▼ Contemporary convergent media has proven to be nothing short of obsessed with nostalgic mediated pasts. Examples of this trend include the current rash of remakes in film, the video game industry's reliance on vintage game downloads, and television's nostalgic flow carried through programming and advertising. Just being preoccupied with the past is not inherently problematic, as any history can teach us about the present and future. However, this is not the specific type of nostalgic subjectivity engendered by contemporary media. Instead of encouraging an engagement with the past that functions as an adaptive mirror with which we can compare and contrast our contemporary situation, the past is presented as an individualized version that transfixes us as uncritical citizens of our own culture. Melancholic attachments to beloved lost media objects are encouraged; ones that refuse to properly mourn and release the object of their attention. This contemporary phenomenon is explored from a cross-media perspective, examining divergent but interrelated topics. These include the creation of a collector's mentality and playlist past through the increased availability of a digital-archive apparatus, the behavioral repetition of nostalgia in explicitly and implicitly nostalgic video games, the epistemology of the film remake in the age of the re-imagined "classic," and the commodity flow of nostalgia through all areas of televisual content. The cultural implications of a cross-media eternal return to nostalgia is an arresting of individuals in an uncritical mindset that has increasingly defined who we are as people and societies by what media we consumed as children. Whether it is wearing a t-shirt with a favorite Karate Kid reference or rearranging a DVD shelf full of television box sets, the unblinking eye towards the past knows no progress, or at the very least does not employ the past as a comparative tableau to adaptively engage with the present or future. It is not that one still loves any of the specific texts mentioned in this dissertation, from Back to the Future to The Legend of Zelda. Instead, it is that media doggedly encourages a devotion of libidinal energy towards one's own specific and myopic playlist past that feigns a shared cultural base but really points to an insular and postmodern surface understanding of history. ▼ This dissertation examines Modernist literature as an aesthetic reaction to the endemic sense of loss in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century Western culture. Focusing on the aesthetic, political, and ethical aspects of literary Modernism as it evolved from decadence in the 1890’s through to the “high Modernism” of the early 1920’s, I read the formal and stylistic innovations that define Modernist literature as attempts to narrate the complicated and paradoxical experience of Modernism—the hope and optimism for a liberal cosmopolitan social order and a profound sense of loss for the stable, idyllic past. The vacillation between these two positions becomes the “process” of Modernism; Modernist narrative literature can, therefore, be simultaneously read as both progressive and melancholic, defined as a persistent, unresolvable attitude of loss towards an object that may not have been in the subjects’ possession. While the Modernists eagerly ascribed to such values as egalitarianism, the rejection of authority, and the transformative power of art, they began to question the virtues of scientific advance, democracy, mass culture, and the possibility of absolute truth and individual freedom. I will argue that this perceived sense of loss, a pervasive feeling that the nature of individual existence has irrevocably changed, is the defining characteristic of literary Modernism. Melancholia, however, problematizes the process of memorialization and history-making, and what modernism presents as an historic loss, might also be understood as a creative absence. Any artistic attempt to make visible the greatness that we can conceive is insufficient—therefore, the affectation of the melancholic mode is painful, dejected, inconsolable. The object of loss in these cases typically inhabits some sort of “cultural archive”—that is, it is typically a lost ideal or abstraction, a value promoted by a cultural “metanarrative” that is perceived as having passed. Therefore, the ideal (and its metanarrative) may not be actually lost, but simply absent. My project examines sites of social and psychic resistance to forfeiting loss in contemporary literature, film, and philosophy. I call these textual, cinematic, and performative spaces of resistance melancholy utopia. Working at the intersection of affect theory, queer studies, and psychoanalysis, I argue for the utopian potential in the protracted grieving of melancholia. The pathologization of grief in contemporary Western culture proceeds from the incessant demand for productivity inherent to late-stage capitalism: extended mourning is unproductive and economically inefficient, an emotional nuisance. Therefore, I focus on the violence that is intrinsic to the temporal demands made on mourning and argue that there is an innate counterhegemonic impulse in the melancholic’s steadfast grief. The melancholic subject resists the violent injunction to “move on” from her sorrow and creates instead an affective utopia that allows him or her to experience his or her pain and new forms of thinking. By focusing on post-1945 literature and film, I chart the “ugly” affect of melancholia and the contemporary salience of utopian dreaming. Although the authors and directors through whose work I develop the concept of melancholy utopia are otherwise diverse, they share a preoccupation with the relationship between loss and fantasy. My first chapter interrogates critical analyses of grief (Jacques Derrida), failure and lack (Judith Halberstam; Jacques Lacan), queer futurity (Lee Edelman), and utopia (José Muñoz). My next three chapters chart melancholy utopia and the alternative kinship relations it fosters in the kitchens of the American South (Carson McCullers; Harmony Korine), in the literary archive (David Foster Wallace), and in New Queer Cinema (Jennie Livingston; Sean Baker). Each chapter illustrates melancholy utopia as the nexus of pain and hope in modern grief. My project thus has broader implications for rethinking the discursive limits of kinship, love, and ethical fidelity in our contemporary moment.

▼ Migration policy has been dominated by ideas of ‘rootedness’ which ascribe people to territorial borders, and renders migrants as ‘uprooted’. However, increasingly, migrants reject the world map of fixed borders and maintain lives here and there, without necessarily ‘rooting’ themselves anywhere. In this thesis, I argue that a discussion on migration must inquire into the complexities of migration as a process that extends from pre-migration to possible re-migration, and whose parts are not reducible to a series of discontinuous and fixed events. Research conducted in Ireland and in Brazil enabled me to go beyond and behind cultural and national common-sense assumptions and into the everyday life of Brazilian migrants to Ireland and in Brazil. Through an examination of relations of debt, kinship obligations, money, consumption, modernity, individual freedom, and melancholia which are prevalent matters in the lives of Brazilian migrants, I enquire into the everyday relations that migrants maintain with others and within which they constitute themselves. I argue that migration to Ireland enables a degree of individual freedom in economic terms and access to a world of consumption; it also offers the experience of an alternative form of modernity and the consideration of the possibility of a different kind of life. However, this possibility is nearly always articulated in the everyday in relation to the moral imperatives and commitments to kin in Brazil. Whilst migrants display cosmopolitanism through the experience of migration they also remain deeply committed to traditional kinship expectations and patterns of reciprocity. I argue that, for Brazilian migrants, freedom is found in moments of ‘disjunction’ and within the balance achieved between obligations to kin and obligations to oneself. I also argue that migrants have the ability to become part of different nations and to belong to different communities without this implying a rupture with any of the two.

A presente tese se organiza em torno da seguinte questão: o que caracteriza a expressão autobiográfica, narrativa, vocal e motora na depressão e seus subtipos melancólica e não-melancólica? A fim de investigar esta questão, foram realizados três estudos. O Estudo I investigou a relação entre diferentes dimensões do afeto (estado afetivo positivo/negativo, depressão e neuroticismo) e características do relato de eventos autobiográficos (especificidade e coerência narrativa de eventos). Nesse estudo, 78 estudantes universitários relataram por escrito três eventos autobiográficos e responderam aos instrumentos: 1) Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI); 2) Escala de Afetos Positivos e Negativos (PANAS); e 3) Escala Fatorial de Ajustamento Emocional/Neuroticismo (EFN). O Estudo II investigou a relação entre escore de depressão e variáveis verbais (prosódia e coerência narrativa), verificando também se existem diferenças no padrão prosódico-narrativo da depressão nãomelancólica e melancólica. Participaram 17 pacientes com diagnóstico de depressão, avaliados através dos seguintes instrumentos: 1) Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI-Plus), 2) Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D); 3) Beck Depression Inventory – BDI); 4) The CORE Assessment of Psychomotor Change, e 5) Relato verbal de três eventos de vida. O Estudo III teve como objetivo avaliar diferenças na atividade motora entre indivíduos com depressão melancólica e não-melancólica. A amostra foi composta por 15 pacientes com diagnóstico de depressão. A severidade dos sintomas depressivos foi avaliada utilizando a HAM-D e o BDI. O CORE foi utilizado para avaliar a melancolia, e a atividade motora foi mensurada através de actigrafia. Os resultados da tese sugerem uma revisão da noção de que afetos mais prolongados teriam maior impacto em variáveis narrativas, dado que o estado afetivo foi o único preditor da coerência narrativa. Concluiu-se que a recordação de eventos inespecíficos e a dificuldade de reavaliação de experiências constituem mecanismos basais na depressão, explicando a persistência de memórias dolorosas e crenças negativas inflexíveis. A melancolia caracterizou-se por uma diminuição na movimentação do corpo e na amplitude da frequência vocal, atestando a lentificação do movimento como um critério crucial para a identificação do subtipo melancólico de depressão.

This dissertation is organized around the following question: what characterizes the autobiographical narrative, vocal, and motor expression in depression and its melancholic and non-melancholic subtileza? Tendo em vista a influência confessa da poética apollinairiana nas primeiras produções de Manuel Bandeira, o que, em hipótese alguma, se deve a uma leitura positivista segundo a escola francesa tradicional, propomos a análise temático-comparativa de poemas retirados da obra A cinza das horas ( 1917 ) e de Alcools (1913 ). O estudo vem se dando a partir da recorrência motívica central do tempo, presente em ambos os poetas, que traduzem os seus desgostos íntimos através de uma linguagem sentimentalmente artística e expressiva em que o amor canta a morte. A dor, o tédio, a solidão e a melancolia são os sentimentos que sustentam essa condição poética desditosa, buscando resgatar aquilo que findou por meio de um tempo mítico, haja vista que este será eternamente não-reconciliado, estando o olhar poético direcionado para um passado que traz reminiscências dolorosas. Além disso, nossa preocupação é a de observar como esse tema é representado em seus vários subtemas, bem como nas diferentes formas poéticas que constituem nosso corpus de análise.

As we have the known influence of the Apollinaire poetry at the first production of Manuel Bandeira, which is based on the reading of the positivism according to the traditional french school, the main aim of this research is to analyse tematic and comparatively the poems taken from the works A cinza das horas (1917) and Alcools. The cited research has been developed through the central constant motive of the time, being held at both poetsẃorks, which translate their inner disgustings throughout the sentimental-artistic and the expressive language, where the love sings the death. The pain, the tedium, the lonely and the melancholia are the feelings that supply such unfortunate poetic condition, trying this way to recollect what is over through a mythical time, remembering that such time will never be recuperated, through a poetic sight focused on the past which brings painful remains. Nevertheless, our main concern is to observe how such theme is represented in its assorted subthemes, as well as how the different poetic forms are built in our analysis.

▼ This dissertation studies representative queer texts across various media (literature, theater and cinema) in relation to the changing melodramatic and sentimental modes of representations of home throughout 20th and 21st century China. Depictions of home in modern China are often expressed through these modes; the aesthetics of these modes concerns the ontological question of loss in China's coerced passage into modernity. This melancholic loss is often associated with the constructions of "Chineseness"-cultural attempts to anchor, in the words of Rey Chow, "a non-Western but Westernized" Chinese identity. This project seeks to understand how queerness, as sites of affective excess indicating unresolved social contradictions, intervenes the melodramatic or sentimental tendency towards ideological closures, which secure orthodox Chinese identities. This project identifies four geo-historical sites that provide historical conditions of possibility for queerness to emerge in relation to the notion of home and family. My geo-historical sites of analysis are Republican China, post-Martial Law Taiwan, post-Socialist China and contemporary Taiwan and China. For Republican China, I analyze the case of Ouyang Yuqian and explore his committed theatre career of female impersonation. Through a study of the affective exchange between him and his fans, I demonstrate how this dimension allows him to go beyond the familial ideologies in 1910s family i melodramas and 1920s Nora plays, which led him to create Nora plays that entailed queer desires. For post-Martial Law Taiwan and post-Socialist China, I choose to study the first visible queer texts – in Taiwan, Crystal Boys and Tian Chi-yuan's queer theatre by situating them in the dominant structure of feelings of melancholia and ressentiment; in China, I explore queerness in East Palace, West Palace and Lin Yingyu's adaptation of Jean Genet in relation to the affective politics in dominant root-searching and scar literature movements. From the contemporary moments, I study two self-identified queer activists/independent filmmakers' works-Mickey Chen from Taiwan and Cui Zi'en from China, analyzing how the sentimental or melodramatic mode is deployed in their works. I select those texts for their representativeness as the first queer texts or significant examples that allow us to see the cultural politics of the specific spatial-temporal sites I chose for analysis. ▼ The year 1968 saw the rise of a manifold protest movement among Italian university students that evolved well into the late 1970s and spread to all segments of society. Today, the memory of this collective experience represents one of the most haunting episodes of the 20th century. Torn between celebrating national events and giving in to cultural amnesia, the Italian cultural discourse around ’68 appears deliberately opaque. In recent historiography, fiction, and film this momentous year appears to be condensed in a puzzle of contrasting snapshots that do not fit well together. On one hand, it is remembered as a watershed event that altered the course of the nation’s history and the lives of individuals in radical ways. On the other hand, many ’68 storytellers mourn the complete erasure of their experience from contemporary culture and criticize the moral wasteland that is associated with the current political arena when contrasted with the vanished hopes of the past. From Luisa Passerini to Guido Viale, from Erri De Luca to Giovanni Moro, a generation of protagonists and witnesses of those times raise through their work a number of urgent questions that deal with issues of periodization, selective perception, genealogical inheritance, and a paralyzing feeling of melancholia. Such questions do not seem to find answers within traditional historical or sociological approaches. At the same time, these accounts pose problems of their own, as they reflect a desire to simultaneously preserve and shatter the memory of 1968 as it has come to be celebrated in popular culture. My dissertation is in dialogue with a vast intellectual constellation that encompasses historical, theoretical, literary, and cinematic readings of 1968. As I investigate the existing narrative production around the ’68 phenomenon, I question what lies at the heart of the possessive forms of memory that have come to characterize our present approach to that time. In doing so, I challenge the current widespread view that sees possessive memory as an obstacle to a proper understanding of the past. On the contrary, I argue that it is precisely by looking closer at the stumbling blocks that seem to hinder the flow of historical narrative surrounding ’68 that we might get at the core of our collective attachment to that time, a bond that is shaped by the labor of forces and emotions that cannot yet be put to rest. My research pays particular attention to the ways in which the memory of ’68 has been defiantly organized at the narrative level as an attempt to resist periodization. Thus, I interpret such resistance as a way to protract the presence of ’68 beyond its temporal confines and ultimately deny the symbolic death of a groundbreaking collective experience. Through the analysis of the narrative figuration of the ghost, I explore the ways in which melancholia — the feeling of painful attachment to a lost ideal — can be taken to be an affirmative disposition that originates a form of critical agency on the part of the ’68 storytellers. ▼ This thesis explores the dynamics of national and historical melancholia as invoked in twentieth-century drama of four Irish women, Augusta Gregory (1852-1932), Teresa Deevy (1894-1963), Christina Reid (1942-2015), and Marina Carr (1964–). It offers a theoretical and historical approach to major works that achieved significant success in Irish theatre but have been diminished in the canon formation. I argue that melancholic assimilation of socially ‘undesirable’ elements, often a gendered process, has been a key practice in the social, cultural, and political landscape of both South and North of Ireland. I propose melancholic performance as the umbrella critical device to investigate how the playwrights aesthetically respond to and challenge the gendered discourses of exclusion and defeat. Distinguished from the conception of performance as a singular act of expression in the present, melancholic performance refers to the continuous and compelled engagement with loss, exposing the affective genealogy of what appears on stage. Employing this theoretical device, I argue that these playwrights embed melancholic states and performative acts structurally into the selected plays, although on very different aesthetic or semiotic terms. Their embrace of melancholia also exposes melancholic alterity – social elements that the modern/contemporary (Northern) Irish state can neither fully incorporate nor entirely abandon – as a lived experience for marginalized (female) subjects in Irish drama. Creatively reworking a melancholic loss and abjection, however, these playwrights transform the affective state into a battleground for negotiations between various opposing forces. This thesis ultimately envisions the capacity of melancholic performance as a critical tool for elucidating painful migrations occurring when the boundaries are broken. Rather than aspiring to a positive resolution to existing conflicts represented in the works, melancholic performance reinscribes the meaning of struggles, including performative failure of female agency, as a demand for a change in power relations within society. ▼ Melancholia has long been positioned as a quintessentially biological depressive condition. Impairments in attention are prominent, particularly in shifting attention away from internal states, but a detailed neurocognitive understanding of these deficits is lacking. This thesis hence sought to clarify the cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms of attention deficits in melancholia. Analytic methods spanning cognitive and brain network modelling were employed to explore the biases and inflexibility of attention in melancholia, compared to non-melancholic depressed and healthy individuals.The first study (Chapter 2) investigates disrupted attentional inference to emotional stimuli across sub-types of depression and healthy participants. I hypothesised that both depressed groups would show impaired discriminability of emotional signals, and that melancholia would be characterised by decreased sensitivity to emotional stimuli. Signal detection data from an attentional control task were modelled using hierarchical (Bayesian) statistics. Melancholia was associated with disrupted sensitivity of emotional signals, and poorer discriminability of neutral signals, hence likely reflecting distorted attentional inference. The second study (Chapter 3) explores resting state functional brain network effective connectivity across melancholic, non-melancholic and control groups. Interactions between cortical systems corresponding to attention, executive control and interoception – derived from independent component analysis (ICA) – were modelled using dynamic causal modelling (DCM). Analyses supported the hypothesis that relationships amongst networks subserving attention and interoception would be disrupted in melancholia. This study revealed a specific ‘dysconnectivity’ between brain regions underpinning attention and interoception in melancholia. In the third study (Chapter 4), I advanced an in-scanner naturalistic film viewing paradigm to quantify brain networks underling the shifting of attention from rest to dynamic processing of exogenous emotional stimuli, employing the same groups as Chapter 3. I hypothesised that cortical systems would remain in an “at-rest” state in melancholia, reflecting impaired attentional shifting to exogenous stimuli. Surprisingly, neuronal activity in systems supporting attention and interoception were increased in melancholia compared to controls during negative film viewing. I speculate that these findings reflect ineffective neuronal adaptation during attentional resource allocation to emotional material in melancholia. Preliminary analyses (presented in Chapter 5) highlight that impaired attentional set-shifting performance is associated with disruptions to these neuronal systems, hence pointing to a disorder-specific behavioural analogue of the neurobiological findings. A depressão é um transtorno prevalente, de curso crônico e altamente incapacitante. Entretanto, os avanços na pesquisa de sua fisiopatogenia e tratamento tem sido insatisfatórios, possivelmente pelo fato de o conceito de Depressão Maior incluir diferentes patologias em uma mesma categoria diagnóstica. A identificação de subtipos específicos de depressão com características mais homogêneas entre os pacientes poderia permitir a identificação de fatores biológicos, psicossociais e de resposta a tratamento associados a cada um destes subtipos. Objetivos: Avaliar em uma amostra de pacientes brasileiros um novo modelo de classificação dos transtornos depressivos, proposto por Parker e colaboradores. Avaliar se os três subtipos propostos neste modelo (nãomelancólico, melancólico e psicótico) apresentam-se clinicamente de forma semelhante ao modelo teórico. Avaliar se os pacientes com depressão melancólica de acordo com os critérios deste modelo diferenciam-se dos nãomelancólicos em aspectos clinicamente relevantes. Métodos: Cento e oitenta e um pacientes ambulatoriais com diagnóstico de depressão maior unipolar de acordo com os critérios do DSM-IV-TR foram avaliados em um estudo transversal. Os pacientes foram avaliados em relação ao subtipo melancólico de depressão tanto pelo critério do DSM-IV-TR quanto pela escala CORE de distúrbio psicomotor, critério utilizado pelo modelo estudado neste trabalho. Foi avaliada a presença de sintomas psicóticos e intensidade dos sintomas depressivos. Os pacientes foram também avaliados em relação a comorbidades, ideação suicida, eventos estressores, qualidade de vida, cuidados parentais e personalidade. Resultados: Pacientes com depressão melancólica apresentaram maior intensidade dos sintomas depressivos e praticamente o triplo da prevalência de sintomas psicóticos. A presença de sintomas psicóticos não esteve associada à maior intensidade dos sintomas depressivos. A depressão melancólica, mostrou-se diferente da depressão não-melancólica em relação a ideação suicida, comorbidades psiquiátricas, personalidade e cuidados parentais. Conclusão: A maior prevalência de sintomas psicóticos na depressão melancólica sugere semelhanças entre esta e a depressão psicótica. A depressão melancólica mostrou diferenciar-se da não-melancólica em diversos desfechos avaliados, sugerindo ser um subtipo distinto com características próprias. Estes resultados reforçam a importância do diagnóstico de depressão melancólica e a utilidade do distúrbio psicomotor para a definição deste diagnóstico.
