The present study deals with the relationship between pastoral power and schools institutions. He focused on three distinct historical moments: the appearance of the monastery of St. Benedict, whose Rule would now become a model for the Western monastic life, the advent of Protestantism, which produced a fracture in Christianity and gave rise to a new type of pastorate, and the appearance of Didactica magna, the first major attempt to systematize the pedagogical knowledge in its entirety. The corpus is composed primarily by the Rule of St. Benedict, for various texts of Luther and for The Great Didactic of Comenius. The main theoretical framework comes from Foucauldian studies of governmentality and the method employed is the archeogenealogical developed by Foucault. The main conclusion is that Christian pastorate had a decisive role in the formation of the pedagogical device, which can be observed mainly: a) in the establishment of purpose around which this device was organized; b) in the definition of the knowledge to be taught; and c) in the power techniques mobilized.

▼ The city of Venice has sparked the imagination and creativity of many writers, resulting in a large number of literary versions of this city. But how are we to consider the amalgamation of the real and this imagined Venice? In his lecture “Of Other Spaces” (1967), French philosopher
Michel Foucault argues we live in a world of simultaneity, rather than linearity and he sees an increased importance for the dimension of space in our experience of the world. Since this space that we are living in cannot be reduced to a single characteristic,
Foucault considers it to be of a network-like character. He is especially interested in heterotopias: “spaces which are linked with all the others, which however contradict all the other sites” (24).
The question at the centre of thesis is: What is the value of a heterotopic approach for studying literature? I will study three literaty cases: the novella The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan, the novel The Nature of Blood by Caryl Phillips and the film Don’t Look Now by Nicolas Roeg. As they have only been written in the past forty years, they have not yet acquired a canonical status, and there is still a lot to be written and said about them. The thesis starts with a chapter on Foucault’s lecture ‘Of Other Spaces’ and a discussion of his heterotopia concept, followed by an overview of the most dominant themes that have influenced and shaped the literary imagination of Venice; and finally the three case studies.
I will conclude with the argument that heterotopic literature is literature that fulfils a ‘different’ task. It distinguishes itself from fellow texts by spatiality and form: presented with a defamiliarizing appearance, it can force the reader to think over the meaning of this otherness. This literature can use other texts, by reflecting or inverting their forms and themes. Foucault’s heterotopia offers a framework to analyse this otherness and to place the link between the real and the imagined space. Heterotopic literature is both the other space (the counter-space of reality), and the other literature.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The idea of what it means to be a Chinese minority ‘Mongolian university student’ is usually explored in Chinese academic scholarship and educational practice within essentialist discourses. This approach not only stereotypes students as being ‘backward’, ‘underachieving’, ‘disruptive’, ‘powerless’ and with ‘low’ intelligence, but adopts a perspective that the researcher is the “author of knowledge” (St. Pierre, 2000, p. 494) whose detached observation and rational mind provide unmediated access to students’ lives. In this ethnographic study, utilizing poststructuralist perspectives and drawing upon the analytic framework of Foucauldian discourse analysis and category boundary work, I explore the multiple, fluid and heterogeneous ways in which ‘Mongolian university students’ subjectivities are variably enacted, validated, contested or rearticulated in the continuous constitutive practices of category boundary work – maintaining, reinforcing, contracting and challenging category boundaries. It is a perspective that sees ‘Mongolian university students’ as the discursive category and in within/against which subjectivities are constantly enacted and contested in the process of discursive inclusion and exclusion. I focus on how ‘Mongolian university students’ negotiate the category’s boundaries and what subject positions are available. Through emphasizing the strategic negotiation of multiple and shifting subject positions, I aim to disrupt the notion of ‘prejudice reduction’ (Banks, 2004) in multicultural education which aims to “help students develop positive racial attitude and values” (p. 5). I argue that this understanding of ‘prejudice reduction’ not only essentializes ‘minority students’ as single, fixed and stable attributes, but perpetuates the stereotypical representation of them. I argue for using Petersen’s (2004, 2007) concept of category boundary work to denaturalize and defamiliarize normative constructions of ‘minority students’ subjectivities. Such a denaturalizing act brings into light how discourses are utilized to make certain knowledge legitimized and what discourses are mobilized to constitute conditions of possibilities of certain subjects. Therefore, my study contributes to the poststructuralist problematisation of the conventional wisdom of essentializing discourses prevailed in minority education and social science research and opens up a promising space for future research to explore how meanings are discursively enacted and contested.

▼ Despite their extensive philosophical agreements, the
case can be made that Richard Rorty and Michel Foucault were at
odds politically. The devout liberal that he was, Rorty struggled
continuously to come to grips with what he took to be a sort of
radicalism espoused by the French thinker. As a result, Rorty’s
critical engagement with Foucault over political matters was always
two-sided. On the one hand, he commended the latter’s ability to
draw attention to the insidious aspects of contemporary liberal
societies. On the other hand, he was critical of Foucault’s
apparent disdain for liberal societies and institutions. Though
Rorty would often frame this criticism in different ways, he
resisted viewing his political disagreement with Foucault as having
any philosophical basis. That is, he tended to see Foucault’s
radicalism as the result of contingent sociological and
biographical factors, rather than as the outcome of philosophical
argument. Against this picture, the aim of my thesis is to explain
the political disagreement between Foucault and Rorty on the basis
of their divergent views concerning conceptual relativism—the idea
that there can exist incommensurable conceptual frameworks. In
particular, I suggest that whereas Rorty’s pragmatic defense of
liberalism is bolstered by his rejection of conceptual relativism
as a tenable philosophical thesis, many of Foucault’s more
radical-sounding political claims are supported by the version of
conceptual relativism that he put forth in his archaeological
writings of the 1960’s.

▼ The dissertation begins with an autoethnographic account of my own experiences as a CPE chaplain resident and current PRN hospital chaplain in order to explore wider relationships between pastoral care and dominant health care trajectories and politics. Using empirical studies, personal accounts by health care professionals, and the political theories of
Michel Foucault, I argue that current trends and practices in the hospital both marginalize those who cannot buy into the system and render the human experience of decline and death invisible. Chaplains contribute to these trends through their pastoral presence, assessment, and recording of the patient’s spirituality. These practices are heavily laden with the therapeutic ideals of acceptance and self-realization, which further medicine’s power and management of death rather than reckoning with the realities of loss in human experience. However, employing the theories of Julia Kristeva and Jean-Luc Nancy, I also argue that chaplains nonetheless experience a sense of loss in their work of care and articulate this loss with families and patients in the terms of spirituality. These experiences and language recognize and honor loss within the hospital, thus subverting the excesses of biomedicine today that can speak only of progress and commodification.

▼ This thesis examines Michel Foucault's elucidation of a mode of subjectivity upon which he could predicate the possibility of resistance to power. While most studies of his thought have emphasized the extent to which, for Foucault, subjects are the products of power, this thesis seeks to examine that mode of subjectivity which, for him, can escape the reach of power or can resist power. This thesis shows that Foucault borrowed extensively from the works of Georges Bataille and Georges Canguilhem in articulating a vitalist conception of the subject, a subject whose ability to resist power resided in the vital forces which traversed it.
In achieving these tasks, this thesis responds to the liberal critics of Foucault who argue that his conception of power effectively eliminates the rationale for or possibility of resistance. The thesis also elucidates for the first time the nature of the intellectual influence Bataille had upon Foucault, showing that Foucault used Bataillean conceptions of sovereignty and the sovereign subject. It also radically reinterprets the influence Canguilhem had on Foucault, showing that, beyond well documented methodological influences, Canguilhem provided Foucault with a framework for theorizing power and resistance.

▼ Tutkielmassani tarkastellaan arkistoteoreettisen keskustelun filosofista pohjaa. Sähköisten aineistojen yleistymisen myötä alan tieteellisessä keskustelussa huomio on kiinnittynyt muun muassa arkiston luonteen tarkasteluun sekä vanhojen käsitteiden ja toimintamallien uudelleenarviointiin. Vertailukohtaa perinteiselle arkiston määritelmälle on haettu filosofiasta.
Tutkielmassani selvitettiin, ovatko arkistoteoreetikot ottaneet vaikutteita Michel Foucault'n ajattelusta. Tutkin, miten vaikutteita on otettu ja millä tavalla Foucault on alan tieteellisessä keskustelussa nostettu esiin. Tutkimusaineiston keruu on toteutettu kahdessa vaiheessa.

▼
Abstract
Literary portraits of African Americans’ struggles in the United States for a more equal society have provided valuable insights into the pain and hardship they had to endure for a large portion of the United States’ existence. Ralph Ellison’s famous novel Invisible Man is one of those novels and is the primary source for this study. In this novel the unnamed African American protagonist tries to find a place of his own within a segregated society and has to succumb to the white man’s will to be part of American society. Despite the segregation and subjugation, the protagonist believes that he can progress in American society through education, but his development is constantly thwarted because of his skin colour. Ellison utilizes features from the bildungsroman to highlight how differently education works for African Americans and white people, since the traditional progression of the bildungsroman is not possible for the protagonist despite his trying to follow its traditional pattern. The thwarted progression instead seems to move the plot into another type of progression, namely a spiritual progression. I will therefore conclude that education in Invisible Man creates segregation and subjugation and that the protagonist’s progression is subverted into a spiritual progression. How the protagonist’s journey can be subverted is related to how power structures and discourses influence people’s actions and beliefs. I will use Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish and The Archaeology of Knowledge to explain how power structures and discourses enable segregation, subjugation and a spiritual progression. Furthermore, the result will reveal that, because of surrounding power structures and discourses, the protagonist cannot do anything in this American society other than conform to prevailing power structures or hide himself until he knows how to battle these structures. Keywords: Education; Segregation; Bildungsroman; Michel Foucault; African American.

▼ My dissertation develops and defends a concept of reparative critique that presses critical philosophy beyond its affinities with negative judgment. In the wake of Post-Kantian philosophy, critique has become associated with the work of negative judgment that aims to denounce or condemn some object or position. Unlike forms of negative critique, which are guided by affects of suspicion and paranoia, reparative critique is informed by a range of affects like hope, care, and concern that highlight the transformative dimension of critical inquiry. I advance the argument of the dissertation toward two main aims. In Part One, I defend and flesh out the practice of reparative critique by turning to the work of two figures from the history of philosophy: William James and
Michel Foucault. These figures are exemplary, I argue, for the way they engage critique as a reparative exercise. In the introduction I situate these thinkers’ contributions to critique by way of the signal and originating work on philosophical critique by Immanuel Kant. In spite of their differing philosophical backgrounds and concerns, James and
Foucault offer varieties of reparative critique that cohere along the conceptual lines of action, affect, and transformation. I reinterpret Foucault’s genealogy and James’s pragmatism in two separate chapters to develop the agential, affective, and transformative dimensions of reparative critique.
In Part Two of the dissertation, I draw on the historical precedents supplied by James and
Foucault to put reparative critique to work for contemporary political philosophy. In the first of these chapters, I use the frame of recent debates over the status of ideal theory in political philosophy and argue that reparative political critique must be realist, rather than idealist, in orientation. I then deploy this realist method of reparative critique in the chapters that follow to analyze the problem of racial bias and discrimination posed by the operation of power in digital technologies like predictive policing algorithms.

▼ Frederic Truby King (1858-1938) is an eminent figure in New Zealand history. His name continues to flourish in contemporary society, due in part to its affiliation with the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society. However, the general populace is still relatively unaware of the time that King spent employed as the medical superintendent of Seacliff Lunatic Asylum, on the remote outskirts of Dunedin. The prevailing image of King during this period is of a single-minded physician, whose career was in a state of acceleration towards the establishment of Plunket. But historians like Barbara Brookes and Catherine Coleborne have rightly started to establish this epoch as significant in its own right. This thesis extends their work by engaging with previously unpublished casebook photographs of patients in King’s care, taken between 1887 and 1907, from the restricted Seacliff Lunatic Asylum archives. Through six case studies, this thesis draws connections between these photographs and the paradigms established by such internationally renowned photographers as Hugh W. Diamond and James Crichton-Browne. It then discusses some distinctive photographs that appear unique to this institutional environment, images that challenge our preconceived notions of psychiatric institutions and their functions. This visual history complicates, and sometimes even challenges, the argument about psychiatric institutions and disciplinary power proposed by
Michel Foucault and John Tagg, by demonstrating the diverse forms of photography that can occur within a single institution. This study is part of a growing body of research on the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum archives. In using a largely untapped source of photographic history, this project will contribute to future research on similar topics.

▼ This dissertation takes the concept of curiosity, typically understood as a purely epistemological issue, and investigates its political stakes. I argue that curiosity is not only an underappreciated method of philosophy but also a critical practice for building inclusive political communities. By analyzing poststructural accounts of curiosityespecially from Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida-I identify two primary modes of curiosity. First, there is a curiosity that objectifies and often fetishizes what is different, and, second, there is a curiosity that destabilizes and transforms. While philosophy has historically dismissed both in favor of a respectful and reliable wonder, I argue that a critical account of curiosity is essential if we are to predicate our political ethos on shared subjecthood. Finally, drawing on archival material from Foucault's prison activism and Derrida's death penalty abolition seminars, I take punishment as a case study in curiosity, demonstrating curiosity's centrality not only to juridical trials and media coverage, but also its tactical importance for prison resistance movements and abolitionist efforts. While curiosity has the capacity to underscore already reigning structures of political privilege, it can also destabilize ideologies.

▼ In this text, I argue for the revision of Husserlian phenomenology through a dialogue with the work of
Michel Foucault. Specifically, I argue that
Foucault's critical project, in which we isolate the contingent limits of thought so as to pass beyond them, and thus think new ways of being, can be filled out by the work of Edmund Husserl and differentiated into two lines of inquiry: a critical ontology and a critical phenomenology. This is accomplished by bringing these two philosophers, commonly held to be diametrically opposed, into dialogue such that together they say something that neither could say on their own.

▼ Even the most casual observer of the American political system will note the adversarial and polarized relationship between Republicans and Democrats. Rather than focusing on the general differences between the two parties, this project looks at how the language and dialogue of political elites affects the average American voter. What I found is that, as the two parties discussed certain issues more frequently and in distinct ways, these issues became increasingly important to the American electorate. In other words, politicians tell voters which issues are important to them through their choice of rhetoric. This is quite different than common assumptions of democratic societies where legislators merely represent the interests of their constituents, rather than manufacture them.

Based on philosopher Michel Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical research, this thesis examines the conditions upon which the childhood is founded in modern times. It also proposes an approach to this matter – when being a rational individual (either from an epistemic or a moral perspective), becomes an imperative in western cultures, childhood appears in a position of alterity to reason. From this perspective, modern schooling plays a crucial role. It promotes the separation between age groups, the youngster’s confinement and its strict moralization. Disciplinary education is an instrument through which infants are taught to develop a rational mindset. In modern times, the interrelations between reason and non-reason have multiple modalities. This thesis delineates three forms of infant subjectivation, namely: comenian childhood, rousseaunian childhood and freudian childhood. Comenian childhood occurs at early levels of a rational progression, which plenitude is in God. Rousseaunian childhood is the other of human reason and it is spontaneously oriented for reason. Finally, freudian childhood is constantly questioning the modern rationalist project. Furthermore, these forms of subjectivation have different relations with disciplinary…

Through the Foucauldian Studies theoretical and methodological lenses, this thesis has a genealogical gaze upon the emergence of Psychopedagogy in Brazil, problematising the conditions enabling it. For this, it does an analysis of a series of practices (including discourses) taken as new horizons for the emergence of the psychopedagogical field. At first, we have provided wider conditions far beyond the Brazilian case, suggesting that the earlier possibilities to establish the psychopedagogical ground were arranged by the relationships between children studies, the link between Psychology and Pedagogy, and the invention of abnormal children, as well as practices by Maria Montessori, Ovide Decroly, Edouard Claparède and Jean Piaget. Then we have provided conditions for the possibility of Psychopedagogy especially in Brazil, by assessing three documents and two institutions of higher education involved in disseminating and recreating the New School principles. In this part, Fernando de Azevedo, Lourenço Filho, Anísio Teixeira e Helena Antipoff have arisen to prominence.
Since his early writings, Michel Foucault has debated the association between knowledge and power. The emphasis of his reflection focuses on the modus operandi, by means of which knowledge deals with the relative questions regarding the subject, such as the insane person, who receives the technical-theoretical inflections from psychiatric-psychological knowledge for the conformation of the identity of the insane person. This dynamics of forces, that intercross one another, receives a prominence in the present masters dissertation: in what way does the family establish a partnership with medical-psychological knowledge to give a specific form to the subjectivity of the insane person? What does the family gain, while social institution, in this task? What are the contours of this institution, accented for Foucault, which disclose its features of space in subjectification and/or subjection? The constructed debate appeals to the deductive-logical method, by means of which it makes a literature revision to give coherence to the peripheral place, but not irrelevant, occupied by the family in the writing of Michel Foucault.

The present study aims to investigate the rules that give shape to the handwriting that is delivered to Brazilian schools through handwriting textbooks. In order to analyze such rules, I have cast a genealogical view while searching for connections to the conditions of possibility that allowed the enunciation, the circulation and the character of truth in the discourses that have construed the handwriting that gains visibility in the architecture created for the textbooks; this architecture, as will be discussed in this study, operates for the production of legible and speedy handwriting, which no longer has to be necessarily beautiful or decorative, as it had been advocated by the Brazilian school for a long time.
The goal of this research is analyzing how Michel Foucaults works on the care of the self and the governmentality can be read as inheritors of the critical theory initiated by Immanuel Kant. The investigative method was centered on the analysis of Foucaults texts, fundamentally using the originals in French. Foucaults vision of Kants studies, as the basis of a new way to philosophize about the relationship between the truth and the subject, represents an important analysis to understand Foucaults writings about the self care and the governmentality. Starting by an analysis of the influence of pastoral power in the formation of governmentality, it is possible to do a genealogy of the self care as a constitution mode of non-subjected subjectivity. These work conditions would allow philosophers to clarify the current possibilities of freedom, questioning about the limits and powers that act upon it. Under this perspective, Foucaults work faces the challenge of questioning the present, aiming to build an ethos based on a critical attitude. This task can be found definitely in…

Michel Foucault in his book Discipline and Punish (Vigiar e punir) invents the concept of panoptic studying its architectural plan elaborated by Jeremy Bentham. Foucault tries to understand the panoptic inserted in problems about space that are, for him, connected to difficulties, in the XVIII century, to deal with population growth and its transformations. According to Bentham, the physical structure of panoptic is a circular building with a central tower, where someone can observe the cells constructed around it. To achieve the panoptism invention by Foucault, the dissertation was divided in three chapter. In the first was made an investigation about panoptism circumstances in order to inset the author and his work in a universe of production. The second deals with Foucault and Benthams approximations and divergences on conceptions about the panoptic. Besides this, the second chapter shows how Foucault takes the panoptic as an indicative of one temporality. The third chapter makes splitting in Foucaults thought in phases, connect them with the art and the métier of make history to understand how it can tell about panoptism invention.

Judith Butler is better known for her best-seller Gender Trouble, that aims at troubling how gender has been thought until then. Afterwards she publishes several works that deepen and further develop her philosophy, largely based on considerations Michel Foucault has originally made, taking into account his idea of a power that positively produces the subjects. Butler inquires the terms that draw the field of possibility of the subjects, unveiling how our notions of reality are informed to us by language, that denotes to merely describe that which it actually frames into existence and orquestrates. She calls for social transformation and proposes an enlargement of the category of human.
