▼ The increasingly serious pedestrian safety issue in the City of Austin aroused the concern. Other than conducting quantitative analysis at aggregate level via collecting and examining the secondary data extracted from the existing datasets, the authors shifted towards the disaggregate level analysis, focusing on twenty-six hotspots of pedestrian collisions via mixed method research. Qualitative data was collected in the
field survey to precisely capture the contextual features of collision locations, and was interpreted and coded as explanatory variables for the quantitative analysis. Instead of the frequency of pedestrian collision, crash rate measured by incident count per million pedestrians was the dependent variable to identify the factors truly influencing the pedestrian safety issue, not just the total number of walkers. The stepwise bivariate analysis and negative binomial regression examined the association between pedestrian collision rate and independent variables. Finally, the average block length, speed limit posted, sidewalk condition, and the degree of proximity to major pedestrian attractors were statistically significant factors correlating with the pedestrian collision risk.

▼ The Dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas) is an endangered antelope in North Africa whose range is now restricted to a few small populations in arid, semi-desert conditions. To be effective, conservation efforts require fundamental information about the species, especially its abundance, distribution and genetic factors. Prior to this study, there was a paucity of such data relating to the Dorcas gazelle in Libya and the original contribution of this study is to begin to fill this gap. The aim of this study is to develop strategies for the conservation management of Dorcas gazelle in post-conflict North East Libya. In order to achieve this aim, five objectives relating to current population status, threats to the species, population genetics, conservation and strategic population management were identified. These were explored using three distinct methods: questionnaires, a distance sampling field survey and genetic analysis. The findings from both the questionnaires and the field survey indicated that there had been a significant decrease in the population in the study area compared to historical records from the 1970s. The respondents to the questionnaire estimated the decrease in the wild gazelle population to be in the range of 80% and 100% following the conflict in Libya in 2011. The responses also indicated that the main threat to the survival of Dorcas gazelle is illegal hunting and that, to reverse the decline, protected areas should be established and protection laws enforced. The respondents also believed that local communities and international conservation efforts are necessary, including captive breeding and reintroduction programmes. The findings suggested that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classification of Dorcas gazelle in Libya should be revised from 'Endangered' to 'Critically Endangered' and conservation efforts increased. Questionnaire and distance sampling methods gave different population estimates at 233 and 1070 respectively, with the distance sampling results considered to be the more accurate. The genetic analysis of the sampled Dorcas gazelle population from North East Libya found eight haplotypes, four of which have not been identified elsewhere, indicating a unique genetic diversity. This suggests that, at present, there is no major risk of a genetic bottleneck. The strategic management outcomes identified seven intervention strategies: declaration of the study area as a protected area, protection laws, awareness-raising, research and monitoring, supplementary feeding, captive breeding and international cooperation, each of theses upported by short-, medium- and long-term activities. However, achieving these requires input from local and international stakeholders and experts in a way that reflects the IUCN's 'One Plan' approach.

▼ The late 1800s Bitterroot Valley, Montana, landscape and settlement patterns were summarized and mapped using the General Land Office (GLO) surveyors' field notes. Surveyors' observations of six townships from Hamilton to the Stevensville vicinity were examined in several ways. A total of 3321 points of ecological and geographic information and 422 miles of vegetation were mapped from the field notes. Surveyor information, vegetation composition, tree abundance, vegetation spatial structure and distribution of vegetation types were characterized in a multi-part historic vegetation data assemblage of point, line and polygon feature classes. Aquatic, topographic and cultural aspects of the area contributed to the historic landscape configuration. A GLO land cover classification was derived using surveyors' terminology and crosswalked with current land cover classes. The culmination of this research produced historic vegetation maps and evaluations, summaries of historic cultural, topographic and aquatic features and an unpretentious comparison of GLO vegetation to current land cover. GLO vegetation along all section lines compared to current land cover revealed differences between historic and current vegetation conditions. Highest differences were decreases in Upland Timber and Prairie-No Timber, and increases in GLO Field and Bottomland Timber near-equivalents. The current conditions of land that surveyors described as GLO Upland Timber and Prairie-No Timber were reported. The methodology applied to the Bitterroot Valley could be used to map extensive areas of Montana, providing quantitative and descriptive observations of a pre-satellite landscape.

Air Traffic Safety
aerodromu. Primena predloženog alata ilustrovana je na primeru
Aerodroma „Nikola Tesla” u Beogradu. Anketiranjem zaposlenih na
evropskim aerodromima odgovornih za sprovođenje mera istraživani
su: glavni problemi vezani za buku vazduhoplova na aerodromima;
efekata postojećih mera i problema u njihovoj primeni, predložena
Tesla” u Beogradu s realnim podacima.

▼ Hepatitis B (HB) is vaccine-preventable but remains a leading cause of liver disease worldwide. Since the 1980s, Canadians have received HB vaccination through publicly-funded programs in childhood however 20-25% of Canadians are foreign-born (FB) and may experience barriers to vaccine uptake. This study assesses differences in HB vaccine coverage between FB and Canadian-born (CB) individuals using Statistics Canada’s Canadian Health
Measures Survey data. The three-year (2007-2011) vaccination coverage among FB Canadians was estimated at 38%, which was significantly lower than the estimate rate for CB sub-population (49%). After adjustment for covariates, immigration status remained a significant predictor of vaccination. Furthermore, the effect of immigration status on vaccination status was modified by birth era such that the relative difference in vaccination coverage was greater among those born in the era of childhood HB vaccination programs (1980s and after) compared to older Canadians. Opportunities for education on the availability of HB vaccination may benefit new Canadians.

▼ In this thesis we explore the theme of automata,
measures on spaces of sequences X^N
in a finite alphabet X, and their connections. The notion of a finite-state measure (a measure
given by a finite automaton, or equivalently, having a finite number of sections) is introduced,
and applied to the problem of studying the images of Markov
measures under the
action of tree automorphisms given by automata. Another approach, based on prior work
by Kravchenko, is also applied to this problem to compute the Radon-Nikodym derivative
in the case when the automaton has polynomial growth, and to compute frequencies by
using a lift to (S x X)^N.
The question of when the image of a finite-state measure under the action of a noninvertible
automaton is answered. We also explore when a finite-state measure is Gibbs.
For the second part of the thesis, we introduce the notion of the automatic logarithm,
and a measure associated with it. We compute this measure for certain interesting examples,
in which it turns out to be finite-state.

▼ The unemployment rate is an important indicator with both social and economic dimensions considered to signify a country’s social and economic wellbeing. For its measurement the European Union Labour Force Survey (EU-LFS) is using a synthesized economic construct according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) conventional definitions of the employed, unemployed and inactive. In this dissertation, people’s perceptions of their employment status as they compared to the ILO conventional definitions were investigated in order to decide whether or not conflicting and coinciding perceptions differed overtime within-nations and cross-nationally. The analysis was based on the 2008-2015 annual datasets for sixteen European countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden. The detailed examination of the demographic and social “profile” of Europeans’ coinciding and conflicting perceptions to the ILO conventional definitions revealed that the pattern of the demographic and social “profile” of conflicting perceptions within each country was in the main systematic overtime. But the surprisingly high percentages of Europeans’ perceptions of their employment status in agreement with the ILO conventional definitions indicated that this question should precede and not follow the questions on the labour status according to the ILO conventional definitions or the questions on the registration at the public employment office as is the Eurostat instruction to participating countries. Also, two alternative definitions of the employment status were formulated as variations of the ILO conventional definitions. Comparison of these alternative measurements to the ILO conventional measure and the self-perceived measurement resulted in different distributions of the employment status. The investigation of the demographic and social “profile” of the unemployed resulting from the application of the self-perceived measurement and the two alternative measurements to the ILO conventional definitions of the employment status showed that they did differ. The more changes were identified overtime and at the national level for the demographic variables gender and age than the social variables marital status and level of educational attainment. Furthermore, the application of the two alternative measurements to the EU-LFS data resulted in an increase of the official unemployment rate in all countries. More remarked was the increase in the cases of Belgium, Hungary, Ireland, Italy and especially that of Romania. In all countries, the unemployment rate as defined by the ILO increased when the self-perceived measurement was applied except in the case of the Netherlands. The resulting increase was higher in the cases of Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy and Portugal. The results are reported for the age group 15-74 so as to allow for comparability with the ILO conventional definition of unemployment. This methodological study contributes to the growing…

▼ Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is second leading cause of death in Canada. Diabetes is a major risk factor for CVD, which is affecting more than 7.5% of Canadians. Prevention is important to reducing the burden of diabetes and CVD on the individual, society and health care sector. In order to prevent these diseases, identifying people at high risk and using modifiable factors in prevention of these diseases are the priority. The metabolic syndrome (MetS), CVD risk and cardiovascular age gap (CAG) are concepts, which have been recommended by national health organizations for identifying individuals with high risk of developing these diseases. Diet has been recognized as an important modifiable factor in the prevention of metabolic disorders, diabetes and CVD. The aim of the present thesis was to determine the prevalence of diabetes, MetS components, MetS and the mean risk of 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and CAG. Further, the association between MetS, 10-year ASCVD risk and CAG and dietary patterns among Canadian adults were determined. The Canadian Health
Measures Survey (CHMS) combined Cycles 1 & 2 (2007-11) data were used to address these research objectives.
In CHMS, the FFQ was used to determine the usual dietary intake among Canadians. Principal component analysis method was applied to extract the dietary patterns from 32 food/food groups available from CHMS data. Controlling for potential covariates, logistic and linear regression was used to determine the association between MetS, 10-year ASCVD risk and CAG and dietary patterns. To produce nationally representative results, weighting and bootstrapping were applied.
The MetS prevalence was 16.9% among a sample representative of 26,038,108 Canadians aged 12-79 years. Four prevalent dietary patterns were extracted and the “Fast food” dietary pattern with positive loadings of hotdogs, sausage/bacon, chips, fries, and diet soft drinks, had a significant association with MetS (odds ratio=1.26; 95% CI: 1.016 to 1.55; p=0.035) for older adults aged 50-79 year.
The mean 10-year ASCVD risk was 6.9% for a sample representative of 13,655,671 Canadians aged 40-79y. The mean vascular age for men was 4.1 years older and for females was 0.4 years younger than their chronological age. Four dietary patterns emerged from this population of 40-79 years. Of note, the “High carbohydrate and protein” dietary pattern, which included potatoes, red meat, sausage, egg and ice-cream/frozen yoghurt, was adversely associated with 10-year ASCVD (Ptrend= 0.0128). Further, the “Healthy” and “Fast food” dietary patterns had an inverse (p<0.0001) and direct (p=0.005) association, respectively, with CAG adjusted for potential covariates.
A considerable portion of Canadian adults had high relative and absolute ASCVD risk. Dietary patterns prevalent among the population that were associated with MetS, CAG and ASCVD 10-year risk were unhealthy. Thus, interventions with focus on educating Canadians, especially high-risk groups, with the aim of promoting a healthier balanced…

▼ Canada fortifies certain products with folic acid and has periconceptional supplementation guidelines – policies designed to improve folate status and reduce the incidence of poor birth outcomes. Though optimal folate concentrations have been linked to health benefits, concerns have been raised regarding potential associations with adverse health outcomes. Direct biochemical assessment of the folate status of Canadians based on a nationally representative sample has not been done in more than 40 years. The overall purpose of this research was to investigate the folate status of the Canadian population.
All analyses used the nationally representative 2007–2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). Red blood cell (RBC) folate was measured by Immulite 2000 immunoassay. Key findings indicate that folate deficiency (<305 nmol/L) was virtually non-existent in the Canadian population (6–79 years old). Still, one-fifth of women of childbearing age (WCBA; 15–45 years old) had sub-optimal concentrations for the prevention of neural tube defects (<906 nmol/L). Folic acid supplement intake was a primary determinant of WCBA achieving a RBC folate concentration ≥906 nmol/L. A distinct shift towards elevated RBC folate concentrations emerged. Three hypothetical cut-offs (1450 nmol/L, 1800 nmol/L and 2150 nmol/L) were examined to create dialogue since a universal definition of high RBC folate concentration does not exist. Females, participants aged 60¬–79 years, and those who were overweight or obese had the greatest prevalence of having high RBC folate at each cut-off. We conducted the first national-level comparison of RBC folate concentrations between the United States and Canada. Two different folate assay methods – microbiologic assay (NHANES) and Immulite 2000 immunoassay (CHMS) – necessitated the application of a conversion equation. Median Canadian RBC folate concentrations (adjusted to microbiologic assay) were lower than those of Americans but unadjusted Canadian median RBC folate values were higher. Canadian WCBA were less likely than American WCBA to have RBC folate ≥906 nmol/L, though Canadian WCBA with unadjusted RBC folate values were more likely to achieve this cut-off.
These results indicate a need for strategies targeting WCBA to improve compliance with folic acid supplement recommendations. The strength and necessity of supplements for the general population should be re-assessed. Further, harmonization of folate measurement procedures in future surveillance efforts would support comparisons and inform policy directions.

▼ AIM: This study compared the consumption of proinflammatory foods, as measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores, between those with late stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) and individuals without CKD and between men and women with late stage CKD, in a Canadian nationally representative sample. METHOD: The current study used data from the Canadian Health
Measures Survey – Cycle 3.
RESULTS: T-tests revealed significant differences in the DII scores between individuals without CKD and those with late stage CKD, as well as between men and women with late stage CKD. A linear regression revealed that DII scores predicted eGFR in the general population. In separate regressions, DII scores predicted BMI and high cholesterol, even after controlling for other factors. CONCLUSION: This study contributes to current research on CKD and may lead to dietary prevention strategies.

▼ A multi-dimensional measure of organizational culture in child welfare was developed in this study. It continued development of Ellett’s (2000) professional organizational culture measure, the only known measure of organizational culture in
child welfare agencies. The newly created scale expanded upon Ellett’s examination of professional dimensions of organizational culture as a factor related to retention of child welfare employees by creating a new measure of the broader concept of
organizational culture in child welfare agencies more comprehensively than the one created and used by Ellett in two previous studies (Ellett, 2000; Ellett et al., 2003). This newly created, comprehensive measure of organizational culture for use in
child welfare agencies, the Child Welfare Organizational Culture Inventory (CWOCI), was administered to all Georgia DFCS child welfare employees at the county level in an effort to examine initial measurement reliability and validity estimates using
Ellett’s Intent to Remain Employed – Child Welfare scale (IRE) (Ellett, 2000; Ellett, et al., 2003) as a measure of criterion-related validity. Principal Components Analysis identified seven empirical dimensions of organizational culture that explained
45.7% of the total item variance. The seven dimensions demonstrated internal consistency reliabilities (Cronbach’s Alphas) ranging from .47 to .97. Criterion-related validity estimates of the Child Welfare Organizational Culture Inventory were examined
using subjects’ expressed intentions to remain employed in child welfare as measured by the Intent to Remain Employed – Child Welfare measure and a variety of statistical analyses: simple bivariate correlations, stepwise regression analysis, and
discriminant function analysis. Furthermore, the study also furthers our understanding of the relationship between organizational culture and (a) organizational characteristics (county geographic type [rural, suburban, and urban] and caseload size) and
(b) child welfare employees’ personal characteristics (years experience working in child welfare) using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test procedures.

▼ Signal retiming is an appealing strategy for improving network performance because it does not require the addition of new roadway capacity. The emergence of Bluetooth technology presents an alternative method of collecting travel time data to evaluate the implementation of signal retiming measures along an arterial corridor via a before-and-after study. As opposed to the industry standard of collecting a limited number of travel times via dedicated travel time runs using vehicles equipped with GPS data loggers, Bluetooth technology allows for a much greater number of travel times to be collected from a wider range of vehicles and drivers. However, the need persists for a practitioner-ready methodology that details how data collected in this manner should be used to evaluate signal retiming measures. This need formed the basis upon which this investigation was conducted.
Both field and simulated arterial corridors were examined in this research. The field corridor consisted of a 15.1-kilometre long section of Victoria Park Avenue located in Toronto, Ontario that contained 37 signalized intersections. Seven Bluetooth detectors were deployed to collect data, meaning that the corridor was divided into six links. GPS probe runs were also available for comparison. The simulated corridor consisted of a 4.8-kilometre long section of Hespeler Road in Cambridge, Ontario that contained 12 signalized intersections. Three Bluetooth detectors were deployed to collect data, meaning that the corridor was divided into two links. GPS probe runs were also simulated.
Bluetooth travel times were available at the path level (i.e. travel times of vehicles that traversed the entire length of the arterial corridor) and at the link level (i.e. travel times of vehicles that traversed only part of the corridor). To develop measures of effectiveness for evaluating signal retiming measures, the merits of each of these data sets for this purpose were first identified. Through statistical testing, it was found to be infeasible to use the travel times of vehicles that traversed the entire corridor for signal retiming evaluation due to the small number of travel times collected. Instead, a corridor should be subdivided into links through the placement of multiple Bluetooth detectors to increase the number of travel times collected.
Next, recommendations regarding the characteristics of a signal retiming study were proposed. A regression model was developed using the field data to allow a practitioner to estimate the duration of the data collection period based on the characteristics of the corridor. Using the results produced by applying this regression model to the field data, recommendations were provided for the spacing of detectors.
Next, measures of effectiveness to assess the impacts of signal retiming were developed. The recommended measures incorporated the difference in the means of the Before and After travel time data, the number of vehicles that traversed each link of the corridor, and statistical significance of the difference in…

▼ Malaria is a leading cause of sickness and deaths in globally especially among children and pregnant women with majority (90%) of cases being in Africa. The prevalence of Malaria in Kenya is 8% with the highest prevalence (28%) being in Lake Endemic region (KMIS 2015). Successful reduction of malaria burden in an area requires knowledge of vector species present. The main objective of this study was to determine the entomological indicators of malaria in Busia County which is within the Lake endemic zone. Three sub-counties of Busia (Bunyala, Teso South and Matayos) were sampled and mosquitos were collected using light traps, Pyrethrum spray catches, Aspiration and human landing catches in 28 houses in each sub-county. Collected mosquitos were identified using taxonomical keys and through PCR and also analyzed for blood meal and sporozoites through ELISA. Results showed that An.arabiensis was the predominant species followed by An.gambiae with a heterogeneous distribution, P <0.001 (x2 = 39.37, df = 6). The indoor resting density of anopheles mosquitoes was 9 mosquitoes/house/day while the human biting rate was 1 mosquito/person/day. The main source of blood meal was human (27%) and bovine (12%), p <0.001 (x2=47.656, df=9). The sporozoite rate was 7% and annual EIR, 13 infective bites/person/year meaning a person is likely to get 13 episodes of malaria in a year. The main breeding habitat for Anopheles was small water pools. In conclusion, the primary malaria vectors in Busia are An.arabiensis and An.gambiae s.s. The indoor resting density is high and reduction can be achieved through indoor residual spraying. The presence of sporozoite and Anopheles species fed on human blood underscore the malaria endemicity status of Busia County. The findings of this study provide important information for control of malaria in Busia County.

▼ This study was a survey of budgetary control practices in management of secondary schools in Meru North region in Kenya. The theory of budgeting, accounting, budgetary control theory and the school based budgeting model were reviewed under the theoretical framework. Determinants of budgetary control were examined after which an empirical review of the study variables was done both globally and locally. A descriptive survey design was adopted to capture the categorical description of population attitudes. Sample size of the study consisted of 160 secondary schools in Meru North Region. The sample size constituted 75 secondary schools in Meru North Region. Out of the selected schools, convenience sampling was used to select 2 respondents from the schools to make a total sample size of the respondents to be 150. Both open and closed semi-structured questionnaires were used for data collection. Secondary data sources were used to supplement the data collected from questionnaires. Validity and reliability were determined. Data was analysed to establish the measures of central tendency that include the mean, mode, and median highlighting the key findings. Inferential statistics was used to establish the relationship between the variables of the study and qualitatively by content analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the significance relationship of the variables. Regression analysis was used to determine the extent to which budgetary control affects management of educational institutions in Meru North District in Kenya. The study established positive relationship between management of secondary institutions and budgetary control practices by the schools. In establishing the time period covered by budgets, the study found that majority (65.15%) of schools in Meru north region review budget after 1 to 5 years. Pertaining the annual budget revenue, it was found that 55.07% of the secondary schools in Meru north region have approximate budget revenue of Ksh.1,200,000 - 3,600,000 per annum while the study found that none of the school budget holders‟ disagreed that there were no objectives in the budget while results are linked to programs and school activities. On the impact of evaluation on budgetary control practices in management of secondary schools, the study found schools involves all key players in decisions about budget and the management of the schools review the budget as the respondents strongly agreed at 44% respectively. The study recommended frequent budget review as soon as possible, further recommended capacity building courses for schools BoM members through the ministry of education in Kenya, both internal and external evaluations be done regularly to ensure school finances are prudently utilized as per the school‟s education objectives while nomination of BoMs members prioritize those versed with financial management concepts and demonstrate highest integrity. A study is recommended to evaluate the adoption of common technology software and advanced accounting systems in the management…

▼ Cryptographic and authentication applications in application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and
field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), as well as codes for the activation of on-chip features, require the use of embedded secret information. The generation of secret bitstrings using physical unclonable functions, or PUFs, provides several distinct advantages over conventional methods, including the elimination of costly non-volatile memory, and the potential to increase the random bits available to applications. In this dissertation, a Hardware-Embedded Delay PUF (HELP) is proposed that is designed to leverage path delay variations that occur in the core logic macros of a chip to create random bitstrings. A thorough discussion is provided of the operational details of an embedded path timing structure called REBEL that is used by HELP to provide the timing functionality upon which HELP relies for the entropy source for the cryptographic quality of the bitstrings. Further details of the FPGA-based implementation used to prove the viability of the HELP PUF concept are included, along with a discussion of the evolution of the techniques employed in realizing the final PUF engine design. The bitstrings produced by a set of 30 FPGA boards are evaluated with regard to several statistical quality metrics including uniqueness, randomness, and stability. The stability characteristics of the bitstrings are evaluated by subjecting the FPGAs to commercial-grade temperature and power supply voltage variations. In particular, this work evaluates the reproducibility of the bitstrings generated at 0C, 25C, and 70C, and 10% of the rated supply voltage. A pair of error avoidance schemes are proposed and presented that provide significant improvements to the HELP PUF's resiliency against bit-flip errors in the bitstrings.

▼ Renovating the European building stock has for
almost two decades been a matter of importance to the European
Union. Reduction of energy use for existing buildings can be
achieved through applying energy efficiency renovation measures.
Besides this, there is quite a large renovation need in Sweden due
to building materials and services reaching (or having passed) the
end of their service life.Incorrectly implemented, renovation
measures can have negative impacts on the state of the building,
and so can the lack of maintenance measures. In order to avoid
negative outcomes, impacts of possible renovation and maintenance
measures need to be evaluated. It is also important to be able to
predict these impacts and therefore important to acquire data on
them, but also more knowledge on how to isolate the impacts of such
measures through field measurements. This thesis aims to assess the
impact of relevant and applicable renovation or maintenance
measures for buildings in temperate climates, primarily through
field measurements. This thesis also aims to illuminate the process
of field measurements for acquiring data for the assessment of
renovation and maintenance measures. The empirical base for this
has included five case studies on renovation or maintenance
measures that are relevant for Swedish buildings, and a literature
review. In order to illuminate the process of field measurements
for the assessment of the impact that renovation and maintenance
measures has on a building, this thesis has analyzed the research
procedure in five case studies that have included such assessments.
These case studies included measures that impacted on the energy
use, the indoor environmental quality, and/or the moisture safety
of a building. The thesis compares the setups of the field
measurements in the case studies, discusses the details of the
field measurements, the limitations in each study and the
consequences thereof, and the knowledge that was gained through the
analyses that were conducted. This empirical data, gained from
these analyses, formed the basis for the illumination of the
overall method for the assessment of renovation and maintenance
measures through field measurements. The results in the included
case studies show that the measures that have been evaluated have a
beneficial impact on the energy use, and some also on the indoor
environment. However, it is important to consider possible risks
with implementing the measures in order to avoid negative outcomes.
The case studies show that it is possible to determine the impact
through field measurements, with accuracy. The analysis of the
procedures in the case studies in this thesis shows that different
measurement setups require different types of analyses in order to
determine the impact of the measure. If field measurements are
conducted on an object (e.g. a building) before and after the
implementation of a measure, control parameters should be measured
simultaneously in order to determine the impact of changes in these
parameters on the object and thereby isolate the…

▼ Objectives: Although the smoking prevalence continues to decline in New Zealand (NZ) overall, little is known about smoking in university students. A 2013 survey of students aged 17-25 years found that 14% were current smokers, and 3% daily smokers. However, the sample did not include students from all NZ universities. This study examines the prevalence and patterns of cigarette smoking among students aged 18-24 years.
Setting: University students across NZ.
Methods: Data came from a March to May 2018 survey of students from all NZ universities, and were weighted to account for undersampling and oversampling, based on gender and university size. χ 2 tests were used to compare smoking by age, gender and ethnicity.
Participants: 1476 participants were included: 919 (62.3%) aged 18-20 years and 557 (37.7%) aged 21-24 years; 569 (38.6%) male and 907 (61.4%) female; and 117 (7.9%) Māori and 1359 (92.1%) non-Māori. \
Results: 49.8% (95% CI 47.2 to 52.4) of respondents reported ever smoking, 11.1% (95% CI 9.5 to 12.9) currently smoked (smoked at least once a month) and 5.9% (95% CI 4.8 to 7.3) smoked at least daily (daily smokers). Of current smokers, 63.6% smoked 1-5 cigarettes/day, 45.8% smoked daily, 73.4% smoked first cigarette >60 min after waking, 86.0% never/almost never smoked in indoor and 64.6% in outdoor smokefree spaces, 69.9% planned to quit and 32.4% had tried to quit. Ever, current and daily smoking were significantly higher in 21-24 compared with 18-20 years olds, and in males compared with females. Older participants were more likely to report smoking more cigarettes/day. Māori were more likely to report ever smoking than non-Māori.
Conclusions: Current smoking among NZ university students aged 18-24 years appears to be declining but daily smoking could be increasing. However, many students appeared less addicted to nicotine, and willing to quit. We recommend increasing the availability of smokefree services for students who wish to quit.

▼ Exploratory characterization of a novel mobile game battery was conducted via a correlational comparison with a standardized assessment of executive functioning. Previous literature has shown that computer-based and survey-based instruments have either very weak correlation or no correlation at all – giving the impression that these instruments may not measure the same constructs of executive functioning. Findings from the current exploratory study demonstrated significant associations but weak correlational strength between tasks from the computer-based game battery and an updated standardized survey-based instrument. This confirmed a trend found in previous literature, demonstrating little overlap between both instruments in executive functioning measurement. Individual congruency effects and sequential congruency effects from the game battery were not found to have any significant correlation with the survey-based instrument. Results from this study will be used to direct continuing development of the game battery, and reduce measurement differences between computer-based and survey-based executive functioning assessments.

▼ The macroscopic properties of materials are predicted from the microstructure using the topological
measures. In this thesis, we measured various types of topological
measures in both the transient and steady state regimes. We evaluated the steady state distributions of grain size, the number of faces, the number edges and the number vertices per grain from two different types of phase-
field grain growth models proposed by Kim et al. and Chen et al. The large-scale three dimensional grain growth simulations were performed using parallel computing technique.
We invented the novel methods to measure the integrated mean curvature of the grain surface, the triple line length and the dihedral angle between adjacent grain faces. These methods are applicable for grain structure described by a voxel-based microstructure representation (VBMR), such as those generated by phase-
field simulations, Monte Carlo Potts models, or three-dimensional reconstructions of experimentally measured grain structures. We measured those characteristics and proposed analytic expressions that allow the prediction of mean width and triple line length with respect to the normalized grain size from the normalized grain size. Additionally, the MacPherson-Srolovitz relation was examined using the evaluated mean curvature and triple line length values.
The grain boundary pinning force applied by a second-phase particle was precisely measured from the grain boundary morphology in a three-dimensional system. The dragging forces exerted by spherical and ellipsoidal second-phase particle were examined using the forces estimated from the grain boundary geometry. The particle pinning forces applied by cuboidal particles were evaluated and compared with the pinning forces that were estimated from the derived expression. In addition, the effect of the second-phase particle morphology on two-dimensional grain growth kinetics was examined.

▼ The rapid development of digital information technology has led interactive technology products to a revolutionary and innovational era. Multimedia and intermedium have nourishing digital art and bring out amazing possibilities. Therefore, âinteractivityâ has become one of the most important issues in digital art.
In the meanwhile, artists have given the subjectivity and the interpretation of performing right to viewers which trigger several interactive forms. Flow experience has become the priority that artists long to bring to viewers when viewers walk through reality and virtual world. In sum, how to design an appropriate interactive mechanism to let viewers immerse in flow experience is the primary research
field in this paper.
In this research we implement
field survey of customer insight research methodology, and record viewerâs behaviors and experiences in different exhibitions. The main
survey field wasãTHE DELIGHT OF CHINESE CHARACTER FESTIVAL 2013ã in Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung city. Except observing the viewers and exhibition, we also interview several artists, curators and viewers. We examine and analyze data collected from
field survey according to Csikszentmihalyiâs flow theory and other solid theories.
In the conclusion, we propose eight experience indicators of how to design appropriate interactive works and categorize the diversity between general art and digital art.
However, there are seven indicators which are the key factors bringing viewers into flow experience. We suggest that in the phases of prototypes and testing, artists should examine whether their works meet the indicators criteria which bring viewers positive experiences.

▼ This project evaluated a 90 acre parcel of property located on the southern shore of Orange Lake in NCFL (North Central Florida). A cultural resource management style
survey was conducted to determine what archeological evidence for prehistoric activity was present. In addition to this general assessment, this research was conducted in order to identify specific settlement patterns in the area and determine if they corresponded with the settlement strategies already identified for wetland environments within the area of north central Florida. Further, after a tool stone procurement zone was identified a study examining debitage size grade drop-off trends was conducted in an effort to separate quarrying and non-quarrying activity areas. The
field work was conducted by excavating shovel test units 50 by 50 centimeters square and one meter deep. These were completed with a two person crew utilizing a shovel and quarter inch screen. Observations during each shovel test were recorded, artifacts bagged, and the unit location was recorded using a GPS unit. In the lab, artifacts were sorted based on sets of characteristics for each artifact type. Particular interest was awarded to debitage by sorting it into one of four screen size categories. Further separation was based on chert type and thermal alteration. These data were evaluated in terms of a distance drop-off model using correlation to explore proximity to local chert sources. The results of these tests proved there was not a sole quarry location in the northwest corner of the property as originally speculated but instead that raw tool stone had once outcropped along the entire length of the shore line. The drop-off tests reinforced the knowledge that chipped stone refuse generated at a quarrying site is unique to this site type. This means that the proportion of debitage size grades and frequency of thermally altered material changes in a predictable manner the further a shovel test is from the original stone source, as do the types of stone tools. In conclusion, raw tool stone acquisition and the manufacturing of tools from this source was of great importance for the prehistoric people of the area. The discovery of solid evidence for habitation beginning in the Early Archaic and growing in intensity forward into the Mississippian also showed Orange Lake was exploited throughout prehistory for the access to tool quality chert as well as fresh water and the ecotone environment of hardwood hammocks and prominent wetlands.

▼ Fourteen cucurbit species of unknown susceptibility representing 12 genera were inoculated with Stagonosporopsis citrulli in Charleston, SC, in spring 2015, spring 2016 and fall 2016 to evaluate their level of susceptibility to gummy stem blight and the ability of the pathogen to reproduce on crown cankers. Coccinia grandis was highly resistant to gummy stem blight. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of susceptibility to gummy stem blight of 14 species, which expands the host range of S. citrulli to 37 species representing 21 genera in the family Cucurbitaceae. Crown cankers were found to be important reproductive sites for S. citrulli.
A
survey of foliar pathogens of watermelon based on two-stage cluster sampling was conducted on 60 commercial farms in South Carolina from spring 2015 to fall 2017. The influence of environmental and management factors on the occurrence of foliar pathogens was analyzed. Estimates for the statewide probability of pathogen occurrence on symptomatic leaves were obtained. Six fungal pathogens, an oomycete and three viral pathogens were identified. With the exception of fall 2017, Stagonosporopsis spp. was the most prevalent pathogen in every season followed by P. xanthii. Myrothecium s.l. was the most common pathogen in fall 2017. In fall 2017, the third most common pathogen was Corynespora cassiicola. Eight of 80 isolates of Stagonosporopsis spp. were identified as S. caricae, the rest as S. citrulli. This is the first report of C. cassiicola, S. caricae, and Myrothecium s.l. on watermelon in South Carolina. There was a consistent increased probability of occurrence of Stagonosporopsis spp. in fields with a previous cucurbit crop, increasing probabilities of pathogen occurrence with increasing plant age, a lower probability of occurrence of some pathogens on triploid cultivars compared to diploid cultivars, and a decrease in probability of pathogen occurrence in fields aligned towards southwest or west.
Six species of Stachybotriaceae were identified in a collection of 95 isolates obtained from 11 fields in South Carolina using Bayesian inference based on combined sequences of four partial gene regions. Two species, Gregatothecium humicola and Paramyrothecium foliicola were the predominant species found. Within these two species, genetic differences within small spatial scales were detected. In pathogenicity tests the two predominant species were the most virulent on watermelon. Cowpea plants were less susceptible than watermelon and tomato plants, which were equally susceptible. This is the first report of pathogenicity of five of the six identified species of Stachybotriaceae on the three tested vegetable crops and of X. tongaense on watermelon.

▼ This thesis presents observations of dusty, luminous, high redshift galaxies using mid Infra-Red and radio observations of samples of galaxies uncovered using the Wide-Field Infra-Red Survey Explorer (WISE) All-Sky Mission. Observations of these galaxies are critical to understanding the evolution of galaxies during the epoch of the peak in mergers and star formation activity. Two samples of galaxies are investigated in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. The galaxies in Chapter 3 were selected using the WISE-All Sky mission, with additional constraints at 1.4 GHz (21 cm) to select for radio-intermediate emission. These galaxies are expected to have radio jets still embedded in their galactic hosts, and the sample within this thesis resides between redshifts of 1.3 < z < 2.9. To understand the nature of the environments that these powerful, luminous galaxies inhabit, the possibility of mergers between nearby galaxies is estimated using mid Infra-Red Spitzer observations over square 5.12' x 5.12' fields. The galaxies in Chapter 4 were also discovered using the WISE-All Sky mission, but with no constraints on their radio power. These galaxies are among the most luminous known, with Infra-Red luminosities in excess of 10¹⁴ L⊙, placing them in the HyLIRG regime. These luminous, dusty galaxies are expected to contain extremely powerful AGN in their centres, heating the surrounding dust to temperatures ≳ 60 K. Using ~ 30 GHz observations of a sample of these galaxies, estimates of their radio properties can be determined to understand the level of free-free and synchrotron emission, and the rates of star formation in the galaxy hosts.

▼ Displacement monitoring of engineering structures is necessary due to the risk of catastrophic outcomes from any failure of such manmade structures. There are many examples of catastrophic structural failure in Australia, such as the accident that occurred during the construction of the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, and the slope failure in Thredbo Village (within Kosciusko National Park, New South Wales). According to the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection, Government of Western Australia, there were 883 wall failure incidents reported from 1994 to 2001. Such incidents demonstrate the necessity of monitoring engineering infrastructure for structural integrity. The main objective of this thesis was to analyse the performance of the Locata technology for displacement monitoring applications. Although the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology such as GPS is popular for 24/7 displacement monitoring, it has difficulties operating in GNSS-challenged areas such as urban canyons, deep valleys, or deep open-cut mines. To overcome GNSS constraints, Locata Corporation's positioning technology Locata was developed to provide highly accurate and precise position solutions.. In order to use the Locata technology in displacement monitoring applications, a prototype Locata Displacement Monitoring System (LDMS) was developed to ensure reliable centimetre-level positioning accuracy using an adaptive fading Kalman filter algorithm. The system and methodology employed for data processing and analysis can be used to monitor the displacement of any appropriately-equipped engineering structure. The Locata positioning system has similar error sources as GNSS. These error sources have to be mitigated for high accuracy use. Mitigation or elimination of these error sources produces reliable coordinate solutions, which are a fundamental requirement for a displacement monitoring system. Tropospheric delay, WiFi interference, multipath, and carrier phase cycle slips are the dominant error sources in Locata range observations. Different tropospheric models were analysed and recommendations have been made on how to effectively remove tropospheric delay. The effects of WiFi interference and multipath are briefly presented. Lastly, a cycle slip detection and correction methodology was developed. As Locata transmits in the ISM band there is high probability of interference of, and by, other technologies that use this band, such as WiFi devices. Evaluating the performance of a Locata positioning system is an important consideration before deploying it in a displacement monitoring application. Zero baseline (ZBL) tests were conducted in order to study the performance of Locata receivers under conditions ranging from benign to hostile (i.e. low to high signal interference). It has been found that even in high interference scenarios, all Locata receivers behave in a similar manner. The performance of a Locata receiver degrades while interference is occurring. A system model is…

▼ Objectives: This thesis examines the risks among Canadian children and adolescents for developing cardio-metabolic diseases, extending evidence that is well-established for adults to pediatric populations. As well, novel indicators and cut-offs for the measurements of disease risks are proposed and associations between physical activity, weight status, socio-economic status and cardio-metabolic health are examined.
Methodology: Secondary data analysis was conducted using data from three cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS), a nationally representative data set which includes measured anthropometric characteristics. A population health approach was applied throughout, underpinned by the World Health Organization’s Conceptual Framework for Action on the Social Determinants of Health. The thesis was designed such that a series of four manuscripts successively built on the key findings from each previous research paper:
1. Establishing the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and its risk factors for 10-18 year olds using the International Diabetes Federation child, adolescent and adult definitions.
2. Estimating pre-obesity epidemic waist circumference reference values for Canadian children 6-10 years using reference data from the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey, the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), and the CHMS through regression of linear, logarithmic and quadratic functions. This work facilitated an expanded age range for the subsequent projects as age- and sex-specific cut-offs based on a Canadian population prior to the obesity epidemic had not been available.
3. Cardio-metabolic risk by body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and a combined BMI-WC indicator quantified the associations between a dichotomous cardio-metabolic risk variable, and obesity, using three indicators of obesity including a novel indicator, for ages 6-18 years.
4. Association between cardio-metabolic risk and inflammation quantified the associations between inflammation, using high-sensitivity c-reactive protein (CRP) as a marker, and cardio-metabolic risk to determine if high CRP was a significant predictor of cardiometabolic risk among 6-18 year olds.
Results: For Paper 1 (n=1228), only 2.1% were classified as having the Mets though 38% had at least 1 MetS risk factor. For Paper 2, logarithmic regression predicted WC cut-offs with the lowest degree of error. For Paper 3 (n=2678), 35% were classified as having cardio-metabolic risk with significantly higher levels among those classified as obese and/or having a low level of physical activity. All indicators of obesity had significant associations with cardio-metabolic risk. For Paper 4 (n=1831), 43.6% of children and 62.0% of adolescents with high CRP levels were classified as having cardio-metabolic risk, a significant relationship. Participants from households with moderate to high income and/or education had the lowest prevalence of MetS risk factors and abdominal obesity.
Conclusions: High CRP is a useful indicator of…
