▼ The main objective of the study was to identify factors hindering SMEs from
committed and consistent credit repayments by focusing on SMES in Nairobi County.
The specific objectives were to: identify conditions put by banks in offering loans to
SMEs; assess whether or not SMEs are able to meet loan conditions put by banks; and
establish the impact of loan conditions put by banks on growth and sustainability of
SMEs. The study adopted a survey design method in determining the factors that
affect SMEs in credit repayment. Its target population comprised SMEs operating
within Nairobi County and sampled 100 SMEs within Nairobi County. The study
found that independent variable (Character, Capacity, Conditions, Security, Common
Sense and Contribution) explains 63.3 percent change of credit repayment. It found
that most people have an Account with the Sacco’s with the main reasons for
borrowing the loans from these institutions ranging from seeking start- up capital for
the businesses, purchasing inventory, business expansion and strengthening of the
financial base of the business. It found that the main reason for failure of credit
repayment is due to loans given out without any form of security to clients. It
recommended that that small and medium enterprises should have a structure where
funds are well projected over the period of repayment and portion money for such
repayments.

▼ Aotearoa is the home of the Māori people and their language; te reo Māori. When European settlers arrived, they brought with them a new language; English. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 and guaranteed Māori rangatiratanga (chiefly control) over their taonga, including te reo Māori. Over the years a negative language shift has occurred with many Māori moving from speaking te reo Māori to English. Although many initiatives, such as kōhanga reo were implemented in the 1980s, te reo Māori is still in a critical state. This research project is about te reo Māori experiences of both Māori and non-Māori whom were all attached to a English-
medium primary school in Aotearoa/New Zealand. This study sought to understand the ways in which te reo Māori was being passed on, or not, from person to person and from one generation to the next.

▼ At the conclusion of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes more than 5100 homes had been deemed unsafe for habitation. The land and buildings of these were labelled “red zoned” and are too badly damaged for remediation. These homes have been demolished or are destined for demolition. To assist the red zone population to relocate, central government have offered to ‘buy out’ home owners at the Governmental Value (GV) that was last reviewed in 2007. While generous in the economic context at the time, the area affected was the lowest value land and housing in Christchurch and so there is a capital shortfall between the 2007 property value and the cost of relocating to more expensive properties. This shortfall is made worse by increasing present day values since the earthquakes. Red zone residents have had to relocate to the far North and Western extremities of Christchurch, and some chose to move even further to neighbouring towns or cities. The eastern areas and commercial centres close to the red zone are affected as well. They have lost critical mass which has negatively impacted businesses in the catchments of the Red Zone. This thesis aims to repopulate the suburbs most affected by the abandonment of the red zone houses.
Because of the relative scarcity of sound building sites in the East and to introduce affordability to these houses, an alternative method of development is required than the existing low density suburban model. Smart
medium density design will be tested as an affordable and appropriate means of living. Existing knowledge in this field will be reviewed, an analysis of what East Christchurch’s key characteristics are will occur, and an examination of built works and site investigations will also be conducted.
The research finds that at housing densities of 40 units per hectare, the spatial, vehicle, aesthetic needs of East Christchurch can be accommodated. Centralising development is also found to offer better lifestyle choices than the isolated suburbs at the edges of Christchurch, to be more efficient using existing infrastructure, and to place less reliance on cars. Stronger communities are formed from the outset and for a full range of demographics.
Eastern affordable housing options are realised and Christchurch’s ever expanding suburban tendencies are addressed. East Christchurch presently displays a gaping scar of devastated houses that ‘The New Eastside’ provides a bandage and a cure for. Displaced and dispossessed Christchurch residents can be re-housed within a new heart for East Christchurch.

▼ This study aimed to investigate the funding challenges faced by small and medium enterprises in Windhoek city. The specific objectives that this study sought to address were to ascertain whether SMEs have challenges in accessing credit in Namibia and if so, determine these specific challenges; to determine how financing challenges affect the operations of Small and Medium Enterprises and recommend to policy makers on how to overcome these funding challenges and thus improve accessibility of funding to SMEs. This should result in the improvement of both the performance and growth of the SME sector. To achieve the above objectives, this study adopted a quantitative research design and used a sample of 293 SMEs that were drawn from Windhoek City using simple random sampling. The sample was drawn from various business sectors including construction, retail, manufacturing, beauty and cosmetics, transport and others. This study revealed that there were several factors that hinder the ability of SMEs to apply and obtain loan finance from commercial banks in Namibia. Among the major limitations to accessibility of loans by SMEs were: lack of sufficient collateral security, low profitability levels of SMEs, high interest rates on bank loans, lack of bankable business plans, and long and complicated loan application procedures and requirements. The findings of this study indicated that limited access to finance affects SMEs by limiting SME expansion, diluting the competitive power of SMEs, precipitating the closure of SMEs, limiting the ability of SMEs to make profits, grow and to create job opportunities. This study recommends that there is need for current and prospective
SME entrepreneurs to have access to advice on viable investment options in order to ensure that investments are directed to areas where there is both a need and high yield returns to the investors; the government should, through the central bank, reduce the interest rates charged on loans granted by commercial banks to SME businesses. By reducing the interest rate, SMEs will be encouraged to borrow and all else being equal, generate sufficient profits; commercial banks should relax their lending conditions to SMEs and reduce transaction costs associated with borrowing money.

▼ The importance of SMEs in the economies of all countries is well documented in literature worldwide. SMEs play an important role in world economies, including that of Namibia. These roles include employment creation, contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) and the generation of income. The purpose of this paper was to analyse early stage formal SME funding challenges in Windhoek, Namibia. This was informed by the high SME failure rate of 75% at early stage. The research objectives sought to identify different forms of challenges faced by SMEs during early stages of development in Windhoek. This would help draw up current sources of SME funding in Namibia, to determine the different forms of government SMEs assistance (funding, training) in Namibia, to determine what the necessary requirements are for SMEs at early stages of business and to recommend ways of overcoming challenges faced by SMEs at this stage. The research assumed that government intervention through the provision of financial assistance, infrastructure, training and favourable taxation policies would reverse the trend. The study adopted a descriptive research design using 120 randomly selected registered operators of SMEs in Windhoek. Data collected was analysed using SPSS. Results from the data analysis indicated that poor funding, different forms of government SME assistance, determine necessary requirements for SMEs at an early stage. The researcher recommended ways of overcoming challenges faced by SMEs at an early stage of development in Windhoek: provision of loans without collateral, training on how to keep records and draw up financial statements, establishment of different forms of government SMEs assistance, establishment of a strong SMEs funding agency, to highlight the requirements for SMEs at an early stage and recommend ways of overcoming challenges faced by SMEs at early stages of development.

▼ The production of high quality silicon requires the use of ultraclean coal containing less than 1.5% ash. The magnetite used to clean the coal in a dense medium process is a contaminant that seriously impacts the quality of the final silicon product. As such, research has been conducted to evaluate the potential to substitute the magnetite with fine silica–based alternative material generated during the silicon production process. Dense medium cyclone tests were performed based on a statistically designed program to determine the optimum conditions that maximize organic efficiency and minimize probable error and low–density bypass. The results revealed that a clean coal product with less than 1.5% ash can be produced using a medium formed from the silicon production waste with an organic efficiency value of around 99% and a probable error value below 0.02. There was no measurable bypass of high density particles into the product stream or low–density particles into the reject stream.

▼ This work investigates atomic hydrogen emission line spectra at 1420 MHz from the 100 meter Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia using the technique of Gaussian deconvolution. Data from the Green Bank Telescope is superior to
data previously used in Gaussian deconvolution studies as the Green Bank Telescope minimizes side lobe radiation, producing some of the purest 21 cm spectra to date. The results show evidence for the components of the Cold Neutral Medium, Warm Neutral
Medium, and a third, broad component previously hypothesized to be due to instrumental effects. The nature of the broad component is discussed, and we conclude that the broad component can be produced by a combination of Cold and Warm Neutral Medium
emission regions, and Galactic streaming and noncircular motions.

▼ The study sought to investigate the factors that hamper the growth of registered small and medium enterprises, specifically in Katutura Central Constituency, in order to develop an understanding of the dynamics of SMEs. The study was motivated by the fact that despite the establishment of the SME Incubation Centres in Katutura with the objective of assisting small businesses to grow into formal small and medium enterprises, most of them are still in incubation.
The research study employed a mixed method approach, comprising of the qualitative and quantitative research designs. The quantitative research design enabled the researcher to collect data using questionnaires and convert that data into numerical form so that statistical analyses could be made and conclusions were drawn from the statistical analyses. The qualitative design enabled the researcher to gather data through interviews and focus group discussions with the use of open-ended questions. The population of the study was 500 entrepreneurs and the sample size consisted of seventy five (75) entrepreneurs. Data was collected after the data collection instrument was approved by the supervisor. A pilot study using 10 respondents was conducted before full scale data collection. The purpose of the pilot study was to refine the questionnaires so that respondents could not have problems in recording the data. Furthermore, it enabled the researcher to obtain some assessment of the questions’ validity and the likely reliability of the data that were collected. Data from then (10) piloted respondents was analyzed and results interpreted for correctness of the research instruments. Appropriate modifications were done on the instruments. The modification of the questionnaire was then followed by full scale data collection. The questionnaires were administered to entrepreneurs around the Katutura Central Constituency.
Qualitative data was analyzed manually by first summarizing the information gathered and then categorized and coded the responses into emerging themes. Quantitative data was then analyzed using a statistical package of Microsoft Excel.
The study revealed that stringent government policies relating to SMEs and lack of subsidies, and micro and market environmental challenges such as competition, inadequate finance, lack of equipment, limited enterprise spaces, and lack of business management skills have contributed to the stagnant process of SMEs growth. In conclusion, SME sector in Namibia has not flourished and met most expectations. Hence, the issue of lack of access to capital, inadequate entrepreneurial development, disabling regulatory environment as well as lack of effective competitive strategies pose serious challenges that require active government and private sector involvement if the huge potential in this sector is to be harnessed. Therefore, resolutions by both the private and public sectors to address these challenges should be sought. One such notable attempt is in the form of both private and public institutional arrangements to support…

▼ We explore the use of clock skew of a wireless local area network access point (AP) as its fingerprint to detect unauthorized APs quickly and accurately. The main goal behind using clock skews is to overcome one of the major limitations of existing solutions - the inability to effectively detect Medium Access Control (MAC) address spoofing. We calculate the clock skew of an AP from the IEEE 802.11 Time Synchronization Function (TSF) timestamps sent out in the beacon/probe response frames. We use two different methods for this purpose - one based on linear programming and the other based on least square fit. We supplement these methods with a heuristic for differentiating original packets from those sent by the fake APs. We collect TSF timestamp data from several APs in three different residential settings. Using our measurement data as well as data obtained from a large conference setting, we find that clock skews remain consistent over time for the same AP but vary significantly across APs. Furthermore, we improve the resolution of received timestamp of the frames and show that with this enhancement our methodology can find clock skews very quickly, using 50-100 packets in most of the cases. We also discuss and quantify the impact of various external factors including temperature variation, virtualization, clock source selection and NTP synchronization on clock skews. Our results indicate that the use of clock skews appears to be an efficient and robust method for detecting fake APs in wireless local area networks.

▼ This thesis examines the molecular gas properties in the central 600 parsecs of the Galaxy (the CMZ). I first present a study of a group of HII regions in the central 10 parsecs embedded within the M-0.02-0.07 cloud, adjacent to the Sgr A East supernova remnant. To better depict the physical relationship between these sources, I use archival VLA observations and Paschen-alpha images from the Hubble Space telescope to determine the extinction toward the HII regions. From the measured extinctions and source morphologies, I determine that three of the HII regions lie on the front side of the cloud and formed in the eastern part of the cloud which is unaffected by the supernova remnant's expansion. The higher extinction of the fourth HII region indicates it is embedded in the supernova-compressed ridge, and though younger than the other HII regions, is still older than the supernova. This work is an important determination of the their line-of-sight placement of these sources which helps to define their interaction and strengthens the case that the supernova did not trigger the formation of the HII regions. I next present results from a project I led to survey a sample of CMZ clouds for hot gas using the Green Bank Telescope. I observe multiple highly-excited lines of ammonia, and detect emission from the (9,9) line of ammonia, (excitation energy = 840 K) in 13 of 17 clouds, many of which have no associated star formation. For the three strongest sources, I derive rotation temperatures of 400-500 K, substantially higher than previous temperatures of 200-300 K measured for these clouds. The widespread detections of gas hotter than 400 K indicates for the first time that his hot gas must be heated by global processes in the CMZ. These extremely high temperatures also suggest that cosmic rays are not responsible for the heating of this gas. I also present a determination of the density of the Circumnuclear disk (CND) in the central two parsecs using multiple transitions of HCN and \hco with the APEX telescope, a 12m ALMA prototype dish. These molecules have critical densities > 107 cm-3 and directly constrain the existence of high-density gas. The excitation analysis of HCN and HCO+ yields significantly tighter limits on the typical densities in this gas n = 105 -107 cm-3, however I cannot rule out the possibility that a small number of individual gas clumps are tidally stable or in virial equilibrium. The detection of the v2=1 vibrationally-excited J=4-3 HCN line also indicates that radiative excitation may play a role in the excitation of HCN in this source, but it is not clear if radiative excitation in the CND is a localized or global phenomenon. Finally, I present a summary of early results from a survey of four molecular cloud complexes in the CMZ , which I led using the new capabilities of the VLA. The goal of this work is to determine the variation in temperature in these clouds on 0.1 pc scales to ultimately identify their heating sources. An unanticipated discovery of this study has been hundreds of weak,…

▼ Consider an open control volume consisting of a porous
medium submerged in a surrounding ambient fluid of density ρ_a. The
top and bottom of the control volume allow ambient fluid to enter
the porous medium. Saline fluid of density ρ_s>ρ_a is
supplied at a constant rate of Q_o near the top of the control
volume resulting in a descending plume that migrates downward
through the porous medium entraining ambient fluid as it falls.
Plume fluid discharges along the lower boundary where it drains
into the surrounding external fluid through a series of small
fissures of area A. The dense fluid accumulates along the lower
boundary until a steady state in which the rate of draining is
balanced by the influx from the plume. The resulting lower layer
depth is h. The objective of this thesis is to develop a
theoretical model to predict h and discuss the comparison of the
model against experimental measurements of h.

▼ The position of the Sun, within the Milky Way, prohibits us from observing our Galactic
system as a whole. Our knowledge of the structure of our Galaxy has increased dramatically;
however, there is still no consensus on many seemingly simple questions. Primarily, How
many spiral arms does the Milky Way have?, Where are they? And, What’s on the far side
of the Galactic center?
Galactic H II regions are the formation sites of massive OB stars. Because the main
sequence lifetimes of OB stars are short - only ∼tens of millions of years - they thus reveal
the locations of current star formation sites. They are therefore found only in locations of
active star formation, primarily the spiral arms; H II regions are therefore the archetypal
tracers of Galactic spiral structure.
The systemic velocity of each H II region, from an observed radio recombination line
(RRL), can be applied to a Galactic rotation model in order to calculate the kinematic
distance to the region. In the inner Galaxy, line of sight distances are bi-valued such that
a single systemic velocity corresponds to two line of sight distances equidistant to the subcentral
(tangent) point. Kinematic Distance Ambiguity Resolutions (KDARs) can be made
via an analysis of neutral hydrogen (H I) absorption towards each region.
We determine a modification of the terminal-velocity KDAR method which investigates
H I absorption in velocity channel intervals, rather than in single channels. In addition, we
use H I absorption associated with known Galactic structures (in longitude-velocity space) to
provide lower-limits on line of sight distances. In this manner we are able to constrain the
line of sight distance to over 200 H II regions; including regions located in the extreme inner
Galaxy.
We also compile a complete census of HII regions with known RRL velocities, taken from
the literature - and the H I emission/absorption spectrum pairs toward them – within the
bounds of the Southern Galactic Plane Survey; a total of 252 regions.
As the result of this work, the list of known fourth quadrant H II regions for which a
KDAR analysis has either been prepared for, or attempted, is now exhausted – comparable
to the northern hemisphere at the conclusion of Anderson & Bania (2009). This exhaustion
of candidates in the northern hemisphere was overcome through the undertaking of large scale
HII region discovery surveys. The results of which more than doubled the number of
known HII regions within the surveyed longitude range – reinvigorating HII region kinematic
distance studies in the northern hemisphere.
Following the candidate selection strategies of the northern surveys, we perform a pilot HII
region discovery survey in the southern hemisphere. Using the Australia Telescope Compact
Array we confirm 28 H II region candidates as genuine regions for the first time.
As a result of these analyses, we have made the largest study of H I absorption towards
H II regions in the fourth Galactic quadrant ever performed – as well as providing datasets

▼ The cycle of star formation is the key to galaxy evolution. Stars form in massive collections of extremely dense cold gas. Stellar feedback will inject turbulence into the interstellar medium (ISM) and regulate the availability of more star-forming gas. This gas is an integral component in the cycle of star formation but is very difficult to model in numerical simulations. We have investigated the interplay between star formation and the structure of the ISM in numerical simulations. These simulations were done using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code Gasoline. For this work we introduce a new treatment for photoelectric heating in Gasoline. We first explore the impact of numerical parameter choices for the star formation threshold density, star formation efficiency and feedback efficiency. Of these three parameters, only the feedback efficiency plays a large role in determining the global star formation rate of the galaxy. Further, we explore the truncation of star formation in the outer regions of galactic discs and its relation to the presence of a two-phase thermal instability. In the outer regions of the simulated discs, gas exists almost exclusively in one warm phase, unsuitable to host large-scale star formation. We find that the disappearance of two-phase structure in the ISM corresponds to the truncation of star formation.

▼ ABSTRACT
The impressive protein content and rapid growth of Spirulina in entirely alkaline
medium
have attracted the attention of both researchers and business men. Spirulina is one of the
best solutions for the simple production of proteinuous food supplement. The protein
content of Spirulina varies between 50 % and 70%. The present study was conducted to
investigate the possibility of producing Spirulina in outdoor cultivation technology using a
local product (Trona) as a substitute for the three major ingredients (NaHCO3, Na2CO3 &
NaCl) in the Zarrouk’s standard culture
medium. The standard
medium (SM) was prepared
from analytical grade chemicals and used as a control. Accordingly, a modified culture
medium (MM) was formulated by incorporating Trona (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O). 400 ml
brine sample was taken from Lake Chitu. The sample was filtered, and the SM & MM
media, were inoculated in triplicate with the Spirulia contained in the brine. The growth of
Spirulina continued for ten days with every 48 h monitoring. The data on Spirulina biomass
interms of yield and chlorophyll content were collected. Chemical and microbiogical
analyses were done. During the growth cycle, the exponential growth phase was
mathematically analyzed. In the scaling-up trial, a plastic dish with a diameter of 60 cm was
used in the place of a pond for 7 days. Accordingly, biomass determination, phyico- chmical
analysis and sensory evaluation were conducted. The doubling time in the analysis of the
exponential growth phase gave close values for both media (SM = 53 h, MM = 51 h). The
rest of the data were analyzed and means compared by t-Test using SPSS software at 5%
significance level. At the end of the experiment (10th day) the mean value of biomass yield
was 823.743 mg/l and 832.498 mg/l for the MM and SM respectively. Cell productivity was
83.221 mg l-1day-1 for the SM and 82.374 mg mgl-1day-1 for the MM. The crude protein
content of biomass was 50.53% and to 51.93 % in the MM and SM respectively. The odour
of Spirulina in SM was rated 6.333 and that of the MM was rated 5.666, while the taste of
the SM was 5.888 and the MM was 5.666. Comparison of the two mean values of yield,
proximate analysis and sensory analysis showed that there was no statistically significant
difference between the products in the SM and MM. This justifies that Trona can be used in
the culture
medium to cultivate Spirulina for human consumption. Finally, Spirulina
production and processing technology has been outlined.

Thus the need to adopt practices that enhance product quality is no longer an option for businesses of all levels. This study examines the awareness, implementation levels and challenges facing SMEs in the adoption and use of three key business process improvement approaches. The approaches include: six sigma, benchmarking and business process re-engineering. The study adopted a descriptive research methodology with target population being SMEs registered with Kebs and operating in the Kariobangi light industries area. Sixty firms were randomly selected proportionately according to products manufactured. Data analysis was done using SPSS. It was found that there exists a huge knowledge gap on the three BPI approaches with Benchmarking being the only approach that showed some moderate level of understanding. It was also found that SMEs tended to shun away from the costly and time demanding approaches such as BPR and Six Sigma and tended to apply, to a limited extent, benchmarking. Chi square test revealed that the level of implementation of BPI was not dependent on sub-sectors. The key challenge identified was the scarcity of funds to finance continuous business process improvement. It was recommended that government of Kenya, in conjunction with key stakeholders, should come up with affordable short term courses on business process improvement. It was also suggested that future studies should consider examining the influence of level of implementation of business process improvement on firm performance.

▼ Recognition of the economic significance of small businesses, and high-tech household businesses in particular grew during the last quarter of the 21st century is inevitable of global millennium development goals were to be met. This study aimed at determining the role of Risk taking, Innovations, Proactive, Social network and self-efficacy in SMEs’ role supporting and sustaining household needs focusing on Muthurwa market in Nairobi County. Sample of the study was 125 respondents. Data was collected using questionnaires and drop and pick technique was employed in the administration of the questionnaires. Simple random sampling was used to select the SMEs that participated in the study; Random sampling procedure ensured that all subjects have equal chances of being selected. SPSS was used in the coding and analysis of the data realized from the survey. The study found that the SMEs in Muthurwa mainly operated as sole traders. The SMEs had however outlived their initial stages of business establishment given that the enterprises had been in operation for a long time. The SME businesses remained small in size despite their many years of existence in business. The SME businesses were not diversified. A myriad of individual factors as well as environmental factors determined the success or failure of the SMEs in Muthurwa. The individual factors that determined business success were: gender, age, level of education, business training and entrepreneurial orientation. In terms of business challenges, the SMEs were affected by lack of credit, scanty market, technological handicap and unfavourable policy and regulatory environment. The entrepreneurs were also deficient of technical knowledge and business skills. The SMEs in Muthurwa were the sole source of support and sustenance of family needs. Income from the SME business were used to finance all the basic household needs. A significant share of income from the SMEs was spent on food, rent and school fees. Tailor-made business skills training programs should be developed in order to enhance the business acumen of the SME owners in Muthurwa. The right policies and regulatory environment should be created to encourage the entrepreneurs to engage in entrepreneurship. The SMEs themselves are encouraged to form marketing associations in order to address the problem of market scantiness. A similar study could be conducted in other locations to corroborate the findings of this study.

▼ The study objective was to establish the role of international networks in innovation process as a source of competitiveness among the SMEs in Nairobi City County Central Business District. The specific objectives of the study were; to establish the factors influencing SMEs to undertake International Networking, to establish the extent to which international networks contributed to innovation in the SMEs and to establish the extent to which international networks has contributed to competitiveness of the SMEs. This study used descriptive research design. The population of the study was all the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises operating in Nairobi Central Business district. According to the County Government of Nairobi records (2016) there are 726 SMEs operating in Nairobi Central Business District. The researcher used simple random sampling technique. The technique accorded all the members of the population equal chance of being selected for the study. The researcher picked the SME that fell in a number after every ten in the County Government of Nairobi records (2016). This enabled the researcher to arrive at 73 SMEs as the sample size. The study used primary data which was collected using semi structured questionnaire. Data was analysed using statistical package for social sciences based on the questionnaires. In particular, mean scores, percentages and frequency distributions were used to summarize the responses and to show the magnitude of similarities and differences. Results were presented in frequency tables and charts. The study concluded that; absence of skilled employees in region influenced SMEs to undertake international networking to a great extent. The study also found out that; internal characteristics and capabilities of SMEs contributed to innovativeness of SMEs in the NCBD to a great extent. From the findings it was also noted that international accumulation of tacit knowledge; change and elimination of boundaries inside and between organizations in the international innovation system; integration of tacit knowledge with research and development based codified knowledge contributed to innovation in the SMEs to a great extent. The study found out that; SMEs can use international networks as a tool to collude against common rivals or reduce competition by binding competitors as allies, enjoy first mover advantage by exploiting speed to market, and international inter-firm networks and common know-how cause the emergence of embedded tacit knowledge to a great extent.

▼ The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) sector is undoubtedly an important element of
Kenya‟s economy. The main objective of this research was to establish the extent to pecking
order theory has been adopted in the SME sector. In addition this research sought to identify
challenges and reasons as to why different sources of finance have been opted for SMEs in
Kenya. The research was conducted in Kenya in 2012 and involved data collection from 54
SMEs through the use of questionnaires. The SMEs were drawn from manufacturing, Service,
Commerce and trade and other industries. The results of the research show that SMEs practice
pecking order theory with skewness towards cheaper funds, i. e. 1.internal equity and donations,
then,2. friends contribution before opting for,3. debts. The reasons found ranged from high
interest rates offered by financial institutions to default procedures employed by the same
institutions. There need to inform the SME sector of the benefits of debts as a source of capital.

▼ According to the study conducted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in 2004,
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) playa very important role in society; they provide
employment to over 3.2 million people and account for 18% of Kenya's Gross Domestic
Product. With the upsurge of internet and e-commerce these SMEs have the potential of
contributing more to the economic growth of this country but only if they embrace this
technology. To create a conducive environment for the growth of e-commerce the
government has implemented various initiatives like improving infrastructure and legislation.
Indeed, the challenge for SMEs is to take advantage of these initiatives and tap into ecommerce
for their continued growth.
The purpose of this study was to gain an appreciation of the extent to which SMEs have
adopted e-commerce WI h respect to using e-tools as information systems. Additionally, the
study looked at the facto that inhibit and/or facilitate e-commerce adoption as guided by the
Unified Theory of Acce tance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model developed by
Venkatesh at el.
Using questionnaires, the study collected data from various SMEs across four major towns in
the country. Findings confirmed an impressive use of e-commerce with mobile phones and
computers being the main tools. Having been influenced by factors like peer organizations,
ease of use and performance expectation SMEs are using these tools to conduct market
research, learn, access business information as well as pay business bills and other
obligations.
Obstacles that hinder firms from usmg e-commerce range from the fact that internet is
expensive, inadequate or poor infrastructure, cyber insecurity and lack of adequate legal
environment. Among recommendations put forward to the government to address these
obstacles include speedy formulation and implementation of measures that will lower internet
bandwidth especially after commissioning of several undersea fibre cables, enhanced
infrastructure as well as firming up the legal institutions.
In conclusion, Kenya, as a country stands to gain a lot from the use of e-tools as information
systems in doing business. With small enterprises showing an impressive adoption of ecommerce,
the entire society needs to embrace this technology specially in this information
age.

▼ This thesis is an investigation of the role of media consumption goals and involvement with the
medium within a mobile advertising model. Much of the mobile advertising research focuses on the role of message related characteristics on attitude toward the mobile ad. More focus is needed in understanding the role of
medium related variables . This represents rich and largely unexplored territory and is now more important as media options and audience fragmentation increases. We propose a focus on why individuals choose to use media and on their involvement with the
medium. Four hundred and eighty-nine undergraduate students participated in an in-lab, online survey and the data was analysed using Structural Equation Modeling. Our findings support that a positive attitude toward the mobile ad is primarily the result of an experiential use of the
medium that signals stronger involvement with the
medium and renders mobile advertising, goal relevant.

▼ Evaluation of the multilayer
medium Green’s function is essential in many practical applications of electromagnetic analysis including the design of microwave circuits and microstrip antennas, modeling of high-speed interconnects, remote sensing, geoscience, and others. Expansion of the layered
medium dyadic Green’s function’s components over cylindrical waves obtained through the finite-difference solution to 1D differential equation governing their spectra is an effective method to approximate the fields in the intermediate and far zones of the point source (Okhmatovski et al., IEEE TAP 2002). In the near vicinity of the point source, however, such approximation becomes inaccurate. This is due to spherical waves dominating the solution near the source and counted number of cylindrical waves becoming inadequate to their accurate description. To develop uniformly accurate approximation, we decompose the spectrum of the total potential into the incident and scattered potential contributions. The 1D differential equation governing the spectrum of the layered
medium Green’s function is formulated with respect to the scattered potential rather than the total potential as it was done previously (Okhmatovski et al., IEEE TAP 2002). The boundary conditions at dielectric layer interfaces, based on the continuity of the Green’s function and the normal component of electric flux density are enforced. As a result, the pole-residual approximation of the scattered potential spectrum is obtained which leads to accurate cylindrical wave approximation in the spatial domain in both the intermediate and far zones since singularity of Green’s function resides in the incident potential. The incident field is subsequently added in the analytic form and, hence, accurately describes the field near the source.

▼ To succeed in stepping out of a firm paradigm is a really notable achievement. The first and maybe the most difficult task is to recognize the very existence of the paradigm. And if this paradigm is of a visual representation, for whatever reason, it seems to be even more difficult. The cinematic adaptation of Imre Kertész’ Holocaust-novel is maybe the best example: tough the novel successfully transgressed the common discourse about the Holocaust, the film version cannot help but become in the director’s hands just another one in the long series of “remakes” of Schindler’s List. Although The Merchant of Venice is not about the Holocaust, as we could see, it became a Holocaust-allegory after the end of the Second World War. Michael Radford’s adaptation has the unquestionable achievement of freeing Shakespeare’s play of the limits of this twentieth-century discourse, and not letting his film join the petrified visual representation of it. Instead, his movie introduces such characters that have fundamental conflicts within them, and these problems of their identity make the central interest of the film.

▼ Technological innovation capability is playing an increasingly important role to maintain the competitive advantages for SMEs (small and
medium enterprises) in China. Meanwhile, more and more Chinese women are getting out of the family and going to work. Some of them even become top executives of firms. In this context, the analysis of the impact of female force participation in TMT (top management team) on firms??? technological innovation capability in this paper becomes very necessary and important. If female executives can indeed promote firms??? technological innovation capability through a unique way, firms should attract more suitable female executives to join TMT and should implement appropriate strategies to make the best use of their value. This paper separates female participation in TMT into two categories: ordinary female executives and female CEOs. Firstly, the overall effect of female participation in TMT on firms??? technological innovation capability is examined. Secondly, R&D intensity variable is introduced to see whether female participation in TMT and firms??? R&D-intensive strategy has a synergy effect on firms??? technological innovation capability or not. In addition, competition intensity variable is introduced to test the impact of female executives on firms??? technological innovation capability when faced with fierce competition. Finally, the co-effects of female participation in TMT and various innovation methods are also discussed.

▼ The United Arab Emirates promotes English as the Medium of Instruction (hereafter referred to as EMI) at tertiary level, which results in many ‘content’ subjects being taught via English. Many institutions employ native English speaking teachers, referred to as either NESTs or NS, for language classes and insist that content teachers operate through this second or other language (L2), to the detriment of ‘non-native’ English speaking teachers in terms of recruitment, and also to the detriment of the students who must study their major subjects via a foreign language. NS teachers are expected to enforce a monolingual classroom environment where English is compulsory and use of the students’ first language is penalised. The U.A.E. is also engaged in spreading this monolingual culture to primary and secondary schools. This mixed methodology study evaluates faculty and management perceptions of the English medium status quo and current concerns within the TEFL/ TESOL profession. As well as surveying faculty opinions via a quantitative questionnaire and then a qualitative appraisal of written comments, interviews with senior management aided a critical appraisal of so-called ‘common-sense’ (Tollefson, 2002) policies and assumptions. The quantitative stage indicated discrepancies between different groups of faculty and the qualitative analysis of written comments and interview data allowed for some, often contradictory, themes to emerge. It will be suggested that many faculty were unconvinced that monolingual classroom environments were efficacious. EMI was challenged on the grounds that studying through another language adds to the learner’s cognitive burden (Troudi, 2009) and makes mastery of content subjects more difficult and contingent upon the student’s language skills. The management interviewees conceded these issues but felt that Content and Language Integrated Learning in English was vital for students who must function in an increasingly globalised market place. Little thought was given to what this might mean for the status of Arabic. It was recommended that Arabic should be reinstated as the medium of content instruction, that English be taught as a foreign language only, and that the way in which English is taught should be critically overhauled to make best use of the diverse skills of NESTs and NNESTs alike. It was also suggested that countries such as the U.A.E. are more likely to achieve the modernity they seek by following a model where the L1 is the language of instruction, while English fulfils its parallel role as a foreign language and international lingua-franca.

▼ The Humane Co-house design-led research project presents a new typology for shared
medium-density housing sited in a city-fringe Wellington suburb. The research argues communal living can be utilised to achieve smaller dwellings, a high
medium-density grain, a humane living environment and a new form of social interaction that home buyers will find desirable.
Buying a home is difficult throughout New Zealand and Wellington is no exception. Inner-city apartment blocks lack individuality, space for growing families and a sense of community and autonomy. While research shows houses in outer suburbs are perceived to provide these, they come at a high price and there are low amounts of available stock. There is potential for city-fringe suburbs adjacent to the inner city to accommodate more dwellings, creating available housing stock that is appealing to buyers who would otherwise be looking at expensive suburban houses.
The research begins with the current attitudes and preferences within the New Zealand housing context, and suggests that the appeal of the traditional detached suburban house is intertwined with a desired balance of private space to common space. The research designs and develops a new typology that attempts to achieve this balance, but with smaller dwellings at a high
medium-density.
Through design-led research an architectural definition and manifestation of a humane dwelling is formed. This focuses on a balance of private space and common space.
Qualities of common and private spaces within a dwelling are explored through literature and design tests. Evaluation of design case studies produced from research, tests and iterations draws conclusions about how communal living can be utilised by different demographics to achieve a new type of social interaction, and a basic level of affordability that will resonate in the current context. The final design case study was critically reflected upon in terms of a theoretical client that over time might transition through three demographic groups – a working young person or couple, a family and a retired person or couple. In this way the design case study produced was considered as a flexible and long-term dwelling, resulting in a humane and appealing home for occupants at different stages of life.

▼ The ‘Conzen School’ of Urban Morphology identified by Kostof in his book The City Shaped, is a western way of looking at parcels of land, lots, and the street grid from above in a geometric manner imposed on the land, then analysing this in terms of land use pattern, town plan, and building form. This model of analysis and development lends itself to flat sites, and separated, isolated developments, and forms the basis for the existing model of development in western colonial nations. This thesis investigates whether an alternate development approach based on aggregative design can provide a viable alternative to the standard model of
Medium Density Housing found in New Zealand. Investigation in the frame of Christopher Alexander’s New Theory of Urban Design, Lucien Kroll, and The New Urbanists addresses a new way of approaching these sites through the use of organic geometries and accumulative principals. Accompanying and informing this approach is a case study of vernacular Cycladic Architecture.
In balance with the Cycladic case study the thesis addresses the acceptance of this model of development in a New Zealand context. In particular, with reference to the physical aspects of privacy, view, shared space as well as perceptions of ownership, individuality and identity in a higher density environment. The aggregative approach is similar to that explored through Ian Athfield’s Home in Khandallah; Athfield House. This housing and office complex is an early experiment into the same principles that this thesis addresses. The thesis develops a methodological approach to testing the aggregative nature of development and simulates this through the use of in studio design exercises. These exercises will be a combination of external input from other designers and internal; single author input. The final design outcome will be addressing the results of this simulation, the design principals, guidelines and rules, rather than producing a stand-alone design artifact.

▼ New Zealand is a progressively ethnic diverse yet individualistic country. The population is constantly increasing and among this is cohort of people belonging to collectivist cultures, with forecasts of these cultures such as Asians said to be rising 120 percent to 600,000 by 2021. The current social patterns in individualistic societies such as New Zealand suggest that the dominant style of living is singular in nature, meaning small clusters of individuals. However, in collectivist societies people live in a more integrated manner with others and their surroundings, contributing to an arguably healthier lifestyle and greater acceptance. This shift in the identity of New Zealand demands for a change in the way that different cultures can live with each other, to better reflect the needs of these different groups while increasing the social aspects within them.
This thesis investigates how
medium density architecture can address the problem of housing different cultures within the same space, along with finding ways to increase the sociability among dwellers in New Zealand. Adopting Hofstede’s cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism to aid in designing for different societies, Newtown in Wellington was used as testing grounds to identify ways that people can live integrated among themselves as well as different groups and styles of living, forming a more ‘cohesive’ culture overall. Coupling conventional
medium density housing techniques and specialized ‘social’ design in a semi-urban setting; this thesis aimed to find ways to create a model that allows for facilitating the togetherness of strangers without forcing them to fully assimilate. The research challenges how contemporary architecture can create an environment where people of different ages or backgrounds can be housed together to form a ‘living community’. It finds that flexible inclusive design that adapts to the existing fabric and allows for integration with the wider community as well as the examined groups can offer a successful model for the togetherness of strangers.

▼ Higher Hopes for Denser Living explores the current constraints in existing
medium-density housing in New Zealand. People traditionally see suburban architecture as a single standalone dwelling with a big backyard where there is a sense of privacy between them and their neighbours. The vision of a suburban home is based on past memories, and not necessarily adapted to the current context and constraints of future housing needs. The experiences of ‘home’ are of great importance as they contribute to the resident’s wellbeing and satisfaction.
Medium-density housing is a major growth area in New Zealand urban developments. As the need for greater housing density increases, improving the quality of design in
medium-density housing will raise the appeal to New Zealanders. There is a growing agreement that
medium-density housing developments are part of the answer to New Zealand’s housing supply issues. However, there is less agreement on what constitutes good quality
medium-density housing and how this may assist in enhancing livability for those who live in these areas.
The Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie will be explored as it is an existing dense suburban area in Wellington with connection to the city. An opportunity exists here to enhance livability and vitality* within and around the town centre through quality residential intensification. Kilbirnie currently has a limited range of housing choices, particularly in terms of
medium-density terrace and townhouses. Providing more choice would improve vitality and safety and help to maintain a wider range of services and will ensure the town centre maintains its role as a key social and communal hub for the southern and eastern suburbs of Wellington.
