▼ This is a
memorial to gold mining in Southeast Alaska. The structure takes visitors from the Treadwell trail onto the edge of a popular local beach, reclaiming a forgotten place that was once the largest gold mine in the world. A tangible tribute to this obscure period of history, this building kindles a connection between artifacts and the community. It is a liminal space, connecting ocean and mountain, past and present, civilization and wilderness. An investigation of the Treadwell Gold Mining complex influenced its form and function. Its foundation is two deep concrete footings that achieve stability in the loose tidal flat sand. Its building assembly is a result of model studies to understand the connections between the central wall, roof, and floor. This is the end result of a desire to build a meaningful place in Alaska.

▼ Recently, a climate of fear and intolerance has come to the fore and is detrimental to our societal well-being. As democratic values have been attacked, there has also been a return to the use of the public landscape as a site of protest and
political action. Now, the design of public space and the effectiveness of activist movements have become concerns catapulted to the national stage. Though state-sponsored memorials and monuments contain political value, they have also been sites of
institutionalized oppression that are reductivist in nature. On the part of activism, it can be intimidating and exclusionary in practice despite its goals of equality and justice. It is the responsibility of the designer not to be complicit with the
status quo. As methods of representation and communication evolve, this thesis aims to show that landscape architects can play a significant role in re-conceptualizing memorial and activist forms.

▼ As Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom draw to a close, Americans are curious to learn more about soldier experiences during wartime. War memorials document public war memories and how the masses relate to war, while personal war narratives rely on performance vessels, such as plays, autobiographical novels, and movies to reach an audience. Texas A&M University’s rich military history relies on war memories to serve as a cultural cornerstone to produce an “Aggie” identity. At Texas A&M, both the public and private sectors of war memories are available through performances ranging from memorials such as the
Memorial Student Center to the 2014 staged performance of The Telling Project’s Telling Aggieland.
In this MA thesis, based on ethnographic fieldwork with Texas A&M University’s
Memorial Student Center and veterans involved with Telling Aggieland, I explore the intersection between the public and private sectors of war memories. By examining the history of the MSC as well as student interactions with the building, I explore the public performance of the war
memorial and how spectators negotiate these memories into their own (often civilian) lives. Additionally, fieldnotes from the performance process of Telling Aggieland, as well as interviews with participants, informs my understanding of how the performance of personal war narratives bridges gaps between veterans and civilians, while also serving as a therapeutic healing process. Combining my fieldwork of the MSC with my ethnographic interviews with veteran performers, I investigate how performance in the public and private sectors

History-History of arcihtecture

▼ Rwanda is a low income, landlocked and heavily populated country in Sub-Sahara Africa. Regardless of its majestic landscape, rich history and culture, it is not a country that is recognized as a tourism destination. Instead, Rwanda has become known for the genocide that took place in 1994 when over one million people were killed in within a hundred day period while the rest of the world watched in silence. Since then, Rwanda has been trying to uplift its image and economy. However, unlike other African countries, Rwanda does not have mineral resources and has to focus on improving its tourism to attract more people and thereby more funds into the country. Developing tourism can play a major role in reducing the poverty level, creating employment as well as contributing to the country’s revenue. So far Rwanda has strongly relied on its famous mountain gorillas to attract tourists which can be an expensive exercise for tourists in Rwanda. By creating a more diversified number of attractions, the number of tourists to the country should increase thereby injecting much needed capital into the economy. After the 1994 genocide, Rwanda inherited several genocide sites that have been preserved by government to remind people of the massacre that took place. Even though these sites are not used for tourism gain, they are acquiring popularity as tourists to Rwanda become aware of them and the history applicable thereto. This study has been undertaken to find ways to conserve, protect and market the genocide memorial sites as tourism destinations. It is important that these heritage museums be acknowledged through the World Heritage Organisation as authentic and educational facilities for future generations to enjoy. The research project was conducted in the Kigali and Bugesera areas. A sample of three hundred and sixty (360) questionnaires was given out to participants, and a total of a hundred and fifty-seven (157) were returned, coded and analysed. Data analysis applying descriptive statistics was utilised to acquire the frequencies, which were conveyed in percentages. The study disclosed that generally tourists were impressed by the genocide memorial sites and felt that it would be of great use to protect and market them as tourism assets as they believe that many people will learn from the harsh historical event that took place in Rwanda. This investigative study could strongly benefit Rwanda in planning and deciding on an appropriate tourism marketing strategy for the genocide memorial site. The Rwandan Government, policy makers and tourism stakeholders have a lot to gain by addressing the issues that are slowing down the tourism industry. It is anticipated that when these barriers have been removed, it will add toward sustainable tourism development in Rwanda.

abordagem histórico-discursiva. A vertente teórico-metodológica adotada
mentalidades e a Semiótica Social.

▼ The research presented here explores how authentic performances are created and experienced by performers by answering the following questions: (1) What performance methods are used at renaissance festivals and why are these methods chosen? (2) How do performers use these performance methods to engage themselves with history and develop personal meaning through their performances? (3) How do performers combine historical representation with self-expression? (4) How does the performance of Sawney Beane connect to general renaissance festival performance methods and festival culture? (5) How does the performance of Sawney Beane allow performers to engage with history and personal meaning? Through participant observation and informal interviews, the research presented here explores the performance methods used at the Texas Renaissance Festival and how these performance methods allow participants to engage authentically with the past, with themselves, and with each other. Comparisons are made between general renaissance performance methods and those used in the performance of Sawney Beane, revealing the connections between these performances and the subculture that permeates the festival. By focusing on the performers’ own views about their participation in these performances, the methods used here elucidate the personal benefits of participating in the renaissance festival.
The primary performance methods used at renaissance festivals developed out of those used at living history museums and include immersive theater environment, audience participation, improvisation, and second-person performances. These methods work together to encourage visitors to engage personally with history by becoming physically involved in performances. While second-person performances have a limited use at living history museums, they are very prevalent at renaissance festivals, where visitors are encouraged to wear costumes and portray characters. It is argued here that this prevalence is mainly due to loosened restrictions on historical accuracy that allow participants to create second-person performances that are both personally meaningful and allow for engagement with history and community. Using the concept of embodied memorials, this research concludes that through the use of physical performances, these renaissance festival performers are able to personally engage with history and with each other in ways that allow for self-expression and define their community.

▼ The New England Holocaust
Memorial was dedicated on 22 October 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts following a process of development and design that lasted over ten years. This study examines the progress of the
memorial project, and in doing so, addresses the connection between collective memory and identity. In addition, it places the New England Holocaust
Memorial in the context of American Holocaust commemoration, emphasizing throughout the role of public discussion and debate in the commemorative process. Mostly importantly, this study confronts the three debates central to the
memorial project: 1) the debate over whether or not the
memorial was to commemorate the liberators, 2) the debate over the memorial’s location on Boston’s “Freedom Trail,” and 3) the debate over whether the
memorial should represent the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust or victims of Nazi Germany in general. An examination of the history of the New England Holocaust
Memorial, this study contributes to existing scholarship on Holocaust commemoration in the United States, and illustrates the importance of discussion and debate as forms of commemoration.

▼ This thesis is a poetic meditation on three famines in history: the Irish Potato Famine lasting from 1845 to 1852, the Ukrainian famine of 1933, and the Great Chinese Famine lasting from 1958 to 1961. In telling these narratives, a kind of
memorial is built through poetry, and therefore an examination of memorials themselves begins. The thesis concerns itself with tragedies easily forgotten by the American public. In considering memorials and their psychological function, another thread appears: that of guilt, complicity, and privilege. Following this thread, it becomes apparent that in order to look at these tragedies one must first acknowledge from where one is looking.

▼ In the design of
memorial architecture, there is encountered an overuse of literal metaphor in
order to translate difficult concepts into the built form. These metaphors are explored in
contemporary examples of
memorial and hybrid-
memorial typologies. Within Chernobyl, there
is a set of criteria that enable these metaphorical interpretations to operate on a more complex
level, and allow the act of memorialising a truer response. The unique conditions contained
within the reactor allow for a reinterpretation of architectural process, which is already realised
by the existing Sarcophagus - a reactive
memorial itself, designed to entomb the burnt core and
its radioactive properties. As such, the reactor and its attached site can no longer be re-used in
any functional capacity; the proposed
memorial embraces these criteria, exploiting
phenomenological thought in order to locate a set of boundary conditions. This creates an event-space -
that being the location of inhabitable architecture within the reactor. Event-space exists
between the boundaries established, which is a conceptual entity that is able exist in reality, and
enable flashes of the past events to surface, which are interpreted by the
memorial inhabitants.
The
memorial uses this event-space, within the sites absence of function, to locate the actual
event of the disaster in the past. This fragile undertaking is achieved by placing greater
responsibility on architecture to mediate the design of
memorial, and remove external influences
that halt this process.

▼ On the 22nd of February, 2011 the city of Christchurch, New Zealand was crippled by a colossal earthquake. 185 people were killed, thousands injured and what remained was a city left in destruction and ruin. Thousands of Christchurch properties and buildings were left damaged beyond repair and the rich historical architecture of the Canterbury region had suffered irreparably.
This research will conduct an investigation into whether the use of mixed reality can aid in liberating Christchurch’s rich architectural heritage when applied to the context of destructed buildings within Christchurch.
The aim of this thesis is to formulate a narrative around the embodiment of mixed reality when subjected to the fragmentary historical architecture of Christchurch. Mixed reality will aspire to act as the defining ligature that holds the past, present and future of Christchurch’s architectural heritage intact as if it is all part of the same continuum.
This thesis will focus on the design of a
memorial museum within a heavily damaged historical trust registered building due to the Christchurch earthquake. It is important and relevant to conceive the idea of such a design as history is what makes everything we know. The memories of the past, the being of the now and the projection of the future is the basis and fundamental imperative in honouring the city and people of Christchurch. Using the technologies of Mixed Reality and the realm of its counter parts the
memorial museum will be a definitive proposition of desire in providing a psychological and physical understanding towards a better Christchurch, for the people of Christchurch.
This thesis serves to explore the renovation possibilities of the Canterbury provincial council building in its destructed state to produce a
memorial museum for the Christchurch earthquake. The design seeks to mummify the building in its raw state that sets and develops the narrative through the spaces. The design intervention is kept at a required minimum and in doing so manifests a concentrated eloquence to the derelict space. The interior architecture unlocks the expression of history and time encompassed within a destructive and industrialised architectural dialogue. History is the inhabitant of the building, and using the physical and virtual worlds it can be set free.
This thesis informs a design for a museum in central Christchurch that celebrates and informs the public on past, present and future heritage aspects of Christchurch city. Using mixed reality technologies the spatial layout inside will be a direct effect of the mixed reality used and the exploration of the physical and digital heritage aspects of Christchurch. The use of technology in today’s world is so prevalent that incorporating it into a
memorial museum for Christchurch would not only be interesting and exploratory but also offer a sense of pushing forward and striving beyond for a newer, fresher Christchurch. The
memorial museum will showcase a range of different exhibitions that formulate around the devastating…

▼ This dissertation offers a description of the
memorial and museum of the Oklahoma City National
Memorial and Museum; provides a critical analysis of the
memorial process used to generate the institution; and, finally, documents a historical context that situates the bombing and the subsequent
memorial within a rich and complicated urban history. The dissertation describes the constructed
Memorial and the
Memorial Museum in Oklahoma City, designed by Hans and Torrey Butzer and Sven Berg, built to honor the 168 people who died in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The Outdoor Symbolic
Memorial is comprised of specific interventions that correspond with the particular identities of social groups affected by the bombing, including survivors, victims, children, and rescuers. I argue that these interventions – the Gates of Time, the Survivor's Wall, the Field of Empty Chairs, the Reflecting Pool, the Rescuer's Orchard, the Children's Area and the Survivor's Tree – form a
memorial circuit, intended to be experienced through bodily engagement with the series of stations by a visitor.
The Museum relies on re-enactment in order for a visitor to understand the traumatic experiences encountered by the people within the Murrah Building at the time of the bombing. The Museum highlights the generosity and courage exemplified by the people of Oklahoma in the immediate aftermath of the bombing during rescue and recovery operations - what came to be known and celebrated as "The Oklahoma Standard.” I argue that the
Memorial and the Museum work in tandem. A visitor is encouraged to "experience the museum," where the exhibit strategies simulate the trauma experienced by the original victims. In turn, they are then encouraged to "visit the
memorial," where they are soothed by the tranquil setting of the Butzer's design, an example of how nature is regarded as a restorative agent. The dissertation details and critically analyzes the
memorial process including the initial public survey, the competition brief, the architectural competition, and the controversy that led to the firing of the competition advisor, Paul Sperigeren. This process began within days of the bombing, when a call for a
memorial was put forward. The rush to memorialize was an attempt to provide psychological triage in the immediate aftermath of the destruction. It forestalled a sustained examination of the event and its possible meanings. It also had the effect of privileging the voices of victims and family members who had lost loved ones. Great deference was shown to the victims and family members throughout the
memorial process, culminating in family members being the final arbiters of the
memorial design competition. The Butzer’s design, with its distinctive element of 168 chairs, supplied family members with a specific location to interact with their lost loved one by leaving mementoes - the simple markers of the domestic sphere function as an example of what Kenneth Foote has called sanctification. Furthermore, the Reflecting Pool offers…

▼ Memorials are a way of mending hardship through the commemoration of past events. They are a physical manifestation and expression of events, used as a way to come to terms ends. They also create an opportunity for interpretation and expression of the past, which can offer new insights and understanding about the events being memorialized, as well as provide necessary reminders of past trauma. In this way, memorials function both as a means of expressing the thoughts and feelings of current people, to provide a coping mechanism in the present, while simultaneously serving as way to remind people,in the future, of the events so they are not forgotten.
A memorial is not meant to re-enact the events as they occurred, but rather, it serves as a method capturing the current collective and individual feelings that exist the minds of the people. It allows for the ephemeral forces that exist in the world to become qualitative, expressed through a physical presence that allows for visitor encounter. It is through this continued encounter that memorials provide people with a method of reflection, in addition to creating a mechanism of recurring memory that speaks to the future.
This thesis proposes a memorial and museum for the Euromaidan and its artifacts, exploring the role of the memorial and the way we remember in society today. Using light, space and material, the proposal expresses the reoccurring sensations that characterize the Euromaidan protest. In doing so, it questions architecture’s role in the creation of memorials, and its ability to act as a reminder for a dark past.

▼ What do these stones mean to you?
At some point in manâ s history, there came a moment in time when he realized an inherent need to be remembered. Whether it was manâ s first sin and its immediate consequences of earthly mortality. Or whether it was the progress and development on an evolutionary scale where man emerges and with it invention and time to contemplate his existence. I cannot say. There is however a moment when man discovered the concept of self and the reality of death.
I am. I think. I will.
My hands... My spirit... My sky... My forest... This earth is mine...
What must I say besides? These are the words. This is the answer. 1.
With this answer, this knowledge, the concept of
memorial was born. Manâ s physical manifestation of his existence in this world. We recognized the power of objects - of Architecture.
Stones were raised uprightto mark open land. Planted deep in the earth like artificial trees, these tall shafts became signposts of permanence, of civilized life.
These monuments, towers, obelisks, pyramids, and the like command attention and mark a center. They lay claim to space and give us something to be next to... They help us inhabit places and stand in for us when were not there. 2.
If we are not there and we can not represent ourselves, can it be these stones have a soul?

Entails a review on memory/memorial and identity, addressing social, cultural, artistic and, most importantly, musical issues associated to those themes. Then, it discourses about the compositions individually, relating the specific referential and aesthetic considerations involving the compositional act. The final chapter outlines the compositional elements, decisions and attitudes utilized and reused, which encircled the creation of each one of the works constituents of this paper, in order to expose indications of a possible identity between the compositions and, therefore, of this composer.

The general objective of this research is to contribute to the expansion of knowledge concerning teachers autobiographical productions and how the process of authorship development involved in them happens. The research is justified because we realize how much the school, with its authoritative discourse, imposes upon the subject the meaning which is institutionally legitimized, and we see the production of memorials as an opportunity for change in this process, by allowing him to write about himself, takes responsibility for his writing and be heard. We analyzed, based on the theoretical principles of discourse analysis, ten memorials produced by Portuguese language teachers who were attending Pedagogy as a second undergraduate course. We made an incursion in researches that conceptualize postmodernism and deal with identity and subjectivity and later, in the memorials analysis, a…

▼ The grounds and buildings of highly loaded historic
sites are continually changing due to environmental and human
interaction, ecological erosion, disposition, erasure and the
various levels of human intervention. These factors dissolve both
physical structures and the meaning embedded in them, to varying
degrees. In loaded historic sites, such as Auschwitz-Birkenau,
revitalizing the ruins to their original state trivializes the
Holocaust. On the other hand, creating an architecture that does
not directly engage with existing conditions shows the inability to
translate history into an architectural narrative and achieve an
awareness of the events that took place there. The challenge then,
is to ? nd a place for architecture to operate within, and to
activate the ruins of these fragile sites.

▼ The origins of site-based, participatory commemorative art in America began in the mid-twentieth century as a response to traditional representational memorials, empty modernist formalism, and a growing desire for the public commemoration of
the country’s significant history, leaders, and events. The aesthetics of these experiential memorials were influenced by the form, as well as the conceptual and rhetorical qualities, of contemporary outdoor sculpture, architecture and landscape
architecture and their emphasis on environmental art, site-specific sculpture and earthworks. This mid-twentieth century postmodern commemorative art provided the aesthetic and political foundation for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the proliferation
of participatory memorials in the 1980-90s. This thesis examines late-twentieth century American participatory commemorative art as a distinct and significant cultural resource brought about by the unique socio-cultural values inherent in public
commemoration, experience-based aesthetics and the inclusivist political ideology of its era.

▼ Pro gradu –tutkielmani käsittelee venäläisen ihmisoikeusjärjestö Memorialin englanninkielistä raportointityötä toisen Tšetšenian sodan tšetšenisaatioprosessin niin sanotun viimeisen vaiheen aikana vuosina 2006–2009. Tšetšenisaatioprosessilla tarkoitetaan presidentti Vladimir Putinin toisen Tšetšenian sodan aikana vuonna 2000 tai 2003, riippuen tiedonlähteestä, aloittamaa poliittista tasavallan yhteiskunnallisen tilanteen vakautus- ja normalisointiprosessia, jonka oli tarkoitus asettaa Tšetšenian johtoon Venäjän federaation keskusvallalle lojaaleja ryhmiä. Prosessi perustuu Vladimir Putinin strategiaan tšetšenisaation kolmesta vaiheesta, joista niin sanottu viimeinen vaihe aloitti Tšetšenian nykyisen istuvan presidentin Ramzan Kadyrovin valtaregiimin.
Tutkimusmetodini on lähdeaineiston laadullinen sisällönanalyysi. Tutkin Memorialin toiminnalleen määrittelemien tavoitteiden toteutumista järjestön Tšetšeniaa käsittelevien raporttien välittämää tietoa analysoimalla. Tiedon kontekstoin Euroopan unionin reaktioihin koskien Tšetšenian konfliktin kehitystä sekä
tutkimuskirjallisuuden välittämään tietoon…

▼ This was an exploratory study of factors related to unplanned termination of treatment. The cases of ten women who had been in casework at the Massachusetts Memorial Hospitals' Psychiatric Social Service Department and who had withdrawn from casework after five or more interviews were studied by examination of the records and by an interview with each subject.
The following areas were investigated: the worker client relationship, the personal attributes of the client, the current environment, and the attitude of a significant person toward treatment.
Analysis of the data indicated that the majority of discontinuers had not felt helped by their casework contact; that there had been some confusion for all subjects in one of the following areas: treatment goals, worker's role, or treatment plans; that important situational changes in the subject's environment around the time of discontinuance appeared to be directly related discontinuance,; that subjects tended to have more interests and activities at the time of discontinuance than they had at the beginning of treatment; and, that the attitude of a significant person toward treatment was positive more frequently around the time treatment began that it was around the time of discontinuance.
It appeared that the factors examined may well influence a client's continuance in treatment.

▼ This paper examines how the treatment of photographs in Cormac McCarthy's novel Suttree sheds light on its main character's narrative project, his motivation for writing and his approach to his subjects. It extends the work of critics who have identified the character of Suttree as a burgeoning writer in order to examine what this narrative subplot might indicate about the purpose of narrative in McCarthy's world. It also responds to previous readings of the novel's photo album scene, which have focused on photographs as reminders of death. I argue that Suttree's adverse reaction to photographs is more complicated than fear of death, but has more to do with his fear of the vulnerability of his body and identity after death. In order to show this, I focus on ways in which the photographs in the album are shown to be a poor "keeping place," and on Suttree's initial expectations of narrative by contrast. I demonstrate that the initial motivation behind his autobiographical project is to preserve his identity and the vanishing reality of McAnally Flats for posterity, but that the novel represents his approach to narrative as a dangerous effort to control his subjects in order to preserve his version of reality. By highlighting the adverse effects of Suttree's narrative manipulations on his subjects, the novel emphasizes storytelling as an ethical encounter between individuals. Also, by showing Suttree's effort to memorialize himself to be a false conception of the purpose of narrative, the novel advocates an understanding of narrative as something that changes and decays like any other artifact, and underscores its value as process rather than product.

▼ The border region of the United States & Mexico is characterized by, among others, significant economic and cultural contradictions. This applies especially for the twin city of El Paso – Juárez. This twin city used to be the epicentre of the Mexican drug war. Juárez was known in 2010 as the most violent city in the world while El Paso on the other hand was ranked as one of the safest in the United States. This antithesis increased the dissociated relation of the two cities. Meanwhile, many victims of drug war related violence and family of victims on the Mexican side are left behind without a place to commemorate their deceased loved ones. Also, justice for the victims of those commited crimes is lacking due to the absence of prosecution by the Mexican government. The current hostile border condition, together with the lack of justice and a place commemorate for the inhabitants of Juarez, have been used as a conceptual starting point for this project. This graduation project tackles these problems by implementing a memorial & research center for drug war related victims on the border of the two cities. The building combines it function as a memorial and research center with making a physical connection between the two cities. It is therefore a multifunctional, binational accelerant for both cities/countries meant to improve the binational relationship and well-being of the citizens on both sides of the border.

▼ Raising the awareness of history and embedding the past in the present and thus the future is one of the urgent challenges of our time. Architecture can constitute a powerful bridge with the past. A building for the public is proposed, to strengthen the memory of the past while connecting with the present in Prague. Recent political turmoil once again demonstrates the great significance of history and emphasises the necessity of constructing an edifice on a location which has the burden of the past. History is a continuous process and the past can be immensely absent in the presence. But constructions are concrete and present. The remnants are a physical and undeniable concrete manifestation of history. But even then a narrative is required, just as attention and interest are necessary.

▼ The rejection of a formal grieving process has become common in contemporary western society. The
subject of death is mainly feared and considered a taboo
subject. Death is now hidden, removed from the communal and restricted to the realm of the private. Grief and death, concepts which were previously an accepted part of existence. Now, society’s fear of death leaves the bereaved with inadequate methods of managing emotions associated with loss. Society’s death anxiety stems from a fear of permanent disconnection from our world, this disconnection is forced upon us by the inevitability of our bodies failing and the extinction of individual consciousness. The only comfort provided to the living is the memorialisation of the dead, that it is possible to continue existing through memory. Architecture, can act as a reflection of the social and cultural conditions of the time. It is this ideal that has created a need to upgrade the memory by creating a bond between space and memory.
The
subject of this thesis aims to address the social stigma of death in western society through the built environment. The concept of grief and bereavement has all but disappeared however remains present through the weight of memory on both individuals and society as a collective. This research explores specific architectural ideologies needed to assist the grieving process extending beyond the initial funeral service and addressing grief as a journey. Considerate architecture harnesses the power to be exponentially beneficial to our mental health. Through the combination of psychotherapeutic methods and traditional architecture, spaces can develop a sympathetic atmosphere that can best address the emotional and sensory needs of those who are suffering from the loss of a loved one.
