediments within the Trinity-Tiger Shoals Complex region, located ~ 30 – 40 km offshore of central Louisiana. Specifically, this study addresses two questions. Which delta complex prograded into this offshore region? Do the overlying transgressive deposits reflect that predicted by the prevailing transgressive depositional systems model? To answer these questions, this study uses an integrated data set consisting of ~ 1,350 km of high-resolution subbottom sonar profiles and various sedimentological data gleaned from 60 vibracores, including 22 AMS radiocarbon dates. Results from this study depict an intricate stacking arrangement of 12 distinct depositional units. Near the base of the stratigraphic framework above antecedent topography are the remnants of a middle Holocene Mississippi Delta complex. Prodelta and delta-front facies along with the partially-preserved southwest trending distributary system that fed these depositional environments are recognized. Furthermore, analysis of the regressive component reveals an offsetting, overlapping, and stacked arrangement of four delta lobes and one subdelta. Five AMS radiocarbon dates (~ 4,820 yr BP to 5,980 yr BP) measured from these regressive sediments confirm a Maringouin Delta Complex origin. A ~ 4,000 yr hiatus ensued following the abandonment of the Maringouin Delta Complex, as indicated by 17 AMS radiocarbon dates measured from the overlying transgressive component. During this hiatus, erosional shoreface retreat produced a prominent ravinement surface along the entire top boundary of the Maringouin Delta. It was not until ~ 1,000 yr BP that significant amounts of sediments began migrating into the study area from the east, which have remained, at least for the time being, mostly preserved. Among these recent post-Maringouin depositional units are a detached down-drift subaqueous delta related to the Lafourche Delta Complex as well as the most-recent sandy deposits of Trinity Shoal and an unnamed shoal. This new understanding of post-Maringouin deposition is considered incompatible with the prevailing transgressive depositional systems model, particularly stage 3 of that model.

▼ Achieving coastal sustainability in low-lying coastal areas is a great challenge. This study developed a spatial dynamic model to study the coupled natural-human responses in the form of population changes in the Lower Mississippi River Basin region. The goal was to identify the key social-economic factors (utility) and selected environmental factors (such as hazards damage, elevation, and subsidence rate) that affect population changes, as well as how population changes affect the local utility and the local environment reciprocally. The study area was partitioned into the “north’ and the “south” by a hypothetical boundary to test the differences of the emergence. Areal interpolation techniques with volume preserving property were used to integrate all the data acquired from different sources and defined in various formats into a unified 3 km by 3 km cellular space. An Elastic Net model was built to extract the rules and calibrate the parameters. Genetic Algorithms were applied to calibrate the neighborhood effects. A Monte Carlo approach using random sampling was used to conduct the uncertainty analysis. The final model yielded an accuracy of above 97% in projecting both the population changes and the developed area percentage changes from 2000 to 2010. A resilience assessment framework and a sustainability assessment framework were used to examine the simulated results from 2010 to 2050. The low-resilience areas were found to concentrate in the “south” in the central metropolitan areas of New Orleans. The sustainability analysis shows that high-resilience areas will always be sustainable. However, for the low-resilience areas, three sustainability conditions can occur depending on the mitigation budget: the tipping space, the mitigatable space, and the sustainable space. A Relative Land Price concept was defined to indicate the surplus value of a spatial unit due to its population and utility. The low-resilience areas were found to have higher Relative Land Prices mainly due to their high populations. In the short time-period simulation (2010-2050), the “south” will fall behind the “north” in population growth and developed land increase, and its average population was projected to be decreasing. However, in the long time-period simulation (2010-2210), its average population is able to bounce back from a certain population level. The results from this study will shed light on the relationships between coastal hazards and human responses and provide valuable insight into the development of optimal strategies for coastal sustainability.

▼ Ninety-eight percent of water taken from the Mississippi River Shallow Alluvial Aquifer, hereafter referred to as the aquifer or MRVA, is used by the agricultural industry for irrigation. Mississippi Delta agriculture is increasingly using more water from the MRVA and the aquifer has been losing about 300,000 acre-feet per year. This research expands on previous work in which a model was developed that simulates the effects of climatic variability, crop acreage changes, and specific irrigation methods on consequent variations in the water volume of the MRVA. This study corrects an identified problem by replacing total growing season precipitation with an irrigation demand driver based on evaporation and crop coefficients and changing the time scale from the entire growing season to a daily resolution. The calculated irrigation demand, as a climatological driver for the model, captures effective precipitation more precisely than the initial growing season precipitation driver. Predictive equations resulting from regression analyses of measured versus calculated irrigation water use showed R² and correlations of 0.33 and 0.57, 0.77 and 0.88, 0.71 and 0.84, and 0.68 and 0.82 for cotton, corn, soybeans and rice, respectively. Ninety-five percent of the predicted values fall within a range of + or - about 23,000 acre-feet, an error of about 10-percent. The study also adds an additional conservation strategy through the use of surface water from on-farm reservoirs in lieu of groundwater. Analyses show that climate could provide the entire water need of the plants in 70-percent of the years for corn, 65-percent of the years for soybeans and cotton, and even 5-percent of the years for rice. Storing precipitation in on-farm structures is an effective way to reduce reliance of Delta producers on groundwater. If producers adopted, at a minimum, the 97.5:2.5 ratio suggested management practice, this minimal management strategy could potentially conserve 48-percent, 35-percent and 42-percent of groundwater for cotton, corn and soybeans, respectively. Even in extreme drought years such as 2007, cotton, corn and soybeans produced under the 97.5:2.5 management strategy could conserve 32-percent, 46-percent and 38-percent of groundwater, respectively. ▼ The purpose of the study was to determine students and faculty membersperceptions of the accelerated nursing programs at two colleges in the Mississippi Delta, Coahoma and Mississippi Delta Community College. The study centered on whether the age, race or gender of the students affected their perceptions of program support, key issues and challenges, and program limitations. The study explored differences in faculty and students perceptions of the accelerated nursing program in regards to local support, nursing faculty, most complicated areas of the program (which were clinical and exams), and barriers. A quantitative research design was used for this study. The survey was themethodological framework that was employed in this investigation to collect the data. The participants consisted of 13 faculty members and 33 students of the accelerated nursing program at two community colleges. The procedure to gather data for this study was two surveys developed by the researcher. The data in this study were obtained by using an Independent t-test, ANOVA and descriptive statistics. The following were findings of this study. No significant differences found in students perceptions of the accelerated nursing program by age or gender. Significant differences were found in students perceptions of the accelerated nursing program by race. The differences found were that Caucasians had a more positive perception than African Americans of salary attracting them to stay and work in the Mississippi Delta. Caucasians also had a more positive perception than African Americans that clinical is the most complicated area of the nursing program. In addition, Caucasians had a more positive perception than African Americans that transportation was a program barrier. Overall, faculty perceptions of the accelerated nursing program varied. Significant differences were found when students; and faculty perceptions were compared. The differences found were that students felt positive about the exams being the most complicated area of the program and the faculty disagreed. The other difference found was that faculty had a negative feeling toward their college lacking financial support from the local area, while students had a positive feeling.
