1. Marques, Juliana Barbosa. Estudo dos contatos oclusais em balanceio quanto a frequência, intensidade e método de avaliação em indivíduos jovens.

Degree: Mestrado, Dentística, 2012, University of São Paulo

An important factor in the study of occlusion refers to the correct detection of the occlusal contacts in the balancing side, intensity and location. However, most studies that proposed itself on detect the presence of balancing contacts used carbon paper led movements in maximal intercuspal to topo a topo. The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of occlusal contacts in the balancing side in 42 young people, with a mean age of 26 years through two methods: 1 - during the masticatory act, using as registration material a mixture of cavity varnish and dust zinc phosphate, 2 - during movements performed, using as registration material carbon. And assess if the methods show similar results. The frequency of occlusal contacts on the balancing side during the masticatory act and using of varnish, was 100% and 97% of patients had bilateral contacts and 3% had presented only unilateral contacts. The frequency of occlusal contacts on the balancing side for the same individuals, however, by analyzing method with carbon and led movements was 76% and 64% of patients had bilateral contacts, 12% had only unilateral and 24 contacts % of patients had no relation to contacts. Regarding the method study, it presented statistical differences between the methods, regardless of the side studied. All differences point to a greater number of contacts on the coating method, indicating that in general this…

Masticatory function in partially edentulous patients after rehabilitation with removable and fixed prosthesis over osseointegrated implants = Função mastigatória de pacientes parcialmente edêntulos após reabilitação com próteses removíveis e fixas sobre implantes osseointegrados: Função mastigatória de pacientes parcialmente edêntulos após reabilitação com próteses removíveis e fixas sobre implantes osseointegrados.

Degree: 2013, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Abstract: Studies revealed the masticatory improvement after the use of prosthesis over dental implants. However, few are those who evaluated the chewing of partially edentulous patients, comparing the masticatory function after treatment with different partial dentures, which was the aim of this paired clinical trial. Therefore, 12 volunteers (8 females, mean age 62.6 ± 7.8 years) presenting total edentulism in maxilla and partial edentulism in the mandible (Kennedy class I) were selected and received, in a sequential way, a conventional removable partial dentures (RPD), implant-retained partial dentures (IRPD) and implant fixed partial denture (IFPD). All treatment were assembled in the mandible and used for 2 months, while the edentulous maxilla received a new complete denture which was used throughout the study. Mastication was assessed by measuring masticatory performance (MP), food comminution index (FCI), maximum bite force (MBF), masseter and temporal muscle thickness, chewing movements, swallowing threshold (ST), masticatory ability, nutritional status, quality of life (QOL) and patient satisfaction. Data were analyzed and repeated measures analysis of variance was applied followed by Tukey-Kramer multiple for comparisons between treatments. All analyzes were performed using SAS software (release 9.1, 2003, SAS Institute Inc., Cary, USA) (p ? 0.05). MP greatly improved after IRPD and IFPD use with an increase of 85% and 87% respectively. Similar results were observed in respect to FCI and MBF with an increase (p ? 0.0001) of 91% and 62% in FCI and of 79% and 62% in MBF after the IRPD and IFPD use, respectively. Regardless the prosthesis type, the use of IRPD and IFPD increased the masseter thickness during maximum voluntary clenching (p ? 0.0001) and altered the chewing movements, reducing the total cycle time, as well as the duration of opening and closing phases (p ? 0.05). MA improved after IRPD and IFPD use, irrespectively of the food rated. ST was affected by prosthetic treatment, showing a reduction in the number of chewing cycles and in the size of the comminuted particle, with the lowest values observed after IFPD use. There was a raise in fiber (p = 0.007), calcium (p = 0.001) and iron (p = 0.02) intake after the IFPD use and a reduction in the intake of food with high cholesterol levels (p = 0.02). Patients satisfaction also increased (p ? 0.05) and the impact of oral health on QOL decreased in overall score (p = 0.04) and in the physical pain domain (p = 0.02) after the IFPD use. The rehabilitation of partially edentulous patients with IRPD and IFPD significantly improved masticatory function and the magnitude of the effect was related to the prosthesis type Advisors/Committee Members: UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DE CAMPINAS (CRUESP), Rodrigues-Garcia, Renata Cunha Matheus, 1964- (advisor), Universidade Estadual de Campinas. 3. Serra-Vicentin, Marcia Diaz. Avaliação fisiologica e morfologica do sistema mastigatorio em crianças: Physiologic and morphologic evaluation of the masticatory system in children.

Degree: 2009, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Abstract: Several are the factors that seem to intefeer on mastication: bite force (which might be related to the size of the muscles), components and quatity of saliva, occlusion caracteristics, among other. This thesis is composed by five chapters. Chapter 1 "The use of ultrasound in the investigation of the muscles of mastication" did a literature review about the use of ultrasonography on the investigation of the muscles of mastication and reinforced that US is a reliable method of great utility in the diagnostic field of alterations of the muscles of mastication and in the study of changes during growth and aging and that it remains as a promising technique for the study of the muscles of mastication. Chapter 2, "Correlation between muscle thickness and bite force in children before and after oral rehabilitation - a 2 year logitudinal study", evaluated the correlation between BF and muscle thickness before and after 6, 12, and 24 months of oral rehabilitation (TO, T6, T12, T24, respectively) in 19 6-9 years-old children with early loss of primary teeth. BF was determined with a flexible pressurized transducer. Masseter and temporal muscle thickness was measured during relaxation and maximal intercuspation by digital US with a high- resolution real-time 56mm/10-MHz linear-array transducer. There was a significant increase in BF and masseter thickness between TO and T12. There was a significant correlation between BF and relaxed and contracted temporal thickness at T6, and contracted temporal at T24. It was concluded that there was an increase in BF and masseter thickness after rehabilitation and there was also a relation between BF and temporal thickness, which suggests that the oral rehabilitation influences the morphological and functional aspects of the muscles of mastication. Chapters 3 "Bite force and salivary flow rate in schoolchildren", 4 "Bite force, texture perception and chewing parameters in schoolchildren" and 5 "Salivary flow rate, protein content, chewing parameters, and taste perception in schoolchildren" aimed to evaluate and correlate the salivary flow rate (SFR), BF, chewing parameters, perception of taste and texture of food, and the role of protein on mastication of children 7-10 years-old distributed according to occlusion and sex. BF was determined with a flexible pressurized transducer. Unstimulated (U) and stimulated (S) whole saliva were collected for 5 minutes in order to stablish the salivary flow rate (SFR), and the total protein was evaluated by method of Lowry et al. (1951). The following foods were tested: carrot, toast with and without margarine, banana, cheese, and chewing gum to determine the chewing parameters (chewing time, number of cycles and frequency), texture (using a visual analogue scale from 0 to 100 mm) and the taste (bitter, sour, sweet or salty). Boys presented SFR and BF (Chapter 3) significantly higher than girls. There was a significant correlation between SFR and BF for the group with normal occlusion. There was no significant difference in BF, texture or… Advisors/Committee Members: UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DE CAMPINAS (CRUESP), Gavião, Maria Beatriz Duarte, 1955- (advisor), Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
