Dominican identity in flux : media consumption, negotiation, and Afro-Caribbean subjectivity in the U.S.

▼ This dissertation uses U.S.
media as a lens to interpret the identity negotiation practices among Dominican-Americans and Dominicans living in the U.S. in the struggle to maintain an identification that is distinct from both pan-ethnic latinidad and blackness. Not appropriately hailed by either category, those that are of both Latino and African heritages must attempt to negotiate and position themselves within racialized discourses that place “Black” and “Latino” as mutually exclusive categories, discourses that simultaneously privilege these categories above other forms of identification that would be more salient for U.S. Dominican communities, namely nationality or cultural heritage. As a result, those with a Dominican/Dominican-American subjectivity are challenged to find representations that reflect their racial, ethnic, and national identities, often negotiating an identification with images that do not accommodate their regularly ignored dominicanidad. Therefore, my dissertation is framed by the question: what are the ways Dominicans navigate U.S. mediated and discursive landscapes of identity and how are they negotiating U.S.
media and the representations they include?
Through a combination of traditional fieldwork conducted in New York City, a critical cultural study, and internet reception study, this dissertation seeks to give voice to those who are experiencing identity in flux. Not only does such a project address a U.S. population that is often ignored and marginalized within the scholarly literature, it attempts to complicate identity negotiation processes within the U.S. more broadly. Rooted in the contention that dominicanidad is uniquely positioned to potentially challenge U.S. hegemonic racial ideology, my dissertation will provide two critical interventions into the field of Latina/
o Media Studies: (1) it offers an exploration of the mediated representation and discourses contributing to a highly negotiated process of identification among Dominicans and Dominican-Americans, and (2) it reveals a more intimate and contested relationship between blackness and latinidad based on how they are imbedded within articulations of dominicanidad. Ultimately, my project illuminates how the negotiated usage of various
media (such as television, films, and websites) by Dominicans in the U.S. plays a significant role within a fluctuating understanding of dominicanidad.

In the master's thesis the social network Instagram is presented as a potentially good channel for web advertising and, thereby, the possibility of increasing the company's success and recognisability. In the theoretical part, we examine specialised literature in the field of digital marketing, online advertising, and social networks. With a practical case of introduction of Instagram to a company, we show how can a proper social media strategy increase business recognition of the company. The thesis is carried out on a case study of the company KOVA d.o.o., where the effectiveness or the impact of the introduction of the social network to a company was measured. This is a company with a long tradition, which until today has not been active on social networks.

▼ This thesis explores the queer dimensions of the posthumous career of the late Tejana singer, Selena Quintanilla-Prez, to better understand how her commercial legacy shaped disparate and unequal modes of cultural, political and economic belonging for the Latina/o LGBTQ community. Drawing from a queer, legal framework of U.S. citizenship, as well as Latina/o performance and media scholarship, I contend that the production and consumption of “Selena commodities” provides a window into both shifting and stagnant representations of queer Latina/o identity within both U.S. popular culture and Latin American entertainment. For a population of new sexual subject-citizens, Selena’s commercial legacy is used as a transcultural strategy to expand gender formations, express sexual fluidity and demand inclusion to public space. This thesis quantifies this alternative expression of belonging as queer Latinx cultural citizenship; a radical, embodied strategy of disidentification that emphasizes the connections between cultural and commercial visibility with the affirmation of cultural, racial, gendered and sexual difference from normative ideals and political enfranchisement. Yet this strategy towards representation does not always function equally across genders. By centering the legal, commercial and artistic dimensions of Selena’s queer legacy, this thesis demonstrates how Selena commodities offer an incomplete platform from which to articulate queer Latinx cultural citizenship.

This thesis has proposed to investigate the ways in which the judicialization of families increases through the so-called appropriate methods of conflict resolution in the context of humanized justice. Therefore, based on the ethnography carried out in the Judicial Center for Conflict Resolution and Civic Rights ? CEJUSC Manaus Advanced Pole, has sought to weave a critical reading about the movement designated as humanization of Justice and conciliatory technologies, as well as to highlight the discursive constructions and representations about the shared families by agents and the subjects whom demand the services of the judiciary. Being between family conflicts and consensual resolutions, it made possible to apprehend both relational and complementary (although not uniform) of official discourses, agents' practices and ways of families? functioning, as well as the controversial meanings about family…

The challenge of attaining sustainable travel on holidays has several dimensions. Technical and organizational challenges are found at the system level, and at an individual level we have to deal with psychological barriers. But there is one more challenge, which may be found at a societal level. It is about how sociocultural structures and actors in society can shape identity, lifestyle and norms of individuals. In this paper, the emphasis is laid on the latter, focusing on media. Media in the form of texts and pictures about travel can work as inspiration for many tourists, and contribute to the build-up of more or less eco-friendly lifestyles and consumer behaviors. By using content analysis of four Swedish magazines and a web survey addressed youths 18-30 years old, the following research questions are being answered: “How are texts and pictures about (un)sustainable travel described in travel-…

▼ With the rapid development of social
media and social network, there has emerged a new form of electronic commerce. Social commerce is a new mechanism of e-commerce combine with the characteristic of social network. Our study focused in the context of online group activity on Facebook. In this study, we want to explore the effect of social factors on impulse buying intention. Besides, we combined with value-based model and S-
O-R model to find out the interaction between ration and emotion during generating impulse buying intention.
Followings are our research result we found. First, we found out that emotional reactions would be aroused when user see their friend with strong tie operate online group buying on Facebook. Second, the interaction between ration and emotion, we found out that emotion could decrease the effect of perceived cost on perceived value. Also, the emotional reactions would strengthen the effect of perceived value on impulse buying intention.

▼ “Border Horror: Genre of Death and Violence on the US-Mexico Border” examines representations of death and violence along the US-Mexico border in film, television, and graphic novels from 1994 to present day. The study introduces border horror as a genre and an analytic category through which to identify, categorize, and respond to representations of death in this highly charged borderland after the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This project studies discourses about violence, dying, death, and the undead with gender, genre, and geography to illuminate the legacies of colonization and conquest that are buried in cultural memory. I argue that an analysis of these images within the border-horror generic category gives us an understanding of how communities living along this space are coded as disposable. Grounded in
media studies, my formulation of border horror analyzes societal discourses found elsewhere—in political, academic, artistic, and mainstream texts, as well as in media—that focus on the communities living and dying along the borderlands. The genre thus extends across a range of cultural productions and discourses, from B-movies to academic works, journalistic accounts, and graphic novels.
Each chapter of the dissertation highlights the specificity of border horror, focusing on three key generic tropes that link gendered bodies with genre and border geography: personification of the border, conflation of the female body with the geography, and the use of indigenous motifs to explain violence. Through personification, the border is given power over human life; whether intentional or not, the personification of the border and the framing of the border as a murderous, dangerous space inherently shifts the focus away from sociopolitical forces that lead to violence and death. By conflating the female body with the geography, the border itself becomes feminized, and the devious and dangerous border that we see in the previous trope influences the disposability and pain that female bodies—here, especially, the bodies of women of color—endure. I argue that representations of death and violence set on the US-Mexico border, the border-horror genre, is a transgeneric genre, one that exists across existing and recognized genres of cultural productions.

▼ Zeolites, an important class of micro porous
materials, have been used as catalysts, ion exchangers and
adsorbents. They are built with SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra. Cerium
AlPO-5 molecular sieves were synthesized and reported for oxidation
of ethyl benzene and toluene. Since cerium entered the framework of
AlPO-5, it was expected same entry in the framework of
Silicalite-1. With this logic, in the present study Ce-Silicalite-1
molecular sieves and study of their activity for vapour phase
oxidation of ethyl benzene and p- xylene were attempted in air. The
major products were p-diethyl benzene (p-DEB) and ethyl benzene
(EB), and minor products m- and o-diethyl benzene (m-DEB and
o-DEB). The study of time on stream indicated very slow decrease in
conversion with the increase in time on stream, but the selectivity
of p-DEB increased due to partial blocking of pore with coke. Hence
for selective formation of p-dialkyl benzene, high crystallinity
and large crystal size were proved crucial. The WHSV was 5.776 h-1
and air flow rate 8ml h-1, acetophenone was 99 % selectivity at 300
°C. Cerium silicalite-1 (50) was more active (48 % conversion) than
others. The study of time on stream indicated steady conversion
with high selectivity to acetophenone for 6 h. It established
absence of coke formations. The major product was p-methyl
benzaldehyde. The conversion of p-xylene was 59 % at 300 °C. The
other product p-methyl benzyl alcohol was very insignificant. The
activity of the catalyst followed the order Ce-Silicalite-1,
(50gt75gt100). The study of time on stream indicated study p-xylene
conversion and p-methyl benzaldehyde selectivity. Hence the study
indicated feasibility of incorporating cerium in the framework of
Silicalite-1. Hence ZSM-5 synthesized in fluoride medium was
established to have high p-selectivity in alkylation and
disproportionation. Ce-Silicalite-1 molecular sieves, synthesized
in the fluoride medium, also exhibited high selectivity in the
oxidation of alkyl aromatics in air. newline newline

▼ My project argues that the U.S.-Mexico border is an assemblage of medial forms that are communicated in multiple media without superseding one another. For example, the border is, at once, a graphic design on numerous maps; a symbolic construction in copious literary and legal textual media; a series of fences erected in various terrestrial media; a photographic icon in still and moving pictures; an architectural design; a painted figure; the list goes on. As an assortment of medial forms, The U.S.-Mexico border does not refer to the United States and Mexico as the subjects of its mediation, but rather produces the United States and Mexico as subjects, which thereon depend on the border for their subjectivity, as the border depends on the nations for its continued existence. The United States and Mexico cannot be articulated from or with one another without what media theorist Bernhard Siegert calls “concrete practices and symbolic operations” to process their articulation, operations which are ultimately expressed in medial forms, whether lines on maps, untranslatable proper nouns, legal writ, poetic verses, or fences. In drawing connections between the borders produced in different media, I am examining borders as media systems that correspond to different cultural techniques and produce distinct political subjectivities. To envision this network, I develop the concept of the hyperborder, which I define as a border that extends across media. The hyperborder is a framework that links together different mediated borders, and that proposes and examines epistemological connections between them. The hyperborder is a way of attaining a global and comparative view of borders, while at the same time accounting for their different and irreducible media forms. In this project, I examine border forms primarily in three media: literary media, including poetry and prose; cartographic media, with an attention to different cultural meanings of mapmaking; and infrastructural media, particularly types of fencing. My methodology for researching and comparing these different media forms combines archival and participatory research. In order to study textual borders—those found in literary and cartographic media—I have relied on archival research carried out at UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library and in the Special Collections of UCSB’s Davidson Library. My desire to account for the location of media has also compelled me to research media forms in the field, so to speak. My analysis of Indigenous mapping in Chapter Two is informed by conversations that I have had with Jim Enote, director of the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center at Zuni Pueblo. My analysis of the U.S.-Mexico border fence in Chapter Three is grounded in physical fieldwork at the site of the fence, particularly with Friends of Friendship Park in San Diego and Tijuana. My combination of archival and participatory research practices allows for a wider view of the border. It also situates my project in numerous academic disciplines and fields, including Comparative…

▼ Language has long been used as a means of indexing one’s ethnic, gendered, racial and, arguably, their sexual identities. One’s perceived “accent” drawl, tone or even word choice communicates socially constructed cues to listeners. Studies have shown that white listeners often detect an “accent” from speakers of Color even when one is not apparent. My dissertation project focuses on these politics of language within the field of ethnic and
media studies. I examine how patterns of “accent” are linked to troubling representations for
[email protected] and
[email protected] actors have remained noticeably similar throughout the twentieth century despite drastic changes in
media technologies. For instance, from celebrity magazine of the 1920s to the digital era Spanish inflected English (SIE) “accents” are perceived and represented in the
media in strikingly similar fashion.I analyze racialized linguistic representations across four
media formats: print
media (1920s-1940s), television (1970s), animated film (2000), and the Internet (2010-2014). Each period represents different moments of heightened racial, immigrant strife often expressed in coded humorous, language play. For instance, staged “accents” and slang worked to racialize
[email protected] and
[email protected] comedic actors and voiceovers as sidekicks, peripheral characters and non-citizens. “Accent,” encased in quotes, is used to emphasize the relational nature and notion that certain people are heard as having one and other not. Two of my dissertation chapters focus on the visual representation of vocal SIE “accents” through word play in subtitles (print
media, Internet). The first chapter focuses on Mexican film actress Lupe Vélez and the representation of her linguistic “accent” in fan magazines while the last chapter investigates how web celebrity “La Coacha” uses of accented subtitles in her parody YouTube videos. Two other chapters examine how vocal “accents” and slang are heard and performed in relation to the written directives in scripts (television and animated film). The second chapter addresses the characters Chico Rodriguez and Louie Wilson in the 1970s sitcom Chico and the Man and the subsequent third chapter examines language use and Benjamin Bratt’s accented voice over acting of Mexican villain “El Macho” in Despicable Me: 2 (2013). Together, these four case studies demonstrate how language has long been a primary mode of racialization, which recurrently casts People of Color as both funny and foreign across different
media forms.I use a feminist critical discourse (FCD) analysis as my primary approach. This analysis focuses on how knowledge is produced, reported, and used. FCD refers to how the systems of gender are produced in cultural productions by focusing on the linguistic tactics in relation to struggles of power and agency. The literal language is investigated as well as the power dynamics that are not made explicit by the text. Archival materials such as magazines, television and film scripts, and analog videos were consulted. I also engaged in acousmatic listening in order…

▼ This study was designed to test a model examining the influence of brand-related UGC shared via Facebook on consumer response. Specific research objectives were to 1) investigate whether brand-related UGC act as stimuli to activate consumer response in relation to brands, 2) examine the process by which brand-related UGC influences consumer behavior via emotional and cognitive responses, and 3) test whether brand-related UGC source and receiver characteristics moderated the relationships between brand-related UGC and emotional and cognitive responses. The model tested was derived from the S-O-R consumer response model (Mehrabian & Russell, 1974) that depicts the effects of environmental stimuli on consumer responses (i.e., emotional, cognitive, behavioral). Data were collected from individuals participating in consumer panels (n = 533) managed by a marketing research company. Participants were individuals who were at least 18 years old and who had a Facebook account. An online self-administered survey methodology was employed. Mock Facebook fan pages were developed as visual stimuli and presented participants with brand-related UGC. Participants also completed a questionnaire containing measures of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the proposed hypotheses indicated in the model. The study examined brand-related UGC as stimulus, pleasure and arousal as emotional responses and perceived information quality as cognitive response. Information pass-along, impulse buying, future-purchase intention, and brand engagement were treated as behavioral response constructs (i.e., behavioral outcomes in relation to brand) in the S-O-R model. Homophily and brand involvement were tested as moderators in the S-O relationships. Brand-related UGC were informational stimuli that activated consumers' emotional and cognitive responses (i.e., pleasure, perceived information quality). However, arousal as an emotional response was not significantly influenced by brand-related UGC. The eWOM source characteristic (i.e., homophily) moderated the relationships between brand-related UGC and emotional and cognitive responses. Both emotional and cognitive responses examined (i.e., pleasure, arousal, perceived information quality) significantly influenced behavioral responses. Thus, information pass-along, impulse buying, future-purchase intention, and brand engagement were behavioral responses stimulated by brand-related UGC. Discussions of the findings, theoretical and practical implications, and limitations and suggestions for future research were provided based on the findings.

The research draws your attention towards the narratives of the newspaper O Globo during the occupation of the Rocinha favela by official forces in November 2011. Intended to identify what kind of representations was reported by the media at special moment of city life, which coexists with the implementation of the project of Pacifying Police Units (UPPs) and the expectation to host two international sporting mega events: World Cup (2014) and the Olympics (2016). Analyzing media representations about the process of occupation, the goal of the research was to discover clues that help to think the impact of this political measure on the city and its inhabitants. It was possible to realize that, unlike what had been happening in recent decades, urban violence not presented as a matter of…

This study aims to find the relation among the emotional and participatory engagements, the cultural competences and the deception of the Brazilian fans of the Tolkien universe in the reception of The Hobbit trilogy in movie theaters. It also aims to identify the marks of deception as a feeling – through spectatorship – or emotion – through reception. In addition to that, it contributes to film experience studies by relating emotion and feeling to the concepts of movies reception and film spectatorship. For that, we build a theoretical and methodological path in the field, and approach its previous and unfolding notions, in order to propose new terms for reception and spectatorship. Here, deception may be understood as two different states of affection: emotion, more immediate, temporary and short-lasting, and feeling, more long-lasting and…

With access to more and more information, citizens have more sophisticated expectations of how the government should respond to their needs. With the emergence of social media such as blogs or social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), and their increased use, new opportunities arise to improve the relationship the citizens and to meet their needs. In this context, this study seeks to answer the research question "How are the social media used in local government?" The main purpose of this study is to understand how social media are being adopted in local government and provide some useful recommendations for their use. With this goal in mind, this study also tries to understand the motivations and objectives of the presence in these platforms and identify its impact on the relationship the citizens. The research method used was a single case study, held in the Oeiras Municipality. The results support the idea that the presence in social media should be done in a careful and planned manner, promoting the engagement with the citizen. Given the complexity and volatility of these media, public authorities must realize that creating a Facebook page is not enough. They need to combine a strategy with the other media and make a change in culture, structure, people and procedures to develop a closer and transparent relationship with the citizen.

▼ The issue of political reform has been widely debated in Tonga, as calls for a modern democracy continue to challenge cultural modes of traditional leadership. Democratic changes to government remain problematic because of the intimate relationship shared between current political structures of power, and cultural demarcations of authority based on relational social networks in the kainga or Tongan kinship system. While social development and modernization have greatly increased awareness amongst the educated population about governance issues, large sections of the grassroots community have yet to acquire a thorough knowledge of government and political structures. Within this context, the local
media body holds a pivotal role as both a cultural and political actor, in its dissemination of reform-related messages to the public. Using a culturally thick approach, this thesis examines messages about political reform communicated by two independent newspapers in Tonga – the Taimi ‘
o Tonga and the Talaki - during the month of November, 2006. The timeframe represents a significant period in the nation’s struggle towards democracy, which saw the unprecedented riots of November 16, 2006. The thesis relates emergent themes in the newspaper texts to dominant cultural attitudes towards power as well as specific historical developments, in order to locate the media’s role within the Tongan social context. In facilitating a deeper understanding of the cultural dynamics at work behind political
media discourse, the thesis concludes with some preliminary suggestions as to how local cultural frameworks can be incorporated into modern forms of democracy, good governance and
media freedom.

▼ The evolutions veri ed in mobile devices capabilities (storage capacity, screen
resolution, processor, etc.) over the last years led to a signi cant change
in mobile user behavior, with the consumption and creation of multimedia
content becoming more common, in particular video tra c. Consequently,
mobile operator networks, despite being the target of architectural evolutions
and improvements over several parameters (such as capacity, transmission
and reception performance, amongst others), also increasingly become more
frequently challenged by performance aspects associated to the nature of
video tra c, whether by the demanding requirements associated to that
service, or by its volume increase in such networks.
This Thesis proposes modi cations to the mobile architecture towards a more

▼ The thesis installation,
Mata Sueños / Dream Killer, recalls the atmosphere of a birthday party. It also presents a surrogate for the anxiety and fear that permeates the experience of undocumented and mixed-status families living in the United States. As a person born into these circumstances, I reorient this celebration to bring attention to the looming possibility of removal. My installation suggests what remains hidden within domestic spaces. Upon close observation, the handmade paper decorations that adorn the room reveal that they are obsessively bitten. These decorations form an engulfing mass, one that is both familiar and surreal. Together with audio and video, the installation documents time and presence, even when absence seems imminent.

▼ This dissertation critically examines reggaetón music as it is discursively constructed through mainstream
media and Internet debates about the genre (e.g., online music forums, social networking profile pages) during and after the 2004 global musical crossover of reggaetón. Using various case studies to critically examine processes of both textual production and reception to reggaetón, I interrogate if and how the music industry constructs and simultaneously targets a Latin global and US Latino market for reggaetón through various marketing strategies and via mainstream
media coverage in the US and abroad. Considering textual production and reception as equally significant processes that are constantly in contention with one another, I examine how active and participatory audiences online, particularly fans and anti-fans, negotiate reggaetón as a cultural text and in relation to the ways they are interpellated as the target market for it. Here, I apply Louis Althusser’s definition of interpellation, as “ideology’s ability to assign individuals to specific positions within its own communicative (semiotic) representations of reality” to the ways that the audience for reggaetón is constructed based on specific demographic features, such as ethnicity, race, age, income and/or language (Grossberg et al. 2006: 207-208). In this dissertation, I interrogate how targeted demographics play a distinct role in the interpellation of the audiences for “Latin urban” musical forms like reggaetón. Reggaetón is a cultural signifier for the contested ways in which Latinidad is negotiated in everyday life and, particularly, in relation to discourses of authenticity that circulate through Latin(
o/a) popular culture and mainstream
media representations of Latinidad.

▼ This thesis explores the development and deployment of digital media in
museum exhibitions. This thesis aims to discover how developing digital
media contributes to new exhibition methodology and development
processes in museums by investigating the development of the Tangata o
le Moana exhibition at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
(Te Papa).
A detailed study of the Tangata o le Moana exhibition at Te Papa, and two
digital media elements within it; the New Home: Land of Plenty? video
installation, and the Pacific Beats Mixing Booth, are the focus of the
research. My experience of the exhibition is recorded. This is followed by
participant interviews with the 3D designer and Interpreter. Development
documents and organizational archives reveal motivations and goals in
developing digital media for exhibitions. In order to place the research in
a wider context of exhibition design and visitor behaviour, it focused on
three key elements in exhibition creation - environment (the physical and
social space), collaboration (the effect of the relationships on
development) and delivery (the exhibition). This data is compared with
current literature regarding exhibition development. The research
demonstrates that by incorporating digital media into exhibitions a new
relationship in the exhibition space develops. New museological ideas
that place exhibitions in an open-ended framework can align with
constructivist learning techniques. Combined with experiential
environments and creating liminal experiences, there is significant
potential for digital media to contribute to new exhibition methodologies.
The environmental effects of digital media combined with the focus on the
media content rather than ‘real things’ indicates a divergence from
traditional museum practice. The thesis argues that these experiential and
liminal experiences are largely incidental. Narrative forms of exhibition
development predominate. This indicates that involving collaborators with
expertise in digital media and experience design is not contributing to
developing new exhibition practices.

Following Social Media’s growth, not only strategy, but also the communication itself with the consumer, has suffered several changes. The interfaces created for such communication have a major influence on the quality of the information created conjointly, once only that way it is possible for the individual to effectively contribute with its own experience and feedback. This specific case study describes and explores the relation between O Boticário and the Blogosphere, but also thoroughly studies its management. Data for this study was gathered through interviews with stakeholders from both sides, literature analysis and direct observation. Results obtained demonstrate that a project based on clear criteria, looking to initiate and strengthen the relation between the company/brand and certain key bloggers have a successful effect on the relation with its target consumer.

▼ This dissertation seeks to ground its method and theoretical discussion based on frameworks regarding difference and representation in children’s
media. This study engages Dora the Explorer’s first five seasons that were produced from 2000 to 2010. This investigation seeks to understand the dialectic nature between
media, culture, literacy, pedagogy, and identity. This study is a contribution to the theoretical and methodological frameworks currently in practice in cultural studies,
media studies, and bilingual and bicultural education. For example, cultural studies examine questions of representation and difference in
media; however, a focus on children’s
media has not always been seen as a sufficiently scholarly project (Steinberg & Kincheloe, 1997). Through my personal vignettes with my niece, I attempt to shed light on children’s inherent intellect and their capacity to critique
media from their own perspective. It is also important that educators and parents take children’s
media into consideration when speaking about issues that affect children’s daily lives. In order to do future qualitative studies that involve focus groups, interviews, and audience focal groups, one needs theoretically and methodologically to decipher the messages and representations, which seem to be at work in children’s animated cartoons, from a bilingual and bicultural context. In order to do so, the study utilizes critical bicultural pedagogy (Darder, 1991) and borderlands theory (Anzaldúa, 1999) to construct a conceptual and analytical framework.

▼ This dissertation examines the Truth About Cuba Committee (TACC) and their calculated attempts to manage the distribution of information about Cuba to Americans from 1961 to 1975. The TACC lead Cuban exile
media activism by disseminating anti-Cuban Revolution information and thwarting what they deemed to be communist propaganda. In doing so, the TACC orchestrated political campaigns to alter the U.S. news
media landscape and to pit sectors of the U.S. against the Castro regime.
To investigate this phenomenon, this study is guided by the following questions: what strategies, rhetoric, and coalitions did the TACC develop to shape U.S. public opinion and pit the U.S. against the Cuban state? How did the TACC lead other Cuban exile organizations and influential Americans, particularly ones with conservative values, in this endeavor? How does the TACC represent an engagement with conservative politics, which was unorthodox for their Latina/
o activists contemporaries? In seeking out the answers to these questions, this dissertation argues that the TACC compelled news
media professionals, U.S. authorities, organization leaders, and educators to exercise their authority to prohibit pro-Revolution portrayals and to send anti-Castro messages to audiences, the state, organizations’ networks, and U.S. students. In sum, the TACC sought to tarnish the reputation of the Revolution by facilitating the production and dissemination of anti-Castro information, for example, persuading news
media professionals, or by prohibiting the distribution of pro-Revolution portrayals, like provoking U.S. officials to act as a regulatory body.
To increase their chances for success, the TACC purposefully targeted and eagerly emboldened anti-communists, Republicans, and Cuban exiles. In order to rally their support, the TACC formed race-, gender-, and class-based solidarity with Americans and utilized exile camaraderie with Cuban organizations. Without a megaphone of their own, the TACC relied on established networks, like broadcast
media and national organizations, to relay their anti-Revolution message and hinder the dissemination of pro-Cuban state messages.

Media reporting of suicide can be both a risk factor and a protective factor, since (ir)responsible reporting of suicide can have different effects on vulnerable people. Furthermore, online media takes on an increasingly important role in the life of an individual and that is among other factors the result of special features that distinguish online media from other types of media. For this reason, we wanted to conduct a research about the reporting of suicide in Slovenian online media. We were particularly interested in the extent of online media following the recommended professional guidelines. Namely, we wanted to find out how much suicide-protective impact is there in online reporting on suicide and what type of readers’ comments are there under these media articles.
The research included 114 media articles with the topic of suicide that were published from 1st January 2017 to 31st December 2017 by 24ur, MMC RTV and SiolNET online media. The research also included 2,544 readers’ comments. Based on the results, the sample…

This research focuses on the newsy production of the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo between the years of 1940 e 1945. During this period the newspaper suffered the intervention of the government (Estado Novo, 1937-1945) and went through changes in its structure that was seeking for self-legitimation of the regime among the readers of the journal. Among these transformations wrought by the new direction, the column Notícias do Rio stands out for constituting a privileged space for Estado Novo to build its self-image. These changes were to meet a social media project elaborated by the federal government in order to impose its will to the journal, especially when considering the context of its relationship with press (silences, incitements) experienced during the period. Much more than an example of strength of the regime, the intervention of the periodical assumes, in this analysis, the result of a long conflict among political groups that battled for its maintenance in power. Nevertheless, it has not stopped the leaders of the newspaper from building a situational relationship with Vargas characterized by moments of support and moments of combat against his government. With the introduction of Estado Novo in 1937, the leaders of OESP suffered some prosecutions and deportations, assuming the intervention of the journal, the ultimate hit…

▼ The Brazilian press was late born, 276 years after the start of the American colony occupation by the Portuguese Crown. Investigating the particularities of this process in the Northeast region, there is an intention to rescue the genesis of typographic activities in Maranhão, which milestone is the newspapers O Conciliador do Maranhão that was issued between November 1821 and July 1823. The objective of this is to identify the sociocultural factors that explain the delay of the press in the State. To do so, it was performed a historical research adopting double methodological strategy: a) qualitative: in order to comprehend the circumstances that contributed to delay the arrival of press to the maranhense capital, conditioning the nature of arising journalistic production; b) quantitative: aiming to reconstruct the journalistic profile, the editorial politic and the morphologic structure of the pioneer newspaper, through content analysis of a sample from that periodic.(AU)

▼ This master dissertation presents the results of a research whose purpose was to organize and analyse the articles and editorials about Secondary Education published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo (OESP) from 1972 to 1977, when the educational reform 5692 was implemented. We aimed to examine how this newspaper, which always had Education as one of its principal themes in its pages, printed the reform and reacted to the governments reform and its implementation. Due to the military dictatorship, the approaches of the articles and editorials published in OESP vary between a soft and hard tone, a tendency found in the Brazilian media. When the political program distensão - a gradual relaxation of the authoritarian rule - takes place in the country, the editorials and articles, that before only showed the difficulties to implement the reform in the Brazilian States, started to criticize openly the government and to show that the reform was a failure. At this period, OESP interviewed people from several social fields to speak about the Secondary Educational System. Lack of educational facilities and financial aid were pointed as the reason of the failure of the reform. Besides that, the newspaper OESP shows that its ideas about Secondary Education are opposed to the reform proposed by the government. The former is for academic studies whereas the latter for a technical education
