▼ Entrepreneur financial literacy has been identified as one of the major competencies
required for the establishment and management of microenterprises. However, empirical
studies on the relationship between financial literacy and microenterprise performance
have produced contradictory and inconsistent results and conclusions, hence the need for
further research in this area. This study sought to establish the relationship between
entrepreneur financial literacy, financial access, transaction costs and performance of
microenterprises in Nairobi County, Kenya. The study was guided by five objectives
namely; to establish the relationship between entrepreneur financial literacy and
performance of microenterprises; to determine the relationship between entrepreneur
financial literacy and financial access; to establish the influence of financial access on the
relationship between financial literacy and performance of microenterprises; to assess the
influence of transaction costs on the relationship between financial literacy and the
performance of microenterprises and to determine the joint influence of entrepreneur
financial literacy, financial access and transaction costs on the performance of
microenterprises. To achieve these objectives, five research hypotheses were formulated.
A cross-section design was adopted for the study. The study population comprised of all
microenterprises in Nairobi County, from which a representative sample of 396
microenterprises was drawn. The main study instrument was a questionnaire which
comprised of likert-type scale questions on the main variables of the study. The data was
analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Hypothesis testing was done by
use of regression and correlation analysis. The findings of the study indicated that
entrepreneur financial literacy had a statistically significant influence on enterprise
performance therefore the hypothesis that financial literacy influences enterprise
performance was supported. The study also established that financial literacy had a
statistically significant influence on financial access therefore the hypothesis that
financial literacy influences financial access was supported. The study also revealed that
intervening influence of financial access on the relationship between entrepreneur
financial literacy and performance microenterprises was statistically significant. Further,
the results revealed that transaction costs had a statistically significant moderating
influence on the relationship between entrepreneur financial literacy and performance of
microenterprises. Finally, the study established that the joint influence of entrepreneur
financial literacy, financial access, and transaction cost is statistically significant. This
implies that the study variables jointly predict enterprise performance. The study
recognizes that the variables used for this study are not exhaustive and therefore suggests
that future research should include more triangulation utilizing other intervening and…

▼ This study was designed to assess the contribution of public TVET on strengthen
micro and small
enterprises. It also addressed the role of TVET and MSE for economic empowerments of MSE operators’. A sample of 177 MSE operators engaged in 5 sectors were taken using stratified sampling, 66 TVET trainers were taken using simple random sampling and 7 deans of TVET institutes and 4 head of MSE offices at woreda and sub-city were taken using purposive sampling techniques. In the process of answering the basic questions, a questionnaire that include demographic profiles, the type of supports that MSE operators acquired from TVET institutes, the role of TVET and MSE for economic empowerments of its operators, and the types of challenges that MSE operators faced were designed in a closed ended, open ended and likert scales. Moreover, interviews were held with deans of TVET institutes, head of MSE offices from three woredas and Sub-City and the observation was also carried out based on the checklist. After the data has been collected, it was analyzed using simple statistical techniques (tables and percentages) and descriptive statistics (mean) supported by SPSS soft ware version 20. The findings of the study revealed that, even though TVETs provide technology, machine maintenance, technical skill training supports, there were poor support in the areas of machine maintenance services, marketing training and financial plan and report preparation related trainings. The findings further show as
Micro and small
enterprises in the study area playing a vital role in covering expense demands of the operators and creating employment opportunities for unemployed as well as for students who quit and completed their education at different levels. However, MSE operators are facing various challenges that could affect their sustainable contributions to overall benefits. These includes: capital constraints, inadequate skills, development trainings, and inadequate machine maintenance services provided to the MSE operators by the TVET institutes. Based on the major findings, recommendations were forwarded to MSEs offices, operators, TVET institutes, TVET agency and other concerning government organs.

▼ The contribution of Micro and Small Enterprises in alleviating poverty and in initiating
economic development is found tremendous. Unfortunately, the development and contribution of
MSEs in Bahir Dar could not be significant as expected or required. They have being faced
financial and infrastructural constraints. Besides, they are involving in the competitive business
environment with big firms and companies, and in the society who have long standing attitudinal
problem towards MSEs and their products. Generally, MSEs in Bahir Dar are found in the
deficiency situation of generating customers for their products and services. The aim of the
research, therefore, is exploring the marketing communication strategies used by MSEs in Bahir
Dar, analyzing those marketing communication strategies within the frame work of marketing
communication principles, and identifying appropriate marketing communication strategies that
suit the business and socio-cultural context of the study area. The researcher used qualitative
research method and in-depth individual interview and focus group interview as data gathering
instruments to perform the study. The outcome of the research has indicated that MSEs have not
used appropriate marketing communication strategies and in the way that could tackle those
business and socio-cultural problems. They rarely and inefficiently used media publicity,
exhibition and word-of-mouth marketing communication tools. But, the application of only
commercial marketing techniques and to such level could not be efficient in this business and
socio-cultural environment. And implementation of social marketing technique is crucially
important to tackle long standing and deep rooted negative attitude of the society to MSEs and
their products in addition to appropriate application of publicity and word-of-mouth marketing
communication.

▼ SMEs are generally undercapitalised, suggesting major operational difficulties in
accessing credit and pursuing corporate goals. The Baseline Survey (2000) showed that
only six percent of SMEs successfully applied for and used credit. It is unclear how the
rest who form the majority, meet their working capital and investment'needs. Enterprises
that successfully sought out credit received very modest amounts, probably reflecting the
level of activities in which the enterprises are involved (Kimuyu & Omiti, 2000).The
extent to which entrepreneurs in Kenya can actually benefit from the utilization of this
potential and the factors that influence the adoption of this potential has been unclear. As
such, the main purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of credit on growth of
micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Nairobi.
Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used for data analysis. Quantitative
methods of data analysis such as use of percentages and frequencies were employed in
this research. Information was presented in the form of tables and Pie Charts. Growth to
be analyzed for the purpose of this study was limited to a period of time that is from 1990
to date. The analysis focused on the changes in following variables: - assets in an
enterprise, turnover, investments, outlets and branches. These variables were used to
establish generalizations or facts in achieving the objective of the study, which was to
determine the impact of credit financing on the growth of the SMEs sector in Kenya.
v
From the study findings most of the businesses were getting credit from financial
institutions as banks have been presented as a reliable source of finance for most
businesses. Further the study found micro finance institutions to have been readily
available and to have high level of credit. From the study findings most of the businesses
were being financed by micro Finance institutions as compared to other commercial
banks.
The study in its recommendations noted the need for borrowers to be educated on credit
usage and how to make repayments so as to maintain their creditworthiness. The micro
finance should adopt a reducing balance mode of repayment in order to attract more
borrowers. For the vision 2030 to become a reality and poverty eradication to achieve its
goals, credit has to be made available to finance the required areas of investment.

▼ The primary objective of this study was to investigate the perceptions on the role of locally owned small, medium and
micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the economic development of Rustenburg, South Africa. The study was motivated by theoretical findings that SMMEs are the cornerstone of economic development; yet, the levels of unemployment and poverty were still escalating in Rustenburg. This prompted the researcher to investigate the perceptions on the role of locally owned small, medium and
micro enterprises in the economic development of Rustenburg, South Africa, and the extent of their contribution. The study adopted a descriptive research design and a quantitative approach to determine the role of SMMEs and the extent of their contribution to the economic development of Rustenburg. The study focused on Rustenburg, which had 223 registered SMMEs at the time. The registered 213 SMMEs were identified as the target population of the study, and 10 registered SMMEs participated in the pilot study. A structured questionnaire was used as a data collection instrument. Two hundred and thirteen (213) copies of questionnaires were self-administered. One hundred and eighty-two (182) completed questionnaires were returned, which represented an 85% response rate. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data by utilising the Statistical Analysis Software (SAS). Statistical techniques used in this study comprised frequency analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson’s correlation test, and Tukey’s studentised range test. Empirical findings revealed that SMMEs play a significant role in contributing to the economic development, employment generation and poverty reduction of Rustenburg, with SMMEs in the mining sector making a greater and more significant contribution than other sectors. The study concluded that SMMEs perform a critical role in contributing to the economic development of Rustenburg, especially those in the mining sector. Recommendations were that government should consider increasing the development programmes for SMMEs that operate in Rustenburg, invest in SMMEs’ technology and provide practical SMMEs development training. In addition, government should provide sufficient funding for SMMEs and improve the regulatory framework that governs the SMME sector. This particular study focused on SMMEs operating in Rustenburg. Another study could be conducted on foreign-owned SMMEs.

▼ This body of research investigates the capability
and propensity of a selection of inks and coatings manufacturing
micro-, small- and medium
enterprises, based in and around Cape
Town in the Western Cape, to export product Academic literature
reviewed emphasised the fact that the size of the organisation and
the level of education resident in the organisation was an
important enabler for the business to be export- ready. The
evidence- based research conducted in this study found that
networks linking businesses to concerns already involved in
exporting was the greatest enabler. Previous export experience
amongst the management certainly influenced the alacrity with which
the business took to exporting (a matter of knowing the pitfalls
and being able to mitigate risk beforehand). However, this was not
a deterrent to entering the export market. A champion was needed to
keep the export process on track The size of the business in now
way impeded that business from exploiting the opportunities when
they were presented. The academic literature reviewed also alluded
to the poor skills available in the labour poor. The study found
that businesses were able to work around these hindrances (not
obstacles). The professional qualifications tended to be resident
within the senior management team, which pulled the company through
the exporting process. This has worked well in the short term.
However it could prove a disabling factor in the long term if
suitable qualified candidates could not be found to absorb and take
on the running of the business after the incumbent management team
leaves or retires.

▼ This research identified the critical success
factors in the growth of small businesses in South Africa against
the theories of small business growth. The study applied both
quantitative and qualitative research methodology to identify which
factors contributed most to the growth of the sample of 131 small
businesses in Gauteng province. This was done by (1) identifying
the mean characteristics of small businesses that had experienced
their first disruption to growth after establishment, (2)
identifying the dominant reasons for the growth challenges, (3)
identifying the tools and/or actions employed to transgress the
first challenge to growth and (4) comparing these actions to small
businesses that had not experienced challenges to their growth.
Small businesses facing growth challenges were found to be between
one and three years old, have 36 staff, have sales revenue of R13,5
million and sales growing at 25% per annum. The most common
mitigation tools and/or actions were to hire more staff, hire
competent professional management, source external professional
assistance in the form of a mentor and restructure reporting lines.
This research found that the focus of small business development
should focus on these types of businesses because of their
propensity to grow faster and employ more staff. This study also
emphasised the growth aspirations of the owner/ manager. Lastly a
management model for small businesses was
presented.

first challenge to growth and (4) comparing these actions to small
businesses that had not experienced challenges to their growth.
Lastly a
management model for small businesses was presented.

▼ This body of research investigates the capability and
propensity of a selection of inks and coatings manufacturing
micro-, small- and medium
enterprises, based in and around Cape

▼ This study was conducted to investigate how MSEs get financial sources at establishment
and in operation in Gulelle Sub-City, by investigating the sub city’s MSEs. A descriptive
case study was employed to achieve the objectives of the study. In order to get relevant
data from the target populations both quantitative and qualitative methods were
employed. So, instruments which were used to collect the data from the sample subjects
were questionnaire for MSEs as a major tool and focus group discussion for officials in
Gulelle Sub-City as a supportive tool. 100 MSEs were covered to be the subjects of the
study and other participants of focus group discussion. The data collected via
questionnaires were analyzed using frequencies then converted to percentage values and
qualitative method of data analysis were performed to the data collected through focus
group discussion. Both the qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed together to
triangulate the results found from the questionnaire.
The findings of the study generally indicated that people starting MSEs are facing
numerous difficulties both at start-up and while in due course of operation. The study
indicated that lack of sufficient capital is the main problem of businesses at start-up
followed by input access constraints and obstacles from government rules and
regulations. Similar to the start-up MSEs face numerous problems after start-up like poor
market and market information, lack of working capital, and price or shortage of supply
of raw materials are the most once. The study also indicated that the main financial
sources for start-up and expansion or working capital of MSEs came from personal
savings and family support. Owners find it very difficult to access credit from banks due
to lack of collaterals and the loans provided by MFIs are small with a short repayment
period and high interest rates. The study also shows that the main financial
difficulties/challenges that most MSEs encountered are inability to expand operations,
lack of proper credit facilities, and price escalation (boom) of raw materials. Finally, the
study presented some possible recommendations so as to alleviate the problems.

▼ According to the Sessional paper No. 2 of 2005 on growth and development of micro and small
enterprises in Kenya, only seventeen percent of small and medium firms grow out of micro
firms. This is a real cause of concern to policy practitioners and development agencies.
Enterprises are therefore advised to continuously improve their services in order to attract more
customers and experience growth in sales and income. The purpose of this study was to
investigate the influence of business association’s services on growth of micro and small
enterprises in Starehe Sub- County. The study was guided by these research objectives, to
examine the role of entrepreneurship training in business associations on growth of micro and
small enterprises in Starehe Sub- County, to determine how technology transfers services in
business associations affect growth of micro and small enterprises in Starehe Sub- County. Other
objectives were to explore how networking services in a business association affect growth of
micro and small enterprises in Starehe Sub- County and to establish the impact of financial
services offered by business associations on growth of micro and small enterprises in Starehe
Sub- County. Descriptive survey design was used on the registered business associations by
MSEA in Starehe Sub- County selected through purposive and random sampling techniques.
Questionnaires were administered to selected members of each of the registered associations.
Data was collected and analyzed with the aid of SPSS Version 20 computer program and
Microsoft Excel 2007.Descriptive statistics and have been computed to show the relationship
between variables. Finally the findings have been presented in the form of tables. The findings
have revealed that training services by business associations had positive influence on the growth
of micro and small enterprises. The study revealed that technology transfer services offered by
business associations have very little influence on the growth of micro and small enterprises.
Similarly the study established that networking services in business association had a positive
influence on growth of micro and small enterprises. Finally the study found out that financial
services offered by business associations have little influence on growth of micro and small
enterprise in Starehe Sub-County. It is hoped that the findings will be used to improve business
development programs for the micro and small enterprise sector. The study recommends that the
government through the Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) should partner with
business associations to sponsor more training events for the micro and small enterprise sector. It
is further recommended that for effective transfer of technology to the micro and small
enterprises, MSEA should design more practical oriented training programmes for micro and
small enterprises through collaboration with other agencies especially the National Industrial
Training Authority. Another recommendation is that large enterprises…

▼ In recent times, internet has become foundational in terms of business strategy and growth plans. Internet usage has been proffered as a panacea to expansion and growth in international markets. It has been argued for academics, researchers and business leaders that advancement in internet could bring benefits to Micro- Small and Medium Size Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ghana. However, the adoption of internet technologies among MSMEs in Ghana is minimal due to teething challenges emanating from the inadequate development of internet infrastructure, limited areas of reliable connectivity, high set up cost among others. It has been argued that MSMEs could benefit from adoption of internet technologies such as the email, messenger, client services servers, P2P, B2B, web browsing, social media marketing, etc. Benefits such as broader market reach for products, easy of access to information, and swift customer service delivery are attributed to the adoption of internet technologies. The findings of the research work demonstrate the benefits in more practical terms of adopting internet technologies by MSMEs. It is evident from the findings that most MSMEs apply basic level of internet technologies such as email. Few MSMEs in Ghana maintain a well-functioning website though a significant number also use social media in marketing their products, The study further makes recommendations to assist governments and policy makers in setting the pace for internet technologies penetration across the broad Ghanaian society to facilitate MSMEs incorporation of same into their operations.

▼ The aim of this research is to provide analysis of the rural non-farm sector in Nigeria by investigating inter-linkages between farm and non-farm activities. By critical analysis using quantitative and qualitative research methods to investigate farm and non-farm sectors, the research attempts to reveal the complex linkages between these activities undertaken by rural households. The analysis employs household surveys aimed at collecting primary data undertaken to investigate various aspects of rural livelihoods including sources of income, employment, diversification and determinants of household income. The research provides analysis of Rural Micro and Small Enterprises (RMSEs) in the non-farm sector. It investigates the sources of rural livelihoods, which are primarily based on farming activities. However, farming in this area is still carried out by about 80 percent of households in a traditional subsistence system with crude implements and in scattered plots of about 2.0 hectares or less. This subsistence farming system has resulted in increasing changes in decision making, along with dynamic processes of socio-economic and cultural changes including assets and resources which households depend on for their survival. Diversification of income activities has become an important aspect of rural livelihoods due to continued low agricultural income and output. Non-farm income activities have the potential to reduce rising rural unemployment, providing more income opportunities for young people, women and other vulnerable groups. It can provide capital for investment in child education, home improvement, asset formation and on-farm innovation or expansion. This research argues for an integrated approach towards rural development and poverty reduction through the promotion of both agriculture and non-agricultural sectors. Analysis of household income structure and determinants indicate that non-farm income accounts for about 44% of total household income and non-farm income has become an important source of capital for on-farm and off-farm investment. Ownership of non-farm enterprise, household labour force, level of education, age, farm size (land), financial capital (level of savings) and access to basic infrastructure are the main determinants of household income. Using disaggregated and distributional data the study found variations in effect of the various factors on household income on different groups of households.

▼ Businesses cluster to achieve agglomeration benefits. However, research in developing countries suggests that the economic environment limits small business’ propensity to benefit from agglomerations. The study examines the location, networking patterns, formal structures and owner characteristics of 1256
micro businesses from ten industries and thirteen sample areas in Toluca, Mexico. First, the thesis analyses whether clustering has a positive impact on the success rates of the surveyed
enterprises, e.g. higher sales per employee. On an industry scale only Retail benefits from agglomerations economies. However, results of the neighborhood data show that specific areas benefit from urbanization economies. Overall, the study finds that businesses located within agglomerations, have higher levels of formalization, networking and professional training, hence constituting a more sophisticated base for economic development. Conclusions can be drawn for development policies and programs, arguing for a more differentiated approach of small business development depending on business location and cluster characteristics.

▼ In recent times, enhancing small-scale enterprises
have been viewed as an effective way of fostering the private
sector s contribution to the economic development of a nation.
Small-scale enterprises play a key role in the industrialization of
a developing country like India. The survival and success of a firm
mainly depends on the business environment existing in the State or
country where it exists. There seems to be an agreement among
researchers that the more conducive the business environment, the
more likely new business will emerge and grow. The State of Kerala
has a very high HDI and excellent standard of living. But Kerala s
industrial sector, especially the micro and small-scale
manufacturing sector, has not been performing well for a quite long
period of time. If Keralites can be more entrepreneurial in other
States or countries than in Kerala, the reason should be attributed
to the prevailing business environment in Kerala and not to the
venturesome or lethargic character of Keralites. In this context,
an investigation was conducted in the State of Kerala to determine
the impact of different business environmental factors on the micro
and small- scale manufacturing enterprises. The study identified
the main problems in the functional areas of production, marketing,
finance and human resource management. The study identified the
impact of micro environmental factors upon the functioning of micro
and small manufacturing enterprises. The impact of factors
connected with the customers, the public, the marketing
intermediaries and the regulatory agencies was found as favourable.
But the impact of the competitors, the suppliers and the financiers
was found as unfavourable to the entrepreneurial community. The
collective impact of seven micro environmental factors is
favourable to the entrepreneurial community. As per t test
analysis, there is no significant difference between micro
enterprises and small-scale enterprises regarding the overall
positive impact of micro business environmental
factors.

▼ Open innovation is the use of external partners to increase the innovation capacity of an organization. By cooperating with customers, universities, or other outside partners, companies can gain access to valuable knowledge and resources not available internally. This process is especially suited for smaller companies, which are often more focused on deep knowledge in a niche area, and may lack the wider knowledge of larger companies. This thesis looks at the prevalence of open innovation in startup micro-enterprises in Sweden, and how the use of these methods is linked to increased innovation performance. Based on a review of previous relevant research, a model was constructed around six hypotheses, each corresponding to an external collaboration partner. Empirical data was collected by the use of a quantitative survey, distributed to companies matching the target criteria. Empirical data was then analyzed using statistical software in order to validate if it supported the proposed model. The results show that only two of the six hypotheses, collaboration with customers and technology sourcing, were supported and significant. Two more variables, cooperation with competitors and universities, showed a positive correlation to increased innovation performance, but were not significant. These results are in line with several previous studies, which have also found a strong support for the link between innovation performance and both customer collaboration and technology sourcing, while showing weaker links to other forms of open innovation.

▼ This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the participation of women-owned MSEs in the manufacturing sector in two selected sub-cities of Addis Ababa, namely, Kolfe Keranio and Nefas Silk Lafto sub-cities and to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences and participation of women who own MSEs in the manufacturing sector as well as government entities that support these MSEs. The study adopted a qualitative, exploratory research approach. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to collect data from women who participated in the manufacturing sector, government officials, MSEs experts in the sub-cities and gender office professionals who worked closely with women’s MSEs in the manufacturing sector. Besides, direct observation was used to get firsthand information concerning the nature of women-owned MSEs and their working environments such as limited working space, lack of warehouses, and physical constraints relating to the use of stairs in storeyed buildings, among others. Document review and secondary data were used to triangulate the results from the interviews and obtain quantifiable data that could be used to clarify certain issues in the study. The data were analyzed using thematic data analysis to identify how the theme related to the research objectives. The researcher used a table to visualize the coded themes to determine which was the major problem, support, and characteristics of women-owned MSEs.
The study revealed that women have limited education levels and skills. It is thus difficult for women who own MSEs to exploit advantages or opportunities to expand their business. The findings also reported the inability to access finance for MSEs start-ups and expansion. Women generally lacked information regarding various aspects of MSEs during the establishment of their businesses. Women-owned MSEs have received some support, particularly from government agencies. However, the support they are currently receiving is inadequate to enable them to transform their business. Women-owned MSEs still face problems on many fronts including workspace, limited finance, outdated technology, poor marketing strategies were among others that need addressing. To develop women-owned MSEs and empower other women in the field, the government, the public sector, and formal financial institutes should be informed on the value of gender-balanced contribution in the informal sector
enterprises. It is recommended that there should be a greater focus on the social and economic empowerment of women, as they constitute a vulnerable social category that is critical in development endeavors.

▼ M. Comm.
Entrepreneurship has a significant economic contribution in terms of employment, job creation and wealth creation that can be attributed to entrepreneurial enterprises (Bell, Callaghan, Demick & Scharf 2004:1). Entrepreneurial activity in any economy often takes place in the small- micro- and medium enterprise (SMME) business sector (Rwigema & Venter 2004:315). However, in the establishment of SMMEs, entrepreneurs encounter or perceive barriers that hinder the establishment, sustenance and growth of these important vehicles that are vital to the development of both society and the economy (Kunene 2008). The focus of this research study is therefore to identify barriers and perceived barriers to entrepreneurship. The study is exploratory and specifically attempts to identify and understand the barriers perceived and experienced by entrepreneurs in the township of Mamelodi in establishing, sustaining and growing enterprises.

▼ Micro, Small and Medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) represent 99.9% of businesses in the UK and they face significant challenges with regards to start-up, survival and growth. Their ability to deal with these challenges is assisted, in some cases, by the provision of business support funded by the public sector. Unfortunately, despite the volume of such businesses, there remains a significant lack of qualitative data into the MSME sector, and their use of university led business support. This thesis examined the business support agenda, the support needs of MSMEs, the role of universities in the provision of business support, and the needs of public funding bodies, with regards to economic sustainability and growth in the West Midlands. The choice to focus on the West Midlands region was largely pragmatic; the researcher has existing relationships with the small business community and University networks within the region allowing for a comparable study of stakeholders with similar environmental, political and economical challenges. Whilst the findings are therefore in relation to the West Midlands region, they have been compared to secondary data and theoretical frameworks in order to propose a contribution, which is applicable to a wider audience. The thesis adopted an exploratory, interpretivist methodology with an emphasis on the practical importance of the research results. Through an explanatory sequential mixed methods approach, surveys were used to collect data from MSME business owners, followed by in-depth interviews with university staff in order to produce institutional case studies. The surveys with MSME owners identified a need for support that was free, local, face-to-face and delivered by an organisation with a good reputation for delivering business support. The survey data also indicated confusion amongst MSME owners about the availability of support from universities, as well as questions around the quality of support provided by universities and its impact. The interviews, and case studies, revealed a significant level of interest, and a feeling of responsibility, from universities towards supporting the MSME community. However there were consistent challenges around funding, sustainability, resources, flexibility of delivery, and the longevity of any enterprise strategy. The research makes a useful contribution to knowledge through the development of multiple case studies and the development of a conceptual framework for a sustainable system of university led, MSME business support. The model, and analysis, considers the detailed experiences, challenges and opportunities from the stakeholders and proposed a sustainable support system. This contribution to literature provides a unique perspective for both practical application and for the research community to utilise further.

▼ Knowledge and innovation were seen as major forces, both for survival, as the
acquisition of competitive advantages in the Brazilian economy, as well as adding value
to the product as a market differentiator. The Triple Helix model is directed toward the
knowledge-based economy. Over the past six years, the Federal Government through the
Financier of Studies and Projects ( FINEP ) invested in technological innovation projects,
economic subsidies, about U.S. $ 1 billion supporting more than 800 projects with these
resources. According to the MCTI , the Northeast, over the years 2000 to 2010 increased
spending on Science and Technology (considering the activities of research and
development more scientific and related activities) of the State Government in relation to
its total revenue In 2000, 0.51% of total revenues were invested in Science &
Technology, while in 2010 this figure increased to 1.31%. Among the nine Northeast
states, Paraíba is highlighted. In 2000, 0.33% of its total revenues were directed to
innovation, reaching 2.04% in 2010, the largest increase in the region while the RN

The Involvement of Micro and Small Enterprises in Solid Waste Management Services in Addis Ababa: The Case of Bole and Arada Sub-cities

▼ In Addis Ababa as in many cities of the developing countries, solid
waste
micro and small
enterprises are involved in solid waste
management services and generating employment opportunities for
urban labor force since 1998/1999. This research is mainly
emphasizing the management and job creation role that the
involving MSEs can play in solid waste services.
In order to achieve the objective of the study, a social survey with a
questionnaire covering a total population of 37
enterprises and a
sample of 80 workers was conducted on two purposely selected
sub-cities, i.e. Bole and Arada. The survey indicated that MSEs to
do solid waste activity with limited start-up capital, traditionally
made labor-intensive working tools and workers with only few
health protective materials. Joblessness and Capability for
physical work are the major criterion for employment. The results
of the research in general showed that over three fourths of the
MSEs participated in primary solid waste collection using hand
pushcarts up to the municipal transfer points through door to door
collection system. Entrepreneurial activities in sorting, compost
processing and recycling are less developed though it is
encouraging. MSEs are involved in solid waste activity with the
method of open-competition and zonal monopoly and have personal
relations to clients in terms of contracts and payment of service
charges. Lack of working tools and shortage of finance are the two
major constraints for the operation and growth of MSEs. Some
financial support for entry in the activity depends on the social
network of friendship and relatives rather than formal financial
institutions. Most of the MSE operators started solid waste activity
without any training but attracted by it as a survival strategy.
Generally there is a need for strengthening the MSEs growth by
expanding the
micro- finance institutions and providing especial
financial support for the solid waste sector. Government and NGOs
support should also be focused on training and consultancy
services or in general informative services concerning market,
documentation or accounting system. Encouraging public-private
partnership with medium-scale
enterprises to reduce the problem of
ix
waste transporting and disposal is one of the main issues to be
focused. In addition, government (municipal) partial intervention on
the method of MSEs participation should be based on an objective
assessment of the reality to minimize the conflict that arises
between the new entrants and existing MSEs in case of
unnecessary competition to be the sector effective. There is also a
need for the government to negotiate with the MSEs owners to
ensure employees get at least the minimum wage of the country.

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the SMMEs in the area of rural UMzimkhulu Municipality do access funding from the banking institutions as well as other funding organisations, government and agencies. This research looked at the challenges they have in accessing the funding for both start-ups and business development.
The research method used was qualitative and interviews conducted from a sample of SMMEs in UMzimkhulu. These challenges are viewed as possible reasons why most SMMEs are failing as a result of financial difficulties and therefore should be investigated. This kind of situation persists despite the available support by government who developed policies and strategies for support. As a result of these policies, development bodies such as DTI, SEDA and Khula
enterprises and other government departments (Economic Development) in the provinces and locally (LED) to assist and give support to SMMEs. It is intended that the study of SMME challenges in relation to finance access will provide recommendations to improve their livelihood and life cycle of these businesses.
The research findings highlight some of the challenges for SMMEs such as those of being unable to provide some of the requirements of funding bodies. Furthermore, the funding bodies were found to favour those businesses that were already doing well over smaller, fledgling or struggling businesses which required funding to continue their operations. The research also found that most SMMEs do not access funding that is available because they do not know of the funding available from government agencies and also because the offices for these institutions are based in big cities far away from them. The findings from this research can be used to assist in policy development and turn-around strategies in the funding of the SMME sector. It will also potentially contribute towards addressing the challenges faced by SMMEs in other rural areas as it will reflect challenges not only in UMzimkhulu but also similar rural areas. The research also highlights the recommendations and scope for further research.

▼ Micro and small
enterprises (MSEs) are generally recognized as a main factor of economic
growth and equitable development. Their contribution to employment generation, poverty
reduction and wider distribution of wealth and opportunities represents a major window of
opportunity for most developing countries. However, the potential role of MSEs is often not
realized because of a set of problems and limitations they encounter on their path to
establishment and growth. Most of them Lack capital, skills, schooling, information and
technical knowhow, producing at best only simple and low quality products. Isolated
micro
and small
enterprises would also face difficulty to attract traders, as trading cost per
transaction would be disproportionately high.
This study concerns about clustering of bamboo MSEs to increase the productivity and
competitiveness of the sector. Ethiopia has the largest area of bamboo in Africa. Studies
show that bamboo harvest in Ethiopia constitutes 67 percent of the total production in Africa.
[1] But the production and consumption of bamboo and bamboo products is very limited.
With the objective of to propose cluster development model for bamboo
micro and small
enterprises, the study analyzed the problems and challenges faced by bamboo sector taking
the Addis Ababa bamboo entrepreneurs. The study is done based on questioner, intensive
interviews, focused group discussion and secondary data. With the developed bamboo cluster
model the study showed that there is a need of an external force that would facilitate the
benefits accruing from deliberate joint action. With this regard sector specific interventions
being performed.

▼ Micro and Small
enterprises had been playing prominent role in poverty reduction and local economic growth. Apart from this, MSEs have a role in community development by increasing improving social, financial, physical, human and natural capital. This research explores the contribution of
Micro and Small
enterprises in community development in Gullele Sub-City, Addis Ababa. The analysis was based on primary and secondary data collected through administrative type of questionnaires and key informant interviews from the operators, government officials, and enterprise representatives. The role of MSEs is viewed in light of its contribution in boosting the five community capital (Social, financial, human, physical and natural). Finally, discussion was held with operators regarding the challenge and opportunities the
enterprises and operators are facing now. The results indicate that, MSEs plays important role in community development by boosting communities capital. Some of the challenges are some operators who joined the formed group lately did not get any training and the balance of the focus of MESs higher officials in demanding MSEs for politics than community development and poor supportive supervision by MSEs offices are exhibited. Nonetheless, human capital, financial capital, physical capital, natural capital are uplifted and remarkable contributed for community development as bonding capital and networks with other people outside the group is formed in the normal course of business operation as bridging capital. Yet, as there is much untapped potential, much has to be done in unleashing communities resources to boost community development.

▼ This study investigates the role business information plays in the performance and poverty reduction of micro and small entrepreneurs in Kariobangi. The study considers micro and small entrepreneurs in Kariobangi, Nairobi, as agents of poverty reduction. The study has used International Labour Organization (ILO, 2002) definition of micro and small enterprises as “those economic entities that are characterized by ease of access; dependence on native resources; family possession; small scale of operation; use of adapted technology and skills obtained outside the conventional educational system; and not moderated and competitive markets” (ILO, 2002). The micro and small entrepreneurs in Kariobangi operate in business environments that have limited relevant business information on credit, business location, customers, price, markets, technology, government policy and regulations, and support services. This situation motivated this survey to investigate the potential influence of business information on micro and small entrepreneurs as agents for poverty reduction. It has done this by examining how the use of different types of business information, networks, preferred media and other demographics influence poverty reduction.
Mugande (2003)” the study uses both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Due to the absence of an official list of micro and small entrepreneurs in the study area”, the researcher constructed own sample population using a list of 1436 enterprises supported by some churches in Kariobangi as a baseline. A simple random sample of 144 entrepreneurs, proportionately drawn from the four clusters in the study area, was selected for the survey. Research assistants, who were mainly young people from Kariobangi, were recruited and trained to pre-test and administer the structured questionnaires under the supervision of the researcher. The survey was followed by detailed case studies of ten entrepreneurs purposively selected using a matrix of variables from the poverty category. The filled questionnaires were cleaned, coded and then entered into a computer database. “Analysis of quantitative data using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences proceeded in stages, starting with the generation of descriptive statistics of some of the variables” (Mugande 2003). Further tests of correlation between dependent and independent variables were also done. Qualitative data from in-depth interviews of the cases were content analysed.
The study has found that access and use of business information enabled micro and small entrepreneurs to graduate out of the poverty category. In particular, entrepreneurs who accessed and used different types of business information, networks, preferred media and demographics shared information were able to perform well and exit from poverty. Besides recording improved income, this category of entrepreneurs were able to access better health care, housing, safe water and education for their household. Notably, the main sources of business information were the family unit,…

▼ Micro-finance refers to small scale financial services such as cash loans, money transfers, direct
deposits, savings, and insurance made accessible primarily to the poor. Micro enterprises can be
defined as those enterprises employing up to 10 workers (including the owner) and small
enterprises as those employing more than 10 up to 15 workers.
The research was aimed at investigating the impact of micro-finance credit on the financial
performance of SMEs in Kenya. The study was carried out in Nairobi region targeting SMEs in
service industry, manufacturing sector, trade and food processing industries.
The research found out that as SMEs grow they require funds to finance growth in fixed asset
and increase working capital. SMEs therefore require long-term credit in ever increasing
amounts so that they can purchase raw materials, supplies and carry out activities that they need
to facilitate the production process. From the study findings it was concluded that, access of
credit by SMEs from MFIs greatly influences their performance. The conclusion is supported by
the results from the various descriptive statistics. The descriptive statistics on net profit indicate
that the net profit after access of credit from MFIs was more than the net profit before access of
credit. This is attributed to the increased working capital of the SMEs and expansion of business
operations. These findings have implications for management of MFIs to ensure that policies are
instituted to facilitate easy access of loans by SMEs from MFIs.
Management of MFIs should therefore, among other things come up with policies which can
help those with no collaterals but good ideas to access credit from MFIs, encourage personal
service delivery, provide financial advisory services to individual proprietors when advancing
credit to them, lower lending rates while improving service delivery and train people on risk
management and financial management. The Government should also regulate MFIs to ensure
that the SMEs are not exploited by MFIs.
